Brooklyn HS principal raped teenager: report Findings. The assistant principal reportedly raped a former student and threatened to turn her over to Immigration. A Department of Education assistant principal at a high school in Brooklyn raped a 17-year-old graduate of the school in his office in 2009, according to a report from the Special Commissioner of Investigation for the city’s public school system. William Abreu, then the assistant principal at Progress High School for Professional Careers, reportedly offered a student a job after she graduated, knowing that because of her immigration status, she could not legally live in the United States. On her first day of work, Abreu reportedly raped her and
threatened that he would “go to Immigration.” He then sent her to an afterschool program coordinator, Juan Martinez, for the same treatment. The investigation found Martinez also forced a then-15-year-old female student to perform oral sex on him in March 2011. Abreu has been suspended without pay since a June 2012 report from the same office found evidence he made sexual remarks to three 15-year-old students. Special Commissioner Richard Condon is urging the Department of Education to fire Abreu, and has referred his report to Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes. Condon also urged the Department of Education to ban Martinez from future employment.

The campaign is part of the 10th annual National Emergency Preparedness Month. “I think people are taking this much more seriously [after Sandy],” OEM Commissioner Joseph Bruno told DNAinfo. com. “I expect much more adherence than we’d ever had.”
Recommended plans to get ready for the coming hurricane season include having a discussion with loved ones about what to do and where to meet in the event of another disaster, particularly if phones aren’t working. Park life. Woman, 30, bitten, assaulted in Central Park attack
Warehouse buildings that have been sitting vacant along the waterfront in DUMBO for about 50 years will be developed into gleaming new commercial space, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Wednesday. The Brooklyn Bridge Park Board of Directors has chosen Midtown Equities to develop Empire Stores, transforming the massive facility so its brick walls encase restaurant, retail and office space. The park board also approved a lease that will allow Brooklyn-based performing arts company St. Ann’s Warehouse to develop a theater in the historic Tobacco Warehouse. “Brooklyn Bridge Park is a prime example of our city’s commitment to sustainable design and development,” Parks and Recreation Commissioner Veronica White said.
A 30-year-old woman walking in Central Park on Monday night was bitten by an unknown attacker. The victim was near West 102nd Street and West Drive just before 9:30 p.m. when a man grabbed her from behind, tried to rip off her blouse and then bit her left arm, NYC Park Advocates reported. When the woman tried to fight off the suspect, the man shouted,

The center is part of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s task force on truancy, chronic absenteeism and school engagement. “In order to keep kids out of the courtroom, we need to keep them in the classroom,” Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Bullying of Sikh and Asian students is up in NYC The new school year might be starting soon for New York students, but that doesn’t mean that it comes with a new solution to the age-old problem of bullying. Despite efforts to put more protections against bias-based harassment, more Asian American and Sikh students are being bullied in NYC public schools, a new report has found. The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund and the Sikh Coalition collaborated on a similar report back in 2009, which found that NYC public schools responded poorly to harassment and bullying, failing to offer adequate counseling to targeted students or fully investigate the incidents. Eliot Spitzer loses ground in new poll Erosion. The former New York governor fell into second place in the latest poll to be released. In the Democratic primary race for New York City comptroller, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer has moved ahead of disgraced former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer by just two percentage points in the latest poll published on Wednesday. Spitzer is trying to make his political comeback after being forced to resign as governor in 2008 because of a prostitution scandal. He had been far ahead in the race, but his lead has eroded. By the end of August, the two candidates were locked in a dead heat. On Wednesday, the latest Quinnipiac University poll of likely primary voters in the city for next Tuesday’s primary election found that 47 percent were likely to favor Stringer, while 45 percent said that they preferred Spitzer. Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro commits suicide in prison cell Moving on. Donations totaling $1.4 million poured in to help the women resume their lives. Ariel Castro committed suicide by hanging himself with a bed sheet in his prison cell, an Ohio coroner said yesterday, just one month into a life sentence for the kidnapping, rape and beatings of three women he imprisoned for a decade. The former school bus driver, who pleaded guilty to 937 counts in July, was found hanged in his cell at an Ohio prison late Tuesday, a state corrections official said. An autopsy yesterday confirmed the cause of death was suicide by hanging, said Dr. Jan Gorniak, the Franklin
County coroner. Though he had not been on suicide watch, he was in protective custody with guards checking on him every half hour. He was isolated from other inmates at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient. The Castro hanging closely followed that of Ohio death row inmate Billy Slagle, 44, who was found hanged in his prison cell on Aug. 4, three days before his scheduled execution. Results of an investigation had yet to be released. REUTERS

“This man couldn’t take, for even a month, a small portion of what he had dished out for more than a decade.” Timothy McGinty, Cuyahoga County prosecutor, on Castro making it only one month into a life sentence before committing suicide.

DeJesus’ cousin after Castro suicide: ‘May God have mercy’ The morning after Ariel Castro hanged himself in his prison cell, the cousin of victim Gina DeJesus had strong words about the man who stole nearly a decade of his victims’ lives. “The fact is may God have mercy on his soul, and literally, now that he chose to take his own life,” Sheila Figaro told Metro yesterday. When asked how DeJesus reacted to the news of Castro’s suicide, Figaro said, “Gina is doing very well. She is on the right path to getting healthy.” METRO

School violence
One dead, three hurt in Houston high school stabbing One student was killed and three others injured in what police said may have been a gang-related stabbing early yesterday at a suburban high school north of Houston. Three other students considered “persons of interest” were detained for questioning after the melee, Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said. Garcia said the unidentified student who died at Spring High School was 17 years old and two other students sustained minor injuries. The third injured student was transported by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma
Institute and was listed in good condition, hospital spokeswoman Alex Rodriguez said. “We believe that a confrontation of some sort occurred ... that ultimately led to a physical confrontation that then produced weapons,” Garcia said, adding that authorities were still looking for the “cutting instruments of some sort.” The high school was locked down for hours after the incident and little information was released to parents. Frustrated parents, standing in the sweltering heat across the street from the school, initially learned of the incident through local media reports or through text messages from their children who were inside the school. Panel approves resolution on Syria strikes
Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey testifies during a hearing on Syria before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. / GETTY IMAGES
Measure. The full Senate is expected to vote on the resolution next week. The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a resolution yesterday authorizing a limited U.S. military intervention in Syria, setting the stage for a debate in the full Senate next week on the use of military force. The compromise is more limited than President Barack Obama’s original proposal but meets the administration’s goal of punishing Syria for what the U.S. government says is the use of chemical weapons on Syrian civilians, killing more than 1,400 people. The authorization still faces significant resistance in Congress, where
many lawmakers fear it could lead to a prolonged U.S. military involvement in Syria’s civil war and spark an escalation of regional violence. Obama and administration officials have pushed Congress to act quickly, saying U.S. national security and international credibility is at stake in the decision whether to use force in Syria to punish President Bashar al-Assad’s government for chemical weapons use. “If we don’t take a stand here today, I guarantee you, we are more likely to face far greater risks to our security and a far greater likelihood of conflict that demands our action in the future,” Secretary of State John Kerry told the House Foreign Affairs Committee at a separate meeting yesterday. Evidence questioned
Putin chides US on Syria More verbal skirmishing yesterday between Moscow and Washington over U.S. plans to attack Damascus was tempered by talk of possible easing
in the East-West deadlock when President Vladimir Putin hosts world leaders at a G20 summit today. President Barack Obama said he would continue to try and persuade Putin of the need for punitive strikes on Assad.
Skeptical
Obama: US credibility on the line President Barack Obama issued a blunt challenge to skeptical U.S. lawmakers yesterday to approve his plan for a military strike on Syria, saying inaction would put America’s prestige and their own credibility at risk. Obama insisted that the world could not remain silent after the “barbarism” of the chemical weapons attack he blamed on the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. “My credibility is not on the line. The international community’s credibility is on the line,” Obama said during a news conference in Stockholm. “And America and Congress’ credibility is on the line, because [otherwise] we give lip service to the notion that these international norms are important.”

Monitors. Obama says US not snooping on ordinary people The United States does not spy on ordinary people’s mail and phone calls, President Barack Obama said yesterday, insisting that U.S. intelligence gathering was targeted at specific areas of concern. Obama has faced questions at home and abroad after Edward Snowden, a former contractor for the National Security Agency, leaked documents show-
ing the organization monitors a vast array of email and telephone data of both Americans and foreigners. “I can give assurances to the public in Europe and around the world that we are not going around snooping at people’s emails or listening to their phone calls, Obama said at a joint news conference with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt. Putin says Snowden can feel safe Russian President Vladimir Putin described NSA leaker Edward Snowden as a “strange guy but said he could rest easy that he would not be handed over to U.S.

The U.S. soldier convicted of providing secret files to WikiLeaks in the biggest breach of classified materials in the nation’s history has asked for a presidential pardon, supporters said yesterday. The request for Private Chelsea Manning, formerly known as Bradley, was filed by attorney David Coombs on Tuesday, according to a statement on the Pardon Private Manning website. “I urge you to consider this matter closely and to take a positive step towards protecting whistleblowers who release information
to the media for the public good by either reducing Private Manning’s sentence to time served, or by granting him a full pardon, Coombs said in a letter to President Barack Obama via the Justice Department and to Army Secretary John McHugh carried on the website. Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison on Aug. 21. The next day, the soldier issued a statement that said Bradley Manning was a female who wanted to live as a woman named Chelsea. REUTERS

Microsoft says most Xbox One pre-order supply is sold out Third-generation. The unit marks Microsoft’s strongest push so far to dominate consumers’ living rooms. Retail stores in many markets have run out of Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox One consoles available for preorders, a senior company executive said, ahead of a major clash with Sony’s new lower-priced PlayStation 4 this November. Microsoft’s first new gaming console in eight years will go on sale Nov. 22 in 13 countries, Yusuf Mehdi, vice president of marketing, strategy and business for the Xbox, said in an interview. That will put it one week behind the PlayStation 4 in the United States but ahead in many European countries where Sony’s first new console in seven
years is slated to go on sale on Nov. 29. “We have more preorders than any other Xbox console releases in history,” Mehdi said, adding that the company would “enable some incremental, additional units for the day one release.” The company is sticking to Nov. 22 for its U.S. launch date as it is the anniversary of the 2005 launch of the Xbox 360, which helped Microsoft take the lead in the industry. The gaming hardware industry has since lost much ground to casual gaming on smartphones and other mobile devices.

And now the “butt-grab girl” is speaking out. Lana Scolaro, 20, reveals to Life & Style that not only did she hook up with Thicke that night but she did it with his wife Paula Patton just a few feet away. “I don’t think he cared what she thought,” she says. “I was with him the whole night!” Thicke’s classic pickup line to the self-described

HBO cancels ‘True Blood’ Where do you go after you show Alexander Skarsgard naked, like “True Blood” did on this season’s finale? Answer: Nowhere — you just have to cancel the series. OK, that might not be the reason HBO pulled the plug on “True Blood,” but it might be close. (After you go full frontal, it’s hard to go back.) Michael Lombardo, the network’s president of
programming, released this statement about ending the show in 2014 after seven seasons: “‘True Blood’ has been nothing short of a defining show for HBO. Together with its legions of fans, it will be hard to say goodbye to the residents of Bon Temps, but I look forward to what promises to be a fantastic final chapter of this incredible show.”

socialite? “I just love the fact that you’re so young.” After some lipsmacking, Thicke and Patton gave Scolaro a lift to yet another party. “He turned off the lights so no one could see us, and he started making out with me. He was grabbing me. He was like, ‘I want to get you into bed!’” There were no bedroom visits, alas. The party finally broke up and they could not do the deed (with Paula Patton probably in the same room, watching HGTV). Life & Style reports that Scolaro gave Thicke her number, and he said they would hook up again during New York Fashion Week. Talking points
Cowell will not change diapers Simon Cowell is going to be just fine as a father once girlfriend Laura Silverman gives birth, thank you very much. “I think I will be a good dad, so I’m excited,” he tells the BBC. “I am good with kids because I like kids. I really do like them and I listen to them.” But that doesn’t mean Cowell plans to change any diapers. “I’m not doing that, 100 percent absolutely not going near that,” he insists.
Statham and model girlfriend take a break There might be trouble in paradise for Jason Statham and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, as the action star and the Victoria’s Secret model are reportedly taking “a break” from their three-year relationship, according to the Daily Mail. Sources say their 19-year age difference and “constant” arguing have been taking a toll. “There is no other person involved. They love each other very much and are not making an announcement because they’re still hoping to working things out,” a source says. “But things have not been good, there have been lots of arguments and they both need some space.”

Mark & Estel Back in 2005, Mark Tango and Estel Day fused their mutual love of fashion and music to launch a label that is characterized by slouchy tees, monochromes and ready-to-wear separates. Since then, their fan base has grown to include the likes of Mary-Kate Olsen, Mischa Barton and Lady Gaga — a starry following that should hopefully translate into an interesting front row at their New York Fashion Week debut. Describe the creative process in five words? Imaginative, free, open, intuitive and exhilarating. What will your front row look like? A mix of loyal fashionistas whom have worn Mark and Estel through our 12 seasons prior, press and buyers in our key global markets and stylish, influential bloggers. What can we expect from the show? We are introducing demi-sweaters, structured jackets, dresses and separates to our signature style. Our girl this season remains fearless, but she has a high-brow, classy sophistication to her.

PHILLIP LIM The designer says he’s just as passionate about creating a $29.99 shirt as he is about one for $299.
ROMANCING THE MASSES COURTESY OF TARGET
Phillip Lim believes you’re just as busy as he is. It’s why the designer — whose hotly anticipated 3.1 Phillip Lim collection for Target hits stores Sept. 15, just six days after this Spring ready-to-wear line debuts at New York Fashion Week — created an affordable fall line perfect for people on-the-go. The 100-piece offering consists of chic, understated essentials you can rely on for just about any occasion — there’s even a grab-and-go pack with underthings for those surprise last-minute trips. We nailed down Lim to talk about his design process and find out what we should choose from the collection if we only had five minutes in the store. Hey, girl’s on a schedule. Congratulations on the Target collaboration. What was your main objective for the line? For me, it was about
creating a chic, easy and cool collection for real people. I focused on the idea of a romanced reality and having ideas, products, clothes and accessories on-the-go for this romance. How would you describe the codes of the 3.1 Phillip Lim brand? 3.1 Phillip Lim is designed for the global citizen on the move with understated, elegant clothes that imbue a strong sense of discovery,

with hidden details just for the wearer. Your Target line has a strong focus on menswear. Why was it important to include the guys? Men are embracing fashion more and it was important to me that I create a collection for both men and women to easily incorporate into their wardrobes and their everyday lives.
What was the design process like? The whole process took about a year. It was a seamless experience because there was a shared goal of getting it done — and getting it done right. I worked closely with Target’s design team to make sure my imprint and aesthetic remained front and center.
The collection is full of practical-yet-cool essentials. How did you keep these pieces from being boring? When in doubt, you can never go wrong with solids. It’s important to stock up on chic basics as they cannot only be worn at different hours of the day, but also from season to season. Once that foundation was established, I sprinkled in things or ideas SATCHEL, $34.99 from my own collection.

How did you choose to bring back certain pieces from your main line, such as the comic book motif and colorblock pastels? I took inspiration from archival pieces that we thought would also be of interest to Target’s guests. All in all, designing the collection was a very similar process to that of my main collection, because in the end, I put the same amount of passion, energy, spirit and time into designing the $29.99 shirt as I would for the $299 shirt.
Do you still shop at Target? Yes, Target has just about everything. As a child, I remember Target as that place to get everything and just thinking, “They have everything here, all the dreams are here!” It’s been a busy year for you. After your show wraps, what are your plans? Hopefully I will be off on the beach somewhere!

CONSOLIDATION
It isn’t a Fashion Week if a designer isn’t celebrating a big anniversary. Prepare to hear the sound of champagne corks popping even more so than usual this Fashion Week as a whopping five major brands gear up to celebrate major firsts and even bigger milestones. CHLOE MAC DONNELL Francisco Costa,
Elie Tahari
Calvin Klein
In the early nineties, when the Brazilian born Francisco Costa was working at Oscar de la Renta, he visited a psychic who told him he would one day end up at Calvin Klein. Eerily, a decade later Klein passed the reins to Costa when he stepped down from the company. Now, another decade later Costa is celebrating his 10th anniversary with a huge single show at the as-yet-unopened 120,000-square-foot Spring Studios in Tribeca on Sept. 12. Alongside unveiling the SS/14 collection, the brand will also celebrate the global launch of its latest fragrance Downtown Calvin Klein, featuring Rooney Mara in the advertising campaign. Expect a starrierthan-usual show. Mulberry
Michael Bloomberg is fashion-friendlier than most New York City mayors (this is the guy who greenlighted
all those Fashion’s Night Out parties, after all) so it’s not that surprising that he’ll help Elie Tahari celebrate his 40th anniversary. The festivities kicked off on Sept. 4 —which Bloomberg declared Elie Tahari Day — with a ceremony at Tahari’s design centre. The legendary Joan Rivers was on hand to read a proclamation paying tribute to the Israel-born designer.
Opening Ceremony
Carol Lim and Humberto Leon don’t do things by half. Not only are they making their debut on the New York Fashion Week schedule with a standalone Opening Ceremony show featuring both womenswear and menswear on Sept. 8, they are also simultaneously hosting a pop-up market. Dubbed “Opening Ceremony BTW (by the water)” and housed in old
shipping containers on Pier 57 at the Hudson River Park, the market will play host to a series of fashion and makeup labels alongside food vendors. Highlights include DKNY Exclusively for Opening Ceremony, Rihanna for River Island, as well as an Estee Lauder pop-up salon with nail artist Naomi Yasuda. “We’re excited to see our love of food and shopping translated into a new context,” explained the designer duo. “We sought to bring together creative partners to create a fresh destination at the SuperPier with its own distinct personality for New York Fashion Week.” The endeavor launches on Sept. 5 and runs through Sept. 12.
Stella Jean
This season will see us bid farewell to Emma Hill as she unveils her final collection for Mulberry. Credited with giving the brand a muchneeded injection of coolness, she made many of us grateful for the creation of the covetable Del Rey, Willow and Alexa bags. And we’re thankful that she thrilled us with pink champagne, Max the poodle and a stellar front row each season. Check in with us later to find out what she’s up to next.
We’ve been huge fans of the Italo-Haitian designer ever since she came to our attention when she won the 2011 “Who’s on Next” initiative. And it seems we’re not alone. Giorgio Armani has requested that she show her latest collection during Milan fashion week at his private theater. “The new generation of Italian designers needs our support,” Armani explains. “It is for this
reason that I continue to make my theater on Via Bergognone available to them. Stella Jean will be the next designer to organize a fashion show at the Armani Teatro, and I hope this experience brings her luck.” Her debut at the theater will also make her the first womenswear name to present there. Born in Rome, she is best known for her graphic prints and voluminous silhouettes that fuse her Creole heritage with Italian craftsmanship. “The support of Giorgio Armani is a strong signal of confidence in emerging creativity,” Jean says. “It’s amazing. I am truly honored and deeply grateful for the opportunity that has been offered to me.”

O Canada! World cinema goes north Movies. Here are the hottest tickets at this year’s Toronto Film Festival.
Must see
‘Prisoners’ The script for this dramatic thriller made the Black List in 2009, but the film itself got held up on its way to audiences. Apparently it was worth the wait, as early responses to the film, starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, have been rapturous.
With 288 feature films screening as part of the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, it would be physically impossible to see them all. With that in mind, here are the films showing at TIFF this year that we’re most excited about. ‘Gravity’ Those who’ve already seen Alfonso Cuaron’s terrifying deep-space saga — starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as astronauts set adrift — don’t describe how good it was as much as they let their jaws drop and eyes bug out. Needless to say, we can’t wait. ‘August: Osage County’
friends beckoned back to their home town by an inheritance from one of the men’s estranged father.
Sandra Bullock hangs weightlessly in “Gravity,” playing at this year’s Toronto Film Festival. / WARNER BROS. PICTURES
The dysfunctional Broadway smash by Tracy Letts makes the jump to the big screen with an embarrassment of acting talent, bringing together Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Viola Davis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor and Chris Cooper for the most awkward of family gatherings.
‘12 Years a Slave’ “Shame” director Steve McQueen calls upon an all-star cast — including Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt and Benedict Cumberbatch — to level unspeakable cruelty at the always wonderful Chiwetel Ejiofor in this dark, searing epic about a free African-American man sold into slavery in the pre-
Civil War U.S. ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ Idris Elba takes on the South African leader’s biography in this prestige pick that should finally confirm for mainstream movie audiences what fans of “The Wire” and “Luther” have known for years: that Elba
is a force of nature. Bond’s new Moneypenny, Naomie Harris, co-stars as Winnie Mandela. ‘You Are Here’ “Mad Men” mastermind Matthew Weiner makes his feature directorial debut with this road movie featuring Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis as lifelong
‘The Double’ Richard Ayoade, who last directed the charming indie “Submarine,” offers up this bizarre feature starring Jesse Eisenberg as a man driven insane by the appearance of his doppelganger.

KATEE SACKHOFF The “Riddick” and “Battlestar Galactica” actress is happy to play sci-fi roles.
GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT GETTY IMAGES
In “Riddick,” Katee Sackhoff co-stars alongside Vin Diesel as Dahl, the only female member of a team of mercenaries — but also one of its toughest. It’s terrain Sackhoff knows well, thanks to her starmaking turn as Starbuck on “Battlestar Galactica,” and she’s more than happy to give viewers a little bit more. “Riddick” is very funny, surprisingly. My best friend is terrified of scary movies. She’s going to the pre-
miere and she was like, “How scared am I going to be?” And I was like, “Sweetie, it’s not scary. There’s some jumps and stuff, but you’re not going to be afraid of the dark when you go home.” It’s just more awesome, it’s more action in this one. There’s some great gore. You’re playing a tough female sci-fi character, which you’re a little familiar with. Do you worry about doing what you’re already known for when looking for

“It doesn’t mean that I can’t do and haven’t done things outside of it — it’s just where fans want to see me right now. You give them what they want, you know?” Sackhoff, on playing tough female sci-fi characters
parts? I think people spend too much time trying to understand this business when you can’t understand it. Truthfully, I feel blessed that people want me to do it at all, and if that’s science fiction and action,
I’d rather do that than so many other genres. So I’m good. It doesn’t mean that I can’t do and haven’t done things outside of it — it’s just where fans want to see me right now. You give them what they want, you know?
There’s been this massive shift in quality on television and how seriously it’s taken. Do you like to take some credit for that with “Battlestar Galactica”? I think that if you’re going to say “The Sopranos” changed television, you’ve got to put “Battlestar Galactica” in with it. They were on television at the exact same time, and they were both breaking barriers down on different networks and in different genres and for different audiences.
It’s been so long, I almost don’t feel like I was a part of it anymore. I don’t think I could go back and play Starbuck again. I don’t think I would know how to. There was an intensity in her vulnerability that she was trying desperately not to show people, and I don’t think that I have that anymore. That was a piece of me in my 20s that just isn’t there anymore.

DATING
28
IT’S TRICKY IF YOU’RE TOO PICKY A friend of mine perfectly summarized today’s dating scene by describing a girl whom he met online: “A few years ago I would have dated her for a while to see where it went. But now, when I’m online and there are hundreds of other girls who are cute and seem interesting, I’d rather know what else is out there.” This onto-the-nextone attitude — that can characterize many peoples’ dating strategies — makes it nearly impossible to find someone. It’s dating the same way that compulsive gamblers play the slots: putting in the quarters and pulling the levers without taking any time to acknowledge what’s actually falling out of the machine. We jump from one to the next so fast that we’re never really present in the date we’re on. The second that something rubs us the wrong way, we check out and decide “there’s something better out there.” The paradox here is that our perception of
Turning up your nose at people without really getting to know them will only make the dating world more complicated. / THINKSTOCK
having so many options actually leaves us with none — because it’s made us so picky that no one stands a chance. As a dater, it’s good to be discerning. But it’s bad to be picky. By literal definition, discerning means “to perceive with eyes or intellect,” i.e., to have some insight about the person in front of you. You should really think about their personality traits, values and how much you enjoy being in their company. What you
shouldn’t do is be fussy and particular about tiny facets of who they are: a lame comment they made, a hairstyle you don’t love or how objectively attractive you believe them to be. What really counts is the full picture, and it takes awhile to get that. You don’t have to like everything about someone in order to have a successful relationship with the person. Some things you may learn to accept over time, and
others you may just choose to ignore. Either way, the tiny reasons we often cite for discarding a date usually aren’t actual relationship deal breakers down the line. Would you blow off a guy at a bar because he had a popped collar? Probably. But if your boyfriend walked out with his collar flying you’d simply say, “Don’t do that honey; you look like a d-bag.” And then live happily ever after.

The Tao of John Villa Hot chef. Though locals may view Tao as “a factory,” its chef wants to convince you otherwise. John Villa is the executive chef at Tao, the city’s highest grossing restaurant. Read on to learn how this Italian-trained cook — who counts Daniel Boulud and Ruth Reichl as fans — ended up whipping up Peking duck every night. You hit it big right after culinary school. In a highly competitive New York restaurant scene, what’s that like? There’s a lot of competition among restaurants. Chefs in general are competitive with each other, but we want others to succeed. Everyone wants everyone to be busy. We’re more competing with ourselves to do better. Who pushes you as a chef? At Tao, the owners know what they want. If something is not right, in a positive way they tell you that you can do better or you can do more. Our goal is always to make the guest experience as good as it can. We really stress that, from the dishwashers to the top. Every day, you come in thinking about what you can do better for the company and the guest. I’m constantly pushing myself, but if you don’t have support like that you could fall into a lull.
Visit John Villa at Tao (42 E. 58th St., 212-888-2288). / PROVIDED
Who has influenced your career? My brother was a chef. He got me in the business. My parents always went out to eat, and I loved being out in restaurants, so that gave me the love of restaurants. And my brother showed me behind the scenes. I realized later on that a lot of my inspiration came from my Italian grandparents. My love of food came from them. They made their own pasta and canned their own tomatoes. How did you go from your background in Italian cooking to becoming executive chef at an Asian restaurant? In New York, you really see a lot of everything. You’re not pigeonholed
into one thing. Growing up with Italian food and knowing it so well, I didn’t really want to cook Italian. Coming up in New York, I worked with chefs that used a lot of Japanese ingredients. It just grew from there. What separates a chef in New York from a chef in other cities? I don’t realize until I leave the city how everything moves very fast in New York. There’s always something going on. We never let down. We’re busy from the minute we open to the minute we close. You really can’t slow down.

What dish matches the style you want to convey for the restaurant? Peking duck. It’s sharable, but it’s also a technical process to make that duck.
I think we do it as good as anybody. It’s a certain way you have to make that, and you have to be really skilled. People look at us like we’re a factory, but you eat that duck and realize
it’s some of the best Peking duck you’ll have in the country. That’s what Tao’s about. You’ll have a great time when you’re there, and you realize the food is as good as can be.

Exercise isn’t A reaction a bad thing worth a thousand Re: ‘Is a guy in your life tsks “bigorexic?”’ (Metro, Sept. 4) As if this country of overweight, obese and unconditioned skinny people need more reasons to sit on their couches. Less than 3 percent of adults in this country get the required exercise, the bar on which is set so woefully low that you can literally meet it by walking behind a selfpropelled lawn mower to cut a large lawn once per week. Bodybuilding is just resistance training with changing caloric intakes, increased caloric intake while trying to gain muscle and decreased caloric intake to lose fat. Here’s an idea: Instead of turning a nation of unfit people off to exercise, direct them to get on their “S”s. The human animal needs to train to have strength, speed, stamina, suppleness and skill in a particular sporting endeavor. If you exercise properly, eat properly and rest properly, your body will reflect your lifestyle. DAVID E. MAPP, VIA EMAIL
Re: ‘A picture’s only worth a thousand English words’ (Metro, Sept. 4) Surprise, surprise. One Spanishwritten page threatens the entire hierarchy of white monolingual America. God forbid we read a language spoken by approximately 37 million people in the U.S. Metro is a free newspaper distributed throughout the city. It should be inclusive of the community it serves. It’s a huge shame that seeing one page of the Metro newspaper in Spanish caused such an uproar. Seeing one page of the daily newspaper should not threaten your way of life. It IS everyday life in this city. JANETTE CHIEN, VIA EMAIL

NEW YEAR, NEW REX Idzik on Ryan
Idzik knows only ‘one Rex’ Even as the two have been pinned as polar opposites, Idzik says he’s behind Ryan. “I only know one Rex,” he said. “He’s done an outstanding job in some of the things we’ve had to go through in the offseason, preseason, leading up to this game.”

Jets season preview. John Idzik has brought a new image to the Jets, and a quieter Ryan. Rex Ryan has changed, the Jets head coach admitted on Monday, but though the once-outlandish coach
has become a company man, his desire to win is still very much there. Once one of the most entertaining press conferences in the league, Ryan dazzled the Jets with oneliners and preposterously bold statements, including twice predicting his team would make the Super Bowl. Jets season preview. Geno Smith named starter for Week 1 The worst-kept secret in the NFL became official yesterday morning when the Jets officially announced rookie quarterback Geno Smith is the starter for Week 1. A shoulder injury to incumbent starter Mark Sanchez after he was inserted into the fourth quarter of the third preseason game gifted Smith the starting job by default. “The competition from my understanding is still going. We’re going to compete. That’s what practice is about, that’s what being an athlete is about, Smith said. “That’s the way you get better, by competing every single day. And that’s something I try to do and compete with myself. I try to chase perfection. As far as the status of Sanchez, the fifth-year quarterback and former first-round pick, nothing

is certain about his right shoulder. He was unable to practice last week and has yet to do so this week, certainly casting doubt on his availability for the Week 2 game at the Patriots. “When you look at it, clearly with Mark’s injury, the fact that he’s not able to go and things, that factors into any decision, Ryan said. “But we’re very comfortable with Geno. KRISTIAN DYER

2013 Giants schedule
Giants season preview
Defense expects big turnaround The Giants were, statistically speaking, one of the worst defenses last season, finishing 31st out of the 32 teams. But according to loquacious safety Antrel Rolle, Big Blue will field one of the
best units this season. “Absolutely we can be dominant, [because] we have all the pieces to be dominant,” said Rolle. “If we’re not dominant, then it’s an extreme failure on our part.” Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell’s game plan is designed to allow his players to be in the position to make impact
plays. “The groundwork is easy. The blueprint is easy. We know what it takes,” Justin Tuck said. “We just have to do our part, and that starts with hopefully staying healthy, but also having the mind-set that every time we come out here to work, we have to go to work.” TONY WILLIAMS
The Giants open with a tough back-to-back, but get a respite in the AFC West. •

David Wilson led the Giants in the preseason with 179 rushing yards. / GETTY IMAGES
Wilson will shoulder load Giants season preview. The second-year back is ready to step up. When he Giants got down to their 53-man roster last weekend, a few question marks surrounded the running back position. Andre Brown, who was listed as the “1B” starting running back, went down with a fractured leg for the second straight season, which means more of the burden will rest on David Wilson. “Obviously, when you lose a running back, a guy who’s going to play a decent amount, it’s tough,
but David has had a good preseason,” said Eli Manning. Wilson, who has blazing speed and breakaway capability, still needs to work on pass protection. And while that may be his biggest weakness, the diminutive back (5-foot-9, 205 pounds) said his shoulders are broad enough to shoulder the load. “Don’t get confused by my size, I’m a physical guy,” said Wilson. “I’m from the country, so I grew up chopping wood and building houses with my dad. ... I’m well put together.”
