Report: The NYPD was spying on city mosques Watching. Local Muslim groups called for an investigation after receiving proof of police spying. A new report from the AP revealed that the NYPD had designated mosques and Islamic organizations across New York City as terrorist organizations in order to justify long-term surveillance. Now, Muslim community leaders are calling for a Department of Justice investigation into the NYPD’s intelligence operations. Linda Sarsour, whose organization, the ArabAmerican Association of New York, was targeted by the NYPD, spoke of the NYPD’s efforts “to infiltrate [the Association’s] board,”

particularly in light of the efforts she said her organization has made to work with Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. “As we were inviting Commissioner Kelly and his leadership into our mosques, into our institutions, he was coming through the back door,” Sarsour lamented. The president of the Arab American Association of New York, Dr. Ahmad Jaber, said the discoveries made him feel “betrayed” after the work he has been doing to build a relationship with the NYPD. Kelly appointed Jaber to a position on the Muslim Advisory Council to the NYPD; Jaber resigned on Wednesday. The NYPD did not respond to a request for comment.

Gus, the Central Park Zoo’s polar bear, died Tuesday at age 27. Gus was euthanized under anesthesia by Wildlife Conservation Society veterinarians after a large, inoperable tumor was found in his thyroid. Before the procedure, Gus began exhibiting abnormal feeding behavior, with difficulty eating. Gus was born in 1985

at the Toledo Zoo before coming to the Central Park Zoo in 1988. The zoo estimates that 20 million people visited him. “Gus was an icon at the Central Park Zoo and a great source of joy for our visitors and staff,” Jim Breheny, the Wildlife Conservation Society’s executive vice president of zoos and aquarium, said in his obituary.

Gus became a sensation in 1994 for his repetitive swimming patterns. Breheny said Gus was an “ambassador” for a species facing life-threatening problems in a changing environment. The median life expectancy for male polar bears in zoos is 21 years, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums reports. ANNA SANDERS

De Blasio surges in the latest voter poll Top dog. The public advocate is close to avoiding a runo in the latest mayoral poll. Public Advocate Bill de Blasio is surging among likely voters in the latest poll on the Democratic mayoral primary. Of 602 likely Democratic primary voters, de Blasio has 36 percent of the vote, just shy of the 40 percent need to avoid a runoff election and clinch the nomination, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday. “The political cliche, that the most liberal candidate wins the Democratic primary in New York, seems to be alive and well,â€? said Quinnipiac University

Bill de Blasio greet voters at a senior center in Brooklyn. / BESS ADLER, METRO

Polling Institute director Maurice Carroll. “New ideas, like his tax-the-rich proposal, win big for de Blasio. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who has been a frontrunner in the race from the beginning, has 21 percent of the vote and is in a statistical dead-

heat with former City Comptroller Bill Thompson, who has 20 percent of the vote. Former Congressman Anthony Weiner has just 8 percent of the vote, followed by City Comptroller John Liu. In a comparable Quinnipiac poll two weeks ago,

de Blasio had 30 percent of the vote. He would beat both Quinn and Thompson in runoff election scenarios, the new poll suggests. Of those polled, 65 percent said the city needs to take a different direction from Mayor Michael Bloomberg. These sentiments may have helped boost de Blasio, who has tried to paint himself as the “anti-Bloomberg. “Voters seem to be getting bored with Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Carroll added. Nearly a third of voters said there was a “good chance they would change their minds before the Sept. 10 primary. The poll has a margin of error plus or minus 4 percentage points.

NYPD. Cabbie ran down car and stabbed girlfriend to death A cabbie allegedly ran down a car his girlfriend was riding in and then stabbed her to death on a Bronx highway early Wednesday morning. Police sources said the 31-year-old taxi driver followed an SUV Katherine German was riding in along Pelham Parkway and struck it, causing the vehicle to overturn. After the crash, police said the man exited his taxi with a knife. He allegedly ap-

proached the SUV and stabbed German, 20, numerous times while she was still in the crushed car. Police found German and her companion, who was driving, in the SUV. German was declared dead at the scene of the accident. Her friend sustained minor lacerations. The taxi driver was still at the scene of the accident when police arrived. He was taken into custody by police. ANNA SANDERS

Administration. Syria options include multi-day strikes The Obama administration is considering military options that include multi-day strikes on Syrian government targets in response to last week’s chemical weapons attack, a senior U.S. official said on Wednesday, Aug. 28. “The options are not limited to just one day,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity, as the prospects for a U.S.-led air and missile assault on Syria looked all but certain.

TOM FOREMAN POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT FOR CNN

Though the White House said President Barack Obama had yet to make a final decision on exactly how to respond, U.S. security officials have said that any air campaign would likely involve cruise missiles fired from U.S. warships in the Mediterranean. But the United States does not intend to act unilaterally should it choose to go forward with military action, the senior official said. REUTERS

Here is what will shock me: If we ever make it through another awards show without something “shocking” happening. I put that word in quotes because even though the Twitterverse went agog, I didn’t even raise an eyebrow over Miley Cyrus’ tongue-wagging, bootyshaking antics at the Video Music Awards. Why? I’ve seen this act before. Michael Jackson did it. So did his sister. So did Madonna, Prince, Ozzy Osbourne and a whole rogue’s gallery of entertainers. Doing something that seems outrageous is as much a part of show biz as footlights and grease paint. In case you missed it (and you should drop to your knees to thank heaven right now if you did) the erstwhile Hannah Montana pranced around surrounded by giant dancing teddy bears (I have no idea why), croaking out a truly dreadful song, while wearing a pair of outfits that … well, let’s just say if Victoria wore them she’d

Every headline screamed about Miley’s post-teen twerking as if no one there had contemplated (gasp!) that someone would come out in a skimpy costume and do something outrageous. have no more secrets. Then she backed her assets up to Robin Thicke and started grinding like a fresh roast coffeemaker. Critics roared: It was

rude, raunchy, and R-rated! It was also right on the money. The day after, you could scarcely find a word about anyone’s brilliant songs or imaginative videos. Every headline screamed about Miley’s post-teen twerking as if no one there had contemplated (gasp!) that someone would come out in a skimpy costume and do something outrageous. Cue the “Casablanca” clip. “I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!” In the end it came down to a choice. Before the awards, a lot of Americans probably had only one thought about Miley Cyrus: When is this train wreck going to end? And now, they’re asking: What is she going to do next? For any performer, the second question is the one you want on everyone’s mind. I’m not saying what she did was good nor that it showcased the best of America. I’m just saying, “You’ve come a long way, Hannah.”

CULTURE Indie spotlight

‘Salinger’ (Sept. 6) Hollywood screenwriter Shane Salerno (“Avatar”) goes nonfiction with this documentary promising well-hidden new revelations about author J.D. Salinger. (Spoiler: There are new Salinger manuscripts coming.)

‘Mother of George’ (Sept. 13) This quiet drama immerses viewers in the cloistered world of African emigres in Crown Heights, Brooklyn — among them a new bride whose husband (Isaach de Bankole) appears to be barren yet demands a child. More importantly, it again proves that cinematographer Bradford Young (“Pariah,” “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”) is one of the greats.

‘As I Lay Dying’ (Sept. 27) James Franco’s 17th directed film is an adaptation of an unadaptable novel by the unadaptable William Faulkner. Also, James Franco has directed 17 films.

‘Don Jon’ (Sept. 27) Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes his featurelength directorial debut with this portrait of an oily Jersey boy sex addict with bad hair (himself) who gets schooled by a hotcha Jersey girl (Scarlett Johansson). Tony Danza plays his dad!

Vin Diesel returns as his funky-eyed “Pitch Black” anti-hero in “Riddick.” / UNIVERSAL PICTURES

Oscar season a-hoy!

Movies. Turn your brain back on. It’s time for AMPAS bait — and also Robert De Niro with a bat and Metallica in 3-D IMAX.

‘Riddick’ (Sept. 6) What: Vin Diesel wasn’t yet a star when 2000’s lean “Pitch Black” came out and was stuck in a valley during the bloated 2004 spin-off “The Chronicles of Riddick.” Now that he’s back — or at least back in a franchise he once tried to abandon — all’s good, presumably. Why: Series director David Twohy has long been making genre films, and as of “The Perfect Getaway” has finally gotten good at them. That this runs less than two hours is a good sign. Why not: Sorry, but “Pitch Black” is just so-so. This also features a character named Lord Siberius Vaako. Will get an Oscar for: Best Animation of the Clearly Tired and Aging Vin Diesel.

‘The Family’ (Sept. 13) What: Eurotrash auteur Luc Besson (“The Fifth Element,” “Taken”) sucks up

Robert De Niro (with bat) stands up to the mob he snitched on in “The Family.” / JESSICA FORDE

Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones into his OTT orbit. The first two play parents in a family hiding from a mob they ratted out. Why: Say what you will, Besson is probably the last person with significant money making genuinely insane blockbuster product. Why not: Besson’s movies are stupid. Sometimes this isn’t a good thing. Will get an Oscar for: Best Robert De Niro Performance of Fall 2013. (He’s also in “Last Vegas,” “American Hustle” and “Grudge Match.”)

‘Insidious 2’ (Sept. 13) What: The second horror film from “Saw”’s James Wan starring Patrick Wilson in two months —

plays a small-town carpenter who kidnaps the creepy man (Paul Dano) he thinks kidnapped his 6-year-old daughter and her best friend. Why: Hugh Jackman excels at playing tortured brooders. Why not: With his Oscar nominated “Incendies,” Canadian director Denis Villeneuve sucked much of the idiosyncrasy out of Wajdi Mouawad’s play “Scorched.” This seems to be a heavy, humorless and obvious portrait of obsession and false justice. Will get an Oscar for: Least Joyful Film of 2013

‘Metallica: Through the Never’

James Hetfield stands in front of lasers in the concert movie/narrative “Metallia: Through the Never.” / CAROLE SEGAL

after “The Conjuring” — is a sequel to another WanWilson horror from 2009. Why: Wan — soon for “Fast & Furious 7,” or however it will be titled — is getting better and better at old-school frights. Why not: There are no such things as ghosts, and movies like this keep

people, even smart people, thinking there are. Will get an Oscar for: Best James Wan Film of the Quarter

‘Prisoners’ (Sept. 20) What: Hugh Jackman

(Sept. 27) What: Remember “The Song Remains the Same,” the Led Zeppelin concert movie peppered with each member’s ridiculous fantasies? This one marries a Metallica show to a narrative featuring a young man (Dane DeHaan, “The Place Beyond the Pines”) going on a “surreal journey” that involves a deadly horseman — in 3-D IMAX! Why: See “What.” Why not: See “What.” Will get an Oscar for: Best Lasers Behind 50-Something Metalheads

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney go to space in Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity.” / WARNER BROS. PICTURE

October. Cuaron goes interstellar and Knoxville gets old. ‘Gravity’ (Oct. 4) What: Alfonso Cuaron finally follows up 2006’s “Children of Men” with this 3-D extravaganza, concerning the plight of two astronauts (George Clooney and Sandra Bullock) — and no one else. Why: Cuaron and superstar cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki are visual whizzes who will no doubt do loads with the technology and sensory aspects. Why not: Sandra Bullock is very talented but not a great straight dramatic actress. Even her Oscarwinning “The Blind Side” role is largely a comic turn. Will get an Oscar for: Actual Good Use of 3-D

‘Captain Phillips’ (Oct. 11) What: Earlier this year, adventurous audiences got the Danish “A Hijacking,” concerning a ship overtaken by Somali pirates. Here’s the big-budgeted American edition (albeit not a remake), starring Tom Hanks as real-life

abductee Richard Phillips. Why: Director Paul Greengrass (“The Bourne Ultimatum”) is a master at capturing the now with whiplash handheld megacutting that’s regularly misdiagnosed as being chaotic and unfollowable. Why not: Greengrass also made “Green Zone,” which he struggled in vain to make into more than a groaning history lesson told with 20/20 vision. Will get an Oscar for: The Most Oscars

‘12 Years a Slave’ (Oct. 18) What: Avant-garde artist Steve McQueen (as opposed to the late superstar) goes big with this adaptation of the memoir of Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor), a freed slave sold back into slavery. Why: McQueen is a minimalist who thinks like a maximalist, and both “Hunger” and “Shame” — which, like “Slave,” feature Michael Fassbender, and sometimes his penis — boast scores of isolated stunners. Why not: Both those films

faltered to varying degrees when actually addressing the major issues (the Troubles, sex addiction) they ostensibly tackled. Will get an Oscar for: Best Non-Use of Michael Fassbender’s Unclothed Member

‘All Is Lost’ (Oct. 18) What: First comes the two-person “Gravity,” then a movie starring only Robert Redford not speaking while he tries to survive while adrift at sea. Why: Somewhat unexpectedly, this was a major find at this year’s Cannes, where it unfortunately played out of competition. Why not: “Margin Call,” the last film by director J.C. Chandor, wasn’t exactly a visual feast. Will get an Oscar for: Best Actor, probably

‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa’ (Oct. 25) What: Johnny Knoxville plays a bad grandpa in a loose plot that strings together “Jackass”-y grossout stunts. Why: Sue us: “Jackass” is hilarious. Why not: It’s not in 3-D. Will get an Oscar for: Best Actor, probably MATT PRIGGE

(Oct 11) Insanely, Disney did not suppress this Sundance craze, furtively shot with cameras snuck into Disney World and then pounded into a fantasy-horror about a man having a Disneyfied

breakdown.

‘Blue is the Warmest Color’ (Oct. 25) This year’s Palme d’Or winner is luckily being shipped out to American theaters with no cuts — a biggie

considering it features a handful of incredibly graphic sex scenes between a teenager (Adele Exarchopoulos) and her 20-something girlfriend (Lea Seydoux). There’s also a blistering, epic look at the life of their relationship, so get your mind out of the gutter.

(Nov. 1) What: Orson Scott Card’s classic 1985 novel about kids (Asa Butterfield and Hailee Steinfeld) trained for military battle against aliens finally gets a big-budget adaptation. Why: The novel is one of sci-fi’s brainiest. Why not: In case you haven’t heard, Card is a gigantic homophobe who called for revolution if gay marriage was ever implemented and now thinks people who hate him are being intolerant. But this isn’t the first — or gazillionth — time an awful human being has produced good art. Will get an Oscar for: Most Talented Dedicated Homophobe (sorry, Mel Gibson)

Why: If this isn’t ridiculously entertaining, then there’s no God. Why not: There’s probably no God anyway. But seriously, there’s zero chance this isn’t a blast. Things to expect from the new One Direction movie Movie. They’ve taken over the music world — now, the boys turn to ďŹ lm.

’N Sync’s not the only boy band making news this week. One Direction is releasing their “doc-buster, “One Direction: This Is Us, on Friday, Aug. 30. In just three short years, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik have taken over the world. “One Direction: This Is Us gives fans inside access to the young men, touching upon everything from their goofy personalities to their fears about a life in showbiz. Based on a press conference we attended with the lads on Aug. 24, here’s a primer on what to expect from the film:

1

Their ‘X Factor’ auditions: Director Morgan Spurlock (yes, the filmmaker who brought you “Super Size Me) brings you back to 2010, when the much younger-looking guys first auditioned for Simon Cowell on “The X Factor. After each boy was cut as a solo act, Cowell decided to put them together and have them continue the competition as a group. They didn’t

What you won’t see:

Their love lives Spurlock says that in order to keep the ďŹ lm’s focus on the boys and their careers, personal

take home the crown that season, but they did promise fans that wouldn’t be the end of One Direction — and they were right.

2

Hardcore fans: One D fans — or Directioners, as they call themselves — are everywhere in the film, and that was intentional. “The film is definitely about getting across the story of the fans and the way that the fans definitely made this band, Payne says. Watch as herds of young girls around the world scream and cry for a glimpse at their idols.

3

Tons of concert footage: Whether or not you’re into One Direction, you’ll be treated to a concert of theirs when you

take in the 3-D film. And let’s face it: Even non-fans can hum along to “What Makes You Beautiful.

4

A look at their home lives: It’s certainly been a whirlwind of a ride for these five boys, but what’s the effect been like on their families? You’ll find out in the movie, thanks to interviews with the guys’ parents. In one touching scene, Malik is on the phone with his mom as she tours the house her son has bought her. Both sides of their conversation are juxtaposed, giving the audience real-time footage of that special moment.

Why Spurlock? Though the director has presented provocative material in the past (“Super Size Me,â€? “The Greatest Movie Ever Soldâ€?) this ďŹ lm is in a much lighter category. It’s a straightforward look at the band, in a style

similar to other concert ďŹ lms of recent years, like Katy Perry’s and Justin Bieber’s — both ďŹ lms that Spurlock was oered to direct. After passing on both for scheduling reasons, he told reporters on Aug. 24 that he couldn’t miss a third opportunity to follow

one of the biggest artists of the day around with his camera. And nothing was o-limits. “We wanted to make a documentary, so the only way to make the best documentary is by giving the cameras access to all areas,â€? Horan says.

‘Passion’ Brian De Palma (“Carrie,” “Scarface”) returns with a fans-only venture: a gleefully trashy erotic thriller that pits Rachel McAdams against Noomi Rapace.

‘Afternoon Delight’ Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke are trapped in a car in “Getaway.” / SIMON VERSANO

The great Kathryn Hahn

Don’t pick up Selena Gomez Studio B-movie. Ethan Hawke growls through another trashy genre programmer.

Review ‘Getaway’ Director: Courtney Solomon Stars: Ethan Hawke, Selena Gomez

The lean, cheap genre film is largely a lost art form, one that periodically pops up in our blockbuster-obsessed culture. But they happen enough that one can be forgiven for somewhat resisting “Getaway,” a trashy, cheap thriller released by a major studio (Warner Brothers) and starring both a serious thespian who’s of late become a B-movie king (Ethan Hawke) and a teen pop sensation not above dirtying her image (Selena Gomez). It’s mildly diverting, and it clearly hopes you won’t point out its inconsistencies or the areas where it could have tried harder. Hawke is given the pretty terrific name of Brent Magna, a former NASCAR star whose wife has been kidnapped. For ransom, Brent must steal a car in Bulgaria — where films are cheap to make — and do whatever a mysterious man, shown only in graphic mouth close-ups, commands. (The credits on the Internet spoil the famous, crazy actor’s identity, but we’ll be nice.) This baddie forces him to plow headlong into public spaces,

Rating: PG-13

••••• evade a never-ending legion of police cars, drive down stairs fit for people, plus other bits of relatively minor, eventually faintly monotonous daredevil acts. The film’s main challenge is overcoming Gomez, who plays the car’s real owner, and who enters the picture looking to carjack her stolen ride. Gomez does become gradually half-tolerable. But the film, like its villain, proves wussier than it should be. At first Brent is ordered to kill her. When he won’t — partly because he’s no murderer, partly because then we’d be stuck with just Ethan Hawke — the film offers no significant punishment. The bad guy just gives him more stuff to do, which is much like the stuff that came before and will come after.

She’s just being Miley I’m just going to go ahead and say it: Miley Cyrus DGAF and I sort of love her for it. What? Don’t look at me like that. The hipster dream sequence/American Apparel-ad on-acid spectacle that was the video for “We Can’t Stop” was weird as hell, but it was also sort of amazing. And here’s the thing, people. Do you know how old Miley Cyrus is? She is 20 years old. Do you remember what you were doing at 20? Getting all kinds of messed up on all kinds of substances and making all kinds of mistakes. (Ahem, at least that’s what I imagine YOU all were doing. I was studying for finals, in my pajamas, at all times.) The difference between 20-year-old Miley Cyrus and 20-year-old you and me is that we didn’t have cameras documenting our every move. (Unless you did, in which case — hey, cool, thanks for taking time out of your fancy celebrity life to read this column!) So, in my estimation, Miley Cyrus is pretty much hitting all the normal, 20-year-old idiot signposts — and awesomely so. Case and point: in response to the hysterics the entire world has been having since her VMA performance (I’m having a little chuckle at my desk right now imagining bewildered middle-aged women across the country furiously Googling the word “twerk”) Miley did not issue some half-assed apology via Twitter. No, Miley instead began tweeting a bunch of trashy pics of herself — featuring her bony butt from its least bony angle — by way of issuing the world a big middle finger. Get on with your bad self, Miley.

Kris Jenner and Bruce Jenner can’t make a marriage work, where’s the hope for the rest of us? / WIREIMAGE

Jenners are kaput

Tough week for the Kardashians. Those rich, privileged, pampered people just can’t catch a break. On the heels of all the media fuss surrounding Lamar Odom’s crack addiction (and Lamar Odom’s brief disappearance into what was probably a crack den — and Khloe Kardashian’s freaking out about the aforementioned crack-related things), we’ve now learned that Khloe isn’t the only Kardashian whose world is Krashing down around her.

Apparently, the man trapped inside the leathery orange Bruce Jenner suit finally got enough oxygen through those surgically diminished nose holes to get his brain working again. And what the brain said was RUN BRUCE RUN. Kris Jenner and Bruce Jenner are reportedly now separated, is what I’m saying. Man, if those two crazy kids can’t make it work, who can? (Probably not Kim and Kanye, I’m guessing.)

Dorothy Robinson will return Sept. 3.

How do you like dem apples, nerds? Speaking of everyone making a big stink out of nothing on the Internetz, remember when it was announced that Ben Affleck was going to play Batman and everyone FREAKED THE EFF OUT? I do. I almost had to cancel my Facebook account, because if I had to read one more rambling, misspelled diatribe about how Ben Affleck playing Batman was going to speed along global warming or give babies AIDS or whatever it is that people think will happen when this movie star plays a guy in tights, I was going to gouge my eyes out with a rusty spoon.

Because, why so mad, bro? I didn’t even know there was going to be yet another Batman movie, much less do I give a good crap who is going to star in it. Anyway, Ben’s best buddy Matt Damon feels the same way I do and said as much in an interview with The Times of India. “I know there are a lot of people grousing on the Internet. It’s Batman!” he said. “[That’s] certainly within his skill set. Batman just sits there with his cowl over his head and whispers in a kinda gruff voice at people.” I couldn’t have said it better so ... I won’t.

The term “throwing shade” is a term all the kids are using to describe the fine art of putting someone down in public (Taylor Swift’s unmistakable diss during Harry Styles’ acceptance speech at the VMAs, for example). Enter Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi, two L.A.-based comics best known for “Throwing Shade,” a podcast that combines their respective feminist and gay-rights segments from the Current TV program “InfoMania.” “We are superficial people who give a s—,” says Safi over the phone from California. “But Erin and I definitely do not keep up with the Kardashians. “

Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi fist the butts of inequality. / PROVIDED

“It’s lowbrow and highbrow,” adds Gibson. “All we care about...is being entertaining. We are pop culture addicts.” And while Current TV is now defunct, fans of Gibson (who has appeared on “Chelsea Lately” and “Parks and Recreation”) and Emmy-winner Safi (who has written for Funny or Die and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”) can still keep up with these lovable degenerates on their website. And, according to Gibson, it’s not so bad starring on an Internet show. “Now we are back to talking

about things like putting hands in butts,” she says. Now, Gibson and Safi are taking “Throwing Shade” on the road, on a tour for which the two promise to both delight and horrify audience memIf you go

bers, in equal measure. But, ultimately, by throwing shade, what they’re are really doing is shedding light. “I think that [women’s and gay issues] intersect in that homophobia is just misplaced misogyny. We are both huge groups of people who have been maligned,” says Safi, reflecting on the abundance of hate and ignorance in the media. “Unfortunately, and fortunately, there is always something to talk about.”

STYLE

Style. Designer Lizzy Disney’s quiet but cool bags are on our radar. Although billed as an emerging fashion talent, handbag designer Lizzy Disney isn’t exactly new to the scene. A graduate of the prestigious Central Saint Martins, she styled shoots for Vogue before becoming chief designer at Jacques Fath, later swapping womenswear for accessories when she founded her own eponymous line. Her work stands apart from the deluge of hardware-heavy, logo-covered handbags that dominate shop floors. And you can expect to see a lot more of her timeless, understated satchels now that things are heating up for the British-born designer on the retail front. What prompted the move to accessories? I started making bags for myself and it grew from there. A friend would ask if I could make one for them and then their friends would approach me.

One to watch

seeing bags decorated with lots of logos. If you could work with anyone in the world of accessory design, who would it be? I’d love to work in the Hermes atelier. I’m not a trained accessories designer, so it’s still a big learning process. I love the craftsmanship of it, so would love to learn more. What kind of woman do you have in mind when designing your bags? My customers don’t care about buying the latest must-have thing. I have quite a loyal clientele who all seem to work in creative industries. They range from the ages of 30 to 50 and they are all very clever.

This Lizzy Disney Lock bag ($520) is available at www.avenue32.com. / PROVIDED

Did you ever buy into the “it” bag trend? I have a Chanel bag, but I didn’t buy it because it was an “it” bag. I’m quite old-fashioned — I’m not on Facebook, I don’t do Twitter, so I don’t really do “it” bags.

How does your design approach respond to trends? It doesn’t. I created the envelope bag because I wanted something that would force me to take less things with me. I also wanted something really simple, as I was sick of

Salon spotlight. Is sugaring for you? Hibba NYC fills us in

To book an appointment and find out about Labor Day deals, visit www.hibbabeauty.com. / PROVIDED

With Labor Day weekend approaching, hair removal is on your mind. One of our favorite salons in the city for waxing and threading also offers a service called sugaring. Owner Hibba Kapil tells us why this might be a better option for you. What is sugaring? It’s a popular Middle Eastern process, similar to waxing, that uses a gel made with sugar, lemon and water. What are the benefits? It’s gentler. Most waxes

contain titanium dioxide, which is like a glue that sticks to your skin, but sugar doesn’t pull your skin. People who are allergic to wax or who have psoriasis can use sugar. Is it less painful than waxing? I think it’s the same. The results are just 100 times better. Your hair will grow finer and softer. However, it doesn’t work for everyone. If a customer has been shaving for a while, we start them with waxing first. TINA CHADHA

Something fishy? Not here! Trending. These seafood soirees are the perfect send-off to summer.

Popping up

Go now

Oceana (120 W. 49th St., 212-759-5941) is Michelin-starred, which can sometimes mean long reservation waits and high prices, but the eatery’s pop-up lobster stand next door is decidedly more low-key. Swing by before Labor Day for classic Maine lobster rolls ($18), plus chocolate whoopie pies, chips and sodas. The stand is open from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and takes phone orders for pickup.

Cracking crab legs and lobster claws is much more fun when you’ve got friends around (and you’re less likely to feel ridiculous in that bib when others are donning them too). Gather your friends at one of these seafood fests and wave goodbye to summer. Crab-apalooza is a real thing at Back Forty (190 0 Ave. A, 212-388-1990) and fish fiends are in luck — it’s taking place through this weekend. The culmination of the eatery’s summer Tuesday night crab boils, this weeklong celebration has you combing through a mess of crabs dumped on

your table. On Thursday and Saturday, the restaurant will stick to a Chesapeake-style party, with corn bread, potatoes, string beans and more. On Friday, the Gulf-style party will feature crabs plus pho noodles with cilantro, chilies, scallions and Sriracha. Not to be outdone, Back Forty’s sister restaurant, Back Forty West (70 Prince St., 212219-8570) is throwing a similar Lobster Maine-ia through Saturday. thr At Carmine’s (2450 Broadway, 212-362-2200), the portions are served familystyle, so order the s restaurant’s Italian res clambake for two only clam if you and your guest are pretty hungry. It comes with a salad or bowl of pasta to start, then two one-pound lobsters, six baked clams, 12 mussels, roasted potatoes and polenta. The meal will set you back $65. The upscale seafood

shack L&W Oyster Co. (254 Fifth Ave., 212203-7772) hosts New England-style lobster dinners on Tuesday and Saturday nights, which include steamed or stuffed lobster, grilled corn on the cob, potato salad, homemade cheddar goldfish and shots of strawberry lemonade. The menu is for evennumbered parties and is $29.50 per person. Naragansset Brewing Company is teaming up with Perilla (9 Jones St., 212-929-6868) for a series of three-course seafood dinners, Monday nights through Sept. 23. Dig into crab salad, Johnny cakes (fried cornmeal cakes), fried clams, slow-poached flaked hake, sausage, a

coffee-based dessert and more. All courses will be paired with the New England brew. Cost is $55 per person. The seafood plateaus at DBGB (199 Bowery, 212-933-5300) come in three sizes depending on how hungry your table is. If you want to treat yourself and your guests like royalty, opt for the Royale: In it you’ll find oysters, mussels, clams, shrimp, periwinkles and whelks, tuna tartare, razor clams, crab claws and lobster tail. The Royale is $99 per person, but $37 and $69 plateaus are available as well.

Sharpton’s Respect the not so sharp porn stars The gathering at the Lincoln Memorial commemorating the 1963 Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech was a ridiculous spectacle indeed. Led by Al “The Charlatan” Sharpton, this bunch had not much to offer but a grab bag of stale leftist desires and tiresome complaints. I get the impression that we are all supposed to bow our heads in obeisance to whatever idiotic notion comes out of the mouths of these celebrants just because they invoke the name of King. No one with a brain should buy what Sharpton and company is selling.

Re: ‘Pippi porn star’ (Metro, Aug. 28) What would a good morning be without a strong shot of espresso and Word columnist Alexandra Cavallo’s judgmental moralizing? She writes, “Let’s be honest, most people who get ejaculated upon for a living are pretty much dead on the inside.” As opposed to those who do so for free? Cavallo owes her job to the (s)exploits of celebs, so a bit less slut-shaming and a bit more compassion and appreciation are in order. PHIL GOLDMARX, VIA EMAIL

FANTASY FOOTBALL GUIDE NFL quarterbacks get the money, women and power. But in this golden age of passing, they don’t get the value in fantasy leagues. When you sit down to draft this weekend, the easy play will be to take familiar names like Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Peyton Manning in the first couple rounds. Don’t do it. The primary reason quarterbacks have become devalued in fantasy leagues is simply because there are so many good ones. Last year, 11 threw for 4,000 yards or more. If we’re in a 12-team league that

FANTASY

ADAM LEVITAN, LIVING THE FANTASY METRO’S FANTASY GURU BREAKS IT ALL DOWN

starts one quarterback, we’re going to get a quality asset. Don’t believe me? Try to poke holes in this 12-man list: Rodgers, Brees, Manning, Cam Newton,

Tom Brady, Matthew Stafford, Robert Griffin III, Colin Kaepernick, Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson, Matt Ryan and Tony Romo. The reason we can

live with any of these 12 is because quarterbacks are generally the most durable of all the positions. We desperately need quality depth at running back and wide receiver because we’re almost certainly going to incur injuries early and often at both of those spots. We also can live with any of the 12 quarterbacks because of relative value in starting lineups. All this means is that the difference between the No. 1 quarterback and the No. 12 guy will be miniscule compared to the gap between the No. 1 wideout and the No.

36 wideout. Lastly, there are tons of sleeper quarterbacks we can put on our bench. Michael Vick is a renewed threat to run for 800 yards, Jay Cutler is poised for the best year of his Chicago career and Ben Roethlisberger remains a difference maker. By being the last owner to take a quarterback, we set ourselves up to be absolutely stacked at the other positions, and don’t lose much value by doing so. It’s a winning strategy to take with you to the war room.

Keep these names in mind: •

Jordan Cameron, TE, Browns: What do Kellen Winslow, Antonio Gates and Greg Olsen all have in common? They all had career years under new Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski. Michael Floyd, WR, Cardinals: Arizona’s passing game features a one-two punch of upgrades. They added Carson Palmer and a new vertical pass game. Kenbrell Thompkins, WR, Patriots: Thompkins is an undrafted rookie who went out and earned the starting “X” receiver job by outplaying the competition.

Ronnie Hillman, RB, Broncos: Hillman has attracted a following as the Broncos’ starting back the entire offseason. Problem is, he fumbles and Montee Ball is breathing down his neck. Tavon Austin, WR, Rams: Don’t get fooled into thinking Austin will be a mini Percy Harvin. He’s electric in the open field, but he’s not nearly as physical. Philip Rivers, QB, Chargers: Even if Rivers’ arm strength wasn’t rapidly declining, he’d be in a bad spot with an awful line and a new coach.

Rules to draft by

1

Don’t drink — Think alcohol is fun? Then you probably think losing fantasy leagues is fun, too! The draft is a war of wits. Don’t let yourself get clouded until it’s over.

2

Adjust your rankings in PPR — Downgrade QBs heavily, downgrade RBs that don’t catch (Marshawn Lynch, Alfred Morris) and bump up possession WRs (Randall Cobb, Danny Amendola).

3

Don’t take a defense or kicker before Round 12 — They are too unpredictable and dependent on matchups. We’re better off stockpiling depth at real positions.

The Giants wrap up their preseason schedule Aug. 29 (7:30 p.m., NBC/NFL Network) with a trip to New England to face the Patriots. And while head coach Tom Coughlin ultimately wants to his banged-up team to simply end the exhibition season as healthy as possible, he knows there’s still work to do. Offensively inept The starters will play as many as 12-15 snaps against the Patriots, which is especially important for the offense considering how badly it has looked so far. Big Blue has only scored two touchdowns with its first unit and is 0-of-7 in the red zone,

meaning the No. 1s aren’t getting it done.

On the line So much has been written about the trials and tribulations of the reshuffled offensive line, but when quarterbacks are getting battered, rushing lanes aren’t staying open very long and drives aren’t being sustained — particularly in the red zone or in short yardage — eyes will be cast on the fateful five. James Brewer is the next to help patch up the line, as Jim Cordle failed his audition at starting center last week.

Jets vs. Eagles: Three things to watch A bunch of players who probably won’t be here next week feature for the Jets on Aug. 29 (7 p.m., CBS) in the fourth and final preseason game against the Eagles. Rookies and players currently on the roster looking to make the cut down to the 53-man roster or the practice squad will get most of the reps. We take a look at a few of the storylines you actually should be watching in the final preseason game:

1

QB depth Mark Sanchez won’t starting the game for the Jets — or even making an ill-advised fourth quarter cameo — as the “Sanchise” has been ruled out of this game by head coach Rex Ryan with a shoulder injury. Geno Smith, who could very well be the starter in Week 1 depending on that shoulder injury, will also get the night

off. Matt Simms, who performed very well in the fourth quarter and in overtime in Saturday, will start and try to make his case for the third-string job.

2

Sorting out defense The first-team defense has had some ups and plenty of downs in preseason, making it a point of emphasis for the unit to find some depth and playmakers to fill out the roster. Players who could make the roster with a strong showing include linebacker Ricky Sapp and defensive linemen

Lanier Coleman and Leger Douzable.

3

Chrebet, Part II Former Lehigh wide receiver Ryan Spadola is drawing comparisons to Jets legend Wayne Chrebet, who was an undrafted rookie free agent out of Hofstra who made the Jets on grit and determination. After a solid training camp and now three good games in preseason, including a clutch against last Saturday against the Giants, Spadola looks likely to make the roster. KRISTIAN DYER

An American woman may very well win the U.S. Open if Serena Williams continues her dominant form over the next two weeks. Yet the chances of an American man capturing this championship — or any other major in the foreseeable future — are about as likely as Miley Cyrus avoiding twerking. At the start of Wednesday’s play, six American men were through to the second round, with 6-foot10 John Isner and his rocket serve owning the best chance at winning.
