Spitzer scrambles to get on the primary ballot Political return? Disgraced former governor is in a flurry of last-minute signature gathering. Since announcing his plan to run for city comptroller on Sunday, Eliot Spitzer has been scrambling to get enough signatures by Thursday’s deadline to make it onto the Democratic primary ballot. Spitzer is paying canvassers $800 per day — a rate that is typically unheard of in city petition drives, the New York Daily News reports. The former governor needs to collect 3,750 signatures from registered Democrats to qualify for the Sept. 10 primary. The signatures must come from voters who have not already signed for another

candidate. Spitzer gave himself only four days to pull off what other candidates take a month to do. Some political strategists are questioning whether he will make it onto the ballot, The New York Post reports. He didn’t even reach out to political consultants until the last minute, The Post said. While canvassers were out Wednesday morning, several women’s groups took to the steps of City Hall to decry Spitzer’s participation in the prostitution industry and to denounce his run.

Spitzer leads Stringer in poll for comptroller Disgraced ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer is leading an early poll in the race for city comptroller, beating his main competition by nine points. Among registered Democrats, Spitzer is ahead of Manhattan Borough President

A 26-year-old man has been arrested and charged with arson, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment after trying to burn an American flag outside a bar in Midtown Manhattan late at night after the Fourth of July, according to court documents. Court documents indicate that Jeffrey Schorfheide, 26, was caught

on a surveillance camera footage using a lighter to torch an American flag outside the Playwright Irish Pub around 4:35 a.m. on July 5. Schorfheide reportedly confessed in a written statement that after “a number of unsuccessful attempts,” the flag went up in flames and the awning outside the restaurant caught fire.

Playwright owner John Doherty said he was shocked that the alleged arsonist was an American. Doherty’s American citizenship was just approved July 1. “It was extra special for me, putting a flag up outside the bar,” he said. He said that repairing the damage has already cost him $4,000. Scott Stringer 42 to 33 percent, according to a Wall Street Journal-NBC 4 New York-Marist poll. Almost a quarter of voters polled were still undecided. The poll also showed 67 percent of Democrats believe Spitzer should be given a second chance five years after resigning amid a prostitution scandal. ANNA SANDERS

Firefighters Association endorses Bill Thompson Mayoral candidate Bill Thompson earned another key endorsement with the Uniformed Firefighters Association, announcing that its members will back him in this year’s race. “New Yorkers need a

leader that understands that public safety is the bedrock of a growing economy and vibrant, thriving city,” said Steve Cassidy, the union’s president. The endorsement is significant for Thompson, who has been trailing City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Anthony Weiner in recent polls. Bill Thompson / GETTY IMAGES

De Blasio arrested at hospital protest Election 2013. Mayoral candidate was arrested while fighting possible closure of LICH. In what his office hailed as an act of civil disobedience, Public Advocate and mayoral hopeful Bill de Blasio was arrested yesterday during a protest against the closure of Brooklyn’s Long Island College Hospital. “We are going to lose a vital community hospital in a matter of weeks unless something changes,” de Blasio said after being arrested for disorderly conduct. De Blasio and other politicians joined nurses and healthcare workers to rally outside SUNY’s Midtown offices, protesting SUNY Downstate Medical Center’s moves to close the Cobble Hill hospital. Two other mayoral candidates, Anthony Weiner and City Comptroller John Liu, were also at the protest but were not arrested. City Councilman Stephen Levin was also arrested, along with the president and executive director of the New York State Nurses Association. TACORI IS NOW AVAILABLE

Armed robbers tie up elderly woman The New York Police Department is searching for five armed suspects who tied up and robbed an 87-year-old woman in her Brooklyn home last month, police said. A female suspect rang the victim’s doorbell about 6:30 p.m. on June 15, police said. When the victim answered the door, four male suspects forced their way into her living room. Albany. Retired cops exempt from new gun control regulations Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an amendment to the SAFE Act, the strict gun-control legislation passed in January. The amendment exempts retired cops from “certain limitations” in the bill, specifically those prohibiting assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition. “Qualified” officers must have retired in good standing. The amendment was made effective immediately. Last week, a reporter asked the governor why the retired officers should receive an exemption, to which he replied: “Because they are retired law enforcement officers. That’s why. … They had different training, they have a different experience. I mean, they are different, right?” The legislation authorizes retired cops to possess large-capacity

NTSB. Much of the information released suggests pilot error as main focus of the investigation. The pilots aboard the Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 that crashed in San Francisco relied on automatic equipment — an auto-throttle system — to maintain airspeed and did not realize the plane was flying too slowly until it was just 200 feet above the ground, the head of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said on Tuesday. In her third detailed briefing on the July 6 crash, NTSB Chairwoman Deborah Hersman also said two flight attendants were ejected from the plane after its tail hit a seawall in front of the runway and was torn off.

Both were found injured but alive on the side of the runway. Hersman said many questions remained about the incident. The South Korean airline’s flight crew members were not tested for drugs or alcohol after the crash, a requirement for pilots of U.S.based carriers involved in accidents, she said. The accounts given to investigators by the pilots, as relayed by Hersman, confirmed information from the plane’s flight data recorder that showed the plane was traveling 25 percent below its target airspeed as it came in for landing. Judge. Apple Inc. conspired to raise prices on e-books In a sweeping rejection of Apple Inc.’s strategy for selling electronic books on the Internet, a federal judge ruled that the company conspired with five major publishers to raise e-book prices. competition and raise e-book prices. Wednesday’s decision could expose Apple to substantial damages. Apple was accused of pursuing the conspiracy to undercut online retailer Amazon.com Inc.’s e-book dominance, causing some e-book prices to rise to $12.99 or $14.99 from the $9.99 that Amazon charged. NOT YOU AGAIN? How is it possible that in our nation of 310 million people, the same ones surface over and over again, convinced that they are destined to lead us? I write this, of course, as Anthony Weiner, Sarah Palin, Rick Perry and Eliot Spitzer are once again swirling through the news. Each is in the process of or pondering a run for high office yet again, and I find this, in a word, astonishing. And in another word, irritating. I’m not trashing them for their past records or political peccadillos … or, in the case of Texan Perry, his armadillos. Each has proven at some juncture capable of winning the public’s trust and support, and heaven forbid I should impede their quest to, as Steely Dan once sang, “Do It Again.” I’ll even put aside the ready arsenal of hooker and Russiafrom-my-house jokes I have at my elbow. (Well,

Weiner / GETTY IMAGES

I suppose I can pass on just one punchline: “So the hot dog vendor says, ‘No, I’m pretty sure I did not get a tip.’”) I’m just saying it must take a mind-blowing sense of mission for anyone to emerge from a political defeat or scandal so ready to jump back into the fray. Perry and Palin? Sure, they’d fit the bill if you were looking for a great name

for a new steak sauce, but as presidential power players they were spectacular failures. Spitzer and Weiner? Both were chased from office like Edward Snowden at a CIA picnic. And yet, all four of them are back in the game, as if neither party could possibly find anyone else capable of carrying the political torch. I’m not sure what it says about us as voters, but this does not suggest a lot of imagination on the part of the two major parties. Because you can bet your ballot there are people in this vast country who would make great leaders if either side would just go find them, instead of spending all their time on recycling candidates like old cans.

2 CULTURE Q&A

Have you seen “Man of Steel?” No, I haven’t. I haven’t seen many movies, because I’ve been making one. The only two or three times I’ve gone to the movies in the last few years have been to movies that my daughters want to see. So I went to “Les Miserables” and I went to some animated movies — movies that I would not necessarily have gravitated towards. But that’s being a parent, taking your daughters to see the Justin Bieber concert movie.

FILMS

people.” Because the streets are vacated and everybody’s in a refuge, all they can destroy is buildings and vehicles when nobody’s there.

Guillermo del Toro is first and foremost a movie buff, which has been causing him a distinct amount of unhappiness. You see, del Toro has been so busy making movies — particularly his latest, the giant robots vs. giant monsters blockbuster “Pacific Rim” — that he hasn’t had any time to actually watch other people’s movies. Or at least that’s the excuse he gives for not having seen “Man of Steel” or the first installment of “The Hobbit,” which he was originally pegged to direct. There’s been a lot of criticism about the levels of carnage shown in “Man of Steel.” Your film also features a great deal of urban destruction. How do you keep that from crossing the line from fun into too realistic? Well, kaiju movies by definition bring a completely escapist fun in these type of fights. When you’re a kid and you’re watching Godzilla stomp a bunch of tanks or jets or cut through a city, the proportions of these things are so enormous that you cannot correlate them to anything real. What I do is I then bring in visually a very different sense of style from reality. I have these super-colored lights illuminating the rain, so it looks like a living comic book or a living anime. And the thing that I do very, very consciously is I vacated all the streets so they would be empty of people. So you’re never thinking, “Oh, the kaiju just crushed 600

12

Are you planning to do another non-English language film anytime soon, or do you live in Hollywood exclusively now? Yeah, I would love to. I produce a lot of movies in Latin America and Spain, and I’m producing a movie right now in Mexico. As a director, I would love to do it, but I need to find a story that suits me. It’s not like I have a drawer full of stories in Spanish and in English. [Laughs]

GUILLERMO DEL TORO The “Pacific Rim” director talks destroying cities in a civilized way.

THE MAN WHO WOULD PLAY WITH BATTLEBOTS

What determines if a story is better told in Spanish rather than English? You cannot aspire to do a movie that is as quirky as “Pan’s Labyrinth” in the Hollywood machinery. It would get tested and noted by executives to death. It would end up having a happy ending and all that bulls—. And at the same time you cannot end up with a movie that is as spectacular and huge and magnificent in showmanship as “Pacific Rim” if you do it in Mexico or Spain. So, depending on the scale of the story, depending on if you need to protect the production value and spectacle or if you need to protect the content and quirkiness of the story, you go from one [end of the] scale to another.

NED EHRBAR

ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

Best of the bots

Playing favorites “Pacific Rim” introduces audiences to numerous “kaiju” — giant, howling, belligerent monsters from another dimension — and “jaegers” — the giant, human-piloted robots mankind creates to fight them off and save the planet. It’s a movie clearly made at least in part with action figures in mind. So, naturally, director Guillermo del Toro has some favorite

creatures among the giant beasts and just-asenormous machines, right? “Yes,” he readily admits. “My favorite jaeger is Cherno Alpha, because I think he is adorable. It’s kind of this heavy, sort of clumsy, very old-fashioned, almost steampunk-y jaeger, and I like that. It looks like a giant iron boiler. And my favorite kaiju is Leatherback, the gorilla-esque one, because I fully identify with his beer belly.”

Rock ’em sock ’em robot nonsense Big monster movie. Guillermo del Toro’s latest is a brain-dead behemoth.

Review ‘PaciďŹ c Rim’ Director. Guillermo del Toro Stars. Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi

There are many jobs at which Guillermo del Toro would excel: As a creature designer, as a creator of sheer mood, as a star group writer — the guy who sits in the corner, throwing out crazy, brilliant ideas for others to pound into some kind of shape. He’s not really a leader, as a leader needs discipline and exactitude. Del Toro has neither. His films, even his best ones, are sloppy, with maddening bursts of unbridled creativity made with little organization. Even his serious films (“The Devil’s Backbone and “Pan’s Labyrinth) are weakly structured and short on ideas — but, like the “Hellboy films and “Blade II (his

Rating. PG-13

••••• masterpiece), have cool creatures and atypically gorgeous digital effects. This is to say that, in theory, the ideal movie for del Toro is one where giant robots battle giant aliens. This is “Pacific Rim,â€? a noisy monstrosity that embraces the notion that its director can’t tell a story and can’t see through intriguing ideas but has a knack for filmmaking that’s by turns (and sometimes simultaneously) visceral and elegant. The plot is (thankfully)

A big giant beast terrorizes humanity in the robots-vs.-monsters movie “PaciďŹ c Rim.â€? / WARNER BROS. PICTURES

simple: In the near future, monsters from another universe (called “kaiju) have risen from the sea. The world’s nations have met this threat by joining together and erecting towering rock ‘em sock ‘em robots. The humans are equal parts cliched and reliably stock: There’s a bland taciturn hero (Charlie Hunnam), a hot brainiac nursing vengeance

against the kaiju (Rinko Kikuchi), a St. Crispin’s Day-style speech-spouting leader amusingly named Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) and wacky scientists (Charlie Day and Burn Gorman), because nerds are fun. “To fight monsters we created monsters, goes one of the taglines. Don’t worry about the Frankensteinian implications.

This has no interest in addressing philosophical concerns, or thinking about much of anything. This has its drawbacks: An hour is wasted wondering who will pilot the big robots. When the battles belatedly come, they’re pummeling, if not always clear. Dinosaurlike behemoths of varying builds and features smash with clangy, rusty

mega-automaton, always at nighttime, sometimes in the rain. One tussle threatens to take place in daylight, but quickly heads to darker environs. (Don’t see this in post-converted 3-D, which renders everything murkier than it is already.) Might wins over sense, and the battles are fun. Del Toro is smart and calculating enough to slowly parcel out cool weaponry (a sword!). Once a bot uses a giant boat as a bat, one’s brain shuts down, and most is forgiven. It’s hard to love a movie that teases some intriguing nonsense about mind-melds, only to drop it once it becomes too complicated. Then again, it’s easy to (hesitantly) love a film so in awe of grease and gears and rust — where digital technology at one point fails, and analogue has to save the day. Swoon.

Interview. The good-guy actor talks about mussing his image with filmmaker Sebastian Silva for “Crystal Fairy.” Before discussing his new microbudget feature, “Crystal Fairy,” Michael Cera talks emphatically about the films of John Cassavetes. He cites “Opening Night,” starring Gena Rowlands as an unhinged stage actress, as his favorite. But he didn’t come around to “Husbands” — the filmmaker/actor’s seething look at three friends’ joint bender — right away. “The first time I watched it, I felt like I was watching an acting class — actors flexing their muscles. But now I really love it.” If Cera, now 25, wants to be taken more seriously as a thespian — or even shed his nice guy George Michael Bluth image — he’s not being open about it. When asked about hunting for edgier fare like “Crystal Fairy,” in which he’s an

sometimes feed his actors — also including Gaby Hoffmann as the titular hippie — before takes. Cera briefly played an abrasive cokehead version of himself in “This Is the End,” but “Crystal Fairy” is Cera as a jerk at feature-length. “He’s pretty self-serving,” he explains. “He’s incapable of putting himself in other people’s shoes. He’s so stuck in his head and his own agenda. In terms of playing him, though, it’s so much fun. You’ll pretend to be nice to someone when you’re just manipulating them, or just be outright rude to them.” That’s a different persona for him, and a different way of working. “We’d just run the camera and film the scene, so you could really immerse yourself in that feeling,”

Ugly American on a drug trip, his answer is quiet and modest. “I was just trying to find people to collaborate with who had similar sensibilities,” he says. “It’s one of the great things about being involved in this business, that you can meet people who are so talented, whose stuff you admire, who you can potentially work with.” After seeing “The Maid,” a hilariously neurotic Argentine dramedy about a grumpy housekeeper, he reached out to its director, Sebastian Silva. The two wound up collaborating on two movies. When the first, “Magic Magic,” about a woman’s (Juno Temple) descent into madness, ran into budget problems, they ran off to make the tiny “Crystal Fairy” in 12 days. There wasn’t a script, but there was a treatment. Everything was planned but the dialogue, which Silva would

His director

Sebastian Silva On Michael Cera: “I really like the way Michael looks. I’m really into how people look. His is such a versatile face. I feel it could be anything. I don’t think I could ever work with, like, Ryan Gosling. Not that I don’t like his acting, but I’m not intrigued by his looks. In ‘Harold and Maude,’ you’re never going to forget their faces. There’s something about features I think is really important. Gaby has a very specific face. Natalie Portman looks

like — what does she look like? Like nothing. I mean, imagine Michael at 45. It’s so amazing. What is he going to look like?” On not making a drug movie: “What is a drug movie? I hate when I say ‘Americans’ because it seems so patronizing and annoying, but let me say it: Americans have a tendency to classify things. Suchand-such is a drug movie, a thriller, a sex movie. But this is not a drug movie. For me it’s more of a movie

about friendship. The drug is a MacGuffin for everybody else. You never get to experience a subjective experience of the drug as you do in “Easy Rider” or “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” It’s not “Enter the Void.” You have this super low-key movie about a bunch of kids who take a drug, but observe pelicans and rub each other in the sand. They never talk about how f—ed up they are. The only reference is when Michael has his panic attack, and then they say we’re landing, and that’s it.”

George Michael Bluth drops mescaline Drug saga. “Crystal Fairy turns Michael Cera into a druggie Ugly American.

Review ‘Crystal Fairy’ Director. Sebastian Silva Stars. Michael Cera, Gaby Homann

“Crystal Fairy is first and foremost the latest attempt by Michael Cera to shed his bland, buttonhis-shirt-to-the-top nice guy image. “This Is the End all too briefly presented him as a groping cokehead. “Fairy settles for him being a brusque, self-involved Ugly American. The first of two tiny road trip films he made in Chile with “The Maid filmmaker Sebastian Silva (the other, “Magic Magic, is still looking for a distributor,) it casts him as Jamie, an expat of apparent bottomless wealth in Santiago, who of course hasn’t bothered to learn the language. At a party he’s so happy to meet another American — and so high — that he doesn’t imme-

Their hoped-for good times are thus plagued by her micromanaging their hangouts, talking about 2012 doomsday (this is a slight period piece) and dropping “magicâ€? rocks in their beer. Jamie’s entitled stranger in a strange land routine, comically abrasive though it is, is

quickly overshadowed by his irritation with someone who’s even more of an outsider than him. Likewise, Cera’s imageshedding is eclipsed by Hoffmann’s hugely dedicated and often surprising performance. Cera was an adolescent star, but Hoff-

mann was a child actor who appeared in the likes of “Field of Dreams and “Sleepless in Seattle. This is the meatiest, closestto-high profile role she’s ever had, and she digs right in. Crystal Fairy has her share of hippie cliches

(including casual nudism that unnerves, not delights, her male comrades, whom she condescendingly calls “my boys). But Hoffmann gives her other shades. She can be genuinely warm. And she can be profoundly

passive-aggressive, if not aggressive-aggressive. She might seem like a space cadet, but Hoffmann slips in notes of bitter self-awareness. After Jamie, having long tried to (barely) conceal his contempt, finally explodes on her, she quietly departs from the group. It’s suggested she’s getting old enough that she’s finally starting to sense how her flower child behavior alienates her from others. One never knows which side she’s going to show, or how deeply she’ll dig into whichever conflicting side of her persona. And she gives this shambling, loose drug trip film — ably handled by Silva, whose tactile, handheld filmmaking never devolves into a silly tripping style — a neurotic, characterdriven shot in the arm.

Don’t make me a target Danish drama. Mads Mikkelsen plays a man falsely accused of child abuse in “The Hunt.” There’s never a doubt that Lucas (Mads Mikkelsen) is innocent. A kindergarten teacher in a small Danish town, he’s accused of exposing his genitals to the young daughter of his best friend, Theo (Thomas Bo Larsen). By establishing that he’s been falsely accused, it frees us to watch as a clearly baseless accusation, understandably mishandled by nice people, snowballs into a hopeless quagmire. Even after his accuser Klara (Annika Wenderkopp) recants her testimony, everyone’s too hopped up for there to be a clean resolution. If the truth about Lucas is always clear, what’s not

is whether it can maintain its intelligence. Many an astute drama has gone off the rails in the final stretch. “Lakeview Terrace,” a surprisingly trenchant examination of modern race relations among the upper middle class, turned in its third act to exactly the braindrained exploitation picture its trailers promised. film’s initial scenes all but beg for gruesome, silly payoffs that will shred what credibility the film’s built up. That “The Hunt” miraculously manages to use these two elements and still remain sober to the end is worth a commendation. It could stand to be tighter: Too many minor characters, including a surly supermarket staff, might as well twirl mustaches, and the way the town quickly turns on Lucas can make the film more like a reductive problem picture. But the film — and Mikkelsen, who just revived Hannibal Lecter on TV — stops short of making Lucas a martyr. He has character flaws: When questioned, he gets indignant, even violent. And he disappears for stretches, during which the film shifts to Theo as he broods over joining the angry mob. There’s an even smarter, more exacting film to be made from this material. But this will do.

Host your own clambake Seafood. You don’t have to be on the beach to enjoy this New England tradition.

Clambakes are as beloved in New England as summer. But you don’t have to have a beach (although that helps) to host your own at home. Executive Chef Karsten Hart, of The Castle Hill Inn in Newport, R.I., has been the master and commander of around 30 clambakes over the past two years for guests (his seafood-y to-do was voted Rhode Island’s Best Clambake by Rhode Island Monthly). Here, he breaks down how to love the bivalves. What are the steps to take to host a clambake if you’re on the beach? Before building your clambake pit, one needs a proper wire basket to place the food in, burlap,

a few sailing tarps and lots of wood. The baskets can be custom-made and purchased from [www. anysizebasket.com]. I suggest purchasing at least two. The rest of the equipment can be found at a local hardware store. Once you have purchased all your equipment, you simply need to dig a hole (around 5 feet across and 3 feet deep). Once you have dug the hole, place

enough wood to fill, and light using newspaper and a match. What are the steps to take if you don’t have sand? Can you still have a clambake? At Castle Hill Inn, our clambake is perched well above Grace Kelly Beach, where we have no sand, only dirt and rocks. The advantage of building a pit in the earth rather than

It’s not just clams in your clambake. What else do you add? We add homemade chorizo, potatoes, corn and lobsters, but you could add just about anything. This past year, we buried a whole pig in the clambake pit and smoked it for four hours before unveiling. It was delicious. Is the clambake a Rhode Island tradition? Clambakes are traditional to New England. There are two native Rhode Island tribes — the Narragansett and Wampanoag — who were known for their clambake celebrations. Some historians even state that the clambake may have been one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations.

Lamar Odom cheated on Khloe Kardashian with a stripper Khloe Kardashian has kicked husband Lamar Odom out of their home for cheating. But it gets worse. He cheated with a stripper. For more than a year. And he paid her. According the bombshell report from Star magazine, the woman in question is 29-yearold stripper Jennifer Richardson, whom he met at the Stadium Club strip club in Washington, D.C., after a Clippers game last year. The first night they hooked up, Odom took care to take “her phone apart and put the pieces in different spots all around the room” so she couldn’t record their tryst. But that doesn’t keep a resourceful stripper from becoming a “source” to Star magazine for money! The “affair” (which honestly just sounds like a bunch of sexual encounters after games in various hotel rooms around the coun-

try) lasted for months, with Odom at one point “gifting” her $3,000. Oh, and they had a threesome. (I don’t know how that falls into the blame game. Does that mean he cheated with several women, or with just one woman but very spectacularly?) Star reports that Khloe found out about the affair and kicked him out — but they would continue to get back together. But now it looks like they are headed for a divorce — sources tell Star that Odom moved out for good on June 3. Friends, you know it’s bad when Scott Disick seems like the good Kardashian significant other.

‘The Canyons’ director defends Lindsay Lohan

He can’t shoot around lack of charisma. I just wish it was easier for Lindsay.”

According to “The Canyons” director Paul Schrader, working with Lindsay Lohan is worth all the headaches. “Tardiness, unpredictability, tantrums, absences, neediness, psychodrama — yes, all that, but something more, that thing that keeps you watching someone on screen, that thing you can’t take your eyes off of, that magic, that mystery,” Schrader writes in Film Comment. “All the drama, the mishegas, all the stress — that means little. A director can shoot around misbehavior.

Lopez on that famous Versace dress The revealing green Versace dress Jennifer Lopez wore at the 2000 Grammys has become the stuff of legend, but Lopez herself remembers not getting what all the fuss was about. “When I came onstage with David Duchovny, who was the biggest star in the world, he said to the audience, ‘Nobody is looking at me,’” Lopez recalls to W magazine. “This loud sound started from the back of the room — it was kind of like a roar, over me in the dress. When I went to my seat, I said, ‘What’s the big deal?!’ Puffy and Benny were waiting, and they said, ‘You have to take pictures in that dress.’”

More on Clooney and Keibler split

While news of George Clooney and Stacy Keibler’s split may have come as a surprise to some, the writing had apparently been on the wall for quite some time for their doomed relationship, according to Us Weekly. “They hadn’t had sex in months,” a source says. “He’s been in Europe, and she’s in L.A., and they haven’t seen each other in a long time. Some girls would be OK with that and just be happy dating George, but not her.” According to TMZ.com, the two ended their contract, erm, relationship, over the phone.

You know, being George Clooney’s arm candy really does wonders for your status in life. Back in 2002, Keibler was just a WWE wrestler who listed “table dances” as some of her onstage moves. And now she’s been on the red carpet of the Oscars twice and will host her own television show, “Supermarket Superstars,” on Lifetime (it premieres on July 22; what a coincidence!). I will hand it to Keibler — she’s been able to parlay being George Clooney’s plusone into a celebrity career of her own better than most.

design. She’ll lock up your bags so your hands are free to participate. Five times a day, six performers guide audiences of 12 through the cottage to partner with dancers, sit for interviews with a mysterious fellow on video, hear commentary on the relation of the brain to the heart, listen to the tale of a dancer who survived his own coronary interruption and monitor heart rates — their own and those of the busy dancers. It’s a program suitable for viewers 8 and older who can climb stairs and are game to engage, physically, with the performers. “The heart wants what it wants,” Woody Allen famously said. Yo La Tengo have no plans to ‘Fade’ away Interview. Ira Kaplan talks about doing whatever he wants. There are people who credit Yo La Tengo with defining indie rock. And, if it’s true, it’s a pretty epic legacy. If you ask front man and cofounder Ira Kaplan, however, he’s reluctant to even entertain the idea. “That’s something that really does not enter into our life much,” he explains. “Even the notion of indie rock is nothing I’m particularly fond of. I don’t really know what it is. On a personal level, when a band says that to me, it is meaningful. ... But I think about it as little as possible.” It’s that lack of pre-

tension that has largely contributed to the Jersey band’s staying power. Fronted by Ira and his wife, Georgia, Yo La Tengo has been making music for just about three decades. And they’re not slowing down. One wonders if they ever hit a creative wall. “It doesn’t seem that way. Maybe our standards are too low,” laughs Kaplan. “I would say that every time we finish making a record, that’s the only time I think about that. You always figure, ‘Well, it’s got to run out some time’ … but … it seems that at a certain point, we all ... know we’re ready and get to work.” “Fade” is the most recent product of that work, and it’s the trio’s tightest album in more than a decade. dwindling attention spans. “We did consciously make this new record a shorter record. We wanted to challenge ourselves to do something more succinct,” Kaplan says. Still, he continues, “I grew up when making a double album was something a band did. That was a statement. ... I think that, with the realization that we had made ... like six double albums in a row, I wanted to know for myself that we could do something shorter. Certainly, nobody was demanding it but us.” That notion of rising only to their own challenges seems like the credo for the band that just may have created indie rock.

The Front Bottoms were founded by Jersey boys Sella and drummer Mathew Uychich, high school friends who teamed up in 2006. Despite being from Bergen County, next door to New York City, the duo would drive down to Philly to play the basements of Drexel University and the living rooms of Penn students early in their career. “Manhattan is a rough place for a two-piece poppunk band, so Philly became a regular spot that we would go and play, Sella says. Sella and Uychich have recently added a bassist and guitarist for the live show. “I think people like that: Me and Matt started the band, and we went on tour and we’re, like, living the dream, and we never gave up on it, Sella says. “In the end, we’re playing the songs we wrote and people are singing along. 1. Try When you’re in a longterm relationship, you can get lazy, stop trying to impress your partner and stop making good sex a priority (as long as

you throw it in before bed a few nights a week it’s all good, right?) It’s not that you’re a bad lay, it’s that you’ve stopped trying to be good. If you had a one-night stand with someone from your office, you’d be a rock star simply because you’d care to impress them (it could be the first and last chance you’ll ever get to show them what you’re made of). So go home tonight and take the initiative to do your old ball-and-chain like it’s

the last time you’ll get to sleep with them.

2. Mix it up Sex gets boring when it’s set up the same way every time. This applies to positions, of course, but also to timing. Is the only time you’re having sex right before going to sleep? Why wait till you’re tired and sex feels predictable? Rip your lover’s clothes off the second you walk in the

We all scream for gelato! going out guide

Welcome to your weekend! Fourth of July may have come and gone, but the party hasn’t stopped here at Metro. On tap: lots of gelato, happenings in AC and a pie-eating party (yup). Happy weekend!

www.metro.us/ events/ NewYork

Lets start with the basics: Ice cream is American. Gelato, however, is a sweet gift from the Italians, ranking right up there with pizza and pasta. (Also, gelato typically contains little or no eggs, more milk, less cream and is churned more slowly than ice cream. In sum, it has less fat, less air and is served at a slightly warmer temperature.) And while most of us have sampled everything from vanilla bean to mint chip, the latest offerings from local pastry chefs and gelato makers are far from typical. From Bananimal to Zabaglione, we sampled some of the finest sweet treats this side of the Atlantic. And while it’s

flavor combination in an ice cream. One day, I had leftover carrot cake made with walnuts and coconut as well as some buttermilk in the refrigerator … and the rest is history! I think the sourness of the buttermilk goes nicely with the sweetness of the carrot cake.”

not a trip to Firenze, you may feel transported to somewhere special with a taste of these frozen creations. Here’s the scoop on a dozen must-try’s:

Mo Gelato 178 Mulberry St., 212-226-6758 With flavors crafted by Italian gelataios at this Little Italy storefront, we’re partial to the classic zabaglione flavor (start-

ing at $3.50), a gelato made with sweet marsala, a Sicilian fortified wine.

The Harrison

355 Greenwich St., 212-274-9310 Buttermilk gelato with carrot cake chunks and brown sugar balsamic (three scoops/$8) is our go-to. Says pastry chef Colleen Grapes: “Traditional carrot cake has cream cheese frosting, and I wanted to capture that

54 Carmine St., 212-255-2100 At this West Village neighborhood gem, chef David Standridge and his team offer their take on classic flavors (think vanilla rum, dark chocolate and rhubarb), but our fave is the sour cream gelato ($6).

Grand Central Oyster Bar 89 E. 42nd St., 212-490-6650 Pastry Chef Januz Noka is churning out his take on traditional flavors like Key lime gelato with graham crackers (starting at $6.50), but adds that the most unusual flavor he’s originated

at the Oyster Bar is sea urchin ice cream. “It’s a big hit all the time,” he says, adding that mango black pepper sorbet is also a hot summertime flavor.

Krescendo 364 Atlantic Ave., 718-330-0888 Newly appointed chef Robert Noorman cools off diners with his rotating menu of inventive flavors, but the most refreshing is the pepper mint gelato (three scoops/$8), made with fresh-cracked black pepper and fresh mint.

Vivoli Il Gelato Macy’s Herald Square, 151 W. 34th St., sixth floor. Imagine rice pudding spun into gelato and voila! Vivoli’s riso gelato, made with Arborio rice (starting at $4.75), is served at its first location outside of Florence.

218 Lafayette St., 212-965-8777 From pastry chef Brian Sullivan comes a roster of seasonal flavors of sorbet and gelato, including rosemaryviolet, also known as the “blue moon,” a Wisconsin specialty invention (one scoop/$3, three scoops/$8).

Sorella & Stellina 95 Allen St., 212-274-9555 Revert back to the joys of childhood with pastry chef Michelle Catarata’s playful flavor, Bananimal: banana gelato, animal crackers and caramel swirl (one scoop/$3, two scoops/$5), served at both Stellina and its sister gelato shop next door, Sorella.

Corvo Bianco 446 Columbus Ave., 212-5952624 At her brand-new Upper West Side coastal Italian spot, chef Elizabeth Falkner has a menu that includes fennel gelato (served with Italian cookies, $10).

The Harrison had the best idea for leftover carrot cake, ever. / PROVIDED

Manon 407 W. 14th St., 212-596-7255 Executive pastry chef Beth Bosmeny, formerly of Eleven Madison Park, makes Manon’s gelato daily, including the chocolate Earl Grey (three scoops/$9). “This is made with 70 percent Valhrona chocolate and the Earl Grey tea is from the company that we use for tea for the restaurant, Serendipitea. We infuse the tea in the milk for 15 minutes prior to making the custard base. We use more milk than cream in the base to make it creamier, and the chocolate is very dark and rich, which helps balance out the strong flavor of the tea,” Bosmeny says.

Vesta 21-02 30th Ave., Astoria, 718-545-5550 Blasphemy be damned! Astoria’s Vesta has a Baby Jesus cake gelato — a spin on their notable Baby Jesus date cake — both made with sticky toffee, dates and cream.

Games and glamour in Atlantic City Getaways. AC has rebounded from the storm and is ready for summer. In its 10th year, the Borgata ups the ante with entertainment that goes beyond slots.

The Borgata is one of Atlantic City’s new classics. The hotel and casino brands itself as “The Show that Never Ends,” a

nod to the 24-hour nature of casino life. But it could also describe Atlantic City’s cultural resilience. Like its recently stormbattered coastline, AC is adapting quickly. While it continues to keep oldguard gamblers happy, it now welcomes a hipper crowd seeking sophisticated cuisine and edgy entertainment. The Borgata celebrated its 10th anniversary last week with a concert headlined by The Roots. Backstage, Chrissy Teigen, multitalented model and fiancee of John Legend, mused on why she enjoys

spending time in casinos. “I love the fact that everyone is in one spot,” she told us. “It’s almost like all the people that you see at the airport, from all different walks of life, but actually in a communal place to have a great time.” That diversity was reflected in the show’s lineup, kicking off with a set from comedian Aziz Ansari, followed by Slash fronting The Roots for a jazzed-up “Sweet Child of Mine.” Later, a joyous Jill Scott had the usually sedate crowd on their feet. During the show, in a

scene right out of “Boardwalk Empire,” thieves pulled off a $200,000 heist in the casino’s jewelry store. In the new Atlantic City, gambling, although the main source of revenue, is just one option among many. Celebrity chefs such as Wolfgang Puck and Philadelphia

rising star Jose Garces have all set up shop down the shore. The Water Club, the boutique hotel adjoining the Borgata, has a twostory ocean-view spa that offers ayurvedic treatments. But for those dreaming of hitting it big, there will always be the games.

“I still have chips from every casino I’ve ever been to,” Tiegen confessed. “I don’t even cash them in. If John ever kicks me to the curb, I’m just going to turn in all my chips.”

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

Give up Smokers your seats, have no kids pity I am tired, physically and emotionally, of standing on a packed subway gazing down at the 20-somethings (or younger) occupying all the seats. I’m not superannuated, but I am nearly 60, and haven’t passed for 20 in a long time. Well, I was raised differently. I always offer an older person or pregnant woman — or anyone who looks like they need it — my seat, because it’s the right thing to do. I’m not patting myself on the back here, because everyone used to do this! Sadly, it seems that a once common courtesy is quickly dying out.

Re: ‘Smokers the butt of unfair prejudice’ (Metro, July 9) I’m very allergic to cigarette smoke. Smokers keep lighting up at the bus stop, often not leaving me enough time to run to another stop. If I say anything, through the washcloth I’m holding over my mouth and nose, they say some lame garbage about how cars are worse for me. I’m trying to catch a bus to work, not jump in front of cars! Rangers sign Moore for return to hockey NHL. The veteran took a year off to care for his wife, who has since died of liver cancer. For Dominic Moore, the decision was simple — come back to the place where his NHL career

began. “I think there’s no doubt coming back to New York was my first choice,” Moore said in a conference call with reporters Wednesday, July 10. “For a variety of reasons I’ve been drawn back here [and I’m glad it] came to fruition. “[The Rangers] have the making for a great team,” Moore said.

“[Head coach Alain Vigneault’s style of hockey fits] really well with the kind of team we have. [There are a] lot of things to look forward to.” Moore signed a oneyear, $1 million deal on the first day of free agency. This will be his second stint with the Rangers as he was on the 2005-06 team that included a rookie

by the name of Henrik Lundqvist. He has 67 goals and 185 points in a career that has seen him also play for the Penguins, Wild, Maple Leafs, Sabres, Panthers, Canadiens, Lightning and Sharks. Moore sat out the lockout-shortened 2013 season to take care of his wife, Katie, who had been diagnosed with

liver cancer. She died in January at the age of 32. “It’s a battle the whole family is in,” Moore said, adding he learned “not to get ahead of myself” while caring for his wife. “Living one day at a time and not worrying [what could happen] down the road.”

Suspension looms

A-Rod to meet with MLB

Not-so-welcome returns: Zack Wheeler dominates former team Young Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler never got a chance to pitch for the Giants, the team which drafted him No. 6 overall in 2009, but he took the mound in San Francisco for the Mets Wednesday, July 10. He pitched his best career game, going seven innings and allowing just three hits and one run in a 7-2 Mets victory. / GETTY IMAGES

MLB. Yanks shopping Hughes, Chamberlain for offense: Reports The Yankees need an upgrade on offense, and they are reportedly looking to unload one or both of their former top pitching prospects. Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain, who are both free agents at the end of the season and unlikely to be back in

the Bronx, are likely the team’s top trade chips. Hughes might be most interesting to a team looking for a rental since it is believed he is headed for a West Coast team next year. The belief is Hughes would thrive in a pitcher’s park. METRO

Hagelin back

Rangers bring back Hagelin The Rangers came to an agreement to re-sign forward Carl Hagelin on the first day of free agency. It is reportedly a two-year, $4.5 million deal. The 24-year-old had 10 goals and 24 points in 48 games for the Rangers last season. METRO

NHL. Islanders, Nets pair up for business ahead of team’s move Let’s just say the Islanders, Brooklyn Nets and Barclays Center are one big, happy corporate family. Barclays Center and Nets CEO Brett Yormark will oversee the Islanders’ business operations, it was announced Wednesday, July 10. The two entities had been working

together for months on business strategies. Yormark’s team will be responsible for sales, including tickets, luxury boxes and sponsorships, along with marketing business communications. Hockey operations will still be run by general manager Garth Snow. DENIS GORMAN

Even as he continues his rehab in Tampa, Alex Rodriguez was to meet with MLB on July 12 in order to discuss his involvement with the Biogenesis scandal, according to ESPN. Rodriguez will speak to representatives from MLB with the threat of a suspension looming over his head. Multiple reports indicate a suspension could come as soon as the week after the All-Star Game.

Bogdanovic will not join Nets in 2013 NBA. Brooklyn had hoped to come to an agreement on a buyout for the European forward. First Kyle Korver turned down the Nets to sign with Atlanta and now the team’s other move for a wing shooter has also fallen apart. Brooklyn had come to an agreement on a threeyear deal with Croatian forward Bojan Bogdanovic contingent on agreeing to a buyout with his European club, Fenerbahce. But Nets general manager Billy King said Wednesday, July 10, that talks had fallen through and Bogdanovic would stay in Europe. “Billy and the guys in management will figure out the plan and which direction we go now,” head coach Jason Kidd said. The team, which drafted the 24-year-old in 2011, retains his rights.

Nets nearing Garnett, Pierce deal The remaking of the Nets could be finished by July 12. Nets GM Billy King confirmed Wednesday with NBA TV that the reported deal between Brooklyn and Boston for Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce was nearing a conclusion. “We did talk to Boston and we were going after Paul, and then it was like, ‘Let’s see if we could get KG,’” King told the station. “Hopefully we can get the deal done by [July 12].” METRO

NBA. Knicks finalize trade for Bargnani, bring back Prigioni The Knicks finalized last week’s trade for Raptors forward Andrea Bargnani on Wednesday, July 10, as the free-agent signing period officially opened. The team had to wait to sign and trade Quentin Richardson, who was sent to Toronto along with Marcus Camby, Steve Novak and a 2016 first-round pick. “Seven-foot versatile players with a good midrange offensive game and an ability to stretch the other team’s defense are hard to come by in this league,” GM Glen Grun-

wald said in a statement. The team also came to an agreement with Pablo Prigioni. Prigioni had considered going back to Europe, but instead signed a three-year deal worth about $5 million. METRO
