Fashion plate. A new book of drawings examines the clothing style of Hasidic culture. Many New Yorkers have walked through Williamsburg and wondered what dictates the distinctive dress of the Hasidic Jewish community there. Williamsburg-based artist Michael Levin is one of those New Yorkers. He first moved to Williamsburg in 2007, and his fascination with the Hasidim there soon prompted him to move deeper into the area populated predominantly by Hasidim. “I kind of sought this neighborhood out after a while,” Levin explained. But he said finding information about their dress and customs was
like gathering tiny puzzle pieces. “You can’t really go to a book, at least not one in English, that will cover everything,” he said. That is no longer the case: Levin’s book, a primer on Hasidic dress, is the culmination of all of that research, including information gleaned from “a decent number of Hasidic Jews and ex-Hasidic Jews.” He said the unity he saw in Hasidim was a big part of what drew him. “I think I was a little bit jealous and a little bit kind of awestruck,” he said. “Jews of Today” is Levin’s first book. A reception will be held at 7 Dunham in Williamsburg on Saturday, June 20. It is also the opening night of a 10day gallery show featuring drawings from this series.

Formerly disgraced politicians Anthony Weiner and ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer are now leading their races, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Monday. Spitzer, who resigned after being connected with a prostitution ring in 2008, is 15 points ahead of his main opponent, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. The poll revealed both
candidates have strong support among black voters, which may have contributed to the bump in numbers. Nearly a third of black voters went for Weiner and nearly twothirds for Spitzer. Notably, almost 70 percent of city Democrats also said financial impropriety was a worse offense for politicians than sexual misconduct. ANNA SANDERS

A week after Eliot Spitzer announced his 11th-hour bid for city comptroller, the former governor’s e-book, “Protecting Capitalism Case by Case” was released Monday. The book is a firsthand account of the high-profile cases Spitzer prosecuted as an as-

Spitzer weighs “the tension between capitalism and the need for vigilant oversight of excesses, to protect those who cannot protect themselves,” according to a press release. ANNA SANDERS

City’s longest mural painted in Rockaways Artistic statement. The mural will stretch along a mile-long section of the Rockaways. One hundred artists and volunteers began painting the city’s longest mural at Rockaway Beach in Queens over the weekend. Three designs inspired by the Rockaways were painted on barriers installed to protect pedestrians and bicyclists along the Shore Front Parkway. Of more than 50 submissions, designs by Jade Chan, John Garcia and Patty Harris were chosen after community members voted on 10 finalists. Chan’s “In Flight” features white seabirds silhouetted against blue waves. After visiting Rockaway

Beach, Chan said the image of birds flying was liberating. Her design represents the “freedom and strength of the human spirit.” Garcia’s untitled design pays tribute to Rockaway Beach’s surf culture, with images of surfers riding waves alongside seagulls and other birds that keep them company. The mural also welcomes visitors to the Rockaways.
Harris’ more abstract design features simple shapes suggesting wave movements. Like water in real life, Harris uses a range of hues to mimic waves. Silhouetted surfers are incorporated into the design. Benjamin Moore donated 420 gallons of paint for the mural. Mural painting will continue Wednesday, the Parks Department said.

Health. Obamacare will have little effect on NYC employers Most employers in New York state made no changes to their level of workers in response to the federal Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, a regional Federal Reserve report released on Monday showed. Three in four employers surveyed by the New York Federal Reserve indicated that they had made minimal or no changes in the workforce in anticipation of healthcare reform. There have been concerns the costs to provide healthcare insurance for more Americans would cause employers to cut their workforce, or reduce healthcare benefits. A similar proportion of companies said they made no changes to their healthcare plans, although 11 percent said they were or would be scaling back or drop-

ping health insurance while the same percentage of companies said they would make health insurance more comprehensive. New York Fed posed these questions on healthcare reform as a part of a July survey. The report showed improvement in labor conditions. When asked what they would do next when certain provisions of Obamacare take effect in 2014, more than 80 percent of New York manufacturers said they would leave wage and salaries alone. But 30 percent said they would likely reduce other employee benefits. Separately, about 39 percent of the New York firms said they would likely raise prices they charged their customers to help pay for costs of healthcare reform.

Beleaguered train. A new review from the MTA outlines ways to improve the line. After a service review of the G train came out recently, the MTA is hoping to enhance the line’s efficiency for straphangers. The MTA’s review of the G train line found that including extra trains during times of increased ridership would require $700,000 in additional funding. As part of the report, the MTA vowed on Twitter to add more G trains during peak periods. The review also found adjusting service times and changing stop locations would make commuting easier for Brooklyn and Queens residents.
“The G line is a vital connection for customers in fast-growing parts of our service area, and this review will be an important tool for making both shortterm improvements and long-term additions to our service, MTA Chairman Thomas Prendergast said. The review was requested by New York state Senators Daniel Squadron and Martin Malave Dilan.

Heat wave. Cooling centers open in NYC as temperatures rise As New Yorkers brace for a week filled with heat and humidity, the city is opening up cooling centers in all five boroughs. The city opens its cooling centers during heat emergencies when dangerously hot weather strikes the region. The centers serve as a way for citizens to escape heat waves. “It’s going to be very hot and humid this week,” Mayor Bloomberg said. “The weather can be dangerous, especially for those without air conditioning, the elderly and those with chronic health conditions.” The city has about 425 cooling centers around the city, which will remain open this week. A listing of cooling centers in each borough, as well as their hours of operation, can be found on www.nyc.gov/oem or by calling 311.

An 84-year-old patient at Coney Island Hospital died after she was given a transfusion of the wrong blood type, officials said. The woman died June 9 because the hospital’s blood lab incorrectly identified her blood type, according to the city’s Health and Hospitals Corporation. Experts say these kinds of mistakes occur in about one in every 14,000 transfusions and can have fatal complications, The Daily News reports. The state Health Department has ordered the hospital to send blood to another lab for testing. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family,” the HHC said in said in a statement. LAURA SHIN

Attorney general: Trayvon Martin death unnecessary Shooting case. Holder said federal prosecutors were continuing to investigate. The shooting death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin was tragic and unnecessary, and it ought to spark public debate about how to prevent similar incidents, Attorney General Eric Holder said yesterday. “Independent of the legal determination that will be made, I believe that this tragedy provides yet another opportunity for our nation to speak honestly about the complicated and emotionally charged issues that this case has raised,” Holder told a convention of Delta Sigma Theta, a black
sorority, in Washington, D.C. Although Zimmerman was cleared of murder charges under Florida law, U.S. prosecutors could decide to bring criminal charges under a federal hate-crimes law, and some civil rights advocates are lobbying prosecutors to do so. The hate-crimes law would require the government to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Zimmerman, who is white and Hispanic, shot Martin, who was black, because of race. Prosecutors would decide what to do based on the facts of the case and the law, Holder said. The chief U.S. prosecutor and an appointee of President Barack Obama, Holder received a warm welcome from the more than 14,000 sorority members in the audience

Putin: Snowden shifting on US The case. Russia is put in increasingly awkward position as Moscow and Washington try to improve relations. President Vladimir Putin said on yesterday he wanted Edward Snowden to leave after three weeks holed up at a Moscow airport, but also signaled that the former U.S. spy agency contractor was moving toward meeting Russia’s asylum conditions. Snowden flew to Moscow’s Sheremetyevo air-
port from Hong Kong on June 23 in the hope of traveling on to a country that would offer him protection from the United States. Putin said Washington had trapped Snowden by preventing him from reaching other countries that might shelter him, but, wary of upsetting Moscow’s former Cold War enemy, has said Russia will grant him political asylum only if he stops actions that could be harmful to the United States. “The conditions for [Russia] granting him political asylum are known to him,” Putin said. “And judging by his latest ac-

Known anti-vac crusader Jenny McCarthy to share her ‘View’
I’ve written this column for a long time, covering celebrities who do stupid and irresponsible things. But there is no one more stupid and more irresponsible than Jenny McCarthy, who was just named the new cohost of “The View” on Monday morning. “We are delighted that Jenny will be joining us as a permanent cohost on ‘The View’ starting in September,” Barbara Walters said in a statement. For her part, McCarthy said,

And apparently Lindsay’s mom, Dina Lohan, thinks the deal comes with some hands-on care from Winfrey herself. “It’s fantastic,” Dina tells E! THE WORD Timberlake on ‘Take Back the Night’ Justin Timberlake insists he had no idea the name of his new single, “Take Back the Night,” was also the name of a sexual assault awareness group. The group, the Take Back the Night Foundation, took issue with Timberlake appropriating their name for a steamy R&B track.
“Upon the release of my new single, I was made aware of an organization of the same name,” Timberlake says in a statement. “Neither my song nor its lyrics have any association with this organization. I’m moved by its efforts to stop violence against women, create safe communities and encourage respectful relationships for women — something we all should rally around.”

RYAN COOGLER A true story of a young father in Oakland arrives on screen.
TRACING EVENTS CAUGHT ON CAMERA For his debut feature film, writer-director Ryan Coogler chose the true story of Oscar Grant (played by Michael B. Jordan), a young father in Oakland, Calif., who was shot and killed by transit police just minutes into New Year’s Day 1999. The shooting — seen in cell phone-captured footage — sparked riots and protests. Coogler now shares Grant’s story in “Fruitvale Station.” How did you go about approaching this story? I had access to the public record documents from the trial, and that was what I based my first draft off of. The next thing I had access to was the family. What I really wanted to do was to tell the story through the scope of the people that knew him the best. On that day, there was a lot of time spent with his girl, his daughter and his mom. I wanted to get to his character really through those relationships.
Travel via cinema
Making connections With “Fruitvale Station” on the festival circuit, writer-director Coogler is seeing the world thanks to his film, but it used to be thanks to the films of others. “I would use film as a way to travel,” says Coogler. “I found out that I had a lot in common with people that came up in Romania or in France. I think the storytelling in films has that incredible power.” How about the decision to open the film with the actual cell phone footage from the incident? My intention was to not show the footage, but it had come up with my editors. I’m from the Bay Area. I’d seen the footage so much, I didn’t need it. But they were saying how
they didn’t know about this until they started to work on this project, and they thought it was important to let the audience see what happened to him. And once we did it, I realized that it played into a lot of the themes that went into making the film. It’s interesting how all the decisions that put Oscar on that train were made by other people. It was something that came up in research, in talking to his family, because each one of them blamed themselves for Oscar winding up in that situation. [His mother] Wanda talked about how she recommended they take BART as opposed to driving, and [his fiancee] Sofina talked about how Oscar didn’t even want to go. He wanted to stay home that night, and she kind of pushed him to get out and move about.

BOOKS Philippa Gregory is a master of crafting engaging tales of British royalty, often told from a woman’s viewpoint. Her latest book, “The White Princess,” on sale July 23, hinges on Elizabeth of York, who expects to marry Richard III until he is defeated by Henry Tudor — whom she is then forced to wed instead. This latest novel is part of Gregory’s Cousins’ War series, including “The White Queen,” which debuts as a Starz film at 8 p.m. on Aug. 10. What inspired you to write this book? I came across her when I was writing about her son Henry VIII, and I thought, “What an interesting character.” I came across this really well-concealed scandal that she had probably been the mistress of Richard III. … It was such a big scandal at the time,
Quoted
“Sometime when I meet with readers, I read them a passage from a novel and I read them a passage from history, and I ask them to guess what is what. … They never ever think [the history] can possibly be true.”Gregory and it has been genuinely suppressed. Most of your books feature women. What do you enjoy about writing female protagonists? I’ve spent most of my life working on women and history partly because that’s my interest and partly because here are women whose stories simply have not been told. We’ve got the stories that have been very well recorded, very well repeated of the men who are important at this time, but history has completely obscured the women.

What is your writing process? I write really anywhere. I don’t have to be at home. I can even write [while] traveling. When I’m writing something that’s got a lot of the characters in it, a lot of historical events, I find

IN MEMORY OF TONY METCALF, 1963-2013
20
In memory of Tony Legacy. Metro newspapers mourn editor-in-chief. I often teased Tony Metcalf, by far the longest-serving editor-in-chief in Metro US’s nearly 15-year history, that I’d been cast in an episode of “Newspaper Nightmares.” He had the Gordon Ramsay act down pat. In that thick British accent, he was never afraid to tell you that you stink, sometimes before bothering to learn your name, often using insults you’d never heard before. Tony arrived in 2008 on a mission from Metro headquarters to get us in shape. He wasn’t here to make friends. In fact, he seemed to go out of his way not to make friends. Tony was all business, with a newspaperman’s serious sense about the news. And without Tony’s ability to negotiate a contract or trim a budget, my gut tells me it’s unlikely you would be holding today’s edition. But while Tony wanted you to think he was the gruff, stoic Brit, that’s the one spot where he eventually failed. Tony turned a three-month assignment into a six-year stint as editor-in-chief and quickly became a beloved figure in the Metro universe. The amazing thing about Tony was that whatever started as a conversation about work would wind its way into a discussion of life. No one offered as much wisdom as he did when I got married, as my son was about to be born and especially when I lost three close family members in a very short stretch. Tony just always knew what to say. His door was always open — but once it closed, it
was like we were in our own universe. And he also had a knack of knowing just when to reach into the drawer for two glasses and a bottle. The weekends were painfully lonely for Tony. He loved living in New York and could never get his fill of baseball (he said it was a civilized sport). But having his family in the U.K. was tough. He always had a special look in his eye when talking about them and looked forward to the day when they would join him here. We spent years together, and I only wish we’d had decades more. When Tony fell ill, I knew it was the time that I needed to “have his back” the most. I had just left Metro. He put me at ease, like he always did, reminding me that he’d been the one who pushed me to take the new job, to do what was best for my family. As I told him in one of our last conversations, “Tony, you probably can’t grasp it, but when we worked together, you were part father figure, part boss and all friend. I’m not saying any sort of sad goodbye, I just want to make sure you know how much I’ve valued being by your side.” Reading the outpouring of condolences, I can tell I’m just one of many who felt that way. It’s a great credit to the man, Tony Metcalf — rest in peace, my friend.

A note from our CEO This Sunday, we lost our best friend and editor-in-chief, Tony Metcalf. For the last four years, we have not only built a very strong newspaper together but also a special friendship. Our friendship grew stronger and stronger from the first day we met. Tony always said that people didn’t get me — but he did. And through our many hours together we learned a lot about each other. His interest in other people was amazing, something that will

Wise words
Crack on Tony Metcalf was a journalist in the truest sense. He always reported the story and kept his opinion out of it, which couldn’t have been an easy
thing to do given his strong personality. He spoke with a thick Northern British accent that took time to adjust to, and his staff emails were filled with Britishisms, in which we would take great
delight. But he also had the common sense to never let any of this language leak into his writing, reporting or editing. Here are a few of our favorite Tony Metcalf expressions:
•
When discussing party plans he would write, “We’ll be arranging a bit of a knees-up.”
the paper, he might call it “a belter” or “a bobby dazzler.” •
•
When he was happy with how something looked in
When he was surprised by the details of a story, he might exclaim, “Christ on
a motorcycle!” •
And at the end of an encouraging email, which didn’t always come easily, he’d urge everybody to “crack on.” METRO/PH

remain with me forever. He cared as deeply about me and my family as I did about his. When you said “let’s do it,” I always knew it was not a tagline, but it meant that your full intellect and power were
behind the latest project in the wonderful world of Metro. You will always be in my heart. Faithfully, YGGERS MORTENSEN, CEO, METRO US
Quoted
“Tony loved the news, loved pushing the envelope, loved Metro, loved us. But he loved his family infinitely more. He talked about his wife and children every day and was so proud of each of them. His time may have been Metro’s, but his heart was always theirs.” STEPHANIE HINDERER, ART DIRECTOR, METRO US, 2007–2012
Tony Metcalf passed away Sunday at age 50 after a brief but heroic battle with colon cancer. Metcalf was born in 1963 in Newton Aycliffe, Northern England, and spent his formative years in Cramlington. He was the head of journalism at Darlington Technical College, where he had initially qualified as a journalist many years previously. Metcalf’s journalism career started in earnest as assistant editor at the Northern Echo, a daily regional morning newspaper serving the northeast of England. In 2000, he made the leap to editor-in-chief for Metro International, a position which saw Metcalf traveling the world, launching new Metro newspapers in more than 20 cities. In 2003, he left Metro to launch 7Days, a free daily tabloid published in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, where he worked for three years before selling the paper to the Associated Newspapers. He returned to Metro in 2008, this time to its U.S. division, to oversee publications in New York, Philadelphia and Boston, as well as the online department. Metcalf was a lifelong Newcastle United fan, a proud British citizen and a devoted family man to his wife, Lesley, and their two beloved children, Alex, 18, and Freya, 10. Donations can be given to St. Teresa’s Hospice in Darlington (www. darlington hospice.org. uk), where he spent his final days. METRO/DR
Staff memories
“In 1999, Metro International launched a newspaper in Newcastle upon Tyne. Unfortunately, the publication had to close down not long after the launch. This catastrophic venture had only one positive result: We recruited this tall, handsome, hardworking and tough guy to London to become Metro International’s first global editor-in-chief. His name was Tony Metcalf. To work with Tony has forever changed my view on what is possible. He set a new standard on what to expect from a newspaper professional in terms of work ethic, taste, good attitude and friendliness. For this experience I will always be grateful.” PELLE TORNBERG, CHAIRMAN, METRO US
“When Tony became aware that his illness was terminal, he connected with all of us and told us about his condition. Objectively and with sadness, of course, but never with pathos or making himself a victim. I think all of his thoughts were with his family and then with dear friends and colleagues. It is only a little more than one month ago that Tony and I exchanged some emails. I told him about how incredibly important he had been to me back in 2001 when Tony — then in the capacity of global editor-in-chief — was traveling the world launching new Metro newspapers. I remember him for his incredible dedication to the Metro project, and for his personal passion for the people he worked with. He showed me everything he knew (which was a lot), and we got on extremely well, personally and professionally. Tony’s editorial standards were very high, and his wealth of knowledge was enormous. Tony, thank you for being such a great friend and a fantastic mentor for me. I wish you could have stayed much longer.” PER MIKAEL JENSEN, CEO, METRO INTERNATIONAL
“All signs pointed in the same direction: It was going to be a horrible flight. Four Metro editors crammed on a seven-hour journey from Europe to the U.S. To make matters worse, British Airways had employed a man solely for the purpose of blowing balloon animals. The racket
“Tony thrived in the toils of 12-hour workdays and yells of deadlines where others whither. Sure, he was passionate and blustery — and at times cutthroat. All successful blue-collar blokes are, whether in England or America. But his best lessons for me come from his English subtlety. When there was harsh reality to convey, he’d give it straight and simple, then end with: ‘But there it is.’ For all his exaltations in the newsroom or boardroom, it was when he got quiet and gentle over a whiskey in his office that he shared the best insight.
Alas, the British empire has lost an epic missionary for English subtlety and substance, and Tony’s departure leaves a vast hole in the world of teeth-and-nails journalism. But there it is.” BRIAN MCCRONE, NATIONAL NEWS EDITOR, PHILADELPHIA NEWS EDITOR, 2006-2013
was intolerable. Tony Metcalf took the lead, ordering drinks for us all. After an hour of drinking and muttering, he had suddenly had enough. His solution? Tony stole a balloon sword from a girl of 7 or 8 — and hit her over the head with it. For what seemed like an eternity, we all waited for her reaction. But Tony had chosen well. The little girl took the sword back and then attacked. A balloon war broke out over the Atlantic Ocean. It was the best flight of my life — all thanks to a man unlike any other.” ERIC LJUNGGREN, INTERNATIONAL EDITORIAL COORDINATOR, METRO INTERNATIONAL, 1999-2005
“Tony once told me that he didn’t have time to care about employees’ personal lives. But that wasn’t true. At every opportunity, he would ask about my wife and son and life in general. He may have had a brusque exterior,
but at his root everything he did, every time he pushed us harder, was to make Metro better. It was to make us better. He succeeded on both accounts.” JOSH CORNFIELD, NATIONAL NEWS EDITOR, METRO US, 2007–2010
“About a year into working at Metro, I got on the wrong side of some local protest groups and started getting hate mail. People were starting blogs about me, posting complaints on our website and emailing Tony daily urging him to fire me. One day, it got so bad that I called Tony in an attempt to tell him my side of the story. Before I could get a few words out, he cut me off. ‘The more hate mail I get about you,’ he said, ‘the better I know you’re doing your job.’ Tony placed deep trust in his reporters and was a fearless advocate for their work.” ALEXANDRA WIGGLESWORTH, REPORTER, METRO PHILADELPHIA
“It was a pleasure working with the legend, a man who made news interesting and swearing across the newsroom a pleasurable pastime.” SEAN MCEWAN, PHOTOGRAPHER, 7DAYS, 2006-2008
“Tony Metcalf approached the world with the keen curiosity of a born journalist. A brief visit to his office to discuss work-related issues could blossom into a full-blown, 45-minute tutorial on anything from the vagaries of this year’s England Domestic cricket season to the politics of the Middle East. Endowed with a nimble mind, a quick wit and an easy charm, he was a true pleasure to work with. He was a doting father, a loving husband and a good friend; he will be sorely missed.” BOB EDMUNDS, DIRECTOR OF DIGITAL AND NATIONAL ACCOUNTS, METRO US
“On Fridays, when there were just a few of us in the office, I’d sometimes receive the coveted invitation to join Tony for an afternoon glass of whiskey. He’d ask each of us personal questions about our families and lives. It was in those times that Tony demonstrated not just his ability to be a great leader, but his talent for connecting with people.” CASSANDRA GARRISON, HEAD OF ONLINE CONTENT, METRO US
“The world lost a beacon of light, the news world lost a great journalist, a family lost a loving father and husband, and I lost a wonderful friend.” CLARK WEAVER, NIGHT PRODUCTION MANAGER, METRO US

Crop tops have come a long way from cheesy ’80s gym attire. Fashion houses, like Chanel and Calvin Klein, featured the look in their resort collections. And as these street stylers show, the look is just as chic dressed up with a maxi skirt as it is paired with laid-back jeans. Now that the crop top is firmly in high fashion’s repertoire, you can expect much more sophisticated options than those barely-there, skin-tight versions from your glorious teen days. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorites. KATHRYN GILBERT

Health. For children with asthma, the breathing gets a little tougher in July and August. They are so small you can’t even see them, but they might be your child’s worst enemy. Allergens like pollen and dust mites get worse during the summer, starting in late June, says Dr. Timothy Mainardi, cofounder of New York’s Hudson Allergy. These can trigger children’s allergies or asthma. Ozone levels are higher in the warm summer
months of July and August. Many city buildings might have a cocktail of allergens, too, he says — dust, or the even more unpleasant mice, rats and cockroaches. “If you look at a prewar building, they’ve been there longer than you, Mainardi notes. But kids don’t need to be sealed away from outside allergens, he says — just be careful not to bring them into bed when you get home. For example, if your children have been playing in the park all day, don’t let them strip off those clothes and lay them on the bed. Keep shoes outside the bedroom, too.
“Those are impregnated with pollen, Mainardi says. And keep an eye on when the ozone level is high — for example, the early afternoon is when ozone is at its peak. “When you have high sunlight and high traffic, that’s when you have high ozone, he says. Air conditioners help filter air and keep out humidity, he advises. And if nothing else? “Dunk them in the shower before they go to bed at night, he says. “It’s really the super-simple things.

Science. Can preschool habits predict future teenage alcohol use?

Signs of asthma How to tell if your child might have asthma: •
He or she has a musical, noisy breath.
•
Coughing at night is waking the child up.
•
He or she can’t keep up with friends at play.
•
The child has to stop to catch his or her breath.
A new study shows that how children act before they reach 5 years old might predict their alcohol use a decade later. The study, announced July 12 by the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, showed that childhood temperament can predict future alcohol engagement. Most risk factors for alcohol include roots in early childhood, according to the study, that stick with them through adolescence. The research team found that childhood temperament before 5 can predict alcohol use at age 15 and a half. “Most scientists who study alcohol use start studying people in adolescence, since that is when alcohol use is usually first initiated,” says Danielle
Dick, Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics professor and the study’s author. “But people don’t enter adolescence as blank slates. They have a history of life experiences that they bring with them, dating back to early childhood.” Both children who showed emotional and behavioral problems, and those consistently sociable, were at risk for alcohol use, researchers say. “This underscores the fact that drinking during adolescence is largely a social phenomenon,” Dick adds. “We know from other studies that most adolescent drinking is high risk — for example, binge drinking.” Full results will be published in the December issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research. Surviving student loans Money. We asked experts how they suggest students deal with the recent increase in student loan interest rates. Interest rates on U.S.government-backed student loans doubled at the beginning of the month, going from 3.4 to 6.8 percent, though politicians on both sides of the aisle have pledged to reevaluate the rate change. Either way, the struggle with student loan debt is an increasingly significant part of higher education in the United States, and our experts say that the easiest way to deal with it is by planning ahead. Frank Palmasani, a high school counselor and author of “Right College, Right Price,” advises students to think of college as a fit not only for them per-

have to disregard the pursuit of colleges based only on the student’s preferences,” he says. “In many ways, this [interest rate increase] reinforces the importance of incorporat-
ing prudent financial decision-making into the work of a high school guidance counselor,” he says. Eric Greenberg has been advising students on their college choices and
helping them prepare for tests since he founded Greenberg Educational Group in 1991. His advice to students struggling with increasing student loan debt is simple: “Taking on debt is a serious commitment.” “Students need to examine the likelihood of their making enough money to be able to comfortably pay back the loans in a reasonable number of years,” he says. His practical advice for students looking at schools is to begin at a less expensive school and transfer to a more prestigious, expensive college later in their degree process. “Since many employers and graduate schools look more closely at what a student has done recently, where the student graduates from tends to have the most impact.”

Hometown Harvey All-Star Game. Mets ace Matt Harvey finally got the nod as All-Star starter by Bruce Bochy yesterday. The worst-kept secret in sports was finally revealed Monday. Matt Harvey will start the 84th All-Star Game (8 p.m., FOX) for the National League. NL manager Bruce Bochy made the announcement during an early afternoon press conference. “It really wouldn’t have mattered what city we would have been playing in with the year he has had, the impressive numbers that he’s put up,” Bochy said. “He would have been the starting pitcher but the fact that it is here, it is an honor for me to name

All-Star Game. Rivera will pitch even if AL not in save situation Mariano Rivera hasn’t appeared in an All-Star game since 2009 in St. Louis but the AL hasn’t had a late lead in the last three years and Rivera was forced to miss last year’s game with a serious knee injury. Tuesday is his last appearance before the greatest closer of all time retires as the all-time saves leader in regular season, postseason and All-Star Game history and manager Jim Leyland plans on pitching him at some point even if there is not a save situation. “I think I’ve gone on record, I think it would probably be the most beautiful touch in the world if we can somehow get a lead on the National League and get the greatest closer of all time, coming out of the bullpen,” Leyland said. “I can assure you that. That would happen but we need to get that lead first.” Rivera pitched in a non-save situation when the game was held at the

Leyland skips Kuroda due to win totals Many analysts now subscribe to the theory that wins don’t mean everything when defining how good a pitcher is. Recent Cy Young voting in both leagues indicates that fact, but for AL manager Jim Leyland, they still matter. Leyland said that was the primary reason he selected his own right-hander when he named Max Scherzer the starter. Scherzer, with a 13-1 record, has capitalized on better run support, getting 119 runs. Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda has just eight wins but has the second-lowest ERA in the AL — half a run better than Scherzer. “At the end of the day, I added [Chris] Tillman because I’d almost be embarrassed not to take a guy that’s 11-3 to the All-Star Game,” Leyland said. Matt Harvey had been scheduled to pitch against the Pirates Saturday, but was skipped over due to blisters and the realization he would pitch tonight. Bruce Bochy said he and manager Terry Collins spoke about Harvey during the teams’ series in San Francisco last week. “He’s only limited to 100, 120 pitches. Not going to try and go too hard,” Bochy joked, before being serious. “Naturally, I talked to Terry a few times and we just played them in our town, and he let me know exactly where [Harvey’s] at. He’s fine; he’s healthy.”

World Peace to join Knicks on two-year deal NBA. The mercurial forward should bring toughness to his new squad.
The Knicks are giving peace a chance. The team has signed idiosyncratic wing Metta World Peace to a deal, according to the player himself. World Peace, formerly known as Ron Artest, played for St. John’s University and was born in Queens as well. He went to La Salle Academy in the East Village. “It was simple for me. No need to look at the contract, World Peace told MSG during his announcement. “What’s the number? A dollar? Just give me the paper and give the rest to charity. Let’s go.
not regarded as the same defensive player he was during his prime, but he should add a measure of toughness to the Knicks. The Knicks’ only previous addition this offseason was Andrea Bargnani, who is a face-up post player. The team also re-signed wing scorer J.R. Smith and point guard Pablo Prigioni. World Peace averaged 12.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last season for the Lakers. Both numbers were the best he’s had since 2008-09 with Houston. Head coach Mike Woodson expressed over the weekend he wasn’t worried about World Peace’s off-court antics or bad reputation.
Metta World Peace is coming back to his hometown. NBAE, GETTY IMAGES
The deal is reportedly for two years, and the Knicks will use the remainder of their mini mid-level exception — about $1.6 million per year — to sign him. World Peace, 33, is
