Curtis Peterson / NYPD

NYPD seek suspect in shooting that wounded five Cops are searching for a man they say shot and wounded five people in Brooklyn on Saturday, police said. Curtis Peterson, 23, was with a group of men near 191 Menahan St. in Bushwick at about 2 p.m. when he allegedly pulled out a gun and fired the shots, police said. Two women, ages 37 and 52, and three men, ages 22, 45 and 67 were injured in the shooting. Two were taken to Brookdale Hospital, two to Elmhurst General Hospital, and one was taken to Kings County Hospital, police said. All were listed in stable condition. A 9mm Taurus semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene, police said. Peterson is described as being 5-foot-10, 160 pounds with brown eyes and short black hair. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. LAURA SHIN

Law groups oppose Kelly as DHS head Controversy. The groups cite stopand-frisk as reason for opposition. Citing the NYPD’s controversial stop-and-frisk practice, minority law enforcement groups have come out against Police Commissioner Ray Kelly being chosen to run the Department of Homeland Security. “DHS Secretary would have to be somebody who has a balance of both law enforcement and protect-

ing people’s civil rights,” said Anthony Miranda, head of the National Latino Officers Association. The association, along with two black law enforcement groups, the Grand Council of Guardians and 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, held a rally on Sunday against appointing Kelly to the position, saying he is unqualified. They will continue speaking out against him. The groups stressed the police department’s use of stop-and-frisk, which critics say disproportionately

targets blacks and Latinos. “I can only see him nationalizing what is a New York City problem,” Miranda said. The groups spoke after President Barack Obama praised Kelly, indicating he would consider assigning him to the job. “Ray Kelly’s obviously done an extraordinary job in New York and the federal government partners a lot with New York,” Obama told Univision last week.

Bad practices Three minority law organizations have come out against Ray Kelly leading the DHS. •

The city’s controversial stop-and-frisk policy is the reason they don’t think he should lead the organization.

Other reasons given for the resistance were the number of civil lawsuits brought against NYC.

Plane’s nose collapses as it lands

LaGuardia Airport was the site of the incident, which is under investigation. / GETTY IMAGES

Several passengers suffered minor injuries after a Southwest Airlines plane landed at LaGuardia Airport with a nose gear problem early on Monday evening. “Southwest Airlines Flight 345, a Boeing 737 arriving at LaGuardia from Nashville reported possible front landing gear issues before landing,” the FAA said in a statement, according to NBC News. “The plane’s

nose gear collapsed as the aircraft landed on Runway 4 at 5:45 p.m.” The flight was carrying 149 passengers, according to the Associated Press. The nose of the Boeing 737 rested on the runway and emergency crews could be seen surrounding the damaged plane. Passengers were led out through an inflatable slide on the side of the plane. It was

not immediately clear if the plane landed without its nose gear extended fully or if it collapsed just after it landed on the runway. Southwest Airlines said that they were investigating the incident. “Standby for more information regarding #Flight345 BNA-LGA,” Southwest tweeted. “We are gathering details and will post a statement soon.” ANNA SANDERS

Upgrades to G train in new MTA budget plan New plan. The MTA rolled out plans to increase service in a new budget released on Monday. The MTA will use $7.9 million to improve its service, increasing the frequency of G trains, extending M train service on the weekend and boosting bus routes. Gov. Andrew Cuomo and MTA officials announced the plans Monday. “For the second year in a row, the state has invested in significant enhancements and expansions to our state’s transit system that will improve the experience of the eight million commuters who use the MTA,” Cuomo said. Another $5.9 million will be used to clean up

stations, improve turnstile layouts for easier commuting, and install security cameras. The improvements will be phased in over the coming year. G trains will now operate every eight minutes as opposed to every 10 minutes during weekday

evening rush hours. The change will cut wait times for 51,600 straphangers. An additional eight stops will be added to the M line on the weekend. The line now stops at only five stations on the weekend. Service improvements will help 37,000 customers. The MTA will also restore service to five bus routes that were cut in 2010 and implement additional service along others. The new budget also includes $2.6 million to fund five new weekday trains and extended weekend service on the Long Island Rail Road. Metro-North Railroad will invest another $1.7 million to add real-time customer displays in all New York state stations by 2020.

Election 2013. Challenge to Spitzer’s petitions withdrawn The Republican strategist who filed a challenge to Eliot Spitzer’s petitions for comptroller has withdrawn his objection due to financial reasons, New York Daily News reports. Donors who could help pay for the legal challenge that could remove Spitzer from the race are hesitant to do so, E. O’Brien Murray said. “As of right now, we can’t continue the challenge. Because people are afraid of retribution, Spitzer gets a free pass on this,” he said. Murray said he filed the challenge because he believes Spitzer’s political

comeback following his 2008 prostitution scandal should not be so easy. “I’ve been talking to many others across the city, and they’re extremely put off by the idea that Eliot Spitzer thinks he can come back in after what he put the people of New York through,” Murray said last week. Spitzer announced on July 7 that he is running for comptroller. He needed to collect 3,750 signatures in just four days to qualify. After reportedly paying canvassers $800 per day, Spitzer managed to turn in 27,000 signatures on deadline day. ANNA SANDERS

Wading in. The senator has picked a side in the city comptroller race. New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand endorsed Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer for city comptroller Monday. Gillibrand cited his experience as a trustee of the city’s Employee Retirement System in her endorsement, but did not mention Stringer’s main competition in the race, former Gov. Eliot Spitzer. Less than two weeks after women’s groups rallied against Spitzer’s campaign, three groups, including the National Organization for Women NYC, NARAL Pro-Choice New York and Planned Parenthood NYC, also endorsed Stringer

Monday. Gillibrand’s endorsement in the comptroller race comes as a surprise after she distanced herself from the mayoral primaries in May, on WNYC’s Brian Lehrer show. Despite her assertion, Gillibrand voiced some support for City Council Speaker Christine Quinn on the same program.

Prince William’s wife, Kate, gave birth to a baby boy, their first child who will be third in line to the British throne, ending hours of fevered anticipation outside the London hospital where the child was delivered. “The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news,” Clarence House, Prince William’s office, said in a statement. “Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight.” The boy’s name will be announced in due course, the statement said, but bookmakers make George the favorite name. As the birth was announced, a loud cheer went up from the wellwishers and media gathered outside St. Mary’s Hospital in west London, where William was born to the late Princess Diana in 1982. “Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild,” Prince Charles, William’s father and heir

Born on cusp, royal baby is a demure Cancer As the world awaited the arrival of the royal baby and made predictions about gender, Xandra the Astrologer was more preoccupied with the baby’s sun sign. July 22 is on the cusp between two signs — Cancer and Leo — making a huge difference to the baby’s destiny. Here’s how: Since the royal baby was born before 5 p.m. London time, he was born with Sun in Cancer

(like laid-back Daddy William and demure, private Grandma Diana). If the birth had happened after 5 p.m., the baby would have been a glamorous, noble, attentionseeking Leo. Leos are made for royalty because they love attention and acclaim, whereas Cancers shun the limelight and

prefer to blend in with the commoners. A Leo is driven to cultivate honor, prestige and accomplishment. A Leo is much more careerdriven, whereas Cancers are happy living a somewhat more humble life of house, family, children and emotional security. Royal baby fans swarm Buckingham Palace Media frenzy. Fans and whirring media helicopters quickly descended on Buckingham Palace. Soon after Buckingham Palace announced the birth of the heir to the British throne, a notice was placed on an easel in the palace’s forecourt just like the announcement of Prince William’s birth on June 21, 1982, a traditional element of royal pageantry. The hundreds of wellwishers who had gathered at Buckingham Palace rejoiced at the news. “It’s a boy! one man shouted, prompting a mass chorus of cheers from the crowds outside the palace that quickly swelled to 15 deep. Earlier during the day, there were only a few inter-

casion, there were not the throngs of royalists, tourists and well-to-doers waving the Union Jack but the reaction was more pareddown with just a smattering of fans clad in royalstyle regalia. RICHARD PECKETT AND ANTHONY JOHNSTON, METRO WORLD NEWS

British spotlight

Royal baby dominates world media, like it or not From live TV coverage of a hospital door to a gaggle of royal baby experts, the world’s media was in a frenzy on Monday over the arrival of the future heir to the British throne, offering moment-by-moment coverage if very little actual news. For three weeks photographers from across the globe have been camped outside St. Mary’s Hospital waiting for the arrival of Prince William and Kate’s first child. As Kate headed to hospital around dawn yesterday, TV stations and news websites from the United States to Australia pulled out articles and picture galleries about every possible aspect of the royal baby from name to gender to lineage. Snowden may be able to leave the Sheremetyevo airport while his asylum bid is processed. / GETTY IMAGES

Lawyer: Snowden hopes to be out of airport by tomorrow Leaker. He has been staying in a Moscow airport since June 23. Former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden hopes to be granted papers by tomorrow allowing him to end his month-long stay in the transit area of a Moscow airport and move to the city center, his Russian lawyer said yesterday. Anatoly Kucherena, who helped the Ameri-

can file his bid for temporary asylum in Russia on July 16, said Snowden believed it would be unsafe to try to travel to Latin America soon because of U.S. efforts to return him to the United States to face espionage charges. Snowden’s bid for temporary asylum in Russia may take up to three months to process, but he can pass through customs based on the initial response to his request, Kucherena added. Snowden, whose presence at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport since June 23 has strained

U.S.-Russian relations, has not ruled out seeking Russian citizenship, Kucherena said. Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua have all said they would grant him political asylum, but none is reachable by direct commercial flight from Moscow.

College savings expert Joe Hurley thinks that $250 a month is the optimal amount to contribute to a child’s 529 plan. Mark Kantrowitz, a college guru at www. edvisors.com, leans toward a one-third approach — one-third of your child’s tuition should come from savings, one-third from current income and one-third from loans. What is the right amount for you? It’s anyone’s guess. Since 529 plans started nationally in 1996, U.S. families have been paying more attention to saving for college. Assets in tax-advantaged 529 accounts are growing — now at more than $180 billion in assets, according to Financial Research Corp. But that is a drop in the bucket compared with the $1 trillion student loan market. REUTERS

Daniel Radcliffe is very skinny “regardless of the extreme London heat wave.” You know, if this were any other star, I’d say something like: “What is going on with Daniel (cough, drugs, cough)?” But it’s Daniel Radcliffe! No way! He’s just going to look sickly and we will accept the reason his publicist gives us. And this, my friends, has never happened before in this column. Is the birth of the Royal Baby making me mushy toward all things British?

Daniel Radcliffe’s recent gaunt, exhausted appearance has fans worried, but his rep insists it’s all workrelated, telling Yahoo’s omg! that Radcliffe’s current stint in “The Cripple of Inishmaan” onstage in London “is a very demanding role, physically. At every night’s performance there is a large crowd at the stage door, and he takes the time to sign autographs and pose for pictures at length,” his rep adds,

To be or not to be?

Today, Rashida Jones is excited about Kate Middleton giving birth, Dwayne Johnson is a little smelly, Olivia Wilde is proud of her pooch and Mark Duplass is trying to avoid the search engine.

Aaron Paul, Bryan Cranston and a mask of a bald Walter White spoke onstage at the “Breaking Bad” panel during Comic-Con on Sunday. The creator of the hit show, Vince Gilligan, was mum on the series finale but did say, “I am satisfied by the ending. I hope you will be, too. My writers and I, and everyone in front of the lens and behind it, I think, is feeling pretty good about it.” The mask of Walter White had no comment.

‘Law & Order’ star Dennis Farina dead Dennis Farina, the actor with the best ‘stache in the business, died yesterday at the age of 69. The “Law & Order” star died in a Scottsdale, Ariz., hospital after suffering a blood clot in his lung. The former-cop-turnedactor also appeared in films including “Get Shorty” and ‘’Saving Private Ryan.”

What will happen with ‘Glee’? In the wake of star Cory Monteith’s death, many expected “Glee” to push back its fall premiere date to regroup. And it has – from Sept. 19 to Sept. 26. Showrunner Ryan Murphy says that “Glee” is opting to go back into production as soon as possible, thanks to Monteith’s former girlfriend and co-star, Lea Michele. Murphy said that

Michele didn’t want her boyfriend’s death to hurt the livelihoods of his friends and co-workers. “[Executive producer] Brad Falchuk and I talked to Lea and really asked her what she wanted to do,” he told Deadline. “We laid out every possible option. And she was very adamant that she thought it was best for the cast and crew to

get back together sooner [rather] than later so that mortgages could be paid and people could take care of their families.” Murphy said that the first two episodes will be Beatles tributes, which were already written. The third episode will address Monteith’s death, and after that the writers will take a hiatus to plan the season. METRO/MT

Allison Lynn’s life started to parallel the characters in her book. / KELLEY JORDAN

Parting with NY is such sweet sorrow Novel. Two New Yorkers get priced out of their East Coast lifestyle. Thousands of people come to New York every year. They swear they will never leave. Then, a few years down the road, they meet someone. They have a child. And suddenly paying $4,000 a month for a onebedroom doesn’t seem so attractive anymore. But where do you go when a city has captured your heart? When it is as much as a part of your relationship as your partner? For Nate and Emily, the protagonists of Allison Lynn’s evocative new novel, “The Exiles, they flee to Rhode Island. But as soon as they get there (along with their 10-month-old child), they quickly discover all is not as postcard-perfect as they dreamed their new life would be. For Lynn, the experience of writing “The Exiles was a case of life imitating art. “When I began writing the book, I thought I was someone who would be in New York forever; that the strain wasn’t going to get to me. And a few early drafts into writing the book, my life started to par-

allel theirs. It was slightly spooky. Like Nate and Emily, Lynn and her husband were priced out of the city once they had a child; after a job offer came in, they decided to “take up stakes to move. There are many subjects at play in “The Exiles: being priced out of a city despite your Wall Street salary, bombshell secrets that both Nate and Emily keep from one another, old familial drama and the strain of parenthood in our materialistic age. But for Lynn, the story kept coming back to “the disparities between the haves and the almosthaves, she says about the book’s main theme. “The people who all their lives thought they are going to break into that upper income bracket, and reach

their late 30s and discover it may never happen. Lynn says that her family’s move to Minneapolis has gone much more smoothly than Nate and Emily’s relocation to Newport. “We had a much smoother transition in just about every way, she laughs. “I’d like to think that we aren’t keeping secrets from each other, the way they were. And yet — she can’t shake New York. “It is still where I considered home, and it’s the place where when my plane lands, I drive in, I still felt like I am back home. We dream of moving back. But we have to dream of that lottery ticket first.

PATRICK WILSON The star talks about putting horror back on to a 1970s level.

‘CONJURING’ UP CLASSIC SCARES When it comes to discussing contemporary horror movies, “restraint” isn’t usually a word that comes up too often. But it’s one actor Patrick Wilson keeps coming back to when describing how director James Wan (“Saw,” “Insidious”) approached “The Conjuring.” Based on a case file by real-life paranormal investigators Ed Warren (Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga), the film is presented as if it were released during its early ‘70s setting. It’s a throwback in the best possible way.

This movie is seriously terrifying. Yeah, the movie’s no joke. I watched it again last night, and my friend who was with me — who had also seen it with me before — jumped more this time than he did the other time. I kept looking over at him like, “But you know what’s coming.”... He would look at me like, “I know,” and then he’d look back at the screen and he’d still jump. There’s a lot of restraint in how the film sticks to its time period, feeling very much in mood and style

like a 1970s film. James said that to me very early on. It was the ‘70s without hitting people over the head — with bell bottoms or an episode of “Partridge Family” or something. Yeah, it’s in the ‘70s and you’ve got ‘70s clothes, and you’ve got the odd “groovy” that the kids say — which they would. I think it gives people a little frame of reference, but it’s not blatant. Everybody showed the same kind of restraint with the ‘70s [details], which I think is important because that stuff can take you out of it.

It’s refreshing to see an older style of making movies is still as scary. No disrespect to horror movies from the past 15 years, but when people say, “What are the great horror movies?” you’re always drawn to “The Exorcist” — that movie always comes up as one of maybe three or four that are arguably the best. Those are movies that are rich in character and not overly graphic. The violence is used appropriately; the blood is used appropriately. And I think James has a real

affinity for that, which I always admired, especially coming from “Saw.” He almost started this whole movement, I feel like, with the shock and the gore and everything. But one of the things that struck me about [our previous collaboration] “Insidious” was the complete opposite of that. And now he’s just really hit his stride. He knows what he needs to tell the story and knows how to scare people.

Music. Calling all angels (and mermaids) — Train hit Jones Beach tonight. When we spoke to Pat Monahan, the lead singer of Train, he was in Chicago, getting ready to depart for New York — by tour bus, unfortunately, not train. The group is touring in support of its sixth studio album, “California 37,” but tonight marks their very first headlining show at Jones Beach. We hitched a ride on Monahan’s train of thought. There must be nothing like playing Jones Beach in the summer. This is one of the highlights of our career. The whole Long Island area — my friend Theresa Caputo, who is the Long Island Medium, those are, like, my people. Those are the people I feel most con-

nected with. Wait, the Long Island Medium is your friend? Yeah. My daughter was [one day] like, “I gotta watch my show, Dad, I gotta hang up.” I was like, “You’re too young to have a show.” She told me what it was, and I found it on YouTube and cried for about four hours watching it. ... [Caputo] came to see us in Central Park last summer, and we’ve become friends since then. We hear fans have been dressing the part for your “Mermaids of Alcatraz” tour. People are just having a lot of fun with it. I remember reading a tweet like two months ago and this guy was like, “You’re telling your fans to dress up as mermaids? Dude, you’ve really sold out.” And my response was, “Dude, we sold out 15 years ago.” [Laughs] Because it’s just like, who cares? If you don’t want to have fun with us then don’t come.

Wine guys

Drops of Jupiter (and pinot noir) You guys also have a wine label. Being from San Francisco, we thought, “How can we bring San Francisco to people that don’t get to go there?” We thought, “Let’s start by bringing some of the best [wine] San Francisco has to offer, and then let’s give the money to an awesome place.” We chose a really cool charity in San Francisco called Family House. I think the favorite right now is called Soul Sister — that’s our pinot. You recently said that this is the happiest you’ve been on tour. Yeah, it is. Last summer, I was struggling with losing my voice, and my father had just passed away prior to the tour, and I hadn’t really had a break in many years, so I started the tour kinda depressed. ... A few months ago, a chiropractor read my chart. ... He said at our age, our adrenal gland is basically depleted, and our adrenal gland is what handles stress. So, here I am, I lost my dad, and that was like the straw that broke the whole back, I guess. I didn’t know where to put my stress so it all started to go to my vocal chords. So he put me on a supplement to help kick-start my adrenal gland, and gave me an adjustment, and I have not had vocal problems since. That’s part of the joy — I don’t have to come out and worry if I can sing.

Tea time around the world Cheerio! Celebrate the new royal baby with this quintessentially British tradition. Has the hoopla around Kate and Will’s new addition put you in a British mood? Add one of the country’s traditions into your next voyage. Spots around the world offer tea time, that most British of traditions, whether you are in Europe or New Orleans. Check out our picks: The Langham (www. langhamhotels.com) boasts the honor of founding the tradition of tea service more than 140 years ago. You can catch the ritual in its original space in London, or visit the hotels in Boston, Pasadena or Chicago, which just opened July 10. Called Tiffin at the Langham, the daily tea overseas features French pastries, soup du jour and

champagne. Across the pond, Tiffin offers tea sandwiches, fruit tarts and teas that include the hotel’s signature blends. A tea sommelier is always present to suggest pairings. If you’re planning a trip to New Orleans, consider a stop at NOLA’s Windsor Court Hotel (www.windsorcourthotel.com), which serves afternoon tea inside Le Salon. Choose among 26 loose-leaf options to sip with sandwiches and enjoy music from a harpist or string trio. The traditional tea time starts off with a glass of sherry, chardonnay or other sparkling beverage and includes the diner’s selection of a personal pot of tea, with scones and miniature cakes to join the tiny sandwiches. A variety of themes include Princess Tea for children and the Alice-inspired Wonderland Afternoon Tea. At the Mandarin Oriental in Barcelona (www. mandarinoriental.com/ barcelona), enjoy Tiffany’s Afternoon Tea at Blanc Res-

taurant. The hotel paired with Tiffany & Co. to create a setting they promise will deliver a “dreamy” afternoon. Cupcakes, cookies and fruit tarts adorn the restaurant’s central table, and tea or bubbly cava is available as an accompaniment. A pianist performs during the service. Rome Cavalieri (www. romecavalieri.com), a Waldorf Astoria Hotel in the Italian capital, serves Tea with Tiepolo at the Tiepolo Lounge and Terrace, underneath a painting of mythological scenes created in 1725 that used to adorn walls in Venice. Along with classic English traditions like choosing a tea, you can also delve a bit into Asian tradition by opting for a blend from the Hunan province in China or a Japanese green tea. The hotel infuses Italian cuisine into the service, too.

TV. Andrew Zimmern says you don’t have to look too far for a succulently strange meal.

It takes more than a unique dish to pique Andrew Zimmern’s interest. And for a fourth season, the “Bizarre Foods America host finds himself roaming between California and New York (with a detour to our northern neighbor). Why, having traveled all over the world, eating everything from “bleeding rocks in Chile to eggplant custard in Greece, is he keeping it local? “To me, it’s all about great stories; great stories that we were overlooking, he explains. “The beauty of America is that it’s a country of immigrants. I think there are more stories here from the fringe and

foods from other cultures than anywhere else in the world. I don’t know whether I eat to travel or travel to eat, but to me they’re not two strands of spaghetti in a dish; they are the same noodle. Now that we’re all hungry, where does Zimmern recommend you call ahead before packing your bags this summer?

Providence, R.I.: “There are chefs who are doggedly committed to the ingredients coming out of the farms and the oceans. It’s a brilliant city to be eating through right now. One to try: Farmstead’s award-winning burger, with polenta fries (www.farmsteadinc.com)

Good eats

How to choose a bizarre food Getting in is only the beginning. Wherever you ďŹ nd yourself at a table in the world, what’s the golden rule of choosing the right thing? “If I go to a sushi bar, I don’t order the yakitori [grilled chicken]. I go to eat the food that’s expert in those places,â€?

Zimmern says. Look for restaurants that change their menus with the season, with ingredients harvested at their peak freshness. Or, you can always put your decision in the hands of the people who know the menu best. “I like to talk to the people in the restaurants: ‘What’s the restaurant loving to cook right now?’

NYC camp offers passport Camp. A three-week program oers specialized classes in ďŹ lm, fashion, music and theater. Typically, thoughts of summer camp conjure memories of tents and hiking. However, the camp experience has evolved in many ways. One example of its evolution is the 92nd Street Y’s Passport NYC camp program: Instead of spending days in the woods, teenagers from 9th through 12th grades participate in a residential camp. Students stay in 92nd Street Y housing and select from different specialties

each other, but they’re really competing to learn and build their own skills, without cameras following, of course! Are there community service opportunities for the campers? One of the big things about the program that the website doesn’t really talk about is the opportunity to earn community service credit by participating in activities that give back. Anything from working with seniors to getting their hands dirty in

Questions to ask before picking a camp

“It’s different from school, because they’re learning in a way that is informal, but it’s something that they’re passionate about. It’s also the perfect opportunity for them to come together with like-minded teens from all over the world who have those same interests.” Hott

How safe is the camp for students who may not be used to city life? Safety is the number one factor in this program, both physically and emotionally. The basis of what we do has everything to do with making the teens and their parents comfortable. So, when they travel throughout New York, they’re taking trains and buses and are real New Yorkers, but they

always travel in a group [with staff members]. … They’re not traveling like children or holding hands or anything like that, but they are told before they even leave, where they’re going, what train they’re taking. Essentially we’re teaching them how to get places while also making them responsible for one another. So, it’s like a buddy system, but in a more teen-related way.

urban farms, there are just so many opportunities for them to explore.

PARENTING P

Most parents have a final checklist before dropping off children at camp. But weeks before that day arrives, child protection experts say parents should be checking off a list of questions to ask. Dr. Mary Pulido, executive director of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, gave us these suggestions: • Does the camp have American Camp Association accreditation? The ACA evaluates the camp’s safety, health, program and camp operations. • How are staff screened? It’s good to know the background and experience of the counselors caring for your child. • What trainings do staffers receive? Camp staff should be trained in safety regulations, emergency procedures, child abuse

identification and reporting, appropriate behavior and boundaries between campers and staff as well as handling behavioral problems. • How does the camp screen visitors? Parents should make sure that there is a method for making sure that unauthorized visitors are not allowed access to their child. • How does the camp handle emergencies? Parents should ask about past emergencies, including injuries and deaths, and the plan that the camp follows should one occur. This includes situa-

tions such as a lost child, a child hurt during an activity, a child becoming ill with food poisoning or having a severe allergic reaction. Calling young readers! Long live morality in the US! Re: ‘Morals gone the way of the dodo bird’ (Metro, July 22) Letter writer Mary Salley is out of her mind to compare George Zimmerman to the Boston Bomber. Mary says, “OMG, morals must be extinct,” because Zimmerman was acquitted and Rolling Stone decided to portray a criminal in a positive light. The two stories are related only in the fact that they both happened in America. If that is your way to judge morality in your country, then obviously you began with believing America is immoral and just searched for

stories that may help your argument. Well it doesn’t work Mary, because Zimmerman was acquitted by a jury of six women. Nothing is immoral about defending yourself. And for every stupid publication head shot cover there are hundreds of good ones like Metro Philly’s magnificent cover shot of new Eagles coach Chip Kelly as a gambler who will soon place his “chips” on a starting quarterback for this season. OMG, immorality is extinct in America, morality is back. Thank you Metro. KEVIN METZ, VIA EMAIL

Smith inks deal with Jets NFL. The team’s first-round pick will be in camp on time when it opens later this week. The Jets locked up their quarterback of the future Monday — that is, if he can beat out the guy crowned with the same title just four years ago. Second-round pick Geno Smith inked a fouryear, $5 million deal with the Jets Monday morning. And while the deal was hardly unexpected, it is the first completed by Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports. Smith fell in the 2013 NFL Draft after being projected by many analysts as a top-10 pick and the first quarterback off the board. Instead, he dropped to the second round, at No. 39 overall, and was the second signal caller selected behind E.J. Manuel (No. 16 overall to Buffalo). He fired his agent

the week after the draft, though he said it had nothing to do with his precipitous drop in the draft. He signed with Roc Nation Sports and was represented in the contract signing by agent Kim Miale. According to sources,

the Jets were not looking to draft Smith with either their No. 9 pick or No. 13 pick. But when Smith fell in their lap in the second round, they pulled the trigger. The team used their two first-round picks on Alabama corner Dee Mil-

Former Colts receiver Austin Collie and former Cowboys receiver Laurent Robinson were both given a look ahead of this week’s opening of training camp. Collie caught 54 passes in 2011 and had

15 touchdowns from 2009-10, but only played in one game last season with a knee injury. Robinson was cut by the Jaguars last season after catching 11 touchdowns the year before in Dallas. METRO

liner and Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson. Both remain unsigned as training camp opens this week. General manager John Idzik said last month during minicamp the team “would anticipate having everybody there ready for

training camp.” Smith is expected to be in a battle with incumbent Mark Sanchez for the starting position as the regular season opens.

The Devils found some much-needed offense in the form of veteran Jaromir Jagr. ESPN reports New Jersey has agreed to a one-year deal with the 41-year-old forward. Jagr played with the Stars and Bruins last season and was a surprise spark for Boston in their Stanley Cup Final run. He didn’t score any postseason goals, but had 10 assists in 22 games. He had 16 goals and 19 assists in 45 games between the Stars and Bruins. The right wing will provide at least some offense to replace the production lost by Ilya Kovalchuk, who announced his sudden retirement from the NHL two weeks ago. He left $77 million on the table by moving on from the Devils.

MLB. Ryan Braun suspended for rest of season over PED use The first shoe has dropped in the Biogenesis scandal and it was a big one. Brewers All-Star outfielder Ryan Braun has been suspended for the rest of the 2013 season by MLB. He will not contest the suspension, according to a release by the league. “As I have acknowledged in the past, I am not perfect, Braun said in a statement. “I realize now that I have made some mistakes. I am willing to accept the consequences

of those actions. Braun previously appealed a suspension by MLB for failing a test for performance-enhancing drugs after his 2011 MVP season, and had it overturned due to how his sample was handled. Now the question remains, when will Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez be punished? Rodriguez was also tied to the Miami clinic that supplied drugs to athletes, including Braun. MARK OSBORNE

Broncos’ Miller faces suspension

Former Knick Robinson signs with Denver

The Giants might have gotten a big break to start their season. ESPN reports Broncos All-Pro Von Miller faces a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Miller tweeted he “did nothing wrong, but a suspension would be a huge loss. He had 18 1/2 sacks last season. The Broncos play the Giants in Week 2.

Knicks GM Glen Grunwald strongly hinted the team was not interested in re-signing former guard Nate Robinson last week. Yesterday, any chance was eliminated as Robinson signed with the Nuggets, according to the Denver Post. Robinson averaged 13.1 points per game last season — the most since he was with the Knicks in 2008-09. METRO
