leader who “seemed to watch over everyone.” “He led by example in all aspects of his life,” she said in her eulogy. “His actions encouraged others to do well.” The casket carrying Walsh, a 43-year-old married father of three from West Roxbury, was brought to St. Patrick’s Church atop Engine 33, the fire truck he worked on and rode in last week when he responded to a fire in the Back Bay that eventually took his life. Walsh’s brother, Michael, carried his helmet in front of the truck as about 10,000 first responders saluted in a moving tribute. Standing at the front of the formation were Boston firefighters who also responded to last week’s fire that injured 13 of their comrades. One of them

Fire investigators still trying

to determine the cause of last week’s blaze were able to find Walsh’s wedding ring in the charred remains of the Back Bay brownstone on Tuesday. They presented it to his wife during Tuesday’s wake.

Local 718, the Boston firefighters union, said Walsh loved being a firefighter. “He was a born leader who did not regard himself as a hero,” Paris said, adding that Walsh was proudest to be a husband and a father. Walsh’s family was presented with the International Association of Fire Fighters Medal of Honor during the funeral Mass, which concluded after about two hours of remarks, hymns, prayers and a traditional bell ringing ceremony signifying the end of a firefighter’s service. After the service, Walsh’s casket was loaded back onto Engine 33, which took him to a Watertown cemetery for his last ride. “He touched many more than those who were lucky to know him,” said Mayor Walsh. “We need to thank him and his family for this lifetime of service to our community. … Let us be inspired by his example and let each of us try to bring his spirit of service to our own communities.” MICHAEL NAUGHTON @MetroBosMike

Show of support

Firefighters, public pay respects About 10,000 firefighters, EMS workers, police officers and other first responders showed up to pay tribute to Lt. Edward Walsh. They came from across the state and the nation, from the Cape to the Pacific Coast. Capt. Scott Willis, a firefighter from Washington state, said he traveled across the nation to pay his respects at the Watertown service because, “I know they’d do it for us.” Mary Dwyer, whose son is a Boston fire lieutenant, stood outside the church to show her support for Walsh’s family. “You have to show your support to the family because that could be me in there,” she said, pointing to the church.

Bill would give families of fallen men $150K in aid In the line of duty. Legislation would raise the amount given to families of three public safety employees. A bill expected to pass through the Senate today would increase a one-time payment to the families of two Boston firefighters and a Plymouth police officer killed in the line of duty to $150,000. Under state law, families of any public safety employee killed in the line of duty receive $100,000 from the state, but House lawmakers yesterday gave initial approval to a $300,000 supplemental budget, upping the payment by

$50,000. The amount has not increased since 1994, State House News reported. The bill’s advancement came as memorial services were held for the two Boston firefighters killed last week in a blaze on Beacon Street. The family of a Plymouth police officer who died in a

motorcycle accident Tuesday evening would also receive the payment, under the bill. Plymouth Police Officer Gregg Maloney, 43, succumbed to serious injuries after his motorcycle crashed around 2:15 p.m. Maloney, a 17-year veteran officer, was on duty at the time of the accident. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash. “There was no obvious reason for the bike to go down,” Plymouth Police Chief Michael Botieri said at a news conference. “There were no other vehicles involved.” The bill will likely reach the governor’s desk later today, State House News reported.

Benzino nephew, alleged shooter denied bail at hearing The 36-year-old nephew of hip-hop and reality television star Benzino was ordered held without bail during a dangerousness hearing Wednesday, despite his attorneys’ claims that the Randolph resident acted in self-defense. Gai Scott is accused of shooting his uncle, whose real name is Raymond Scott, during a funeral procession Saturday on Route 3 in Duxbury. Benzino, 48, appears in the VH1 series “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta.” The funeral service was for his mother, Mary Scott. According to a police report filed in Plymouth District Court, Scott told investigators his uncle pulled up beside him, rolled down his window, asked, “You got a problem with me?” then threatened to kill him. Scott claimed he fired shots after he saw Benzino pull a gun, the report said. On Monday, he pleaded not guilty to a charge of armed assault with intent to murder. Benzino was armed at the time of the shooting, and that he had attempted to avoid family members due to tensions. Benzino was released Monday from South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, where he was treated for gunshot wounds in his arm and back. About the shooting, Benzino told TheNEHipHop. com, “I’m more embarrassed than anything else.” He has since returned to Atlanta. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for April 25. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

Security. Data breaches on the rise as federal agencies struggle to cope Federal agencies have a spotty record of handling data breaches, which can include the theft of sensitive information like Social Security numbers, financial data and health history, the investigative arm of Congress said in a report issued Wednesday. The number of such incidents involving personal data more than doubled in 2013, to 25,566 from 10,481 in 2009, according to the Government

Incidents have ranged from the highly publicized theft in 2006 of a laptop and external hard drive belonging to the Department of Veterans Affairs that contained personal data on 26.5 million veterans and active duty members of the military, to the hacking of a Federal Aviation Administration computer that contained data on 45,000 agency employees and retirees. Four dead in gunfire at Fort Hood base Another tragedy. In 2009, a former Army psychiatrist shot dead 13 people at the base. A gunman opened fire at Fort Hood on Wednesday, killing multiple people and injuring a dozen or more at the U.S. Army base in central Texas that was the scene of another deadly shooting rampage in 2009, officials said. The shooter, a male soldier, was dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas in an interview with CNN. He said four people, including the gunman, were dead. “There has been a shooting at Fort Hood and injuries are reported. Emergency crews are on the scene. No further details are known at this time,” the base said in a statement. Local news reports initial-

ly said there may have been two suspected shooters. News of the shooting, the third such incident at a military base in the United States in about six months, was relayed to President Barack Obama, the White House said. “We are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened,” Obama told reporters in Chicago, where he is attending fundraisers. “We’re heartbroken that something like this might have happened again.” The base has been put on lockdown and police were securing its perimeter, police and military officials said. Helicopters could be seen circling the base in live TV footage broadcast from the scene. Authorities advised those on the post to stay away from windows and to keep doors closed and locked via an update on Twitter. In September, a gunman

Malaysian police have ruled out the involvement of any passengers in the disappearance of a jetliner, while Australian officials warned bad weather and a lack of reliable information were impeding efforts to find the plane’s wreckage. Up to 10 planes and nine ships from a half dozen countries on Wednesday scoured a stretch of the Indian Ocean roughly the size of Britain, where Flight MH370 is believed to have crashed more than three weeks ago. Authorities have not ruled out mechanical problems as a cause of the disappearance, but say all the evidence suggests the plane was deliberately diverted from its scheduled route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Russia could bring Ukraine incursion in 3-5 days Russia has massed all the forces it needs on Ukraine’s border if it were to decide to make an “incursion” into the country, and it could achieve its objective in three to five days, NATO’s top military commander said on Wednesday. Calling the situation “incredibly concerning,” U.S. Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove said NATO had spotted signs of movement by a very small part of the Russian force overnight but had no indication that this was part of a withdrawal to barracks. NATO military chiefs are concerned that the estimated 40,000 Russian soldiers massed on the Ukrainian border could pose a threat to eastern and southern Ukraine.

While the rest of Westeros continues to bribe, kill and manipulate their way to the Iron Throne, Isaac HempsteadWright’s Bran Stark is inching closer to his destiny. The fourth season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones finds him deep in the North beyond the Wall, searching for answers about his strange new powers. Hempstead-Wright, 14, sat down with us after the show’s NYC premiere to reveal what’s in store for Bran. Where does Bran start out in Season 4? This season is Bran exploring his mystical side even more, because in Season 3 we had definite hints of him starting to understand his powers, especially with the introduction of Jojen Reed [Thomas Brodie-Sangster], who is a mentor to Bran, teaching him what his power is and what he can use it for. And in Season 4, not only is he getting taught more by Jojen, but there is this kind of supernatural force that’s pulling him somewhere. Bran has some powerful abilities: His dreams are prophetic, and he can control

Age is just a state of mind Live tonight. The Young@Heart chorus members embrace their golden years. Even though the Young@Heart chorus began in Northampton, Mass., it was a break in Europe that made them famous. In 1997 they staged a show called “Road to Heaven that went to a festival in Rotterdam. “The first time, they could only get 90 people to see it, says co-founder and musical director Bob Cilman, “but the next night we sold out all 250 seats. We were brought back with that show twice a year to Europe for the next eight years. Then we did a new show called ‘Road to Nowhere,’ and that’s when the British crew saw the show and decided to make a film. The film, “Young@Heart, was originally broadcast on the U.K.’s esteemed Channel 4 in 2007 and went on to win awards at several international

film fests before being picked up by Fox Searchlight. The emotional movie follows the choir on an uplifting, but often painful journey as they gain new fans but lose some members along the way. They perform songs as esoteric as Sonic Youth’s “Schizophrenia while giving new meaning to interpretations of the Ramones’ “I Wanna Be Sedated and David Bowie’s “Golden Years.

“I found there was something so amazing about hearing people from their generation do songs that we grew up with that they didn’t know, says Cilman, now 61. “They interpret them so differently and that became interesting to me and it hasn’t stopped being interesting to me. Today, because of the group’s popularity, there is a minimum age requirement of 73 and the choir’s two oldest members are now 91. They’ve toured Japan and Australia and performed with many rock luminaries, including David Byrne, who is now on their advisory board. And still there isn’t much of a following in America. “We’ve never promoted ourselves, says Cilman. “We’ve never done that and it’s been a pretty nice thing to never have done that. So we go where people are interested in us coming.

“I have a great collection of lingerie, but I wear what’s comfortable” Swanepoel Role play

Should lingerie create a fantasy? Yeah. There are so many different styles that all play a different role: Body by Victoria’s Secret is very relaxed and there’s a sexy line that’s playful with color, garter belts and babydolls. Then there’s the more cutesy stuff with lace and frills.

Which is your favorite style and why? 2013 VICTORIA’S SECRET FASHION SHOW

STYLE

I do tend to stick to the more sultry black lace, garter belts and subtle styles.

In addition to Candice Swanepoel’s career on the catwalk circuit, you’ll recognize her as the girl who wowed the world in the $10 million Fantasy Bra at the Victoria’s Secret show. We caught up with Swanepoel and chatted about feeling sexy — from the inside out. You’ve spent a lot of time being photographed in lingerie. Am I right in thinking that this is how you hang out at home? Um, no. I must admit that I have a great collection of lingerie, but at home I try to find the most comfortable thing to wear. So, Bridget Jones-style granny panties? No, no, no, definitely not. You can find comfy lingerie like boy shorts, briefs — and commando always works! Always nice to be naked. You’re a ballet dancer, so do you like expressing your sexuality through dance? Yeah. Growing up doing ballet makes you a lot more aware of how to move your body. Dance is a big part of the way we communicate with people, the way we feel about ourselves. When you’re out and dancing you’re showing people a part of yourself. You’ve said that blondes have more fun. What do you mean by that? The difference between brunettes and blondes is that you notice a blonde first when she walks into a room. I was more serious as a brunette. It’s easier to have that cute, naughty, playful attitude as a blonde. So going blonde has changed your attitude? I’m used to playing a different role for work. Hair color is like fragrance or lingerie: It brings something different out of you. Head to ModMods.com to read our bonus questions.

You’ve been dating Brazilian model Hermann Nicoli for a few years now. Was it love at first sight? It was kind of love or desire at first sight. I was living between Milan, London and Paris and I met him at a party in Milan very briefly. Then I was in Paris a year

later during men’s fashion week, when I was staying in a little apartment hotel in Paris, and we met in the lobby, and that’s where we hit it off. Did he approach you? We both have different stories, but I kind of approached him,

that’s the funny thing. I had just come out of a relationship that wasn’t working and pretty soon after that I met him … and the rest is history. RICHARD PECKETT richard.peckett@metro.lu

Celeb spotlight. Are Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez totally toxic? First there was Bennifer, then there was Brangelina and today there is Jelena. Justin Bieber, 20, and Selena Gomez, 21, make up one of the world’s most talked-about on-and-off couples (Chris Brown and Rihanna make up the other). But are they simply two lovebirds having a young, flighty romance or is their relationship more dangerous than that? We asked Dr. Sherrie Campbell, psychologist and author or of “Loving Yourself: The Mastery of Being Your Own Person,” about why she thinks their relationship looks like toxic trouble. Is this kind of toxic relationship more common with young people? It happens with all people. This is your typical codependent relationship. I see it daily. There are some people who end up

Black Lips guitarist Cole Alexander wants his band’s shows to stink. Not like he wants the band to perform poorly, but he wants to provide a scented experience for fans. “We want to attack all senses, not just sight and hearing,” Alexander says between bouts of mild road rage. Yes, he’s answering questions while driving. “We wanted to make a memorable performance.” What kinds of aromas? “We have a song called ‘Dumpster Dive,’” he says of the group’s olfactory concept, currently in the works. “I want to have the smell of trash come out during that song. And we have a song called ‘Drugs,’ I want the smell of marijuana and narcotics to permeate the air during the concert.” Alexander says it will be some time yet before showgoers can anticipate such a symphony of scent at a Black Lips show, but he says that they’ve long considered branching out into this realm. With some help from Ramdane Touhami of France’s Cire Trudon, the oldest wax factory in the world and the provider of candles to the French proletariat back in the day, the Black Lips may soon see — er, smell — their own signature scent. “He’s a professional smellman, basically,” says Alexander. “He’s the one who advised us about what to do.” According to Alexander, the people at Cire Trudon worked with NASA on making an approximation of the smell of the moon before putting it into a candle. We were unable to confirm this claim. “It’s a scent,” says Alexander. “I eventually want to get that

A pot of gold? Though the Black Lips’ latest album, “Underneath the Rainbow” — titled as such as an ode to gay leprechauns, Alexander explains — was met with praise when it suddenly appeared available to stream online two weeks before its release date, it was not a move made by the band. “That’s something my label did, and they didn’t even tell me about it,” he says. “I don’t really care for it, personally.”

He says if people just listen to the album and realize they don’t like it enough to buy it, it’s not the same as buying, listening and not liking it. “I remember when I was little I’d buy a CD and if I didn’t like it, it was devastating,” he says. “I’d have to wait like two weeks for the grass to grow and I could mow the lawn and I could get enough for a CD. And if it sucked, it was just devastating. If they don’t like it, I want them to just be devastated.”

scent in our set. But first I’m gonna write a song about the moon.” Developing fragrances is only one new initiative for the Black Lips. A partnership with French clothiers April 77 recently produced a traditionally badass, signature Black Lips denim vest, on sale now and on view in their latest video for “Nightmare Field.” The jean vest features a skull-and-pot-leaf logo that looks like it could belong on any biker’s back, but it fits right in with the band’s rough-andtumble aesthetic. lobbying efforts from the base cost while making life miserable for sick people. They should be restricted to making money off people who can afford to give it away. Sell them those Cadillac policies. Expanding Medicare is one way to go. Maria is right: We need health care, not insurance.

Re: ‘We need care, not insurance’ (Metro, April 2) Maria Termini hit the nail on the head. We need a system where insurance companies don’t siphon off 20 percent of the money we spend on health care — and then have the nerve to complain because it’s not their normal 30 percent. done, your co-pay and deductible will be as much as $600. So people who could not afford insurance before, because it cost too much, will be upset when they find out that if you want to use it, it will cost more in co-pays than your premium every month. KATHY HAROLD, VIA EMAIL

Wow Maria! Spot on! Well written! Take insurance companies out of the equation! So much of our pay goes to insurance premiums for health care that is still unaffordable! It’s robbery!

Letter writer Maria Termini is so correct, the high cost associated with today’s health insurance still makes it unaffordable for most people. I don’t care how low the premium is, should you have a procedure

Pats look at two star QBs The Patriots are not only looking at Johnny Manziel this week as former Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater has also surprisingly drawn interest from the team. ProFootballTalk.com reported Wednesday that the Patriots could be using a meeting with high profile quarterbacks to gauge potential trade value should one of them fall in the draft. The Pats pick No. 29 overall.

DAVID ORTIZ IS TAKING HEAT FOR HIS SELFIE. GETTY IMAGES

Ortiz denies selfie was ‘promotional’ Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has a promotional deal with Samsung, but denied Wednesday that his selfie with President Barack Obama was incentive-laced. “It wasn’t anything promotional, anything like that, Ortiz said. “I mean, who knows that you’re going to take a picture with the president? Ortiz took the photo when he presented Obama with a Red Sox jersey. Samsung took some credit for Ortiz’s social media hit, telling the Boston Globe that it “was an honor to help [Ortiz] capture such an incredible and genuine moment of joy and excitement.

The numbers all back it up: Boston is currently the top team in the NHL. The Bruins went 15-1-1 in March and have a league-best 110 points (one more than St. Louis). Boston also has the best goal-dierential (plus-83) with seven games left in the regular season. No. 2

No. 14

Sharks (48-20-9)

Lightning (45-25-9)

Stars (37-27-11)

The Sharks are only one point behind the Ducks, but Anaheim has two games in hand over their rivals. San Jose hosts Los Angeles on Thursday.

The Lightning are playing great again, having gone 7-1-2 in their last 10 games. They’ll likely be the No. 3 seed, but No. 4 wouldn’t be a bad consolation prize.

The race for the No. 8 seed in the West is a great one between the Stars and Coyotes. Dallas has won its last three games, including a 5-0 whitewashing of the Caps.

Canadiens (43-27-7)

Coyotes (36-27-13)

Matt Duchene (knee) is out at least for the ďŹ rst round of the playos for Colorado, which is terrible news for a team making its ďŹ rst playo appearance since 2010.

The Canadiens only have ďŹ ve games left but are in good shape for home ice in the ďŹ rst round. Big weekend for the Habs with Ottawa and Detroit on the slate.

No matter who misses the playos in the West, either the Stars or Coyotes, they will represent one of the better teams to miss the postseason in NHL history.

Penguins (48-23-5)

Rangers (43-30-4)

Red Wings (35-26-14)

The Pens are not going to get the No. 1 seed and they’re trending in the wrong direction. The good news is that they likely wouldn’t see Boston until the East ďŹ nals.

The Rangers have very quietly been playing wonderful hockey to vault ahead of Philly. By virtue of their victory over Vancouver, they’ve earned a franchise record 25 road wins.

Don’t count out the Red Wings just yet. Detroit is playing its best hockey of the season, having gone 6-3-1 in their last 10 games. They also have two of their next four against Bualo.

Blues (51-17-7)

Blackhawks (42-19-15)

Flyers (39-27-9)

Jackets (38-30-7)

The Blues aren’t being penalized for playing poorly — they are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games. It’s more about the Bruins being on ďŹ re as of late.

The rigors of a Cup run, plus an Olympic year, mean it is going to be diďŹƒcult for Chicago to recapture the same magic it had last season. Plus Jonathan Toews is still banged up.

If the Flyers can survive a few tough days — hosting Columbus on Thursday and at Boston on Saturday — they get the hopeless Sabres and Panthers after that.

The Blue Jackets are hanging on to the eighth spot in the East by their ďŹ ngernails, just one point in front of Toronto and two points ahead of Washington.

Ducks (49-18-8)

Kings (44-26-6)

Leafs (37-32-8)

Regular season wins don’t get much sweeter than Anaheim’s epic 5-4 overtime comeback victory over Winnipeg on Monday. Anaheim is 6-3-1 in its last 10 games.

Nothing illustrates the depth and quality of the West more than the fact that the Kings will most likely be the No. 6 seed. L.A. is the team no one wants to face this spring.

The Wild have won their last two games, which is nice and all, but they are almost set for the No. 7 seed. They’re 16-17-6 on the road this season. Not a good sign.

No idea how a team that just suered through an eightgame losing streak could move up in the rankings, but what other choice do they have?
