Big odds. In one of the most heated elections in years, these underdogs hope to stand out. With more than 20 people vying for a shot at Gracie Mansion, the race for mayor has a few superstars — and a lot of underdogs. Having years of experience (or even a scandal or two) under their belts, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, ex-MTA chairman Joe Lhota and former congressman Anthony Weiner dominate the headlines, leaving many of the other candidates to scramble for name recognition and votes come election day. But after 12 years of Mayor Michael Bloomberg running New York City, the next candidate will also have the chance to leave a lasting legacy and a big imprint on the city and its future — if they can just break through the noise. Metro spoke with a handful of these long-shot candidates about how they set themselves apart from the pack.

For now, Jimmy McMillan is comfortable out of the spotlight. “They’ll fight each other like cats and dogs and I’m sitting on the sidelines eating popcorn,” said the 66-yearold founder of the Rent Is Too Damn High Party. Though McMillan is a registered Republican, he’s running on the party that made him an Internet sensation

Big surprise

“[You’re] going to be surprised how it’s going to turn out.” Jimmy McMillan

“because, the rent is still too damn high.” Everything — unemployment, high crime — can be attributed to increasing rent, McMillan said. If elected, he would immediately halt all evictions. “New York City has a right to make sure rent is stabilized for the people,” he said. McMillan has unsuccessfully run for president, governor and mayor several times in the last 20 years.

The techie

Jack Hidary Tech entrepreneur Jack Hidary says he would be the “jobs mayor.” “I’m talking about taking some of the economic growth that you see in downtown Manhattan and taking it to all five boroughs,” said Hidary, 45, who officially launched his campaign two weeks ago. Hidary grew up in Brooklyn before cofounding Dice.com, a tech job search site. He also formed a nonprofit

to encourage hybrid taxicab use in the city. If elected, Hidary said more companies like Google would come to the city. Hidary is a registered Independent, but petitioning for his own Jobs and Education party. Confident of his chances, Hidary said contenders running on major party lines don’t represent voters anymore. “They want someone who is going to get the job done,” he said.

Citywide candidate

“I am well known in the streets among many people.” Jack Hidary

The professor

Randy Credico Political satirist Randy Credico doesn’t have anything good to say about his opponents. “You have eight dull people and a guy like me,” said Credico, a comedian well known in political circles. Credico is on the Democratic primary ballot, but, anticipating a loss, he’s also going to petition on his own Tax Wall Street party to secure a spot in the general election. “I have to let people know there is someone with a point of view that’s not being con-

trolled by Wall Street,” he said. Credico uses his stand-up experience when speaking to voters, but has a history of fighting for civil rights causes. “I’m speaking on behalf of a constituency who can’t vote,” he said.

A professor in New Jersey and Long Island, Ceceilia Berkowitz said she doesn’t think those that are already holding office, on City Council for instance, are “well qualified” to be the next mayor. “I come from a different background,” said Berkowitz, 35, who acknowledged she’s somewhat of an outsider in city politics. Berkowitz is currently petitioning to run as an Independent, but announced her candidacy over Twitter

in January. She likes to remind people she’s friends with Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “He offers advice when I see him,” Berkowitz said. If elected, Berkowitz said she would make any city initiative be open for public comment and approval.

Erick Salgado The Rev. Erick Salgado considers himself the only candidate in the Democratic primary with a shot at the Latino vote, partially for his conservative views. “Without a doubt, in the Spanish community, I’m the No. 1,” said Salgado, 43, noting many Latino voters are more conservative. Born to Puerto Rican parents in the Bronx, Salgado has founded three churches in Brooklyn, including two in Bensonhurst with over 1,100 members. Salgado, who now lives in Staten Island with his wife and kids, said he would push for community safety and increase the police force by some 2,500 officers if elected. He would also expand outreach to undocumented immigrants. Though he remains confident, Salgado acknowledged he’s fighting a difficult battle against sensationalized headlines and entrenched candidates that have raised much more money. Media circus

The state-level appeals court upheld a ruling on the city’s sugary drinks ban. / GETTY IMAGES

City faces soda ban slap-down Sugary sweetness. Judges uphold the strike-down of the big soda ban. After a state appeals court ruled the city’s plan to ban large sugary drinks is an illegal overreach of executive power on Tuesday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg vowed to not let a “temporary setback” stop the city from continuing its efforts to fight obesity. “We firmly disagree with the court’s reasoning and will seek to appeal to the Court of Appeals as quickly as possible,” city

lawyer Michael Cardozo said. While the city cited “broad precedent” for the Board of Health to enact the ban, the board “failed to act within the bounds of its lawfully delegated authority” when it passed the measure, the First Department of the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division said in a unanimous decision.

First announced by Bloomberg last year, the soda ban would cap the size of sugary beverages sold in restaurants and eateries at 16 ounces. In March, a state court deemed the regulation invalid, calling it “arbitrary and capricious.”

Bay Ridge. Suspect arrested for graffiti at several religious sites Police have a suspect in custody in an investigation into 11 instances of graffiti throughout Bay Ridge, some of which were found on or near places of worship, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said yesterday. But officers didn’t have to do much to find him: The suspect, Cristos Papademtropolos, 55, reportedly turned himself in. Cops said the graffiti was first discovered at 3:18 a.m. Tuesday morning on two statues of Jesus and Mary outside St. Anselm, a Roman Catholic church on 82nd Street. Patrol officers responding to the report from St. Anselm found the word “No” in red paint on the Bay Ridge Jewish Center, cops said. “No” was reportedly also found on the side of the Bay Ridge Prep School and on the United Lu-

A group of business leaders, women’s groups and labor unions have joined forces with a mission: Stop Eliot Spitzer from becoming New York City comptroller. The groups, which have their own reasons for disapproving of Spitzer, have pledged to raise and spend $1.5 million on advertising, direct mail and field work in an effort to convince New Yorkers not to vote for the former governor, The New York Times reported. They will form two super PACs that will be allowed to accept contributions of any size. Veto. Council poised to lose majority vote on anti-profiling bill The City Council may lose a crucial vote for the anti-profiling bill Mayor Michael Bloomberg vetoed last week. Brooklyn Democrat Erik Dilan is being considered for an appointment to the New York City Board of Elections, according to the Daily News. The bill expands the protected categories

to include LGBTQ and immigrant New Yorkers, and Bloomberg has alleged it would make the city less safe for a variety of reasons. The city passed the profiling bill with 34 votes, the minimum number needed to override the mayor’s veto. Losing Dilan could tank the bill.

Sentence. The U.S. government is seeking life behind bars without parole. A military judge yesterday found U.S. soldier Bradley Manning not guilty of aiding the enemy, the most serious charge he faced for handing over documents to WikiLeaks, but he still likely faces a long jail term after being found guilty of 19 other counts. Colonel Denise Lind ruled the 25-year-old Army private first class was guilty of five espionage charges, among many others, for

the largest unauthorized release of classified U.S. data in the nation’s history. The trove of documents, including battlefield videos and diplomatic cables, was a huge boost to the profile of the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy website and its founder Julian Assange. Tuesday’s verdict could be a blow to his efforts to encourage people with access to secret information to release it publicly. Supporters of Manning were heartened by the not guilty ruling on the most serious charge, though WikiLeaks said the conviction represented “a very serious new precedent. REUTERS

US to declassify documents on spy programs U.S. spy agencies plan to declassify documents about the National Security Agency surveillance programs revealed by former contractor Edward Snowden, and also material related to a secret intelligence court, a U.S. intelligence official said. The declassified documents were intended to

provide the public more information about the programs as part of a commitment by Director of National Intelligence James Clapper for more transparency, the official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. The documents would also include information about the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court which operates in secrecy, the official said. The move to declassify was first reported by CNN. Investigation. Afghan accused US troops of murdering civilians The U.S. Army has launched an investigation into claims that its special forces abducted and killed Afghan civilians, allegations Washington has denied, a NATO spokeswoman said yesterday. U.S. Colonel Jane Crichton said the commander of the International Security Assistance Force, the NATO-led force in Afghanistan, U.S. General Joseph Dunford, had ordered

the investigation after an Afghan translator accused the U.S. soldiers, with whom he had worked, of the crimes. Accusations of U.S. troops committing crimes against civilians have damaged relations between the Afghan government and ISAF, particularly since a U.S. soldier was accused of murdering 16 civilians in Kandahar province in March last year. Obama offers ‘grand bargain’ on corporate tax rate for jobs Goal. The president wants to break congressional gridlock by trying to ďŹ nd a formula that satisďŹ es both parties. President Barack Obama proposed a “grand bargain for middle-class jobsâ€? yesterday that would cut the U.S. corporate tax rate and use billions of dollars in revenues generated by a business tax overhaul to fund projects aimed at creating jobs. He spoke at an Amazon.com facility in southeast Tennessee. “I’ve come here to offer a framework that might help break through the political logjam in Washington and get some of these proven ideas moving,â€? Obama said. Obama’s proposal im-

mediately drew fire from the office of Republican John Boehner, speaker of the House of Representatives. Bickering broke out as the White House said it had tried to tell Boehner’s aides about the plan on Monday,

but “never heard back from them, said Obama spokesman Jay Carney. The contretemps reflected the highly partisan environment that has made negotiations nearly impossible in Washington. Efforts to reach a “grand bargain between Democrats and Republicans on deficit reduction have been at an impasse for months. Obama also wants a minimum tax on foreign earnings as a tool against corporate tax evasion and the use of tax havens. In exchange for his support for a corporate tax reduction, Obama wants the money generated by a tax overhaul to be used to fund such projects as repairing roads and bridges, improving education at community colleges and promoting manufacturing, senior administration officials said. The “Fifty Shades of Grey series of erotic novels are the favorite reading material among former CIA captives held at the Guantanamo detention camp, the Huffington Post quoted a U.S. congressman as saying. Survey. Siblings of disabled kids prone to behavioral problems Children who have a sibling with a disability are more prone than other kids to having troubles with relationships, behavior, schoolwork or recreational activities, according to a survey of parents. The study could not explain why the siblings of disabled kids were more likely to have problems functioning socially or emotionally than kids without a special needs brother or sister. But Anthony Goudie, the report’s lead author, said he’s convinced it has to do with the family situation. “That’s driven by Study

Israel and the Palestinians will seek to reach a peace agreement within nine months and negotiators will meet again within two weeks after holding a “positive” first round of talks, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said yesterday. Senior aides to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas held their first talks this week since 2010, but focused largely on the framework for negotiations rather than the substance of their dispute. Speaking after the meetings, which included a session with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden as well

as direct talks between the two sides without U.S. officials present, Kerry said he believed peace was possible despite the obstacles. “I know the path is difficult. In the film “The Time Being,” actor Wes Bentley plays a struggling artist who takes a job for a mysterious benefactor (Frank Langella). One idea raised by the drama is whether artists can even have families. As the father of a 2-year-old son, it’s something Bentley himself has grappled with, but he’s satisfied with his answer. He’s also satisfied the film does a great job of making it look like he can actually paint. The idea your character is confronted with — “artists can’t have families” — is an interesting one. What’s your take? At one point, in my younger days, I certainly would’ve agreed with that. I thought you can’t be a true artist with a family, especially if you’re going to be a good family man. That was in my 20s, before I thought I wanted to have one. Then I met my wife

WES BENTLEY “The Time Being” star says he’d throw away his social life and his art to have a happy family life.

BRINGING ORDER TO THE WILD, WILD WES and fell in love with her. I had a battle with this for a while, but I quickly decided that I’m going to be a family man and if my art struggles so be it.

Parental practice

Do you see playing parents to children older than your son as learning experiences or practice for later? Within the project itself, I learn some parenting.

There’s a saying that you can’t have a marriage, a social life and an artistic career. You have to pick one to fail. That makes sense. I would throw out my social life — mostly because I had one and it was not all it was cracked up to be. [Laughs] I don’t find I get as much satisfaction out of an amazing social life. Having one at all is great, but it’s not at all as satisfying to me. But I get so much satisfaction out of working on my marriage — and it is work. It’s easy to love somebody; it’s hard to work on living with them.

It’s hard on a family more than you might think. Of course, like everything, it’s a great feeling because I so desperately wanted to work and I wanted to do better and better stuff. But I’ve also got a son, so I lament missing some of my time with him because he’s only 2 years old. So bouncing around Sweden and Mexico and all that — all great projects, but I love being with him, so it’s been a bit hard.

You’ve been working a great deal, filming several projects back-to-back.

How about the actual painting in the film? There’s a decent amount

But I’m also hanging out with a child actor all day and trying to have fun, but also get them into the work — trying to influence him. Yeah, it’s a bit of practice. of footage of you going at canvases. I didn’t get to do a whole lot. If it was something I’d been doing for years and years, we could’ve used a bit more of it, though they did a great job of making it look like I did more than I did. It’s the beautiful thing about film. “I’ll take care of the emotional stuff, you guys make me look like a painter.” There were two artists who showed me the basics.

deal with their children for awhile. After the first movie had those blue, CGI buggers slipping into a vortex to retrieve one of their own in present-day New York, Papa Smurf (the late, great Jonathan Winters in his final role, sadly) and a Smurf rescue team mingle among the Earthlings once again. This time, it’s to save Smurfette (Katy Perry, constantly sounding like she downed a whole roll of Sweet Tarts), who’s been

kidnapped by evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) in the hopes of snagging the secret formula for acquiring “Smurf essence. Those who remember the origin story of Smurfette know she was originally a spy created by Gargamel to infiltrate Smurf Village, until Papa Smurf gave her a loving, magical once-over and made her into one of their own. The sequel brings in a few more Gargamel-created, miniature baddies (Chris-

tina Ricci and J.B. Smoove), who help bring Smurfette over to the dark side by showing her how fun it is to tear up pastry shops and ride on storks. From the people behind the scenes to those in front of the lens to the families who’ll most likely flock to theaters to see this, “The Smurfs 2 isn’t a good choice for anybody.

From ‘America’s Got Talent’ to NYC Theater. iLuminate, a finalist in the nation’s biggest talent search, is now live onstage. In iLuminate’s “Artist of Light,” unity is the prominent force. It’s hard not to be inspired by these “America’s Got Talent” 2011 finalists as they work in perfect synchronization. Wearing wireless light suits, the members of iLuminate dance in the dark, creating a spectacular light show, leaving audience members feeling as if they have just entered a live video game that’s entertaining for all ages. From break-dancing cops to fire-breathing creatures, “Artist of Light” tells a story of love overcoming evil. It combines impressive dance moves with precise elec-

This is just a preview of the onstage spectacle you’ll see at “Artist of Light.” / CHARLES SYKES Origin story En route to a professional dance career, Miral Kotb was diagnosed with a rare malignancy. She recovered, but she could never dance at such a high level again. Thanks to a background in technology, Kotb was able to combine worlds to create iLuminate.

And the visual artwork never fails to meticulously match up with each beat of the head-bobbing music. “I wanted the dancers to be featured more,” says Kotb. “I wanted to find a way to really bring the art of dance to pop culture and play around with how you can make dance more interesting and all the illusions it can create.” There’s a limit to how much information can be conveyed when there’s no speaking. But the choreography conveys the essence of the story line and keeps the viewers on the edges of their seats. When the story requires the dancers to use a wand to light up a certain body part, simulate robots splitting apart or all join to form one shockingly giant creature, there is never a

missed beat — allowing each simulation to come to life. “It is vital to the show’s success that everyone is on the same page,” says Kotb. “It is 100 percent teamwork. You’re basically in the dark just hoping and trusting that the person who’s going to lift you is going to be there, because you can’t really see. So it’s a lot of trust.”

National report. US home prices rose, though pace cooled

The S&P/Case Shiller report showed that the housing market is recovering. / IMAGE SOURCE

U.S. home prices rose in May, suggesting the housing market recovery pushed ahead during spring, though the pace of gains cooled in what analysts said could be a sign of things to come. The S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 1 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis, shy of economists’ forecast for a 1.5 percent increase. That marked a slower pace than April’s 1.7 percent rise. On a non-adjusted basis, prices rose 2.4 percent in May. Analysts said a modera-

tion in price gains was to be expected given the acceleration home values have seen. “It’s not surprising — it’s been rising so quickly,” said Celia Chen, senior director of housing economics at Moody’s Analytics in Pennsylvania. The report did not alter economists’ views that the housing recovery is progressing, making it a bright spot for the economy. However, economists did flag the potential for higher mortgage rates to dampen the speed of the rebound down the line. REUTERS

More than 160 residential buildings in New York City have been built — most in the last 10 years— with multi-purpose film-screening rooms. Here are three new ones with eye-catching designs and unique features that set them apart from the rest. Movie buffs, take note. JARED KLEINSTEIN

The Related Group wasn’t content with one screening room when it built MiMA, its behemoth rental/condo building, last year. Outside on The Lawn, guests have 52 seating options, from lounge chairs to couches and ottomans, along with space for blankets on the lawn itself. So you never have to miss a scene when the craving for M&Ms calls, concierge service is offered on weekends. Ever since the “Super Mario” RPG graced the SNES back in the shaggy-haired 1990s, Mario and Luigi have been taking part in their own turn-based battles. “Mario and Luigi: Dream Team” continues this tradition, mixing in more of the ridiculous sense of humor and timed button mashing the series has become known for. The plot involves jumping in and out of Luigi’s dreams to rescue Princess Peach. These dream segments are where the game

The fourth entry in the series evens out the playing field, adding a casual difficulty setting and plenty of amazing new features, like the ability to use the touch-screen to draw a map as you explore. Best makeup primers for late summer If you follow beauty blogs and magazines, you’ve noticed that primers are the new “mustâ€? that makeup artists swear by. A Metro reporter tested ďŹ ve to see which can stand the heat and humidity. ROMINA MCGUINNESS

By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra-Primer

MAC Prep + Prime Skin Primer

The press release says the formula will reduce enlarged pores. But after putting it on, mine still looked like gaping holes. The formula felt heavier than I expected, but it gets high marks for staying power. Twelve hours and a sweaty yoga class later, I still had a full face of makeup on. $59, www.spacenk.com

Everything about this is shimmery — the packaging, tube and cream all contain glitter. So I expected this to give my skin a glow as well. No dice. But I liked that this primer made my skin feel smooth and oil free. However, it took me twice as long to wash my makeup o. $29, www.mac cosmetics. com

Estee Lauder Illuminating Perfecting Primer

Is that a glow I see? This primer brightened up my face and anchored down my BB cream, stopping it from sliding o my face. The texture is thick, but not pore-cloggingly so, and the formula, which includes shea butter, made my skin feel softer than usual. But I could do without the mattifying eect, which was too powdery for my taste. $34, www.estee lauder.com

Stila One Step Correct This formula made my makeup look natural and healthy, leaving a dewy, smooth ďŹ nish. And the colorcorrecting mousse managed to hide the stubborn red patches around my nose. Best of all, it lasted all day, and I forgot I had anything on. $36, www.stila cosmetics. com

BeneďŹ t ‘That Gal’ Brightening Face Primer

I tried this on a bad skin day. I was looking a bit sallow. But after trying it on, my cheeks looked rosy. It also gave my skin a smooth surface, hiding my scars and minimizing the size of my pores. Come bedtime — even after I had washed my face — my skin hadn’t lost its glow. $29, www. beneďŹ t cosmetics. com

The moves to get in shape after baby Fitness. Kim, Kate, are you reading?’

1

Right now, Duchess Kate is recovering from the royal birth, but just like any other new mom, she’ll soon be thinking about getting back into shape. Fitness instructor and mother of three Karen Vizueta developed this workout for her mom-oriented Baby Bounce Back class at New York Sports Clubs. Six weeks post-baby (12 weeks if you’ve had a C-section), give this routine a try.

LINDA CLARKE

letters@metro.us

Do 10-12 reps of each of the exercises outlined below, in this order. Then, repeat the entire workout twice. Vizueta’s class is a mix of cardio for weight loss and strength training to sculpt muscles. “It also helps balance with creating stability in the ankles. [With] all the bending and picking up that a new mom does, the squats will teach the proper way to avoid back pain.”

5

Tricep dip: “This strengthens the upper body using body weight. It’s a must for new moms carrying baby, bags and performing daily activities.”

6

Ring toe-taps: “This is a cardio blast interval to help improve cardiovascular fitness and promote weight loss.”

Single leg deadlift with ring: “This helps strengthen hamstrings and improves balance while working core muscles.”

1

7

2

8

Squat with Pilates ring: “This tones and strengthens quadriceps, glutes and adductors to help new moms restore muscle strength in lower body.”

3

High-knee shuffle: “This is the second cardio blast. Do both for 30 seconds each.”

Mommy’s time Oot: “This strengthens legs and enhances proper posture while engaging the transverse abdominus, the muscle that supports the uterus and helps keep your belly sucked in.”

Tricep extension with leg abduction: “This strengthens and sculpts triceps and outer thighs to target common problem areas that pregnancy often leaves behind.”

9

4

10

SuperMOM: “This targets the entire body in one move to strengthen the back, core, upper and lower body.”

Ab curl with leg scoops: “This strengthens abdominals and promotes pelvic stability.”

Inverted V stretch: “This stretches calf muscles that may be tight and stiff from nine months of pregnancy.”

Determining the specific source of pain is important for recommending an appropriate remedy or treatment, as pain is nature’s way of letting you know that something is wrong. For example, the abdominal pain caused by appendicitis requires a different approach than a painful kidney stone, or abdominal muscle strain. A migraine headache is treated differently than a tension headache, and the chest pain from a heart attack is an emergency whereas heartburn is often relieved with antacids. If you are experiencing pain that is new and different for you without an obvious source (like a sprained ankle or sore throat), you should seek medical attention. Some substances are analgesic, which means they relieve pain directly at the source or decrease the nervous system’s perception of pain. Acetaminophen or Paracetamol (branded as Tylenol) is a mild analgesic that relieves

headaches, muscle aches and post-surgical pain. It also reduces fever, which may cause pain. It takes about 15-30 minutes to kick in and lasts four to six hours. Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) and Naproxen (Aleve) are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These are in contrast to steroids, which also relieve inflammation (think cortisone) but require a prescription. Various inflammatory substances are released by the body to fight infection and repair injured tissues. While inflammation can be helpful, it also causes pain. NSAIDs are useful in relieving painful conditions that are caused by inflammation, such as sore throats, earaches or skin wounds. Injuries such as strains, sprains or wounds may also benefit from an NSAID. The medicine takes effect 20-30 minutes after you take it. Ibuprofen lasts about four to six hours and Naproxen about 10-12. Just don’t mix these two drugs. Aspirin is both analgesic and anti-inflammatory, and it relieves fever. It’s good for fevers, headaches and muscle or joint pain.

Use as directed Taking any of these OTC medicines for short periods of time (7-10 days) is safe, but prolonged or chronic pain should always be investigated by a doctor. And be careful in dosing: Acetaminophen is metabolized by the liver and can cause liver failure if you overdose. NSAIDs and aspirin can irritate the lining of the stomach and cause ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding. If you

have a sensitive stomach, try taking an NSAID or aspirin with some food. Alcohol increases overall bodily inammation so it may make pain worse. Avoid it if you take any OTC pill. As with all medications, if you are allergic, are taking other prescription drugs or have a medical condition that may be affected by over-the-counter medicines, make sure you talk to a doctor if you are unsure about the safety of any of these substances.

Horoscope

Leo | July 23-Aug. 22. Be up front about favors, and you’re more likely to be granted what you ask. Virgo | Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Keep your expectations within reasonable bounds when negotiating a deal with another. Each time something is given, you’ll want to give something equivalent in return. Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22. Disassociate yourself from co-workers in order to achieve an important objective, if you find they can’t emulate your ambition and drive.

Scorpio | Oct. 23-Nov. 21. If you want to do your best in a competition, playing the game must be most important to you.

Aquarius | Jan. 21-Feb 18. Be very careful about your spending habits if you are shopping with someone who isn’t as fortunate.

Taurus | April 21-May 21. Try to relax and enjoy life a bit, but don’t do so at the expense of a big responsibility.

Sagittarius | Nov. 22-Dec. 21. Although there are usually some complications involved, joint ventures look to be promising for you. Maintain parity.

Pisces | Feb. 19-March 20. Don’t put yourself in the position of having to make a choice between spending time with someone you like and with someone you’re obligated to.

Gemini | May 22-June 20. Although you’ll be both industrious and clever, you could easily yield to whims that would diminish your returns.

Capricorn | Dec. 22-Jan 20. Unless you and your mate are in accord on the major and minor poihnts of an important issue, little of value will be achieved. Each must be supportive of the other.

Of vice and men Re: ‘Cheaters can still prosper’ (Metro, July 30) I am responding to Owen Duncan’s reply about Weiner cheating in his wife, and “What does it matter?” While it may be OK for a man to rationalize this awful behavior, Weiner took a vow in marriage. This is much like the vow he takes for office! If he doesn’t take one seriously, why should we think he’ll take any others seriously? His behavior and defiance is not only a sign of very poor character, but one who is unfit for public office. MAURA SHUFELDT, VIA EMAIL

Weiner committed injurious acts against a person that he (presumably) loves for personal

fulfillment and pleasure. How is one to ascertain the manner in which he will regard his duties to the public, people with whom he has had no relation? WILLIAM STOWE, VIA EMAIL

Metro readers seem to be divided on whether or not Mr. Weiner should be allowed to serve as mayor of New York. Certainly he is entitled to run. But we like to think that our political leaders have both good judgement and good taste. He clearly has neither. We want our politicians to be above reproach. In Mr. Weiner’s case, reproach is his middle name. I. MILTON KARABELL, VIA EMAIL

Folk balancing competition, impending birth of his twins NFL. The Jets kicker is at the ready in case his wife goes into labor during training camp.

Jets kicker Nick Folk is not only engaged in a kicking competition with veteran Billy Cundiff, he is also set to welcome two additions to his family with his wife due to give birth at any time. It leaves him physically in upstate New York for training camp, but with his mind 190 miles away in New Jersey. Folk and his wife, Julianne, will welcome twin boys, with the family’s doctor eyeing sometime in the middle of August as the likely due date. For a football player not only in training camp but also fighting for his job, he realizes he has to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice if she should suddenly go into labor. Last week, Folk spoke with head coach Rex Ryan, special teams coach Ben Kotwica and general manager John Idzik to give them an update. “Rex is a big family guy, [and] so is John Idzik from what I’ve heard,” Folk told Metro. “My wife has [Director of Player De-

Folk fine competing to win job With the Jets signing Billy Cundiff last week, there’s a veteran on the 90man roster who has kicked at the NFL level and brings legitimate competition for Nick Folk. “I think that’s been John Idzik’s motto since Day 1: competition. I’ve been expecting that since I re-signed here and they told me they’re going to find the best competition for me,” Folk said. “I feel like I kicked really well in OTAs and minicamp, probably my best one since I’ve been with the Jets.” KRISTIAN DYER velopment] Dave Szott’s number and Laurie Young, Rex’s assistant, so she has plenty of ways to get in contact with people and that’s for when we’re on the field. Other than that, I will have my phone on me, even in meetings. It won’t be on ringer, but if I have to run out to take a call, I can.”

“My wife says they’re kicking a lot. So maybe a kicker and a punter are in there. ... Or maybe two kickers.” Folk, on his soon-to-be-born twins

With his wife coming up this weekend for the Green and White scrimmage, there is a small chance she could give birth while away from their New Jersey home. If that’s the case, the couple plans to have their twins in nearby Syracuse, N.Y., or “if the contractions are hours apart, we could drive back to our hospital in New Jersey where we would like to have the boys.” Folk has circled Detroit on Aug. 9, the Jets’ first preseason game, as a possible “blip” in their plans. It is a stressful time for Folk, balancing his NFL future with his desire to be with Julianne. “She’s great, I love her to death,” Folk said. “I’m happy that she said ‘yes’ when I proposed to her.”

Randle makes breakout bid NFL. The wideout, in his second year, is making a name for himself in Giants training camp. Starting wideouts Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks have been in and out of the Giants’ rotation this week for varying reasons, so it’s been a great opportunity for Rueben Randle to take advantage of the extra reps. The second-year pro has made a name for himself during the early portion of training camp with acrobatic catches and punishing blocks, while also taking advantage of the rapport he’s formed with quarterback Eli Manning. “I think he has a lot more confidence in me to make plays for him,” Randle said. “I think with any quarterback they want to have confidence in you to make plays and that’s coming with me and Eli.”

Rueben Randle had three touchdowns last season, including two against the Eagles in the season finale. / GETTY IMAGES

Cruz missed the entire offseason organized team activities (OTAs) program due to a contract dispute and Nicks was recovering from knee issues and his own unknown OTA hiatus, so Randle used the extra reps as a way to improve his game. Randle acknowledged

By the numbers

Randle had just 298 receiving yards in limited playing time last year, but 101 came in the final two games.

he’s not disillusioned about overtaking either of the two in the starting lineup, but reasoned his current position is beneficial to all. “It’s definitely a gift because as only a secondyear guy in the league I’m learning so much from them,” said Randle.

“They’re always teaching me something, so when I do become a No. 1 receiver, whether it’s on this team or on another one, I’ll just take what they taught me and keep pushing forward and getting better as a player.” The past two days on the practice field might be Randle’s unofficial comingout party as he’s dazzled the crowd and impressed the coaching staff with numerous long touchdown catches. During an 11-on-11 drill against the first-team defense, Randle hauled in a 50-yard, overthe-shoulder touchdown from Manning. “He’s made some outstanding plays,” said head coach Tom Coughlin. “There was one [play] in the team drill in the left corner [where] the jump ball post [route] in the middle of the field was a nice play.”

Yankees, Mets quiet before trade deadline The MLB trade deadline comes today at 4 p.m., but it appears unlikely either the Yankees or Mets will be involved in any big splashes. The Yankees, at five games over .500, are still presumably in the buyers’ market. But if they are looking to add another bat — having already traded for Alfonso Soriano last week — it won’t be Michael Young. Fox Sports reported yesterday Young was not interested in waiving his no-trade clause to head to the Bronx. The Mets have two salable chips in Marlon Byrd and Bobby Parnell, but ESPN reports it’s been all quiet on both fronts. The team is reportedly looking for a big prospect haul if they unload Parnell.
