Transit Police officers on patrol at the Tufts New England Medical Center station snagged a man for piggybacking behind a paying customer, only to find out he was wanted on numerous drug charges. Giovanny Perdomo, 35, of Jamaica Plain, attempted to evade paying the fare by sneaking in behind another rider. When officers approached him to give him a citation, they discovered there were several warrants out for his arrest. METRO

Trolley derails near Fenway, service cut Off the tracks. Ten people were treated for minor injuries after a Green Line car veered off the tracks. Investigators are looking into what caused a Green Line trolley to veer off the tracks Monday near Fenway Station, injuring 10 people and disrupting service throughout the day and evening. MBTA Spokeswoman Kelly Smith said officials were doing everything possible to restore service in time for the morning commute. “We have crews working feverishly to reach that goal. In terms of investigation it is still ongoing. They are investigating everything from the vehicle, to the signal, to the track, to the actions of the operator,” Smith said. The first car of a Riverside-

bound D Line trolley derailed inside a tunnel between Kenmore and Fenway stations around 12:20 p.m., causing another train to slam on its brakes. Boston EMS Spokesman Nick Martin said 10 patients were taken to hospitals “all with relatively minor injuries.” Boston Fire officials said some were hurt when the second train stopped short to avoid rear-ending the derailed train. The derailed trolley’s operators were among those injured. Photographs taken at the scene showed the derailed trolley resting against the tunnel wall, up against a vertical pipe. Witness recounts

“The front cart got derailed and crashed into the wall. Luckily almost everyone was seated …” Green Line passenger “Vin”

At 1:53 p.m., the MBTA announced that Green Line service on the C and D branches would not be restored for the rest of the day, as the accident happened near an intersection where the two lines cross. Passengers were transported by shuttle buses. As of press time, crews were working to get the trolley back on the tracks so it could be transported to an MBTA maintenance facility for inspection. One trolley passenger captured an 11-second video of the aftermath, and posted it on YouTube. The man, who asked to be identified as “Vin,” said in his video description that “the front cart got derailed and crashed into the wall. Luckily almost everyone was seated … Everyone seems to be fine aside from a few people feeling light headed.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @METROMORGAN

Marathon security will double, spectators asked to be vigilant Beefed up. Additional “common sense” security guidelines will be in place April 21.

Prohibited Spectators should not bring: •

With this year’s Boston Marathon expected to draw an additional 9,000 runners and a million spectators, security officials are beefing up security measures and pleading with the public to cooperate. Last year’s deadly bombings at the Boylston Street finish line prompted a slew of new restrictions along the 26.2 mile route, which this year will draw 36,000 runners. At a press conference Monday, Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency Director Kurt Schwartz said roughly 3,500 security officers will be dispersed along the route. There will also be security

Security officials want spectators to be especially vigilant and report any suspicious items or activity, and to leave backpacks and other items at home. Furthermore, spectators are encouraged to carry their items in clear plastic bags. Kieran Ramsey, an agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston office, said there is “no specific intelligence indicating there is a threat to this year’s marathon.” “At this point, we don’t have one, nor do we anticipate it,” Ramsey said. “In this world, you never eliminate risk. You never bring it down to zero. But we are working very hard at reducing the risk,” said State Police Col. Timothy Alben. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @METROMORGAN

Marathon bombing

Attorneys for accused bomber’s friends seeking more records Attorneys for three college friends of the accused Boston Marathon bomber who are charged with helping cover up evidence of the crime on Monday asked for more records related to their arrests. Defense attorneys for Robel Phillipos, Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakov said they needed notes of any statements they made before being advised of their right not to speak to police. “There were dozens and dozens of officers and after they were ordered out at gunpoint and stripped in public view and handcuffed, they were then left in patrol cars for several hours,” and may have made statements overheard by officers, one attorney said. Attorney General Eric Holder said his agency was stepping up efforts to stem sharp increases in deadly heroin overdoses, trafficking in the drug and abuse of prescription narcotics at the root of what he called an “urgent public health crisis.” As part of that campaign, Holder reiterated the Obama administration’s call for more law enforcement agencies to train and equip personnel with a medication called naloxone, which reverses the effects of an overdose. The director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy issued a similar plea to police and fire departments last month. Holder said 17 states and the District of Columbia have amended their laws to increase

access to naloxone, a blocking agent that can reverse the effects of an overdose and help restore breathing. The rising level of heroin use in recent years stems from a corresponding epidemic in the abuse of prescription opiate-based painkillers, such as oxycodone, DEA officials say. Many individuals who start out abusing oxycodone turn eventually to heroin as they build up a tolerance to the pills and find that they can buy heroin far more cheaply than prescription medications on the black market, experts say. She’s pulling the, ‘Who makes the money around here?’ card. It’s a s— show behind the scenes.” The Disney star checked in and out of rehab in January of this year. “The partying was, at times,

[Her parents] wanted to help her — and they very much encouraged her to go to rehab,” says the source. “Others very close to her also urged her to seek professional help.” For now, Mama and Papa Gomez are at a loss — so they have resorted to simply chaperoning the two. “They’re doing their best to supervise them. They’re tolerating it as long as they know that there is someone who has eyes on them all the time,” says the source.

Is this the only way to ‘Marry Smart’? Unpopular opinion. Think “Tiger Mom” is controversial? “Princeton Mom” and “Marry Smart” author Susan Patton has her beat.

Susan Patton, better known as “The Princeton Mom,” admits in her new book, “Marry Smart: Advice for Finding The One,” that she was “born without a politically correct gene.” And that’s paid off for Patton. After her open letter (“Find a husband before you graduate”) — originally sent to her alma mater, Princeton University — went viral, Patton landed herself a book deal. Most of Patton’s beliefs are politically incorrect — some, shockingly so. “I think date rape is a fallacy,” she says. “To refer to sex that a woman really didn’t feel like having but wound up having anyway because she didn’t know how to leave or regrets it — that’s not rape of any sort. That’s sex you wish you didn’t have. That’s mistake sex.” This idea is an expansion on a chapter in Patton’s book called “Behaving Badly.” Here’s a hint: She’s talking about women, not men. Given this rhetoric, it’s not surprising that Patton rejects feminism. “I certainly am an early beneficiary of the good works of the feminist movement,” she allows. “I used to think a feminist was somebody who believed women should be afforded equal opportunities and rights to men. It might have started that way, but it’s gone to the dark side. It’s an extreme position of demanding independence from men and looking at them as unnecessary. This is terrible for women.” Oddly enough, some of what Patton says is spoken like a true feminist. “A man’s not going to make you happy,”

METRO IS LOOKING TO HIRE

she says. “You have to make yourself happy.” For Patton, finding a husband is largely a means to an end — having a father for your child. “If you don’t want to have children or be married, then this book is probably not for you,” she says. Patton even says if having children isn’t a top priority, then “take your time. Date however many men you want.”

Most importantly, I had time to build trust in my own creative vision. I began printing stationery by hand in my basement because the only major cost was my time. After I had enough steady customers, I moved into goods like rubber stamps that require more capital to produce. Were you nervous about having the time to be both a mom and own a business?

I consider myself lucky to be able to afford child care. I am lucky to have a job, especially one that is flexible and fulfilling. For many caretakers, these options are not available. I will say that I am very satisfied with my full life — even if I am tired and wearing old paintstained maternity leggings. My husband and I have child care three days a week, and I often work on weekends and late at night to make up the time. There are days where I drop the ball at work and days I bawl because I’ve missed something special with my daughter. She just turned 2 and I’m just now

How to stay sane as a working parent

1

Ask for help. You will be most productive doing things that you are passionate about and assigning tasks to others when you can. Half the battle is just preventing burnout. It may mean less money in your pocket, and it may even mean less time with your kids, but consider it an investment in

your business, your family and preservation of your own overworked brain.

2

Don’t compare yourself to others. This is most important for caregivers who feel inadequate about work or parenting. Nobody else is in your exact same circumstance,

so judge yourself kindly and don’t look back.

3

Give yourself a damn break! Take some time to be neither a parent nor a business owner, even if it’s just taking a bath or watching TV. You will be better at both of these tough jobs if you chill out once in a while.

Wait it out Murphy recommends waiting until the weeks after spring break and Easter to get the better deals in coed-crawling places like the Caribbean. In the U.S., certain places in Florida – like Fort Lauderdale and South Beach — provide good value. Murphy recommends booking the off-peak days of the week to save some

cash. “Come in on a Sunday and leave on a Thursday,” he suggests. The advantage of visiting a tropical destination is that you can stay in an all-inclusive resort. It costs more to get there, but you save money. Also, look into cruise lines that sail out of Boston and New York, which provide allinclusive packages.

For tech-savvy travelers, Murphy’s best advice may come as a shock. “There are these people called travel agents,” he quips. “It’s the most obvious secret in travel booking. People feel they can do it themselves, until they screw it up — they overpay and realize they could have gotten a suite for the

The agents have special relationships with their suppliers, which means opportunities for free upgrades, access to car service and discounts. But word to the wise: “Not all are good,” he says.

Some women aren’t too tight with their ‘fashionable’ clothing Re: ‘Not your mom’s jeans’ (Metro, March 10) Letter writer Diane E. speaks for herself. I am not familiar with “mom jeans” other than the name. I wondered why they were used as an example of “bad fashion.” So they are “too baggy.” Probably, it is because

This was my second time being in the United States while the Olympics were on, as I saw London 2012 and Sochi 2014, I was very pleased to see all the media reports about them and how proud the country was with Team USA — and they should be. Anyway, both times I

NFL free agency now underway Free agency officially begins Tuesday in the NFL and it is still unknown as to how big of a player the Patriots will be. The Pats cut four relative unknowns Monday in receiver T.J. Moe, defensive lineman Cory Grissom, running back Sam McGuffie and linebacker Taylor Reed. It was reported by NFL Network Monday, however, that New England will re-sign tight end Michael Hoomanawanui to a twoyear deal. In moves that could possibly effect the Patriots’ plans: the Jets released wide receiver Santonio Holmes, the Steelers are expected to cut linebacker LaMarr Woodley and the 49ers are expected to release cornerback Carlos Rogers. Decisions by the Patriots will likely be made soon on their own free agents — headlined by cornerback Aqib Talib and slot receiver Julian Edelman. There are also rumblings about restructuring defensive tackle Vince Wilfork’s contract or even flat-out releasing the veteran. METRO Arms in order

Farrell sets pitching rotation Red Sox manager John Farrell isn’t leaving much to the imagination as the start of the 2014 season draws near. Farrell revealed Monday the rotation he is using in spring training will most likely be the same exact starting rotation that begins the regular season on March 31 in Baltimore, according to WEEI.com. The rotation is as follows: 1. Jon Lester; 2. John Lackey; 3. Felix Doubront; 4. Jake Peavy; 5. Clay Buchholz. METRO

The Madness should hit Boston area hard NCAA. New England schools are expected to be scattered across the brackets when the Big Dance begins.

March Madness A look at the state of several other New England schools: •

UConn is the only New England school with annual championship aspirations. The Huskies likely won’t win it all this year but head coach Kevin Ollie should be able to get his team a seed in the four-to-seven range. Of local note, UConn is led by senior point guard Shabazz Napier, a Roxbury, Mass., native who is averaging 17.8 ppg.

The best news for Boston College is they will avoid 25 losses in one season as they are currently 8-23 and can only lose once in this week’s ACC tourney.

March is here and the Madness awaits. In just five days we’ll know the full field of 68 and it is expected that New England will be well-represented. A look at where your school could be seeded:

Boston University The Terriers (24-9) won seven of their last eight conference games in the Patriot League and can make their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2011. BU still has some work to do as they will host American (19-12) in the league championship Wednesday (7:30 p.m., CBS). The two teams split their season-series, with American pounding the Terriers in D.C., 86-56, on Jan. 22 and BU edging the Eagles, 71-62, on Feb. 19. Guards D.J. Irving (12.5 ppg) and Maurice Watson Jr. (13.5 ppg) provide head coach Joe Jones with a dynamic backcourt while Dom Morris (11.2 ppg) has been tough up front. Big Dance Ceiling: No. 14 seed. Upset of a big-name program like Syracuse, Michigan, Kansas or Duke in the first weekend.

Harvard The Crimson (26-4) have established themselves as a dangerous opening weekend opponent for high seeds, climaxing with last year’s 68-62 upset of No. 3 New Mexico in Salt Lake City. Harvard is even more talented this season and the Crimson have already punched their ticket to the big dance, courtesy of their 70-58 win at Yale last week. Junior swingman Wesley Saunders By the numbers

The Harvard men’s basketball team has made three consecutive NCAA tournaments. It’s no small feat considering prior to 2012, the Crimson hadn’t made the tourney since 1946.

leads Harvard offensively, popping in 14.0 ppg. This is the third straight year Tommy Amaker’s squad has made the NCAAs. Big Dance Ceiling: No. 11 seed. A run to the Sweet 16 would be difficult but it’s never been more doable for Harvard.

MATT BURKE @BURKEMETROBOS

matthew.burke@metro.us

Vermont fell in the America East semifinals to Albany on Sunday and are all but assured to miss the tourney.

Providence is firmly on the bubble at 20-11. The Friars will likely need at least a pair of Big East tourney wins.

UMass-Amherst The Mullins Center has been rocking this season as UMass (23-7) raced out to a 16-1 record, but the Minutemen have stumbled lately, with losses to Dayton and Saint Louis to open March. That has gotten them a No. 6 seed in the A-10 tourney, which they will begin play in Thursday (9 p.m., NBCSN or CSNNE). Big Dance Ceiling: No. 4 seed. They’ll likely wind up in the six or seven seed range but would rise with a strong A-10 tournament showing this week.
