Backing Giddyap. The two main anti-carriage horse organizations in the city are feuding over what will replace the Central Park horses if carriage rides are finally banned. Pulling in the reins. One group says that proposed vintage-style electric cars is a good alternative for tourists, while the other says that the idea is a “risky investment.” PAGE 02

Clip-clop. In a rare feud, groups argue over whether electric cars should replace Central Park horses or not.
It’s safe to say that those who want to ban the carriage horse industry in New York City and those who want to save it don’t agree on much. Animal rights groups have cast the industry as cruel and inhumane to horses, while carriage drivers say the animals are well cared for under the umbrella of a highly regulated industry. But the pro-ban movement is split on one key issue. One activist, in a rare instance of agreement with the carriage drivers, says the electric cars Mayor Bill de Blasio touted in his campaign as a horseless alternative are an idea that needs to be put down. The prototype faux-vintage car, commissioned by pro-ban group New Yorkers for Clean, Livable, and Safe Streets for $450,000, is set to arrive in New York in June. NYCLASS is in the process of securing private financing for the rest of the fleet. “No one is losing their livelihood,” said NYCLASS Director Allie Feldman.
Dark horse
‘You can’t pet an electric car’ If the ban does go into effect, the drivers of the city’s 68 carriages will be out of work. The electric car plan would guarantee them jobs — if they entertained the idea of making the switch. Their medallions would transfer over. “Absolutely not,” said driver Sean Dennehy, standing next to his horse Blackie on Central Park South on Sunday. “I own my own
carriage. This is my whole life, you know. You can’t pet an electric car.” Asked on Monday when a bill banning
New industry
“No one is losing their livelihood. The drivers are simply switching from driving a horse carriage to driving the electric horseless carriage car.” Allie Feldman “The drivers are simply switching from driving a horse carriage to driving the electric horseless carriage car.” The carriage drivers, along with Elizabeth Forel of the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages, beg to differ. Of course, their reasons for opposing the cars are different. The drivers are horsemen, and find it galling
that NYCLASS talks about driving a car and driving a horse as if they were interchangeable jobs. For her part, Forel opposes the project because she sees it as expensive and unworkable, and unlikely to expedite the ban her coalition has been working toward. “No one in their right mind would invest big bucks for such a risky investment,” Forel said,
carriage horses might be introduced, the mayor’s office simply restated de Blasio’s commitment to ending the industry. pointing out that cars are not allowed to use the roads of Central Park on the weekend. The city’s Parks Department declined to comment on the issue. A better and cheaper option, Forel said, would be to retrofit existing carriages with motors. Feldman, in turn, said converted carriages would never pass federal highway safety requirements. Forel also took issue with the proposed threeyear phaseout, a time frame she said is three years too long. “One has to also know the mind-set of the drivers to know that you do not phase anything in with
them because to allow them to maintain a foothold is a huge mistake,” she said. Stephen Malone, a second-generation carriage driver and the spokesman for the Horse and Carriage Association of New York, called the proposed retro vehicle a “fantasy car.” “People here are businessmen,” he said. “What they want to do is steal our horses, then they want us to pay $1,700 a month for an untested business.” But according to Feldman, the cars are all but a done deal — and NYCLASS has the edge over Forel’s CBHDC in terms of influence. The group hitched its fortunes to de Blasio’s wagon when it played a key role in funding the super PAC “New York City Is Not For Sale,” which helped sink Christine Quinn in the mayoral election. “There is no ‘doubt’ about the fact that these electric cars will become a reality,” Feldman said. “The carriage horse industry is trying to sow the seeds of doubt because they have no actual arguments for the perpetuation of the unsafe and inhumane use of carriage horses in one of the most congested urban areas in the world.” EMILY JOHNSON @METRONEWYORK letters@metro.us

L’Wren Scott found dead in Chelsea apartment Style. The fashion maven reportedly committed suicide on Monday. L’Wren Scott, luxury fashion designer and Mick Jagger’s girlfriend, was found dead of a possible suicide in her Manhattan apartment Monday morning, according to police and published reports. The former model, believed to be 49 years old, was reportedly found around 10 a.m. with a scarf around her neck, hanging from a doorknob in her Chelsea home. Investigators don’t suspect foul play and no suicide note was found, according to the Associated Press. She was found after
texting her assistant to come over. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death. In a statement, a spokesperson for Jagger said the Rolling Stones frontman was “completely shocked and devastated” by the news. They first met in 2001. Scott’s designs have been worn by first lady Michelle Obama and celebrities like Nicole Kidman, Oprah Winfrey and Madonna. “This is a horrible and tragic loss,” Madonna said in a statement by her publicist to the AP. “I’m so upset. I loved L’Wren’s work and she was always so generous with me.” ANNA SANDERS @AnnaESanders anna.sanders@metro.us

“Half a million more people will have paid sick leave when they need it.” The bill, passed by City Council last month, would require businesses with five or more employees to give five days of paid sick off a year. De Blasio said he plans to sign the expansion into law later this week.
Most speakers at the hearing supported the bill. But Khristan Heagle, who said she represents city manages at Rothermel Jacobs & Schess LLP, raised concerns. “The truth is, we have many questions,” she said. When signed, the expansion would go into effect in April. ANNA SANDERS

They were completed last fall and are to be the centerpiece of a new tourist destination, The Helix, set to open this summer in Central Scotland. The title for the sculptures comes from supernatural water horses in Celtic folklore. A kelpie is believed to haunt Scottish and Irish rivers and lochs, delighting in the drowning of travelers. Let’s hope that doesn’t deter tourists from enjoying the sculptures. ANNA SANDERS @AnnaESanders anna.sanders@metro.us

in $56.4 million in state and local tax collections. State records show 1,145 drivers came from Manhattan and 1,146 from Queens. Some 1,078 Brooklyn tax evaders had their licenses cut off, as did 502 Bronxites and 323 Staten Islanders. CHESTER JESUS SORIA

Planning could hold key to plane disappearance Investigation. Police have searched the premises of both the captain and co-pilot. Whether by accident or design, whoever reached across the dimly lit cockpit of a Malaysia Airlines jet and clicked off a transponder to make Flight MH370 vanish from controllers’ radars flew into a navigational and technical black hole. By choosing one place and time to vanish into radar darkness with 238 others on board, the person — presumed to be a pilot or a passenger with advanced knowledge — may have acted only after meticulous planning, according to aviation experts. Understanding the sequence that led to the unprecedented plane hunt
widening across two vast tracts of territory north and south of the Equator is key to grasping the motives of what Malaysian authorities suspect was hijacking or sabotage. By signing off from Malaysian airspace at 1:19 a.m. on March 8 with a casual “all right, good night,” rather than the crisp radio drill advocated in pilot training, a person now believed to be the co-pilot gave no hint of anything unusual. Two minutes later, at 1:21 a.m. local time, the transponder — a device identifying jets to ground controllers — was turned off in a move that experts say could reveal a careful sequence. There is so far no indication whether the copilot was at fault or had anything to do with turning off the transponder. Pilots say the usual industry
A man gestures as he stands in front of messages of prayers and well-wishes for passengers of flight MH370. / GETTY IMAGES Quoted
“Every action taken by the person who was piloting the aircraft appears to be a deliberate one. It is almost like a pilot’s checklist.” A senior captain from an Asian carrier with experience flying jets including the Boeing 777
convention is that the pilot not directly responsible for flying the plane talks on the radio. Whoever turned the transponder to “off,” whether or not the move was deliberate, did so at a vulnerable point between two airspace sectors when Malaysian and Vietnamese controllers could easily assume the airplane was each others’ responsibility.

Imposed. Sanctions against 11 Russian, Ukrainian officials President Barack Obama on Monday imposed sanctions on 11 Russian and Ukrainian officials blamed for Russia’s military incursion into Crimea, including two top aides to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The sanctions were the most visible sign of U.S. anger at Russia’s attempt to absorb the Crimea region of southern Ukraine, reflecting the deepest plunge in U.S.-Russian relations since the Cold War.
The sanctions came in an executive order signed by Obama a day after a Crimea referendum on Sunday aimed at allowing Russia to annex the autonomous region, a vote that the U.S. says was illegal and would never be recognized by Washington. Obama warned that continued Russian military intervention in Ukraine would only increase Russia’s isolation and exact a greater toll on its economy. REUTERS

Third person dies from SXSW crash in Texas capital
Sony Pictures Entertainment on Monday will announce layoffs throughout its studio operations in the United States and abroad, according to a person familiar with the matter. Among the units that will be hit is the Sony interactive team that supports digital marketing, the source said on condition of anonymity because the information is not yet public. REUTERS
A third person has died as a result of a motorist plowing his car into a crowd of people outside a nightclub last week at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, officials said on Monday. A 26-year-old woman, Sandy Thuy Le, has died. She was one of the five people listed as being in critical condition after the incident last Thursday. Rashad Charjuan Owens, 21, from Killeen, Texas, has been charged with capital murder for the incident. Police said Owens fled from a sobriety checkpoint, smashed through a police barricade and then plowed down people, some of them lined up outside a nightclub, over a span of several city blocks.

GM is also recalling 303,000 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans to replace plastic material in the passenger instrument panel to meet federal head-impact crash standards for unbelted passengers.
General Motors Co. announced three more recalls on Monday, related to airbag deployment and other issues, and said it would take a $300 million charge primarily to cover the costs related to these actions as well as the previous recall for faulty ignition switches. The No. 1 U.S. automaker, which will take the charge in the first quarter, did not provide a breakdown of how much was related to the ignition-switch recall of more than 1.6 million older-model vehicles that
has hurt the company’s reputation since it was announced last month. GM said on Monday that it is recalling more than 1.5 million newer crossover utility vehicles, luxury sedans and fullsize vans in three separate recalls. While there were reports of engine compartment fires in two dealer-owned Cadillac XTS sedans, the company said it has received no reports of accidents or injuries related to the three new recalls. Affected are some 2008-2009 and all 20102013 Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia crossovers, some 2009 and all 20102013 Chevrolet Traverses and some 2008-2009 and all 2010 Saturn Outlooks. An electric guitar played by George Harrison on British television prior to the Beatles’ “invasion of the United States will go on the auction block along with a rare album cover signed by the Fab Four, Julien’s Auctions said on Monday. US forces seize tanker carrying oil from Libya rebel port U.S. special forces have seized a tanker that fled with a cargo of oil from a Libyan port controlled by anti-government rebels, halting their attempt to sell crude on the global market. Gunmen demanding regional autonomy and a share of oil wealth had managed to load the ship, which escaped Libya’s navy and triggered a crisis that prompted parliament to sack the prime minister. A U.S. SEAL commando team boarded the tanker Morning Glory from a Naval special warfare rigid inflatable boat as it sat in international waters off Cyprus on Sunday night. REUTERS

Conquering your cravings. Want a cookie? Try playing Tetris instead Playing a game of Tetris can reduce the strength of food and nicotine cravings, according to a new study. Researchers had used visual games to interrupt cravings before, but only when they had induced those cravings first, she said. For this study, people’s cravings happened — or did not happen — naturally. “We chose Tetris because we wanted a task that would be interesting, demanding and highly visual, coauthor Jackie Andrade said. Do you have time to hang out with your friends? I guess theoretically I can on Sunday nights. I’m not free Sunday mornings because I play the guitar and sing at a church. Then, I usually head over to my sister’s to see her, her husbands and kids. To be honest, when I do have free time, I don’t feel like going out to bars or to a club. I just want to order Chinese food, watch a movie and relax. Are you working multiple jobs to make ends meet or to live a certain lifestyle you want to lead? I don’t have a crazy lifestyle. When you work that much, there’s not much of a lifestyle you can have. If I just worked one job, I would just be able to make ends meet. But working more than one job allows me to put some money away for the future, whether it’s to buy an apartment or car or whatever I’ll need so I can actually have more of a life than just going from one day to the next. Are you happy with the way things are or are you working toward cutting down to one job?
“[Working three jobs] is a hectic lifestyle,” says Bradenburg. /PROVIDED
It would be great to just have one job, but I don’t really see that as a possibility for me, at least as far as my life is structured right now. Many, many years down the road maybe I’ll have my own martial arts academy and be able to just have one job, but I feel like it’s always going to be a balance between two or three jobs. Is there anything else
about yourself that you want to share? Usually people who have a very busy work life are very busy in their downtime as well. I do a lot of volunteer work in my spare time. There are so many great organizations out there that don’t need you to commit to a certain numbers of hours every month. Some just want help for one day here or there, or for a single event.

What do you think of when you hear the ďŹ gure “a million dollarsâ€?? Some people might imagine a winning lottery ticket, others the grand prize on a TV game show. But what if we were to suggest “a college educationâ€? as something even more likely to translate into money, along with all of its other beneďŹ ts? Take advantage of affordable tuition and a competitive degree. Today, the looming cost of a college education is a stressful topic for many families—and BMCC, as part of the City University of New York (CUNY), offers a solution to that dilemma. We provide a high-quality, competitive and remarkably affordable college education. That affordability is assured by the CUNY Safety Net, which includes low tuition, as well as access to an abundance of federal and state aid. Not only that, as a BMCC student, you’ll sustain fewer education loans than other college students in New York and across the country. You’ll graduate with job-ready skills and respected academic credentials, well prepared to begin your career or pursue further degrees. Numbers speak louder than words As a degree-seeking BMCC student and NYC resident, you’ll pay just $1,950 at this time, for tuition and fees—while your peers attending
We want you to gain knowledge and degrees, not debt and uncertainty. private colleges will lay out a staggering $15,500 to $25,000 a semester. In a recent year, over 21,000 BMCC students received more than $102 million in assistance from at least one federal, state or municipal financial aid program, and BMCC provided scholarships for close to $700,000—more awarded than by any other CUNY college. We also disbursed almost $70 million in Pell grants in a recent year, and BMCC ranks in the top 20 colleges—out of 5,000 schools, nationwide—in Pell grant disbursement.
Degrees that set careers in motion Many BMCC graduates are on track to transfer into designated bachelor’s degree programs at CUNY and other 4-year colleges. These include our Criminal Justice, Biotechnology, Forensic Accounting, Health Information Technology, Communication Studies, Bilingual Education, and Mathematics and Science for Secondary Education majors. Stuff every student should know Education. Get through college with a few good tips.
Take notes “Pay attention to anything that’s written on the board. The teacher is not going to put something on the board that doesn’t matter. It’s also important to write down any questions that might come up in a discussion. It could be something you will think about when you’re read-

The almighty all-nighter

the bathroom all the time, you will not fall asleep. I also find it helpful to break the time down. It can be terrifying to think about writing 12 pages in six hours. You should just think about working 45 minutes straight and then write a page and a half in that time. If you break it down into smaller chunks you’ll feel like it’s more manageable.”
“It’s tempting to think that you can drink six Red Bulls and then write your paper, but that will probably just give you a heart attack. Keep a monitor on your caffeine and drink water instead. It helps you stay awake better, because you’re hydrated — plus, when you have to go to
ing. Write down all dates and formulas. These things are easy to forget, so put them on paper so you have a record of it.”
There’s so much to figure out when you’re in college. We talk to Blair Thornburgh, author of “Stuff Every College Student Should Know,” out March 25, about her best tips for surviving college without spending all your money on textbooks, how to pull an all-nighter and more.
will make it easier. If it’s really bad, you should get help from your residential staff, because that’s why these people are here.”
Getting along
In an interview
“So much of college is social, and a lot of people need to get away from that sometimes. And if you don’t feel like you can go to your room, it’s going to be very stressful. It’s a good idea not to assume that you’re going to be your roommates’ best friend. A lot of people think that because you really want to make friends. Even if you live with someone who was your friend before, you might not get along. It’s really important to talk, so you don’t build up a weird resentment; then you’re more likely to explode. Plan out what you want to say before you bring up an issue — that
“The most important tip is to be courteous and on time [when you’re interviewing.] Recognize [that] a person’s chief job is not normally interviewing people; they have other things to do. So be prepared and make their job easier. Don’t do anything that’s going to make you uneasy. Dress properly and don’t be rude. I wouldn’t come in with a cup of coffee or with my earbuds in. Show that you’re focused on doing this interview. It’s always good to have a couple of questions to ask the interviewer to show that you know what they do and you want to know more about it.”
Funding. You may not think it’s possible to find financial aid, but a little research might reveal unexpected options It can take a bit of digging to find scholarships or grants you’re eligible for, but it’s a small price to pay for the chance to score some free cash. Here’s our guide to not paying full price for that degree.
Scholarships, grants and aid Scholarships, financial aid and grants are three of the most common applicationbased sources of funding available to students. Although all three are monetary awards given to students to help cover education-related expenses, they are disbursed according to different criteria. Scholarships are generally based on merit, financial aid is usually need-
based and grants are most often awarded for a specific project or program. How to apply: Talk to your school’s administrative office to find out what awards may be available to you. After you’ve checked with your school, do research online to find out about awards offered by the government, foundations and corporations. Many schools also host an information session at the beginning of the school year to tell students about financial aid offered available. Equip yourself with a pen and notepad and get there early — those seats fill up fast.
study programs to students who want a chance to gain hands-on work experience before they graduate. How to apply: Start by checking with the financial aid department to make sure you’re eligible for the program and follow their lead. Remember, your workstudy experience is a great opportunity to position yourself for future employment in a given office or department. It’s a chance to show off your skills and build a professional network on campus. Be sure to work hard and make your interest known.
Work-study
Internships or apprenticeships
Many schools offer work-

study position, consider applying for an internship or apprenticeship in your chosen field. Though these positions don’t often pay well, the work experience and connections you make are often vital to your career. How to apply: Look for companies or organizations in your area that are connected to your program of study. Contact the manager or human resources department to express your interest in the work they do and ask if they have any need for an extra set of hands in the coming months. Money saver “Don’t buy the books new from the campus bookstore — they’re just going to rip you off. The books can be pretty easy to find online if you have the ISBN. Make sure you look around also on foreign sites. Then you can also sell the books when you’re done with them. If it’s a big textbook you’re doing for a huge class and you have a study group, you can split the book. Things about Nikki Sixx’s wedding photo

THE WORD Dorothy Robinson takes on the world of gossip.

DOROTHY ROBINSON @dorothyatmetro dorothy.robinson@metro.us

Surprise! Guthrie is married — and pregnant “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie got married this weekend — and broke the news that she is also four months pregnant. She and her new husband Michael Feldman announced the big news to guests at their Arizona wedding on Saturday, but asked their friends and family to keep the news quiet. When Guthrie was back at work on Monday morning (not much of a honeymoon, is it?), “Today” played a clip of their wedding — and the happy pregnancy news. “We are four months pregnant,” Guthrie announced to excited guests in the clip, all of whom erupted to their feet in applause. Back on air, Guthrie shared her happiness with viewers. “I’m so happy to tell the world, because I can’t suck in this gut anymore.”
There are very few weddings in which the groom’s attire upstages the bride’s, but Saturday’s nuptials between Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx and model Courtney Bingham is an exception to the rule. While Bingham, 28, wore a custom-made gown from her aunt’s California bridal boutique, Sixx sported a dagger necklace and a black bandana. It was, as they say, “a lot of look.” “Just threw my wedding suit on topped with a ton of chrome hearts jewelry & custom leather chucks W/ an old Keith Richards scarf #I’mReady,” he tweeted on Saturday. Readers, I can’t stop staring at him. So many things to address about his wedding photo. Let’s look together, shall we?
1
His hair. So very many questions. Can that
really be his hair? Really? Remember: Sixx is 55. It’s not like most men approaching 60 can rock hair like that. What kind of product do you think he uses? Did he or Bingham spend longer on their wedding ’do? Does he wear the bandana to cover up a receding hairline? Speaking of his best accessory, I love that Sixx is such a romantic as to rock a bandana with a skull and hearts.
2
His other hair. Look very, very closely. Is his goatee lopsided? I want to straighten it out like a crooked painting on the wall. A crooked painting made out of pube-like fabric.
3
His dagger necklace. “Something old, something new, something borrowed and something you can cut your filet mignon with at the reception.”

Statham needs ‘tough love’ Jason Statham better be careful, as girlfriend Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has reportedly been getting some frank advice from fellow Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr about the state of their relationship, according to Radar Online. “Rosie and Jason have had many ups and downs in their relationship, but the supermodel has begun to lay down the law that if Jason doesn’t start getting serious about getting married, she will leave him. But the ultimatum idea didn’t come from Rosie herself but her close pal and mentor Miranda,” a source says. “After Rosie and Jason have spent four years together, Miranda would like to see her get married. She only

wants the best for her friend, so she’s urging her to give Jason some tough love.” And apparently Kerr is more than happy to take credit for what happens next: “Miranda has been bragging to other friends in recent weeks that she is
steering Rosie in the right direction by advising her to leave Jason if he doesn’t propose before the summer,” the source adds.

The comedy “Better Living Through Chemistry” finds Sam Rockwell going off the rails as a mildmannered, henpecked pharmacist who starts getting high on his own supply and getting out of his shell after an encounter with a boozy rich trophy wife (Olivia Wilde). But don’t worry: Rockwell was well-prepared. There’s a particular tone to this kind of comedy. Yeah, it is a pretty particular demographic, isn’t it? I was joking that it was the same arc as “Captain America.” He uses chemicals to become a superhero, and it’s not dissimilar to that — emotionally, anyway. [Laughs] It’s an 80-pound weakling who becomes a strongman, or “Jekyll and Hyde.” You know, I describe the movie as “American Beauty” meets “The Nutty Professor.” You have some very elaborate, if comical, sex scenes with both Olivia Wilde and Michelle Monaghan. Comical is the word, because they’re not, like,
sensual. They’re pretty funny. We were laughing the whole time. It was very silly stuff. You also get quite a range to play with your character as he comes out of his shell. The trickiest part was the beginning, before he takes the drugs. I think that was actually the trickiest to capture, the more introverted version of the guy. I had a few references for that, and the one that comes to mind the most is probably Donald Sutherland in “Ordinary People.” And then I did actually watch both the Jerry Lewis and the Eddie Murphy “Nutty Professor” films, and that was actually very helpful, too. Really? Yeah. I think for the drug stuff I was watching a lot of episodes of “Intervention,” and I think I took a peek at the movie “Dead Ringers” with Jeremy Irons. I might have even watched “Half Nelson” again just to get a little reference. But I really was watching a lot of “Intervention.” You know

Is it normal for you to put that much preparation into a role? Yeah, pretty much. It depends on the part. You don’t always have to do that much research. STARS IN STRYPES
All the young dudes: The Strypes are, from left, Josh McClorey, Ross Farrelly, Evan Walsh and Pete O’Hanlon.
Smells like teen spirit. One of the biggest buzzes coming out of SXSW came from a group whose oldest member is 18. In the 1998 Kurt Russell flick, “Soldier, a group of infants are selected at birth and raised as soldiers. That just may be what’s going on with The Strypes, but instead of using every resource to educate the children in the school of warfare, somebody drilled it into these Irish kids to play the blues. Although the above scenario sounds like one with dystopian consequences, these teenagers cook. They sound like some of the best bands of the 1960s British Invasion, music that one wouldn’t normally think teenagers would have interest in, let alone be able to master. “I suppose we’re all from musical households and our parents all play, so we all had a natural inclination toward music growing up, says 17-year-old drummer Evan Walsh, who is the most outspoken member of the group when we

It’s packed with a dozen stylized and adrenalized tracks, but they’re arguably best experienced live, where 18-year-old guitarist Josh McClorey can let the leads really rip. The band carry themselves with swagger and dress like mods, in sharp blazers ornamented with buttons of their favorite bands on the lapels. Ask Walsh about his Dr. Feelgood button, and it gets the whole band on a roll about the merits of this 1970s pub rock band that most teenagers probably don’t even know about. “Initially we got into these bands through the early Rolling Stones, and

So we got into those bands first and that led us back to people like Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters. But the band members’ taste isn’t limited to blues. McClorey rattles off a list
of acts he had taken in and planned to take in at SXSW, and they include Damon Albarn, Kanye West, Jay Z and Snoop Dogg. “The blues was always around us, growing up, says Walsh, “but so was a lot of the new wave and punk stuff too, like Johnny Thunders and The Clash. PAT HEALY @metrousmusic

‘Chasing Maria Menounos’ gives fans an ‘Extra’ look TV. The host’s new reality show premieres tonight.
“Chasing Maria Menounos premieres tonight at 10 on Oxygen. / GETTY IMAGES
“Chasing Maria Menounos goes inside the mind and heart of the “Extra host as she attempts to balance her career with family life. The show will chronicle Menounos’ experiences with her boyfriend of 15 years, Keven Undergaro, and traditional Greek immigrant parents, Costas and Litsa, who want her to get married and have children. As she turns 35, her parents’ desire for Menounos to settle down is stronger than ever. Though she respects her family and boyfriend’s opinions, she contemplates whether she can support her parents and the friends who depend on her while building a family with Keven and
still having some fun. “It’s really tough because I feel like more than ever women are in the same kind of boat as me, Menounos says. “We really don’t know when the right time is and we’re really excited by our careers. We want to prolong it more than ever. The show also offers a glimpse into the less glamorous aspects of stardom. Menounos notes that one night she may be dressed up for the Oscars, and the next night she’ll be at Chili’s with her family. “There’s the me that works in this business, and then there’s the real me that is outside of that, Menounos says. “I enjoy the perks of all of this, but there’s a reality to it, too. Menounos is also excited to show viewers her Greek family. “I think it’s nice to see a traditional Greek family

I don’t think you see that very often. Menounos’ boyfriend Keven, who will venture into the spotlight for the first time on the show, also says that viewers will enjoy the peek into their life. “I think seeing our family, it’s aspirational, Undergaro says. “I think a lot of people dream to do better in life. It’s nice to know that you can get there and have better things, but that you can still all be close and you still have the same problems that you had when you were a family back in the neighborhood. For Menounos, home is a place to relax and get away from her hectic life. “I love being at home with Keven and the dogs and my parents, she says. “And I love cooking. I love watching movies. I love going to the beach. She’s just a regular girl — with an “Extra-ordinary life. MAX PRINZ @metronewyork letters@metro.us

BOOKS
‘You Should Have Known’ will change the way you think Books. “Admission” author Jean Hanff Korelitz has a new book about the moments when we should have been paying a little more attention.
Most people pride themselves on knowing when someone is lying. When we hear about former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s outrageous illicit affairs or Bernie Madoff’s massive Ponzi scheme, we look at their smart and stylish wives and think, “She must have known, right? How could she not have?” This “should have known” belief is the idea behind Jean Hanff Korelitz’s latest novel. The book’s protagonist is Grace, a therapist living the life she’s always wanted. Married to a sympathetic pediatric oncologist, she has an intelligent and respectful son and has just written a highly anticipated self-help book cautioning women to hear what men are telling them at the very beginning of a relationship. But when Grace’s husband goes
missing and she finds herself in the middle of a media frenzy, she’s left wondering how she could have missed her own advice. According to Korelitz, you’d be surprised how many smart women have their own “should have known” moment. “The British publisher asked everyone who worked at the publishing company to submit their ‘should have known’ moments, and I got to pick the winner. These women are very, very smart. They’re working for this great publisher, yet they all seem to have some story where you wanted to look at them and think, ‘Really? Really?’” The winner of the aforementioned contest was a woman who went on a first date with a guy who told her that he saw sexuality as free-flowing

and not something you can put in a box. “She dated him for years and, of course, he turned out to be gay,” Korelitz muses. Like Korelitz’s other novels — among them

It’s an overwhelming comparative, almost, to look at these women and basically take them apart and strip them down and see what’s left.” At the end of this novel, the principal character is a much different woman than the one you meet at the beginning of the book. You might also be changed after finishing “You Should Have Known” — a little more discerning, a little more aware and a little less critical of those wives the camera pans to during the next high-profile press conference. Taking a shine to southern Portugal

Getting there

Destinations. Long known among Europeans as a year-round holiday locale, the Algarve is finally getting the attention it deserves from the rest of us.
The Algarve is easily accessible from Lisbon airport. From there, you can take the major highways or enjoy a backroad amble along the coast. If you want to sample the city before relaxing on the coast, Martinhal offers an eight-day package beginning at the Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon and ending in the Algarve. For rates and information, email res@martinhal.com.
Martinhal’s guests enjoy fresh fish pulled daily from the bay.
During the Age of Discovery, a small but mighty Portugal sent out ships to explore Africa, Asia and what was then called the New World (that’s us!). Now it’s time for us to return the favor. Although burdened by the recent economic problems, Portugal hasn’t wavered as a destination for savvy European travelers seeking sun, fresh seafood and a knockout coastline — one of few in the world from which you can see the sun rise and set over the ocean. Lately, the Algarve region on the southern coast is coming into its own. Bordered by miles of protected beaches, the Algarve maintains balmy temperatures year-round — sometimes reaching the 70s in the winter — and averages 300 days of sun annually. Until recently, the Algarve was known mostly to hippie caravaners chasing surf conditions along the coast. And you’ll still find plenty of them there. But you’ll also start to see more families seeking an affordable and unique holiday. And don’t worry — you won’t have to sleep on the beach. Anchoring new development in the Algarve is Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel (www.martinhal.com), an

award-winning seaside resort known as much for its sophisticated design as for its family-friendliness. After opening in 2010, Martinhal soon stood out as an affordable luxury destination that still retains hyper-regional charm. In designing the resort, owner Chitra Stern and her husband made it a priority to sustain the natural integrity of the Algarve. “It’s our responsibility to our chil-
dren to do that,” she tells us. Martinhal’s architecture is carefully integrated into the natural landscape, and its restaurants serve only local wine and fish pulled from the bay below. Stern calls it “the freshest fish in the world.” Moreover, Martinhal is one of those rare places where children and adults can enjoy themselves both together and on their own. After having her own children, Stern realized that few vacations truly accommodate every member of the family, so she designed programs at Martinhal that keep kids (from babies to teens) engaged while parents do their own thing. “We try to create moments for everyone in the family,” says Stern. With Martinhal as a base, you can explore the Algarve on trail bikes with a guided tour through small villages and across coastal cliffs. Wind-surfing and scuba-diving lessons are available right in Martinhal’s bay. REBECCA FINKEL @metronewyork letters@metro.us

From screen time to stage time Interview. What do you do after you conquer Facebook, book publishing and parenthood? If you are Randi Zuckerberg, you head to Broadway.
30
Since Randi Zuckerberg left Facebook in 2011, she’s started the media empire Dot Complicated, released a book by that name and, oh yeah, had a baby. Now she’s expanding her philosophy of untangling our wired lives by releasing the children’s book “Dot.” She’s also gearing up for her big Broadway debut in “Rock of Ages.” We catch up with her to talk parenting and managing screen time. What made you want to write a children’s book? I have a son who is almost 3, and everywhere I went — whether it was speaking at a professional business conference or at my son’s preschool — all the parents were talking about screen time. Parents want to make sure their kids are getting enough screen time to be competitive with other kids, but they didn’t want them to have too much. I thought, “Here I am writing a book about how tech has made our lives both so wonderful and complicated for adults, but it really starts much younger.” That’s so true. Even 2-yearolds will try and swipe something like it’s an iPhone. Absolutely! Kids absorb things so easily starting very young. As parents, we can make all these rules until we’re blue in the face,
but I thought if there was a techie young child other kids could relate to going through fun adventures, maybe it would stick. And even though I have a son, I chose to make the main character a girl because I think we could really use more techie girl characters in pop culture, especially for young children. How can parents strike the right balance with screen time? There are a lot of really excellent apps out there that encourage creativity, love for music, love for reading and love for art. They can use tech in ways we could never imagine when we were young, and I think that’s really positive in children’s lives. Where
I start to get [worried] is when tech just replaces the television and becomes a passive medium. You mean sticking a child in front of an iPad to watch a video? Right. But I also live in the real world and understand that it happens sometimes. I’ve had a night where it was just a really long day and I just wanted to have a conversation with my husband, so I gave my son a movie to watch on my iPad. As parents, we already beat ourselves up too much, and tech is an area where you can really cut yourself some slack. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence emily.laurence@metro.us

“If you were to ask me when I was in elementary school what my dream in life was, I would have said that it was my dream to sing on Broadway. … Your dreams come back
to find you sometimes,” says Zuckerberg about her unlikely new role on Broadway’s “Rock of Ages” (she is cast as Regina, a community leader). Zuckerberg says the show’s producers approached her after she gave a talk at TEDxBroad-
way about how Broadway could embrace digital media. “[The producers] thought it would be cool to celebrate their fans using digital and social media. They looked up my TED talk and decided they wanted to invite me to be a part of the show.”

The facts. What you need to know about special needs kids. Raising a child with special needs can feel like a lonely road for parents, but they have plenty of company. The April issue of Parents magazine published the results of an extensive survey of families with specialneeds children as part of a 20-page report, “Life in a Special-Needs World.” The data shows that nearly one in six kids in the U.S. has special needs. The guide aims to answer some of the most frequently asked questions by parents and give them a little peace of mind. Having a conversation with your child about how he or she is different from other kids is a difficult but
necessary task; 73 percent of the parents surveyed have talked with their child about it. But differences aside, 89 percent of parents with special-needs children feel like their child has a good group of friends, an even higher number than the 79 percent of parents of children without special needs. Most (76 percent) also feel that their child’s school is doing an adequate job of addressing his or her needs. These are just a few of the findings, pulled from 500 moms who have children between the ages of 3 and 12. To read the full survey, check out the April issue of Parents magazine, out now. Re: ‘The people, not Reagan, broke up USSR’ (Metro, March 17) Letter writer Timothy Laren is mistaken in his assertion that Reagan had nothing to do with the breakup of the USSR. As examples, I give you Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1969. The people revolted but were crushed. Reagan increased the U.S. military budget and the oppressed people felt they had a friend in Reagan, and as such were more willing to speak truth to power. This is why people under communist domination were more willing to speak out for freedom — unlike
Ukraine never used WMDs against its own people. Further, it got rid of its WMDs in exchange for a now-broken promise from Russia never to invade. As to his other comments, Reagan ended the policy of appeasing the Soviets and his policies led to their economic weakness. He fully supported the oppressed (“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”). Ellsbury to miss Sox game It’s just spring training, but it looks like Red Sox fans visiting Tampa Bay won’t get a chance to boo Jacoby Ellsbury in the first Yankees-Red Sox game this year. Ellsbury is dealing with a tight right calf suffered over the weekend. Manager Joe Girardi didn’t rule Ellsbury out entirely, but said “my guess would be no” when asked if he’d play Tuesday.

Rutgers fans have embraced social media as a way to draw top recruits to their school as they enter the cutthroat Big Ten next season. / GETTY IMAGES
NCAA. Rutgers fans have started a hashtag to influence recruits — taking one step into a murky realm. Rutgers football can’t compete against the likes of Penn State and Ohio State in terms of prestige, but on Twitter, Scarlet Knights fans are trying to be one step ahead. Jay Poole, a Rutgers graduate who majored in economics, is trying to help the football team by winning on social media. With nearly every recruit on Twitter these days, Poole saw other programs — especially ones in Rutgers’ future home in the Big Ten Conference — were working hard to push their school to possible players. Messages and tweets were sent from other college fanbases “showing love” as these prized teenage athletes call it. So Poole and other fans got fed up and created #CHOPNation. “The movement started in the wake of some of the more-recent recruiting struggles Rutgers has had.
We had just recently lost a 2015 recruit to Penn State after a tumultuous offseason that included plenty of decommits for the 2014 class,” Poole said. “There was a lot of self-reflection happening on the online Rutgers message board at Rivals.com. During that period of self-reflection there was a discussion over Twitter and whether or not we as fans had properly utilized it. In my mind, we never did utilize it to its full potential as there were only a few of us on Twitter, and those few of us
Quoted
“There is very little concern over recruiting violations from a fan’s perspective. This use of Twitter is so prevalent that the NCAA apparently doesn’t want to open [a] Pandora’s Box with it.” Jay Poole, on the NCAA policing fans trying to influence recruits via Twitter
were terribly disorganized. Schools much smaller than ours, such as Appalachian State, had organization on Twitter that allowed them to contact recruits quickly and effectively, something we were incapable of. So
I came up with the idea of using the hashtag of #CHOPNation and then asked for all of our fans’ Twitter handles.” There are now roughly 100 Twitter followers actively using the hashtag,
Pushing the rules Twitter and Facebook interaction with recruits is an area with very little NCAA monitoring as of yet. The rule only outlines “correspondence and telephone calls,” which only vaguely relate to social media. The official NCAA rule book reads as follows: •
General Rule. All in-person, on- and off-campus recruiting contacts with a prospective studentathlete or the prospective student-athlete’s relatives or legal guardians shall be made only by autho-
rized institutional staff members. Such contact, as well as correspondence and telephone calls, by representatives of an institution’s athletics interests is prohibited except as otherwise permitted in this section. Violations of this bylaw involving individuals other than a representative of an institution’s athletics interests shall be considered institutional violations per Constitution 2.8.1; however, such violations shall not affect the prospective studentathlete’s eligibility.

with more being added each week. They tweet encouragement at the players and let them know the fanbase wants to see them on campus next year. The tag is born of the team’s “Keep chopping” slogan. It has caught on with those hoping to get offers. On the Friday before his unofficial visit to Rutgers in early March, recruit Alex Toplyn tweeted “Looking forward to my Rutgers visit tomorrow! #CHOPNation.” It is a new world, one the NCAA is still coming to grips with. Fans of major programs are just a tweet or a Facebook invite away from having access to players and attempting to lure them to their alma mater. It makes for a plethora of issues the NCAA has to work through. “A fan can follow and reply to a current studentathlete on Twitter, and can tweet generally about a current student-athlete or team,” said Emily James, associate director of Public and Media Relations for the NCAA. “However, fans [and] boosters cannot tweet about a prospective student-athlete.” KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer sports@metro.us

sion to leave the team in free agency this offseason. On Monday, he was more willing to adapt to Jackson’s future. “I’m willing to do whatever,” Anthony said. “As long as it’s gonna put me in a position to win, I’m willing to do whatever.” Anthony said the hiring of Jackson makes the Knicks more attractive to free agents — though the team won’t have much in the way of cap space until 2015. “For the big picture, this is definitely more attractive,” Anthony said. Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge, Kyrie Irving and Roy Hibbert are among the stars who are free agents in 2015. MARK OSBORNE @MetroNYSports

Garnett to remain out rest of week The Nets have ruled out Kevin Garnett for the rest of the week, saying they will re-evaluate him on Saturday. Garnett hasn’t played since Feb. 27 against Denver due to back spasms. Monday night’s game against the Suns was the ninth straight game he’s sat out. The Nets play the Bobcats on Wednesday and Celtics on Friday, both at home. The team is 6-2 in the eight games he had missed going into Monday’s contest with Phoenix. METRO

Source: Jets management refuses to budge on high salary demands Despite being linked to multiple major names in free agency this offseason, the Jets haven’t whiffed on as many potential targets as one might think, a team executive tells us. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the team executive reveals to us that while the Jets have engaged in talks with a number of high-profile free agent targets, they “refuse to budge from
their salary cap disciplines. The source said the Jets evaluate a player on the field and will assign a salary range they are comfortable with for negotiations. “[We] will stick to that number, even if it means letting the player walk, the executive said. “It doesn’t mean that we missed on all our targets. We didn’t. It just means that the targets didn’t make sense with what [general manager] John [Idzik] wants to do, and that is build depth and competition on both sides of the ball — not just a few stars. Rodgers-Cromartie inks deal to join up with Giants NFL. The corner chose the Giants over the Jets. The New York football rivalry met at the bargaining table and the Giants got their man. Both local teams expressed interest in signing free agent cornerback Dominique RodgersCromartie, but it was the Giants who signed the veteran Monday. “I haven’t really found anywhere to just call
home for real, said Rodgers-Cromartie, who has played for three teams in his six NFL seasons. “So if I can just settle down and find a place to be home, I know my best football is ahead of me. He played for the AFC champion Broncos last season. He’s had at least three interceptions in five of his six seasons, including three last year. He also has already played with safety Antrel Rolle in Arizona. The captain pushed for the Giants to sign him on Twitter Monday afternoon. METRO

KEVIN A. STEVENS, P.C. Attorney for Plaintiff 98 Lafayette Avenue Suffern, NY 10901 845-357-9144
KS # 12338 Index No. COMPLAINT
Plaintiff, by its attorney Kevin A. Stevens, PC, complaining of defendant(s) hereby alleges and states as follows: 1. This action is brought pursuant to N.Y. Real Property Actions and Proceedings Law Article 15 to compel the determination of claims to real property described in this complaint. 2. Plaintiff is a New York Religious Corporation duly organized and existing, with a principal place of business in the State of New York, County of BRONX. 3. Upon information and belief, defendant is or was a partnership organized under the laws of, and headquartered in, the State of New Jersey. Defendant is referred to as a New Jersey Partnership by deed dated May 17th, 1990, recorded June 15th, 1990, in Reel 990, Page 93. (See discussion in paragraph 7 below) 4. That the transactions complained of, to the extent not otherwise specified, all occurred within the State of New York, County of BRONX. 5. Plaintiff at all relevant times was and now is owner in fee simple of the following described property, located and situated in the City of New York, County of Bronx, and State of New York: Parcel “B” of land designated on the Tax Map of the City of New York, for the Borough of the Bronx, as Lots 7 in Block 5537 of Section 18, as said Map was on the 4th day of February, 1952; said property being known and designated as 2738 Bruckner Blvd., Bronx, NY and conveyed by deed dated May 17th 1990, and recorded June 15th, 1990. (See Deed attached as Exhibit “A”) Prior to plaintiffs ownership of this lot, the same was owned by plaintiff’s denominational parent. 6. Plaintiff also has at all relevant times owned and possessed of a House of Worship (“House of Worship Parcel”) in fee simple on lots 1 and 3 in Block 5537 of Section 18, as said Map was on the 4th day of February, 1952; said property being known and designated as 2726 and 2730 Bruckner Blvd., Bronx, New York, conveyed from New York District of The Assemblies of Gob by deed dated April 4th, 2000, recorded March 16, 2001 in Reel at Page 1542. (See Deed attached as Exhibit “B”) 7. Defendant previously obtained record title to the following described property, located and situated in the City of New York, County of Bronx, and State of New York: Parcel “A” of land designated on the Tax Map of the City of New York, for the Borough of the Bronx, as Lot 7 in Block 5537 of Section 18, as said Map was on the 4th day of February, 1952; said property being known and designated as 2738 Bruckner Blvd., Bronx, NY and conveyed by deed dated July 13th, 1983, and recorded March 7th, 1988 (herein after the “Premises”). (See Title Report and Deed attached as Exhibit “C”) 8. Plaintiff has acquired title to the above referenced Premises by virtue of adverse possession pursuant to RPAPL sections 501 & 512. 9. Plaintiff has used and occupied the Premises openly, notoriously, continuously, and exclusively, for a period of time extending well beyond the ten (10) year statutory requirement set forth in CPLR Section 212. 10. For over twenty (20) years the Premises has been used as egress in case of a fire or other emergency access for the rear portion of the building on parcel “B”, granting access to Bruckner Blvd. 11.Since 1998 the church has maintained a storage shed on the Premises for the storage of equipment associated with maintenance and landscaping. 12. For over ten (10) years the Premises has been used for regular church construction projects and clean up. Commercial dumpsters were placed on the Premises for project cleanups each time. 13. In 2003 the Premises was used for heavy equipment storage when the church was going through renovations. 14. Since 2006 the Premises has been used as an access point for wireless antenna heavy machinery to work on cell towers. 15. Since 2010 the Premises has been used as a children’s play area during Sunday worship programs. 16. Plaintiffs occupation of the Premises has been under a claim of right. As stated and shown above, Plaintiff’s occupation has been continuous, exclusive and adverse to any other rights and claims, including that of defendant. Defendant has not set foot on the Premises at all, nor contacted plaintiff in regard to the plaintiffs occupation at all. Defendant has made no use of the Premises whatsoever, including one abandoned billboard located on parcel “A”, for years. Defendant has abandoned the Premises and has not occupied, possessed or used the Premises for in excess of ten years, during which Plaintiff has openly and notoriously occupied the Premises. 17. By virtue of the filed deed (Exhibit “C”), defendants claim or may claim to have, or it appears by the public records that they may claim, some estate or interest in the above-described Premises, which belongs to plaintiff, and of which a description is given in paragraph 7 above or that the defendants claim or my claim to have, or it appears by the public records that they may claim some estate or interest in a part of the real property, the exact nature, extent, and quality of which claims, except as here specified, are unknown to plaintiff 18. Plaintiff alleges that all claims of defendant to the Premises are invalid and have been abandoned, and are of no force or effect and that all such claims have been wholly and effectually extinguished, cutoff, and barred by the acts and occurrences of a continuing nature that have continued for a period exceeding that required by statute for the vesting of title through the medium of adverse possession, and that plaintiff has seized and possessed of the Premises free of, and wholly discharged from, any and every claim, demand, or encumbrance on behalf of defendant. 19. All the defendants are known, and none are infants, mentally retarded, mentally ill, or alcohol or drug abusers. 20. Any judgment granted herein will not affect any person or persons not in being or ascertained at the commencement of this action, who by any contingency contained in a devise or grant or otherwise, could afterward become entitled to a beneficial estate or interest in the aforesaid Premises. In addition, every person in being who would have been entitled to such estate or interest, if such event had happened immediately before the commencement of the action is named as a party to this action. WHEREFORE, plaintiff demands judgment as follows: A) that it be adjudged and finally determined that plaintiff is the lawful owner and are vested with an absolute and unencumbered title in fee to the Premises described in this complaint in paragraph 7 (and in Exhibit “C”); B) that the sole and complete possession of the Premises described in paragraph 7 of this complaint be awarded to the plaintiff, and that the plaintiff remains in possession of the Premises; C) that defendants and all persons claiming under them or under any of them be forever barred from all claim to an estate or interest in the Premises described in paragraph 7; D) that plaintiff recover costs, disbursements, and allowances against any and all defendants answering this action; E) that plaintiff have such other and further relief as to the Court may deem just, equitable, and proper.
