Burglar cuts holes through store ceilings Police are on the lookout for a man caught on camera in connection with two Queens burglaries. The suspect cut holes through the ceilings of Ozone Park businesses in both incidents, authorities said. The first reported incident took place sometime between Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at a 99 cent store. The man allegedly climbed through the store’s ceiling and took cash. Surveillance cameras at the second burglary caught the suspect at a Pioneer Supermarket on Feb. 5 close to the 99 cent store. Wearing a hoodie and a headlamp, the man broke through the ceiling about 3:52 a.m. and made off with lottery tickets, calling cards and cash. The NYPD asks anyone with information regarding the burglary or any of the men pictured to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.

“The historic amounts of snow have also managed unprecedented wear and tear on our city’s streets,” de Blasio said. The ice and snow have caused road surfaces to expand, contract and eventually fracture, leading to troublesome potholes across the five boroughs. Increased snowplow and salt use can also damage streets.
“All of this adds up to a lot more potholes, a lot more quickly,” de Blasio said. As part of a comprehensive plan to tackle the pothole problem, the city is adding $7.3 million to the transportation budget and launching pothole “blitzes.” Crews will be dispatched across the five boroughs beginning this weekend through March to fill the pesky craters. Watching de Blasio patch up the pothole on her street, Joi Schlapp, 53, said she was pleased with the mayor’s road work. “But probably in a couple days it will be sunk again,” she said.

Health. Agreement is reached to help keep LICH doors open Elected officials are claiming victory in the struggle to keep Long Island College Hospital open. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Bill de Blasio and SUNY Chairman H. Carl McCall issued a statement on Thursday celebrating what they called a “winwin agreement” to end all related litigation, includ-
ing the pending lawsuit that has prevented SUNY Downstate Medical Center from selling LICH. The agreement would allow SUNY to break away from LICH no later than May 2014 while somehow ensuring continuity for its patients during the bidding process. CHESTER JESUS SORIA

Disease. Students contract mumps at Fordham University Eight students at Fordham University’s Rose Hill campus in the Bronx have contracted mumps, according to an email sent to students on Wednesday. One student was diagnosed with the illness last month, and seven more were diagnosed this week, the university said. “All the students with suspected mumps infections have either returned home or have been isolated from other residents Diagnosis Eight students at Fordham University are sick so far. •

It starts with a few days of fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite, and is followed by swelling of the salivary glands. Wi-Fi and cell phone service is coming to more subway stations this summer as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority rolls out the next push to connect commuters. Starting next month, Transit Wireless and the MTA will begin the second phase of their efforts to provide service throughout the city’s subway system. Officials expect more Wi-Fi and cell service to be installed by June, beginning with 11 new stations in Midtown, including Grand Central Terminal, 34th Street/Herald Square and Bryant Park. The entire borough of Queens is also expected to be connected
by the summer. Some 250 million annual riders with major cell providers will benefit from the upcoming wireless installations. Last year, the existing 36-station Wi-Fi network processed more information than the Hubble Space Telescope has collected in two decades. The MTA aims to connect all 277 underground stations with wireless by 2017.

Bronx. Man accused of attempted rape at nursing home A Bronx nursing home employee is accused of attempting to rape a 64-year-old patient who cannot communicate, officials said. Nurse Nanic Aidasani, 42, was arraigned Wednesday after police said he tried to rape the Manhattanville Health Care Center patient while she was sleeping sometime overnight into Tuesday. Aidasani was allegedly found on top of the patient, who suffers for global aphasia and dementia, “moving his body in a back and forth motion,” according to the criminal complaint. His bail was set at $20,000 cash or bond. Aidasani’s next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, according to the Bronx District Attorney’s Office. Aidasani’s attorney did not immediately respond

A 41-year-old woman was punched in the face during a robbery in Queens earlier this month, police said. The incident occurred at 5:15 a.m. on Feb. 8. The victim was walking near 134th Avenue and Rockaway Boulevard when she was approached by a man, who punched her in the face, displayed a gun and demanded property, police said. The victim complied, and four suspects fled with the victim’s property. Police released surveillance photos of two male suspects and two female suspects. OBAMACARE: FEELING BETTER Amid the Ukrainian turmoil, the Olympic headlines and Ted Nugent’s apparent breakdown from what I can only assume is cat scratch fever, you may have missed a small news item: Obamacare is doing better. Back before the holidays, you could hardly hear yourself think in D.C. amid all the cursing Democrats and chuckling Republicans. The Affordable Care website was still seemingly held together with paper clips and string. Stories were erupting about insurance companies dropping customers like stones in the sea, while the White House frantically argued that Barack Obama never precisely said, “If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan.” (For the record, he said those
exact words at a town hall meeting in Wisconsin, and similar phrases many other times.) And everyone was watching the number of Obamacare enrollees lag far behind projections. For a while, it looked like the administration’s poor handling of the program might accomplish what legions of angry opponents could not, reducing it to bureaucratic shambles unable to support its own weight. Now, however, sign-ups are surging with 3.3 million on board at the end of January. Are they on track to hit 7 million by the end of March as hoped? No. Vice President Joe Biden admitted as much this week when he said that 5 or 6 million enrollees would be “a hell of a start.” (And for the record, what matters more is who signs up; about 40 percent need

World powers and Iran make ‘good start’ in Vienna Six world powers and Iran made a “good start” in talks in Vienna toward reaching a final settlement in the decade-old stand-off over Tehran’s nuclear program, but conceded that their plan to get a deal in coming months was very ambitious. By late July, Western governments hope to hammer out an accord that would lay to rest their suspicions that Iran is seeking the capability to make a nuclear bomb, while Tehran wants a lifting of economic sanctions. Wide differences remain on how this could be achieved, although the two sides said they agreed during meetings this week on what to discuss and a preliminary timetable for the talks on such an accord. salesmen who have had recent fantastical, unlikely success with veggies like kale and Brussels sprouts. “I think ‘Celery’ embodies — even though it’s more genre-specific than some of our other sketches — I think it really embodies the traits of the show that I think are the most successful,” says Brownstein, “which is taking a relatable, sometimes timely premise and veering into the absurd, and then hopefully veering even more into surreality, and then somewhere at the heart of this, having some relatable characters that are suffering through genuine and authentic relationship issues.” Just because they use familiar ingredients for their recipe doesn’t mean the show is formulaic. Yes, you will see a lot of the characters you’ve seen in the previous three seasons, but
in preposterous situations: Candace and Toni, the owners of Women and Women First bookstore, host a carwash fundraiser; Lance and Nina — Brownstein and Armisen’s gender-swapping couple — find themselves in conflict with Jeff Goldblum’s mattress salesman over a certain claim he has made that casts everything Lance stands for into doubt. “We’ll have pictures of the characters on a bulletin board and we’ll have an idea for something,” says Armisen, “and then we kind of shift the idea to each character, like, ‘I wonder if they would be good for this?’ And then eventually it will just resonate right away, and you’ll know it’s perfect for a set of characters.”

Two hours to snooze Though a good serious actor, Kevin Costner is always better when he’s having fun, as in “Silverado,” “Bull Durham” or in his recent spate of playing second fiddle in “The Upside of Anger” and “Jack Ryan.” On paper, “3 Days to Kill” sounds like the ideal comeback-to-the-lead project. (He hasn’t headlined a film since 2008’s “Swing Vote.”) He plays Ethan Renner, an aging secret service agent. It features two things Costner can do well: action and comedy. It’s co-written by Luc Besson, the Eurotrash auteur who, with “Taken,” turned Liam Neeson into an AARP-aged badass. But it turns out that things are worse than they seem: Ethan is dy-
ing. He returns to his Paris home to reconnect with his daughter, Zoey (Hailee Steinfeld). She’s an angry teen, rightfully peeved at a workaholic dad who’s been MIA most of her life. Action dramedy. Kevin Costner’s comeback machine sputters with the listless “3 Days to Kill.” py, fogey fighting romp. Costner isn’t having fun, spending the entire film speaking in a gruff grizzle that makes him sound like Christian Bale’s Batman. The only thing that distinguishes “3 Days to Kill” is its unthinking lack of good taste. Besson is an unapologetic vulgarian, and no one thought to edit out his script’s old-school “Brokeback Mountain” jokes or creepy acts like Ethan spying on Zoey’s Facebook. Director McG (“This Means War”) doesn’t call him on his stupidity, and the film’s lack of self-awareness is its most interesting trait.

Legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki (“My Neighbor Totoro,” “Spirited Away”) has reneged on his retirement plans. For whatever it’s worth, “The Wind Rises,” his latest but (maybe) not last, would make a great swan song. It’s the definition of an old master’s film, one that brings all that Miyazaki has learned to bear on a reflection of his craft. Miyazaki focuses on Jiro Horikoshi (voiced, in America, at least, by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who designed fighter planes during World War II. He

••••• would seem an odd person for Miyazaki to lionize, given that many of his films are passionately, unsubtly anti-war. But in Horikoshi
he sees a kindred spirit: an artist driven to create what he dreams, but one who has to use his talents for business needs with which he may not agree. But the war is, for the most part, offscreen. Horikoshi works in a bubble, removed from the end result of his actions. He busies himself in drawings and math, not the specifics at war. It’s the rare, delightful, soothing film about war, not to mention one that runs through regrets and an understanding of one’s mortality and imperfections. MATT PRIGGE

Oh my ‘Lawdy.’ Changing the world at any Price When Lloyd Price first heard his “Lawdy Miss Clawdy� on the radio 62 years ago, he didn’t know who was singing it. “I had never been in a recording studio before, and I sang it, and two takes later that was the end of it,� says the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, now 80 years old. “Five weeks later I was hearing myself on every radio station in town and not knowing who it was: There was no playbacks when I recorded!� Price’s single, which was arguably the first rock ‘n’ roll single ever, caused such a sensation with teenagers that the music industry had to rethink its entire marketing demographic, but Price believes it led to something even greater: “Those kids that marched to Washington, those are the ones that were buying this record,
having cab drivers take them to black record stores because they didn’t sell black records at white record stores. That was one of the key things about it: These kids loved the music so much they would send a cab across town to black record stores to buy those records,� he says. “I watched the change, and I can assure you the reason Barack Obama is the president today is because of these kids in the ’50s and ’60s. The DNA of those kids have changed the world. It’s all because of this music we call rock ‘n’ roll.� PAT HEALY

His claim that temperatures haven’t risen in the last 17 years is an example of cherry-picking.

Nets, Knicks pass on deals NBA dealing
NBA. Both New York teams stand pat as the NBA trade deadline comes and goes on Thursday. The Knicks and Nets are going in different directions, but they both followed the same school of thought on NBA trade deadline day: Do nothing. The Nets made a small trade on Wednesday, adding reserve guard Marcus Thornton from the Kings, but couldn’t pull anything bigger on Thursday. Rumors had them looking at former Knicks power forward Jordan Hill, but the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement. The Lakers decided to keep Hill at the trade deadline. The same goes for Iman Shumpert, who the Knicks tried dealing to the Clippers right up to the deadline for a pack-

Isles’ Snow angry over Tavares’ Olympic injury You can count Islanders general manager Garth Snow out as a fan of Olympic hockey. Snow ripped into the International Ice Hockey Federation and International Olympic Committee on Thursday over an injury to his star player, John Tavares, which will keep him out for the remainder of the 2013-14 season. “Are the IIHF or IOC going to reimburse our season ticket holders now?� Snow told Newsday. “It’s a joke. They want all the benefits from NHL players in Olympics and don’t want to pay when our best player gets hurt.� The team will not be reimbursed Tavares’ salary as MLB teams are for injuries during the World Baseball Classic. Tavares, who was playing for Canada, tore his MCL in the quarterfinal win against Latvia on Wednesday. He led the Islanders in goals (24) and assists (42). The Islanders were optimistic about the 2013-
age including point guard Darren Collison and Reggie Bullock. Shumpert sprained his knee Wednesday night, but the team said he should only miss about two weeks.
