Messages emerge. New lewd online conversations and texts purported to be from mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner to another woman came out yesterday. Staying power. Weiner and his wife, Huma, addressed the topic at a press conference. Some truth. He admitted he sexted after he resigned from Congress but will stay in the mayoral race. PAGE 02

Weiner: You are a walking fantasy. Woman: I don’t want to just be a fantasy. I want to take care of your every need.

Weiner: Me too. Staring at pics of u. Pathetic? Woman: Not pathetic at all. So flattering. I think about you all the time. I can’t help myself.

Weiner’s ‘Danger’ zone

Weiner: So you wont tell me what picture of me you like the most or turned you on the most? Only tv?

Weiner: What are you wearing? Much for me to take off? I’d hold u by your throat.

Woman: Specifically your health care rants were a huge turn on

Woman: I’m wearing a skirt and no panties. Easy access for you

Weiner: I like to whisper in your ear while I make love to you. That ok? Woman: More than okay. Just the idea of it turns me on so much. I want to connect with you on every level

Weiner: Taking a shower. Wanna join me? Woman: That sounds perfect

Weiner: I was reading your tweets and looking at your pics. So I thought id hold your wrists to settle you down. Woman: …you have no idea how turned on I am right now. I really want you to manhandle me

Alongside his wife, mayoral hopeful Anthony Weiner admitted Tuesday he engaged in lewd conversations with strangers online even after his resignation from Congress in 2011. “Some of them happened after my resignation,” Weiner said in response to report that he had engaged in such conversations as recently as

last fall. Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, also spoke, saying his resignation was just the beginning of a time in their marriage “that was very difficult.” “Our marriage, like many others, has had its ups and its downs,” Abedin said. The couple spoke after nightlife website The Dirty posted screenshots of several lewd conversations allegedly between Weiner and an anonymous woman who claims to have continued their relationship until at least November 2012. In his statement, Weiner said, “Some things that have been posted today

John Catsimatidis, Republican candidate and head of Gristedes Foods, called for Weiner to drop out “so we can end this soap opera.” Public Advocate Bill de Blasio said mayoral candidates should address issues New Yorkers care about, such as education, jobs and affordable housing.

Watchdog. Mayor Bloomberg vetoes police oversight bills

The bills would provide extra oversight for the NYPD. / GETTY IMAGES

Paving the way for an override fight, Mayor Michael Bloomberg yesterday vetoed City Council legislation that would create an outside watchdog for the police department and expand categories protected against racial profiling by the NYPD. In the expected vetoes of the Community Safety

Act’s measures, Bloomberg called the two bills “dangerous and irresponsible,” adding they would “make New Yorkers less safe.” Despite Bloomberg and NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly’s efforts, Council is expected to override the mayoral veto later this summer. ANNA SANDERS

Police are investigating the death of a 4-month-old baby boy that was found in a Queens day care center Monday afternoon. The baby was found dead in a bassinet around 3:30 p.m. at the Q-Kids Day Care Center in Cambria Heights, police said. The medical examiner will determine the cause of the death, but a police spokesman said there weren’t any signs of trauma. Cops said that the investigation is ongoing. LAURA SHIN Hamilton Heights

Firefighters injured in 5-alarm fire A five-alarm fire tore through a Hamilton Heights apartment building Monday evening, leaving at least one civilian and 19 firefighters injured, the FDNY said. The fire erupted at 520 W. 139th St. about 3:45 p.m. and ripped through the top floor and cockloft of the seven-story building, according to the FDNY. Officials confirmed on Tuesday morning that an overloaded electrical outlet was the cause of the fire, The New York Post reports. The injured firefighters were all treated for smoke inhalation, and the civilian was treated at the scene for minor injuries, according to the Post. Approximately 200 firefighters had reported to the scene to help battle the blaze, according to the FDNY. Red Cross workers were helping displaced residents find shelter on Monday night. LAURA SHIN

Crisden is afraid of how the cuts will impact gay youth. / BESS ADLER

Budget cuts threaten HIV prevention Sequester. The programs help the hardest hit New Yorkers. As new diagnoses of HIV decline in every other demographic, the rate of infection among men of color has remained steady for years, according to statistics collected by the New York City Department of Health. Now, two prevention programs targeting young gay men of color are on the brink of elimination due to budget cuts. Dominique Crisden works with such an organization at Gay Men’s Health Crisis called Club 1319. Club 1319 offers a safe space for the city’s gay youth between the ages of 13 and 19. When the kids

turn 19, GMHC has another program for them: Outstanding Beautiful Brothers. But OBB is only funded through July and Club 1319 through September. GMHC is hosting a mayoral forum on July 23, with the hope that public pressure can push the candidates to come up with new funding streams.

SWISS DECLARE WAR ON US Watchmakers are FURIOUS and luxury brands are LIVID, but WHO CARES? We made this $99 Swiss watch for YOU!

H

ow dare Stauer break the unwritten rule in Switzerland? Chaos erupted at this year’s Basel watch fair. The watchmaking elite attacked me in French, German and Italian (with the occa‐ sional British accent), outraged that Stauer would engineer a luxury Swiss‐made timepiece for under $100. They said it couldn’t be done, but we did it anyway. Now you get to wear the spectacular Swiss‐Made Stauer Bienne for ONLY $99! Join the luxury revolution. The crown princes of watchmaking worried that their exorbitant yacht vacations in Monaco would be in jeopardy. For years they convinced the world that Swiss luxury should cost THOUSANDS. But in reality, those thousands went to Swiss bank accounts, six‐ igure supermodels and ski chalets and NOT into the engineering of the watches. Shame on them. It’s time for a change. You deserve it. You CAN own an exquisitely engineered Swiss timepiece for under $100. The only thing that matters is the machine, so we went to the factory in Bienne and met with Francois, a fourth gener‐ ation watchbuilder who makes masterpieces that sell for $5,000 and more. Working together we smashed the once unbreakable $100 barrier. The shockwaves have turned the luxury watch world upside‐down. That’s why the Swiss declared war on us. We consider it a compliment.

5 new york Wednesday, July 24, 2013

The industry cursed me but the buyers were thrilled. It was like the walls came down and watch lovers were set free. The cabal was broken. Now everyone can experience the cachet of a genuine Swiss timepiece. Next I’ll begin work on the 20‐room mansion for $30,000 and an Italian sports car for $3,300. How about a private jet for $12,000? If we can break the Swiss price by this much, who knows what’s next? Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. Wear the Stauer Bienne for 30 days. If you don’t fall in love with it, send it back for a full refund of your purchase price. But I’m convinced that once you put it on, this watch will stay on your wrist... at least until we unveil our next masterpiece. Call now to take advantage of this fantastic offer.

Quinn proposes new express ferry service City Council Speaker and mayoral candidate Christine Quinn announced plans on Tuesday to create an express ferry service from Staten Island to Midtown if elected. The 20-minute express ferry, which would run from the St. George Terminal and Manhattan’s Pier 79 on the West Side, would reduce commutes by a half hour, Quinn’s campaign said. “By making smart investments in infrastructure and service like this express ferry, we can cut travel times in half — or more,” Quinn said.

The proposal is part of Quinn’s plans to end commutes longer than an hour. The express ferry plan would also include a shuttle to the heart of Midtown and access to a Citi Bike station. Other mayoral candidates have also supported better ferry service. Former City Comptroller Bill Thompson has backed legislation for more frequent ferry service. Former Congressman Anthony Weiner has proposed launching ferries in all five boroughs. Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and former MTA chairman Joseph Lhota have also expressed interest in expanding ferry service in the city. ANNA SANDERS

DOMA. Estate tax refunds available for same-sex spouses New York will give estate tax refunds to qualifying same-sex spouses, after the Supreme Court found the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional last month, Governor Andrew Cuomo said. Same-sex spouses previously had to pay expensive estate taxes when their partner died because their marriages were not recognized. “The Supreme Court’s decision to strike down DOMA was a groundbreaking civil rights victory that brought the LGBT community closer to the true meaning of equal rights under the law,” Governor

Cuomo said. New Yorker Edie Windsor, who brought the DOMA case to the Supreme Court, is happy about the state’s news. “I am, of course, thrilled that I will be getting a refund of the estate tax that I never should have had to pay,” Windsor said. “What makes me even happier is the fact that no other gay person will ever again have to face the indignity of DOMA.” Those impacted by the change can call the New York State Taxpayer Information Center at 518457-5387. Police seek clues in ‘Baby Hope’ homicide

Groundbreaking

“The Supreme Court’s decision to strike down DOMA was a groundbreaking civil rights victory that brought the LGBT community closer to the true meaning of equal rights under the law.” Andrew Cuomo

NEW YORK

GI Bill Approved Accredited Member, ACICS

Police are reopening a 22-year-old cold case, involving a little girl who was murdered. The unidentified girl, given the name “Baby Hope,” was about 3 to 5 years old. She was found in a wooded area at Henry Hudson Parkway and Dyckman Street on the morning of July 23, 1991, in a blue-and-white cooler. Cops say that the body could have been placed there between July 13 and July 22. Reports said that she had been sexually abused. The case ignited a media frenzy in New York City when it took place.

The police’s NYPD Crime Stoppers van was in the area from 10 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. yesterday on Broadway and Dyckman Street to pass out posters and other information about the case. The police are offering a $12,000 reward for help solving the Washington Heights crime. Anyone with information about the “Baby Hope” case is urged to call 1-800-577-TIPS or visit www.nypdcrime stoppers.com.

Kate said they were both feeling “very emotional.” Prince William and his wife, Kate, gave the world its first glimpse of their new baby yesterday when they left the hospital with the boy who is third in line to the British throne. To huge cheers from well-wishers and hospital staff, the beaming couple waved and took turns holding their son, wrapped tightly in a white blanket with only the top of his head visible. “He’s got her looks, thankfully,” William told reporters, adding that he could not be happier. Kate, wearing a pale blue dress with white polka dots, said they were

Verizon Wireless unveils three new Droid smartphones Exclusive. The deal with Motorola could be a blow for phone manufacturers like HTC and Samsung. Verizon Wireless, the biggest U.S. mobile service provider, yesterday announced three new phones under its Droid smartphone brand from Google Inc.’s Motorola. The phones — the Droid Mini, Droid Ultra and Droid Maxx — will go on sale for $99, $199 and $299, respectively, for customers who sign a twoyear contract and will be available in Verizon stores Aug. 20, according to Verizon Wireless. The lowest price phone,

the Mini, is a compact device with a 4.3-inch display screen. Motorola boasts that its mid-priced phone in the range, the Ultra, is the skinniest smartphone that can run on high-speed long-term evolution, or LTE, networks. It claimed that its Maxx phone has the best battery life of any LTE phone on the market. It can be used for as long as 48 hours without being charged, compared with a previous version of the device that boasted 32 hours of battery life. The exclusivity agreement with Motorola could be a blow for phone makers, including HTC Corp., which has devices that have also carried the Droid brand in the past, and Korea’s Samsung Electronics. Preliminary. Study suggests “menthol cigarettes pose a health risk above non-menthol.” Shares of U.S. tobacco companies fell yesterday after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it is considering tightening regulations on menthol cigarettes following a scientific review that showed the products are likely to be more addictive than regular cigarettes. The report found that while menthol cigarettes

are no more or less toxic than regular cigarettes, menthol’s cooling and anesthetic properties can reduce the harshness of smoke, increasing their appeal to new smokers. Still, at least some tobacco company analysts see the tone of the report as positive for the industry in so far as it did not recommend an outright ban. “We believe it’s unlikely that menthol will be banned,” said Bonnie Herzog, an analyst at Wells Fargo Securities, in a research report. “We see this as a buying opportunity as we expect the stock to recover as investors digest this report,” she said, referring to

Nick Cannon has become Hollywood’s jack-of-alltrades, cashing in his teenage success on Nickelodeon to become a respected TV host, feature film actor, comedian, musician and producer. Among one of his most recent roles: becoming a father of twins to Monroe and Moroccan who are affectionately known as DemBabies. “I’m the disciplinarian in the family,” Cannon told Metro on Monday. The “America’s Got Talent” host knows there are certain expectations that come with having famous parents, and when your wife is Mariah Carey, even the little things get magnified. “I’m not looking forward to watching my children be ‘the next big things,’” he says. “I’d rather them be college

His MTV show, “Wild N’ Out” made its return this month and he’s set to produce and host the reincarnation of “Soul Train,” of which he has fond memories. “A Nick Cannon Snapple Fact would be that at 15 years old I was a ‘Soul Train’ dancer,” he recalls. “That was the first time I was ever on national television. I used to sneak into Paramount studios and stand outside and wait to be chosen.” — With reporting by Chris Longo

Originality can be overrated. When a film — or a song, or a book, or anything — comes along that’s genuinely unusual, there’s a tendency to dwell on the uniqueness without burrowing deeper into the work. Let’s get this out of the way: “Computer Chess, the fourth film from mumblecore pioneer Andrew Bujalski, is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. A first viewing can be spent marveling and mouthing “wow over how legitimately and unspeakably weird it is. Set at a titular event at a tiny, nowhere hotel in either the late ’70s or early ’80s, it was shot with a Sony AVC-3260, a video camera designed in the ’60s. The black-and-white,

Wiley Wiggins and Patrick Riester play games in “Computer Chess. KINO LORBER INC.

combined with the tacky clothing, oversized glasses and toxic geekiness, give it the air of outsider art. It starts out looking like fakefound footage, but only gets richer and stranger. Cats inexplicably roam the hallways, characters turn odd and there’s even a leftfield, never-explained color sequence. It’s a gas, but a second viewing reveals a certain depth. This isn’t a mere stunt, although the camera work and editing — wreaking of de-centered frames and clumsy cuts, a rarely not-hilarious simulation of amateur filmmaking — give it a vague midnight movie feel. The concern here, voiced by many in the unforced (but notmumblecore-y) dialogue, is the fear of machines taking over man. The characters feel this is imminent. We,

viewers from 25 to 30 years in the future, know this to not be true. Or do we? Even in the bygone world of “Computer Chess, there’s a lack of communication. We never get to know much about any character. The most prominent (Patrick Riester), almost never speaks and never smiles. He’s less shy than robotic. The patrons of the computer chess competition rarely speak unless they’re inebriated via booze or drugs. Even those taking part in a concurrent conference — some kind of hippie/lovein psychology deal — only communicate superficially. This said, “Computer Chess isn’t a thesis film. It more accurately embodies a certain anxiety — a fear of the future from the fairly distant past that throws our own fears into sharper relief. It conveys this without sledgehammer tactics, in a style that’s its own thing. Bujalski has always thought outside the box. “Funny Ha Ha, his 2002 debut, brought back no-budget 16mm studies of young adults when everyone was going digital. With “Computer Chess, he creates his own type of film. It’s original — but luckily, much more.

Do you find it weird or insulting that Hollywood always acts so surprised when a female-focused comedy does well?

Things have changed at such a rapid pace that who knows how people are learning anything or where they’re getting their information.

For Aubrey Plaza, discussing her new film, “The To-Do List,” offers far too many opportunities for oversharing. The ’90sset film follows Brandy (Plaza), a type-A brainiac determined to start college sexually experienced by way of a detailed — if unromantic — list of activities to check off. And Plaza is having trouble keeping her own list to herself. Considering the sexual frankness of the film, how awkward have the interviews gotten? People keep trying to trick me into telling them about my first sexual experiences, and then I almost am like, “Well, when I was — wait a minute! I don’t need to tell you that. That’s for my own brain to remember.” For some reason this movie kind of makes you think that it makes sense to ask about it. But no, nothing’s been awkward, except for me because I’m always awkward in interviews.

List” would work in a contemporary setting? I think there could be a story about a girl going through her firsts, because I think that’s just a universal thing that happens, but I don’t think this story could be told in 2013 for many different reasons. This

movie was set in a time when people didn’t Google everything and people weren’t figuring things out online, which I think is the case nowadays. Who knows what teenagers are doing these days? I don’t know. I mean, I’m 29 and I feel totally out of touch.

It’s great to see a movie taking the awkward teenage sexual experience, which is usually told |as a guy’s story, and showing the girl’s side. I know. That’s one of the reasons that I wanted to do the movie, because I’d never really read anything that truthfully explored that time in a girl’s life — just a really frank portrayal of a girl figuring out how to do really simple things. Well, I don’t know if they’re simple. They’re just really basic sexual acts. I don’t know, everything I say sounds wrong. [Laughs] Just make me sound better and smarter. Olivier Sarkozy’s East Village love nest listed for $7M

GETTY IMAGES, COMSTOCK IMAGES

Demand for rentals increases Residential real estate. East Village one-bedrooms were the most popular apartments last week.

The East Village was the most in-demand neighborhood for tenants looking for a rental apartment in Manhattan in the last week, according to data from apartment listings website Zumper. Rounding out the top five neighborhoods getting the most heat were, in order, the Upper West Side, Gramercy, the Upper East Side and Nolita, the data show. The East Village topped the West Village, which held the top spot the prior week but is nowhere to be seen this time.

Nolita, meanwhile, made its debut on the list. In terms of unit types, one-bedrooms were the most popular, comprising 44 percent of renter inquiries to brokers. The median inquiry was for monthly rent of $2,345, the data show. Two-bedrooms, the previous week’s most wanted, trailed with 23 percent of the leads and a median inquiry of $3,182 a month. Studios and threebedrooms saw 19 and 12 percent of leads, with median inquiries of $1,775 and $3,425 a month, respectively. Two percent of the leads were for fourbedrooms and above. Create a gallery wall in your home Decor. Framing expert Chrissy Droessler tells us how to turn our drab wall into a showpiece for our memories and art.

Start with an anchor piece and then build out. FRAMED & MATTED

Tired of looking at your plain white walls? Display some art already. “Wall galleries are a great way for people who aren’t necessarily ‘artsy’ to add an artistic feel to their rooms,” says Chrissy Droessler, co-founder of the online custom framing company Framed & Matted. “The best part is that there’s no right or wrong way. Figure out your layout before hanging “One of the biggest mistakes that people make while creating wall galleries is hanging individual pieces up before they actually have an idea of the layout,” says Droessler. She suggests laying the frames out on the floor first to organize your gallery. Doing so gives you a clearer picture of the outcome. “Also, if your goal is an eclectic gallery wall, you want to have frames in various sizes,” she says. “If you want a clean, crisp look, then the frames should be hung in line, either as a column, as a grid wall or as a few rows.”

“The best part [about galleries] is that there’s no right or wrong way. Just do what you feel.” Droessler

Start with an anchor piece “When building a gallery wall with different-size frames, it’s helpful have the largest work as the ‘anchor’ so the other works can be added around this piece,” says Droessler. “As you add frames, keep the frame wall balanced. By doing this you can naturally build out the wall over time and it will always look like one unit.” Droessler adds, “It’s impor-

tant to hang the anchor off center, otherwise you run the risk of your eye only focusing on the large center frame, when what you want is the whole group of frames to be the focus. So by putting it off center and hanging the other frames around the anchor, the gallery wall looks like a cohesive unit.”

Keep the center of your gallery at eye-level “Hang art at eye-level, with the center of the artwork at 60 inches off the floor,” says Droessler. This way the frames are at a comfortable place for people to view. “Hang the work too high, and people have to crane their necks, making it less fun to look at.”

Hanging up

Choose the right frames Keep it simple, advises Droessler. “The focus should be on the artwork and not the frame. Simple white or black frames look great with photographs or modern art. But really any frame that is simple and enhances the artwork is a good choice. If you want to add a splash of color, she suggests using a colorful mat. “To get the right mat, choose a color that is in the art, she says. “If you do not want to commit to a large bright mat, a good option is to get a double mat, with a white top mat and a colorful bottom mat. With the mat, the same frame principal applies — the mat should enhance the art, not draw the focus away from the art.

Dos and don’ts •

Do a gallery that isn’t too static and can always evolve and change. Don’t start hanging

frames before your vision of the gallery is clear. •

Do consider the color scheme of your framing in correlation with the room layout or style.

•

Don’t freak out! Gallery walls can be intimidating, because they look so cool, but don’t allow yourself to get overwhelmed. Take it one frame at a time.

A nearly 15,000-square-foot retail space with 100 feet of frontage on Madison Avenue and 74th Street has hit the market with asking rents of up to $1,200 a foot. The space at 935 Madison Ave. will occupy the ground-floor and lower level of a new condominium project spearheaded by health care entrepreneur and real estate investor Daniel E. Straus. The condominium is a conversion of six historic brownstones and two townhouses formerly owned by the Whitney Museum and is situated adjacent to the main Whitney building, which is set to be taken over by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2015. (The Whitney is relocating to a site in the Meatpacking District.) Joel Isaacs and Joshua Lewin of Isaacs & Company are marketing the retail space, which will have an historic façade and ceiling heights of 18 feet on the ground floor. The property will be available for possession in July 2014, Isaacs projected. Straus is hoping that the arrival of the Met in two years’ time will increase foot traffic and drive uberluxury retailers to consider spaces, such as his, which are north of 72nd Street on Madison Avenue. Traditionally, the blocks north of 72nd Street have appealed to contemporary brands geared toward younger buyers, like Intermix, Coach and J.Crew, while the most exclusive luxury labels like Ralph Lauren and Dolce & Gabbana have clustered slightly south. “We’ve seen Madison Avenue rents increase dramatically in the last 12

months,” Isaacs said. “We don’t see much of a distinction between 70th Street and 74th Street these days.” Isaacs said the developer is asking $1,000 a foot for the ground-floor, mid-block space and up to $1,200 a foot for the corner space. Some industry experts, such as Alan Victor, an executive vice president at Lansco, deemed the asking rents “aggressive.” “The question is whether [the location] bears the same traffic that the 60s provide,” Victor said. Demand for such locations is typically from designers searching for stores with small footprints, of as little as 1,000 square feet, said Eric Le Goff, a retail broker with Cushman & Wakefield who recently completed a retail deal on Madison in the upper 70s for $1,000 a foot. While the location is desirable for its proximity to high-end hotels, Le Goff said he was unconvinced that the arrival of the Met would boost foot traffic significantly enough to seriously impact rents. KATHERINE CLARKE

Pricing

Moving on up Retailers who might have traditionally gone for prime Madison locations may become more willing to look north as rents continue to grow “exponentially” in the most soughtafter locations, said Faith Hope Consolo of Douglas Elliman’s retail arm, who said she thought $1,000-a-foot rents were reasonable for 74th Street.

New York City recently launched Citi Bike, encouraging citizens who wouldn’t normally get on — or purchase — a bike to bypass public transportation or, even worse, cars. It’s a great idea, and we support it — in theory. In practice, urban bicycling is terrifying. It’s best to be equipped and knowledgeable. And of the many urban cycling apps, the most useful appears to be Ride the City. The app is seeping into the nation’s cities, including NYC and Philadelphia and aggregates multiple biking apps into one.

There’s not just a map and route function — which is great, considering Google Maps for iPhone inexplicably lacks a bike route aspect — it also features weather and a bike shop

locator. So, the next time you suddenly find you’ve run over a screw or another pointy object some jerk left in the street, you can find help. It’s bare bones, but it gets the job done.

We’re used to seeing brilliant and unkempt mathematicians scribbling away with dense, impenetrable numbers that fill up massive chalkboards. Digital technology has rendered everything cold. An app like MyScript Calculator tries to bring back a bit of humanity. Instead of typing math problems into a faux-calucator, this program allows you use your finger to draw numbers, which are then digitized. It even solves your problems for you — because computers have to do something.

iPhone 5’s 4 inches. Rumors claiming a larger iPad and iPhone are in the works have been around seemingly forever, but there’s no clear indication that Apple will actually produce these devices. Steve Jobs famously shunned form factors different from those of the original iPad and iPhone, but later on Apple did introduce a larger iPhone — the iPhone 5 — as well as the iPad mini, so nothing is set in stone.

Apple is testing a 13inch iPad as well as an iPhone with a larger screen, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing officials at Apple’s Asian suppliers. The company is looking into producing an iPad with a screen measuring “slightly less than 13 inches, as well as iPhones of unspecified size, but with a screen larger than THE IPAD MAY BE GETTING A BIT BIGGER. / MASHABLE

Get the Wolverine body Fitness. This Friday, Hugh Jackman reprises his role as Logan in “The Wolverine.” His trainer tells us how Jackman turned into a superhero in under a year.

Hugh, jacked Hugh Jackman and his personal trainer, David Kingsbury, started getting ready for “The Wolverine” halfway through working on “Les Miserables,” for which Jackman’s character, Jean Valjean, had to go from scrawny to robust. “In the first section of ‘Les Miz,’ Hugh had to be thin. But for the second section, he had to bulk up,” Kingsbury tells Metro. “That was quite early on,

Weights + cardio Becoming Wolverine required Jackman to train for a total of 11 hours a week. Monday to Friday,

strength on basic lifts like the bench press, squat and deadlift. The point is to increase the weights by about 5 percent every four weeks, adjusting the reps at the same time. “We’d always train in the morning, so Hugh would drink a double espresso just before for a boost in energy, and have breakfast straight after he was done with the exercises. We worked both the upper and lower body, doing different movements each day. We focused more on increasing the size of his legs, to make sure he maintained balance,” he says. They combined weights with a mixture of interval training and steady-state cardio, such as fast-paced walking. “It would either be low or high intensity — nothing in-between — as the middle-ground stuff is the worst

for maintaining muscle.”

The diet Jackman’s workouts were so intense that he had to eat around 5,000 calories. His diet included lots of protein (eggs, fish, chicken), vegetables (spinach, broccoli), carbs (oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potatoes) and fats (avocado, nuts, peanut butter, olives) but excluded all sugar, including fruit and alcohol. “He ate protein every day, but to maximize results, we’d cycle his carbohydrates. On weight training days, his first three meals would be carb-heavy and the last three would include lots of healthy fats. On nonweight training days, he would just have healthy fats,” says Kingsbury.

Women’s height linked to cancer risk Location of study: U.S. Study subjects: 144,701 postmenopausal women Results: The taller a woman is, the higher her risk of breast, colon, endometrial, kidney, ovary, rectum and thyroid cancers, according to a study conducted by the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York, N.Y. Also, height was a factor in an increase in multiple myeloma and melanoma. The researchers found the risk of developing any cancer increased 13 percent for every 3.94 inch increase in height. Significance: “In this data set, more cancers are associated with height than were associated with body mass index,” says the department’s senior epidemiologist Geoffrey Kabat, Ph.D. Ultimately, cancer is a result of processes having to do with growth, so it makes sense that hormones or other growth factors that influence height may also influence cancer risk.

Some Vitamin B12 products contain a useless “pseudo” form Location of study: U.S. Study subjects: Lab study Results: Some previously accepted sources of vitamin B12,

such as spirulina, which is often sold as a dietary supplement, and some shellfish purported to be rich in the vitamin, contain a form of B12 that the body can’t absorb, according to a study published in the American Chemical Society’s Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. If the body can’t absorb it, then the vitamin is useless. Significance: Low levels of vitamin B12 are linked to health problems such as pernicious anemia, which can be fatal, and elevated blood levels of homocysteine, which may increase the chances of developing heart disease, stroke and other diseases. In order to prevent vitamin B12 deficiency among susceptible groups — such as vegetarians, vegans and the elderly — the researchers recommended eating certain fermented foods, and foods artificially fortified with B12, such as cereals.

Smokers who seem healthy may have early cell damage Location of study: U.S.

Study subjects: 21 healthy nonsmokers and 31 smokers with no lung disease symptoms Results: Just because a doctor gives a smoker a clean bill of health, that doesn’t mean damage is not being done to their lungs, say researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College. Their study, published in the journal Stem Cell, found that even smokers who seem healthy have damaged airway cells, with characteristics similar to cells found in aggressive lung cancer. The study compared cells that line the airway of so-called healthy nonsmokers with those from smokers with no detectable lung disease. Significance: Early into a smoker’s decision to start, “cells are already starting to lose control and become disordered,” says the study’s senior investigator, Dr. Ronald G. Crystal, chairman and professor of genetic medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. “The smoker thinks they are normal, and their doctor’s exam is normal, but we know at the biologic level that all cigarette smokers’ lungs are abnormal to some degree.” LINDA CLARKE

Bullied out of the office

Let trial unite us

Re: ‘How to handle an office bully’ (Metro, July 22) Your article brought back bad memories of how unfairly and illegally I was treated in ALL of my past office jobs. It was horrible! Being a single female and a new employee at an entry-level position was all it took. I was targeted at every job from both men and women. It got to the point where I would inform/complain to Human Resources to handle the situation, but because I was new and at a low-paying position, it was overlooked and the mistreatment would continue. Speaking up to the person didn’t work for me. I was young and wasn’t taken seriously.

Re: ‘Long live morality in the US!’ (Metro, July 23) The positions of both liberals and conservatives were rigidly locked in place. I don’t think Mr. Zimmerman set out that day to kill a young man. But I also think that he was caught up in the attitudes and fears underlying the “stand your ground” law. The trial and its fallout showed that we’re all racist in a way, whether we watch FOX or MSNBC. Justice should bring everyone together on the issues and move beyond sound bites. Pirates (58-39)

Reds (56-43)

Tigers (54-44)

The Red Sox hold on to the top spot after taking two of three from the Yankees over the weekend, including a dramatic walk-off win on Sunday Night Baseball. Their pitching has been outstanding of late, as Red Sox starters have allowed two runs or less in 12 of their last 17 games. They began a pivotal home series with Tampa Bay on Monday night with a loss though.

Despite losing two of three in Cincinnati this past weekend, the Pirates still find themselves in second place in the NL Central.

The Reds took two of three over the Pirates at home, but their issues have been on the road, where they are 23-26 this season.

The Tigers have kept their slim lead in the AL Central, one of the least competitive divisions in baseball, despite being just 10 games over .500.

Solid pitching has been the biggest surprise for Oakland this season, as the A’s lead the AL in team ERA at 3.62.

Even though the Braves are leading the NL East, they certainly are not playing as well as they would like.

Playing consistent ball for the first time since the beginning of the year, the Indians are in a tight race for the AL Central.

St. Louis has won seven of its last 10 and has built a 1 1/2-game lead over the Pirates for first place in the NL Central.

The Rays are the hottest team in baseball. They have won 17 of their last 19 games and are closing in on the Red Sox.

Baltimore has quietly won five games in a row, but still remains 2 1/2 games back and in third place in the tight AL East.

Texas is in a bit of a funk, having lost seven of 11 games. The Rangers will look to get back on track against the Yankees.

Losing two of three to the Giants over the weekend didn’t help their cause, as they scored six runs in three games.

MLB. Rodriguez still waiting, reportedly looking to cut deal In the wake of Ryan Braun’s suspension, the attention almost immediately shifted, at least in New York, to the other big name tied up in the same Biogenesis scandal: Alex Rodriguez. So far, MLB has been silent on when — it’s almost certainly shifted beyond if — Rodriguez will be suspended. But ESPN reports Rodriguez is trying to make a deal with MLB in regards to a suspension. Rodriguez is currently in Tampa, rehabbing from a Grade 1 quad strain suffered this

weekend while trying to come back from hip surgery in January, but his teammates were faced with questions Monday night after Braun was suspended. “I can’t say anything because I don’t know what happened with Alex,” Mariano Rivera told reporters after the team’s 3-0 loss in Texas Monday night. “I have to support him. He’s my teammate. He’s my brother. I’m not saying he did or didn’t do it, but if it happens I can’t throw him in the street.”

Pedroia inks seven-year extension Dustin Pedroia will be in Boston through 2021. But that’s not necessarily bad news for the Yankees. Pedroia, who was due to be a free agent after next season, signed a seven-year, $100 million contract extension with

the Red Sox yesterday. The deal could set the market for his fellow AL second baseman Robinson Cano. Cano is a free agent at the end of this season and had been looking for a deal of $200 million. His numbers are better than Pedroia’s, but the Boston second baseman’s deal means Cano likely won’t touch that figure. METRO
