Boxing pro’s next fight is helping troubled kids Counterpunch. A new boxing program in highcrime areas is aimed a youth seeking a way out. A handful of boxing gyms in New York City are about to get help from a program called Luta de la Paz: “Struggle for Peace,” explains founder Luke Dowdney. These four gyms, located in neighborhoods prone to violence and crime, are already havens for youth seeking alternatives to such activities. Luta is working with the gyms to implement a “life-changing program,” instituting after-school activities, tutoring and mentoring. Frank Galarza, the pointman for the Luta program at Starrett City Boxing Gym in Brooklyn, was even more determined to get the program going after the recent death of a 14-year-old in the Bronx, Shaaliver Douse. Douse was firing at a group of men when he was fatally shot by cops. “We want to reach out and figure out what can we do to help them grow, and do what we can on our part,” Galarza said. Galarza is an ideal mentor for kids who may be slipping into drugs, violence and crime: He was once one of those kids. His father “was involved in

the wrong things,” he said, and died when Galarza was 7 years old of complications from a gunshot wound. His mother died two years later from a drug overdose. In a way, Frank was luckier than most: He had a loving aunt and uncle who took him in and raised him as their own. But that didn’t stop him from ending up “in the streets,” he said: “I became a troubled kid; I became someone who was very angry. As I got older it didn’t get better, it just got worse.” Boxing changed all of that, he said, and he’s hoping he can pass that experience on to young men all over Brooklyn. After his last stint in jail and the death of his older brother in a robbery, Galarza decided to turn his life around. He won his first amateur match at the Golden Gloves and went pro immediately after. He is undefeated. Luta picked the gyms it’s partnering with — in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and New Rochelle — because they are already doing the outreach work Luta advocates. ”We went out and selected these four as the best we came across that already have this mentality,” Dowdney said. “Already they’re saving lives just by being there.”

Quinn wants to raise the school drop-out age Adult decision. Her plan would make the legal drop-out age 18. As part of a plan to increase high school graduation rates, City Council Speaker and mayoral candidate Christine Quinn proposed raising the high school drop-out age to 18. “By raising the minimum age at which a student can drop out to 18, we will ensure only legal adults are making these important life decisions,” Quinn said. The city would need

permission from the state to change its drop-out age from 17. Quinn said the move would send a message to students that the city

expects them to stay in school. Some 9,000 students dropped out of city high schools last year, she said. The average income for dropouts is $8,000 less than high school graduates. “Anything less than 100 percent graduation rate is unacceptable, and we as a city strive to change this and take measures to correct it,” Quinn said. The state’s Department of Education did not immediately respond to request for comment on Quinn’s proposal.

across Iraq in the multiple attacks and that a recent security crackdown called “Avenge the Martyrs had been effective. Eighteen months since the last U.S. troops withdrew, Sunni Islamist militants have been gathering

Three U.S. soldiers were killed in Afghanistan’s eastern borderlands yesterday, U.S. and NATO officials said, marking the first NATO combat deaths this month. The soldiers, from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, were killed by insurgents in Paktia province, a U.S. official told Reuters. Paktia is one of several provinces that border Pakistan and have endured some of the highest levels of fighting during the U.S.-led 12-year war in Afghanistan. Murder trial. Gay couple seeks spousal privilege protection A legal debate over whether one member of a samesex couple has spousal privilege that would shield her from testifying against her partner is at the heart of a capital murder case in politically conservative Kentucky. Geneva Case, 49, does not want to testify in a Louisville court against her partner, Bobbie Jo Clary, 37, who is accused of beating George Murphy, 64, to death with a hammer in 2011 and then stealing his van. Prosecutors say Case must testify because of her value as a witness, since she heard Clary admit to the slaying and also saw blood on the interior of the victim’s van after the killing. Clary says Murphy used a hammer to sexually assault her, and she defended herself by hitting him over the head. Clary is also charged

Fortresses. Morsi’s supporters have set up their camps with sandbags and piles of big rocks. Egyptian police are expected to start taking action early today against supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi who are gathered in crowded protest camps in Cairo, security and government sources said, a move which could trigger more bloodshed. The sites are the main flash points in the confrontation between the army, which toppled Morsi last month, and supporters who demand his reinstateMiddle East

Israel to free first group of prisoners for peace talks An Israeli cabinet panel decided to free 26 Palestinian prisoners over the next few days under a deal that led to a resumption of U.S.brokered peace talks after a three-year hiatus. ment. Western and Arab mediators and some senior Egyptian government officials have been trying to persuade the army to avoid using force against the protesters, who at times can number as much as tens of thousands. “State security troops will be deployed around the sit-ins by dawn as a start of procedures that will eventually lead to a dispersal,” a senior security source said yesterday, adding that the first step will be to surround the camps. Army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who toppled Morsi, has come under pressure from hardline military officers to move against the protesters, security sources say.

Any further bloodshed would almost certainly deepen Egypt’s political crisis and keep the government from dealing with vital issues such as the fragile economy. Another security source said the decision to make a move today, just after celebrations following the holy month of Ramadan, came after a meeting between the interior minister and his aides. REUTERS

Israel expands West Bank settlements despite peace talks Israel moved forward yesterday with plans to build nearly 1,200 homes for Jewish settlers, holding fast to a defiant settlement policy as cabinet ministers approved a deal to release Palestinian prisoners ahead of a new round of peace talks. Same school, different experience Class. College isn’t the same for all races, a study finds. When Russell Lowery-Hart was a professor at West Texas A&M University, his adopted son was attending the same institution. At least as far as appearances go, the father-son relationship was somewhat unusual in West Texas: LoweryHart is white, and his son is black. “He would talk about his experiences, and they were just so different from what I thought they would be,” says Hart, who now works at Amarillo College. “I wanted to explore and understand what it meant to be an African-American student at colleges similar to the one we were at.” Soon, Hart launched a qualitative study to do just that. His team of researchers focused on three major U.S. college campuses —

two public, one private. In total, 87 African-American students participated over a five-year span, taking part in lengthy interviews and discussions. Hart quickly discovered many common themes developing in the experiences the students related to him. The study found that students were regularly frustrated when professors put them on the spot during discussions related to black culture. They often

felt they were expected to speak for the entire black experience. Secondly, during freshman orientation, students reported being pulled from the larger group to receive a more specific AfricanAmerican orientation. Almost all the students felt this approach highlighted their difference in a negative way. Lastly, the study found that students struggled profoundly with adapting to their predominantly white campuses. They re-

ported often experiencing severe pushback from their families over this issue. The completed study is making waves, Hart says. “A lot of the literature around this topic frames this from an either-or mentality, as if students either want to be included or they want to be separate. But it’s far more complicated than that,” explains LoweryHart. “What we’ve discovered is that students want both. They want to honor their past and embrace their future.”

Common Core testing might not help struggling schools. / PHOTODISC

States that have adopted a stricter, standardized schools curriculum are having difficulty finding the resources to support the more rigorous requirements, a study released last week shows. Of the 40 states that adopted the Common Core State Standards, 34 reported trouble finding adequate funding to support the stringent activities the curriculum entails, said the survey by the Center for Education Policy at George Washington University. “Finding adequate

resources is the main challenge looming over states’ efforts to prepare districts, schools, principals and teachers for the Common Core,” said Diane Stark Rentner, deputy director of national programs for CEP and author of the study. Nearly all the states that adopted Common Core, an initiative that is designed to lead to national standardized English and math tests for kindergarten through 12th grade, are complying with the curriculum, the study found. Even Oprah Winfrey isn’t safe from discrimination, as she learned while shopping for a handbag in Zurich recently. Who ya gonna call? Saul Goodman TV. Bob Odenkirk is ready for a “Breaking Bad” spin-off. Fans of “Breaking Bad” know that killing off major characters is nothing new to the series. And anyone who thought Bob Odenkirk’s character, the sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman, would get axed before the final eight episodes is in good company. “I kept waiting for them to fit me for a severed head,” Odenkirk tells us. “But they never did — they just didn’t want to spend money on that much wax for the size head that I have,” he jokes. Odenkirk has made it to at least this point in the series, and there’s talk about a possible spin-off for his character. But we’ll let the man himself tell you more about that, as well as how much he knows about the crooked counsel’s final “Breaking Bad” moments. Everyone has high expectations about this last season. How do you feel leading up to it? I’m gonna feel just like a fan feels, just like you or anyone who loves the show. Well, I like to think it doesn’t end, but … I would say I pretty much know how Saul’s story ends. I don’t know ultimately how Walter White’s story ends. That’s what I avoided, and even though I know everything that leads up to it, I just don’t know the choices he makes in the final episode.

Often, spiritually guided, inspired moments in our lives end up being just … moments. In other words, despite your excellent intentions, you cleanse and then go right back to eating office cupcakes. You work out for a month and then stop moving at all. You plan to cut off a toxic relationship and then, in a moment of weakness, text that person you know is bad for you. Why? The truth is that living a healthy, miraculous life requires real commitment and practice. Without it, even your most soul-directed intentions may falter. The right tools make these moments more of a mind-set. Try these tips and practices that I created and use all the time.

Practice radical forgiveness When we slip up, we often enter a cycle of guilt that

sabotages our progress even more. What if you could learn to forgive yourself on the spot? Forgiveness is a choice you make. Next time you judge yourself for falling off the wagon, simply say, “I choose to forgive myself now.” Then relax into that commitment. You can also try to catch yourself in the act of self-attack. In those moments, redirect your energy by focusing something you do like about yourself.

It’s easy to forget about the long-term consequences of small choices, especially when temptation (say, a jumbo frosted cupcake) is right in front of you. But playing out the entire story from start to finish can help you see the bigger picture. For example: After you eat the cupcake, a sugar headache sets in and you’ve added some unwanted calories to

Work on willpower When it comes to selfdiscipline, the words “don’t” and “can’t” come up a lot. Though the words can be used interchangeably, they hold much different power. A recent study done by researchers at Boston College and the University of Houston shows that replacing the word “can’t” with “don’t” can help you change negative patterns. The reason? “I don’t do that,” it is an empowering sentence, versus, “I can’t do that,” which isn’t.

Remember that trains don’t wait If you don’t have a firm routine in the morning, you can find yourself struggling to pull yourself together and get out the door. This pattern of behavior can not only make you miss your

train, it’s also a great way to forget important things at home. So, remember: Trains do not wait. Period. Missing your train only adds more time to your commute, so plan accordingly! Hint: Creating a morning routine will save time and result in a less-panicked you.

How to hack your commute and relax The commute to and from work can seem like the longest part of your day, especially if you’re tired on the way in and more tired on the way out. It’s easy to squander this time staring off into space, but you’ll feel better in the long run if you spend your commute productively. MEGHAN GRAVES

Living in a world built around technology makes it easy to get things done without sitting at a desk. Starting projects, reading the news, paying bills and making appointments

You can survive with no cell phone, no music — nothing. Some days the most productive thing to do is let your body catch up with life. Work relationships. Try this advice for making sure that huge ego doesn’t overshadow you.

A narcissist’s ability to make you feel good inside can draw you right into their world. Their magnetizing gaze can lock on you and make you feel good. But the author of “Freeing Yourself from the Narcissist in Your Life,” Linda Martinez-Lewi, has offered ways to identify and deal with people with this fixed personality disorder in the workplace.

Take a step back Although having the skills to identify a narcissist is important, it is imperative to be able to separate yourself from them at work in order to avoid being controlled.

pens, you can point it out to them in a courteous way,” says Martinez-Lewi. “You have to be very delicate. Don’t confront them head-on, or they’ll let you have it.”

Kill ’em with kindness

Martinez-Lewi says that if people don’t, “they become a victim of narcissistic abuse.” “[Narcissists] project their unconscious impulses, feelings, thoughts, fears and rage on to the victim,” says Martinez-Lewi. “They can be vindictive, they can get very angry.” As a result, she adamantly calls on all victims to remember to make the mental and sometimes physical separation from the narcissist.

Play nice and keep your distance when dealing with a narcissist at work, says Linda Martinez- Lewi. / PROVIDED

Protect yourself Martinez-Lewi recommends taking good care of yourself by getting enough rest, eating healthy and exercising. However, your psychological state of mind is just as important. “You [must] remain as

separate and detached from them emotionally and as psychologically as you can,” says MartinezLewi. Being rational and staying composed definitely will take practice, but if it avoids a volcanic confrontation, it’s worth it. “If something hap-

“A narcissist can provide you with many opportunities, since their thinking is so grandiose,” she says. “Use areas of your mind that you wouldn’t have thought of otherwise.” Martinez-Lewi says to compliment narcissists in a very authentic way, but be wary of getting too comfortable with them. “Enjoy their good qualities,” recommends Martinez-Lewi, “but always remember that they have a fixed personality disorder that is not going to change.”

Check out these telltale signs

Is there a narcissist in your life? Martinez-Lewi describes these people as “great method actors” because while they’re deceitful and lack conscience, she adds: “They’re playing a part. And in a way they kind of believe it.” Huge ego: “Many of them are very grandiose,” says MartinezLewi. “They have this sense of themselves that’s larger than life and better than anyone. They are perfect and superior.” Ruthless and cutthroat: Although narcissists do tend to have an outstanding brilliance, Martinez-Lewi explains that they are also unable to have any kind of emotional intimacy. “They will step over anybody to get what they want,” says Martinez-Lewi.

Reform is needed Republicans and Democrats in the Senate deserve praise for passing immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship for nearly 11 million Americans. The House should be next. I think this is unacceptable to the millions of immigrants who want citizenship. The path to citizenship already has the support of a majority of the House. My father came to this country as a 13-year-old orphan. Through hard work, he was able to earn enough money to become a permanent resident. I am the first woman in my family to go to college. Rodriguez homers, but Gardner bails out Yanks MLB. Mariano Rivera surrendered another homer to Miguel Cabrera as he blew his third straight save. In terms of baseball results, Alex Rodriguez had the most productive showing since his return. In the end, it still was almost not enough for the Yankees. Miguel Cabrera continued his onslaught against Yankee pitching by hitting a home run — for his third straight game and second in three days off Mariano Rivera — in the ninth inning as Rivera blew a third straight save for the first time in his career. However, Rodriguez’s day ended with him catching Brett Gardner’s helmet

in the wild celebration after the center fielder’s solo home run with two outs in the ninth gave the Yankees a 5-4 victory over the Tigers yesterday. “It’s a work in progress,” Rodriguez said of his best day out of the five

games he has played so far. “Hopefully it’s a step in the right direction.” Cabrera’s acquisition by the Tigers came in the same offseason Rodriguez opted out of his initial 10year contract signed with Texas. The Yankees agreed

to re-sign Rodriguez to a contract that will take him to 42 years old, a week after Cabrera was traded by the Marlins to the Tigers. “His bat stays in the strike zone a long time and he’s smart,” Detroit manager Jim Leyland said of Cabrera. “He also knows when people are trying to pound him in: He opens up a little bit, pulls his hands in to hit it out to left. He’s just a great hitter.” But when Gardner’s home run landed in the second deck beyond right field, things were slightly better for everyone on the Yankees. “That’s the first time I’ve ever hit a walk-off home run,” Gardner said. “It might be the last.”
