Quinn gets back to work after electoral defeat First lady. The City Council speaker talked about her mayoral loss and coming legislation. With resigned tranquility, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn got back to work Thursday after a crushing defeat in the mayoral election. Quinn received just

15.5 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary Tuesday, with 99 percent of precincts reporting. As her reign over the council ends, Quinn said New Yorkers can expect a “ton of legislation” between now and Dec. 31. Legislative priorities will be organized with other members, but that work has yet to be done. “You can imagine I wasn’t doing a ton of that yesterday,” Quinn said. Before making the re-

In a passionate appeal, Quinn said any suggestions New York wasn’t ready for a women to run City Hall were untrue. “There will be an amazing day where history gets made in this city and it will raise all of us higher,” she

said. “It hasn’t happened yet, but we are a city that is not only capable of anything, we’ll eventually accomplish everything.” Back at work — for now — Quinn said she wasn’t sure what her next steps would be. “There’ll be another chapter, but I haven’t started to write it yet,” Quinn said simply.

De Blasio gets big backing after election Vote. With only a brief respite, Bill de Blasio’s campaign for mayor started up again at full speed Thursday.

Changing tide Dozens of progressive groups and individuals came out to Brooklyn Borough Hall to announce they were backing Bill de Blasio for mayor. •

At a midday rally in front of Brooklyn Borough Hall, dozens of progressive groups and leaders packed in on the steps behind a triumphant de Blasio. “If you want to see what victory looks like, just look around me,” de Blasio declared, before reeling off a list of the new endorsers crowded in behind him. Among them were several former endorsers of Christine Quinn, including some who not too long ago had harsh words for de Blasio. Hector Figueroa of 32BJ SEIU at a press conference just a few weeks ago touted Quinn as “an effective progressive,” not a “rhetorical progressive,” in a jab at de Blasio. After the rally on Wednesday Figueroa acknowledged the change of heart, and noted that all along, the Democratic ticket was crowded with

In a stirring speech at 7 World Trade Center, Mayor Michael Bloomberg spoke about the recovery and resiliency of the city, declaring, “post-9/11 uncertainty is over.” Speaking at an event hosted by the Downtown Alliance, Bloomberg pointed to the city’s progress in rebuilding the sense of normalcy after the attacks 12 years ago. “The overwhelming sense of anxiety that

Best-selling “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling will return to the wizarding world for her screenplay debut inspired by one of her fictional boy wizard’s textbooks. Rowling will write the screenplay for “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” a film from Warner Bros. based on the adventures of Newt Scamander — the fictional author of a Hogwarts textbook of the same name. “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” will be the first in a series of films about the adventures of Scamander and will be familiar to anyone

who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, Rowling said. But the story will start in New York City, 70 years before the Potter tale. “Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” she said. Police seek armored truck thief in Bronx

Thief sought in four bank robberies

Police are searching for a man they say stole a sack of cash from an armored truck in the Bronx. The suspect entered the unoccupied Rapid Armored Corporation truck shortly before 6 p.m. on July 30, as it sat idling near East Fordham and East Kingsbridge Roads, police said. Surveillance video depicts the man as he stuffs a bag full of the money inside the truck and then runs toward a silver vehicle waiting for him. Police were also investigating an armored truck heist in Brooklyn last month. On Aug. 22, the suspect hijacked an armored truck from the same company and made off with $500,000.

Police are on the hunt for a bandit who robbed four Manhattan banks in a week. The suspect first struck an HSBC bank located at Seventh Avenue and 39th Street on Sept. 3, police said. He approached a teller about 9:30 a.m., passed a demand note and fled with cash. In the most recent incident, the man robbed a woman who was making a deposit inside American Express on Park Avenue near 53rd Street. The suspect said he was armed in several of the robberies. He is described as being between 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-6, and 160 lbs. He is bald but wore a wig during the first robbery and baseball caps in the other incidents.

NYC Opera launches Kickstarter campaign Last-ditch. The NYC Opera is trying to raise funds to keep from suspending their season. If the New York City Opera doesn’t get $7 million by the end of the month, its current season will be suspended. In a last-ditch appeal, the opera launched a fundraising campaign on Kickstarter this week, hoping to scrounge up $1 million in donations. “We have always been an opera about a large audience, it makes sense to have a campaign everyone around the world can participate in — anyone no matter their economic background can contribute just a dollar,” said George Steel, general manager and artistic director.

Analysis

Opera under pressure

When it was founded 70 years ago, then-Mayor Fiorello La Guardia called the New York City Opera the “People’s Opera.” Like that notion, Steel said the Kickstarter campaign also reflects the opera’s efforts to move toward

the future. “Embracing the Internet as a way to encourage donations to save the opera makes sense,” he said.

ANNA SANDERS

Despite tremendous fundraising difficulties ahead, the opera managed to secure enough cash to put forth “Anna Nicole,” which could very well be its final production. Co-produced with BAM, “Anna Nicole” is both a comedy and tragedy about the life and death of the model and actress. It runs Sept. 17 to 28. In addition to the $7 million needed to save this season, the opera needs an additional $13 million before the end of year to fund future seasons.

TOM FOREMAN POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT FOR CNN

A NOTE TO OUR RUSSIAN PEN PAL Dear President Putin, Thanks for your recent open letter to America regarding Syria. As you know, our plans for possibly visiting your old pal, Bashar al-Assad, are somewhat up in the air, so please tell him not to hold dinner. I was intrigued by your thoughts on how it can be unwise for big military powers to start throwing their missiles around without the U.N.’s blessing. I assume you are speaking from experience. Ha! Don’t spill your borsch; I’m just ribbing you. But in the spirit of offering friendly advice and a little quid pro quo, here are some ideas that you might find useful when you’re hanging out in Red Square. For starters, what’s with taking your shirt off all the time? You’re a handsome guy (in a sort of former-KGB way) but it seems a tad creepy. Kind

Just look at these guns!” I don’t want to take away all your fun, but maybe you could wean yourself from the practice with … oh, I don’t know… maybe some sort of mesh tank top? Second, how about burying Lenin? I realize he is an important figure in your country’s past, and when I was in Moscow some years ago I eagerly made the trek to

his tomb. And it was honestly fascinating to see him propped up inside that glass box. But while it’s all well and good to turn historical sites into tourist attractions, doing so with historical figures goes a bit too far. And lastly … how do I say this nicely? Maybe you could go a little easier on the offering of unsolicited advice, especially that part about telling Americans that their country is not exceptional. I get your point: We’re all human beings, all created equal, yadda yadda yadda. But in that very sense, no one likes hearing that he or she is not special. And when those words come from a bare-chested Russian with his own history of international meddling, it’s even worse. Just a few ideas. Regards, Tom

Pope Francis to drive his own ‘popemobile’ inside Vatican City

Allegations

Vatican to cooperate in pedophilia case The Vatican said on Sept. 12 it would cooperate with Dominican Republic authorities investigating the Holy See’s former ambassador on suspicion of pedophilia and denied the envoy had been recalled to protect him from local justice. Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski, 55, was recalled in August and relieved of his duties after local media accused him of sexual abuse of children. In the first formal statement on the case, the Vatican said its sex crimes prosecutor had opened an investigation into the allegations. Cardinal Nicolas Lopez Rodriguez, of Santo Domingo, personally informed Pope Francis in late July that there had been “serious accusations” against Wesolowski, a Vatican spokesman said. REUTERS

Holy wheels. The pope knows how to drive it because he had a Renault 4 in Argentina. Pope Francis plans to drive around Vatican City at the wheel of a “popemobile” that is a lot like him: frugal, clad in white and with a fair bit of mileage. The 1984 Renault 4 economy car with 186,000 miles on the odometer was given to him by a 70-yearold priest from northern Italy, Father Renzo Zocca, who took the pope for a spin inside the walls of the tiny city-state. “I think the pope will drive it a bit himself inside the Vatican,” the Holy See’s deputy spokesman, Father Ciro Benedettini, said on Sept. 12. pealed to priests several months ago not to drive expensive cars but to save money and give it to the

poor, Zocca wrote him a letter saying he had used the same car for decades and wanted to give it to the pope as a symbolic gift. The pope, 76, then got in and drove it, Zocca told the Italian Catholic magazine Famiglia Cristiana (Christian Family). Francis, who, as a cardinal in Buenos Aires, traveled by subway, has shown a predilection for simple

means of transport even after his election in March as the first non-European pope in 1,300 years. On the night of his election, he shunned the bulletproof papal Mercedes limousine and rode in a minibus with the cardinals who had chosen him to lead the Roman Catholic church. During his trip to Brazil in July, he was driven

around Rio de Janeiro in a small silver Fiat at his own request, and when he visited a refugee center in Rome on Sept. 10, he used a Ford Focus from the Vatican’s car pool. Francis has shunned the spacious and luxurious papal apartments used by his predecessors, opting to live in a small suite in a Vatican guesthouse. REUTERS

Report: Hamas is training Egyptian Islamists The Hamas Islamist group ruling Gaza has been teaching Egyptian Islamists how to plant bombs in cars, Egyptian state television said on Sept. 12.

Hamas also gave 400 land mines to Egyptian militant groups, state television said. Hamas is an offshoot of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood. The Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi was overthrown as Egyptian president by the military in July following mass protests. REUTERS

A U.S.-born Islamist militant on Washington’s most wanted list was killed in a gun battle in Somalia on Sept. 12, witnesses said, after he fell out with the al Shabaab rebel group’s top commander. Residents in al Baate village in southern Somalia said Alabama-born Omar Hammami, commonly known as Abu Mansoor al-Amriki or “The American,” and a British national known as Usama al-Britani were shot dead in a dawn raid on their hideout. Hammami’s killing exposed the rifts in al Shabaab’s ranks as the group affiliated to al-Qaida grapples with an African Union-

led military offensive that has captured key cities from the militants, depriving them of revenues. “This morning al-Amriki and his comrades were attacked by well-armed fighters,” said village resident Hussein Nur. “After a brief fight, al-Amriki and his two colleagues were killed. Several of their guards escaped.” A shopkeeper from the rebel-controlled village heard al Shabaab fighters confirm the deaths, and said the militants had closed off the area where Hammami was gunned down. REUTERS ‘The American’

Hammami’s father, Shafik Hammami, of Daphne, Ala., told Reuters he learned of his son’s death when he woke up to read the news online.

CULTURE

Cohorts

On Karl “Derek” includes a meaty role for Karl Pilkington, the lowly radio producer Gervais turned into a celebrity when he made him the centerpiece — and often focus of ridicule — on his groundbreaking podcast, “The Ricky Gervais Show.” He plays Dougie, a longtime worker with a terrible hairdo who’s the smartest, most self-aware character on the show — and as such, often miserable. “I wrote it for Karl,” Gervais says, “because I wanted to bring out that grumpy misanthrope in him. In fact, after I filmed it I told Karl that Dougie was based on him if he had never met me. And that really annoyed him.” Then Gervais chuckles.

Ricky Gervais plays the titular character on “Derek,” a “slow” caretaker at a nursing home who really likes animals. / NETFLIX

Ricky Gervais gets to be (half) serious Netflix show. “Derek” finds the comic in a sincere, kind mode — but he’s still very funny. Ricky Gervais is a jolly man. He’s also a serious man. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. His comedy comes from a place of seriousness. It’s no accident that his best-known creation, “The Office,” is a mock-documentary. His latest show, “Derek,” also adopts a mockdoc approach. But it’s markedly different. It’s a comedy-drama, centered on Gervais’ title character: a “slow” type (certainly autistic, although he’s undiagnosed) who works at a nursing home. “It is more sincere,” Gervais says. “I’ve left behind the veil of irony that inhabits most of my other works. That’s what makes it more dramatic. There’s this sincerity in the characters.” Derek himself is not David Brent (or even “Extras”’ more together, though still troubled Andy Millman). “We’re not laughing at the difference between how [the characters] see

themselves and how we see them,” Gervais says. “I got addicted to the sweetness and the kindness. I wanted it to be infectious. When [Derek] walks through the door, you’re infected by kindness.” What it most shares with his past work is an interest in nobodies. “It’s about forgotten people and people on the fringes of society. I’ve always been fascinated by them. It’s also nice to return to ordinary people. In recent years I’ve done a lot of studies of fame and Hollywood,” he says, citing “Extras,” “Life’s Too Short,” even a stand-up special called “Fame.” The character of Derek even originated — pre-“The Office,” in fact — as part of a group of outsiders who would brush up against famous people. He decided to make him “do something worthy” instead. He chose a care home because many of the women in his family worked

in them. He had 30 years of stories, some of which made it into the show. He based a character named Hannah on these women. “I wanted her to be strong and caring, like all the womenfolk I knew growing up in my family,” Gervais says. “They were very sentimental and they loved kids and animals. But they also had to be lionesses.” The show isn’t entirely serious, or even half-serious. It’s very often hilarious. “I think that if you’re dealing with something that’s real, it can go from comedy to drama, then back again,” he says. “Real life does that. Comedy is real life with the boring bits taken out.” Gervais wasn’t sure it would take with audiences. “I worried if people would accept it — if they were laughing at these weirdo characters, then have to take them seriously when they’re crying,” he says. “If you set that out as the

possibility from the outset, then you’ve earned it. And you have to earn it. You can’t just have outrageously broad, silly characters doing ridiculous things all the time, then expect us to care about them.” The show’s shuffling between tones can sometimes be alarming; it goes a bit too far one way with a montage set, sans irony, to Coldplay. (Chris Martin gave a hilarious self-deprecating cameo on “Extras.”) But he sees a change happening in the culture. “I think people don’t know they want it, but they do want sincerity,” he postulates. “I’ve noticed it on Twitter as well. I can do snarky stuff, weird stuff, and it gets retweets. But if I do a sincere tweet, that’s right down the line, it connects with 10 times the amount of people.” He was still worried about audience reactions. “You are always aware that [this show] is a challenge to the audience. But it should be,” he says. “I don’t want the audience to be that comfortable. I want things to worry them. I want them to think about it.”

Ricky Gervais returns to TV — or at least Netflix. GETTY IMAGES

Streaming is the thing “Derek” debuted on Netflix. (All seven 25-minute episodes were made available Thursday.) Gervais always intended the streaming giant as his home. “I heard a whispering of the industry that some cable networks were getting worried about this new kid on the block called Netflix. That excited me,” Gervais says with his trademark giggle. He emailed the head of Netflix, saying he wanted to make a show. He got a quick reply with a go. “TV habits have changed so much in the last 10 to 15 years,” he explains. “There’s a generation of kids who don’t understand this concept of the common consciousness — of sitting down at 9 on a Thursday with the family. ‘I don’t have to watch it then; I can watch it on the way to the store tomorrow.’”

TV premieres: The newbies The idiot box. Networks have a whole new rash of shows this autumn, many of which will never be heard from again.

‘Dads’ This show hasn’t even aired yet and it’s already getting a lot of flack for being offensive — but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. This Seth MacFarlane show stars Seth Green (whose choice in mostly stinker roles is a little offensive) and Giovanni Ribisi as business partners whose old pops return to mess with their lives. Sept. 17, 8 p.m., Fox

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’

‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

If “Brooklyn DA” wasn’t enough to keep your Kings County heart happy, here’s another cop show — a bit funnier, we hope — about the goings-on in America’s hippest borough. Andy Samberg stars. Sept. 17, 8:30 p.m., Fox

Because there are evidently not enough Marvel’s Avengers — while there are genuinely not enough of the British Avengers — the rag-tag team of bickering superhuman do-gooders invades your TV, too. Actually, it’s just the all-too-human agents, including Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson. Sept. 24, 8 p.m., ABC

‘Hostages’ Because television is now largely single stories that never end, this drama takes a movie plot — Toni Collette is kidnapped by a rogue fed (Dylan McDermott) and forced to try and kill the president — and will somehow stretch that over untold seasons. Sept. 23, 10 p.m., CBS

‘The Crazy Ones’ Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar are back on TV as father-daughter ad execs. It’s like “Mad Men,” except you probably won’t want to cry into your Scotch afterward. Sept. 26, 9 p.m., CBS

James Spader returns to TV as a baddie hero in “The Blacklist.” / DAVID GIESBRECHT, NBC Must see

‘The Blacklist’ Holy crap, James Spader’s 53 (but slightly less doughy)! The professional creep is happily enjoying a resurgence, playing the villain in the next “Avengers” movie, and returning to TV as a criminal who plays rat to the feds — but possibly for his own agenda. Sept. 23, 10 p.m., NBC

‘Masters of Sex’ Biopics are always too short to capably encapsulate full, messy lives, so hopefully this show about pioneering sex researchers Masters and Johnson — respectively, William (Michael Sheen) and Virginia (Lizzy Caplan) — will fare better than “Kinsey.” Also, hey, it’s Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan (and Beau Bridges and Alison Janney)!

Sept. 29, 10 p.m., Showtime

‘Super Fun Night’ ABC is betting big bucks on this Rebel Wilsonstarring comedy. (It’s got a cushy slot right after “Modern Family.”) Wilson plays a lawyer whose weekly girls night gets thrown for a loop when she gets promoted. Oct. 2, 9:30 p.m., ABC ALEXANDRA CAVALLO, MEREDITH ENGEL AND MATT PRIGGE

Two steps forward, one step back Horror sequel. The good will James Wan amassed after “The Conjuringâ€? lasted about two months. Starting with “Insidiousâ€? and continuing with this July’s “The Conjuring,â€? director James Wan has been honing his craft, reviving a dormant sub-genre — the haunted house picture — and bringing back oldschool, wholly analogue frights. There are no digital effects in either film — just prowling camerawork, creaking floorboards, practical effects ‌ and the occasional, unfortunate “boo.â€? “Insidious: Chapter 2â€? takes the series in the wrong direction: from simple ghost movie to deep, borderline impenetrable mythology. This time, it’s Dad (Patrick Wilson) who’s troubled. At the end of the first, he seemed to be possessed by a homicidal demon, who strangled the token creepy psychic hero (Lin Shaye). More important, it doesn’t — like “The Conjuring — give Wan much chance to show off. He’s too busy with plot to really dig into scenes. It assumes what we want is a deeper understanding (superficially speaking) of its world. What we need is more chances to gnaw on our nails. Perhaps that will be “Chapter 3, leaving this the traditional doughy middle in the franchise.

Ralph Lauren ends Fash DAY 7 1:25 p.m. Rachel Zoe

It’s no secret that Rachel Zoe loves the ‘70s. For the past few seasons the stylistturned-designer has served up a replica of her personal wardrobe on the runway. But for spring you can forget about bell-bottoms and floppy hats — well, sort of. This collection is more modern and sophisticated, and much less retro. And while the designer hit all the season’s obligatory trends, her standouts were the timeless denim pieces, including low-slung distressed cutoffs paired with a crisp white shirt under a white moto that married the model-off-duty sentiment with Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy elegance. And for the loyalists: A black and white bohemian kaftan closed the show. TINA CHADHA

2 p.m. J. Mendel Higher hemlines are officially a trend, which feels kind of early considering that the fashion pendulum was just swinging the opposite way last season. The flirty miniskirts and dresses I’ve been seeing this week are the antithesis of the full, mid-century midi skirt that is dominating fall. J. Mendel’s collection is full of sweet, upbeat, leggy dresses and shorts that stop just short of girly. He calls it “gamine chic.” They come in a range of pastels, feminine prints and brocades and seem tailored for celebutantes and the ladies-wholunch set. KENYA HUNT MILLY GETTY IMAGES

3:15 p.m. Milly pre-show I’m in my seat waiting for Milly to begin and to my right is an empty spot. Since it’s a few minutes to the start of the show, two girls squeeze into the place, making our whole row crammed and uncomfortable. The girl sitting to my left has straight up taken her shoes off and is rubbing her bare feet on the carpet. Get me out of here. TC

3:25 p.m. Milly Milly’s spring show can be described in one word: mesh. OK, fine, I’ll expand. Designer Michelle Smith sent out netted seethrough bustier dresses over high-waist hot pants that either looked sporty (paired with bomber jackets) or sexy-secretary (throw on cat-eye glasses and a ladylike handbag). I’m all for designers trying something new, but the strong color palette (mostly black with neon pops), bomber jackets, hoodies and leather cropped overalls felt like an aggressive play for downtown recognition. Combine that with all the bare skin and you get a distinct American Apparel vibe. According to show notes, Smith drew inspiration from the perforated facades of buildings she saw in a recent trip to Tokyo. Her best takeaway from that holiday, however, were the striking prints based on Japanese florals that covered midi

skirts and stretch dresses. Those were cool without trying too hard. TC

5 p.m. Hanging with DKNY girls OK, logos are officially a thing too. I’m having drinks with the ladies of Donna Karan and DKNY — including the social media queen behind DKNY PR Girl, the brand’s VP of Global Communications Aliza Licht — and it’s turned into a fun girls’ gossip session. After trading war stories from this week’s runway trenches, we talk about Rita Ora,

J. Mendel / BFANYC

who closed out DKNY’s 25th anniversary show in n a look emblazoned with DKNY logos. I have the feeling we’ll be seeing even more of this once London Fashion Week begins on Friday. KH

5:10 p.m. Marchesa pre-show I’m waiting for Marchesaa to start when the woman n sitting behind me informs ms me that there’s a butterfly fly sitting on my T-shirt. Now, w, had it been any other bug, g, I would be bouncing into o

anous silk. The opening series of dresses — such as a dusty blue gown with colorful floral embroidery and cascading train — worked best and are feminine without being too princess-y. The fluffy organza petal skirt and coat, however, are a harder sell. TC

patent Mary Janes. It’s the youngest-looking offering we’ve seen from Lauren in years. This collection isn’t glamorous in a traditional way — instead it exudes a British sense of cool. But let’s get down to what the clothes will mean for you. Coming on the last day of New York Fashion Week, Lauren’s collection underscores the return of the miniskirt. Lore has it that hemlines rise with stock prices. And while Wall Street is climbing, the economy still looks uncertain as a war potentially looms in Syria. So it remains to be seen how the trend factors into what’s happening in the world culturally, but the upbeat energy radiating from the clothes is palpable, reminding us that when CNN headlines grow increasingly depressing by the hour, we can always escape through a beautifully made dress. KH

5:20 p.m. Marchesa It turns out my fluttery friend is the perfect accessory for Marchesa’s spring show, which is full of bohemian embellishments: lace butterflies, hand-painted flower appliques and dip-dyed feather plumes. Gone are the dramatic structured ball gowns of last season, and in their place Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig are sending out more wearable red-carpet heartbreakers in shimmering embroidered lace and sensual diaph-

10 a.m. Ralph Lauren pre-show The space where Ralph Lauren’s show is being held smells like lilies. Each season, an enormous floral arrangement the size of a medium treetop sits at the main entrance.

Who would have guessed that Ralph would revisit the Mod ‘60s? It turns out the blackand-white was foreshadowing for the opening series of looks: a set of A-line double-face knit dresses, graphic separates and slick trouser suits in Mod-inspired shapes and a monochromatic color palette. Next comes saturated blues, reds and purples, nearly every look worn with the coolest

Dion Lee / GETTY IMAGES

We take a look at collections from two young brands receiving a lot of buzz this season. Australian designer Dion Lee, known for his masterful construction, started his show with full-sleeve body-hugging looks in all black wool with patentleather details that felt inappropriate for spring — but that was the point. Lee’s collection was “seasonally irrelevant,” according to show notes. He focused his line on all four seasons. The results were his signature sliced, sexy separates in fabrics fit for just about any climate. Whether or not you can squeeze into one of them is another question.

Brooklyn native Rosie Assoulin — who previously interned at Oscar de la Renta and Lanvin, and not to mention received personal design lessons from her mother-inlaw, Lee Angel jewelry designer, Roxanne Assoulin — ROSIE showed a strong collection of polished lean separates, ASSOULIN dramatic volume and satiny eveningwear. Standout looks include: billowing wide-leg trousers adorned with colorful grommets, a floor-length tuxedo coat in punchy coral and a striped T-shirt gown. TINA CHADHA

Califone alone In his most recent press photos, Califone’s Tim Rutili appears alone. His former core of backing musicians have moved on, but Califone’s rustic and ramshackle sound remains very much unchanged. “We haven’t played together in a long time,” notes Rutili. “Those guys joined Iron and Wine so they could start making some money.” “Stitches,” Califone’s seventh studio recording, released earlier this month on Dead Oceans, brings Rutili back to a more solitary state of songwriting. Leaving the familiar confines of his Chicago studio for the first time, Califone’s founder wrote and recorded his new collection of songs on the road and fleshed them out with various friends and co-conspirators along the way in California, Arizona and Texas. “It was a new way of doing things, and you

can’t help but have the way those places look and feel leak into the music.” Gathering source material on his phone, Rutili turned to his field recordings to create a patchwork of sound collages and musical mosaics to help fill the void left by his veteran collaborators. “The record was called ‘Stitches’ when it first started,” says Rutili. “And that name stuck. It was like making a big quilt to me.” NOLAN GAWRON

Stateside success. The British band is riding “An Awesome Wave” of popularity now, but they just want you to stop being so “coupley” at their gigs. When Alt-J’s Gus UngerHamilton looks out into the crowd at an American gig, it’s not the scores of glowing iPhones that he finds himself distracted by. It’s how “coupley it is.” That, says the eccentric, self-described “awkward” British band’s keyboardist, is the biggest difference between their fanbase here in America and back home. More specifically, it’s all of the couples making out. “Oh God, it happens the whole time, and it always happens during the same songs,” he laughs. “It happens in ‘Matilda’ and it happens in ‘Taro.’”

Alt-J’s Unger-Hamilton, second from right, says they’re “too awkward” to be truly crazy showmen. / NOAH KALINA

He notes that their U.S. audiences also tend to be people whose tastes he’d imagine to be more mainstream than in the U.K., where the quartet are perceived as a more alternative band. But it’s the mating rituals of his American fans that he’s most amused by. “It’s also hilarious watching guys dancing with their girlfriends but making it super obvious that, you know, this is their

girlfriend,” he says. “They always stand behind them and don’t let anybody, especially the band, probably, think for one moment that this girl is single. It’s very funny to watch because the guys are always looking so awkward, trying to come up with dance moves to encircle their girlfriends.” If it sounds like he’s being a jerk, he’s not. Softspoken and slightly meditative, Unger-Hamilton’s not a rock star out to poach

anyone’s girlfriend, and it seems like he’s merely bemused by it all — not the least their sudden success. Alt-J have gone from playing shows in their offcampus house at Leeds to headlining 5,000-personcapacity arenas, in significantly less time than it takes most bands of their ilk. But, if they should be worried about following up such an impressive debut record, or if they should be intimidated by the specter of the sophomore album flop — they’re not. “We know we’re not going to put out a substandard second album,” UngerHamilton says. “It’s only going to be when we’ve made a record we’re really happy with, so in that sense, I’m not worried because I know we wouldn’t put out something that we didn’t think was good enough.”

GMOs ruin everything Re: ‘A genetically modified Vampire? No thanks’ (Metro, Sept. 12) Thank you for highlighting the lie that is GMO food. Every European knows that the mainstream foods in the U.S. are inferior. In the same vein, most candy bars that you and your kids eat have preservatives, artificial colors, artificial flavors and bad chocolate made from sour milk. The same bars made in Europe have natural colors, natural flavors and really good chocolate. Why? Because manufacturers treat the American customer base with contempt. BRIAN BECK, VIA EMAIL

No, they don’t Re: ‘A genetically modified Vampire? No thanks’ (Metro, Sept. 12) Rostam Batmanglij’s complaints about modern food, though perhaps well-inten-

tioned, are unfortunately based on serious misinformation. He complains apples are bigger and more attractive but lack taste. He blames this, ultimately, on GMOs. Nothing could be further from the truth. As far back as 1972, long before genetic engineering was possible, I had bought an apple — huge and beautiful — and about as flavorful as a raw potato. Quite simply, the breeders were going for appearance, where they succeeded, and didn’t worry about taste. I would venture to say that were the apple a GMO, it would be as flavorful as nature intended. As for Europe? They didn’t allow U.S.-grown GMOs until they developed their own. That, of course, is another story. STEVE MILLER, VIA EMAIL

Giants defense prepares for Peyton The main storyline for Sunday’s matchup between the Giants and Broncos will undoubtedly be the “Manning Bowl, but for the players in blue and white, all they’re concerned about is not falling to 0-2. Peyton Manning vs. younger brother Eli

Manning is a fun national story, but for Big Blue and their backers, they have their own concerns — namely slowing down a Broncos team which ran up 49 points on the defending Super Bowl champion Ravens last week in the opener. “I love the oppor-

tunity. I love going up against the best of the best and we all know what Peyton brings to the table, a Hall of Fame quarterback. You’re not going to find a quarterback that understands defenses more than Peyton. He’s just that kind of guy [who] un-

derstands formations, understands it all, said safety Antrel Rolle. “There’s not going to be much you can throw at him to really throw him off and confuse him, but it’s not going to stop us from trying. ... We have to be on top of our game. TONY WILLIAMS

Geno stands tall (for the most part) It wasn’t perfect, but Smith wasn’t helped in this game with numerous drops from his wide receivers. The Patriots game doesn’t represent his full potential as he still took too many sacks and looked uncomfortable in the face of pressure. There were also three bad interceptions in the fourth quarter where he threw to the wrong side of his target.

who lost 13-10 to the Patriots on Thursday night. The Jets will be left wondering what could have been from a gutsy effort as their offense was plagued with untimely drops by their wide receivers. The frustration included a Stephen Hill fumble in the first quarter that the

Patriots turned into a field goal and a 10-0 lead. But the story of the game for the Jets was a defense that did its part to limit the Patriots offense and keep the up-tempo Patriots in check throughout the night. The defensive effort limited the Patriots to 232 yards of total of-

After likely losing the QB competition with a three-interception performance against the Giants in preseason, Geno Smith did the same against the Patriots.

Not Brady as usual In the 2010 playos, the Jets emerged from Gillette Stadium with a win a game where their defensive line orchestrated constant pressure on Tom Brady. The Jets were helped in this quest on Thursday night with injuries depleting the Patriots oense of its playmakers. But the defense did a tremendous job of mixing coverage along with smart blitzes that generated a pass rush with minimal players being sent. Brady ďŹ nished the night 19-of39 for 185 yards and a touchdown.

Finally, a rush game It was quiet in preseason and ghastly last week against the Buccaneers, but the ground game took a step forward in New England. The running game topped 100 yards, paced by Chris Ivory with 52 yards on 12 carries and Bilal Powell, who added 48 yards along with a touchdown. KRISTIAN DYER

SINGING THE BLUES ON ROUND 2 FLOPS FANTASY

ADAM LEVITAN, LIVING THE FANTASY METRO’S FANTASY GURU BREAKS IT ALL DOWN

See that guy rolling around with a fork coming out of his ear? That’s a David Wilson owner. We have first trimester panic every year in fantasy football, but this year it’s bubbling over earlier than usual. That’s what happens

when second-round picks are getting benched, and just one of the first-round running backs (LeSean McCoy) goes for more than 100 rushing yards. Wilson, Wilson. David Wilson played as poorly as a running back can play in Week 1. That doesn’t mean the Giants will give up on him. Remember that he fumbled in last year’s opener and then went 15 games (127 total touches) without one. Brandon Jacobs has been brought in to help on third downs and at the goal line, but the early down work will still belong to Wilson as long as he cleans up his game. Given his exceedingly impressive talent and the Giants’ desperate need to make it work, now is the time to buy low. Don’t panic. Robert Griffin III insists his knee is 100 percent, but it

David Wilson wasn’t sharp, so buy low. / GETTY IMAGES

didn’t look like it as he lugged around a couple of braces. He was slow to get the corner, appeared hesitant to step into throws and rushed just five times for 24 yards Most concerning was that the Redskins didn’t call many zone-read plays. Griffin should get sharper, but if you had a draft today, Mike Vick would be a better pick.
