Go big. The mayor said he hopes that U.S. leaders will work for “shared prosperity” across the country. Mayor Bill de Blasio addressed other city leaders Thursday, asking them to take on a nationwide “inequality crisis.” “There is a long tradition of mayors being ahead of the curve and working for the notion of shared prosperity and working for the notion of people rising together, even when it wasn’t in vogue in the national debate,” de Blasio said at a U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting in Washington, D.C. The mayor said that the nation’s capital was “gripped in a frustrating paralysis,” leaving city
leaders to address the causes of inequality across the country themselves. He also praised the virtues of paid sick leave and universal prekindergarten — two of his signature issues — but said he intends to “look beyond the five boroughs for smart, progressive ideas.” Following the address, de Blasio said he speaks with other leaders on a regular basis, including Mayor Rahm Emanuel, whom he had a private meeting with while in D.C. De Blasio said he felt other mayors are ready to work together to take on inequality. “People are feeling this all over the country,” he said. “Mayors feel it profoundly because we’re close to the ground.”

An orphaned walrus who arrived in Brooklyn in 2012 has moved to Texas while renovations continue at the New York Aquarium. Mitik, rescued off the coast of Alaska, joined the Coney Island family just weeks before superstorm Sandy hit and damaged the aquarium. The walrus was moved to SeaWorld San Antonio
on Jan. 14, The New York Times reported. He will stay there until the renovation is finished, a project expected to last two years. Mitik weighed 236 pounds when he first came to Brooklyn. He weighed in at 700 pounds before being shipped out last week, according to the Times. He suffered from myriad health problems as
a young calf, but his health issues were resolved before he left, the aquarium’s director said. Bust. Mobster nabbed for 1978 ‘Goodfellas’ JFK Airport heist Five people said to be part of a New York crime family were arrested on Thursday, including a 78-year-old man accused of participating in a notorious 1978 airport heist that inspired the movie “Goodfellas.” More than three decades after $5 million in cash and $1 million in jewelry was stolen from a Lufthansa airlines building at John F. Kennedy International Airport, the FBI arrested Vincent Asaro, an alleged leader of the Bonanno organized crime family, on robbery charges. Four other men, who prosecutors said were
members of the New Yorkbased gang, were arrested for other crimes. “Vincent Asaro devoted his adult life to the Bonanno crime family, with a criminal career that spanned decades,” said U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch in a statement. “Neither age nor time dimmed Asaro’s ruthless ways, as he continued to order violence to carry out mob business in recent months.” At the time of the JFK caper, the currency was being shipped to a U.S. bank from West Germany and the theft was the biggest cash heist ever in the United States. Student Social Media Guidelines
Media Guidelines” aim to teach teens how to be responsible while communicating online. “It is important to recognize that access to information can result in tremendous advantages, but it can also create new responsibilities of which students should be aware,” the guide begins. The city advises teens to use social media to establish a positive image and to take responsibility for content they’ve posted. Cyber bullying, the guide warns, should be taken seriously. The city also tells students to consider consequences of social media in the classroom. “Using social media academically is an extension of your classroom environment,” the guide says.

In Brooklyn
Teen arrested in multiple robberies, rape attempt A 15-year-old boy has been charged in a string of recent robberies and a rape attempt that took place in Manhattan, police said. Kalief Jackson, of Brooklyn, has been charged with attempted rape, sexual abuse and multiple counts of robbery and burglary. Police said that Jackson approached a 34-year-old victim inside a residential building on East 116th Street early Sunday morning and placed his hand over her mouth. He stated that he had a firearm and then took her to an isolated part of the building, where he tried to rape her. The victim was able to break free, and Jackson fled from the area. Jackson is also accused of at least seven
robberies between Jan. 15 and Jan. 19. He reportedly stole cellphones, cash, a Canada Goose coat, a debit card and a MetroCard, police said. During one of the robberies, Jackson allegedly touched a 28-year-old victim’s genitals over her clothing and then forced her to touch his genitals over his clothing, police said. Police say that Jackson simulated a firearm in some of the robberies. In one incident, the victim reported that Jackson displayed a firearm. LAURA SHIN

Report: NSA telephone data collection is illegal The board. Their review was based in part on classified briefings and documents. The U.S. National Security Agency’s bulk collection of phone records provides only minimal benefits to countering terrorism, is illegal and should end, a federal privacy watchdog said in a report released on Thursday and reviewed by Reuters. The watchdog agency’s report could further complicate efforts by both President Barack Obama and Congress to come up with possible reforms to NSA eavesdropping The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, which produced the new report, is an independent government agency with-
Legal ground The board’s conclusion that NSA’s bulk collection of Americans telephone metadata lacks legal grounding goes further than those of both the president and an ad hoc committee he created to review NSA eavesdropping activities.

in the executive branch that advises the President and Congress on how to ensure that counterterrorism operations also protect Americans’ privacy. In its report, the board called on the government to end the NSA program that collects U.S. telephone records in bulk and to purge the data it had collected, adding ammunition to efforts by privacy advocates to
win new restrictions on government surveillance programs. “The Section 215 bulk telephone records program lacks a viable legal foundation under Section 215, implicates constitutional concerns under the First and Fourth Amendments, raises serious threats to privacy and civil liberties as a policy matter, and has shown only limited value,” the board said in its report.
In its report released last month, the review panel also raised questions about the value of telephone metadata collection in producing counter terrorism breakthroughs. The panel recommended that metadata collection should continue, but that data should henceforth be stored either by telephone companies or an independent third party.

In a jam. Prosecutors subpoena documents in NJ bridge scandal The U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey has issued subpoenas to Gov. Chris Christie’s campaign and the state Republican Party for documents related to George Washington Bridge lane closures, a lawyer for both groups said Thursday. Federal prosecutors are looking into the incident in September when top Christie aides are believed to have orches-

The governor, who is widely seen as a top Republican contender for the White House in 2016, has said he had no direct knowledge of the incident, which is also under investigation by a state legislative committee. Last week, Democratic lawmakers called for a congressional inquiry into the hacking of credit and debit card data of tens of millions of customers of the No. 3 U.S. retailer during holiday shopping. Privately owned luxury retail chain Neiman Marcus has said it too was victim of a cyber attack. REUTERS

Of all the news rumbling down the pike this week, I hated most hearing that Muskrat Susie and Muskrat Sam are no longer doing the jitterbug. Love kept them together for 39 years, but now Captain and Tennille will no longer be belting out their hits together, cuddling for the crowd or pretending to be part of some obscure navy. To be honest, all of that stage stuff ended years ago, and they’re both in their 70s. Still, I hated to hear about their split. About 2.1 million marriages are formed in the United States annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control. (Insert your joke here about why that agency would be tracking such matters.) People like to claim “50 percent of marriages end in divorce and while that is a misinterpretation of the math, it is fair to say we act less committed to the institution than we were, oh say, back in the

1950s. Perhaps with reason. Marriage is undeniably used at times to force women into roles that not all women like. Certainly some marriages, kept together out of sheer dogma, have thrust both adults and children into years of hellish unhappiness. And maybe, as some argue, in our age of increased mobility and longevity the idea of
spending a lifetime with just one other person is antiquated. But a strong marriage can also make for a strong personal economy. One of the chief reasons people sink into poverty is that they are trying to raise a child alone, and that is a hard, expensive job. Having a committed partner can help. I suspect that is also a reason some researchers have found married people live longer and healthier lives. There is nothing wrong with remaining single, and I’m not favoring one type of marriage over another. Furthermore, I readily admit that most marriages have flaws. I’m just saying marriage, as difficult as it is and as old-fashioned as this may sound, also provides millions of Americans with stability, warmth and reliable jitterbug partners. Not a bad thing, especially when times are hard in Muskrat Land.

Best Super Bowl ads
PLUS No 1:
The Budweiser Clydesdales
“This choice makes me seem like the sentimental sucker that I am, but this is at the top of my list,” claims Wheaton. Why? “This year it’s going to have a baby Clydesdale — and a puppy.”
1
The real show. You won’t want to miss these commercials.
Super Bowl XLVIII is shaping up to be most expensive in history, with tickets selling for over $3,000. But that’s nothing compared to what advertisers are shelling out for a 30-second commercial — their bill will be in the $4 million range. That high price tag means companies are looking to get “the most bang for their buck” with their spots, notes Ken Wheaton, managing editor of Advertising Age. “You gotta get people talking even before the game.” To build up this critical buzz, expect to see many commercials released before the big game online, where advertisers hope they will be picked up and shared via social media, en masse. Axe Deodorant has already released its

commercial, with Toyota, Audi, Volkswagen and Oikos sharing “teasers” or trailers at press time. Releasing ads online before the big game is strategic for another reason — they can be more creative (and longer). Most people remember the Volkswagen spot from 2011, which featured a child dressed as Darth Vader. Volkswagen was smart and ran a longer version online;
by the time that year’s Super Bowl came around, millions of people had already seen that version. However, Wheaton notes that too much build-up can backfire. Take Jaguar’s high-concept ad this year that revolves around British villains, with teasers running in the playoffs. “It’s too convoluted for a Super Bowl ad,” he says. But there are some that Wheaton is excited for:
Doritos’ Crash the Super Bowl contest. Since 2006, Doritos has hosted a contest where consumers make their own ads, with the top two or three getting on air. Wheaton says that one is being viewed around Advertising Age’s offices: “The Finger Cleaner.” “It’s hilarious, but it’s so weirdly dirty I don’t know if they’ll be able to put it on the air.” Wheaton notes that the Doritos spots are “cheap laughs” — but they’re funny, nonetheless. Plus, “it’s good to see what people are capable of creating outside of advertising agencies.”
3
Kia. “I just don’t know about this one,” he says about the car manufacturer. “I never know if they’ll be excellent — but they really do pull out all the stops and come out with
these crazy ads.” Wheaton points to the Kia spot from 2012 that featured Motley Crue, supermodel Adriana Lima and MMA fighter Chuck Liddell. “It was really over-the-top.”
4
Coke. “They usually have something sentimental, or sappy or funny,” he says. “But Coke always does a great job with a big event like the Super Bowl.”
5
Chrysler. It’s not yet known whether the company has bought airtime, says Wheaton, who notes this tactic could work in their favor: “People like to have some surprise left. If you see it beforehand, it robs the event of its magic.”

The Grammys: Lip-licking good Music’s biggest night. Here is what to be on the lookout for when tuning in on Sunday. What makes the Grammys are the performances. The programmers know this, which is why in recent years they have featured less trophy presentations and more oddball pairings of performers that you wouldn’t necessarily think would work together. The results often vary from stunning to excruciating, which is why we tune in. Here’s what to look for on Sunday night.
Getting lucky? Pharrell Williams had his hand in two of 2013’s mega hits, Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” the latter of which he’ll perform with everybody’s favorite helmeted Frenchmen. With Nile Rodgers and Stevie Wonder also joining in this jam, you can feel it all over, especially as it’s rumored they’ll go into Wonder’s classic “Sir Duke.” It will also be surprising if you don’t see Williams at the podium to accept an award at least once. He’s nominated for seven!
‘Radioactive’ duet One of the worst mo-
ments in Grammy history happened in 2006, when Linkin Park, Jay Z and Paul McCartney tried to Key: Turquoise = What create mashups featurshould win ing their music. (In 2006, Red = What will win mashups were still new and musicians were still figuring out how to accompany rappers.) Blurred horn lines You remember Robin Thicke from the VMAs? He was the one guy that Miley Cyrus grinded upon who wasn’t dressed like a stuffed animal. Anyway, he’s being given another shot at awards-show glory, and he’s sharing the stage with the legendary horn outfit Chicago. So he had something different in mind when he told Cyrus right before their duet that he wanted “something horny”?

different from any Rock and Roll Hall of Fame jam is that we can’t think of a single song all of these guys would like. It will be a mess, but at least it will be a fun mess.
Music’s last couple Wouldn’t it be sublime if hip-hop’s royal couple silently acted out a dramatic scene
while Lorde performed her multi-nominated “Royals”? Think about how much that “you can call me Queen Bey” part would resonate! Or maybe Jay Z and Beyonce could do “Love Will Keep Us Together,” as a tribute to Captain and Tennille, who announced earlier this week they are divorcing.

Patton Oswalt finds comedy in tragedy (and other things) Story rants. The comic’s one-hour Epix stand-up special may or may not include a Judy Blume recitation and a fog machine. When Epix dropped the ball on airing Patton Oswalt’s new one-hour comedy special, “Patton Oswalt: Tragedy Plus Comedy Equals Time, on its scheduled premiere, Jan. 16 (they ended up airing it the following night), he went on a very Patton Oswalt-esque Twitter rant. Watch @parksandrecnbc instead. (Oswalt is a big fan of “Parks and Recreation.) Being the stand-up (get it?) guy he is, however, Oswalt didn’t want to let down the fans. He went on to tweet a “version of the special — recorded last July at Spreckels Theatre in San Diego — that included a full recitation of the third chapter of Judy Blume’s “Wifey and an impression of Rhea Perlman “doing Jules’ speech from the end of ‘Pulp Fiction’ with a fog machine. (Note: Neither of those things are in the actual special. We sort of wish they were.) We caught up with Oswalt to talk about his stint on “Parks and Recreation, his deep nerdiness, embracing a bad stand-up experience and more.

Can you recall a moment from your early days when you totally bombed? I have so many moments where I’ve bombed that they’ve kind of blended into this giant amorphous non-memory. But what I remember even more than the bombing is the day after the bombing, where you wake up and the world didn’t end. Once you embrace that, you’re free. How long would you say it took you to embrace that? Oh God, like, six, seven years. My ego held onto thinking that it was the center of the universe way longer than it should have. I told my friend, a fan, I
was going to talk to you. He described your style of stand-up as “story ranting. Thoughts? Story ranting. Wow. That’s a very good description of what I do. Tell your friend thank you. I might actually use that. I’m serious. You tend to play really nerdy characters — what’s the nerdiest thing that you’re willing to admit about yourself? I can recite movies like “Jaws and “Blade Runner from beginning to end. Literally recite them. That’s a level of nerdiness that other nerds look down on.

Would you want to make the movie you described in your “Star Warsâ€? ďŹ libuster from “Parks and Recâ€?? Jeez, if I had the time and money and resources, and was able to call on the people that I needed to do that, of course I would. If I was some insane billion-
aire, sure I would.
You could start a Kickstarter. “I need $5 billion.â€? How long did it take to get that scene down? It was one take. That whole scene, you saw it all, it was all o the top of my head.
Is that how your mind usually works? No, it was racing, because I really love “Parks and Rec and really didn’t want to do a bad job. They told me I only had to speak for 30 seconds, but they never yelled cut, to mess with me. ... That’s pure terror that you are looking at.

Sex picture. A pickup site gets hit by a murderer in the nuditydrenched “Stranger by the Lake.” Unlike their female counterparts, gay men in movies can be personalized but rarely sexualized. It’s a safe bet that the French film “Stranger by the Lake” features more man-onman action — and, for that matter, more unclad male members — than nearly any film outside of pornography. And yet it’s garnered a fraction of the crossover buzz of “Blue is the Warmest Color,” despite being a superior sex and relationship movie. The setting is a cut-off rural lakeside that has become a hopping cruising site, patronized by our strapping, youngish hero Franck (Pierre Deladonchamps). Despite the
specific setting and subject matter, Franck could be anyone fumbling through any dating scene, especially because he does, in fact, want love. After several false starts and dead ends, he thinks he finds it in Michel (Christophe Paou), whose Tom Selleck mustache summons up a bygone era. Thing is, Franck one night witnessed Michel drowning his former boy toy, a development that doesn’t stop Franck from carrying on a fling. The first half is content to hang out and observe, with deadpan glee, the sometimes amusing inner Review ‘Stranger by the Lake’ Director: Alain Guiraudie Stars: Pierre Deladonchamps, Christophe Paou Rating: NR

workings of this microcosm. The second is eaten up by an investigation into the death. Here, the film becomes glaringly metaphorical, using a horror/ thriller plot to get at something deeper. This isn’t the first film to explore the connections between desire and danger. But “Stranger by the Lake” is also about something more specific. Michel’s secret homicidal leanings, along with his general sense of mystery, stand in for the fear that comes during early relationships with getting to know someone. Franck lusts after Michel, but he’s both drawn to and afraid of taking their love to a more serious level. Michel’s murderous streak could be replaced by a weird kink or a moderately irksome psychological defect — something that keeps us from wholeheartedly embracing and giving one’s life to another.

Art film. Godfrey Reggio’s latest is maddeningly simple — or is it? What is “Visitors”? For starters it’s a film by Godfrey Reggio, who made the 1984 maximalist mainstream art film “Koyaanisqatsi” — the one with fast-forwarded images of urban life set to a crazy-making Philip Glass score. It’s 74 shots, each in crisp, digital black-andwhite. Most show people looking back at you. Occasionally Reggio throws in something else: a gorilla; a decaying, depopulated building; the moon. Is it a trance film? Yes and no. We could turn our

brains off. But any two images cut together create meaning. And so we, the viewers, are forced, when an edit comes up, to infer that a message is being conveyed. But unlike with the tut-tutty “Koyaanisqatsi,” meaning isn’t clear. Yet there are suggestions of ideas — just ones that aren’t, intentionally, developed. “Visitors” is that rare film: soothing yet maddening. MATT PRIGGE

‘Bridges’ to Broadway Theater. We spoke to four forces from this new musical.
“The Bridges of Madison County started as a novel by Robert James Waller, but many know it from the 1995 movie starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. Now it’s back again — as a new musical on Broadway. We had the stars tell us more about it.

“[My character] travels the world alone, taking pictures, living very much the life of a gypsy artist. And he finds, in Francesca, the first-ever feeling of true connection with another person, and it’s the single most powerful thing that ever happens to him. We tell our story from present-day Iowa in 1965, and we also tell the
story through Robert’s memory, so you learn about characters like Marian, his ex-wife. And we learn things through Francesca’s memory, so we travel to Italy and we learn about her big sister and we learn about her life as a child. So it’s really told on three different planes — but at its heart and core, of course, it’s a love story.

Mug shot musings
Blood ‘Brothers.’ Damien Jurado is still chasing his dream
The Metro staff shares some feelings on the mug shot:
Singer/songwriter Damien Jurado says he and collaborator Richard Swift have “completed the circle.” / REDFERNS VIA GETTY IMAGES
In his 17-year career of delivering tender transmissions of the heavy-hearted, Damien Jurado has become known as one of the great somber songsmiths of his generation. Recently, however, Jurado has changed his tune. After a life-changing dream about a man who disappears, never to return, Jurado’s sound and vision have evolved into a beautiful two-part psychedelic and cinematic soundtrack to his own soul-searching. On “Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son,” released this week, Jurado returned to the studio with singer/ songwriter and producer Richard Swift for a proper sequel to 2012’s “Maraqopa,” the album that first references that dream. “After I made ‘Saint Bartlett,’ [in 2010] my life just went to hell in a handbasket,” Jurado confesses. “I wasn’t leaving the house. I got mentally sick. I had a few nervous breakdowns. It was a really bad scene, man. And then I had this dream and my life sort of changed after that.” With a sound both ethereal and triumphant, “Brothers and Sisters” is as dark as it is dreamy. Lush and layered vocals culminate in falsettos that seem to soar to the heavens as the patter of drums and

celestial shimmer of keys lead to a newfound towering sound. With his lyrics masked in metaphor and laden with religious allusions, Jurado is no longer carrying the emotional weight of his characters, but helping them find transcendence. This is no longer a trip through the terrain of traditional Americana, but instead a path toward salvation. “I’ve completed the circle now,” says Jurado. “Up until now I made records that I thought would please critics. That’s a very hard thing to admit. I’m not a conformist by any means and I really hate bulls—. I was trying to please fans that wanted songs like ‘Ohio’ and ‘Sheets.’ I think those are great, solid songs, and I’m glad that people like those songs, but those songs aren’t me. Richard called me out on it. ... He made me throw down my guitar and say, ‘Screw this; I’m going to be exactly what I was created to be but spent years denying.’” NOLAN GAWRON
JUSTIN BIEBER ARRESTED
The Miami Police department used Twitter to release what is probably the first of many Bieber mug shots. “@justinbieber #MUGSHOT,” @MiamiBeachPD wrote.
There’s been a reckoning coming for Justin Bieber for a while now. It may have finally caught up with him. The pop star was arrested Thursday morning in Miami Beach for driving under the influence and drag racing, according to Detective Vivian Hernandez with the Miami Beach Police — apparently the young pop star failed a field sobriety test after he was pulled over. He was also driving

Apparently, Bieber’s entourage had blocked off Miami streets with their cars so that Bieber could have the road to himself for a drag strip. “Kid needs help,” police spokesman Bobby Hernandez told the Miami New Times. TMZ says the police report indicates Bieber “reeked” of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and appeared to be in a

Get off that high horse (or Schwinn); after all, you wouldn’t have your beloved bikes without our “machines of laziness” to manufacture, deliver, sell and repair them. You, sir, may not be lawless, but you are clueless.

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.
The staff of office Re: ‘Jersey justice’ (Metro, Jan. 23) There are staff — and staff. When you manage McDonald’s or Dunkin’ Donuts, you cannot monitor how every member of your staff is dealing with customers or what he is pouring in a cup. The office of an elected governor is not a store. “Laissez-faire” is a style of leadership; but is it good for someone who want to go to the White House? Do you think that the lieutenant governor is also an uncontrollable member of staff? JEAN KAZADI, VIA EMAIL

Anthony named starting All Star The Knicks may be struggling through one of their most underachieving seasons ever, but that didn’t stop one member from earning a prominent achievement. Let there be ice: Devils, Rangers visit Stadium NHL. The Stadium Series comes to the Bronx this weekend, with all three local teams to take the ice.
On an Island
JOHN TAVARES
In his 20th season with the New Jersey Devils, there is not much left for Martin Brodeur to accomplish. The Hall of Famer in waiting is merely the NHL’s all-time leader in games played, minutes played, saves, wins and shutouts. And then there is the matter of the three Stanley Cups he was the Devils’ backstop. The Montreal native has experienced a great deal in his career. But on Sunday he will do something he has never had the opportunity to do as a professional: He will play in his first outdoors game. “I’ve never done it and I don’t know what to expect,” Brodeur said. The Devils will host the Rangers Sunday afternoon in the first of two Stadium Series games this week at Yankee Stadium. The Stadium Series games mark the first time the NHL has selected the Devils and Islanders to participate in an outdoor game. The Rangers played in the Jan. 2, 2012, Winter Classic game in Philadelphia, where they beat the Flyers 3-2. “The whole thing was kind of awesome,” Brian Boyle said. “‘HBO [24/7]’ was a blast. Keeping up with the series, watching the TV shows, that was fun. It was a beautiful day out, everyone was there see it. [It was] something

new that I’ve never experienced before. It was awesome.” The teams will have practices at Yankee Stadium in order to get accustomed to the rink and conditions. Both the Devils and Rangers will skate Saturday, while the Islanders will skate Tuesday. “That’s why for me and [Cory Schneider] the practice [Saturday afternoon] will be really

important for us just to get used to everything,” Brodeur said, specifically noting the weather and lighting as key factors. According to weather reports, it is expected to be 22 degrees and partly cloudy on Sunday, which should limit the glare from the sunlight reflecting off the ice.

The Rangers and Devils start the festivities on Sunday, but the Islanders will also get on the Yankee Stadium ice. “Being outside, under the stars, under the lights at Yankee Stadium, that kind of venue with this rivalry it makes it a great event and a great opportunity for a great game,” Islanders captain John Tavares said. “[I’m] looking forward to all those many things that come about it.” Players on all three teams seem to be excited to take part in the first NHL game at Yankee Stadium. “Just to be part of it is going to be fun,” Brodeur said. “It’s probably the last chance I have to play in one of those, so I’ll definitely enjoy it regardless of what happens. My family will be there and we’ll take it in stride and enjoy the moment. It’s a big game but I think I’m going to enjoy every moment of it, regardless.” DENIS GORMAN

The most impressive streak in the NHL this season came to an end Tuesday as the Jets beat the Ducks, 3-2, at the Honda Center, handing Anaheim its ďŹ rst loss in regulation at home (20-1-2). The Ducks are sure to get over it and, if anything, not having to talk about it is probably a good thing moving forward.

Blackhawks (32-8-12)
Sharks (32-12-6)
Lightning (29-16-5)
Canadiens (27-18-5)
Rangers (27-22-3)
Chicago won its ďŹ rst Stanley Cup rematch with Boston in a shootout. Corey Crawford was the third star of the week in the NHL.
Very quietly, the Sharks are putting together another great regular season and they are in good position for homeice advantage.
With Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard’s knee injury, Tampa Bay goaltender Ben Bishop should leave his phone on until Feb. 11.
Montreal has treaded water lately, going 4-4-2 in its last 10 games. They have only scored 126 goals and their goal dierential is a meager minus-6.
Madison Square Garden is called the “World’s Most Famous Arena, but don’t tell that to the Rangers, who are 12-12-3 there, but 15-10-0 on the road.

The Blues have slowed down a little bit but they are still only four points back of Chicago with two games in hand.
The Avs are coming o one of their worst games of the season, a 5-2 loss to Toronto on Tuesday. Colorado is 7-2-1 in its last 10.
LA lost its last two games and is 4-4-2 in its last 10. Things won’t get any easier as the Kings play two this week vs. Anaheim.
Don’t look now but the Maple Leafs are playing like one of the hottest teams in the NHL with six straight wins.
Steve Mason (19-11-5, 2.56 GAA and .915 save percentage) signed a three-year extension over the weekend.

Boston is enjoying its ďŹ nal extended rest between games before the Olympics. They are in Philadelphia on Saturday.
Henrik Sedin’s ironman streak (679 games) is over as he missed Tuesday night’s game in Edmonton (2-1 Canucks win).
Throwing out a no-show in Dallas on Tuesday (a 4-0 loss), the Wild are playing well (7-3-0 in their last 10 games).
You are a true NHL junkie if you know the Blue Jackets are one of the hottest teams in the league after beating LA on Tuesday.
