A 62-year-old Malden man pleaded not guilty to stealing a commercial ferry and letting it drift in Boston Harbor. The man was arraigned Tuesday on a warrant after the Dec. 25 incident. Authorities said when police responded to the drifting boat, they found the man onboard. He said he untied the Boston Harbor Cruises’ 68-foot passenger ferry at Long Wharf and that his girlfriend — Stevie Nicks — was the captain and driver. METRO Wicked awesome

Poll: Menino’s approval rating is very high Voters surveyed by Suffolk University had an overwhelmingly fond view of Boston Mayor Tom Menino, who garnered an 82 percent approval rate in the results released Tuesday. Institutions under Menino’s control were somewhat less popular, with the Boston Redevelopment Authority receiving a 36-29 favorable/unfavorable split, and only 33 percent of respondents saying that Boston Public Schools have improved over the last four years. Rolling Stone magazine is being put through the wringer after it put accused terrorist Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on its cover this week.

/ ROLLING STONE

‘Bomber’ magazine cover sparks outrage Big miss. The once iconic Rolling Stone mag is under fire for putting an accused terrorist on its cover. For decades, the cover of Rolling Stone has been a coveted and iconic space for groundbreaking musicians; Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix are just a few to grace its cover, and now, alleged Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev joins their ranks. Much of the nation responded with shock and outrage when news broke Tuesday that the 19-year-old terror suspect’s face was stamped on the magazine’s August issue. Rite Aid, CVS and Tedeschi are just a few businesses that are refusing to sell copies of the magazine, and a Facebook page called “Boycott Rolling Stone magazine for their latest cover” racked up nearly 80,000 “likes” in less than 24 hours. “I think it was a marketing ploy,” said Suffolk University

Communication Professor Robert Rosenthal. “I think they knew it would create some controversy, but I do believe people will stand by their pledge to boycott the magazine.” The music publication features a baby-faced, shaggyhaired Tsarnaev in a story titled “The Bomber,” which “delivers a deeply reported account of the life and times of Boston bomber Jahar Tsarnaev.” The story claims that Tsarnaev thought the 9/11 attacks could be justified, and told a friend who wanted to meet his older brother and alleged terror partner, Tamer-

lan, “No, you don’t want to meet him.” “It’s not the article that I have a problem with,” said Chris Redshaw, creator of the boycotting Facebook page. “It’s putting his face on the cover, a polished picture. I was outraged. It’s pouring salt in a very raw wound.” Boston Mayor Thomas Menino responded Wednesday with a letter to Rolling Stone, calling the cover story an “obvious marketing strategy that is ‘ill-conceived’” and “at best … re-affirms a terrible message that destruction gains fame for killers and their ’causes.’”

Standing their ground

Rolling Stone defends cover Rolling Stone released a statement Wednesday afternoon responding to the outpouring of criticism. “Our hearts go out to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, and our thoughts are always with them and their families.

“The cover story we are publishing this week falls within the traditions of journalism and Rolling Stone’s long-standing commitment to serious and thoughtful coverage of the most important political and cultural issues of our day.” By the time of the statement throngs of subscribers

had already taken to social media to voice outrage, and announce that they had canceled their subscriptions. Larry Thomas wrote on Facebook, “I am personally calling... and canceling my long time subscription and demanding money back because I am from Mass and am disgusted.”

A drug smuggler told a jury on Wednesday, July 17, that during a shakedown, James “Whitey” Bulger pulled a pair of guns on him and that one gun was loaded with one bullet, pointed at his head and the trigger pulled. But the gun didn’t go off, said William Lindholm, who testified against the 83-year-old alleged mob boss who he said held him at gunpoint and demanded $1 million. In 1983, an acquaintance asked him to meet up, so he did, and the acquaintance later drove him to a downtown club and directed him to go upstairs. That’s where Bulger and his partner Stephen Flemmi were waiting. Lindholm said Bulger pulled out two guns from under a towel placed on a cart and asked

When Bulger demanded Lindholm pay him $1 million, Lindholm decided to bluff and downplay the size of his marijuana business because he didn’t want to pay Bulger that much money. He said he eventually negotiated down to $250,000. Plan to freeze UMass cost State lawmakers have laid the groundwork for another major higher-education funding increase in next year’s budget that could once again stall tuition and

Recovering officer Donohue lending help to blood drive Every drop counts. Officer Dic Donohue said he owes his life to blood donations. Doctors said Transit Police Officer Richard Donohue lost nearly every drop of blood in his body after being shot during a standoff with the alleged Boston Marathon bombers on April 19. That’s why Donohue, 33, and his wife, Kim, helped put on a blood drive Thursday, July 18, at the Boston Marriott Copley Place — to help give back to those who helped him survive. “When I was shot in Watertown, I required 46 blood

products and about 26 units of blood. From what I understood, that’s more than two full people’s worth of blood. That’s why I’m here today. If people didn’t give blood in such amounts, I wouldn’t be here,” said Donohue, who was expected to host

part of the drive. “(The blood) replenished my system and kept my body functioning. I’m much better off than I could have been,” said Donohue. The event, which is also being organized by the American Red Cross, runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the hotel. About 150 people had signed up by the night prior. “I’m feeling pretty good. I’ve got a long way to go,” Donohue said. “I’ve learned to be very patient with things. I still have limitations, but I have to focus on the positive and move forward every day.”

Lawmakers. There is little political support for phone surveillance U.S. spy agencies went too far when they built a massive database of all daily telephone call records and may have jeopardized political support for the very law they relied on to create it, members of Congress said July 17. Lawmakers said at a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee that they doubted the legal provision had the votes to win renewal before it is set to expire in June 2015. The warning was the latest evidence of backlash against surveillance programs disclosed in the Guardian and the Washington Post from information the newspapers were given by Edward Snowden.

‘Metadata’

One of those programs is a database of telephone “metadata,” including numbers called and the length and time of calls, going back seven years.

U.S. officials said they had used the database only in limited circumstances and that it had proven essential to stopping attacks against civilians. The database included records about every phone call in the United States, not just those calls involving surveillance targets, lawmakers said. A surveillance court allowed the data collection based on a legal provision known as Section 215 of the Patriot Act, which was first enacted in October 2001 and authorizes the FBI, with court approval, to seize tangible business records that are relevant to a terrorism investigation. WHAT’S ON THE COVER OF ROLLING STONE

Opinion

TOM FOREMAN POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT FOR CNN

I will probably never grace the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, and I attribute this to a variety of factors. I’ve never recorded a trendy song full of whining and angst. I’ve never starred in a movie about vampires who enjoy whining and angst. I’ve never dated a celebrity who described our time together as “a lot of whining and angst.” So my shot at the cover is pretty much like a Carly Rae Jepsen ceremonial first pitch: a tad short of home plate. But now I can apparently add to the list that I’ve never been accused of terrorism. The magazine is causing an uproar, especially among Bostonians, for putting Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on the cover of its latest issue. He’s the surviving brother of the two accused of the Boston Marathon bombings, and Mayor Thomas Menino has called the magazine’s choice a “disgrace.” Some stores are

Rolling Stone defends the move by saying it’s part of a long history of reporting, looking into the issues facing young Americans and that sort of thing. And while other magazines and papers have used the same picture, they haven’t so far removed from the event, not so prominently and they aren’t in the rock star business. That’s why the mag is fending off comments from critics saying things like “music and terrorism don’t mix,” because while the art department knew the story was about terrorism, they seem to have forgotten that, for a wounded city, it also had to be about taste.

Which types of roles do you find challenging? I always find it really hard to play Americans.

It’s a horrible accent. It’s a wonderful accent! I just find it difficult and it paralyzes me. And I was very intimidated when I did the first “Red — just to get the tone right, of seriousness but comedy. I wasn’t just quite sure where you pitched it. I just watched Bruce like a hawk, basically. I tried to copy anything he was doing.

Dame Helen Mirren once again wields giant guns in “Red 2. / SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT LLC

Dame Helen Mirren is a serious thespian: A Shakespeareantrained actress who’s worked with the arty likes of Peter Greenaway (“The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover) and Julie Taymor (playing a female Prospero in “The Tempest). She won an Oscar for portraying Queen Elizabeth. But right now she’s an action star. In “Red 2, she resumes her role as Victoria, a 60-something assassin of moral murkiness who, as in the first “Red, gets huge applause whenever

she picks up giant guns and mows down baddies without mussing her hair or dirtying her designer dresses. What drew you to action in the first place? I did “National Treasure 2 and loved it absolutely — especially the action part of the action. The action part is just so fun, because you don’t have to act. There’s no acting in action. you know what you’re doing. In “National Treasure 2 I got to go on a wire, and I was just in heaven. I shouted to the director, “This is the best day of my life! I always wanted to fly. And there I was. What was it like returning for the second “Red? As Bruce [Willis] said, when we came back to do it, on the first day it was as though we had just been shooting the day before. On the first read [of the first one], none of us were quite

sure if these relationships were working, and if audiences were going to buy it. And knowing that the audience bought it and loved it, coming back then to these now known and loved characters, it was kind of a slightly different thing. Not that you absolutely needed to for such a light film, but did you do any research into assassins? I did, yes, I did a little bit. There’s a very interesting book about an Italian assassin from

the ’70s, when Italy was going through that really bad period of extreme left-wing groups. They assassinated businessmen. And that was fascinating. But really, you don’t want to get too serious about it. Although I thought that was an interesting character to play absolutely seriously. A realistic movie, not a fantasy, about an assassin would be very interesting.

Olds with guns Mary-Louise Parker and Bruce Willis stroll from an explosion in loud clothes in “Red 2.” / SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT LLC

The first “Red” was the kind of movie that was almost as good as one would irrationally hope it was. Slight but jolly, it took a pile of near-geriatric non-action stars — notably John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman — and put big guns in their hands. It’s a simple formula, but it works, especially

with a relaxed Bruce Willis as their ringleader Frank. The only significant drawback was that it had origin story duties. “Red 2” has no such burden. The MacGuffin this time involves a big, deadly bomb that has been wrongly blamed on Frank and company. Lost in America last time, the team globetrots to clear their name and find the real perp. Newbies include a former flame of Frank’s with a disappearingreappearing Russian accent (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Anthony Hopkins as a brilliant scientist locked away in a tower cell. The tone is a little more aligned with the cast, too. The director this time is Dean Parisot, who once upon a time helmed the delightful “Star Trek” twist “Galaxy Quest.” The

Review. A scary movie that’s actually scary

script for “Red 2” is far less clever than that: It’s a Bond ripoff with twists no one cares about, all of it merely a backdrop for rampant silliness and incongruous (albeit PG-13) violence. It delivers on both.

Hopefully this image from “The Conjuring” won’t haunt your dreams. WARNER BROS PICTURES

Sometimes it all comes down to craftsmanship. Director James Wan’s “The Conjuring” is a defiantly old school haunted house picture that elicits massive scares from careful camera placement and stunning sound design. Based on a “true story,”“The Conjuring” follows the Perron family as they relocate to a fixer-upper farmhouse in the Rhode Island woods. For some reason the last owners boarded up the basement and the dog won’t set foot in the place, but Mom and Dad (Lili Taylor and Ron Livingston) are too busy tending to their five daughters to notice that the clocks stop every night at 3:07 a.m. Things go from bad to worse, and the Perrons call in paranormal investigators Ed

and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), the controversial real-life protoGhostbusters who established the New England Society for Psychic Research. Far better acted than most horror movies, “The Conjuring” allows for quiet character moments and rare emotional investment. Though Wan made a name for himself with “Saw,” “The Conjuring” has little blood. The frights are in creaking floorboards, abruptly slamming doors and the distant sound of clapping. The hair-raising climax relies on our understanding of the geography of the home, laid out so clearly via Wan’s clean compositions that the sequence is a model of spatial relations. This is expert, classical filmmaking. SEAN BURNS

The actress (and niece of Julia Roberts) was arrested in her Montreal hotel room earlier this month after an argument with boyfriend Evan Peters (from “American Horror Story”) reportedly left Peters with a bloody nose and bite marks on his skin, according to TMZ. Peters declined to press charges, and Rob-

erts was promptly released. Sources say she “seemed fine” a few days later. The actors’ reps released a joint statement, saying, “It was an unfortunate incident and misunderstanding. Ms. Roberts was released after questioning and the couple are working together to move past it.” Is this just a taste of bad publicity to come for the actress? Only time will tell.

Robert Downey Jr. is a rich, rich man Remember in the late ’90s and early aughts when Robert Downey Jr. could hardly get a gig in Hollywood (the guy was fired from “Ally McBeal” which, next to staring in “Sharknado,” see below, is pretty much rock bottom in Hollywood)? Well, it pays to clean up your act. The actor, who portrays Tony “Iron Man” Stark in the Iron Man and Avengers movies, earned an estimated $75 million last year, making him the highest-

paid actor in Hollywood, according to Forbes. Channing Tatum is next up due to the wild success of “Magic Mike,” which he and director Steven Soderbergh financed themselves, and Mark Wahlberg earned a $52 million payday thanks to “Ted.” So, all you have to do to make a lot of money is become an action hero, make a film about a talking teddy bear or strip to your skivvies. Got it.

‘Sharknado 2’ is happening You did this to yourselves, America. Syfy has greenlit a sequel to Twitter-bait “Sharknado,” the made-for-tv movie starting Tara Reid and Ian Ziering. It will be called “Sharknado 2: The Shark Who Loved Me.” (Jokes

people, jokes.) “Every once in a while, there is a perfect storm – on television. The fans are clamoring for a sequel. Or perhaps it will be a prequel,” the network said in a statement.

Where in the world is Beyonce’s new album? Music. The anticipation for her latest is driving us nuts. Do we really have to wait until November?

JAN. 10 The February 2013 GQ cover story announces that Beyonce’s album could come out as early as April. She says the album will be mostly R&B. “I always have my Prince and rock/soul influences,” says Beyonce. “There’s a bit of D’Angelo, some ‘60s doo-wop. And Aretha [Franklin] and Diana Ross.”

FEB. 11 The singer hints that the new album will be “a lot more sensual” and “empowering.” So, she’s still a fierce, independent woman — but she’s crazy in love and bootylicious?

APRIL 4 The new single “Grown Woman” is released in a minute-long Pepsi ad. APRIL 23 BFF Gwyneth Paltrow says Beyonce’s album will be out soon. She told Digital Spy that she’s heard a “lot, lot, lot” of the songs.

MARCH 10 A fake track list for Bey’s new album surfaces online. MARCH 17 Beyonce releases “Bow Down/I Been On” on her website. “I took some time to live my life, but don’t think I’m just his little wife,” she sings, adding, “Bow down, bitches.” MARCH 19 MediaTakeOut reports that Beyonce’s new album will come out in fall 2013 now because the two songs that were released — “Nuclear” and “Bow Down” — were not doing so well. “No

Back in 1996, a few years before the Magnetic Fields went from an indie band with a cult following to the critically acclaimed collective that they are today, Stephin Merritt and Claudia Gonson became involved with a local side project headed by Chris Ewen called Future Bible Heroes. “It started in Boston and it evolved when Stephin moved to New York,” says Ewen in an in-person interview near

his home in Central Square. “My band Figures on a Beach broke up and I was still working on a lot of instrumental things. One day Stephin said, ‘Why don’t you just have someone write lyrics and sing songs to your music.’ I said ‘Well, why don’t you do it because you’re a great lyricist.’ So we messed around and wrote some songs.” With their new “Partygoing” album, Future Bible

Heroes remain scathingly satirical and inherently fun. “I think that we have always straddled that line of being really perky with lyrics that maybe aren’t as upbeat,” says Ewen. Though Merritt has hearing issues that keep him off the road, Ewen and Gonson are joined by two additional players for the first Future Bible Heroes tour since 2002. NOLAN GAWRON

GIVE YOUR COCKTAIL PRETENSIONS A DAY OFF ON A PROVINCETOWN BAR CRAWL

Going out

Become your own barista If you’re like us, getting a great cup of coffee in the morning means finding a pair of clean pants and schlepping over to a cafe, where you watch a smug barista pull an absurd number of knobs and levers. Wouldn’t it be nice to get your caffeine fix in the comfort of your own home? Of course, the fine art of brewing isn’t quite as easy as dumping a pot of hot water over some crushed beans, which is why the term barista exists in the first place. Not to worry — North Carolina-born Counter Culture Coffee is hosting a new series of “Brewing Basics” workshops. The labs are part of its “Counter Intelligence Program,” which aims to educate customers and industry workers alike. It turns out brewing is all about balance. “Coffee is an incredibly complex beverage, and when one element stands out more than the oth-

ers, that cup isn’t balanced,” says Counter Culture’s Lydia Iannetti. “You can absolutely affect those flavors ... by brewing thoughtfully.” Further, the workshops will help you identify appropriate grind sizes, different brewing times and more. Plus, you’ll walk away with a new ceramic pour-over brewer with which to practice your new skills. CASSANDRA LANDRY

It might sound weird to call a longstanding, popular tradition one of the city’s best kept secrets, but the magic of the Provincetown fast ferry was certainly a revelation to me when I availed myself of it for the first time this month. The ferry runs between Provincetown and the Seaport multiple times a day and, as a scenic trip of just an hour and a half (as opposed to the roughly 13 days it takes to drive to the Cape in the summer), it’s a game-changer in terms of quick getaways. As an added bonus, ditching your car means you’re free to complete a lengthy bar crawl after a day at the beach. Surprisingly, considering its wealth of fine restaurants and steady influx of urbanites from around the world, Provincetown isn’t exactly what I’d call a cocktail nerd’s paradise. Finding a shot of fernet anywhere proved impossible (although we were able to assuage our digestif needs with Averna at Patio). There are a few restaurants nudging P-town’s cocktail scene in the right direction. Local 186 is one of the many picturesque, cottage-style op-

tions along Commercial Street where, aside from a good beer selection (Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale, the signature Local 186 Lager and Porter Square Porter on draft), you’ll find a wellmade Blackfish Negroni made with Hendricks, Campari, Carpano Antica vermouth and a Luxardo cherry. You’ll also find an Old Fashioned made with Eagle Rare bourbon, Peychaud’s bitters and soda (with muddled fruit and sugar). Or — just this once — you could drop your pretensions, give your “serious cocktail guy” persona a vacation and let yourself try the Ruby Red Dress Martini made with Absolut

Ruby Red, ruby red grapefruit juice and Cointreau, with a sugar rim. Just promise yourself you won’t make a habit of it, and you might actually enjoy it. Up toward the end of Bradford Street, more removed from the center of the town, Victor’s is another charming option for dinner and drinks. Like Local 186, Victor’s boasts a good beer list plus a more extensive wine selection and a cocktail menu that runs a varying gamut. The Port of Manhattan — made with W.L. Weller 12-year bourbon, orange bitters, and a ruby port — was drier than a traditional Manhattan, and better for it. It also apparently contained about a pint of booze, which made the rest of the night more interesting. Speaking of the rest of the night, our bar hop ended, like most good (meaning bad) ones do, at a dive. The Underground Bar has all the standard trappings of a good dive: pool, pingpong, and loud punk rock. But it doesn’t have fernet. “What are you, a Boston chef or something?” the sassy bartender asked. Sure, something like that.

It’ll probably be funniest for current or former Magic players, but any fantasy fan will get it well enough — wizards, dragons, epic battles ... Yeah.

If you don’t know the Coolidge Corner Theatre — Brookline’s approximately 80-year-old, nonprofit cinema — you’re either new to the city or a total cinephobe. Head projectionist Matt Gress has spent a decade there, and then some, screening indie films, classics and “classics.’ We hopped the C line over there to talk shop.

Anything coming up at the Coolidge you’re looking forward to? We’re going to be showing “Cannibal Ferox” at the end of the month.

You mentioned you’re a big fan of grind house. Remember Tarantino’s “Grindhouse?” I didn’t see that. ... I didn’t want to see a replica.

Is that anything like “Cannibal Holocaust?” It’s somewhat of a rip-off. This woman’s trying to prove that cannibals don’t exist in South America. She gets in with some people who piss off the natives, and the natives kill them and eat them. It’s related in that it ... tries to top it in terms of gore and atrocities. There’s a penis amputation.

Wonder if that’s part of the reason those movies didn’t make much money. Yeah, they spent more on those films than anyone would have ever spent on an actual grind house film.

HARBORING A WISH TO GET OUT OF TOWN?

You can dine harborside on Cape Ann Brewery Co.’s patio.

Bostonians are so blessed location-wise. Two iconic harbors, Gloucester and Plymouth, are but a short summer day trip away. In Gloucester, on Sunday afternoons at the Cape Ann Brewery Co. (a South Shore mainstay that’s nearing its 10th anniversary), a jazz duo swings inside, but it’s the outdoor real estate that offers the real lure. A seat on the covered harborside deck provides choice views of boats large and small, gleaming or charmingly rusting and purposed for industry or hobby. The nautical scenery is feast enough for your eyes, but add a cold beer and some plump, sweet fried clams or the larger fish platter (piled with golden battered haddock, clams, calamari and

shrimp) and you’ve captured summer in New England. Set beside Plymouth Harbor, Nix’s Plymouth is a relatively new waterfront spot. This sister restaurant to Nix’s Mate in the FiDi Hilton opened in April and boasts prime sea-view real estate on Plymouth’s Town Wharf. Patio space will be completed soon (hopefully before the summer is out!), but,

for now, the restaurant’s wallto-wall windows grant suitably beautiful vistas of the harbor. The Italian-leaning menu includes fresh pastas alongside out-of-state dishes like a smoked Texas beef brisket. Most patrons, however, come for the seafood. From quahog lollipops (clam-filled corn bread skewered dumplings) to buttery shrimp scampi-topped

flatbread and a succulent lobster platter, it’s all about the oceanic fare at Nix’s. Nix’s sleek gray decor makes for cool, smart ambience but — like Cape Ann Brewery — it also offers casual dining options, with burgers and bar bite standbys. On weekend nights, Nix’s also has live entertainment, with local bands and DJs performing on-site. Dessert is often a passable afterthought in casual restaurants, but Cape Ann Brewery’s lemon tart is superbly sweet and sharp, while Nix’s bitter and sweet stout shake is damn drinkable.

Cancer | June 21-July 22. When doing work that requires an eye for detail, you had better keep your mind on the task at hand. A lack of attention could quickly ruin your endeavor. Leo | July 23-Aug. 22. Be content with what you’re doing and with whom you are sharing your time. Once you start wishing you were elsewhere, you’ll lose what the moment has to offer. Virgo | Aug. 23-Sept. 22. It’s marvelous when we can take others at their word, but several people might promise you things today that they have no intention of fulfilling. Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22. Usually, you’re pretty good at clarifying your objectives. Today, however, your system might go awry. Scorpio | Oct. 23-Nov. 21. If you plan to visit some shops that offer tantalizing merchandise that you know you can’t afford, it would be best to leave your credit cards at home. Now’s not the time to be a spendthrift. Sagittarius | Nov. 22-Dec. 21. Any project or endeavor that doesn’t have your wholehearted support shouldn’t be pursued today. It would be best to temporarily shelve such matters until you’re in a more favorable mood.

Capricorn | Dec. 22-Jan 20. If a friend does something worthy of praise, be sure to compliment him or her. However, don’t use false flattery. Aquarius | Jan. 21-Feb 18. You’re a generous and giving person, and these are admirable traits. However, don’t allow an unworthy manipulator to use flattery on you and abuse your good nature. Pisces | Feb. 19-March 20. If your objectives aren’t clearly and realistically defined, you could go off on an unproductive tangent and end up having little or nothing to show for your effort. Aries | March 21-April 20. Don’t expect to be too convincing if you try to sell others on some ideas or concepts that you don’t truly believe in. It takes sincerity to generate support. Taurus | April 21-May 21. If you ask someone for an opinion on an important matter, make sure it is a person who will tell you the truth. That’s the only way you’ll get the advice you need. Gemini | May 22-June 20. Re: ‘Known anti-vac crusader Jenny McCarthy to share her ‘view’’ (Metro, July 16) Kick a—! You totally just saved lives today. Your message saved lives. That influence and dispelling of anti-science myths and misconception IS very probably the difference between a mother or custodian of a little one making a protective choice rather than a lazy one or a misguided and ignorantof-the-facts one. This pedagogy

ETHAN BEDELL, VIA EMAIL

I wish to compliment you for calling shenanigans on wingnut behavior and for doing so without a whole batch of weak-as-water qualifiers. McCarthy’s simply wrong. And dangerous. The same could be said for Barbara Walters and all the other “journalists” who abet witchcraft, astrology and all the other mumbo jumbo out there. ALEXANDER DERING,

Re: ‘The ups and downs of Chris Brown’ (Metro, July 16) So you’re printing articles by Chris Brown apologists now? You disgust me. Stacy Cruz must be a member of the Chris Brown-loving “Team Breezy” club for delusional fanatics who love an abuser of women. It’s bizarre, but then I guess serial killers get a lot of love letters in prison, too. When tallying his “points,”

she conveniently leaves out all of his lyrics where he acts like a victim, brags, trolls and refuses to take any responsibility for his actions. Chris Brown is not three “points” ahead in anything, other than vileness, criminality and utter lack of talent. He deserves no “points” for winning a bunch of meaningless, silly industry awards for his lousy “music.” IKE HULL, VIA EMAIL

MLB power rankings | by Ryan Hannable No. 1

No. 2

Red Sox (58-39)

Best of the rest

No. 7

Cardinals (57-36)

Athletics (56-39)

Braves (54-41)

St. Louis entered the All-Star break having won seven of its last nine and has the best record in the NL. Even with the best record, the Cards are only up one game in the NL Central, with the Pirates right on their tails.

The A’s are for real and showed it by taking three of four over the weekend from the Red Sox to take a twogame lead over Texas in the AL West.

The Braves’ 3.24 team ERA is right behind the Pirates for the best in the NL, and they have a plus-78 run dierential, also second in the NL.

No. 3

The Red Sox endured a tough 10-game West Coast trip and came out of it 5-5, with a four-game winning streak in the middle. The team’s oense continues to impress, as at one point last week it had recorded nine or more hits in 18-of-19 games.

No. 4

Pirates (56-37) Going into the break winners of three of four, the Pirates are neck-and-neck with the Cardinals for ďŹ rst place in the NL Central. Right now there isn’t a better pitching sta in baseball, with a 3.07 ERA.

GET THE EDUCATION THAT WORKS

No. 5

No. 10 Tigers (52-42) — The AL Central is now one of the most competitive divisions in all of baseball, with the Tigers and Indians battling one another for ďŹ rst.

•

No. 11 Indians (51-44) — Cleveland has allowed just 2.25 runs per game in its last four games. Not surprisingly, they were all Tribe victories.

•

No. 12 Yankees (51-44) — New York lost two straight before the break, but can feel good about their pitching, as they are tied for second in the AL in ERA.

•

No. 13 D’backs (50-45) — Although they dropped three spots in the rankings after losing four of seven last week, they’re still in ďŹ rst place in the NL West due to a great oensive ďŹ rst half.

No. 8

Rays (55-41)

Orioles (53-43)

The Rays moved into the Top 5 this week by winning nine of their last 10 while moving into sole possession of second in the AL East.

The Orioles made one of the biggest jumps in the rankings this week, getting into the Top 10 by winning four of their last ďŹ ve games.

No. 6

•

No. 9

Rangers (54-41)

Reds (53-42)

Losers of four of their last ďŹ ve, the Rangers have fallen out of ďŹ rst in the AL West. Oense has been the issue.

Cincy was at the top of the NL Central much of the ďŹ rst half, but has fallen o the past few weeks and is now in third.

Yanks finally back in town MLB. New York is at Fenway for the first time in the 2013 season this weekend. The last time the Yankees played at Fenway Park was Sept. 13, 2012, and the playoff-bound New Yorkers blanked the Sox, 2-0. Boston fielded the likes of Scott Podsednik, James Loney, Ivan De Jesus and Mauro Gomez that day. Things have greatly changed for the better for the Red Sox, while things have slowly spiraled down-

ward for the Yanks. Boston has a league-best 58 wins heading into this weekend’s series at Fenway, while the Yankees are six games back in the division race and are also looking up at both Tampa Bay and Baltimore in the standings. New York is 9-5 in the month of July. Longtime captain Derek Jeter came back to

the team from injury on July 11, but suffered a slight quad strain in his first game back from an ankle injury that caused him to miss the first three months of the season. Felix Doubront (6-3, 3.91 ERA) will get the ball for the Red Sox July 19 (7 p.m., NESN) and will face Andy Pettitte (7-6, 4.39 ERA). John Lackey (7-6, 2.78 ERA) takes

the hill for Boston July 20 (4 p.m., FOX), going up against Hiroki Kuroda (8-6, 2.65 ERA). In the series finale July 21 (8 p.m., ESPN), Jon Lester (8-6, 4.58 ERA) looks to get back on track against CC Sabathia (9-8, 4.07 ERA).
