New app shows ‘ProximiT’ of incoming MBTA trains Subway assistance. The creators of a new train tracking app want to help passengers avoid needless waits at their local T station. A couple of Cambridge engineers have put their skills to use and developed an app that will help their fellow MBTA passengers know whether they should mosey to their T station or make a mad dash. On Oct. 18, Central Square residents and Red Line riders Randy Dailey and Jeff Lopes released ProximiT, a free iPhone app that offers location-based alerts and tracking for the MBTA’s Red, Orange and Blue lines. While inside the app, which creators refer to as “a real-time personal assistant” for subway riders, users are able to view the next arrival times for nearby train stations. Outside of the app, notifications are sent out whenever a user gets within a block of their “favorite” MBTA station. In addition to schedule and delay information, the app also alerts users to construction and elevator outages. ProximiT, however, does not offer information on Green Line service because the MBTA does not yet provide real-time data for that line. Both former Microsoft engineers, the friends decided to launch the app after getting frustrated with what they considered to be a lack of “usable subway companions.”

“I want to know, ‘Do I have time to go to Starbucks, or do I want to go straight to the station?’” said Lopes, who now works near Park Street station. Although there are apps that have offered service information, Lopes said the technology was often difficult to navigate. The goal for ProximiT was to offer users a “seamless” experience that trumps the competition. “I think some of the exist-

ing apps have just taken the [service information] and exposed it in a very basic way,” he said of competitor apps, like Catch the T. ProximiT has added 600 active users daily since its release, according to Dailey, and has held a steady rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. “It’s vastly exceeded our expectations. ... I think we had something that’s really wellpolished for the real-time sce-
narios. Location is a first-class citizen for us. We think [the app] is pretty high quality,” he said. The pair prioritized the user experience while inside the app, and said they aimed to provide an engaging user experience for viewing the next train arrival times for nearby train stations. For now, the pair are focusing the app on the T’s light rail, but said there has been a lot of interest in the bus lines. “There is a much bigger interest in getting bus information over the commuter rail. We may start working on that in a few months,” said Dailey.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, besieged by bad news about the new government health care website, sought this weekend to highlight a portion of the complex system that she said is working well. In an upbeat blog post on Saturday, Sebelius released statistics to illustrate the volume of interest in the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, and the speed of the “data hub,” one piece of the complex system behind HealthCare.gov. Sebelius praised the performance of the data hub, which connects to the Social Security Administration and Internal Revenue Service to verify applicants’ identity and income.

Lou Reed dead at the age of 71 Glam rock. He took us for a “Walk on the Wild Side” in the 1970s. Lou Reed was reported dead at the age of 71 yesterday due to complications from a liverrelated ailment. The singer and guitarist first attracted attention in the late ’60s as the leader of the Velvet Underground, a group that began as an Andy Warhol project, which combined a sense of the avant-garde with pop music. With Reed’s poetic lyrics and the band’s always experimental (and sometimes dissonant) approach, they arguably serve as the starting point for alternative rock. Though the Velvet Underground were not commercially successful, their influence was widespread, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Reed went on to collabo-
rate with David Bowie in the ’70s, finding chart success with “Walk on the Wild Side” and carving out a niche for himself in the glam rock movement. Reed was never content to compromise or even do what his growing fanbase expected. Over the years he released many albums that listeners and critics alike had difficulty with, but for every unexpected left turn his muse took, Reed remained a figurehead for the movement he started and his tours were successful. He also stayed invested in the arts until his death, mentoring younger artists and even recently writing a review of Kanye West’s “Yeezus” on The Talkhouse. For a time, Reed was infamous for his substance abuse, but he had cleaned up in his later years, finding new inspiration in tai chi.

A German newspaper said yesterday that U.S. President Barack Obama knew his intelligence service was eavesdropping on Angela Merkel as long ago as 2010, contradicting reports that he had told the German leader he did not know. Germany received information this week that the U.S. National Security Agency had bugged Merkel’s mobile phone, prompting Berlin to summon the U.S. ambassador, a move unprecedented in post-war relations between the close allies. The NSA denied that Obama had been informed about the operation by the NSA chief in 2010, as reported by the German newspaper. Citing a source in Merkel’s office, other German media have reported that Obama apologized to Merkel when she called him on Wednesday, and told her
that he would have stopped the bugging happening had he known about it. But Bild am Sonntag, citing a “U.S. intelligence worker involved in the NSA operation against Merkel”, said NSA chief General Keith Alexander informed Obama in person about it in 2010. REUTERS

Phones take over college classrooms On the phone

A student taps away at her phone in a class with professor Audrey J. Murrell, who incorporates phones into her lessons. / COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, U. OF PITTSBURGH
A new report conducted by Barney McCoy, associate professor of broadcasting at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, shows more than 90 percent of surveyed students admit to using mobile devices in class for unrelated activities. The results of the report, published recently by the Journal of Media Education, show that texting was the No. 1 activity for students on their phones in class, making educators create no-tech policies. Dr. Aaron J. Moore, associate professor of journalism at Rider University, explains: “Texting took over the classroom to the
point [that] if I continually had to keep asking students to stop texting, it would ruin the flow of class. In fact, Moore previously had a no-device classroom rule until it became too much to police. He’s at the point of thinking, “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em — with a caveat, that is: Moore incorporated the devices as part of his curriculum. “I teach public relations classes so we do a lot of tweeting. We use hashtags and find examples of those using social media in tactical and successful ways. Live tweeting is like a laboratory in action. Students can also ‘converse’ with professionals when tweeting in classes. They can also tweet their friends — but that is worth the risk. Audrey J. Murrell, associate dean and associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s College of Business Administration, agrees with Moore’s mind-set. Realizing mobile devices are here to stay, Murrell supports students using technology educationally. “A creative solution is to try to incorporate them
One student who doesn’t
“I don’t text in class because I find it way too distracting. My professors go through the lecture really quickly and reading or sending even one short message inhibits my ability to take everything in. My professor last year had an anti-phone and anticomputer policy. If she saw you using electronics during class, she’d mark you absent for the day, which would hurt your participation grade. Jillian Sandler, senior, Northwestern University
into the classroom activities, thus giving a purpose to the use of this technology. Murrell says focus is imperative when using the devices. “It’s important to not simply take in the information, but to really understand what is being communicated in the classroom. This takes focus, and one’s focus is divided while texting, she says. “Also, the impression you give to faculty and peers is part of your personal brand. Think about what it would mean to you if you were communicating something important and you saw the other
person text. What impression would that leave for you? Though he incorporates tweeting, Moore‘s students tarnish their “personal brand if they text during class — students receive a professional grade. “If you text during class, I will drop your grade because it is not professional, he says. “It is disrespectful to talk to a class and have texting. Why would you antagonize the person responsible for giving the grade?

Jon Cryer me a river OK, maybe it’s because I’m writing this while fighting a Halloween party-induced hangover of truly terrifying proportions, but when I read this item on TMZ I almost went all Chris Brown on my computer. Jon Cryer (aka the dude that is not Charlie Sheen or Ashton Kutcher from “Two and a Half Men”) is in a court battle with his ex-wife, who is asking for $88,000 a month in child support. Because their son is apparently being humiliated at school. For being poor. Excuse me for one minute while I jump out of this window. Cryer’s ex, Sarah Trigger, is currently receiving a piddly $8,000 a month, which is not enough to keep their son Charlie from being poorshamed at his private school. For example, Charlie’s friends get to go on “exotic vacations in the summer and winter, like Europe and Thailand.” This kid Charlie, on the other hand, has to summer on, like, the Cape or something, like some com-

mon schmuck. Life is hard. On the one hand, if my ex were raking in millions for a crappy, inexplicably popular (no, f’real, who watches that show?) sitcom I’d probably have my fat palm out too. On the other hand, being embarrassed about being “poor” is not a claim that should hold up in court. Or in life. On a third hand, if this kid is actually being bullied for appearing to be middle class, or whatever, that’s a whole other issue. Sort of makes you yearn for the good old days, when kids were just stuffed into lockers for being nerds.
THE WORD
Chris Brown’s felonious weekend
Never trust a dude with a throat tattoo, that’s my policy. Or a dude who thinks it’s OK to punch ladies in the face. Chris Brown fits both of those bills, which is why I guess I wasn’t altogether surprised to learn that he was arrested yesterday morning for felony assault. This man is still on probation for using Rihanna as his personal punching bag, btw. It seems that Breezy was posing for a picture with two female fans (the most shocking part of this story, for me, is that Chris Brown still has fans, female or otherwise) outside of his tour bus in D.C. when two dudes tried to photobomb the scene. Chris Brown did not like this. Chris Brown became angry, and you wouldn’t like Chris Brown when he’s angry. Chris Brown expressed his displeasure like the reasonable fellow that he is by proceeding to repeatedly punch one of the men in the face. USE YOUR WORDS, CHRIS BROWN. Not stopping at mere brute violence, Brown allegedly added literal insult to injury, throwing in a homophobic slur for good measure, telling the photobomber that he’s not “into this gay s—.” Real cool, bro. Brown was arrested on the spot because, uh, when you’re on probation for punching a lady in the face it’s generally frowned upon to go around punching other people in the face. USE YOUR WORDS, CHRIS BROWN.

Julianne’s blackface has people in a Hough Oof. One good rule of thumb that I apply to my Halloween costumes, and to life in general, is this: Never go full blackface. Because, um, people tend to find that offensive. Black people find it offensive, white people find it offensive — most people find it offensive, unless they’re jerks. Julianne Hough did not get the blackface memo. Another good rule of thumb — HEADS UP, CHRIS BROWN — is to not go around making bad decisions when you’re a celebrity and know for a fact that, oh hey, there’s a guy with a camera right over there. Julianne Hough did not get that memo either. In a costume choice that was likely not meant to be inflammatory (she seems like a nice enough, if kind of vapid, chick) Hough dressed as the character Crazy Eyes from the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black.” Crazy Eyes is black. Julianne Hough is not. And when photos of Hough in an orange jump suit and a full-on painted blackface hit the Interwebz, people were not amused. (Also, remember when Prince Harry dressed up as Nazi for Halloween that one time? Seriously, I wish I were famous. I’d be so good at it, just going around
not punching people in the face and not wearing racist outfits, and also being very rich.) Lucky for Hough (who has since apologized via Twitter) she was not the most offensive Halloween reveler around this weekend. That prize goes to two a— holes from Quincy, Mass., who are now Internet famous for being the only two a—holes terrible enough to dress up as George Zimmerman and a postshooting Trayvon Martin (in full blackface) for Halloween. They then posted the pictures to the Internet. Because, HAHAHA, check out this funny picture of me and my buddy dressed up as a national tragedy, kehd! Ugh. Sort of makes you yearn for the good old days, when Chris Brown beating up Rihanna was the most offensive thing in the news.

After three weeks in first place, “Gravity” slipped to the No. 2 slot with $20.3 million. “Captain Phillips,” starring Tom Hanks in the real-life story of a ship hijacked by Somali pirates, finished in third place, collecting $11.8 million. The movie, written by novelist Cormac McCarthy, stars Fassbender as a Texas lawyer involved in a drug deal gone awry. Cameron Diaz and reallife spouses Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz also star. James Bond wrought untold copycats in the ’60s. Among the least shameless (and, fortunately, good) of this wave were the Harry Palmer films. Whereas “Dr. No” made Sean Connery a household name, these turned one Michael Caine from a rising star into a cemented fixture of the screen. Three Palmer films were made in the mid-’60s, then two more for TV in the ’90s. The second, 1966’s “Funeral in Berlin,” was even directed by a Bond director, Guy Hamilton, hot off that franchise’s high watermark, “Goldfinger.” The thing was, the novels the producers turned to — by Len Deighton — aren’t globe-trotting, sex-drenched, sometimes sadistic imperialist romps a la Ian Fleming’s 007 series. Even with a Bond director at the helm, “Berlin” is relatively calm and relatively mature. In this installment, Caine’s Palmer is sent to Germany to meet a Soviet colonel (Oskar Homolka) who’s threatening to defect to the West. This brings him in contact with numerous Cold War adversaries, including an un-

trustworthy German national (Paul Hubschmid) and a slinky Israeli agent (Eva Renzi). But there are no outlandish set pieces. Palmer’s travels only take him to London and both sides of the Berlin Wall. East Berlin, needless to say, is very far from sexy. The overall mood is one of weary pessimism. As in the other two
films — 1965’s “The Ipcress File” and 1967’s “Billion Dollar Brain” — Palmer is a cynical working-class type coerced into low-paying government work. He rocks black-rimmed glasses and, in Caine’s interpretation, a thick Cockney accent. He never smiles; in fact he wears a permanent expression of bored irritation. Both “Ipcress” and “Brain” are sillier, even surreal. “Brain” even marked the feature debut of Ken Russell, the incorrigibly purple filmmaker of “Women in Love,” “Tommy” and “Lisztomania.” His installment’s insanity — including a barkingmad performance from Ed Begley as a Texas oilman trying to use his riches to stomp communism — killed the franchise while it was young. Things never get too nuts in “Berlin” though, which isn’t a bad thing. It’s closer in spirit to something like “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold,” the grim 1966 film of John le Carre’s novel that served as an anti-Bond antidote at a time of carefree spy romps. In that sense, “Berlin” is a more accurate presentation of a time when mainstream cinema tried to act like the Cold War was over, when in actuality it was far from it.

‘Byzantium’ Vampires, as we’re constantly reminded, are way in these days. But for every “Twilight,” there are about 10 vampire items no one pays attention to. One that fell through the cracks was the latest from Neil Jordan, who two decades ago hit pay dirt with “Interview with the Vampire.” Going much more offbeat, “Byzantium” tells of a mother and daughter (Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan) who’ve survived centuries into the modern day. Gory beheadings sit with wit and a fine, spunky turn from Arterton, whose character opens a brothel to make ends meet.

Shooting the undead. Connors Farm delivers a different way of confronting your fears.
ZOMBIE SAFARI PAINTBALL
Bloody good fun is just a short drive away. / PROVIDED More fall fun
For the faint of heart Connors Farm also offers less sinister seasonal enjoyments, including a flashlight corn maze
that doesn’t include actors paid to scare you, but it may be even scarier if your phone/flashlight runs out of batteries. There are also hot cider doughnuts, a mechanical bull and a pumpkin
patch. These festivities take place all week, while the haunted aspects run Thursday through Saturday this week. For more info visit www.connors farmhauntedcornfield.com.
Over 70 Seasonal Craft Beers & Ciders
What’s in season at Connors Farm? Scares! And lots of them. But what sets this Danvers locale apart from many of New England’s Halloweenrelated happenings is that there’s actually an opportunity to not only face your fears, but to shoot at them and watch them crumble in front of you. For the first year, Connors Farm is offering Zombie Safari Paintball. It’s exactly what it sounds like, but since these three words aren’t often strung together in the English language, we’ll explain. You sit in the back of a tractor cart, stationed in front of a paintball gun, alongside 14 other zombie hunters. The tractor then takes you around the hallowed grounds of Connors Farm as actors dressed as zombies try to attack. That’s when you strike back, firing rounds of fluorescent paintballs at them. “We have a very high turn-
over rate for zombies,” laughs Bob Connors, who is the fifthgeneration owner of the farm. “People have no mercy. You get 15 people on a trailer and they just plaster the zombies, and the zombies just go to their knees; it’s beautiful!” Zombie Safari Paintball is a new addition to the farm’s scary arsenal. For the past six years, Connors has also offered a truly frightening Haunted Cornfield and Woods of Horror. Ticket holders walk through a maze with shifting themes — this reporter found the circus theme to be the scariest: With its sped-up and slowed-down carnival music and evil clowns, it’s like step right up … to be murdered! — and Connors says the 53 actors he has stationed throughout the course aren’t just about unexpectedly jumping out in front of you. “We’re trying to do psychological scares more than ‘boo’ scares,” he says. “We like to set the scenes with the right music, the right fog, the right lighting, the right strobes and the right smells.”

‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ This might be our favorite Tim Burton flick (other than “Edward Scissorhands”). Lupita Nyong’o is hitting the ground running when it comes to her film career, making a startling and attention-grabbing debut as the mysterious, wild-eyed Patsey in “12 Years a Slave,” a performance that’s already earning a ton of awards speculation for the Nigerian actress. There are worse ways to start off. When you get a shot at a role like this, in a film like this, with a director like this, what’s your first reaction? [Laughs] When I auditioned for this role, I was just about to graduate from Yale. It was the first time that I was allowed to audition for professional things, and “12 Years a Slave” was the first audition I put on tape. After

the audition it dawned on me — Brad Pitt is producing this film and Steve McQueen [is making it]. It was kind of like a slow realization of how major auditioning for this thing was. But it also felt completely improbable that I would get the role. How do you approach material as intense and visceral as this? It was about being present. Patsey in the script is described as being “effortlessly sensual.” In the book, Solomon says that Patsy “had an air of loftiness that neither labor nor lash could rid her of.” I was reading James Baldwin’s “The Fire Next Time,” and I found this thing he says about sensuality. He says, “To be sensual, I think, is to rejoice in the force of life itself and to be present in everything that one does, from the effort of loving to the breaking of bread.” And that was Patsey for me. That’s what made her so sensual,
living, experiencing, will reveal itself.

How much has your life changed? Well, it’s changed in one way. I get to wear really cool clothes. [Laughs] But I must say, I have such a good team of representatives, and they’ve been very good at preparing me for this at a reasonable pace. And I’m in such good company with the rest of the cast. I can learn from them how to do this part that I have no training for. They don’t teach you this side of things in drama school. the fact that she was present. Why do you think it took so many non-Americans to give such an honest look at such an unspeakably horrific part of American history? I don’t think it was by design. I don’t think Steve was like, “I don’t want any Americans!” But at the same time America is made of immigrants. The African-American slaves came from Africa, the white slave owners were Irish and German and English. So I don’t think that highlighting our non-American-ness does the story any sort of favors or injustice. For me, as an actor, I feel like it is my job to portray things that are outside of myself, to truthfully believe in circumstances that are not my own. Otherwise my career will be very short, playing some middle-class Kenyan. [Laughs]

COULD YOU HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER? I love “Homeland” and sometimes really identify with how the main character feels. Does that mean I could be bipolar?
In my opinion, Hollywood glamorizes or does a mediocre job at portraying mental illness, and is therefore a poor reference point for self-diagnosis. Even the Oscar-nominated “Silver Linings Playbook,” centered around the mercurial world of a person suffering from bipolar disorder, turned Bradley Cooper’s illness into a lovable personality quirk. It’s important to distinguish between normal ups and downs, and the debilitating highs and lows of bipolar disorder. Many mentally healthy people have mood swings. In a culture where happiness is considered a birthright, people are often quick to jump to the conclusion that something is wrong with them when they are not feeling 100 percent content at all times. Grief and sadness are normal responses to loss and disappointment. Excitement and inspiration are appropriate responses to pleasurable and creative activities. Formerly known as manic depression, bipolar disorder is a potentially debilitating chemical imbalance in the brain characterized by periods of extreme ups and downs, and risky behaviors. According to the National Institute of

Health, it affects approximately 5.7 million adult Americans, or about 2.6 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older every year. Frequently misdiagnosed, as many as 20 percent of people complaining of depression to their doctor actually have bipolar disorder. During the manic stage of the disorder, people experi-
ence what many describe as an intoxicating high and sense of euphoria. This high may give them the sense of invincibility that impairs their judgment, leading them to reckless behavior. They may also display pronounced agitation or irritation, inflated self-esteem, decreased need for sleep, hyperactivity, racing thoughts
and poor temper control. Some even experience psychotic episodes and extreme paranoia. A person suffering from mania may seem barely recognizable to their loved ones, altering the way they talk or dress. Some individuals experience a milder form of mania known as hypomania. A departure from their baseline mood,
Alcoholism
Men’s health. Alcohol and you: Is your ‘little habit’ something more? Those after-work drinks or gameday beers might not be as harmless as you think. According to Dr. Joji Suzuki, the medical director of Brigham & Women’s Hospital’s Addiction Psychiatry Service, many American men are “at risk” drinkers. Suzuki says there are three levels of drinkers: “those who don’t drink and are therefore not at risk; those who drink and are at risk; and those who have alcohol dependency and need treatment.” If you’re reading that and thinking, “Hey, I have a couple of beers on the weekend; what’s the big
deal?” don’t stress. “An at-risk drinker is categorized as any male under the age of 65 who drinks more than 14 drinks in one week and/or drinks more than four drinks in one session,” says Suzuki. Almost half of the male population — 40 percent — becomes an at-risk drinker at some point in their lives, “many during their college years,” Suzuki says. They may or may not become alcoholics, but at-risk drinkers pose plenty of danger on their own. “Hospitals are full of at-risk drinkers who have gotten into a car accident. Also, falling
they may suddenly appear unusually talkative, energetic, confident, assertive or creative, working on projects for days without sleep, or engaging in promiscuous behavior. Those with hypomania tend to function with less impairment in their lives, and are often mistaken for workaholics. Both manic and hypomanic types, however, experience bouts of depression where they feel deep sadness, hopelessness and feelings of worthlessness. They may sleep too much, or have trouble sleeping, eat too much or lose their appetite. They usually lose interest in socializing, sex or activities that once seemed pleasurable. Consequently, people with bipolar disorder are at an increased risk for suicide. If you suspect that you might have bipolar disorder, consult a psychiatrist. Though alcoholism presents itself in many ways, someone extremely dependent on alcohol may drink every day and suffer withdrawal symptoms if he stops suddenly. Liver cirrhosis or brain degeneration can also occur. But Dr. Suzuki says that education and awareness prevent most men from reaching that point.

MILLENNIALS BOUNCE BACK The economy has robbed millennials of the traditional career path that was once promised to us all through our education system. Millennials are starting their careers later in life due to the recession and have to work much harder than previous generations to recover. In a new study published by my company and PayScale.com, we found that baby boomers are more likely to have always lived on their own after starting their career (95 to 60 percent) than
Gen X (88.50 percent) or Gen Y (70 to 80 percent). In addition, the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce reports that millennial workers are now 30 years old before hitting a median wage of $42,000, which is up from 26 back in 1980. What this means is simply that millennials have to be accountable for their careers and be creative with their approach to job-searching. Here are my Top 5 tips for millennial jobseekers :

Peavy peeved about call Red Sox pitcher Jake Peavy, who started Game 3 of the World Series for Boston, ranted after the game Saturday regarding the Cardinals’ winning run. “I’m beat. I’m out of words,” Peavy told ESPN. “I don’t know what to say. I think it’s a crying shame a call like that is going to decide a World Series game. It’s a joke.”

Patriots plow past Dolphins NFL. The Patriots put together a strong second half in a win over Miami yesterday at Gillette Stadium. It was once again a tale of two halves for the New England Patriots yesterday. But unlike last week in New Jersey, the Pats saved their best for later in a 27-
17 win. Here are three things that stood out in the AFC East battle:
1
Give a quarter, take a quarter Third quarters have been terrible for the Patriots this season. Heading into yesterday’s game against the Dolphins, the Patriots had only scored a total of nine points in the third quarter, while giving up 44
points. That all changed for the better against Miami. After a missed Dolphins field goal, the Pats marched down the field to score their first touchdown of the game. New England scored 17 points total in the third — including its first two third quarter touchdowns of the season — and gave up zero points.
2
Really? More injuries!? It’s rare that a game
goes by without the injury bug biting the Patriots. The most significant injury yesterday was the loss of offensive lineman Sebastian Vollmer, who left the game with a serious leg injury in the second quarter. Vollmer had an air cast put on his leg after it was rolled up on during a run play, and if the scream he let out when it happened is any indication, there’s little reason to be optimistic.
3
Late to the party For reasons unknown, Stevan Ridley did not see a snap in the first quarter, as LeGarrette Blount and Brandon Bolden took the carries. Finally in the second quarter, Bill Belichick unleashed Ridley for the first time. Ridley was instrumental in the team’s second-half success, and finished the game with 79 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. JAMES TOSCANO
World Series all square after Sox grab Game 4 MLB. The Red Sox tied the World Series, 2-2, with a 4-2 victory last night in Game 4. After a brutal Game 3 loss in which it looked as though the 2013 magic was finally fading, the Red Sox proved last night in Game 4 that St. Louis should still fear the beard. Jonny Gomes’s towering, three-run home run that dropped into the visitor’s bullpen at Busch Stadium in the sixth inning was enough to lift Boston to a 4-2 victory last night. The World Series is now tied, 2-2. Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz scored on the Gomes homer, thanks to a single and walk, respectively. St. Louis manager Mike Matheny will be questioned for his decision to remove starter Lance Lynn in favor of Seth Maness, who immediately gave up the Gomes clout. Lynn, who needed just 34 pitches to get through the first three innings, was dominant early and finished having worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits. He struck out five on 89 total pitches. Clay Buchholz silenced some doubters, turning in a fine effort. The righty pitched four innings and did not allow an earned run on three hits. He struck out two and walked

three on 66 pitches. Felix Doubront was also tremendous for the Red Sox, pitching 2 2/3 innings while allowing just one earned run on one hit on short rest. John Lackey threw 17 pitches out of the Red Sox bullpen in the eighth without allowing a run, and Koji
Uehara closed things out in the ninth. The final out was recorded when Uehara picked off St. Louis pinch-runner Kolten Wong at first. Jon Lester will take the mound for the Red Sox tonight in Game 5 (8:07 p.m., FOX) and will once again be opposed by St. Louis starter
Adam Wainwright. Shane Victorino was not in the starting lineup for the Red Sox last night due to lower back tightness, an issue which has plagued him for months.

Lions 31, Cowboys 30 Detroit did the Eagles a favor by rallying late to beat the NFC East-leading Cowboys. Trailing by six with under a minute to play, Matt Stafford completed two long passes and then dove into the end zone from the 1-yard line with 12 seconds left after he faked spiking the ball to stop the clock. Chiefs 23, Browns 17 Andy Reid and the Chiefs are halfway to an undefeated regular season. Alex Smith threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns as Kansas City improved to 8-0. Jason Campbell threw for 293 yards in his first start for the Browns.

in a walk-over win by San Francisco. Colin Kaepernick threw for one touchdown and rushed for a pair of scores. The Niners ran all over Wembley Stadium, to the tune of 221 rushing yards. Frank Gore also had two running touchdowns.
Saints 35, Bills 17 Jimmy Graham and Kenny Stills starred for the Saints as they racked up 386 total yards. Stills and Graham, who was questionable to play, each caught two touchdown passes from Drew Brees.

Bengals 49, Jets 9 The good feelings from New York’s win over New England turned out to be short-lived.
The Bengals blitzed the Jets with two touchdowns in the first quarter and didn’t let up from there. Marvin Jones caught four touchdown passes from Andy Dalton. •
Broncos 45, Redskins 21 Robert Griffin III put a scare into Denver for a bit, but Peyton Manning bounced back to lead the Broncos to 38 unanswered points.
