Documentary. “First Comes Love” follows a Brooklyn mother who decides to have a child later in life. In a city where women often bemoan the uneven ratio of women to men — 400,000 more women, according to city data — stories like Nina Davenport’s are becoming more commonplace. Davenport, a Brooklyn-based single mother who decided to have a child on her own at the age of 41, even scoffed at a reviewer who referred

to her, in the context of a documentary she made about her experience, as “a demographic of one.” “It’s so absurd,” she said. “I know tons of people who have done this and it’s not even necessarily from seeking them out [because of the film].” As a career documentary filmmaker, making a movie of her experience was natural. Now, she hopes it will help other women if they have a child on their own. The film, she said, is about “female empowerment, like a woman feeling that ‘I don’t need a man to do this, I don’t need a man psychologically, I don’t need the
validation from society, I don’t have to do the same thing my parents did.’” Being a New Yorker made her more comfortable with the experience. “There’s everything here and there’s so much tolerance and openness,” she said. Davenport says, there is no such thing as a “typical” family in New York City: There are singleparent families, divorced families and children raised with two mothers or two fathers or even grandparents. “I value that more than anything,” she said.

A bride-to-be and her fiance’s best man were found dead over the weekend after a 19-foot speedboat slammed into a construction barge near the Tappan Zee Bridge. A body matching that of Lindsey Stewart, 30, was found on Saturday, two weeks before she was to be married. A second
body confirmed to be her fiance’s best man, Mark Lennon, 30, was found Sunday, according to the Associated Press. The groom-to be, Brian Bond, 36, was one of four passengers rescued after the crash. Cops believe the person driving the boat was intoxicated. ANNA SANDERS
Police are searching for two suspects who got in a deadly argument with a teenager in Brooklyn Saturday. Kamau Chandler, 17, was found with a gunshot wound to the head and the chest just after 4 a.m. on Fulton Street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. Chandler, of Coney Island, was taken to Interfaith hospital where he was pronounced dead. Cops said Chandler and his friends were walking down Fulton Street when they were approached by two suspects. The group began to argue and one of the suspects, believed to be a black male, pulled out a gun and shot Chandler. The first suspect, who is thin with short hair, was wearing an orange shirt with a strip on it. Cops ask anyone with information to call NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS ANNA SANDERS

In an effort to combat gun violence, both the council and police have each contributed $150,000 to fund the programs, wherein New

Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of knee pain and stiffness. The cartilage is the cushioning between the two bones that makes up the knee joint. When the cartilage begins to wear down you have less support and lubrication that protects the two bones in the knee from rubbing together. A doctor may describe arthritis as mild, moderate or severe. The most severe is often described as ‘bone on bone’. Unfortunately, more often than not patients are told their knee is ‘bone on bone’. Software experts attack cars, will release coding Car hacking is not a new field, but its secrets have long been closely guarded. That is about to change, thanks to two well-known computer software hackers who got bored finding bugs in software from Microsoft and Apple. Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek say they will publish detailed blueprints of techniques for attacking critical systems in the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape in a 100-page white paper following several months of research they conducted with a grant from the U.S. government. The two “white hats” — hackers who try to uncover software vulnerabilities before criminals can exploit them — will also release the software they built for hacking the cars at the Def Con hacking convention in Las Vegas this week. They said they devised ways to force a Toyota Prius to brake suddenly at 80 miles an hour, jerk its steering wheel or accelerate the engine. They also say they can disable the brakes of a Ford Escape traveling at very slow speeds, so that the car keeps moving no matter how hard the driver presses the pedal. But it is not as scary as it may sound at first blush.
Toyota Motor Corp. spokesman John Hanson said the company was reviewing the work. He said the carmaker had invested heavily in electronic security, but that bugs remained. / GETTY IMAGES Quoted
“This particular attack was not performed remotely over the air, but as a highly aggressive direct physical manipulation of one vehicle over an elongated period of time, which would not be a risk to customers and any mass level.” Craig Daitch, Ford Motor Co. spokesman
They were sitting inside the cars using laptops connected directly to the vehicles’ computer networks when they did their work. So they will not be providing information on how to hack remotely into a car network, which
is what would typically be needed to launch a realworld attack. The two say they hope the data they publish will encourage other whitehat hackers to uncover more security flaws in autos so they can be fixed. REUTERS

Rio’s famed Copacabana beach, usually the venue for scantily-clad sun-seekers and revelry, became a massive Catholic campground yesterday as Pope Francis concluded a youth festival by urging young people to go forth and build a new world. Aerial television footage showed the sand and pavements blanketed with people for several miles along the shoreline. “I was totally tranquil, waking up among the people on the beach. This view made it a very special and unique experience,” said Aline Vonsovicz, a 23-yearold Brazilian. The throng of people, many in the green and yel-
low Brazilian colors, gave Francis the kind of ecstatic welcome that he has received all through his trip to his home continent. They shouted and sang as he was driven through the crowd in an open-sided pope mobile, stopping often to kiss babies offered to him by their mothers on the shoreline most famous for its bars, nightclubs and hedonist spirit. His message to the young people in Rio for week-long World Youth Day festivities, sometimes called “the Church’s Woodstock,” was serious: They should not make their time in Rio a one-off experience. Freed Pussy Riot member calls for boycott of Russia Cultural. The singer, jailed for anti-Putin song but freed on appeal, speaks about her cohorts. After two members of Russian punk protest group Pussy Riot were denied parole last week, a third member who was also convicted but freed on appeal spoke to Metro. Here’s what Yekaterina Samutsevich had to say in a Skype interview from Moscow about the group’s Song

fate, jail time and the human rights situation in Russia. Last October you had your sentence suspended and freed on appeal. Are you free to go where you want and do what you want? Not really. I am not allowed to leave Moscow without permission from a supervisor. And I can’t leave Russia for two years. My biggest limitation is that I will be sent to prison if I break the law at any point. I can speak freely and meet people, however. When was the last time you spoke with Nadja [Tolokonnikova] and Maria [Alyokhina]? A long time ago. After the trial, I tried to call them in prison. I used false names. But quite soon they recognized my voice. I got a call in which I was
told that this carry-on was not allowed and that they knew it was me. We still try to communicate, but carefully. But letters sometimes take months to arrive. I haven’t been in contact with Maria and Nadja for a while now. Russia is an important trading partner in the world. Is an embargo a good way to protest against the fall of human rights in Russia? Are you calling for this? Everyone understands that less trade with Russia has consequences. An embargo is indeed an option, economical and cultural. Yes, in the fight for freedom of expression in Russia, I hereby call for an economical and cultural embargo on Russia.

Pussy Riot video game released A video game that allows players to kill members of the feminist punk rock group Pussy Riot has been released online. The game ‘Don’t Let Pussy Riot into the Cathedral’ was first unveiled at a recent Orthodox festival held in Moscow. Players control an Orthodox cross to zap cartoon images of band members, clad with colorful balaclavas and brandishing guitars, before they can enter a church. If too many members enter, the church building collapses and the game is over. Then, to register your score on the table, you are asked to enter your name to pay an “indulgence” in order “to absolve all of your sins to the servant of God [St. Peter.]”

Rewriting through the trauma Real education. Professor Laura Gray-Rosendale talks about taking her time with the delicate subject matter of her memoir. Northern Arizona University professor Laura Gray-Rosendale has been working on “College Girl” for more than 20 years — writing, scrapping, rediscovering and rewriting the manuscript in an almost ceaseless process. She says she refused to settle for an
inauthentic memoir or, worse, a solipsistic telling of her life’s deepest trauma: the rape she suffered at college when she was 20 years old. “I didn’t want the book to be about self-pity in any way, shape or form. So I knew I had to write the ‘oh poor me’ stuff first to get it out of the way,” says Gray-Rosendale. “There are places for that in one’s life, but in order to get at the real experiences, those self-pitying lenses have to be removed.” And, as Gray-Rosendale cut and reformed the pages, she happened upon a nonlinear way of telling the story that dovetailed with the experience of

trauma: “I needed to portray what it’s like to be in a place in your mind and body where time changes. This happens for all sorts of trauma survivors: Time shifts, the way you look at space shifts, the way you perceive everything around you changes.” Today, Gray-Rosendale is an English professor at Northern Arizona University. She has written a number of textbooks and classroom aids, but certainly nothing as personal as “College Girl.” At first she was reluctant to share the book with her students, but so far the feedback has been well worth it. “They were able to tell me, ‘I could feel what you were feeling. I have experienced those feelings,’” she says. “In the end, I was so glad that some of them read it, because it gave me confidence that the book really does speak to people who are 20 years old right now.”

Escape to an island in New York City Explore. Need to get out of the city? Take a ferry, tram or train to one of these three islands. Sometimes you need to get away, but not for long. Those days are perfect for one of the islands dotting Manhattan’s borders, many of which are jampacked with summer activities. If you haven’t made it out to one, it’s not too late! From an African festival to electric music, here are some events to check out before summer slips away.
Governors Island Get on wheels when the Skate Truck NYC stops by Governors Island in New York Harbor, providing roller-skating equipment.
Take a ferry to the Jazz Age Lawn Party at Governors Island. / THE TRUST FOR GOVERNORS ISLAND
The mobile truck rents out roller skates and inline skates around the city in spots like Central Park. The company also provides skate lessons, so channel your inner middle schooler at a birthday party and strap on the skates to take a spin on the paths around the island. Aug. 11, 24, 25 and 31; Sept. 1 and 2 One of the buzziest
events of summer, the Jazz Age Lawn Party, has its second weekend extravaganza in August. The ferry over to Governors Island is filled with people sporting flapper dresses and 1920s accessories, and on the island’s lawn, live jazz and dance performances are surrounded by games and gourmet food for all ages. Aug. 17 and 18 Celebrate the African continent at the African Film Festival in August, which hosts films about the region’s vibrant culture. Before or after a film, stop by a dance class from superb instructors hailing from Brazil, Senegal and Guinea. The event also includes drumming, free storytelling and quilting demonstrations. You can also snack on African cuisine. Aug. 4

Park during the Labor Day weekend. Randall’s Island, if you haven’t yet been, is along the East River between Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx, and it also hosted the Governors Ball music festival earlier this summer. Huge crowds attend this electronic dance music festival, which features performances ranging from the duo Above & Beyond to Connecticut native Audien. Aug. 30 through Sept. 1
Roosevelt Island If you haven’t yet taken the tram to Roosevelt Island, it’s time to stop by this sliver of land in the East River. Stop by on the tram, or the F train, for the last few films in their outdoor Summer Movie Series, featuring “Rocky Aug. 10 and “Inception Aug. 24.

Everyone says they love him Interviews. The cast of “Blue Jasmine talks about Woody Allen’s unusual directing methods. When she was being courted to play the fallen Manhattan socialite lead in Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine, Cate Blanchett talked to the filmmaking legend for, by her calculations, three minutes. Then she read the script. Then they talked for 45 more seconds. The third time they spoke was when shooting started. With Peter Sarsgaard, who plays a minor role in
the film, Allen was even more concise. They talked for 45 seconds. Then they saw each other on set. Louis C.K. auditioned for one role: a tough guy for which he was, to say the least, not appropriate. (“I just wanted to meet [Allen], C.K. admits. “I thought he wouldn’t pick me. But I’d get to meet him — before he dies.) He was instead offered another, smaller role. The news came not from Allen himself, but from an envelope delivered to his house. Inside were his three scenes — and no others. He had 40 minutes to read them before they were sent back. None of this is surprising. Allen is infamous for his oddly ultra-secretive production methods. He

“The Wolverine,” starring Hugh Jackman as Marvel Comics’ sharp-clawed superhero, slashed its way to $55 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales to claim the box office crown in a summer that hasn’t been kind to some other big-budget action films. “The Conjuring,” the low-budget horror film that led last weekend’s box office, slipped to second place, with $22.1 million in domestic sales from Friday through Sunday, per studio estimates. The film has generated nearly $84 million in overall ticket sales, a surprisingly strong showing for a film that cost just under $20 million to make. The animated film “Despicable Me 2,” featuring the voice of comic actor Steve Carell, finished third with $16 million in ticket sales in its fourth week in movie theaters. WHEN ONLINE BATTLES BECOME OFFLINE STRESSES I was “defriended” by an acquaintance after I made what I thought was a pretty funny comment on one of his political Facebook posts. Am I the only one who finds Facebook stressful?
Not at all. As a psychotherapist in private practice, I can’t help but notice that Facebook is wreaking mischief in some of my clients’ personal lives. Social media offers the online universe a whole new arsenal to offend, snub, flirt with, spy on and make public declarations about those we “like” and those we don’t. Given the growing ranks of users, it’s not surprising that Facebook is making its way onto the therapy couch. According to psychologists at Edinburgh Napier University, Facebook stresses people out. In a study of 200 students, researchers observed a

correlation between stress levels and the number of Facebook “friends.” Apparently, the more friends a person has, the more one worries about missing important social information, offending contacts, rejecting user requests, deleting unwanted contacts, being entertaining or using appropriate etiquette for different types of friends. Additionally, Facebook can engender lifestyle envy. Lest the messenger be confused with the message, one might argue that Facebook isn’t necessarily creating drama, just reflecting subtle relationship dynamics that lurk beneath the surface. Social media is, after all, a modern form of storytelling. Where else can I follow the daily chronicles of my childhood friends and long-lost relatives? But by pronouncing precisely who likes and doesn’t like who and who is doing
what, Facebook tells us what we might otherwise never know and perhaps wish we could ignore. My advice: Think about the consequences before you comment on other people’s posts. If you get into a tiff, you can always apologize online or offline. You can also take a break or stop visiting the site altogether. After all, social media is not the same thing as face-to-face interactions, which are ultimately more rewarding. — This column is not intended to be used as a substitute for a private consultation with a mental health professional, nor is this therapist to be held liable for any actions taken as a result of this column. MIND, BODY, SPIRIT AND THE MARATHON When I run, I usually find myself thinking about a lot of things. The mind generally hates running, so it wanders aimlessly like tourist in front of you as you try to get to work on time (just kidding, tourists, we love you … as long as you stay to the right while riding on escalators). Thoughts can range from “Oh, look, a pretty butterfly” to “I’m going to die alone and that’s really going to suck.” But the thought that comes to my mind the most is “Why am I running?” This particular thought is a dangerous one, and can get me into trouble. It usually comes in the first mile or two, or at 6 a.m. before a long training run. Why? Why does anyone run? Do we really need to? It’s not like I’m running from anything (like a bear, for instance) or running to anything (to get a fire

It seems that things like fire, or angry bears, or the dreaded fire-breathing bear, make sense for a person to start running — but to run just to run, at times, seems just plain stupid. It’s at these moments I almost stop, which is dangerous, because running overall seems to be about momentum. To stop is to stop, and that can
start to kill one’s spirit. After the body and mind cease to cooperate, the spirit is the only thing left that seems to push runners to finish their run, whether it be a 5K, a marathon or to safety from a fire-breathing bear. When it comes to the physical aspect of getting
ready for a marathon, nothing can test the body like a marathon training program. I recently started The Run S.M.A.R.T. Project training program through the New York Flyers, a local running club I just joined. Right now, I run about 32 miles a week, and that will gradually increase

until race day. The physical side effects from such training, so far, have ranged from walking across my living room like an 85-year-old with rickets, to screaming in the morning like a 6-year-old girl from the pain of intense calf cramps (my neighbors keep waiting to meet my daughter, who apparently suffers from occasional early morning nightmares — let them believe what they want). As noted by many marathon veterans, a major key to training for a marathon is actually making it to the marathon. I’m starting to see what they mean. This is tough on everything that makes us human: mind, body and spirit. The good news is my spirit seems healthy. In fact, it seems to be getting stronger. That, perhaps, is the main thing that will get me to Nov. 3.

WOMEN DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES
ASHLEY MILNE-TYTE Ashley Milne-Tyte is a radio producer and reporter based in New York City. She hosts a bi-monthly podcast called “The Broad Experience about women in the workplace.
Female entrepreneurship has always lagged behind men’s — for decades, women couldn’t even open a bank account without a husband or male relative co-signing — but women are making up for lost time. Between 1997 and 2013, the number of women-owned businesses leapt by 59 percent. Today, according to American Express Open’s annual report on female entrepreneurs, there are 8.6 million women-owned businesses in the U.S., and almost a third of firms are owned by women. Entrepreneurship for women is also undergoing a demographic shift: Back in 1997, 17 percent of firms were owned by women of color. Today, that number is 31 percent. Julie Weeks of Womenable, a consultancy, says all this reflects women’s growing educational accomplishments, experience in the workplace and confidence. Still, entrepreneurship is far from an easy road.

Horoscope
Leo | July 23-Aug. 22. In a friendly competitive game, don’t make winning so important that it spoils the fun.
Scorpio | Oct. 23-Nov. 21. Be alert for uncertainties in your affairs. Conditions could have a disturbing influence on your dealings.
Virgo | Aug. 23-Sept. 22. It’s fine to do things that make you look good, but only if your actions don’t come at the expense of another. Be extra careful to avoid falling into this pattern unthinkingly.
Sagittarius | Nov. 22-Dec. 21. This might not turn out to be such a nifty day if you and your mate, partner or friend cannot agree upon a social outing. Toss a coin.
Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22. Usually you go out of your way to be an extremely diplomatic person, but this wonderful quality might desert you today.
Capricorn | Dec. 22-Jan 20. Be wary of falling into patterns that are self-defeating or more complicated than they need to be. Work on figuring out effective shortcuts.
Aquarius | Jan. 21-Feb 18. A well-intentioned pal isn’t likely to be the one you should go to for some constructive advice. Talk to someone with a valuable distance from the matter. Pisces | Feb. 19-March 20. A major achievement won’t be denied you, if you have the fortitude and/or tenacity to attain it. Aries | March 21-April 20. If you find yourself in a position where you must make a decision that would affect friends who hold opposing positions, try to be as impartial as possible.
Taurus | April 21-May 21. In order for a joint endeavor to work out, you need to make sure there is parity between the players. Gemini | May 22-June 20. Be careful not to veto a partner’s wishes without careful consideration. You’d be asking for a real blowup. Cancer | June 21-July 22. Don’t expect a co-worker to take care of an onerous chore for you without offering to do the same for him or her down the line, fully intending to stand by your word. BERNICE BEDE OSOL

Weiner not held in high regard What I wish for in a politician is his ability to think with his brains along with his heart, and not his crotch. If his wife wishes to forgive him, that is her adult decision. However, no one has observed that this man has not considered the impact on the future life of his young son regarding his father’s selfish, egotistical actions. That to me is the most despicable part of this man’s narcissistic lifestyle. PAT DASKO, VIA EMAIL
I call myself “liberal up to a point,” and Bill Clinton, John Edwards, Eliot Spitzer and now
Anthony Weiner have passed it. These are not mistakes like losing your keys; they are deliberate, self-initiated and repeated acts of doing something bad and getting away with it. They call into question his judgement, character, honesty, integrity, openness, personal philosophy and ability and willingness to learn from misdeeds, all of which, in a mayor or any public servant, should be absolutely unquestionable. Soriano walks off Yanks with win, but Jeter steals the show MLB. Derek Jeter returned to Yankee Stadium in style. Derek Jeter did not want to be the savior, but it’s fair to say yesterday he was the igniting force for an offense that had gone two weeks without a home run. All it took was one pitch, as Jeter drove one the opposite way over the right-center field fence in the first inning of Sunday’s 6-5 win decided on Alfonso Soriano’s ninthinning single. “I just wanted to get a pitch to hit,” Jeter said. “Fortunately, it was a fastball away.” “He’s a movie,” manag-

You think about his 3,000th hit, how he did that, and think about what he did today.” “I played with him 2001 to 2003 and nothing’s changed,” Soriano said of Jeter’s dramatic return. Jeter’s memorable home run was the first by a right-handed hitter since June 25, a span of 28 games. “We hadn’t hit a home run since the All-Star break; we hadn’t had a right-handed home run in a month,” Girardi said. “For him to come out and do that — that’s his first at-bat — he’s a movie.”

Ryan deals with questions about power structure NFL. John Idzik indicated it won’t be all Rex Ryan’s call on who starts at QB. All decisions are “Jets decisions, so says head coach Rex Ryan in defending how the team handles its personnel. General manager John Idzik seemed to undermine the head coach he inherited on Saturday, saying decisions such as the outcome of the quarterback competition between Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith would be done by committee.
