Massive manhunt looks for Oquendo Citywide effort. Volunteers and police have mobilized to try and find the missing autistic boy from Queens. As the search for Avonte Oquendo, 14, nears twoweeks, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said no stone has been left unturned. “We’re obviously very concerned at this juncture,” Kelly said. The Oquendo family’s lawyer, David Perecman, is suing the city over the boy’s disappearance. Last week, he recounted how a School Safety Agent, a member of the NYPD, reportedly told Avonte’s grandmother that she had seen him leaving his school at the Center Boulevard School in Long Island City and asked where he was going. When he didn’t respond — Avonte is autistic, and cannot communicate verbally — she let him go, Perecman said. Kelly said there is surveillance video disputing that report. “She actually tells him to go back,” Kelly said. Kelly said Avonte can be seen on the video slip-

ping out an unguarded side door. Because of this history and Avonte’s known fascination with trains and the subway system, police have kept a close eye on the underground transit system. A special task force of detectives is on the hunt for him, and Kelly has assigned an additional 50 uniformed officers whose sole duty is to look for Avonte full-time.
Divers and Harbor Unit police, as well as K-9 cops and NYPD helicopters, are helping in the search. Kelly said “Operation Century,” a network of 140 law enforcement agencies throughout the Northeast, is also involved in the search. And in the city, a deluge of volunteers — from the Guardian Angels and the Vulcan Society to everyday citizens — have turned out to assist law enforcement and the family, posting fliers all over the city. “We’re not giving up hope,” Avonte’s mother, Vanessa Fontaine, said firmly. “We’re just keeping on hope that we’ll find him anytime.” Oquendo’s autism has been a complicating factor in his disappearance: The fact that the boy is unable to communicate verbally has had authorities especially worried from the start. Fontaine was clearly moved by the outpouring of support for her and her child. “Thousands, from every community, every borough,” she marveled. “It’s beautiful. I’m so grateful for all their hard work and support towards me, it’s a beautiful thing.”

Pop star Nicki Minaj’s name dropped in alleged sex abuse scheme Police are searching for a man they say used Nicki Minaj to lure a young girl into his car and sexually assault her. The incident happened last Sunday afternoon at about 2:30 p.m. near Lincoln Street and 116th Avenue in Queens, police said. A man in a silver SUV drove up to three young girls and told them that he was an agent working for Nicki Minaj and he was looking for models, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. Kelly said he took photos of them, then asked them to get in the car. One 12-year-old girl complied, Kelly recounted, and he drove her to a nearby location and exposed his genitals and then sexually assaulted her. The girl managed to run to a nearby friend’s house, where the friend called 911. The young girl was treated at Queens General Hospital. Police described the suspect as a black male in his 20s, about 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, with a scruffy beard, black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a white undershirt, a red jacket, red sneakers, a red and white baseball cap and a silver chain. Kelly said the NYPD is hoping anyone with information about this man will call their Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577TIPS (8477). DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

Early yesterday evening, when New Yorkers turned on their taps in Lower Manhattan, an undetectable change nearly six decades in the making occurred. Manhattan drinking water, once running through a single 96-yearold tunnel, now partially flows through a new water tunnel and one of the largest infrastructure projects in city history. The new tube provides backup to the city’s threetunnel system. “When I came into office, I asked, what could literally close down this city? A water tunnel failure could really have done that,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, his voice echoing in the cavernous site 200 feet below Central Park. On Dec. 2, 1989, this very nearly happened. A

hours-long tunnel failure had officials contemplating a shutdown of water flow from upstate’s Hillview Reservoir, which would have left chucks of the city without drinking water. “If we were to lose one of the water tunnels without backup, that part of the city would be uninhabitable,” the mayor said. Due to financial ups and downs after construction began in 1970, progress on the project has fluctuated

since it was first envisioned by city planners in 1954. Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway said the project was a testament to the “absolute necessity of long-term planning.” “It’s entirely consistent with the bold leaders in the city’s history who planned for growth,” Holloway said. The last pieces of the tunnel will run through Brooklyn and Queens. When those sections are completed in the next few years, the city will be able to inspect and conduct maintenance on Water Tunnel 1 for the first time. “It’s not sexy, and nobody says thank you, but we should all be sleeping better because of this,” Bloomberg said.

The suspected homicide of prominent gay rights activist Louis Rispoli in Queens one year ago remains unsolved, and the NYPD says there are still no leads. Police re-released sketches of two suspects yesterday, as well as an announcement of a $22,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person or persons involved. The news, however, only added to the frustration of Rispoli’s friends and family, as the investigation into his death
appeared to have been badly mismanaged from the start. According to police reports, the incident occurred around 2:16 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012. A 911 caller reported an assault-in-progress at the corner of 42nd Street and Queens Boulevard, but when responding officers arrived, they discovered Rispoli, bleeding from the head. He was pronounced dead at 8:55 p.m. five days later, on Oct. 25. The medical examiner ruled Rispoli’s death a homicide a couple of days after an autopsy found that the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head.

Congress passes Shutdown. With under two hours to spare, Congress reached a deal to keep government open until Jan. 15. Congress approved a deal yesterday to end a political crisis that partially shut down the federal government and brought the world’s biggest economy to the edge of a debt default that could have threatened financial calamity. The bill passed without any difficulty in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives after Speaker John Boehner dropped the party’s efforts to link the spending measure to changes in President Barack Obama’s health care law. The deal, however, offers only a temporary fix and does not resolve the fundamental issues of spending and deficits that divide Republicans and Democrats. It funds the government until Jan. 15 and raises the debt ceiling until Feb. 7, so Americans face the possibility of another government shutdown early next year.
U.S. stocks surged, nearing an all-time high, as news spread that a deal was near. The standoff between Republicans and the White House over funding the government forced the temporary layoff of hundreds of thousands of federal workers since Oct. 1 and created concern that crisis-driven politics was the “new normal” in Washington. Sen. John McCain, whose fellow Republicans triggered the crisis with demands that the “Obamacare” health care law be defunded, said yesterday the deal marked the “end of an agonizing odyssey” for Americans. The Senate passed the measure on a 81-18 vote, and the House followed suit at 10:15 p.m., clearing the way for Obama to sign it into law no later than today, when the Treasury says it will hit the $16.7 trillion debt ceiling. Fully reopening the government was expected to take several days. While essential functions like defense and air traffic control have continued, national parks and agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency have been largely closed.

Although the deal would only extend borrowing authority until Feb. 7, the Treasury Department would have tools to extend its borrowing capacity beyond that date.

Study: Oreos as addictive as cocaine? Habit-forming. Finding yourself reaching for that extra cookie? Blame your brain. It may feel shameful to reach for that 10th cookie, but new research has shown that Oreos can be just as habitforming as drugs like cocaine. Bonus question
Were the rats high? No, it was the type of activation that happens all the time from engaging in a pleasurable act, the pleasure that’s important for learning behaviors that promote survival, like eating and sex. But drug abuse hijacks that area so it’s a different type of activation. In what sense are the cookies more addictive? We used a simple protocol
to measure reward and test their preferences. The rats were given both stimuli, and in extended studies their pleasure centers had greater activation from Oreos. They also indicated preference by choosing the environment containing the Oreos. Each pair had four tests and after that they were conditioned. Are other sugary snacks also powerfully addictive? Perhaps; anything that palatable that includes sugar and fat can activate our brains that way. It would need to be treated the same as any other type of drug addiction. METRO WORLD NEWS

Signs that iPhone 5C is a bad Apple Apple Inc. is cutting production orders for its plastic-backed iPhone 5C a month after launch, a source familiar with its supply chain said yesterday, fueling speculation the cheaper model of its main gadget may have been priced too high. Apple has asked one of its largest suppliers to increase production of the top-tier 5S, which went on sale at the same time, the Wall Street Journal reported. Analysts said this allayed concerns that the cheaper 5C will eat into premium sales and erode margins. Apple has told manufacturers it will reduce orders for the 5C smartphone in the final three months of the year, the source told Reuters. Sunday, the institute said. The creatures are found in all temperate to tropical waters, but because they dive to depths of 3,000 feet, they are rarely seen and remain largely unstudied. Little is known about their behavior, the nonprofit educational institute said. REUTERS
Hop aboard. Kangaroo causes shutdown at Melbourne airport An injured kangaroo shut down part of Melbourne Airport yesterday after it hopped through the busy terminal and into a drug store. Police in the southeastern Australian city secured the store before wildlife workers tranquilized and captured the animal. Wanted: Pregnant cows to help South Dakota ranches Ranchers in South Dakota who lost large parts of their cattle herds to a winter storm are not asking for blankets or food. They want pregnant cows and heifers of breeding age, said a group organizing donations this week. Twenty cattlemen so far have pledged cows to help replenish western South Dakota herds devastated in the Oct. 3-5 storm, said Montana rancher Kerry
White, head of Citizens for Balanced Use, which promotes grazing leases on federal lands. Some parts of South Dakota were pummeled by up to 4 feet of snow. Cows grazing in vast grasslands succumbed to hypothermia or suffocated in massive snowdrifts. REUTERS Death toll

More than 6,100 cattle have been reported dead from the storm that may have claimed up to 30,000 head at a time when they had not yet developed winter coats.

So, I feel like “Escape Plan is one big meta joke on society. Mainly for the plot alone: In the film, Sylvester Stallone stars as a structural engineer known for building prisons from which no man can escape. When he is wrongly convicted of a crime, he is incarcerated in a prison that he designed. That’s ... OK. I can suspend my disbelief just enough to pretend that Stallone has an advanced degree in engineering. But then Arnold Schwarzenegger co-stars as his fellow inmate who shows him the ropes. That’s right. Arnold Schwarzenegger is stepping in for Morgan Freeman. If that weren’t ludicrous enough, the cast and crew of the movie had their after-party in Times Square at the Italian chain restaurant Buca di Beppo. Not to knock Buca, but usually big movie premieres are reserved for slightly more exclusive locales — and ones not in Times Square. Then again, if you think about it, Times Square is practically a neon prison of its own design. So maybe it’s apt?

Taking a stand
JA RULE The rapper talks about how post-prison life brought him to “I’m in Love with a Church Girl.”
CLEANING UP HIS ACT GETTY IMAGES
What makes a man who’s come out of prison stronger than when he got in? For Ja Rule, it’s a firm belief in second chances and a whole lot of career plans. This spring, the man born Jeffrey Atkins was released from multiple prison stints, first for gun possession, then tax evasion. He’s cleaned up his act, most notably by starring in the new faith-based film “I’m in Love with a Church Girl.” How do you see the parallels between your
character and yourself? There are a lot of similarities about me and [him]. We went through some of the same obstacles: prison, dealing with trying to be a better man, trying to do something positive with your life. But you still have that dark side of your life pulling you back. Those parallels are very similar. What dark sides pulled you back? The streets. Friends that are still doing street things. A lot of those situations put a black eye on what I
Quoted
“We went through some of the same obstacles: prison, dealing with trying to be a better man, trying to do something positive with your life.” Ja Rule, on his character in “I’m in Love with a Church Girl”
was doing as far as my music and my films, because we had the federal investigations, I had the gun charge, the prison time — all those things were things that never should have happened. But, you know, such is life.
Why is this film an important story to tell? I think any story about redemption and second chances is a great story to tell, because I think, as people, we all go through dark patches in our lives, things that we sometimes
look at. Maybe we don’t feel that there is going to be a brighter day. It’s inspiring for people to see [the movie] because they look and it and say, “Well, damn, if he went through all of that and made it through, I can do it too.” I know, when I was locked up in prison the one story that would stick to my ribs was Nelson Mandela. His prison made my prison look like a five-star hotel.
MAJA LUNDAGER

You’ve been talking a lot about the gun law and having guns in general. Where do you think the line goes? There’s a very thin line, because in one breath I want to say there should be harsher gun laws. But then in the next breath I want to say we should be conscious about who we are attacking with these gun laws. I’m not saying that I didn’t do something wrong, that I didn’t commit a crime, because I did and I did my time for that. But I think that my time could have been used in a better way than to lock me up for two years. I don’t think there is nobody on the streets that said “Oh, wow, you locked up Ja Rule for holding a gun, maybe I shouldn’t hold my gun.” What would have maybe been a better thing is for me to go out and speak to kids about gun violence and gang violence and gun control.

‘Captain Phillips’ Paul Greengrass — who directed the middle two, superior “Bourne” entries — does his nervy, intense shtick on the true story of Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), a merchant mariner kidnapped by Somali pirates. telekinetic teen antihero of “Carrie.” / MICHAEL GIBSON Must see

‘Carrie’ Stephen King’s debut novel already received a masterful adaptation in Brian De Palma’s sleazy 1976 stab. But here we go again. Luckily it’s the ever-precocious Chloe Grace Moretz as the repressed teen
with telekinetic powers and Julianne Moore taking over for Piper Laurie as her religious nutcase mom. And directing is “Boys Don’t Cry”’s Kimberly Peirce. We might regret asking, but: How bad could it be?
‘Gravity’ After blowing people’s minds with acrobatic long takes in “Children of Men” in 2006, director Alfonso Cuaron waited seven years to do it again. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney — and no one else — play astronauts trying to survive in a state of weightlessness.

Sarah Paulson goes to some impressively dark, violent places in director Steve McQueen’s brutal and arresting “12 Years a Slave.” She plays Mistress Epps, the petty and defensive wife of Michael Fassbender’s malicious plantation owner. Strange, because “Michael Fassbender’s wife” sounds like such an appealing job description. This isn’t what you imagined being married to Michael Fassbender would be like, is it?
And before I got to the part about what it’s about, they were like, “Wait, wait, wait. Do you get to kiss him?” And I was like, “It’s not that kind of movie, so unfortunately no.” But from an acting standpoint it’s everything I could’ve hoped for. Even with this big of an ensemble, you still get a chance to make your impact. How did you find a way to understand her? I didn’t want to judge her, even though I think she
trying to find a way into something, I had to figure out the motivating factors. And what was motivating her behavior was her terrible fear that she was about to lose her husband, along with the respect in her household, her regard in the community — all of it. I think she just went the only way she knows how. In my mind it was kind of like the way an animal defends its turf.
Hiss-worthy
On evil deeds Asked if she’s ever done anything as violent as in “12 Years a Slave,” Paulson says, “No, never. Never. And I hope to never again, although I do feel that it was very important for the narrative that it be as strong as that, to really show what was endured.”
She does have a considerable amount of power over Master Epps, though. She does, she does. Because I think she thinks he’s weak, and when she sees his weakness she goes for it. Master Epps is really in love with Patsy [played by Lupita Nyong’o], but he hates himself for it. His own love for her is despicable to him and he knows it can’t be and it’s not right. My character plays on that fear in him and gets him to act out based on that ill feeling inside of himself. That’s where her power lies.
SARAH PAULSON The “American Horror Story” actress talks about doing despicable acts in “12 Years a Slave.”
MISTRESS OF THE HOUSE It sure isn’t. Every single person asked me when I told them. And I told them, “I’m doing this movie ‘12 Years a Slave.’ I play Michael Fassbender’s wife.”

Artist without archetype Dance. Miguel Gutierrez is a coveted and controversial performance artist. Miguel Gutierrez is anything but easily labeled. His work employs many forms of media, yet movement and sound are always at the fore. He creates bold, largescale conceptual works — as well as intimate, highly personal solo performances. Both are celebrated in the states and abroad. In his most recent production, “myendlesslove,” Gutierrez offers a “notquite-solo performance” dealing with trauma through imagery relating to sex, sorrow, romance and pleasure. Originally commissioned for 2006’s MIX Festival, “myendlesslove” is now at Abrons Art Center through Oct. 19. This erotic and confrontational work was created to counter Gutierrez’s ac-

Connor Voss — a tall, sculpted, underwear-clad blond specimen wearing a backward baseball cap — stands in the audience and holds a full-length mirror in front of Gutierrez. Seductions ensue, including a wild, nude aerobic workout. Gutierrez sings of the realization of love, and we are reminded of how alone he is. Looping sound and sight, Gutierrez ultimately lures Voss into the space — and intimacy abounds. Activating generational questions within queer culture, “myendlesslove” is a transparent, tragic response to heartbreak.

HALLOWEEN GUIDE
Who do you think you are? Hot costumes. These are the characters you’ll see everywhere this Walter White: Halloween — and some other ideas. Don’t want to have to start
those who don’t want to get confused with 15 other people at the party, we have some alternate ideas.
Google just released a list of the most popular Halloween costumes this year (according to the most-searched costumes in Google Shopping) and if you guessed that Walter White/Heisenberg and Miley Cyrus topped the list, then congratulations, you’re alive. However, some of the other top contenders for hottest Halloween costume of 2013 just might surprise you. Also on the list: the Minions from “Despicable Me,” Daenerys Targaryen from “Game of Thrones,” the dude in the fox suit from the viral video “What Does the Fox Say?” and the bearded hillbillies from “Duck Dynasty.” Yeah, that last one surprised us too. If you’re too lazy to come up with something original, we’ve rounded up some quick tips for getting into character this year. And for
your own meth lab to afford a costume? Go as Walter White from the early episodes, when he’s seen in nothing but his skivvies and a green apron (this is not for the modest). You can snag an apron pretty
much anywhere. That, plus a pair of wire-rimmed glasses and socks and shoes, and you’re cooking with gas (but hopefully not meth). Or: Go as another lead character from a recently-ended hit show. Dexter! All you need to go as America’s favorite psychopath is yet another apron, a brown shirt and “bloody” knife. You’re killing it!
Daenerys Targaryen: You can purchase a readyto-wear costume on the Web, but they’re pricey. Instead, buy a long blond wig, Grecianstyle dress, a pair of strappy sandals (most women own these already) and — the crowning detail (no pun intended) — a stuffed dragon toy. Now you’re ready to conquer civilizations — or the eligible dudes at the bar. Or: Go as another popular TV character — a zombie from “The Walking Dead.” It’s not sexy, but a zombie is timeless, and easy. Some undead face paint, a bit of fake blood, torn clothing and you’re ready to go. Brains!
SPIRIT COSTUMES
23
Twerk
Miley Cyrus Oh, the options are endless. We’re not going to suggest you go as “Wrecking Ball” Miley, though that would be an easy
costume (just go naked). If you’re not down with public nudity, the obvious choice is VMA Miley — complete with tiny bun “horns,” nude-colored bootie shorts (or regular shorts, if you’re modest), a bathing suit top (or tank top, if you’re modest) and a big foam finger (grab one at a sports store, or order one for cheap on eBay). And, of course, let your tongue hang out of your mouth all night long. You won’t be original, but you’ll be unmistakable. Or: You’re going to see more Mileys shivering in their skivvies en route to the bar this year than sexy kittens. Be awesome and go as Billy Ray Cyrus instead. All you need is a mullet wig, a cowboy shirt, a giant fake soul patch and a guitar slung around your neck. Done and done.
+ PLUS DJ duds
Daft Punk There are ways to get around dropping half your paycheck on a space helmet you will never wear again. Namely, buy a toy motorcycle helmet and spray-paint it gold or silver.

Learning how to communicate with your spouse about ďŹ nances is an important step in the marriage process. / MOODBOARD
Splitsville. Marriage doubts can translate to dollar signs, so experts advise signing a contract before walking down the aisle. When news broke about Kris and Bruce Jenner’s separation last week, Steven Eisman, partner and director of the matrimonial law department at Abrams Fensterman, was surprised they didn’t sign a prenuptial agreement before their 1991 wedding vows. “They both had a substantial net worth at the time of their marriage — they were both somewhat celebrities, he says. Years later, after clothing lines, endorsement deals and a reality show, their net worth will be an issue as they head to divorce court. Considering that the Jenners entered their
union with children from former marriages, Eisman says prenups aren’t unusual for second marriages because people want to take care of their children. Kardashian empire aside, Eisman sees more and more couples walking down the aisle at a later age, which means they’re more likely to have assets to protect. “They say, ‘I love you forever and ever, but in case it doesn’t work, I don’t want to share everything I acquired before we tied the knot.’ Sure, it’s his job, but Eisman says it is indeed better to be prepared and realistic. Kathleen E. Stoner, attorney and co-author of “Prenuptial Agreements: How to Write a Fair & Lasting Contract, says the cost of a prenup depends on how complicated it is and who drafts it. “High-end premarital agreements involving substantial assets could cost thousands of dollars. In contrast, simpler premarital agreements in some parts of the country

“They say, ‘I love you forever and ever, but in case it doesn’t work, I don’t want to share everything I acquired before we tied the knot.’ Steven Eisman Partner and director of the matrimonial law department at Abrams Fensterman
might run between $500 and $1,000. As for bringing up the sensitive topic with your spouse-to-be, she recommends talking early on and suggests that couples sign the contract at least three months before the big day. Stoner adds, “A prenup that is signed just days or hours before the wedding could be set aside under some state laws. Although it’s oh-sounromantic to talk about finances and properties, she says any relationship will involve money, so the “best thing for people to do is to learn how to have those conversations in a loving way. She also says that those conversations have to keep going throughout the relationship — it’s wise to review the prenup every few years to see if it still makes sense. “Some prenups even include a commitment to doing that, she says. Stoner says prenups are not for everyone, but she believes everyone should consider it and do their research. “Make a wellinformed decision about [prenups] based upon the individual circumstances and the laws of [the] state.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HEAR ‘I’M COMING OUT’ National Coming Out Day, which is upheld annually on Oct. 11, is a celebration of sexual orientation self-disclosures. But people “come out” about a variety of sexual matters every day. When someone in a relationship divulges sexu-
al orientation, gender identity or an alignment with certain sexual behaviors or fetishes, it can send the other partner reeling. My friend and fellow sexuality educator Cory Silverberg, M.Ed., is a founding member of Canada’s sex store
co-op Come As You Are. I asked him to weigh in on how couples can navigate any coming out experience — whether they’re asking for new moves in the bedroom or revealing a new penchant for people of the same sex.
We need you!
Dos and don’ts
•
DO remember that what is (and should be) an experience of self-expression for one partner could feel like a bomb has dropped on the other. “When someone comes out, they don’t come out alone,” says Silverberg. “For their partner, it can feel like all sorts of things, including betrayal.”
•
DON’T assume anyone’s identity— including your own — is static. People are more like dimmers mers than on/off light switches. “We are always in the process of becoming ourselves,” Silverberg proposes.
•
DON’T believe yourr entire relationship has been a lie. “If someone comes out to you, it may not only feel like things have changed — it could also feel like you have to reevaluate everything that was. It doesn’t have to be this way,” he says. “It doesn’t mean there wasn’t love or commitment. It may not even mean there wasn’t good sex. There may have been all of those things.”

“Coming out” is not just for gay people — being honest about your problems and questions is essential to any relationship. / WAVEBREAK MEDIA
•
DON’T assume you can’t talk to other people about
it. “This is the kind of thing that’s very difficult to process,” suggests Silverberg. “If my partner comes out, it’s really important for me to have other people I can talk to and express my feelings with. My partner may not want to hear those things. It’s important that both people have someone else to talk to.” •
DO stay together, if warranted. “Be prepared to give it some time,” he adv advises. “We know kno sometimes relationships re are bumpy and a ssometimes they’re smooth. th This Th will probably be a bumpy time. Know that the first reaction might not be the best reaction.”
•
DO break up, if needed. Relationships are about compatibility, and when someone changes it could signal newfound incompatibility. “Sometimes, it does mean the end of the relationship. If that’s the case, it’s sad, but it might also be OK. This idea that we’re supposed to be in relationships for the rest of our lives is just one idea of [what a] relationship is,” Silverberg says.

It’s screaming season at the city’s haunted houses, and Halloween lovers are clasping each other’s clammy hands to get in line. A heads-up for those who want to get their scare on the cheap: Most haunted houses have lower prices for advanced tickets.

Visitors stumbling through the bloodspattered rooms can be prepared to be spooked by psychopaths who didn’t just haunt the real world; they actually walked among us. $20-60, Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center, 107 Suffolk St., 1-855-2352867, www.nightmarenyc.com

HALLOWEEN GUIDE
www.metro.us Thursday, October 17, 2013
Advice. Experts talk All Hallows’ Eve essentials. Forget a frightening face mask or the most ferocious fangs; the scariest part of Halloween can be the planning. Pumpkin carving means an inevitable mess. Every spooky snack seems to have been done before (does anyone really like witch-hand popcorn bags?). We get expert help to break down the essentials of a festive Halloween party that will impress both your martini-loving girlfriends and their 5-year-olds. All we’re leaving up to you is the costume.
Decoration Maybe you don’t have the space — or the energy — to recreate Elvira’s haunted house. As home entertaining and lifestyle expert Cheryl Najafi explains, less can be more. “It can be as simple as spider webs,” she says. One of Najafi’s favorite festive decorations, a “spider web” simply consists of cloth webbing, available at craft or party stores. “Just tack them up on one side of the doorway, and pull them across the entryway onto another side so people have to duck to come in,” she says. “It just kind of sets the mood that you’re festive and having fun with the holiday.” Spider webbing can also shift your decor from fall to frightening. “I love using the mini pumpkins in a bowl,” Najafi says, offering another space-
saving trick. “You can create a Halloween look and feel by using spider webbing across the table, underneath the bowl.”
26
Halloween party planning made scary easy
Spooky supplies While Najafi swears by craft stores like Michaels and Hobby Lobby, she says you don’t necessarily have to make a special trip for your spooky decorations. “You can also go, surprisingly enough, to grocery stores,” she says. “They have an amazing collection of things that you don’t see at Michaels because they’re already done for you. Keep your eye out for little kiosks with things like candy googly eyes.” Make sure to decorate your space ahead of time, reserving the day of the party for grub. “I find that it takes so little time to decorate as compared to prepping food, but if you have them together, it seems like both are overwhelming,” Najafi says.
Food You don’t have to be artsy to make even the most creative culinary concoctions. Take Najafi’s “Creepy Crawly Deviled Eggs,” for example. “The eggs just have a black olive cut in half, and [olive] slivers for the legs. This takes absolutely no skill whatsoever,” she says.

“In a city like New York, it’s hard to pick a favorite spot because there are many great restaurants, but one of my go-to places is Extra Virgin in the West Village (259 W. Fourth St., 212-691-9359). I love it because it’s a lively vibe in an intimate atmosphere and the food is incredible. The chef is my good friend Joey Fortunato, who I actually worked with as his sous
chef a million years ago! You really can’t go wrong with any of the pastas, but one of my favorites is the baked lasagna on Monday nights. I also love the grilled halibut that’s served with fresh herbs, tomato carpaccio, arugula and extra virgin olive oil.” Murphy will be at Friday’s Burger Bash, Saturday’s Taste New York Brunch and Sunday’s Bloody Mary Brunch.
Egg noodles — they are the Asian version of carbonara!” Burrell will be at Sunday’s Grand Tasting and the Sunday Slices pizza party.

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.
Ignorance is bliss Ignorance of money, sovereignty and our Constitution must be bliss for our legislators. Smart sovereign leaders can never default on their debts because money is made by fiat: laws declaring paper, gold or digits as money that is issued, not borrowed, and circulates freely and without debt. However, our government mistakenly acts like a household and borrows money, money that it has the power to make itself without interest. The Constitution gave it the right to coin money. So why don’t they? DAVID SNIECKUS, VIA EMAIL
Don’t dread the dreads As a Rastafarian and a proud American, I am tired of facing judgments and discrimination based on my looks (I have dreads, etc). Bob Marley teaches us that love and peace are the only way, but it’s hard when everyone looks at you
like you are a straight-out fool. I’ve been treated badly by cops, firemen, hospital security guards and even fast-food workers. Come on, peeps, let’s get together and be all right. JIMMY RUSTLER, VIA EMAIL
Furlough isn’t end of the world Furloughed government workers have to obtain money to live now, even taking out loans, but it should be mentioned when the partial government shutdown is over they will receive full back pay. The Republican-controlled House of Congress already approved. So when they receive their back pay, the loans can be fully repaid, assuming the workers are financially responsible people. Shifting allegiances
Bars change, but fandom never does Zapatka and Foote were once regulars at the Boston-friendly Riviera Cafe and Sports Bar in the West Village, but they and a couple dozen other people switched their allegiance to Professor Thom’s when it opened just a year after the breakthrough World Series win. Bronx bean-eaters. Red Sox fans are living among us New Yorkers — and they’re out in droves this postseason. Horton Foote Jr. is watching the game from a table in the back of Professor Thom’s, the noted Boston sports bar on 2nd Avenue and 14th Street. It’s barely 5 p.m. on a Tuesday and the bar is getting more crowded by the minute. “I still get the feeling, when I see a New Yorker with a Yankees hat — even though we’re in New York — that they’re just doing it to piss me off,” Foote, 60, says with a laugh. He glances at the TV screen. It’s the bottom of the fourth of Game 3 of the ALCS and Foote’s be-

In the days before the Sox finally broke their notorious curse by winning the 2004 World Series, the fierce old rivalry combined with a gnawing sense of inferiority to make things decidedly unpleasant for Boston loyalists brave or perverse enough to make their home here. years, a strong team still in the running in October and their arch-nemesis failing to even make the playoffs — life in enemy territory is not just better, it’s positively grand. Seated across from Foote is Rhonda Zapatka, 40, who grew up in Boylston, Mass., but has lived in Manhattan for 15 years. She’s currently working on a book about her experience. One title she briefly considered and then discarded as “too chick-lit” was “Sox and the City.” “It’s much easier to be a Sox fan in New York now,” she says. “But still, I almost feel like I live a double life. It’s amazing how much being a Sox fan affects every aspect of your life.”
