Hillary Clinton to host fundraiser for Bill de Blasio Hillary Clinton will be hosting a fundraiser for Democratic mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio next month, de Blasio’s campaign announced Thursday. The campaign did not release any specifics, promising those were to come. The Clintons endorsed de Blasio last week in a statement via their respective spokespersons saying that they “were proud to see him run a thoughtful, creative campaign about the issues, and they are behind him as he moves on to the general election as the Democratic nominee.” De Blasio and Clinton have campaign history: He was her campaign manager when she was elected a U.S. Senator in 2000. He also worked in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development under former President Bill Clinton. DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

In the last five years, the levels of sulfur dioxide — which can cause difficulty breathing, lead to death and contribute to acid rain production — decreased by 69 percent, according to a study by the city. Soot pollution has dropped 23 percent since 2007. Phasing out the most toxic heating oils as part of the Bloomberg administration’s PlaNYC initiative is the largest contributor to the reductions, officials said. Northern Manhattan, northern Queens and the South Bronx saw the greatest improvement in air quality. “There’s nothing more fundamental than the right to breathe,” said Eddie Bautista, executive director of the NYC Environmental Justice Alliance, after praising the results.

Better air There are several reason the air has improved in the city. •

Through the city’s Clean Heat program, more than 2,700 of the most heavily polluting buildings converted to cleaner fuels since 2011.

Expanding the regional gas supply and local distribution, as well as state emission regulations, has also contributed to cleaner air quality.

Cops release suspect photo in 1992 Brooklyn murder The New York Police Department is putting out another call for information on an unsolved 1992 Brooklyn homicide.

Wade Arthur, 1992 / NYPD

Police say that Henderson Griffith was shot in the chest by Wade Arthur on July 28, 1992, about 10:10 p.m. at the corner of Strauss Street and Lott Avenue in Brownsville. Griffith was 23 at the time of the shooting and lived just down the street from where the murder occurred. He was taken to Brook-

dale Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival. Arthur would be 42 now. Police believe that he was spotted hanging out in Brooklyn this past July. They describe him as being 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds. Police also believe that he grew his hair out and now has dreadlocks. DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

NBC interview

The estranged wife of George Zimmerman said in an NBC TV interview on Thursday that she now doubted his innocence after standing by him during his trial.

Shellie Zimmerman was asked on the NBC Today show if she now doubted that he acted in self-defense on the night that Martin was shot. “I think anyone would doubt that innocence, because I don’t know the person that I’ve been married to,” Shellie Zimmerman said in the interview. REUTERS

For all the campaigning, debating, online articles and on-air interviews about Obamacare, if a person walked down the street asking people what it means to them, the vast majority would say, “I don’t have a clue” or “Beats me” or perhaps “What are you doing out here, Mr. Biden?” At least that’s what the polls suggest. A Wall Street Journal/NBC news sampling found that nearly 70 percent of Americans don’t understand this law. They don’t know how it is going to work, how they’ll fit in, or whether it will cover their Cialis prescription. “Hold on, honey. Let’s not buy the bathtubs yet!” This is one of the most sweeping changes to the government’s social safety net in our lifetimes, and roughly three-quarters of us don’t know what is happening. No wonder President Obama is storming the country

Or liberal criticism. Or any sound coming from anyone who wants to reconsider, revamp or re-carpet this massive overhaul of how we get our aspirin. And plenty of people fit that

profile. A CBS/New York Times poll found only 39 percent of voters now favor Obamacare. Just over half disapprove of it, including conservatives who think it goes too far, liberals who think it does not go far enough and independents who just think it is too convoluted to work as advertised. You can hardly blame the White House for wanting to push all those voices aside. To be fair, the president won this fight back when Obamacare was passed by Congress and there is no rule that requires him to get it reapproved now. But there is also no rule that prevents his opponents from trying to make adjustments, especially when so many Americans either don’t like the way this law is headed, or get headaches trying to sort out what it will really mean. Is there a doctor in the house? Who knows?

OH, OBAMACARE!

Police in Newtown, Conn., have been ordered to release 911 calls made from Sandy Hook Elementary School during

last December’s massacre of 20 first-graders and six educators by a lone gunman. Even with the unanimous decision by the nine-member Connecticut Freedom of Information Commission on Wednesday, it is still uncertain

when or whether the tapes will be released to numerous media outlets that have sought them since the ragedy. Danbury State’s Attorney Stephen Sedensky III, who is leading the investigation into the shooting in which the gunman also

killed himself, said Thursday his office will appeal the decision in Superior Court and seek an immediate stay to prevent the release of the audio tapes. He has argued that release of the tapes could impact the ongoing investigation. REUTERS

A grieving mother fights Finding meaning. The mother of a slain teen used his death to create a dialogue for peace in a troubled neighborhood. Clementina Chery had a choice to make shortly after her 15-year-old son was gunned down in crossfire between gangs in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood. “For me, the anger and violence was there,” she said. “I didn’t want to go that route. I wanted to go on the path less traveled.” Chery chose the path of peace following the death of her son, Louis Brown, and founded the Dorchester-based Louis D. Brown Peace Institute. Her son was killed in 1993 as he walked to a teens-against-gang-violence event one afternoon. It was

Following the trail of our bloody streets Boston, Philadelphia, New York City: Three different cities with a common problem. Gun violence has destroyed the lives of countless individuals on our

streets and wrought devastation across our neighborhoods, searing itself into their fabric. Today, Metro concludes our weeklong look at the impact gun violence has had on those cities in the aftermath of the massacre at the Washington, D.C., Navy Yard. THE EDITORS

a wake-up call, she said, “My anger was there, my search for revenge was there, but yet who was I going to take revenge out on? Someone who looked just like me? Someone who looked just like my son? So I had to channel my pain and my anger in a way that would be more about rebuilding the community,” she said. The Peace Institute focuses on primary prevention, to stop the seeds of

violence before they grow, and peace education as a way to stem violence. It has even developed curriculum for elementary to high school students on how to choose peace over violence. Primary prevention such as peace education and emotional literacy are areas that Chery believes will provide long-term tools for young people and help communities more than “Band-Aid solutions.” For 17 years, the Institute has also put on the Mother’s Day Walk for Peace through Dorchester. This year, Scarlett Lewis, whose son Jesse was one of the 26 students and educators killed during the shooting in Newtown, Conn., spoke to the crowd. “If we don’t address the emotional psychological needs of hurt children then they will become hurtful adults,” Chery said.

Investigators believe the young men may have been part of a group of friends that had some sort of physical altercation with the shooter prior to this fatal double shooting. Page’s mother, Paulette Page, described her son as “a fun-loving person” who

played football, rapped, “was into fashion,” and “liked music, entertaining people [and] partying.” He and Earl-Govon were there with a group of five other friends for a cookout that had carried over to later in the evening. “I don’t know what to say,” she said. “He didn’t have any enemies out here.” Shortly after the shooting, there was a candlelight vigil on Washington and St. Johns, where Paulette’s mother lives. “That’s where he grew up,” Paulette explained. Paulette has had no updates from police regarding the investigation into her son’s death. She said she doesn’t understand how there were so many people at the barbecue but are currently no leads the shooter. DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

Ralphiee Colon, brother of gun victim: ‘I’m hurt every day’ Melanie Colon was one of Philadelphia’s 331 homicide victims last year. The young mother, then 22, went missing from her North Philly home on May 8, 2012. Her body was found less than a week later, just before Mother’s Day, in a wooded area near Tacony Creek Park. Like the vast majority of the city’s crime-related fatalities, she had been gunned down, shot six times at close range. Melanie’s family still struggles with her death, and with the fact that her killer has not been brought to justice. “It’s almost about to be two years,” said Mela-

nie’s brother Ralphiee Colon, 18. “But the emotions are still there. I’m hurt every day thinking about it.” He believes that his sister would still be with him were it not for the guns flooding the city’s streets. “She would still be here because them guns is powerful — they can take people out fast,” he said. Ralphiee’s primary motivation is keeping

Melanie’s memory alive, he said, and searching for answers in her slaying, partly by maintaining a Facebook tribute page that has 10,000 “likes.” “At the end of the day, it’s what I have to do. I’m OK — I don’t want to kill myself because if I kill myself, what would that do? I will go to hell, and I won’t see my sister and my mom. So I’ve got to keep going.” ALEX WIGGLESWORTH

Slinging some ‘Mechanical Bull’ Interview. After a meltdown, the Kings of Leon are returning to form. At Kings of Leon’s pinnacle, they were rock ‘n’ roll personified: a multiplatinum fourth album, “Only by the Night,” in 2008, lingerie models and rumored riders of excess that read like a pharmaceutical shopping list. Their 2011 mega-tour should have undisputedly confirmed the Followills — brothers Caleb, Jared and Nathan, and cousin Matthew — as rock’s royal family. Instead, it ended in self-inflicted regicide, when frontman Caleb delivered this gutter-style mid-show abdication in Dallas: “I’m gonna go backstage, and I’m gonna vomit; I’m gonna drink a beer, and I’m gonna come back out and play three more songs.” He never returned; the tour was over.

But after a two-year hiatus, the Kings are back to reclaim the throne. The Nashville-based band’s sixth album, “Mechanical Bull” — which dropped Tuesday — seems a return to form, with all the frank storytelling lyricism of their early albums. Bassist Jared says he actually knows how to ride a mechanical bull. “I did one at this party called the Neon Carnival party in California at Coachella,” he says. “I’m pretty sure I’m the only

one that rode it correctly with one hand in the air.” Was the hedonism of your early days a rebellion against your religious upbringing? Probably not consciously, but it was definitely like an animal that had been let out of a cage and allowed to roam free. I feel like every single person I know who grew up in the United Pentecostal Church, if they ever get out of it, they go crazy for at least a few years. You’ll see them out

and they’ll either have ridiculous hair or the girls will dress so inappropriately. Your love of rock music from the early ages stands in stark contrast to church music. Did it form part of your escapism? Yeah, it was almost in a sense like when you said earlier, “Was the hedonism part of a rebellion?” That wasn’t so much consciously as maybe rock music felt rebellious to us. Because growing up, we

weren’t allowed to listen to anything. Our parents would let us listen to music from the ’50s and ’60s because a lot of the themes were toned down. But we would hear stuff every once in a while. I remember hearing sneak peeks of Nirvana and stuff at friends’ houses and even like being a young kid in fifth or sixth grade ... and thinking, “Holy s—, that is awesome!” Was the 2011 meltdown drug- or alcohol-related? People think we were huge druggies — we did acid one time. People would see us and be like, “Man, those guys must be on acid. … They’re on MDMA.” Stuff like that. We would try stuff once to see what it was like and be like, “No, I don’t like that. I would rather smoke weed and drink beer.”

‘I stopped Googling myself’ Interview. Scarlett Johansson discusses “Don Jon and not caring about being a sex symbol. “Don Jon writer-directorstar Joseph Gordon-Levitt says he wanted Scarlett Johansson as his co-star in part because she herself has been a victim of a certain amount of objectification within pop culture. But while Johansson is happy for the implied compliment, she doesn’t think she’s all that special. “I think that sure, I’ve been a victim — if you want to say — of that as much as anybody else. I don’t feel particularly affected by that more than any other person in the spotlight, I guess, she says. “But I think it’s something that I’ve used — my own status as a sexiest whatever-youwant-to-call-it or whatever it is, a label you want

to put on it. I’ve been able to use it to my advantage while trying to avoid getting pigeonholed as much as possible. I don’t want the work that I do to feel like a reaction to the fact that I’m trying to get away from that. Speaking of getting away from that, Johansson keeps away from the vast swaths of Internet devoted to her beauty and private life. “I stopped Googling myself, she admits. “Nothing good ever comes out of it. It’s best to avoid it. It gives you an inflated idea of yourself, as well. You suddenly feel like everybody’s paying

attention to you all the time. Of course, in her case she might be right — even if the idea still strikes her as odd. “The other thing is, why do you care? You don’t know me, she says. “It always makes me wonder why anybody cares. I don’t particularly care to know about any person I don’t know, about their romantic life. I mean, I guess we’re all nosy in some way, but it’s something that seems unrelated in my mind. I mean, I know people like celebrities and maybe that gives them something to dream about — I

don’t know. That’s not to say Johansson wants any of that content eradicated — or even regulated in any way. “There are no rules, that’s the Internet. There’s no rules. You can’t impose them, then we’d be living in China, she says. “If you want to have a free country or whatever, you can’t impose any regulations on the Internet. While pal GordonLevitt has directed his own feature, Scarlett Johansson won’t be far behind. “I’m actually directing a film next summer, which is an adaptation of a [Truman] Capote novella called ‘Summer Crossing,’ she says. “It’s something I’ve been working on for what feels like forever. It’s been about six years, and we’re finally going to do it.

Movie fans, rejoice Movies. The New York Film Festival is coming to town for a two-week run. This year marks the 51st iteration of a cultural institution, The New York Film Festival, and the first since 1988 without lead programmer Richard Pena. New head Kent Jones has crafted a bigger slate, with some more mainstream titles, including Ben Stiller’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” But the austere films remain. Tsai Ming-liang (“Stray Dogs”) and Jia Zhangke (“A Touch of Sin”) bring mind-melding long takes. There’s the latest from iconoclasts like South Korea’s Hong Sang-soo and Claire Denis (“Nobody’s Daughter Haewon” and “Bastards,” respectively). France’s Arnaud Desplechin comes to America with “Jimmy P.,” with Mathieu Amal-

ric Benicio del Toro. There are still a pile of the Oscar season’s biggest heavyweights: Paul Greengrass’ pirate saga “Captain Phillips,” the Coen Brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis,” Alexander

Payne’s father-son road trip drama “Nebraska” and two Joaquin Phoenix films (Spike Jonze’s “Her” and James Gray’s period piece “The Immigrant”). But perhaps the most unlikely (and most welcome) inclusion is “Alan Partridge,” in which Steve Coogan finally brings his most famous creation to the big screen. Stay tuned for more NYFF pieces throughout the next two weeks.

Michael Douglas didn’t share his birthday with Zeta-Jones Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones share a birthday, but this year they didn’t share it together, according to E! News. Douglas, who turned 69 Wednesday, was still in Los Angeles following his big win at the Emmys Sunday, while Zeta-Jones is believed to have celebrated her 44th birthday in China. The recently separated couple are still “taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage.

Hamm downplays throat surgery Jon Hamm is undergoing throat surgery, but it’s not so bad, he told Jimmy Kimmel during an interview. “I’ve got a polyp on my vocal chord, Hamm explains. “It’s not as bad as how the National Enquirer reported it, which was that I was coughing up blood and probably have cancer. I was like, ‘That’s good to put out there. Thanks, guys.’

Daryl Hannah has autism Daryl Hannah, star of “Kill Bill, “Splash and pretty much the entire ’80s, is autistic, she has revealed. The actress was diagnosed with autism as a child, and she struggled with “debilitating shyness throughout her career. She fought to hide her condition from her Hollywood employers, and often refused to give interviews and make promotional appearances, “not because I was above it, but because I was terrified, she says. Hannah says she’s doing better now. She spends much of her time on environmental activism and has a

It seems like only yesterday that celebrities only suffered from two things: exhaustion and dehydration. Metro/Melinda Taub

Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf and three other “Fury castmembers were “ordered to go camping together recently in the English countryside in preparation for the film, according to Us Weekly. “They play soldiers in the same World War II troop, and the director [David Ayer] wanted to make sure they bonded, a source says.

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

Use the laws on the books before making new ones Re: ‘Guns in our cities’ investigative series (Metro, week of Sept. 23) The politicians who favor more gun control laws refuse to publicly acknowledge that criminals are not deterred by more legislation. Burdening law-abiding citizens with more fees, licenses and ownership requirements is an infringement of their natural right of self-defense. There are already enough gun laws on the books at both the federal and local levels. Let’s enforce those laws before incorporating new ones. Those who want more control have conveniently forgotten “the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” More gun laws, indeed, would be an infringement of that right. JOHN STASNEK, VIA EMAIL

What is the intention of those behind gun con-

trol? Ironically, it is the same of those who are pro-gun. We all want less crime, including violent crime. So the argument becomes how to go about it. One side wants to get rid of the tools of the shooting crime. How come there is no push to ban cars after a drunken driver kills someone? That is the same concept — in that crime, the tool is the car. It seems a little far-fetched to try to ban cars because they might be involved in a drunken driving incident. Focus on the behavior and the criminal. Victims may still be alive had there been stricter punishments and if the state actually forced criminals to be responsible for their actions with tougher penalties Probation will hardly stop a criminal from repeating. Sadly, not all crime could possibly be prevented, but repeat offenses can easily be curtailed. JASON LAVESQUE, VIA EMAIL

Jets return to location of national embarrassment NFL. Mark Sanchez and the Jets had an ugly loss to the Titans on Monday Night Football. The Jets are returning to the scene of the crime on Sunday, and while they’re not looking for revenge, they are looking like a different team. About the only thing in common between the Jets’ Week 15 game vs. the Titans in 2012 and this year is the game’s location. Last season’s team had underachieved, battled injuries and consistently showed a blase attitude on the field. Fast forward a year and the Jets are 2-1, surprising many with their strong start. They look nothing like the team that limped into

Nashville, Tenn. last year and lost 14-10 to the Titans, with Mark Sanchez’s five interceptions representing the low point of the season. “The guys were feeling like trash. We threw it away — playoffs, wild card. We were very disap-

pointed with the outcome of that game. This year is different circumstances, a different team. We’re just trying to keep it up,” safety Antonio Allen said. “We can’t say 3-1 because we’re not there yet. We can’t get too high on ourselves. We still have to play and compete.” This week’s game represents a chance for the Jets to finally put away that ugly chapter. In the Jets locker room, however, the focus isn’t on last year. The best way to move on from last year’s debacle against the Titans is to move up in the standings. “It’s not really about last year at all. It’s a new season,” linebacker Garrett McIntyre told Metro. “There are no demons; it is a new year.”

Jets vs. Titans: Three things to watch Not much was expected of the Jets this year, so to end the first quarter of the season with three wins would defy logic and expectations. We look at what it will take to beat the Titans (Sunday, 4:05 p.m., CBS):

1

Wide load The Jets boasted two 100-yard receivers in the same game for the first time in franchise history last Sunday. It was a big game for Stephen Hill, the much-maligned receiver who as a rookie a season ago underwhelmed with drops. Sunday was also a statement for Santonio

Holmes, now 11 months removed from a seasonending Lisfranc injury.

2

Titanic challenge Titans running back Chris Johnson is on pace for another monster year. Last week against the Chargers, he had 19 carries for 90 yards, with both a rushing and receiving touchdown. Johnson had a 94-yard touchdown run in a Monday-night win over the Jets last year.

3

Airing it out A team built on the “ground and pound” since head coach Rex Ryan’s arrival is now suddenly pass-happy in the West Coast offense. But they face a Titans pass defense No. 10 in the NFL, with three picks. KRISTIAN DYER

A WINNING PAIR!

Sunday Nights The Giants will run into old friend Andy Reid, who left the rival Eagles and has the Chiefs 3-0 as their new head coach. / GETTY IMAGES

Giants’ season at crossroads in Kansas City NFL. Veterans and Tom Coughlin aren’t ready to give up on 0-3 season just yet. The Giants’ season is at a crossroads, no matter what head coach Tom Coughlin says, because 0-4 is a hole out of which not even Big Blue can likely climb. But with all the adversity, the Giants remain poised and united, with every player confident Sunday’s matchup against the Chiefs (3-0) will be the game that kick-starts a winning streak. “I’m pretty sure we’ll

come out with a win this week,” defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul said. “I can sit here and kid around, [and say] it’s a must-win situation, but that’s been thrown around for a while now. We need to win this game. ... I feel like our team’s going to come together and play in harmony. We have great chemistry here, but we haven’t been playing with great chemistry or harmony.” The Giants, to their credit, haven’t offered excuses for their poor start. And while it looks dark right now, the veterans who have been through a myriad of situations over the years think it’s only

a matter of time before they break through. Coughlin, who was as animated as he’s ever been during Wednesday’s weekly press conference, again had an edge in his voice Thursday, but also wasn’t short on optimism. “I think it’s a long season. We’ve played three games [and] we have a lot of games to go,” said Coughlin. “Certainly, we want to win, and that’s our entire objective. [But] are we standing on the edge of the cliff ? I don’t look at it that way. I see a lot of football to play.”
