Report on stop-and-frisk shows low conviction rate High cost. The report by the NY attorney general said there was a low conviction rate for people arrested using the method. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman released a report on Thursday analyzing how effective the police practice of stop-and-frisk is, based on data from the NYPD and the office of Court Administration. The report looked at the number of stops that lead to arrests, and the number of arrests that lead to convictions. It looked at approximately 150,000 arrests out of 2.4 million stops between 2009 and 2012. According to the A.G.’s report, 3 percent of those arrests lead to convictions, and .01 percent to convic-

first time in three decades. The report also looked at harm incurred by arrestees, even for misdemeanors. People who are arrested, even if they are only charged with misdemeanors, face “collateral consequences,” regardless of the ultimate outcome of the
case. Their lives are affected in myriad ways, from loss of employment, housing or immigration status to becoming ineligible for student loans.

Staten Island Ferry riders got an unexpected jolt Thursday afternoon when the vessel they were riding slammed into a Manhattan ferry terminal. Officials confirmed the ferry had departed from Whitehall terminal and reached as far as Governor’s Island when the captain discovered some sort of mechanical issue. Officials were unsure
of the specifics of the issue. The captain turned around and headed back to Whitehall terminal, warning the passengers to brace for impact, police said. The ferry made a “hard landing” into the dock, causing damage to the dock, police said. The fire department said they received a call
at 3:10 p.m., though the caller said the ferry had bumped the dock some time earlier. Fire department personnel were still on scene about an hour later, though officials said no one had reported any injuries or requested medical attention, and nobody had fallen overboard. DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

More graduating high school students are college-ready More New York City students who are graduating high school are collegeready, according to what could be the last round of letter grades given to city schools. The Bloomberg administration announced the seventh annual progress reports, which award letter grades to schools based on students’ performance and attendance, as well as surveys of parents, students and teachers. Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio has said that he would abolish the letter-grading system, saying that it is not a strong indicator of how New York public schools are performing. LAURA SHIN

Parents of Allison Lao plead for traffic safety Tragic warning. The little girl was killed a month ago in Queens. In a heart-wrenching fourminute speech at a march, the parents of a little girl killed just one month ago pleaded with city drivers to exercise greater care. Allison Lao, 3, was killed by an SUV while crossing the street with her grandmother in Jackson Heights, Queens. At the Three Children Too Many march for traffic safety on Tuesday night, Allison’s mother, Amy Tam, and father, Hsi-Pei Liao, spoke of their loss and tried to appeal to drivers. The driver who hit Allison was turning left through a crosswalk. Police gave him two tickets: one for failing to yield

to a pedestrian and one for failing to exercise due care. The toddler, her weeping mother said, “paid the death penalty for crossing the street.” “It’s unbelievable that the driver’s penalty was two tickets,” her mother cried. Allison’s father made a desperate plea for drivers
to realize their “enormous responsibility.” “Please, before you get behind the wheel, realize that the machine that you’re about to operate can kill people,” he urged.

Traffic safety advocates have complained that media reports suggested the little girl darted into traffic. But that was untrue: The 3-year-old was in the crosswalk, with a green light, “hand-in-hand with grandma.” “Allie was behaving exactly the way you would want your own 3-year-old to while crossing the street,” her mother sobbed. “This driver,” she continued, “instead of yielding to a toddler and her grandma, made a conscious decision to muscle his way through the crosswalk.”

Typhoon aftermath. TOM US carrier unloads Philippine relief goods FOREMAN A U.S. aircraft carrier “strike group started unloading food and water to the typhoon-ravaged central Philippines on Thursday, as President Benigno Aquino faced mounting pressure to speed up the distribution of supplies. While relief efforts picked up, local authorities began burying the dead — an important, if grim, milestone for a city shredded by one of the world’s most powerful typhoons and the tsunami-like wall of seawater believed to have killed thousands. “There are still bodies
on the road, said Alfred Romualdez, mayor of Tacloban, a city of 220,000 people reduced to rubble in worst-hit Leyte province. “It’s scary. There is a request from a community to come and collect bodies. They say it’s five or 10. When we get there, it’s 40. Many petrol station owners whose businesses were spared have refused to reopen, leaving little fuel for trucks needed to move supplies and medical teams around the devastated areas nearly a week after Typhoon Haiyan struck. And it’s the Democrats in D.C. these days who are doing the cursing. All you have to do is mention Republicans and Obamacare in the same breath. again. For all their bluster, they’ve been unable to force any significant changes. And that is a problem for Democrats, because it means whatever is wrong with Obamacare belongs to their party alone, no matter how much they may grouse about the GOP. Oh sure, some Republican-ruled states have been less than cooperative, some insurers have heaved curveballs and the folks who designed the website ‌ well, you know. But whenever anyone warned about the possibility of such setbacks (even, I might add, when those
warnings came from politically neutral analysts) the White House and Democratic leaders pretty much dismissed the speakers as naysayers. If the Democrats had allowed the Republicans even a few minor tweaks to the program, they could have had a fighting chance of portraying this as a bipartisan problem. But they didn’t, so the Republicans can hoot with impunity from the sidelines while the Democrats alone try to wrestle this bear. To be sure, Obamacare may yet turn out to be a rousing success. But if it fails, that failure will land almost exclusively on Democrats no matter how hard they point a finger of blame at others. Democrats ignored probably the greatest lesson Bill Clinton ever taught: Be grateful for your opponents, because they — more than friends — will show you where your ideas are weak.

Study. Leaving the light on results in poor sleep quality Falling asleep in the glow of the TV or leaving a light on next to the bed can affect brain activity levels and lead to poor quality sleep, according to the authors of a new study. “Our study showed that even a low light interferes with good sleep by inducing more light sleep, less deep sleep and more frequent micro-arousals during sleep,” which is a new finding, Dr. SeungBong Hong said.
Hong, from the Samsung Medical Center of Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine in Seoul, South Korea, is the senior author of the report. The researchers had 10 healthy people sleep for two nights while machines assessed changes in their heart rate, breathing and brain/muscle activity. ‘Widowhood effect’ strongest during first three months Research. Family and friends can help a surviving spouse by being supportive and attentive. When a husband or wife dies, the surviving spouse faces a higher risk of dying over the next few months as well, according to a new report. Previous studies have looked at the so-called widowhood effect. But it wasn’t completely clear how long the effect lasts. “The widowhood question is interesting because it is ubiquitous. At some point or the other, one partner will die, leaving the other, and this will happen to everyone regardless of class, caste, socioeconomic status,” Dr. S. V. Subramanian told Reuters Health in

an email. He worked on the study at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. “It’s possible it’s a grief-related mechanism, or that providing care for
the sick spouse causes illness in the surviving spouse, or that, as one’s spouse gets sicker, the surviving spouse stops taking care of their own health,” Subramanian said.
For the new analysis, the researchers looked at data from the University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study, which surveys more than 26,000 Americans over age 50 every two years. Widows and widowers were more likely to die than people whose spouses were still living, on average. The effect was strongest during the first three months after a spouse’s death, when they had a 66 percent increased chance of dying. REUTERS

President Barack Obama bowed to political pressure from his fellow Democrats on Thursday and announced a plan to let insurers renew for one year the health plans for Americans whose policies would be otherwise canceled due to Obamacare. The administrative fix offered by Obama would allow insurers to offer certain health plans in 2014 that do not meet the minimum requirements of the health reform law, but require the companies to spell out how the policies are substandard and what alternatives are available. Before the law went into effect, Obama had repeatedly promised that Americans who liked their health insurance plans could keep them under the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare. The law included a

fix problems with his health care reform law with administrative changes and it should simply be scrapped. “The only way to fully protect the American people is to scrap this law once and for all,” Boehner told a news conference. REUTERS

Day 10: Temp enjoys cocktails with The Danimal
“A mysterious realm of exquisite objects”
It was after 5 p.m. and I was getting ready to call a cab when a flower delivery arrived — a jumbo tropical parade float that put my mind immediately to rum drinks.
—New York Times

The Danimal passed through as I was opening the envelope. “Who’s that for?” he asked. I opened it and we both read it at once: To most beautiful temp for glorious mcfunburry dinner. return from china very soonly.” I wasn’t sure how to play this. “Shannon, is there something I should know?” “Huh?” God, not the mating panda thing again. “No!” “That’s not what I meant.” “What did you mean?” “I saw you and Xu Junior yakking it up in the parking lot. Don’t think I believe the fortune cookie English thing for a minute.” “Oh.” “Yes, oh.” I tried casually to put on my jacket. Danimal said, “Come for drinks with me. It’s not a pickup. Yes, my wife’s in Florida getting her lips done, but you know that. I just don’t want to go home yet, not after today.” “Where’s Andy Kimura?” “We hate each other. I don’t care where he is. It’s one of the reasons we’re selling.” A mother lode of potential office gossip was too big to ignore. “OK, but I don’t go with married guys. Period.” “It’s not about that. Let’s go to that bar beside McFunbury’s. “The Executive Privi-

Danimal guzzled a double scotch and I got stupid on a rum punch. He got philosophical about cars, the way guys do. “Kevin’s Mustang depressed the crap out of me. I looked at it and all I thought of was how it’s too late to fix whatever bit of the economy is left after having shipped it all off to China. Think of Michigan: 10 million primates needing 2,500 calories a day sitting on a cold rock in the middle of the North American continent, with nothing to do all day. A recipe for disaster. Detroit forces us to ponder the meaning of being alive: We wake up, we do something, we go to sleep, we repeat it about 22,000 more times — and then we die.” I looked across the bar: Sarah and Kyle were coming in and they’d obviously just been … frisky with each other. Danimal was being maudlin: “I don’t care if you’re spying on TWK for the Chinese. I just want the old system back.” Dan and Sarah locked eyes. So did Kyle and I. “Sarah?” said Danimal. “This place is our place. You brought someone else here?” “What about you, Romeo?” Kyle looked at me: “Shannon?” “It’s not what you th—” I turned to Danimal, “Spying for the Chinese? Are you nuts?” Caramba, what a mess.

Live the dream. Why just watch a movie when you can star in one? Meet the companies ready to cast you in a “live experience.” You’re walking down a dark metallic corridor, the disorienting sounds of machinery, attack alarms and soldiers in lockstep blaring from the room ahead. A minute ago, you were some hipster after work, three beers in. But now you’re wearing a jumpsuit on what appears to be, as you turn the corner, a massive spaceship. You see marines in zero-G gear, a decontamination room and a massive recon vehicle 20 feet tall, surrounded by dry ice. It’s like something out of “Alien.” No, rather, this IS “Alien!” Or, more specifically, the “Alien” spinoff “Prometheus.” And you’re starring in it. Your living movie has just begun. The above describes an event last year thrown by Secret Cinema, a group run by Future Cinema, the British company that calls itself a “live cinema.” It’s part of a trend of immersive experiences around the world. The goal is participation, and Hollywood is listening: Anything that peels you away from Netflix — and gets you to pay more — tends to do that. “I see it as riding the edge of culture,” Future Cinema founder Fabien Riggall told Wired last year. He has since declined interview requests, for fear he’s revealed too much — Secret Cinema generates buzz by keeping the films themselves secret, hence the name.

What Future Cinema reportedly made on its “Shawshank Redemption” event
But we’ve been! After buying a ticket online ($60 and up), you’re sent mysterious instructions about where to go and what costume to wear, but nothing more. You roam the spaces, touching, drinking, playing games and interacting with actors, who might send you on missions (or devour you, if it’s “Prometheus”). Then you finally watch the movie. “Prometheus” earned the company $1.1 million and had the blessing of director Ridley Scott, who introduced the film (via video) and donated props. The company’s “Shawshank Redemption” experience reportedly raked in $2.7 million. Yeah, people paid to pretend to be in jail. Despite its cool cred, Future Cinema wasn’t the first to be so bold. That honor goes
to Punchdrunk, a British theater company around since 2000. Their current productions include “Sleep No More,” an interactive adaptation of “Macbeth,” which has played in Boston and New York, and “The Drowned Man” in London, in which you wander through several warehouse floors of a noirish Los Angeles — a living, breathing, sepia-toned “Grand Theft Auto,” where every fairground, movie studio and bedroom has been constructed to the finest detail, right down to old bottles in the medicine cabinets. “We want to almost place the audience in an atmosphere where they’re witnessing living films,” says Felix Barrett, Punchdrunk’s artistic director. “When we’re directing it we talk about wide shots and close-ups, and we encourage each of the performers to imagine that they’re heroes of their own movie.” The result is a chooseyour-own adventure: You could end
What’s next
Think globally Future Cinema is planning a worldwide expansion, having just attempted events in New York, London and Greece. And Barrett plans to take his fake world experience into the real one. Imagine this: “You book a holiday. You get a date, a locker and a key for the airport, and you open your locker and you find out where you’re flying to. You’re given one instruction — say, a cafe to go to — and then the show has begun and it’s a completely surreal world.”
up following the town drunk for an hour as he gets kicked out of the local diner; or watch the narrative, an adaptation of Georg Buchner’s “Woyzeck,” that trails from room to room; or end up at the bar, enjoying a burlesque performance and happily missing the “real show.” “We want to make theater dangerous again so that you’re out of your comfort zone,” Barrett says.

Pop-up spots
Dining darkly Dark Dining Projects bring the most exquisite foods to different New York locations, vision not included. Camaje (85 MacDougal St.) has featured Dark Dining since 2007, in which diners are blindfolded and given no details about the four-course menu. The goal is to rely on and stimulate other senses, aided by musicians and a professional tap dancer. You might not be able to see the dance moves but you’ll hear them around.
Pop-up parties have sprung up in places from NYC Laundromats to bridges to avoid complaints, crackdowns and predictability. Something different? 305 Fitness hosts bimonthly popup workout parties in lofts and nightclubs all around New York. While you still get the live DJ and heavy bass, the bartender here will be serving up smoothies.

Pingpong suddenly got cool — we promise. At SPiN New York (48 E. 23rd St., 212-9828802), trendy design, 17 courts, and a full bar and restaurant may have you suggesting table tennis this Friday night.
Nitehawk Cinema (136 Metropolitan Ave., Brooklyn) doesn’t offer dinner and a movie, it offers dinner for the movie. Alongside staple food items and drinks, the Nitehawk team creates dishes inspired by the films they play. Blue cheese fondue for “Blue is the Warmest Color?” Sounds great.
Movie + hot tub
Hot Tub Cinema isn’t stateside yet. It’s a big thing in East London, but if you go to the site www.hottubcinema. com and start petitioning, the trend could come to NYC. Other aquatic fun can be had locally at The Pool Deck at the Empire Hotel (44 W. 63 St.). It’s a 150-person rooftop bar with cabanas, mini fridges and flat screens. You need a room key, but for $10, anyone can get into the bar and pool at the Bar at Grace Hotel (125 W. 45th St.).

J.J. Abrams looks to the future with ‘Almost Human’ New show. “Lost” creator is back with a sci-fi/crime series. If you adored “Alias,” followed “Fringe” and couldn’t get enough of “Lost,” prepare for another season of addictive TV watching. Executive Producer J.J. Abrams is back with “Almost Human,” a futuristic drama created by J.H. Wyman. With his other actionpacked shows “Person of Interest” and “Revolution” also on the air, how does he balance all of his plots? “Well, one is in the future,” Abrams jokes. Actually, two are in the future if we count the post-
apocalyptic, post-blackout setting of “Revolution.” But we won’t get technical. “Almost Human” follows the crime-fighting duo of Detective John Kennex (Karl Urban) and his Android partner Dorian (Michael Ealy). Set in 2048, the show presents a world in which highly evolved, human-like androids are a reality in the L.A. Police Department. Kennex, who has just woken up from a 17-month-long coma, must cope with the loss of his partner and his leg from a deadly attack on the police department. He must also deal with his aversion to androids, made easier by Dorian’s unexpected emotional responses. For Wyman, it was the perfect time for a show
Jesus Christ – Lord or Figure-head? “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.’” Matthew 7:21 Figure-heads are common in business and governments – persons who seem to be in charge, but in reality have little or no power or influence. Others decide. Sadly that is true even in Christianity. Is Christ Lord (master) in your life? …In your church? He is our Lord only if we are in obedient submission to His will / word.

like this. “I think the network k model right now ow really promotes those kinds of ideas, something that is big and more popcorn-y, something that could be definitely an action-oriented program.” That relationship encompasses Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot, responsible for each of his shows. While Abrams cites the synergy and collaboration between those who repeatedly work with Bad Robot, he notes that each story brought to the table is completely its own. He has reason to get excited — critics are already praising the show and its characters. New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd compared Dorian to

Abrams credits his actors for the positive reception. “I do think that what Michael Ealy brings to this role is an incredible sense of thoughtfulness and compassion,” Abrams says. “He is playing a character who is, by design, literally as brave and as knowledgeable and strategic as you would want your partner to be if you were riding along as a cop. Technophobia “Almost Human” will consistently address reservations about new technology. “Kennex is a little bit worried about the advancement of technology and where that’s led humanity and what the world looks like with this onslaught of new developments and unchecked growth with technology,” Wyman says. “That’s the journey for him, is that he’s starting to realize it’s not the technology that’s bad; it’s how you use it.”

Bruce Dern and Will Forte attempt to bond in “Nebraska.” / PARAMOUNT PICTURES
A son-and-pop trip in God’s country Dramedy. A comic star and a film legend get stuck together while driving through “Nebraska.”
Review ‘Nebraska’ Director: Alexander Payne Stars: Will Forte, Bruce Dern Rating: R
In the new film “Nebraska,” a 40-something stereo salesman, David (Will Forte), goes on a road trip with his cranky old dad Woody (Bruce Dern) to collect what Woody thinks is a million-dollar prize. No such prize exists; Woody has simply received one of those Publishers Clearing House letters. Hoping only to bond, David agrees to placate this delusion. Here’s what doesn’t happen: David doesn’t realize Woody — ignored by his verbally pugilistic wife (June Squibb) and busy
••••• older son (Bob Odenkirk) — is a paragon of decency in a cruel and indifferent world. Woody is a stubborn, mostly miserable coot who rarely talks, because he honestly has very little to say. His de facto posture is slack-jawed, staring at nothing. At the same time his silence paired with his often irrational actions suggests there’s some crazy faulty wiring in his head.
Director Alexander Payne (“Sideways,” “The Descendants”) shoots in black-and-white, turning the Midwest into arid open spaces and buildings that resemble husks. If it looks alien and uninviting, it has a melancholic poetry to it, and not just because Payne overuses a too-plaintive score over montages of car travel. “Nebraska” is a funny movie that turns emotional, but it’s one that slips in moments of unexpected depth. A brief visit to one of Woody’s ex-girlfriends, still smarting from losing to the woman who became his wife, creates an entire universe we only get through implication. As with the characters it presents, “Nebraska” is deeper than it sometimes seems.

If ever there was a criticproof movie, it’s “12-1212,” the film version of last year’s mega-concert to raise money for Hurricane Sandy relief. Truly only a jerk would hurl negativity at a film whose entire box office is going directly to relief funds. But how about some mildly skeptical words? No film that opens with Bruce Springsteen and ends with Paul McCartney reuniting what he can of Nirvana is inessential. Whittling down the show’s six hours to less than two, it aims to

••••• recapture the power of the night. It doesn’t — but how could it? The concert was a had-to-be-there affair — not live at Madison Square Garden, per se, but
in front of a TV or staring at a live stream on your laptop while tweeting about Quentin Tarantino’s Kangol hat. Of course, “12-12-12” is still moving, and even joyful. On one hand, it features too much of the only marginally interesting setup and a stretch involving a server catastrophe. On the other, it may go down in history as the film where a rarely goofier Jesse Jackson giggles like a schoolgirl. As a movie, it’s slightly better than it had to be, and that’s good enough. Drama. An aging playboy won’t stop in ‘The Great Beauty’
Reunion film. “The Best Man Holiday” offers both heart and Terrence Howard going blue.
but even the intentional redundancies start to feel redundant. Still, this is a film meant to be savored, like a good wine or a chocolate. As he did in “Il Divo” and “This Must Be the Place” — in which Sean Penn was a bored rocker dolled up like Robert Smith — director Paolo Sorrentino depicts someone trapped in a prison of their own making. The beauty of Rome is endless. But the city is a tomb. MATT PRIGGE
Unfailingly chill and smirking, Jep (Toni Servillo), we’re told, once wrote a fantastic book. He’s been living off the acclaim for years, occasionally doing interviews but mostly lounging in his bachelor pad and staying out till dawn. He’s 65. That’s pretty much it for plot: Jep wandering through a life of desiccated decadence, one that’s no longer much fun but is, at least, not entirely boring. It plays like an in-spirit sequel to Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita,” in which a young journo got sucked into Rome’s jet set of the 1960s. A sequel to the 1999 sleeper hit, it’s a sleepy, shaggy hang-out movie, one too enamored with melodramatic cliches. But it is one that veers madly between genres — from R-rated penis jokes to shameless tear-jerking. The build-up to a wedding in the first movie is replaced with a Christmas gathering, with the original’s nine friends hunker-

ing down in the sprawling manse of Morris Chestnut’s Lance, now a New York Giants star. Each gets a subplot of varying significance. Will failing novelist Harper (Taye Diggs) get estranged former bestie Lance to allow him to write a book about him? And surely there’s nothing up with Lance’s wife Mia’s (Monica Calhoun) cough. This would be all wealth porn were it not for Terrence Howard’s Quentin. Howard cruises through the movie, trying not to get involved in the more serious bits and getting the best lines. Do Howard’s blue jokes fit in with a subplot that takes a turn for Kleenex-soiling tragedy? Perhaps not, but they’re
hugely welcome. “That was some melodramatic s—,” Howard cracks after one shouty development that takes things too seriously. “The Best Man Wedding” does have shocking reservoirs of intelligence, even nuance. Faith plays a big role, but there’s not one kind of faith. Where Lance prides himself on placing God before his family, Harper takes a more skeptical view without being punished for it. It accepts that age brings disappointments — and worse. That smarts can sit with stupidity and cliches is a good thing, not bad.

THE WORD
Matthew McConaughey’s career transformation over the past two years might have something to do with realizing his public image had gotten a bit ‌ fluffy. “I get it,â€? McConaughey tells GQ magazine. “Outdoors, shirtless on the beach, does a lot of rom-coms, girlfriends love him, good-looking. It’s like he rolls out of bed and shows up and makes it look easy.â€? But while he’s gotten more serious in the roles he chooses, some things never change. “Of course I still play the congas naked,â€? he says. “I just close the windows.â€?

Alec Baldwin’s stalker gets jail time which the “30 Rock actor denies (both the sex and cuddling). Baldwin allegedly said, “I make the best omelets in the world and I’d be happy to make you omelets every morning for the rest of your life. He also promised her a trip to meet Richard Gere. Hello, single-girl fairy tale! But then once he met his current wife, Hilaria, the fairy tale ended. And that’s when her stalking began, with frantic calls, emails and even uninvited appearances at his house. Sabourin says she just wanted to figure out what happened. “It’s not because he’s rich and famous that he can take advantage of women and throw them in the garbage, she said.

McConaughey still plays the congas naked
Dorothy Robinson takes on the world of gossip.
Alec Baldwin can sleep easier at night knowing his stalker is behind bars. On Thursday, a New York City judge found Canadian actress Genevieve Sabourin, 41, guilty of stalking, attempted aggravated harassment, harassment and attempted contempt of court. She was sentenced to six months in jail. The trial was dramatic, even by New York City standards. The two did seem to have some history: Baldwin admitted on the stand he had dinner with Sabourin three years ago at an Upper East Side restaurant but said it was to give her “career advice. She claims that afterwards, the two had sex and then “cuddled,

Re: ‘The buck stops with Congress’ (Metro, Nov. 14) Letter writer D’Ava Newman’s attempt to blame Obamacare on Congress is outrageous. Yes, legislation starts in Congress, and nothing gets through without both chambers’ approval. But it was passed when Democrats had total control, including a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. Republican proposals such as tort-reform and allowing purchases across state lines were dismissed. EVERY Republican voted against Obamacare. The Democrats created this mess, and the blame is entirely theirs.
Cancer | June 21-July 22. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion or take on a daunting challenge.
Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22. Keep your emotions under control. Overreacting will make matters worse. Listen attentively, but don’t make promises that you’ll regret. Face facts. BERNICE BEDE OSOL

Keep peace with Iran I voted for Obama in part because he said he preferred diplomacy to war. Now that talks with Iran are in process, we

Ross is no role model Re: ‘Rick Ross: Playing no games’ (Metro, Nov. 14) Metro, did you really let this one off the presses with Rick Ross being deemed a mastermind on the front page? The guy that advocates for our daughters to be raped and apologizes only after Reebok delivers him a financial hand slap? He states “I’d die over these Reeboks” right before he delivers his now infamous line, so of course he was quick to recant his statements. MICHAEL ROMANI, VIA EMAIL

Will bad Eli Manning show up again? / GETTY IMAGES
Giants vs. Packers: Three things to watch The Giants and Packers engage in a pivotal matchup for both squads, as Big Blue is looking to extend its three-game winning streak, while Green Bay looks to stay aoat in the NFC North race, sans their franchise quarterback. Metro looks at three things to watch for in Sunday’s game (4:25 p.m., FOX):
1
Feeling scared Eli Manning has thrown an NFL-high 16 interceptions, which has led to speculation Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has consciously pulled the reins back on their once-vaunted deep passing game. The Packers have the 24thranked secondary, so the chances should be there for the taking.
2
Who are you? Manning’s counterpart this week is third-string quarterback Scott Tolzien. Tolzien didn’t look as if the moment was too big for him last week, so the Giants shouldn’t take him lightly. But the defense is feeling good after allowing just one touchdown the last 14 quarters.
3
Run option As poised as Tolzien has looked, he’s also beneďŹ tted from great play from rookie running back Eddie Lacy. If the defense is prepared for the Packers’ “heavy packageâ€? of extra linemen it’ll help the Giants’ pass rush key on Tolzien. TONY WILLIAMS

The Jets have played like they are playoff contenders, but in signing safety Ed Reed on Thursday they signaled they believe rebuilding is over and they are ready to contend this season. “That was a huge factor for me, for playing this year in general. Being with a team that would contend, be in the playoffs. It’s right there, we’re focused on Buffalo right now, I know that for a fact, Reed said. “That’s what I’m coming in here to do with these guys and just concentrate and go week to week. I know what Rex’s ultimate goal is, I don’t have to harp on that. I know what you play this game for, I know what he’s coaching for. I’m just coming in to do my role. In Reed, the Jets’ revamped secondary gets an impact player if his aging body can keep pace. The team’s top three safeties from a year ago — LaRon Landry, Yeremiah Bell and Eric Smith — were not retained and in their place the backend has gone young. Reed can help the likes of thirdyear safety Jaiquawn Jarrett and second year players Antonio Allen and Josh Bush while provid-

ing some limited relief in passing situations. But injuries have derailed Reed this year, including a nagging hip injury that has limited him to just 18 percent of the Texans’ defensive snaps
this season. Yet, the fact that Reed excelled in the Ravens defense under Ryan and now plays in that similar set-up with the Jets could well help him acclimate with his new teammates.

“I think when you look at the numbers, Ed was always pretty good in that system. [He] finds ways to make plays. He doesn’t have to come out of the structure of the defense to make plays,â€? Ryan said. “He certainly knows how to make plays. He knows how to set up the quarterback better than anyone I’ve ever been around.â€? For the relatively young and inexperienced Bush, there is clearly an eagerness to learn from Reed. “That’s how I introduced myself. And not only that, it’s the

20th anniversary, you know what I mean? ... It’s very humbling that UFC picked someone like me to compete.” The reason the UFC selected Hendricks (15-1) picked to be half of the main event is simple: Hendricks has earned the title shot. “I am as good as he is,” Hendricks said. “That’s the way I’m looking at it.”
