Brooklyn carousel gets flood guards Sandy. Jane’s Carousel was almost swept away in last year’s storm. When the East River overflowed during Hurricane Sandy, it very nearly took Jane’s Carousel with it. Eerie photos taken the night of the storm showed Brooklyn Bridge Park’s vintage 1922 carousel, which reopened in 2011 after many years of careful restoration, inundated by the floodwaters.

Auxiliary cop cons to get new game early A Staten Island auxiliary police officer was arrested Monday for impersonating an NYPD police officer to get the new Grand Theft Auto game early, the NYPD reported. AG to look into World Trade Center deal Investigate. Cuomo is suspicious of the nonprofit that owns the WTC name rights. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has asked Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to investigate a 1986 deal that sold the rights to the World Trade Center’s name to a nonprofit. The World Trade Centers Association, headed by former Port Authority executive Guy Tozzoli, paid the Port Authority $10 and made tens of millions of dollars off the naming rights. Schneiderman will determine whether the deal was illegal and whether Tozzoli and others received improper compensation that should have gone to the Port Authority and taxpayers. Cuomo said he and the attorney general would, “if appropriate, seek to recoup the value of the World Trade Center name for New Yorkers.”

NSA says Snowden took documents from internal website Former security contractor Edward Snowden was able to obtain secret documents revealing a massive U.S. spying effort from the National Security Agency’s internal website, U.S. officials said according to a

report yesterday. The classified documents leaked by Snowden were posted internally, and Snowden’s job allowed him to single-handedly make digital copies without his supervisors’ knowledge, government officials told National Public Radio. They did not tell NPR how Snowden took copied files out of the office, citing

an ongoing investigation. “We have an extremely good idea of exactly what data he got access to and how exactly he got access to it,” NSA’s chief technology officer, Lonny Anderson, told NPR. Anderson said the agency has taken steps to limit employees’ options for storing data since the NSA surveillance programs were revealed.

“One thing we have done post-media leaks is lock those down hard, so those are [now] all in two-person control areas,” he told NPR’s “Morning Edition” program. Snowden disclosed secret NSA programs involving the collection of telephone and email data to media outlets, including The Guardian and The Washington Post. REUTERS

Teen snatched from home found alive

WE’RE COMING TO NEW YORK.

A teenager abducted from her suburban Atlanta home by armed men who snatched her during a home invasion has been found alive, and two suspects have been arrested about 34 hours after the girl went missing, police said yesterday. “This is a good day, a good day for the Perez family,” said Clayton

County Police Chief Gregory Porter. “She’s safe, she’s with her family.” The girl, 14-year-old Ayvani Hope Perez, appeared in good health, though she was still being evaluated, Porter told a news conference. She was found at a location in Conyers, not far from her home in Ellenwood. Porter credited “hardcore police work” and “boots on the ground” for an end to the young kidnapping victim’s ordeal. US regulator says small banks could face cyber threat

The fingerprint reader on iPhone 5S received an early thumbs up for ease of use, helping dispel concerns about the scanning technology that has been notoriously unreliable in other cellphones.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency said yesterday that it is devoting significant resources to help smaller, community lenders fend off cyber attacks, after hackers attacked many major U.S. banks last year. Community banks often rely on outside providers for information technology services and may lack the resources or expertise to guard against cyber threats, Comptroller of the Currency Thomas Curry said. He said his office has established a senior position to coordinate with other

government agencies and the private sector on systemic cyber concerns, and it has teams of supervisors focused on informationtechnology security at the largest banks. “We have much work to do as regulators to make sure the banks and thrifts we supervise are doing everything necessary to protect themselves,” Curry said in prepared remarks for a speech in Washington. Curry said that regulators also would be assessing whether they have the right powers to guard against hacking attacks and that, if necessary, they could ask Congress for more authority. A series of so-called “denial of service” attacks in the last year repeatedly took down the websites of major U.S. banks.

month it was weighing options that could include an outright sale, in the face of lackluster sales of its new devices that run on the BlackBerry 10 operating system. The long-rumored Z30, unveiled at an event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,

will be BlackBerry’s new top-of-the-line device, taking the crown from the smaller Z10 that was launched early this year. The new touchscreen device will compete against the likes of the iPhone 5S and Galaxy S4. REUTERS

Beans, not bullets

Starbucks asks customers to leave guns at home Coffee chain Starbucks Corp. has asked U.S. customers to leave their guns at home after being dragged into an increasingly fractious debate

over gun rights in the wake of mass shootings. While many U.S. restaurant chains and retailers do not allow firearms on their properties, Starbucks’ policy had been to default to local gun laws, including “open carry” regulations in many U.S. states. REUTERS

Aaron Alexis displayed signs of psychological trouble before he killed 12 people, experts told Metro. He was arrested twice for gun-related incidents in 2004 and 2010, and was discharged from the Navy after a disorderly conduct arrest in 2008. He had also seemed increasingly agitated to his peers. He complained that his company owed him money, reported ABC, and friends de-

scribed him as paranoid. Dr. Peter Langman, author of “Why Kids Kill: Inside the Minds of School Shooters,” told Metro that one common trait of mass killers is that they feel wronged and want to take revenge. “He felt victimized in the Navy and he went after random people somehow connected in his mind to the organization that served him the injustice,” explained Langman. He added that Alexis’ history of violent behavior coupled with his gun use made him particularly dangerous. ANDREA PARK

“Obviously, when you go back in hindsight and look at all this there were some red flags — of course there were. ... And should we have picked them up? Why didn’t we? How could we have? All those questions need to be answered.” Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said yesterday the suspected Navy Yard gunman’s background presented some “red flags” easy to spot in hindsight and ordered a broad review of security worldwide, including clearances. Aaron Alexis, the 34-year-old suspect who was killed by police during Monday’s shooting, received a security clearance more than five years ago when he was still in the Navy and kept it in his most recent job as a technology contractor at the Navy Yard. Critics in Congress and elsewhere say his ability to keep his security clearance despite a history of mis-

conduct, including while in uniform, shows serious flaws in the system. Hagel, addressing reporters for the first time since the shooting said his deputy, Ashton Carter, would undertake two reviews — an examination of physical security and access procedures at all Defense Department installations worldwide. Carter’s review will look at the military’s practices and procedures for granting and renewing security clearances, including those held by contractors. General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said it would have been hard to foresee Monday’s bloodshed. “I don’t know what the investigation will determine, but he committed murder. And I’m not sure that any particular question or lack of question on a security clearance would probably have revealed that.” REUTERS

Don’t make Paltrow touch a used toilet paper roll And here I thought the people who brought flipflops to wear in the gym shower were high maintenance — but they don’t touch Gwyneth Paltrow. The actress reportedly has an assistant go in and wipe down her gym’s shower before she uses it. “She refuses to touch what she calls ‘somebody else’s shower water,” a source tells Life & Style. And don’t even get her started on toilet paper.

1

“She also refuses to use toilet paper that anyone has touched and demands an unopened pack.” This is a strange item. If you have the wealth and status of Gwyneth Paltrow, don’t you have your own gym and trainer? Like, she probably won’t be coming to my 12:30 p.m. Zumba class at Crunch. She can buy Crunch and all the new toilet paper rolls she wants.

Talking points

Hemsworth moves on, very quickly Liam Hemsworth seems to be taking his split from fiancee Miley Cyrus quite well. The actor reportedly hit it off with actress Eiza Gonzalez in Las Vegas after they had “just met,” chatting over drinks at a nightclub, according to TMZ. And back in Los Angeles, Hemsworth was spotted stopping by her apartment — and engaging in quite the passionate lip-lock.

Zac Efron went to rehab for cocaine Zac Efron’s people came clean yesterday and said that he’d recently completed a stint in rehab for alcohol abuse. However, that burst of honesty may have been a bit of sleight of hand to distract from something they still didn’t want to talk about: It was reportedly cocaine, not alcohol (or not just alcohol), that drove the once squeakyclean “High School Musical” star to seek treatment. According to TMZ, Efron’s problem was at its worst this spring,

when he missed several days of filming on Seth Rogen’s “Neighbors” due to his cocaine abuse. Uh ... so? I mean yeah, cocaine’s illegal and a harder drug, but am I the only one surprised that this is such a big deal? Addiction is addiction, and he’s in treatment for whatever it was. Also, everyone in Hollywood seems to do drugs. Betty White probably does drugs. How else could she be so perky at her age? Metro/Melinda Taub

If acting doesn’t work out for Jennifer Aniston, she can fall back on being a chicken farmer, as the $21 million Bel Air mansion she and fiance Justin Theroux purchased came with some feathered roommates. “We inherited the chickens from the previous owners,” Theroux tells GQ. “They were like, ‘Of course we’ll get rid of the chickens,’ and we said, ‘Are you crazy? Don’t get rid of the chickens. That’s half the reason we wanted this place.’”

Back on the big screen Interview. Julia Louis-Dreyfus talks returning to movies and co-star James GandolďŹ ni.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus co-stars with James GandolďŹ ni in “Enough Said.â€?

It may seem hard to believe, but “Enough Said star Julia Louis-Dreyfus hasn’t been on movie screens in 16 years. The “Veep lead’s last film role was in 1997’s “Deconstructing Harry for Woody Allen, with a pair of voice parts in between in 1998’s “A Bug’s Life and this year’s “Planes. But she swears she has nothing against movies. It’s just that TV was providing plenty of work for her. “Having these various series is a time-consuming thing, she explains. “I’ve managed my whole career — until actually at this moment — to work at home in Los Angeles.

And I have two kids, both of whom were born during ‘Seinfeld.’ So when I was doing these series and working eight or nine months a year, those off times were just like, I had to be home. It was untenable for me to think of going away to work on another project — for me personally, in my life. So I just didn’t. But thanks to cable — Louis-Dreyfus’ Emmywinning turn on HBO’s “Veep is returning for a third season — she’s found a much more manageable schedule. “With ‘Veep,’ I’m doing 10 episodes a year and it has opened things up for me, she says. “And also this film was shot in Los Angeles, which was fabulous. The film also gives her a chance to collaborate with writer-director Nicole Holofcener, a filmmaker known for complex and engaging female characters. Eve, Louis-

Dreyfus’ single mom massage therapist who starts dating a client’s exhusband, is no different. “This is a women who’s been hijacked emotionally without almost even knowing it — by herself, Louis-Dreyfus explains. “It really just spoke to me — not that I have ever done anything that deceitful in my life, but I understand why she did it. It does intrigue me, someone who means so well doing something so terrible. That setup paves the way for a brand of cringe humor in which LouisDreyfus insists she revels. “It was actually excruciating to do. I love scenes like that, she says. “I love awkward, wince-y, shame-filled moments of entertainment. I love to live there for as long as possible.

Remembering

Memories of GandolďŹ ni “Enough Saidâ€? marks the last ďŹ lm appearance of James GandolďŹ ni, who died of a heart attack during a trip to Italy in June. Co-star Louis-Dreyfus insists the romantic comedy is a perfect tribute to both the actor and the man. “First of all, he’s an outstanding actor,â€? she says. “Secondly, James is a gentle giant. This part that he plays of Albert, as this kind and thoughtful and earnest and selfeacing fellow, is very, very close to who James GandolďŹ ni was — much more so than Tony Soprano. He was no maďŹ a boss, James GandolďŹ ni. He was a dear, dear man.â€?

It’s way, way, way better than going solo. I’ve been very lucky. I’ve had the opportunity to work with an incredible amount of talented people, much more talented than myself. Lo Truglio, on working with others How do you balance the detective side of the show with the comedy side? The characters are good at their jobs, so it was important it looked like we knew what we were doing. The detective work gives us an arena, but it’s not the center ring. The relationships are what’s under the big top. I want to talk about the elephant in the room, but I feel like my circus metaphor is running amok, so I’ll stop there. Can you talk about being a part of comedy groups, rather than as a solo performer? It’s way, way, way better than going solo. I’ve been very lucky. I’ve had the opportunity to work with an incredible amount of talented people, much more talented than myself. I believe it’s why I do good work. I was learning how to collaborate way back when I started with my

dear friends in “The State.” It was a lesson that I’ve carried into other projects, and I make decisions on jobs based on whom I’ll be working with. “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” wasn’t any different. How is developing a character over a TV show different than a one-off character in a TV episode or in a movie? It’s new, so I’m feeling it out, but I love it. You

find new things as you go along. You have the foundation, the basic stuff, then it’s kind of like just building wings onto your house. Before you know it, you’re in debt, the pool’s been untiled for months, the ... this is a terrible metaphor. I should’ve went with the circus again. finding new things about your character as the show goes on? It’s a little bit of both. You got to plant the big stuff right out of the gate: He’s a grinder, he has a crush on Detective Diaz [Stephanie Beatriz], he’s got no social filter. But then there’s stuff that reveals why he has certain objectives, certain goals — romantically, professionally — that need to wait. Inevitable question: How much of the show is improv? We have terrific writers. But as [showrunners] Mike [Schur] and Dan [Goor] have said, it’s crazy to have the type of funny people this show has and not improv. Most of it doesn’t get in, but a surprising amount does. As far as the vibe on set, the energy — it’s exactly like most of the successful comedy projects I’ve done. No divas, respect all around, kindness to the crew — it all adds up. It’s easier to put your neck out and act like a fool if you feel safe.

This season, the Simone Rocha girl grew up. Eschewing her innocent femininity, she was rawer, more sexual and even more desirable. Pearl-embroidered stockings and pearl-encrusted collars mixed with tulle, silk, lace and crochet create an almost ecclesiastical effect. On paper this all sounds innocent, but the lace was wet-looking and the crochet appeared almost plasticized, which gave the collection a subversive undertone. A slick, moss-green leather coat with oversized lapels paired with a silk slip and stockings in a similar hue had a particular grimy but equally lusty feel. With a runway scattered with red and white roses and a series of broken trellises piled up at the catwalk exit, Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff immediately set the tone for their signature romance with a dark twist. The designer duo’s show is about the experience rather than just the clothes, and with a soundtrack featuring creaking doors and a heart beating — the pace quickening as each look appeared — it was an intense, almost creepy couple of minutes. But the clothes were beautiful. This season they took their technical work to the next level, with intricate beading and lace and satin stitch detailing finished MEADHAM to a flawless effect. 5 p.m. Lucas Nascimento It’s my last show of the week. I’m exhausted, but there’s been so much hype surrounding Lucas Nascimento that I can’t let myself crash quite yet. Everyone who hasn’t yet left for Milan is here, and for the penultimate show of the schedule, there’s a promising turnout. The first look is an all-black ensemble: A pair of tailored trousers is teamed with a knitted bath towellooking top wrapped

around the body. The look is simple, but the result is stunning. Later, the same idea comes in sunshine yellow, which adds a pop to a selection of sharp shaped skirts and clean-cut coats. Dresses appear tiered thanks to the way the fabric is draped around the body, and skirts have high slits. This is minimalism at its best. Evaded from the distraction of print or decoration, it is perfectly clear that the Brazilian designer has pure talent. ALICE TATE

A doctor inserts the T-shaped device, and it’s effective as hell at preventing pregnancy. Undetectable, reversible and easy to use, once it is in, you’re pretty much good to go. I’m not going to tell you to let anyone shove a foreign object in your uterus without doing your homework. So, look below for a very quick overview to help you suss it out.

ALL ABOUT IUDS: THE INVISIBLE BIRTH CONTROL Don’t settle for the sameold sex stuff you knew when you had braces or pimples. Although you may have sampled different sexual positions and partners before getting comfortable with your current jam, if you haven’t been equally exploratory with birth control, it may be time to upgrade to a method that better suits you and your partner’s current needs. If you’re ready from some straight talk about the intrauterine device (IUD), below is a chart so you can get schooled on this increasingly popular choice. First, a heads up: Lovers for whom pregnancy prevention isn’t an issue don’t need it, and the device won’t protect you from sexually transmitted infections unless paired with a male or female condom. According to Guttmacher Institute, almost 1 in every 10 American women using contraception in the 1970s chose IUDs. They

Why Scandinavian food is taking over Trends. It goes beyond gravlax and meatballs.

With New York’s first Nordic food festival, NORTH, coming up (Oct. 2-7) and new restaurants popping up like hipsters at indie concerts, Scandinavian food is hotter than ever. And if you ask the leading faces of New York’s food scene, there is only one way for the Scandinavian trend to go — up. “Just 18 months ago, there was really only one well-known Scandinavian restaurant in Manhattan, and that was Aquavit,” says Kalle Bergman, editor-inchief of the online food magazine Honest Cooking, which organizes NORTH. “Within the last year and a half, we have seen an influx in chefs from overseas coming to New York and opening up shops. And I believe in the near future that number will only grow. I don’t think we’ve seen the peak of New Nordic cuisine in New York City.” Scandinavian cooking is setting in so strongly that chef Marcus Samuelsson, who was born in Ethiopia and raised in Sweden, doesn’t even think to call it a trend anymore. “Good food is good food,” he says. “We will pickle and preserve. We will smoke. We will always have good seafood. Trends come and go, but if it’s good quality and the technique and products are great, people start to incorporate it in their food. The food of Scandinavia has a point of view, and it has always been unique.” He points out the fact that it also helps Scandinavian dining that America looks to Scandinavia for other culture — such as fashion and music — today more than ever before, whether the import is H&M, Acne, Swedish House Mafia or Robyn. “It’s a collective. And I’m very proud of being a part of that collective narrative,” Samuelsson says.

“I think it’s fantastic what Scandinavian chefs are doing here in New York.” The chef says the Scandinavian food scene in New York has been in constant evolution since the introduction of the smorgasbord in the ‘50s and the ‘80s opening of Aquavit, where his work as chef was focused on technique rather than ingredients, he says. Samuelsson has high hopes for where the scene will go next, too. “The next evolution is to get Scandinavian food items [in stores],” he says. “When I look at Italian food, it’s not a trend. You

can go to any store and find 10 different olive oils from Italy. That is essentially being on the world map. Having a couple of restaurants that you can brag about, that’s great, but you need more to have a global impact.” If we take a quick detour to this year’s summer in the Hamptons, Samuelsson’s predictions seem to be right on the mark. During the summer, Sweden was the buzzword among foodies there. Under the Swedish Culinary Summer, Swedish chefs, bartenders and brands sponsored dining and drinking events at fashionable charity events. “Sweden has been very hot in general the last years. Why? It’s quality and it’s different,” says Michelle Chernoff, the U.S. sales and marketing director for Xante, a Swedish cognac. According to her,

New York has been an easy market for Xante to move into due to the big interest in Sweden. But will there be a market for off-the-wall Scandinavian ingredients on the long term? “We now know about

strange spices from other countries, about kimchi from Korea,” Samuelsson says. “Why wouldn’t we want to learn about ligonberries and reindeer?” If you want a taste of the Scandinavian kitchen, Samuelsson suggests that you start out with an easy meal such as meatballs (his favorite) or gravlax.

My favorite NYC restaurants, by Alain Ducasse Dining. The venerated chef has a top pick for any and every occasion.

Don’t believe us? Come see for yourself.

Alain Ducasse’s “J’aime New York” launched last year as a 10-pound coffee table book, chock full of expert picks on where to dine in our city. For those who don’t feel like lugging a kettle bell-size tome around for culinary inspiration, though, come October it’ll be available as an e-book. We asked the French chef — whose 26 restaurants span eight countries — to tell us the best places to eat for just about every occasion worthy of a restaurant meal. Here are some of the best:

Prune: “There is no better place to witness the ritual of brunch than this intimate spot in the East Village. Though weekend mornings guarantee a crowd, chef-owner Gabrielle Hamilton’s plates are well worth the frenzy.”

Dinner with your in-laws

Porter House New York:

Peasant: “Warm and welcoming, this NoLiTa spot is the perfect place to dine with family. Woodburning ovens churn out seasonally-inspired Tuscan fare, and the smell of the food cooking over an open fire melts away any nerves.”

“There’s no better way to experience New York than through a steakhouse like Michael Lomonaco’s Porter House. With an outstanding view of Central Park, this is a truly romantic scene.”

Proposing to someone Le Bernardin: “Not only is this one of the most dynamic restaurants in the U.S., but here Chef Eric Ripert is able to inspire his guests through the artistry of his food. The restaurant is set so that everything is exquisitely in its place — an atmosphere worthy of an occasion such as an engagement.”

A business lunch to woo a client Marea: “This luxurious

seafood-focused Italian hot spot overlooks Central Park, and here Michael White serves some of the best pasta in town. Manhattan’s most important business moguls, fashion designers and notables spend their afternoons here, as it is always guaranteed to impress.”

Catching up with an old friend John Dory Oyster Bar: “April Bloomfield’s casual bar is a cozy corner in the Ace Hotel, where raw bar and prepared items are top-notch. Order a number of seafood plates to share and enjoy the expansive wine list.”

Making new friends Kitchen Arts & Letters: “For someone who cares about food, a trip here is a must. Dedicated to the literature of food, I can spend hours browsing through their collection of cookbooks, making it the best place to spark discussions with strangers who more than likely turn into friends.”

Taking out-oftown friends Katz’s Delicatessen: “The

best Jewish-style deli also happens to be the oldest. The staff piles slices of rye with old-fashioned cured pastrami and corned beef.”

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

There’s nothing natural about GMOs Re: ‘Take a kinder look at good old-fashioned GMOs’ (Metro, Sept. 16) Letter-writers Matt Brosnan and Kelton Barnsley sound like GMO spokesmen when the try to convince us that “genetic engineering is simply a much faster and more precise” form of the “selective breeding and the hybridization of plants” that farmers have been doing for centuries. What about the fact that arctic char “antifreeze protein” genes have been spliced into strawberries to give them greater resistance to freezing cold? Can Messrs. Brosnan and Barnsley explain to us how traditional farming would have hybridized strawberries with a kind of ocean fish? Please! Who are we fooling here? And, by the way, that is not an aberration, but rather a typical, in fact emblematic example of how GMOs operate. PASQUALE G. TATO, VIA EMAIL

Matt Brosnan in totally off-base in his assertions and only adds to the inaccuracies pertaining to GMOs. There is a HUGE difference between cross-pollinating and crossbreeding versus GMOs. Crossbreeding and cross-pollinating use natural reproductive mechanisms to combine genetic material from the same or closely related species (it’s why humans cannot crossbreed with animals), whereas GMOs allow for a “random” selection of genes from one organism to be inserted into the DNA of another organism. GMO tomatoes may be spliced with pig genes to prolong its growing season, this would not occur “in the natural world.” Crossbreeding and cross-pollination are natural phenomenon; GMOs are manufactured by biotech companies and created in a laboratory. The roles were reversed on draft night when Manuel was shockingly taken in the first round by the Bills, 23 picks ahead of Smith, who fell to the Jets in the second round. The Jets passed over Smith with both the No. 9 and the No. 13 picks in the draft. Sunday afternoon rep-

is understanding your reads, understanding really your progression more so than your reads, Manuel said yesterday. “Stick to that, stick to the coaching. I think that’s where a lot of the accuracy and having your body in line to throw the ball

resents an opportunity to show why the Bills were willing to defy conventional wisdom and take Manuel not just in the first round but above Smith. His transition to the NFL has been relatively smooth to date. “The biggest thing

accurately, that really comes into play. Although Smith might possess the bigger upside, it is Manuel who has impressed thus far in a limited sample size. Manuel has rarely looked flustered under pressure, a stark contract to Smith, who had three interceptions in the fourth quarter in a 13-10 loss to the Patriots last Thursday. Meanwhile, Manuel orchestrated a nine-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Stevie Johnson to give the Bills a 24-23 win over the Panthers. He called the win “more so a development thing for the team and the coaches than any personal statement.

Same old story

Coughlin still answering questions about Broncos The Giants got back to work yesterday, with the Panthers clearly in their sights. But before head coach Tom Coughlin could delve into that, he was forced to rehash his thoughts on the sloppy loss last week. “I’d like to see better play. The fact of the matter is we need to play better,â€? Coughlin said. “Through three quarters the other day [against the Broncos], it was still a very good football game. ‌ Finish the game is what we’ve talked about [and] playing four quarters. It’s a challenge for all of us to get this right. I understand the [team’s] leaders want to see more fire, but all I care about is playing better.â€? TONY WILLIAMS

Browns trade former top pick

In a league known for few major trades, the Browns dealt last year’s No. 3 overall pick Trent Richardson to the Colts for a 2014 ďŹ rst-round pick. Richardson was one of very few stars on the Browns’ roster, but was drafted by the previous regime.

Comparison The sample size is small, but through two games Geno Smith does not stack up well against E.J. Manuel. Completions: Smith: 39-of-73 (53.4 percent) Manuel: 45-of-66 (68.2 percent)

TD-INT ratio: Smith: 1/4 Manuel: 3/1

Sacks: Smith: 9 Manuel: 1

Richardson practices hurt, Coples improves Jets rookie Sheldon Richardson was limited in practice yesterday with a shoulder injury, but head coach Rex Ryan praised the defensive end for being out there and practicing, calling him a

NFL power rankings | by Mike Greger “tough hombre.” Richardson would not say which shoulder was hurt. “It’s fine,” Richardson told Metro. “It’s a stinger.” Fellow defensive lineman Quinton Coples practiced for the second straight day this week, including in drills. “Taking it day-by-day.

The trainers and coaches tell me to go out there and try it out. So far, so good,” Coples said. “It feels good. I’m just taking it one step at a time, doing what they ask me to do and move forward from there.” Coples called the decision on whether he’d play this week up to the training staff. KRISTIAN DYER

Seahawks (2-0)

Bengals (1-1)

There’s a new No. 1 after Seattle pummeled the 49ers and the best defense in football — that’s not opinion, as the Hawks rank first in takeaways/giveaways and total defense and teams are averaging five points per game against them — made Colin Kaepernick look human. Richard Sherman is angry, too. You won’t like Sherman when he’s angry.

If Giovani Bernard starts making plays like he did Monday night, watch out. He adds a dimension to an already explosive offense.
