in connection with the assault of Alexian Lien, who was driving an SUV and got involved in an altercation with a group of bikers, which was captured on video. Police said the bikers then pulled Lien out of the vehicle and beat him up in front of his wife and 2-year-old daughter. Last night, supporters of Edwin “Jay” Mieses, the biker who was run over by Lien, held a silent prayer outside of St. Luke’s Hospital in Manhattan, where he was in critical condition.

Chelsea bank calls bomb squad on suspicious package: NYPD Police reported Wednesday that a bank robber left a suspicious package at a Capital One bank in Chelsea around 2:45 p.m. According to police,
Graffiti artist Banksy will be in New York this October. Or so says his website, which declares “The street is in play,” and advertises a monthlong “artists residency” called “Better Out Than In.” The website also states that Banksy will try to “host an entire show on the streets of New York,” and displays a quote from fine arts painter Paul Cezanne: “All pictures painted inside, in the studio, will never be as good as those done outside.” The first installment appeared in Chinatown on Tuesday. It featured two young boys, with one reaching for a can of spray-
paint on a sign reading “Graffiti is a crime.” The image was posted on Banksyny.com under the heading of “Manhattan.” Yesterday afternoon, the piece had already been painted over — but another work popped up online as “Westside,” stating: “This is my New York accent ... normally I write like this” in two fonts. Street art fans are encouraged to follow #banksyny on Twitter and access a toll-free audio guide. “Call the number next to the painting and select the appropriate option on the keypad,” Banksy’s website instructs. Man pleads guilty to raping 73-year-old in Central Park
MTA approves credit for Metro-North New Haven line riders
A 43-year-old man has pleaded guilty to raping an elderly woman while she was birdwatching in Central Park, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said. David Mitchell admitted approaching the victim, 73, on Sept. 12, 2012, and hitting her head on the ground. After raping her, Mitchell fled. “David Mitchell is a predator who targets the elderly, taking advantage of his victims’ age and size, Vance said. He is set to be sentenced on Oct. 16 on charges of rape, possession of a weapon and robbery as a sexually motivated felony.
Metro-North riders who were affected by last week’s power outage along the New Haven line may be eligible to receive a credit from the MTA. “Because of the unprecedented magnitude and duration of this disruption, the MTA Board has concluded that a credit for our customers is simply the right thing to do, MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast said. Customers who purchased weekly and monthly tickets will get credit for future tickets. Details on how riders can receive the credits will come out in the next few days.

On a warm Saturday, Ashley Vazquez, 12, bounded across a cracked tennis court at Brooklyn’s Marcy Houses and, with a thwack, sent a ball flying over the chain-link fence serving as a net. “I can have one bad week, none of that matters when I come to tennis, Vazquez said. Big makeover for the courts Michael McCasland said he doesn’t want to approach NYCHA or the Parks Department, which runs the Marcy court, until he can show them the money. The endeavor is ambitious. Camille Motta, one of the league’s volunteer instructors, said renovations would send a positive message for the kids. “It’s funny — when I first saw that court, I said how amazing is it to live here, with a tennis court in your backyard, McCasland said. “The flip side of public housing is they have so many people living all together, stuff isn’t in the best condition.

Last homeless Sandy victims to be evicted Anniversary. Sandy victims still living in city hotels have to be out Friday. Roughly 300 New Yorkers still living in hotels paid for by the city after being left homeless by superstorm Sandy will be forced to vacate their rooms this week after a judge ruled the program was too costly. Cancellations, delays ripple across nation in shutdown No bars. Tourists with prepaid tickets to visit Alcatraz Island were unable to tour the former prison. A string of cancellations and delays caused by the federal government shutdown rippled across the United States yesterday, ruining dream vacations, upending carefully laid wedding plans and complicating the lives of millions of people. From blood drives to day care programs, musical performances to research projects, the disruptions caused by the political stalemate in Washington sparked growing frustrations and left people scrambling to make alternative plans. Scores of weddings
planned at national parks and monuments around the country were moved or postponed, and vacationers hustled to change their itineraries after finding iconic sites from the Statue of Liberty to the Lincoln Memorial closed. “We’re really disappointed. We spent a lot of days waiting for tickets so we just want to go inside the statue,” said Gaelle Masse, a tourist from Paris who was startled to discover the Statue of Liberty was closed. In Boston, Italian tourist Federico Paliero and his girlfriend Claudia Costato peered through a closed metal gate to catch a glimpse of the USS Constitution, a wooden, threemasted U.S. Navy ship from the 18th century docked in Boston Harbor that serves as one of the city’s major attractions.

Shutdown ‘insidious’ danger to US U.S. intelligence community leaders warned yesterday that the government shutdown, now in its second day, is an “insidious” threat to national security that will increase the longer workers are off the job. “I’ve been in the intelligence business for about 50 years. I’ve never seen anything like this,” James Clapper, the U.S. Director of National Intelligence, said at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the eavesdropping programs. “This affects our global capability to support the military, to support diplomacy and foreign policy. The danger here is that this will accumulate over time. The damage will be insidious, so each day that goes by the jeopardy increases,” he said.

Change. Berlusconi U-turn secures Italian government survival Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta won a confidence vote in parliament yesterday after Silvio Berlusconi, facing revolt in his own party, backtracked on threats to bring down the government. As dozens of centerright senators prepared to defy their media magnate leader and salvage the left-right coalition led by Letta, Berlusconi staged an abrupt U-turn and said
he too would back the center-left prime minister, just days after he sparked the crisis by pulling his ministers out of Letta’s cabinet. Financial markets reacted positively. But the end of this crisis leaves question marks over Letta’s ability to address deep problems in Italy’s economy that are troubling its partners in the euro. REUTERS

Promoter not liable in Michael Jackson’s death A Los Angeles jury found unanimously on Wednesday that concert promoter AEG Live was not liable in the wrongful death lawsuit brought
by family members of pop star Michael Jackson. The verdict, which found that the doctor the company hired for the singer was not unfit for his job, caps a fivemonth trial that opened a window into the late entertainer’s private life and final days. REUTERS

World powers on ‘right track’ on Syria chemical arms: Putin U.N. Security Council adopted a resolution that demanded the eradication of chemical weapons. Russian President Vladimir Putin said yesterday global powers were “on the right track with a plan to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons and could avert military intervention in the conflict if they worked together. Agreement on the plan to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons was reached after U.S. President Barack Obama asked Congress to approve air strikes to punish Syria’s government over an Aug. 21 gas attack. “There is every reason to believe we are on the right track, Putin told an investment conference. He said the chemi-

cal weapons plan, which has rekindled an effort to convene an international conference to seek a solution to the conflict,
could not have been put in place without support from Obama and the leaders of many countries. Russia has been Syrian President Bashar alAssad’s strongest backer during the civil war, blocking a number of Western initiatives in the U.N. Security Council and blaming the Aug. 21 gas attack on rebel forces.
Russia has emphasized that rebels fighting Assad must also abide by the chemical weapons agreement and made clear it would demand proof of government responsibility for any future attack before approving punishment in the Security Council. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia had seen reports and heard from various sources that some Middle East nations had developed close contacts with the al Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front and other militant groups, Interfax news agency reported. Lavrov said the reports, which he did not describe in detail, indicate that “these radicals already have some components of chemical weapons that were either found in Syria or brought in from abroad, Interfax reported. US opposes tech request to reveal spying demands Shrouded in secrecy. Companies want to publish spying facts. The U.S. Justice Department has told a secret surveillance court that it opposes a request from technology companies to reveal more about the demands they receive for user information, according to court papers. Negotiations between the federal government and companies such as Google Inc., have gone on for months, and while U.S. spy agencies said they plan to be more transparent, they have opposed company requests to disclose more detailed data.

“Such information would be invaluable to our adversaries, who could thereby derive a clear picture of where the government’s surveillance efforts are

Britain’s Guardian newspaper and the Washington Post reported beginning in June the companies’ deep involvement with surveillance efforts. The companies said some of the reporting was erroneous, so they want to reveal, for example, how many of their users are encompassed in surveillance demands. REUTERS

Obamacare’s opening day drew millions of consumers to the law’s core insurance exchanges, offering supporters and investors hope that if the websites can stay up and running, customers will follow. In New York, officials said their exchange had 2.5 million visitors in its first half hour yesterday. California reported as many as 16,000 hits a second. And U.S. officials recorded 2.8 million visitors to the federal website, Healthcare. gov, even as it fought technical problems much of the day. The difficulties with the online insurance marketplaces gave new ammunition to Republicans who say the Affordable Care Act doesn’t work. BLOOMBERG

If reports are to be believed, it looks like Croatian model Monika Jakisic has landed the coveted Hollywood role of George Clooney’s plus-one. Us Weekly reports that Jakisic spent the night over at his L.A. mansion last week and the pair “spent hours talking and have an incredible connection, the source (aka: Jakisic’s publicist) says. That connection apparently began at a London nightclub back in May where he and Jakisic “danced and held hands, according to the source.

Well, now that you mention it, Mia Farrow. ... / GETTY IMAGES
Ronan Farrow may be Frank Sinatra’s son, not Woody Allen’s Mia Farrow says her son with Woody Allen may actually be Frank Sinatra’s. Ronan Farrow, a 25-year-old lawyer, was the subject of a legendary custody battle between his mother and Woody Allen after Allen left the family to begin a relationship with Ronan’s adopted half-sister Soon-Yi Previn. Allen lost that battle (oh
boy, did he) and he and Ronan haven’t spoken since. Now it turns out even DNA might not connect the two. In a Vanity Fair profile, Mia admits that she’s not sure which famous man fathered Ronan, and that Frank Sinatra is “possibly his father. Sinatra was the love of her life, she says. “We never really split up.
When you look at Ronan, a handsome, blue-eyed guy, the resemblance is uncanny. But on the other hand, Ol’ Blue Eyes would have been seriously ol’ — Ronan was born in 1987, when Sinatra was in his 70s. As for Ronan, he had the best response ever via Twitter. “Listen, we’re all *possibly* Frank Sinatra’s son, he wrote.
Michelle Rodriguez is putting an end to years of speculation about her sexuality. “I don’t talk about what I do with my vagina, and they’re all intrigued, she tells Entertainment Weekly. “I’ve never walked the [red] carpet with anyone, so they wonder: What does she do with her vagina? Plus, I play a butchy girl all the time, so they assume I’m a lesbo. Eh, they’re not too far off. I’ve gone both ways. I do as I please. I am too f—ing curious to sit here and not try when I can. Men are intriguing. So are chicks.

‘Gravity’ After blowing people’s minds with acrobatic long takes in “Children of Men” in 2006, director Alfonso Cuaron waited seven years to do it again. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney — and no one else — play astronauts trying to survive in a state of weightlessness.
9
‘A Touch of Sin’ China’s minimalist Jia Zhangke (“The World,” “Still Life”) goes somewhat more traditional with his latest, a grim look at four stories that end in unimaginable, tragic violence.
‘Rush’ Ron Howard’s latest details the rivalry between 1970s Formula One racers James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl).
10
‘Don Jon’ Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars and directs this feature, playing an oily Jersey boy who finds sex with Scarlett Johansson not as fulfilling as jerkin’ to Internet porn.
6
‘I Used to Be Darker’ Extremely talented Baltimore resident Matthew Porterfield (“Putty Hill”) also chooses a more traditional route, taking a shaggy look at musicians dealing with a dispiriting split.

Valentino leads the flats charge As if flats couldn’t be any bigger this week, Valentino, the house responsible for fashion’s collective obsession with studded and diamante encrusted stilettos, didn’t show a single pair of high heels on its runway. Instead, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli accessorized their richly, vaguely medieval embroidered dresses and skirts with flat, sturdy sandals adorned with gilded birds. It was a game-charger of sorts, considering the huge influence Valentino has had on footwear recently — nearly every mid-priced brand and fastfashion retailer has a version of the rock stud in its lineup — and one that will most likely push the trend to its tipping point. Finally, women who prefer not to toddle around on 3-, 4- or 5-inch heels have a real selection of flat footwear to choose from that look as special as their taller cousins, whether they prefers their shoes loud and sporty (Kenzo, Celine), quiet and chic (Stella McCartney, Givenchy) or any of the many variations that fall in between. Talk about dramatic exits. After months of speculation, it was confirmed yesterday morning at the dark showgirl-inspired Louis Vuitton Spring ’14 show that Marc Jacobs would step down as creative director of the storied French fashion house. Executives at LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton confirmed in an article in Women’s Wear Daily that Jacobs, who has held the position for 16 years, is leaving to focus on taking his namesake brand public.
Known for spectacular sets and theatrics, Wednesday’s show — one of the closing events at Paris Fashion Week — didn’t disappoint. Jacobs paid tribute to some of his greatest hits. Ominous all-black ensembles embellished with fishnets, feathers and sparkly beading sizzled down a runway that featured a giant carousel, twin escalators and a hotel elevator — all from previous LV shows. The program notes were dedicated to the women who inspired Jacobs and “the showgirl
in every one of them.” It all ended with a standing ovation for the designer. Now begins the guessing game about who will take Jacobs’ place at the luxury brand. So far all bets are on Nicolas Ghesquiere, the former designer of Balenciaga. TINA CHADHA

Getting kinky can mean many things to many people, so go ahead and open up (then tie down). / GETTY IMAGES, FUSE
We need to abandon this idea that there are two ways to get it on: regular sex and kink. Sex means that there is no “regular. According to the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior (the largest and most comprehensive of its kind), there is “enormous variability in the ways that people knock boots. Further-
•
more, the survey shows that there’s usually more than one sex act happening per session. Since kink refers to sexual activities outside your usual practice, for some guys, oral sex with women or mutual masturbation would be considered kinky pleasures. For others, these activities are just called fun.
DO use the Internet to ďŹ nd others who share your kinky interests. Try websites like ALT. com, FetLife.com and KinkAcademy. com. Whether you peruse these sites on your own or with a partner, remember that communication is key. Talk about boundaries and expectations. And, of course, follow the best practices for privacy and online safety.
• DON’T forget to learn the language. A munch is a low-pressure, public gathering of people interested in BDSM. Leather culture involves more than gay men in chaps. As with any interest, get informed to better respect others. •
DO remember to stay safe. Ditching conventions does not require exposure to STDs or physical harm. The phrase “safe, sane and consensual, or SSC, refers to sexual practices that occur while of sound mind, are not hazardous, and happen with the expressed permission of all parties involved. Be responsible and enjoy!

When Michael Laarhoven dug into a steak back in 2007 — an experience he calls “a blur” — it was the first time he had meat in nine years. From then the former vegan started eating organic, ethical cuts, different from what he was used to seeing in kitchen freezers. Fastforward to today, where we meet him while he’s chopping rib eyes with the precision of a longtime butcher. At Back Forty, he often makes use of the whole animal on his menu — so if you buy a steak, know that somewhere back in the kitchen, Laarhoven’s prepping the tongue or heart to serve that night as well. Why did you originally become vegan? When I became vegan in the ’90s it was a reaction to factory farming and genetically modified food. Basically, the food is poisonous to the environment, to us personally and it’s just a disgusting practice I wanted no part of. So becoming vegan was a political statement against that sort of food. I don’t feel necessarily compassionate toward the animals; it was more a political issue for me. ... That’s why when I discovered that you can have meat that is responsibly and ethically raised, that’s when I got back into eating meat. It was honest food. It wasn’t filled with chemicals and made in some huge factory in the Midwest somewhere. If you should describe Back Forty’s food in three words, which would it be? We are making honest food. We are answering to the animal. I don’t know if that’s three words. ... We have to serve every single part of [the animal]. We don’t just serve steak every day and that’s it. We are going to sell the steak but we are also going to sell
On Tuesday, Laarhoven and Back Forty (190 Avenue B. #1, 212-388-1990) are working with Heritage Foods USA’s No Goat Left Behind campaign for a goat celebration dinner ($85). MAJA LUNDAGER PEDERSEN
Take it to the limit
Is it a goal for you as a chef to push guests’ limits? A little bit, yeah. It’s very important for people to understand that you can eat every part of [the animal]. We don’t want to just be throwing away what you don’t want. It’s wasteful. For the animal that died for you, for the farmer that raised it, for the cook that needs to know how to make food honestly and properly, it’s a waste for everybody. I want to sell the tongue. I don’t want it to go in the garbage. the tongue, the heart, the tail, everything you can think of. So how do you sell the less-than-appetizing parts of the cow? I think it’s more interesting for someone who comes in here. Rather than just getting a steak,
they can have a tasting of four or five different parts of the cow that they don’t necessarily know they can eat and know we could make into a viable dish. Where do you pick up inspiration for your dishes? I don’t know exactly where it comes from. I spend a lot of time reading books about food culture and I’m constantly thinking about food and different stuff that I can do and try, and that shows itself in the food. All summer I was obsessed with barbecue, so I bought a bunch of books about that and taught myself everything that I could, and by the time September came I had six different barbecue sauces on the menu. And my cooks and my sous-chefs and pastry chefs, we just constantly bounce off ideas at each other.

Perry’s Dems are wealth gives kings of her no right shutdowns to feelings Re: ‘Don’t mock Perry’s dark thoughts’ (Metro, Oct. 2) As somebody living with major depression, I’d like to point out the fact that Katy Perry lives in the inherently distorted world of a topselling pop star, which means that she has access to resources and a support system that the rest of us just will never even dream of having, which enables her to move the heck on when something as common as divorce hits. Hollywoodtypes who live in the big bubble of celebrity tend to bounce back, while some of us like myself never even have a chance of getting into a single relationship. Perry should in fact thank her lucky stars that she was a pop star getting a divorce rather than an “average” person. If she were like the rest of us, she might have a more legitimate cause for suicidal depression. ED ROSARIO, VIA EMAIL
In its coverage of the government shutdown, the media is being shamelessly partisan in favor of the Democrats and isn’t providing any historical context. Since 1976, the Democrats have shut down the government 15 times when they controlled the House. During the same time period, the Republicans have only shut down the government three times. The Democratic shutdowns were over budget items, including defunding things that they didn’t like. But the public doesn’t know any of this, because the media won’t explain any of it. The media would rather run stories about how only evil Republicans want to shut down the government. RON SHELTON, VIA EMAIL

Blueshirts hope coaching change means Cup win Rangers season preview. A new coach doesn’t mean a rebuilding phase for the Rangers. Michael Del Zotto acknowledged what was evident: Everything has changed for the Rangers. “It’s still an adjustment,” Del Zotto said after the Rangers’ preseason loss to the Devils last month. “The coaching staff is harping on the need to get the puck as much as possible. Everything’s different.” The Rangers enter the 2013-14 season with a new coach in Alain Vigneault and his puck-pressuring and puck-possession sys-

tem. Vigneault was introduced as the 35th head coach in franchise history on June 21. He replaces John Tortorella, who was fired four days after the 2013 Rangers season ended in Boston. Vigneault’s first act of
business was to announce that what happened in the Tortorella era would remain in the past. “If you see the guys, they’re walking around with T-shirts that [say], ‘Clean Slate, Grab It,’” Vigneault said. “Everybody’s got a clean slate.” On the first day of training camp, Vigneault left no doubt about his objective. “I have a little Stanley Cup on my desk. For sure, the 30 teams that are starting their training camp, that’s our quest, that’s our goal, that’s our long-term goal,” Vigneault said. “To get there, though, there’s a daily process.”

Breaking down the roster The Rangers return a squad fairly unchanged from last year’s underperforming team. The thought is Alain Vigneault will be able to maximize that talent. •
The biggest question may be about how Brad Richards bounces back. •
Defensemen The Rangers return all six defensemen from last year’s group in essentially the same roles. Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh will make up the first paring. They will be followed by Marc Staal-Michael Del Zotto and Anton StralmanJohn Moore. Staal, who suffered a gruesome eye injury on March 5, told reporters this preseason he feels good.
Forwards Outside of the specialty units, no grouping is more of a question mark than the corps of forwards. The Rangers enter the 2013-14 season without Ryan Callahan and Carl Hagelin, both of whom are expected to miss time while recuperating from offseason left shoulder surgery. Also, Derek Stepan missed camp due to a holdout. • Goaltending Without the trio that This is another area made up the of strength. WHY YOU NEED PHYSICAL GOLD OR SILVER IN YOUR IRA OR 401(k)
W
ith the uncertainty in the U.S. stock market and global economies, you’ve probably been hearing a lot about the idea of adding physical gold and silver to your investment portfolio, especially to your existing IRA or a 401(k) from a previous employer. But how do you go about transferring a portion of your IRA or rolling over an old 401(k) into actual physical gold and silver coins and bars? That’s where American Bullion comes in. “It’s actually a very simple and rather quick process, and we’ve helped thousands of people roll over or transfer their retirement accounts into precious metals,” explained Jon Nelson, a spokesperson with American Bullion. “We have a safe and simple in-house system in place that’s hassle-free and 100 percent tax-free.” Nelson also noted to not be discouraged or surprised if your financial advisor tries to steer you away from owning physical gold or
has never recommended it. “Typically, advisors don’t earn ongoing commissions when you invest in physical precious metals,” said Nelson. “Our clients often comment on how safe they feel now and how easy it was to become an owner of gold,” said American Bullion’s Nelson. “After all, gold has been preserving wealth for centuries, and whether you

In need of a few good scorers Devils season preview. Who replaces David Clarkson and Ilya Kovalchuk?
million unrestricted free agent deal with his childhood team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Kovalchuk and Clarkson combined for 26 goals and 55 points in 2013. In their place are Ryane Clowe, Jaromir Jagr, Michael Ryder and Damien Brunner. “I think we have more depth since I’ve been here, head coach Pete DeBoer said prior to the Sept. 21 preseason game at the Barclays Center. “I don’t think there’s any doubt about that. Whether the Devils’ depth can replace the offensive production lost remains to be seen.
NHL predictions A look at the 2013-14 NHL season:
Devils Hall of Fame executive Lou Lamoriello was dealt twin blows to his team this offseason. “If there’s something we can do, we will, Lamoriello said during the July 11 conference call to announce Ilya Kovalchuk’s retirement from the NHL. “We’re going to put the best possible team on the ice. Gone are Kovalchuk and David Clarkson, who signed a seven-year, $36.75

Forwards One of the best-kept secrets in the NHL during the lockout-shortened season was that the Devils were one of the better puck-possession teams in the league. The additions
of Jagr, Clowe and Ryder won’t hurt that. •
Defensemen The Devils’ defense corps returns virtually intact, save for Henrik Tallinder, who was traded to Bualo. The top duo of Andy Greene and Bryce Salvador is the ostensible shutdown pairing.
•
Goaltenders The Devils guaranteed their future by trading the ninth overall pick for Cory Schneider. The 27-year-old compiled a 17-9-4 mark with a 2.11 goals against average in 30 games with the Canucks last season. He’ll split time with 41-yearold Martin Brodeur.
