Bloomberg is a fan of women in high heels Mayor Michael Bloomberg has apparently succumbed once again to his tendency to be a little bit too candid around reporters at posh events. In a New Yorker magazine write-up of a ritzy party for the memoir of the co-founder of Jimmy Choo, the mayor is quoted expressing his appreciation for heels — and women. “I like women, and I think that they look stunning in high heels — not that they look bad without high heels,” the mayor reportedly said. The mayor caught heat several months ago when a January New York Magazine profile of City Council Speaker Christine Quinn included an anecdote quoting Quinn joking that the mayor was going to yell at her for not wearing heels. At the book party, the mayor continued, “But, if I were a woman, I think I would wear high heels.” DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

Seaport poised for glassy new Pier 17 Redevelopment. The controversial makeover of Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport has begun. “The new Pier 17 will inject the Seaport with new life and fresh energy,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg at the pier’s groundbreaking yesterday. The event marked the start of the pier’s $200 million transformation by the Howard Hughes Corporation, which will replace the
market with a 300-squarefoot glass complex. “The redeveloped Seaport will create an unrivaled destination that will become the most vibrant in Lower Manhattan,” the company’s CEO David Weinreb said. Not everyone is pleased with what’s to come. Several community members have protested the plans, saying they will only contribute to the commercialization of a historic area already crippled by superstorm Sandy. “It has been a terrible thing to see what should be the revitalization of a
historic neighborhood be sullied by natural disaster and corporate greed,” said Simeon Bankoff, executive director of the Historic Districts Council. But the mayor said the plans would help the Seaport in the long run. “The best days are still to come for the Seaport,” he said. By the numbers

The city’s so-called “soda ban” will have yet another day in court. New York state’s highest court agreed yesterday to hear Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s appeal of a decision striking down a law limiting the size of some sugary drinks sold in the city to 16 ounces. The Court of Appeals will not hear the case until after Bloomberg leaves office. While Democratic

mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio previously said he supports the ban, Republican Joe Lhota said he would drop the appeal. The court made the decision after lower courts deemed the cap an overreach of executive power. The American Beverage Association, which petitioned against the law, said it was confident in previous decisions. ANNA SANDERS

Spooky fun. Village Halloween Parade reaches funding goal Revelers, don’t despair: The Village Halloween Parade is back on. Organizers of the iconic Greenwich Village event surpassed their $50,000 fundraising goal. Organizer Jeanne Fleming set up a Kickstarter page to save the event after funds were lost when the parade was cancelled after superstorm Sandy. Fleming said she was “overwhelmed” by the outpouring of support from a small group of more than 800 backers.

The campaign raised $50,668. Fleming said additional funds would go toward a “hero’s float” honoring community leaders after Sandy.
“What I think we’ve come to realize over this course of this campaign was that this was like a gathering of the tribe,” she said. “It came from people who give beyond themselves.” ANNA SANDERS

Banksy’s recent Twin Towers piece in Tribeca, featuring an orange flower where the first plane hit on Sept. 11, 2001, is now protected by plexiglass. The towers have a streetside frame around them now, almost a Banksyesque play on his promise to use New York City as a sort of gallery space for the month of October. Though the piece was added a couple of days ago, a stream of viewers stopped by to take photos with it on Thursday. There were rumors that the piece was being watched by a guard, but

the most likely candidate, a young man with sunglasses and a cap pulled over his eyes, denied being assigned to guard the piece. Two other young men hurried up to snap a photo of the piece. Sonia Hebel, 45, who lives in the Village and stopped with her daughter Rae, almost 3, chatted with them and they showed her their photos of other Banksy New York pieces. Hebel pointed out a fresh painting that was difficult for most of the people around to parse out. “Look at that,” she said. “‘Banksy is French.’ Isn’t it cool?” “But he’s British,” a girl in her 20s said. “Who knows?” Hebel said.

Shocking. A security guard stopped a teen girl he thought was shoplifting and found a horrible surprise.
Victoria’s Secret
Store personnel at the Victoria’s Secret store in Herald Square made a shocking discovery when they stopped a teenage girl to search her bag. The NYPD said two 17-year-old girls were stopped in the store by a security guard who believed they were shoplifting. The

guard searched one of the their bags and discovered the remains of a dead fetus or newborn. The remains were wrapped in a black plastic bag, a law enforcement official said, which was wrapped in clothing. Police said they do not
know the stage of development of the remains. The medical examiner will determine when the baby was delivered and if it was born alive. A police source said the girl told responding officers that she miscarried yesterday afternoon at her friend’s house in Queens. She said she was six months pregnant. The girl was taken to Bellevue Hospital, police said. Her friend was taken into custody by police for questioning. The investigation is ongoing, police said.

New evidence in the homicide case of Marisha Cheong, who went missing last year and was found dead two months later, has cops looking for a mystery woman
with possible ties to the incident. Police have released new video they believe shows a female leading Cheong from her home. Cheong was reported missing in December 2012. On Feb. 16, 2013, a body that washed up in Breezy Point was identified as Cheong. In the new surveil-
lance video, apparently taken from a home across the street from the one where Cheong lived with her boyfriend, a woman can be seen walking with Cheong. At one point Cheong appears to pull back and try to walk away, but the woman grabs her and drags her off. DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

President Barack Obama scolded congressional Republicans on Thursday, hours after a fiscal crisis was narrowly averted and called on his opponents to help repair the economic damage caused by a 16-day U.S. government shutdown and a close brush with a debt default. Obama stressed that he is willing to work with lawmakers wherever they can agree, but the tone he struck amounted to a rebuke of Republicans, whom Americans largely
blame for pushing the United States to the brink of an economic calamity. “The American people are completely fed up with Washington, said Obama in a White House speech attended by many of the aides who worked day and night through the various stages of the latest fiscal stalemate. Hours after he signed into law a bill hastily cobbled together to end the crisis, Obama said events over the past two weeks had inflicted “completely unnecessary damage on the U.S. economy. REUTERS

DiďŹƒcult task
Dim hopes that new panel can agree on budget Washington’s last-minute deal to reopen the government and avert a default sets up the latest congressional committee to try to reach a budget compromise, but some lawmakers say the panel faces an extremely difficult task. The group of Democrats and Republicans from the Senate and House of Representatives is expected to start working in coming days and would have to report recommendations by Dec. 13.
Post-crisis
Obama tells Congress to get to work President Barack Obama urged Congress to turn to matters like immigration reform on Thursday as Washington picked up the pieces from a destructive fiscal crisis that has slowed the U.S. economy and undermined the country’s international standing.
Less than 12 hours after he signed a bill that ended a 16-day partial government shutdown and averted a catastrophic default, Obama on Thursday said lawmakers must stop lurching from crisis to crisis and seek common ground on issues that also include farm policy and long-term budget issues. “All my friends in Congress have to understand that how business is done in this town has got to
change. Because we’ve all got a lot of work to do, he said at the White House. On Capitol Hill, Republican and Democratic negotiators held their first meeting to discuss the long-term budget fixes that have proven elusive over the past three years. The panel is supposed to reach agreement by Dec. 13, but there are no guarantees it will succeed where similar efforts have failed. REUTERS

Fiscal policy fight may dampen US economic growth U.S. economic growth this quarter is likely to be less robust than forecast last month given the erosion of confidence in the wake of the nasty fight over fiscal policy, a Reuters survey showed on Thursday. The fourth quarter had
been expected to mark the transition to a stronger pace of expansion. But economists have grown less optimistic after the budget tussle that shut down parts of the government and left the nation flirting with a historic debt default. You can hardly hear yourself think in D.C. right now over the sound of Republicans wailing in the streets and tearing their clothing. Just this morning I passed a GOP congressman kneeling in front of the Heritage Foundation, shaking his fists at the sky and shrieking, “Why? Why? Why?” Not really, but pretty close. The GOP’s budget battle with the White House was supposed to be a clash of titans, but it turned out more like Pee-wee Herman versus Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao. President Barack Obama (or ThunderPunch as he may now be known) celebrated his victory by lecturing his foes on their foolishness, by reassuring Americans that their government is fantastic, and by politely suggesting if we can all just focus on our areas of agreement (I think we’re still fine on the Arbor Day designation), life will be good again. That last item is a fair point, and certainly he is not the first to raise it. Quoted

Still broken Here are a few other things worth remembering amid the Republican mourning and the Democratic crowing. •
Republicans do not believe they are wrong. Listen to what is being said in all these postmortem interviews. GOPers broadly agree that their Tea Party tactics were misguided. But they still don’t like Obamacare, they still believe it will bankrupt the country and they still know that tens of millions of Americans share that concern. And on the broader issue of wanting a smaller government, they are as committed as ever.
•
Many Democrats are brushing aside suggestions that they bear any blame for what happened. The polls suggest that is a bad idea. Yes, voters blame Republicans more, but that’s the only reason the Dems are looking comparatively good right now. Public approval for political leaders of all stripes sank during this debacle. For it to get any lower we’d have to dig a basement.
•
Washington is still broken. It may be even worse. There is little to no evidence that the appetite for cooperation is improving, no matter what the president or anyone else hopes.

Playing her age
Forever young
CHLOE GRACE MORETZ
You still have many years of playing a teenager ahead of you. We have 25-year-olds playing teenagers. That’s the thing. When I’m 20, I’m going to stay playing 20. At 25, the last thing I want to do is go backward. Why would I want to play a character that’s younger than me? The 20- to 25-year-old market is very hard. You have Jennifer Lawrence. You have Michelle Williams even playing that age. There’s Mia Wasikowska. There’s so many brilliant actresses up there that you’re going, “Where does it end?” Where’s the niche that you can just crawl into?
The star of “Carrie” is glad she gets to skip high school.
‘I DON’T LIKE TEENAGERS’
So what’s your niche? I think it’s just realism, to be honest. I think my strong suit is being able to show realism within some of the most unrealistic characters. That’s what I like to do. GETTY IMAGES

Chloe Grace Moretz has carved out a nice place for herself in Hollywood as a child and teen actor who can handle very, very grown-up material (including the very R-rated “KickAss” films). But, everyone has to grow up sometime. With the remake of “Carrie,” she takes on the most iconic high school wallflower in film history — but going forward, she’s looking to leave the teenagers behind. That’s convenient because they terrify her. This might very well be the quietest character you’ve ever played. It’s the most vulnerable I’ve ever been, for sure. This character is the opposite of who I am. But, at the same time it’s almost closer to my true self. I’m incredibly naive compared to my friends. She’s definitely the most innocent I’ve ever played. But, at the same time it was almost easier to jump into [this character] than playing, like, a bitch, because I’m not very good at doing that. It’s harder for me to play a fake, stuck-up girl than it is for me to play vulnerable. Why do you think you’ve maintained that level of naivete compared to your

friends? I think it’s because I literally have lived a more naive life. They have to deal with, like, boys and everything. They deal with 10 times as much as I do [in high school]. I deal with things that are way above my head. You learn quickly and you move quickly. I’ve been home-schooled since I was 9, so it’s like I haven’t been interacting with copious amounts of teenagers since I was 9 years old. You got off lucky. I think so too. I don’t like teenagers. They’re really scary. They’re unpredictable because they’re just, like, dumb. They don’t even know what they’re doing, and they just bumble around and make stupid mistakes and they’re like, “Oh, I didn’t
mean to do that. I regret that.” I’ve never regretted anything in my life because I cognizably make every decision. I’ve messed up before, but I’ve never regretted anything. You’ve really made a name for yourself appearing in more mature movies. Is there a transition you have to make now that actresses your age are catching up? I think the transition is all age. It’s saying, “Can you play the adult characters and not be overly sexualized?” It really is going, “I want to play the adult characters, but I’m not going to do what a 20-yearold does.”

“12 Years a Slave” comes to theaters in the guise of a respectable Oscargobbler, reminding us of an accepted fact: Slavery was/is bad. It needs to say more than that, and it does. With relentlessly calm intensity, it depicts the institution as a machine — a pitiless machine that’s countered with pitiless direction from filmmaker Steve McQueen. His cameras stare unblinkingly at an institution at work. It’s one thing to say it bred inhumanity; it’s another to show it in action. The material comes

from the memoirs of Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free man from the North who was kidnapped down South. Rechristened “Platt,” he goes from a nice plantation that isn’t so nice, to a cruel one, where his master is a drunken lout (Michael Fassbender). He keeps his head down, but his hands aren’t clean: He has to avert his eyes, saying and doing nothing, as children are stolen from their mothers, as slaves have their backs destroyed by whips. When his 12 years are finally up, he has to stare ahead so as not to see those he leaves behind. These events may be comfortably in the past, but the film brings them back to horrific life.

Review ‘Escape Plan’ Director: Mikael Hafstrom Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger Rating: R
•••••
Is Arnold Schwarzenegger sleeping back there? / ALAN MARKFIELD
Sylvester Stallone plays Ray Breslin, a man who breaks into prisons for a living. He runs out of luck when he’s cut off from his support team and trapped in a quasi-futuristic CIA black site that looks like a cheaply decorated Hollywood soundstage. Our hero’s only hope is a suspiciously friendly detainee, magnificently
named Emil Rottmayer and played with contagious self-delight by Schwarzenegger. Stallone hands the movie over to Schwarzenegger, rolling his eyes while his sidekick indulges in all manner of giddy vulgarities and wannabe catchphrases. Whether barking a phony religious tirade in German
or announcing, “You hit like a vegetarian,” Schwarzenegger hasn’t been this fun in decades. It’s much too long, but in the end, “Escape Plan” knows that we all came to see Stallone get into a grunty, bare-knuckle brawl while Schwarzenegger shoulders an enormous machine gun. SEAN BURNS

More than just an awesome surname It’s no secret that Julian Assange isn’t thrilled about the new film “The Fifth Estate,” in which “Sherlock” star Benedict Cumberbatch plays the embattled founder of the information sharing website WikiLeaks. The site even published email correspondence between Assange and Cumberbatch, in which the actor sought a meeting with the activist — only to be asked not to do the film. Cumberbatch admits that his correspondence with Assange — who told the Hollywood Foreign Press he thinks “The Fifth Estate” is “destined to be a box office failure” — was brief. “It was sort of expected, and his arguments were very strong. And I had some very strong counterarguments,” Cumberbatch says. “I would have loved to have met him. I think like any artist, being in front of a live subject is far more productive than working from a photograph,” Cumberbatch says, a tinge of remorse in his voice. “I sadly didn’t get the chance to do that, but I quite respect his standpoint. And I reasoned in my communication with him that I thought it was not totally well-founded, that I think there was a lot to celebrate in our version of the story. Because what it does is bring back into focus how important WikiLeaks is as an idea and the integrity of that idea, personal politics aside.” Cumberbatch, of course, pressed on despite his subject’s disapproval. And portraying Assange on-screen has led to the actor having to field questions about government activities, politics and the security industry. “You do have to become an instant overnight expert, and that can be quite daunting,” he admits. “I am an actor. I’m not a political activist. I’m not a founder of a website.

I’m not a lawyer. I’m not an expert pundit. I’ve touched on what I’ve needed to grasp to try and manufacture a characterization, and I’m the first person to hold my hand up and say that I’m an amateur in all
other classes other than my chosen profession.” And while the movie itself may be finished, there are new developments almost daily connected to WikiLeaks and Assange’s fate. “[Julian and I] are weirdly tied together now,” Cumberbatch admits. “With Julian and history, it’s a ways down the line as to how we get an objective perspective on this — if ever — because I think that the arguments and the context for the story are just going to keep evolving. I think we’re living through fascinating times.”

They call CMJ a marathon for good reason. At any point between Tuesday afternoon and Sunday, there are dozens of showcases and countless bands with buzz — from the local to the international — playing for a shot at being “picked up by the press or the music industry. While many bands attempt to revive music of foregone eras, most miss the mark. Boston’s Quilt, a young four-piece who take a chapter out of ‘60s psychedelia, eloquently compose organic, full-bodied tracks. Musicianship is first and foremost for the rollicking folk group, who occasionally hits patches of visceral garage rock.

Bishop Nehru rocked Webster Hall on Wednesday. LENYON WHITAKER/METRO
Hook-laden, fuzzy guitar rock seems to be done best in the U.K. Occasionally bordering on prototype punk, Eagulls’ frontman George Mitchell carries their sound with fervent shout-singing in a smug English accent. Metallic guitars and reverb-
heavy riffs complement the package of in-yourface tunes. With a background in the hard-core scene, the five-piece hit hard but not too hard to alienate garage rock disciples. The 17-year-old rapper Bishop Nehru has been one of the most hyped hip-hop up-and-comers at this CMJ, and not without reason. He has caught the attention of Wu-Tang, who he toured with, MF Doom, who he is currently working with and multiple hip-hop sites that have praised his first mixtape “Nehruvia.â€? Reminiscent of a young Nas, his flow is ahead of its time and fits perfectly with the beat. Add in great stage presence and the ability to control the crowd, and you have the complete package. KISS rocks the runway Nothing says rock ‘n’ roll like a runway show (actually, just kidding, that doesn’t say rock ‘n’ roll at all). Here is Gene Simmons of KISS on the runway during the Christian Dada show as part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo on Thursday in Japan.
Outcry over Melissa McCarthy Elle cover Oh! Hey! Elle put an overweight woman on their cover — the fantastically amazing Melissa McCarthy. Kudos to them! But sadly, they also covered her up so much on their annual “Women in Hollywood” issue that it looks like she’s wearing a sleeping bag. Think about it — they would have never let Sandra Bullock not show any skin. So, let the public outcry begin! What do you think? Is this a cop-out by Elle? Do you want to see McCarthy showing a bit more skin per traditional covers? Write in to let me know.

“On all of our shoots, our stylists work with the stars to choose pieces they feel good in, and this is no different: Melissa loved this look, and is gorgeous on our cover. We are thrilled to honor her as one of our Women in Hollywood this year.” A spokesperson for Elle said in a statement

Kardashian and West don’t know the meaning of ‘private message’ Is comedic public sexting a thing? Kanye West is trying to make it a thing. Kim Kardashian posted this slinky selfie on Instagram m last night, apropos of nothing. We can’t know what was going on in her head, since the only caption was #nofilter. lter Maybe she was showing off how she’s lost the baby weight. Maybe she wanted to see how her new white bathing suit fit in the back, and she is unaware that it’s possible to take a picture and not post it on the Internet. Was she applying to be an American Apparel model? Or maybe she was

trying to get her man’s attention. If it’s that last one, West didn’t miss a beat. “HEADING HOME NOW” he wrote back, with a link to Kim’s picture of her badonkadonk.

Sadly — or not — there was no more oversharing to be had after West got home. Hope they had a nice night. I’m glad they stopped tweeting about it. MELINDA TAUB

Re: ‘Furlough isn’t the end of the world’ (Metro, Oct. 17) Letter writer Stanley Gnoza’s request that furloughed workers, who will be compensated for their lost wages, instead lose their vacation time, is misguided. Did they choose to be ordered home without pay by a government unable to function? This is as ridiculous as asking government workers to forgo health benefits, in order to increase the burden on the Affordable Care Act, which is designed to benefit those with no insurance, not to deprive people of the benefits they have. If “taxpayers” aren’t happy with the shenanigans, they have a ready legal response: Vote for better representatives.

Mr. Gnoza, you must not know any federal employees or about the dynamics of household income. If someone loses an income, they will miss all sorts of payments. These employees have not chosen to not go to work, but are dealing with the unfortunate outcomes. You suggest that because the government shuts down, an employee should miss a wedding or a scheduled trip with their family, due to no fault of their own? STEVE AUSTIN, VIA EMAIL

Kidd’s No. 5 now raised to rafters NBA. The Nets’ new head coach becomes the first player to have his number retired in Brooklyn. Jason Kidd stood at the 3-point arc and watched his No. 5 head to the Barclays Center rafters while music and fireworks blared. The motivation to become someone worthy of such an achievement started way back in high school. Kidd, whose 12,091 assists are second-most in NBA history, saw that vision come to fruition before Thursday night’s preseason game with Miami when the Nets made him the sixth player in franchise history to have his number retired. During the brief ceremony, Kidd was honored in speeches by former general manager Rod Thorn and partner Dmitry Razumov. Thorn marveled at acquiring a player who transformed a 26-win team to an Eastern Conference champion while Razumov recalled meeting Kidd during a party at the 2010 All-Star Game as Mikhail Prokhorov was preparing to buy the team. Kidd mentioned moti-

jersey hanging there.” Like many of his comments leading up to the ceremony, Kidd kept his comments brief and during the ceremony said he was humbled at the occasion. The Nets also played tributes to Kidd from former teammates on the video board during the game.

Jets vs. Patriots: 3 things to watch front made it incredibly difficult for New England to get its passing game going. If the Jets defense can get to Brady, then it will be all the more difficult for him to connect with a wide receiver corps that is young and inexperienced.
The Jets face their biggest rival on Sunday with not only a chance to beat a team their fans love to hate, but also take a big step forward toward their playoff goals. The Patriots come into this game beat up after Sunday’s dramatic comeback against the Saints. We look at three stories to watch for in Sunday’s game (1 p.m., CBS):

Coughlin reiterates belief in Manning The Giants have many questions that need answering, but the one head coach Tom Coughlin refuses to even dignify with much of a response is the status of his starting quarterback. Eli Manning has struggled mightily this season, as Coughlin has acknowledged, noting Manning’s league-high 15 interceptions. But for anyone to think the two-time Super Bowl MVP’s standing with the team is up in the air, the coach said is a silly notion. The question about Manning’s starting position was initially brought up Wednesday. Coughlin brushed it off then, but felt the need to reiterate it again before Thursday’s practice in hopes of finally putting such talk to rest. “He’s the guy. We’re going to win again with Eli,” said Coughlin. “We’re going to improve. ... And when we do, we’ll start to see the checkered flag at the end of a ball game.” TONY WILLIAMS

Knicks coach: No free agent talk, Melo Knicks head coach Mike Woodson doesn’t sound too happy about Carmelo Anthony’s recent free agent comments. “If he’s going to test it, he’s got to test it. That’s on him,” Woodson said. “But at this point, he’s got to worry about this season and this season only.”
