SI turkeys to celebrate Thanksgiving upstate Giving thanks. A group of turkeys saved from certain death in Staten Island will have a feast at a sanctuary upstate. These guys will feast this Thanksgiving — instead of being the feast. A group of 28 Staten Island turkeys saved from slaughter in September will be treated to a “special fruit and vegetable” meal at an upstate animal sanctuary. “Raspberries, grapes, bananas and pumpkins — turkeys love pumpkin,” said Kathy Stevens, founder and director of Catskill Animal Sanctuary where the turkeys live. This summer, the U.S. Department of Agriculture

began rounding up and euthanizing turkeys on the grounds of a Staten Island psychiatric facility. Federal and state agencies partnered with animal rights activists and the birds were taken to the sanctuary, where Stevens said they are “right at home.” But some of their brethren aren’t as lucky, said David Karopkin, of GooseWatch NYC. More turkeys were rounded up in October, he said, and at least 50 still live in the same part of Staten Island. He and Stevens urged New Yorkers to consider vegan options. “At this time of year, that we consider having compassion for others, we should have compassion for the animals as well,” Stevens said.

US Supreme Court agrees to hear Obamacare contraception cases High-proďŹ le issue. Oral arguments will likely be scheduled for March, with a ruling due by June. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Tuesday to consider corporations’ religious objections to a provision of President Barack Obama’s health care law. It requires employers to provide health insurance that

covers birth control. The so-called “contraception mandate of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, requires employers to provide health insurance policies that include preventive services for women, such as access to contraception and sterilization. The health care law has faced political and legal hurdles since Obama made it a signature policy upon taking office in 2009. It

came under scrutiny again this month because of the many problems individuals experienced trying to sign up for insurance via new online exchanges. The two cases the court agreed to hear are not a direct challenge to the contraception mandate itself. The question, which has no bearing on the broader fate of the health care law, is whether closely held companies owned by individuals who object to the provision on religious grounds can be exempted

Supreme Court to review Bush protest case The Supreme Court agreed to decide whether two Secret Service agents can

Day 18: Temp empathizes with ducklings

I stayed for a while at Chantelle’s, but declined her vodka as I still had to drive to the oil refinery to meet with Kyle, who answered a meet-for-coffee text with: “blue gate, refinery north road, 7:45 look for billboard with photo of happy mallard duck family.”

DOUGLAS COUPLAND Douglas Coupland is a Canadian writer, artist and designer. His first novel was 1991’s “Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture.” His novella, “Temp,” of which this is the 11th installment, will be running online and in the pages of your daily Metro each weekday through Nov. 29.

9

Indeed I found the Duck Family portrait with the banner caption, “Always Putting the Environment First.” It stood in front of a crude oil-cracking facility straight out of a sci-fi film where mutants on a slave planet convert poor people into snacks for the master species. “Isn’t this place great?” asked Kyle, coming in from the parking lot and wearing his still brandnew journeyman’s outfit. “I start on the 8 o’clock night shift. I’m totally stoked.” “Kyle, this place is

freaky, and who knows what toxins there are in there.” “Shannon, for a guy with no degree this is a good foot in the door. And if I play my cards right, I can be a supervisor in a few years.” My heart felt like one of those little ducklings onto which a massive Acme cartoon anvil has fallen from a mile up. “Where’s Mr. Burns’ office?” “Admin’s about a mile thataway. Why are you so bummed out? I’ve got a real grown-up- job job. You should be happy for me.”

I was silent. “And look, I can maybe go work in Libya or Abu Dhabi and make crazy money. That’s where the action is. Six months in the Emirates — businessclass ticket each way — live in a walled compound with satellite TV and well-stocked fridges? The sky’s the limit.” I sighed. “You’re always looking for fun facts. Did you know that one barrel of oil — 42 gallons — yields 44 gallons of petroleum products?” “I didn’t.”

“My heart felt like one of those little ducklings onto which a massive Acme cartoon anvil has fallen from a mile up.” / STOCKBYTE

“It’s because when crude oil is converted, it increases in volume. Roughly half of each barrel of crude oil is turned into gasoline for transportation.” When did Kyle drink the “New Kyle” Kool-Aid? I never saw this coming. He asked, “Why did you want to see me, anyway? Trying to get me involved in your evil plot with the Chinese?” “As a matter of fact, yes.” “I don’t think I’m the espionage type.” “It’s not espionage.”

“Look, now’s not the time for this. I’m going to be late on my first day if I don’t get in right now.” He started edging backward toward the entryway. “Besides, this is where I’m at in my life right now. I’m an oil guy.” “Promise me you’ll call if you change your mind?” “Gotta go Shannon. Bye.” I waved goodbye and got back into Danimal’s BMW. I turned on the radio where “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas was playing and promptly began bawling.

Jolie will not be buying an island

Twitter feed Today, Justin Timberlake is expanding his audience, and Niall Horan is having troubling waking up.

10

Angelina Jolie surely plans to do something special for Brad Pitt’s 50th birthday next month, but that something special apparently doesn’t involve buying him an island. The New York Daily News had reported that Jolie laid out $20 million for an 11-acre, heart-shaped private island on New York’s Lake Mahopac, but the owners of the property, named Petra

Island, tell E! News that it’s still for sale. “We are open to show Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt the island, but they have to have lunch at my cafe first,” Donna Massaro, daughter of the island’s owners, says. The island would be of particular interest to Pitt since the two houses on it were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, one of his favorite architects.

I guess when a video of you getting slapped in the face goes viral, it rubs a little bit of the glitter off a showbiz career. Jack Gleeson, who plays the vile adolescent King Joffrey on “Game of Thrones,” says he will probably give up acting after “Game of Thrones” ends (or after Joffrey dies horribly, which, knowing “GoT,” could happen a lot sooner). “The lifestyle that comes with being an actor in a successful TV show isn’t something I gravitate toward,” the Irish Trinity College student (whose real accent is adorable, BTW) said on Dublin’s “Saturday Night Show.” “It was a recreation beforehand, and when I started doing ‘Game of Thrones’ there was, I wouldn’t say pressure, but perhaps the reality became too real for me.” What reality? Tumblrs and Tumblrs of hatred dedicated to your own sullen face? Maybe Jack,

who seems like a sweet guy in real life, admits that even he gets creeped out by Joffrey. “You tend to abstract yourself from the creepiness of it when you’re playing it, but when you see it on television it sends shivers down my spine,” Gleeson says. “I would like to try and defend him, but I would have a pretty hard job doing it. ... In terms of redeemable qualities, there wouldn’t be many.”

Folk festivals are a far cry from the dank clubs of London’s hardcore scene, but it’s an evolution that actually came fairly naturally to Frank Turner. Once a fixture on the punk and hardcore circuit with his band Million Dead, Turner is now better known as a folk artist. And, as unlikely a leap as it may seem, there’s still an undeniably punk spirit in Turner’s sound. “If I wanted to completely ditch punk rock I’m not sure I could,” he says, when asked if he still identifies with those roots. “The way I learned how to play the guitar, and sing, was kind of all in noisy, screaming, punk bands, and that comes across in what I do. I don’t want to reject my past or disown anything

in particular. I love punk rock records, and the ethos and ethics part of it is sort of how I go about my business.” It wasn’t a completely effortless transition. “I certainly felt like I had an awful lot of learning to do when I first started playing acoustically and solo,” he says. “Even at the most basic level, if it’s just you on the stage, with one guitar, if you screw up then it’s your problem. You can’t blame it on the drummer or have a screaming war at Noise Fest to cover up your screw-up. It’s very naked. But that’s kind of why I like it so much, is that it feels almost ‘punk,’ in a way. It’s totally raw and unguarded, and there are no excuses.” Turner’s music is marked by bare, poetic lyricism. In songs like “Recovery” (off 2013’s “Tape Deck Heart”) he describes the redemptive journey up from rock bottom that anyone who’s known addiction can relate to. It’s a frankness that he says is

integral to his relationship with music. That honesty is the hallmark of his songwriting, through which explores his own experiences ranging from the aforementioned struggle with substance abuse to the death of a close friend and the inexorable pull of home. Still, he knows that, for some, it’s not cool to be that unabashedly sincere. He doesn’t give a damn. “One of the things that my music has never been in the U.K. ... is cool,” he laughs. “I don’t want to be in VICE magazine. It’s just not my scene. I was a weird, awkward teenager. I don’t want to play in a band now that I wouldn’t have known about back then.” “It’s that kind of hipster, ironic detachment, it does my head in,” he continues. “There have been times where I’ve been criticized ... for being unironic. It seems like a bizarre criticism to me, for someone to say, ‘man, that guy really means what he says.’”

MUSIC M Inked

On fan tattoos “I’ve gone through a number of different emotions with that. When it first came along, I was a bit weirded out. Then I thought about it and, the thing is, you know, I’ve got plenty of band tattoos and lyric tattoos myself and I understand that motivation. But I guess I just don’t automatically group myself in my head with the kind of bands that I think of in that way. I have a Black Flag tattoo, I don’t think of myself in the same category as Black Flag. The portrait tattoos make me feel a little strange. I am not entirely sure how to respond when someone sort of cheerfully comes up to you and shows you picture of my face on their leg. What do I say, ‘Thanks, I mean, cool?’”

Upcoming. There are still plenty more Oscar contenders that have yet to hit theaters. It’s late November and we’re only up to our kneecaps in Oscar season. While “12 Years a Slave,” “Gravity,” “Dallas Buyers Club” and (yeesh) “Prisoners” have already captured audiences’ more serious side, the next month has a bounty of Oscar bait coming our way — as well as proudly dumber fare.

‘Out of the Furnace’ (limited: Dec. 4; everywhere: Dec. 6) Prestige level: You would think a grimy drama pairing Christian Bale with “Crazy Heart” director Scott Cooper would be rank to the rafters. But the gutter noir plot, involving murder and revenge, is not what brightens Academy members’ days. Actual quality: Gutter noir is preferable to Oscar cheese, and as far as “gritty” lower class romps go, the science here is tighter than in “The Place Beyond the Pines.”

O. Russell has improbably reformed into an Academy favorite. He rounds up some of his former stars to go “Boogie Nights” on this tale of the feds trying to bust up Jersey ‘hoods. Actual quality: Russell has a chaotic style that made “The Fighter” and “Silver Linings Playbook” atypically manic and abrasive Oscar bait.

‘Saving Mr. Banks’ (Dec. 13) Prestige level: Disney tells the story of one of its greatest successes, “Mary Poppins,” with Emma Thompson as its strident creator, P.L. Travers, and Tom Hanks as Uncle Walt.

Actual quality: Travers hated, hated, hated the movie. But that’s not a nice story, so Disney does what it did to classic fairy tales: sanitizes it, making Travers a grump who gradually comes around to the cultural overlords making mincemeat of her work. The magic of Disney!

‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ (Dec. 25) Prestige level: Word is this rollicking look at hedonistic stockbrokers (Leonard DiCaprio, etc.) is “Goodfellas” but with even more evil characters. Actual quality: Many are complaining about the 165-minute length (as

Check it out

‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ (limited: Dec. 6, everywhere: Dec. 20) Prestige level: They’re incorrigible eccentrics who follow their insane muse, but the Coens are beloved by the Oscars, and voters will likely go gaga over their look at the 1960s Greenwich

Village folk scene, specifically an uncompromising, unpleasant musician (Oscar Isaac). Oscar potential: This is the Coens in bleak/sadistic mode, which is to say the film is a mordant hoot to those with a dark sense of humor.

‘American Hustle’ (limited: Dec. 13; everywhere: Dec. 18) Oscar potential: The once controversial David

Oscar Isaac and Justin Timberlake star in “Inside Llewyn Davis.” / ALISON ROSA

dragons and fewer sickly hedgehogs.

‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ (Dec. 13): Peter Jackson’s supersized take on J.R.R. Tolkien’s initial, more child-geared trip to Middle Earth hits its second installment, promising more Benedict Cumberbatch-voiced

‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues’ (Dec. 20): Though everyone quotes it too much, Will Ferrell’s first stint as mustachioed ego monster Ron Burgundy is rather hilarious. And let’s not forget Ferrell is at his best when collaborat-

ing with director Adam McKay (“Step Brothers,” “The Other Guys”). ‘47 Ronin’ (Dec. 25): Japan got Tom Cruise in “The Last Samurai;” now its esteemed “national legend” — a much-filmed tale of revenge — gets headlined by Keanu Reeves.

Meryl Streep is back (with an accent and a drug problem, no less) in “August: Osage County.” / CLAIRE FOLGER

though lots of Scorsese in revved-up mode were a bad thing).

‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ (Dec. 25) Prestige level: Remember that old James Thurber story about a wallflower with an overactive imagination but no willpower to change his life? No more! Now Mitty (Ben Stiller, who also

directed) is a shy guy who suddenly finds himself doing crazy stuff, brave stuff. Actual quality: If you can overlook how this completely nixes the entire point of the Thurber story, then have at it!

‘August: Osage County’ (Dec. 25) Prestige level: This is a dysfunctional family

reunion film with Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts and Chris Cooper and Margo Martindale and Benedict Cumberbatch and Abigail Breslin and even Juliette Lewis. And it’s based on a Pulitzerfeted play by Tracy Letts. Actual quality: Is it a good idea to give Streep both an accent and a drug problem?

‘Oldboy’ anew. The filmmaker makes a valiant, crazy attempt to make a cult fave his own. Spike Lee doesn’t reinvent “Oldboy,” the 2003 South Korean vengeance film that’s only been remade in Hollywood because Americans don’t like subtitles. It’s a tale heavily reliant on plot, even more so in this Review ‘Oldboy’

streamlined version that’s 20 minutes shorter. But it’s still a Spike Lee film. The script sticks, if you will, to the script. Josh Brolin plays Joe Doucett, an alkie no-goodnik who, in 1993, wakes from a bender in a hotel room with fake windows and no way out. He spends the next 20 years there. Upon his abrupt release, he goes on the hunt to find out who imprisoned him and why. Soon Joe’s aided by a nice, young recovering addict (Elizabeth Olsen) who’s used to helping the needy. The first “Oldboy” isn’t exactly a masterpiece, and this one cleans up some of the busy plotting. But it’s really Lee’s approach that gives it a reason for being. Lee can’t top the original’s legendary hammer fight. But he recklessly mixes tones, as he’s wont to do. Brolin broods and Olsen is serious. But everything else is a cartoon — a gory, bloody, often messed-up cartoon.

Josh Brolin does his best impersonation of “Oldboy” star Choi Min-sik in the remake. / HILARY BRONWYN GAYLE

His “Oldboy” is still problematic and questionable. The montage depicting Joe’s lengthy imprisonment is some of Lee’s finest work, but the rest of the film gives him too few occasions to show off. But only Lee would, in his least political film, throw

in a 9/11 reference. It’s an unearned moment, but it makes you feel like anything could happen, even if you know exactly what’s going to happen.

Action. Statham faces off against Franco in Stallone’s ‘Homefront’ Sylvester Stallone wrote “Homefront” in 2008, but he might as well have written it in 1988 — or even 1978 or 1968. It’s a drive-in programmer: slight but lean and deceptively smarter, in spots, than it lets on. Sly allegedly got too busy to make it or star in it himself. He’s actually just too old and too conspicuously bulky to play Phil Broker, an ex-DEA agent trying to disappear into small-town American life. Instead he’s played by lean and British Statham. Phil’s daughter is involved in an altercation at school that pisses off the wrong people, namely a junkie mom (Kate Bosworth!), whose meth king brother has the delightful name Gator Bodine (James Franco). Phil is slow to apologize, and soon Gator finds himself with information that could put his life in jeopardy. Of course, this is all leading to Statham beating the piss out of Franco. It’s not a fair

fight, obviously, but that’s one thing that makes this more interesting than even it perhaps realizes. The bad guy is in way over his head. Franco oozes don’t-care attitude; he mumbles his lines. But the approach works: He thinks he’s too cool for a Jason Statham action movie, and he’s rewarded with a beautiful (albeit too choppy) smackdown. MATT PRIGGE

Easy-to-hang wallpaper Renters, you’re no longer bound to the generic white linen walls that came with your apartment. Graham & Brown’s latest Element collection from Superfresco Easy consists of six sweet nature-inspired designs that go on so easily, they claim even a kid can do it. So that means you and three friends should have no problem covering a room, right? Unlike traditional wallpaper that requires glue, this easyto-hang option is put up dry; you simply add paste to the wall. But the best part: It’s completely strippable and comes off in one piece — leaving your wall, and security deposit, intact. TINA CHADHA

New York City zip code 10013 — which includes posh neighborhoods such as TriBeCa and SoHo — saw 45 sales of $5 million or more in the year ending June 30, making it the second-priciest zip code in the country. Six of those sales were for $10 million or more, according to new data from Trulia. Beverly Hills, which has the iconic 90210 zip code, took the top spot, with 80 sales of $5 million or more. But 10013 was the only New York City zip code that made the Top 10 list, according to CNNMoney. Indeed, Florida and California, with swanky neighborhoods such as Newport Coast (92657) and Miami Beach (33139) dominated the Top 10. Home-rental crackdown heats up

Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda (sound familiar?) Don’t be that person that waited too long for the right time to buy a new home and missed the opportunity.

Should New Yorkers be allowed to rent out their apartments? / PROVIDED

Residential. Officials ramp up enforcement, but apartment-share websites fight back. It’s no secret that thousands of New Yorkers use websites like Airbnb, OneFineStay and VRBO to rent out their homes to tourists for short-term stays. But in doing so, they are violating a 2010 state law that makes it illegal to rent out an apartment for less than 30 days when the owner is not home. And lately the state has stepped up its efforts to crack down on “illegal hotels.” Last month, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman subpoenaed data on about 15,000 New Yorkers who rent out their apartments through Airbnb. But Airbnb is not turning over the names without a fight. It countered by attempting to block the subpoena in New York State Supreme Court and launching a petition requesting the legalization of short-term rentals. It has garnered almost 45,000 signatures. Detox after T-Day with these juices

1 3 2 Here are some new options to get your started. MEREDITH ENGEL

Juice Press’s Pumpkin Spice

Aloha’s The Daily Good

Juice Press’s Pumpkin Spice contains 550 percent (!) of your daily dose of vitamin A, thanks to the carrot juice it touts as its primary ingredient. Still, you won’t feel like Bugs Bunny when sipping this — it’s like a creamy, cold Pumpkin Spice Latte. The juice is cold-pressed, meaning that it contains way more nutrients than a pasteurized version, which kills enzymes (but provides a longer shelflife). $7, www. juicepress.com

Aloha’s The Daily Good isn’t a drink — it’s a whole-food powder that you stir into water or another beverage of your choice. That powder packs a powerful punch, with wild blueberries, coconut water, wheatgrass juice, spinach, three types of mushrooms and a slew of other healthy ingredients. The patented process purees then dries the ingredients, so the ďŹ ber and other nutrients aren’t lost in the shue. The powder is pretty tasteless, so it blends seamlessly into your drink. $75 for a 30-day supply, www.aloha.com

Daily Greens

The raw, cold-pressed juice from Daily Greens is already a big hit in the Southwest, and now makes its debut at Whole Foods. Founder Shauna Martin is a breast cancer survivor who created the line after personally experiencing juicing’s restorative eorts. Each of her juices contains nine servings of fruits and veggies (6 pounds of ’em!), plus ďŹ ber. We also love the lower sugar and calorie counts. $7.99, Whole Foods

World AIDS Day: What we’ve done, where we’re going Commemorate. Improvements are being made, but we still need to stop the spread. Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day, the 25th anniversary since the first commemoration in 1988. There is still no vaccine and no cure, and more people in the U.S. are infected with HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS, than ever before, says Dr. Celine R. Gounder, a post-doctoral fellow in infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins University who has worked in HIV research. This is both good news and bad news. “[It’s] partly because more people are now living with HIV, but it’s also because it continues to spread, says Grounder, who is also an HIV/primary care provider at Spencer Cox Center for Health in Manhattan and serves on the HIV ward at NYC’s Roosevelt Hospital. The good news: “We are learning so much that a cure may be possible down the road.

Rapid oral tests are quick and painless. You can ďŹ nd a free and conďŹ dential testing site at hivtest.cdc.gov. / WAVEBREAK MEDIA

We know that stopping the spread of HIV is paramount, but it can’t be stressed enough. Transmission happens through infected bodily fluids, most commonly via sex without a condom or by sharing infected intravenous drug equipment; rarely, contaminated blood transfusions have also been cited. Prevention is the first line of defense, and preexposure prophylaxis — a daily pill used in addition to condoms — is a new op-

tion for high-risk groups. Improvements in the treatment of those infected include new, less toxic medications taken only once a day. But this method can lead to complacency, which remains the biggest enemy in stemming HIV infection. Though knowing your status is vital, “most people don’t get tested, says Gounder.

Happy Thanksgivukkah! Eat. Commemorate the double-duty holiday with these festive feasts. Check it out

Surely the word “Thanksgivukkah” has entered your holiday lexicon this year, but in the rare case it hasn’t, here’s a primer: This Thanksgiving Day coincides with the first night of Hanukkah — for the first time since 1888. Celebrating both holidays this year? Better book a table at one of these restaurants — the next Thanksgivukkah won’t take place for another 77,798 years.

Save room for apple pie and soufganiyot (Jewish jelly donuts).

Jack’s Wife Freda 224 Lafayette St., 212-510-8550, $26 per person Potato latkes with cranberry marmalade are on the menu all week, and on Thanksgivukkah, there will be turkey with pita bread stuffing. Traditional sides like butternut squash and Brussels sprouts round out the menu.

Zucker Bakery 433 E. Ninth St., 646-559-8425 Zucker’s Thanksgivukkah doughnuts ($3.50-$5) sounded so odd, we had to try them. Our staff’s impressions were pretty good: One reporter “liked the thyme flavor, and the turkey was really moist and tasty” in her spiced pumpkin doughnut with turkey and gravy filling. A turkey with cranberry sauce stuffing earned a good review from one of our designers, who said it could work as “a day-afterThanksgiving breakfast sandwich.” Another staffer said the doughnuts — which also include sweet fillings like marshmallow — “could be a great treat to bring to a dinner party as a starter.”

serve butternut squash curry with Katz’s pastrami dumplings, alongside other festive dishes. Pretend you made the entire thing yourself with Fatty ’Cue’s Thanksgivukkah to-go menu.

Barbounia 250 Park Ave. S., 212-995-0242 Israeli-American executive chef Amitzur Mor embodies the rare holiday, don’t you think? He’ll be serving sweet potato latkes with labneh and dill, crispy sweetbreads with cauliflower and baby Brussels sprouts, plus turkey shawarma with challah stuffing, all a la carte.

Taquitoria 168 Ludlow St., 212-780-0121 The fast-casual taquito joint is getting in on the spirit a day early: On Wednesday, you can order deep-fried turkey and Brussels sprout taquitos with cranberry sauce and gravy, and latke taquitos with apple sauce and sour cream. Three will set you back $5, five go for $8.

Sons of Essex 133 Essex St., 212-674-7100, $68 per person You can indulge in three courses, opting for the classic turkey as your main or the seasonal Manischewitz-braised short ribs.

Parties don’t A bunch disagree on of Bull civil rights Re: ‘A reversal of roles’ Re: ‘A reversal of roles’ (Metro, Nov. 25) The Republican party was formed specifically to oppose slavery and promote civil rights; its first successful presidential candidate was Abraham Lincoln. This tradition of supporting civil rights continued into the present era with Republican President Eisenhower sending the 101st Airborne Division to enforce desegregation in a Little Rock, Ark., public school on Sept. 24, 1957. In recent years, they have differed on related issues such as affirmative action and the size of the welfare state, but not on fundamental civil rights.

(Metro, Nov. 25) In his letter, Dean Vigliano correctly admonishes a previous letter writer for attributing to Southern Republicans the blocking of civil rights, rather than the true obstructionists. However, Vigliano then references the notorious Bull Connor as having been the police chief of Birmingham, Ala. “Get the facts straight,” says Vigliano. But Connor was the commissioner of public safety, whereas Jamie Moore was police commissioner. RITCHIE TIEMANN, VIA EMAIL

NFL. The injured QB said he hopes to be back with the team next season when he’s healthy. Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is hoping this won’t be his last rodeo in New York. Thankfully for him, the team he’s served faithfully the past four years hasn’t found a suitable replacement for him yet. Sanchez spoke to the media for the first time

on Tuesday at a charity event in Morristown, N.J., following season-ending shoulder surgery in early October. Despite rumors the Jets might buy out the remainder of his long-term contract after this season, Sanchez definitively said he wants to return to the team next year. “I know I’ve heard a lot of stuff on the outside about me not being here and that stuff like that, Sanchez said. “I don’t know if that’s necessarily the case in the building. Bye week drama in Seattle, as cornerbacks Brandon Browner and Walter Thurmound are both facing seasonending suspensions due to PEDs. Thurmound should be back for the playos, but Browner could be done for the year. Huge loss there, but the Seahawks are on a mission. We still like them, just take the over.

No. 8

Saints (9-2)

Patriots (8-3)

Colts (7-4)

Is New Orleans developing a legit run game? Pierre Thomas and Mark Ingram are ďŹ nding holes. Monday night’s game against Seattle is the Game of the Year.

Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski are emerging for the Pats, just like Deion Branch and Troy Brown back in the day. They are still the plug and play, Pats.

We’re anxious to see if Indianapolis got bested by a former head coach that knew them very well, or if this lack of a run game is too much to overcome.

No. 3

Seahawks (10-1)

Panthers (8-3)

49ers (7-4)

Bengals (7-4)

OK, start giving Cam Newton some MVP votes. The men in teal are never out of a game when No. 1 puts the cape on, and he’s been doing it a lot lately.

Aldon Smith is back — two sacks vs. Washington — and the 49ers’ defense makes them a perennial contender, even when Colin Kaepernick is struggling.

New Orleans-Seattle is this week’s main event, but Cincinnati-San Diego is a very nice undercard. Both teams can make some noise when they want to.

Broncos (9-2)

Chiefs (9-2)

Cardinals (7-4)

Just when you thought you could trust Peyton Manning, he ran into Bill Belichick. His teammates made mistakes, but great ones ďŹ nd ways to win.

Andy Reid better head back to the BBQ pit and ďŹ nd some answers — especially if Justin Houston and Tamba Hali miss an extended period of time.

Carson Palmer appears to have found the Fountain of Youth and Arizona keeps rising up the charts, like a Lady Gaga club banger.
