De Blasio proceeds with his ‘progressive vision’ Transition. The city’s mayor-elect outlines what’s to come after a landslide victory Tuesday. Fresh off Tuesday’s victory, Mayor-Elect Bill de Blasio began defining his next steps on the road to City Hall Wednesday, naming transition leadership he said shares a “progressive vision” for New York. “Today is now the first day of an eight-week sprint preparing our new administration. That is officially 55 days, and we are hitting the ground running,” de Blasio said at a news conference. The two co-chairs of the transition team, Jennifer Jones Austin and Carl Weisbrod, are former appointees of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, respectively working for the Administration for Children’s Services and New York City Economic Development Corporation. “The combination of perspectives and talents they bring aligns very closely to the agenda we put forward in the campaign,” de Blasio said. They are also seasoned players in city government, indicating a possible preference de Blasio will show in staffing his administration. “Having worked in New York City as long as

De Blasio said that voters had spoken and that it will be his office’s obligation to create a safe city where “prosperity is shared and there’s oppor-

As for the next few days, de Blasio is headed to Puerto Rico today to attend a conference of Hispanic legislators. He will then take a brief vacation with his wife Chirlane McCray for “down time.” “We’ve heard about this thing, we don’t know what it looks like,” he joked.

Mayor-Elect de Blasio meets with Bloomberg Sit-down. The pair had a “productive” meeting at City Hall, he said. Hours after his landslide victory, Mayor-Elect Bill de Blasio met with the current hizzoner at City Hall Wednesday morning. “It was a cordial conversation, a very helpful conversation, very collegial,” de Blasio said after the hour-long sit-down with Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “He laid out some of the issues facing the city in the near-term that we needed to coordinate on,” the mayor-elect said. “He talked about some of the ways he had put together his transition process, which was very helpful.” De Blasio said the mayor and his staff offered their help and support.

Maid cafe offers more than coffee Latest trend. The cafe provides an experience where waitresses treat their customers as if they were serving their masters or mistresses. When you walk in, young women in pink and white frilly maid uniforms bow and say, “Welcome home, Master!” in Japanese. This phrase sets the tone at Maid Cafe NY on Centre Street in Chinatown. Maid Cafe NY is the first of its kind in New York. Maid cafes are popular in Japan, where they have been around since the early 2000s. Stop-and-frisk appeal a ‘total’ waste Energized by the landslide victory of their mayoral candidate in yesterday’s election, stop-and-frisk opponents came to City Hall on Wednesday to call on the outgoing mayor to drop his appeal. Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s law department is appealing federal Judge Shira Scheindlin’s ruling against the way the NYPD practices stop, question and frisk. But the mayorelect, Bill de Blasio, has vowed to drop the appeal.

Congressman Jerrold Nadler called pursuing the appeal a “total” waste of taxpayer money. “The appeal ... is going to be dropped in January,” Nadler said. “So why waste everybody’s time and money and energy in November and December?” The police unions have all put forth petitions to establish themselves as injured parties, which would allow them to continue to carry the appeal if the city drops it. Lead author of Obamacare critical of administration over the rollout Fix. The White House is working with the help of tech advisers to resolve the website problems. A senior Democratic senator who served as a lead author of President Barack Obama’s health care law criticized the administration on Wednesday for failing to alert lawmakers to problems that led to the program’s troubled rollout. Sen. Max Baucus, chairman of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, who worried openly in April that the rollout could become “a train wreck” said he has been disappointed to hear administration officials say they didn’t see problems with the federal health care website HealthCare.

Interest in Obamacare rises despite website Uninsured Americans are showing more interest in the coverage offered under President Barack Obama’s health care law despite technical problems that have hindered enrollment through a government website, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. The glitches have crippled HealthCare. gov, frustrating millions of would-be applicants since it opened for enrollment on Oct. 1. Texas voters think cost for stadium too astronomical An effort to save the once-majestic Astrodome stadium in Houston failed on Tuesday night when voters rejected a $217 million bond proposal to turn it into a convention center and complex. Chemistry Casanova Reinvents the Emerald San Fransisco CA…It is 1937. You never saw a genius more in love. She loved him back, but how could he surprise her and stun her without breaking the bank? He knew she loved that glittering green necklace in the jewelry store window. But he also knew that he could never afford a natural emerald on a chemist's salary. So he made his own. A few years later, he brought 100 carats along on his honeymoon in New York City. But when the couple visited a Fifth Avenue jeweler for a professional opinion, the manager called the cops. He assumed the gems were stolen because they looked too good to be true. His beautiful wife just smiled knowingly.

Own a piece of emerald history. We have spent the last few years refining this complex process and the results are stunning. The spectacular lab-created stone at the heart of our Scienza® Marquesa Created Emerald Pendant is a vivid ¾ carat marquise-cut green beauty cradled in gleaming .925 sterling silver and surrounded by the fire of our exclusive DiamondAura® rounds. Perfect from the start. Mined emeralds are born in chaos. As a result, they are littered with flaws, inclusions and cracks. Scienza emeralds are absolutely free of natural imperfections. Even the finest South American stones are treated and filled to keep them from splitting. But every Scienza emerald begins and ends in perfection. The process begins with the seed of a natural emerald. In strictly controlled conditions, using intense heat of over 1800 degrees celsius, that seed takes over seven months to grow into a larger rough emerald. Chemically, the scientific stones grown in a lab are identical to mined emerald. They are just as hard and an incredibly rich, intense green. Our expert appraiser has valued this pendant at $345 but since our chemist appreciates hard gems as well as hard earned cash, we are pricing this emerald pendant for the astoundingly low price of $39. That's 89% LESS!

A much greener emerald. Our Scienza Marquesa Created Emerald Pendant originates from the mind not the mines. The win-win result is an indulgent adornment that’s literally and figuratively green—flashing more color, clarity, and fire than mined emeralds but without the environmental damage associated with gem mining. Your satisfaction is guaranteed. Bring it home and see for yourself. If the brilliance of our Scienza Emerald fails to impress, simply send it back within 30 days for a full refund of your purchase price. Is Smith gettin’ jiggy with Robbie?

Will Smith reportedly had a steamy romp in a photo booth at a party with “Focus” co-star Margot Robbie, which may spell trouble for his allegedly shaky marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith, according to Star magazine. At the pre-Halloween bash in New Orleans, sources say Smith and Robbie slipped into the photo booth to pose for some snaps commemorating the night. “Once they pulled the curtain back to take the pictures, they let their inhibitions run wild, laughing, hugging

and nuzzling each other in the dark,” the source says. “He wasn’t acting like a married man.” They didn’t stick around to collect the photos and Smith’s assistant snapped them up once they were printed. “After they left the party, they were gone all night,” the source says. Jada and Will Smith haven’t appeared in public together since August. Is it bad that I’m OK with them breaking up? They made it 15 years — that is several lifetimes for a union in Hollywood. What more do we want from them?

God bless Tyson Beckford, who shows us that two can play at that game. The model took it all off at the Monster Headphones Launch Party in Sydney, Australia, on Wednesday. And was probably paid a pretty penny to do so.

Sometimes you read an interview with a cute, squeaky-clean, on-top-ofthe-world pop star who has not fallen prey to the trappings of the industry and you think, “Maybe this kid will do OK.” But sometimes you see a glimpse of a darker future. On an unrelated note, Ariana Grande sees demons sometimes. The up-and-coming pop star was in Kansas City for a show recently: “The next night we wanted to go to Stull Cemetery, which is known as one of the seven gates to hell on Earth,” she told Complex. “I felt this sick, overwhelming feeling of negativity over the whole car and we smelled sulfur, which is the sign of a demon, and there was a fly in the car randomly, which is another sign of a demon. ... I took a picture and there are three super distinct faces in the picture — they’re faces of textbook demons.”

Grande says that wasn’t her only demonic experience — she also saw a cloud of black matter next to her bed, and says it made her hear whispers when she tried to go to sleep. Get some rest, Ariana. Call your mom. Next time you see a demon, take a day off. You seem like a sweet girl. MELINDA TAUB

Since playing an unwittingly mischievous young girl in “Atonement,” the Irish actress Saoirse Ronan has steadily stayed in view. In addition to “The Lovely Bones” and “Hanna,” she’s had five films this year alone, including “The Host” and “How I Live Now,” the latter in which she plays a bratty teen visiting England just in time for war to break out. And incidentally, her name is pronounced “SEER-shuh.” Your character is very angry and sweary for an adaptation of a young adult book. I loved the idea that she would curse and that she was angry and kind of modern — just a very current, abrasive kind of girl, very cold to people and not very likable at
SAOIRSE RONAN The star of “How I Live Now” just wanted to play a typical, modern teen.
COMING OF AGE first. I hadn’t done that in a while. I had played a few characters that were ethereal and part of a supernatural world. When I finished “The Host,” I was like, “I need a script where I’m just playing a girl I would run into on the street.” How much did you fall back on Meg Rosoff’s source, especially considering adaptations often alter the source? That was actually the reason I didn’t read the
GETTY IMAGES
book. The characters were changed. All of our ages were slightly altered. Usually I don’t read the book. I’m hoping to play Mary, Queen of Scots next year, and for something like that I would do the opposite and read as much as I could. Your parents used to be pretty involved in the projects you picked. How
hands-on are they now? My parents weren’t my agents or anything like that. They weren’t my managers. They were my mom and dad. My mom would always come away with me when I was working, and my dad’s an actor as well. It was basically the case when I was sent the script, we’d all read it so we could talk about it. It was a bit more relaxed.
Getting old
Are you eager to get out of teenage roles? I think I’m getting there, yeah. I was lucky when I came into film. I never really played kiddie roles; I was always the child in an adult environment in adult films. It can be tricky when you’re a teenager to find a really good character to
play, but there are a few out there. When you enter your early 20s, there’s just an abundance of great characters to play.
That said, some actors play teens into their early 30s. They do, yeah. [Laughs] I don’t think I want to do
that though. I want to get to the stage where I’m playing an old biddy and I’m making a cup of tea, and that’s all I have to worry about. That’s the dream.

Thinking of lube as a pleasure-enhancer (and not a buzzkill) can be a self-fulďŹ lling prophecy. / GETTY IMAGES, ISTOCKPHOTO
Although it’s a sexual accoutrement, there’s just something about lube that’s pretty unsexy. So to break down our stigmas and get to the heart of our lube concerns, I sat down with sexologist and author Logan Leffkof, Ph.D., to get her advice on the slippery stuff. No one wants to be the one who busts out the

lube during a sexual encounter. Why do you think people are sketched out about it? In the past, lubes have been seen as a problemsolving tool instead of a pleasure enhancing one — but those days are long gone. Research from Indiana University shows that 82 percent of users believe lubricant enhances sexual pleasure. Should we just get over ourselves and try using lube already? Yes! Because sex feels great with lube. It helps makes sex smooth and makes the connection between partners feel even more intimate and comfortable. And it can speed up foreplay and the time to orgasm too. Nearly half of users agree lubricant makes it easier to have an orgasm. How can someone feel more suave using it? It should add to sex, not be a distraction. It’s all in the application. You don’t have to wave it around and make a big deal about it. Put some on your fingers and massage it in wherever you want to stimulate. What type of lube should people get?

The right lube depends upon what you’re looking to do — seriously. Different types of sex require different types of lubrication. Do you want it to add to sex by providing additional sensation? Then one that warms or tingles might be a good idea. Are
you planning on having a long marathon bout of sex where your lube is going to need to last? If so, you may want to try a siliconbased lubricant. Finally — and this is really important — don’t use oils or anything oil-based if you’re using a latex condom.

“[It’s] all the sex ed and none of the uncomfortable coach from your high school.” Carol Queen, Founding director of the Center for Sex and Culture
Sex ed. Learn more without revisiting analogies to birds and bees. The next time you have a burning question about, um, something burning down there, or perhaps a last-minute birth control conundrum, the University of Oregon’s Health Center has provided a high-tech solution. SexPositive, its new free app, first asks users to agree to “express and obtain explicit consent from everyone involved before engaging in a sexual act.” Then the app notifies users that it won’t share or use personal information — then it’s game time. Two spinning wheels appear with a fill-in-theblank and various body
parts and nouns. The wheel will stop on its own or a user can manually stop it based on two word combinations. Then, users can learn more by tapping “STI risks,” “Safer Sex Practices” and “Communication & Advice.” “This looks like so much fun, people will learn in spite of themselves,” says Carol Queen, University of Oregon alumna and founding director of the Center for Sex and Culture. Her San Francisco-based center provides education and resources to people across the sexual and gender spectrum. “[It’s] all the sex ed and none of the uncomfortable coach from your high school,” she quips. Squeamishness aside, the app provides additional resources. For instance, links are included for more information from the Centers for Disease Control.
Considering the university paid $24,000 to bring sex columnist Dan Savage to campus and educate students about health and sexuality, promotion of the new app is a priority. Savage has called it “an amazing, fun and completely addictive sex ed app.” Queen also points out its non-judgmental nature: “Sex-positivity is the idea that we don’t judge others for their sexual desires and activities as long as they’re consensual. That includes decisions not to have sex. In a perfect world, everyone would have the information and support they need for a healthy sex life, and of course that isn’t [true] now, but thinking sex-positively may help us get there.”

Trend spotting: Herb cocktails Try this
Shiso Gimlet Created by Camille Austin, Hakkasan (311 W. 43rd St., 212-776-1818) INGREDIENTS: 1 1/2 oz. NOLET’s Silver Dry Gin 3 shiso leaves 3/4 oz. Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao 1 oz. fresh lime juice 1/2 oz. lychee juice 1 bar spoon yuzu marmalade INSTRUCTIONS: Shake, strain into a martini glass and garnish with a shiso leaf.
Drinks. Ingredients are going from the garden to your glass. If you get out as much as we do, first of all no judgment and second: You may have noticed that fresh herbs are cropping up as ingredients and garnishes on cocktail menus throughout the city. What brings about this wave of greenery in our drinks, and how does it enhance spirit flavors? We spoke with mixologist Jen Gordon, who designs cocktails for Altamarea Group’s Ai Fiori (400 Fifth Ave., 212-6138660) in collaboration with director of bar operations Eben Freeman. Here’s what she has to tell us about this exciting trend. Why are herbs in drinks making an appearance on cocktail menus? Herbs are popping up in cocktails because, like in food, they add an element of freshness to drinks. They can be used in a variety of ways, from just shaking straight into a cocktail to infusing into syrups or the
pear and sage. The color of the drink is balancing between green, yellow and burnt orange from the cayenne pepper. It is meant to be reminiscent of autumn leaves. That point is driven a little further by the garnish of a small sage leaf. It sits on top of the rock so that it is right in your nose when you take a sip. It’s autumn in a glass.
Jen Gordon knows that you might not want a fruity drink. PROVIDED
spirits themselves. What kinds of drinks are best to support or balance an herb garnish? This feels like a cop-out of an answer, but herbs are so versatile that they can go in any direction. Savory, sweet, classic, innovative, etc. However, if the goal is to highlight the flavor of the herb, simple is usually best. If you get too complex, it is easy to lose sight of the main ingredient. What inspired the flavors in your cocktail (at right)? All aspects of the Green Vespa are meant to scream fall. The base flavors are
Are fresh herbs necessary, and are they unusual for a bar to have on hand? Fresh herbs are preferred, but it really depends on what flavor you want in the drink. Dried herbs are typically used when fresh aren’t available, but in drying them, they can take on new flavor profiles of their own. In some cases, those subtle differences can benefit a drink. That said, I tend to lean toward fresh. Serious cocktail bars and restaurants always seem to have fresh herbs available. I am fortunate to work in a restaurant with a very well-stocked kitchen, so fresh herbs are always available to us. Unfortunately, your average dive-bar isn’t going to be garnishing your gin and tonic with a basil floret — yet.

Is this something our readers can do at home? Absolutely! My favorite way to do it is through flavored simple syrups. Use 50/50 sugar to hot water, stirring until fully dissolved. While still hot, drop a bunch of whatever
herb you have on hand — my favorites are thyme or lemon verbena. Let it steep for a couple of hours and you’re ready.

A Winning Combination!
Hot chef. April Bloomfield is coming to a TV near you. April Bloomfield is one of only a handful of female chefs in the U.S. who has earned a coveted Michelin star, and she’s done it not once but twice: for The Spotted Pig and The Breslin. She also oversees two other NYC eateries, The John Dory Oyster Bar and Salvation Taco. As if these aren’t enough, this month she opened her first restaurant outside the city (Tosca, in San Francisco). The busy restaurateur is only getting busier: This Sunday begins Bloomfield’s eight-episode arc on “The Mind of a Chef,” a James Beard Awardwinning public television series following chefs as they cook, travel and share their inspirations. Why take on a TV show? I always wanted to do [TV] in a format that I really liked, and I’d been a fan of “Mind of a Chef” after watching their episodes with Dave Chang [of Momofuku]. I was pretty shocked when they said that they wanted me to be a part of it, but I immediately said yes. How did you find the time to juggle the show and your restaurants? I think chefs juggle a lot in general. I think that’s the nature of the job, whether they’re juggling a TV show or juggling stuff they’re cooking on the line. It is just one of those things that I fit within my day or a weekend. I had a great time doing it. What not-so-glamorous parts of your job will viewers get to see? There’s an episode called “Restaurateur,” so I’m sure there’s gonna be some ups and downs and emotional stuff there, especially with building out [Tosca]. I haven’t seen those episodes, so I don’t know what to expect, but I’m sure people will get a glimpse of me and what my passion is and why I do the things I do. How would you sum up that mission statement? I think that’s the whole point of the show: It’s a great platform to see different chefs and how they use their minds or how they think about

Career in bloom
Chef April Bloomfield will be featured in eight episodes of the award-winning PBS series “The Mind of a Chef,” starting this Sunday, Nov. 10, at 4 p.m. on WNET Channel 13. / ZERO POINT ZERO Passion
What do you hope viewers will take away from your episodes? I hope my passion comes through. I hope my enthusiasm for finding great produce; I suppose my sincerity. [Cookbook author] Marcella Hazan was an inspiration; I’d read her books many times and I got to film with her, which I’m gonna remember for the rest of my life, and I hope that the sincerity of that comes through on TV. The dish that she introduced me to is the most delicious that I had ever eaten. To be able to work with her and just be in her presence and learn from her was amazing. Deal

food. When [the production company] first asked me to do it, I was kind of taken aback that they chose me, because I was like, “Oh, I’m not Dave Chang or Sean Brock,” and I think that’s the whole point: Everybody’s different. Your places have always remained buzzworthy. How do you keep the quality consistent? It takes a lot of hard work running a restaurant and it takes even more hard work to run various restaurants. It’s just a matter of trying to inspire and keep progressing — and tasting is really important and checking for consistency, motivating people to make delicious food and to make sure everything is tip-top and shipshape. If you want consistency in your restaurants you have to be present. [But] it’s important to have other people in charge — I have some wonderful head chefs in each of my restaurants that have been working with me for many years, and they do a great job. If I didn’t have them then I couldn’t do what I do.

Botox is poison Re: ‘Someone give Zellweger her old face back’ (Metro, Nov. 5) Shame on you, Metro, for allowing Ms. Robinson to mock this woman’s damaged face. When will people wake up and realize that Botox is a poison? It is botulism toxin. It should be banned by the government. It is insane to have this injected in one’s face. Seriously. It was a roll of the dice just to bubble in “yes” or “no,” whatever was your pleasure. Then, we waited on line to watch the paper go into a machine and handed our card to a worker who had a hearing problem. Well, we want to thank the Board of Elections for another DISASTER. Chandler injury has Knicks now searching for answers NBA. The Knicks’ center will be out for over a month at the start of a rough season so far. For a Knicks team off to an ugly 1-3 start, the last thing they needed was an injury on top of it. But the team got the bad news it dreaded Wednesday morning when Tyson Chandler learned he has a hairline fracture in his right leg and will be out four to six weeks. The injury is nondisplaced and will not require surgery. It will, however, require major changes to the Knicks lineup. Chandler, the 2011-12 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, is the key to the team’s defense. He is also the

Runners back
Giants getting healthy at running back The Giants are still without the services of running back David Wilson, who has yet to be cleared to resume football activities, but they finally got some good news regarding their backfield. Andre Brown (leg) and Brandon Jacobs (hamstring) should both
be ready to return from injury. “We’ve got some big backs. It’s good to get some guys back healthy. Peyton [Hillis] is a guy that hasn’t been playing for the first six weeks of the year and he’s coming out getting 25 touches a game, so it’ll be good for him to get some relief. That bye came at the right time for him,” Eli Manning said. “And it’ll be good to have Brandon and

Things could be worse for Aaron Rodgers owners. Your girlfriend could have left you or maybe you are going home to discover a sewage leak in your kitchen. But yeah, there’s no sugarcoating it: Things are bad. Giving up, however, is for the weak. You can still win fantasy glory.
I have an 8-1 or 9-0 team, I’m doing everything I can to trade for this guy. Rodgers owners can reasonably ask for a package of something like Russell Wilson and Rueben Randle or Terrelle Pryor and Shane Vereen. It’s not ideal, but these are moves that could benefit both sides.
Stop-gap solutions. Option one is to hold Rodgers on the bench and wait for his broken collarbone to heal. Reports this week suggest the earliest he’ll be back is Week 13 and the latest will be Week 16. Piecing together quarterback production for your team will be far easier than what the real-life Packers are dealing with. You could go with Jake Locker against the Jags this week, Nick Foles vs. the Redskins in Week 11 and Jay Cutler against the Rams in Week 12. Before
Attack, attack. For those of us who don’t own Rodgers, this is why we’ve been grinding the wire all year. Many of us have two good quarterbacks, such as Matthew Stafford and Pryor or Andrew Luck and Ben Roethlisberger. It’s now time to use these assets to attack the Rodgers owner with trade offers. We can afford to get thinned out at quarterback — the most replaceable position — to obtain difference makers at wideout, running back and tight end.
Rodgers in a hoodie against Chicago was a nightmare for fantasy owners. / GETTY IMAGES
you know it, you might get Rodgers back. Use waivers and ride matchups. It’s more practical at QB than anywhere else. Trade market. Let’s say you can’t afford to hold out and wait on Rodgers. Fine. There should be a big trade market for a guy who should be back for the fantasy playoffs. If
