Century-old building burns during wedding ceremony Bridal blaze. The fire destroyed Lakeview Pavilion in Foxborough. A fire that destroyed a Foxborough wedding venue as a ceremony was underway Saturday night was caused by careless disposal of smoking material. The wedding ceremony fire destroyed the century-old Lakeview Pavilion. What was left of the building was being torn down Sunday. Foxborough Deputy Fire Chief Steve Bagley said the
fire likely started in the rear of the building. “What we believe is someone flicked a cigarette into the mulch, and the mulch got going and spread [the fire] to building,” Bagley said. Justice of the Peace Jerry Cibley said he had just pronounced a couple as husband and wife. As the newly married couple and their bridal party walked down the aisle, Cibley said he and the disc jockey noticed smoke. “I literally pronounced them husband and wife and just introduced them. They started playing the recessional, they were walking down

the aisle toward the other end of the hall … all of a sudden the DJ and a few of us looked up and saw smoke,” Cibley
said. “I thought it was coming from a fog machine.” The smoke was actually coming from the walls. The three-alarm fire broke out just after 7 p.m. Bagley said the staff was quickly able to get everyone out of the venue and that there were no injuries. About 110 people were inside at the time of the fire. Between 50 and 75 firefighters from multiple towns responded. Bagley said he ordered everyone out of the building because of the intensity of the blaze. “You could tell the fire and the smoke was traveling extensively,” Bagley said.
“Also there was high winds at the time. There was really no stopping it.” Opened in 1906 as Lake View Park, the facility has hosted countless events from weddings to showers and proms. Cibley said he was disappointed the couple couldn’t celebrate their wedding, but glad that no one was hurt. “I married them legally and everyone got out safe, which is the most important thing,” he said. Fatal confrontation

when one of the officers fired his gun, hitting the man. The man, who was not identified, was taken to Boston Medical Center where he later died. The Boston Police Firearm Discharge Investigation Team and the Suffolk district attorney’s office are investigating. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

The dog parks and greenways will then be selected based on factors such as proximity to local waterways, public accessibility, estimated bag usage and expressed need. DoodyCalls reports there are upwards of 1.7 million pooches currently living in the Bay State. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average dog discards approximately three-quarters of a pound of waste each day. Over the course of one year, that adds up to nearly 275 pounds, most of which goes unscooped. “Typically when we see beaches closed, and the red flags go up, pet waste is often the culprit that causes the bacteria,” Delaney said. “It’s not just that unscooped poop is gross. There is a huge environmental and health concern.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Cyclist killed. Truck driver charged in alleged BARBARA ANTHONY hit-and-run incident The driver of a garbage truck was charged Friday with leaving the scene of a collision that killed a cyclist in Charlestown on Thursday afternoon. Ricky Prezioso, 41, of Swampscott, pleaded not guilty in the death of Chelsea resident Owen McGrory, 30, whom he allegedly struck near the intersection of Cambridge and Spice streets. Witnesses reported that the truck did not stop and the driver did not make himself known, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley. Prezioso told police he thought he struck a pothole and, after checking his truck on Spice Street, then continued on his route, Conley said. A defense lawyer said the cyclist initiated contact. Prezioso was released on $5,000 bail, and is scheduled to return to court May 19.

BEING CAUTIOUS ABOUT BITCOINS I noticed a Bitcoin “ATM” at South Station the other week, but didn’t have time to check it out. What exactly is a Bitcoin? First of all, do not let the names confuse you: A Bitcoin isn’t a coin, and that was not an ATM. Bitcoin is an Internetbased type of property, according to the IRS. People can buy Bitcoins online or use a computer program to make them, and then spend their Bitcoins at some websites and retailers. The problem with Bitcoins is that their value changes often, so you can easily and quickly lose the money that you converted into Bitcoins. Recently, one Bitcoin was valued at more than $800, but as I write this, that value is down to $450. That Bitcoin “ATM” is actually more of a kiosk. You can use the machine to convert physical dollars into Bitcoins with a smartphone.

The problem with Bitcoins is that their value changes often. An ATM allows you to deposit or withdraw cash, but this machine does not do that. Bitcoin might provide an innovative service down the line, but for now I advise consumers to be very cautious as its value is just too unstable. You can learn more about Bitcoin by reading our Consumer Alert at www.mass.gov/consumer. I’m buying a new home and was told I should have a home inspection. What exactly does that entail and where can I find a home inspector? Buying a new home can be a daunting task, but a home inspector’s report should help
relieve some of the stress. An inspection includes a visual examination of the home and its vital systems such as plumbing and wiring, and clarifies what is in good shape and what will need fixing. Most people have inspections done after signing the purchase and sales contract but before finalizing their purchase. Our Division of Professional Licensure has a database of all licensed home inspectors in Massachusetts. You can search this database at www.mass. gov/dpl under Find a Licensed Professional. Here you can find a licensed inspector near you and check on the history and standing of his or her license. For more information, take a look at our Home Inspector Consumer Fact Sheet at www.goo.gl/adNVQb. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

Officially unofficial Letterman replacement suggestions With David Letterman stepping down, various TV oracles indicate that Stephen Colbert is a top pick as a “Late Show” host, but we here at Metro think CBS can get a little more creative with its picks. Here’s who we think should be on the short list.

Chelsea Handler OK, she’s probably already on their short list. She’s officially leaving E!, she’s got a steady following and she’s written some popular books. But CBS, ever the network of safe choices, may think she’s a little too risque for their viewers’ tastes. Be bold, CBS! Letterman wasn’t the safe late night choice, and she’d be a worthy successor.

“BONES” JEFF LIPSKY/FOX
Drama
‘Bones’ TV’s most reliable “it’s on while I’m doing something else” show takes a look at a murder connected to a medical marijuana dispensary. Just make sure you don’t watch it while you’re eating, because there are some gross decaying bodies in every episode. We mock, but we’ll miss it someday when it finally shuffles off the air (in 30 years or so, since Fox keeps renewing it). Maybe that’s when Emily will move over to sister Zooey’s “New Girl.” It’s on the same lot, after all. FOX, 8 P.M.

Thanks to social media, you now have to post equally fabulous vacation photos on Instagram, bake cookies that are nothing short of Pinterest-worthy, and make sure Nike+ is keeping everyone on Facebook aware of your running progress. At least, that’s the premise of the new CBS sitcom “Friends with Better Lives.” “The show examines friendship through that ‘grass is always greener’ lens,” says Dana Klein, creator and executive producer of the show. “I mean, I can barely open my computer without feeling like I failed in a million different ways. Someone’s got the perfect family, the perfect kids, the perfect job, the perfect body. It’s human nature to want what we don’t have.” “I’ve got all those things,” interjects star James Van Der Beek. Dawson’s streak
Still obnoxious, but not as James Van Der Beek The last time we saw James Van Der Beek on TV, he was playing a heightened version of himself on ABC’s “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23.” In “Friends with Better Lives,” he’s still not the most likable person on the block, but at least he’s not known as Dawson again. “The last thing I did I played a completely bizarro human being who happened to share my name and four or five things on my resume,” Van Der Beek says. But his favorite change in his return to television is playing in a new format. “The great thing about this is the live audience aspect,” he says. “I started out in theater, so it’s a lot of fun. I feel like the audience kind of keeps you honest. It’s old school. It’s an oldschool sitcom. You either get a laugh or you don’t.”

‘Rich Girl’ not so rich in content Review. The Lyric Stage play about a Suze Orman-type fails to deliver inspiration.
Given people’s fascination with the rich and famous, the Lyric Stage’s “Rich Girl” could be a delightful romp through the dysfunctional lives of a media megastar and her disappointingly ordinary daughter. Unfortunately, playwright Victoria Stewart’s Suze Ormaninspired tale plays like a mediocre sitcom you watch when you can’t bother looking for
the remote. It’s fine, really, just sort of bland and forgettable. If you’ve seen “The Heiress,” you might think this is a contemporary adaptation of that plot, and it is, but the characters in “Rich Girl” aren’t as interesting. Amelia Broome stars as Eve, a TV financial advice guru whose favorite buzzword is “prenup,” but she lacks the charisma her character’s job requires. She’s also void of the requisite edge to have such a strained relationship with her daughter Claudine (Sasha Castroverde). It doesn’t help that the milquetoast media heavyweight is wearing cheap,

ill-fitting clothes and an even cheaper wig. (Oprah and her ilk would never!) Castroverde’s long purple wig offers hope that her character will be more interesting, but she’s just as dull as her mother, though she does, mercifully, teeter into bitchy and appealing in Act II. Claudine’s love interest, Henry (Joe Short), makes you
wonder what the fuss is about. In an era where media stars like the Kardashians, Taylor Swift and Rihanna can all find real bad boys, Stewart could’ve come up with a more menacing guy to threaten Eve’s financial empire. This guy is as pesky as a gnat at a picnic, and those can be taken care of pretty easily. Eve’s long-faithful assis-
tant Maggie (Celeste Oliva) has more energy than all the others. Oliva single-handedly keeps the production moving, but like any bright spot of color on an otherwise beige wall, it’s hardly enough to sustain your interest. NICK DUSSAULT @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Whenever I’m asked about the greatest lesson I’ve learned, my response is: Happiness is a choice I make. It’s very easy to look for happiness outside ourselves: in a relationship, a dream job or the perfect body weight. When we chase happiness externally, we’re simply looking for a higher power in all the wrong places. The outside search is based on false projections we place on the world. These projections build up a wall against true happiness, which lies within us. This first exercise will help you understand how nothing “out there” can save you from the conflict that resides within. You must develop a rich inner life to enjoy life altogether. Each time we make this shift and choose happiness,
we experience a miracle. Our mind shifts from fearful delusions and reconnects to our truth, which is love. Creating these shifts requires a dedicated commitment to choosing love. To begin your commitment to new perceptions, start by paying attention to attack thoughts toward yourself and others. These negative thoughts are particularly dangerous because they can be so subtle and insidious that we might not even realize how much they’ve taken over our minds and stressed us out. But as fiendish as they are, they’re surprisingly easy to let go of. All it takes is an ordinary rubber band. Follow this tool from my new book, “Miracles Now,” and get into the practice of shifting your thoughts.
This is a simple exercise for shifting your thoughts back to peace. Wear a rubber band on your wrist. Each time you notice a negative thought arise, promptly flick the rubber band against your arm. Does this seem jarring? Good! It’s exactly what you need to literally snap yourself out of your unconscious thought. Once you’ve snapped out of the destructive cycle, it’s time to clean up the thoughts. Upon snapping the rubber band, take a long, deep breath and change the thought to, “I choose to release fear now. I choose peace instead.” This tool will help you become more aware of how your thoughts stress you out and get you into the habit of choosing a new perspective. The more you retrain yourself to choose happiness over fear, the more blissful you will be. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.
Breast cancer treatment. Pfizer drug said to be a ‘breakthrough’ Pfizer’s experimental breast cancer drug in a clinical trial nearly doubled the amount of time patients lived without their disease getting worse, but overall survival was not yet shown to be statistically significant, researchers said. The Phase 2 study, which involved women with the most common form of breast cancer, found that those treated with hormone drug letrozole plus Pfizer’s palbociclib lived for an average of 20.2 months before their cancer progressed, compared
with 10.2 months for patients given letrozole alone. The FDA has granted “breakthrough” status for palbociclib. It is viewed as one of the company’s most important experimental drugs that some analysts believe could eventually claim annual sales of more than $5 billion, if approved. The pill, which targets proteins involved in cell division, was trial-tested in post-menopausal women with locally advanced or newly diagnosed breast cancer that had spread.

Don’t freak out, figure it out Cap and gown. You can rise above that graduation pressure. As the final weeks of your college career approach, y you might be cracking ing under the weightt of so much stress. Your college days are about to be behind you, while the rest of your life lies ahead. It’s an unncertain time, but don’t on’t let that worry you. Take a few deep breaths and consider what the experts are suggesting to calm the nerves. Feeling a bit aimless as the end of your last semester approaches? Marc Goldman, executive director of Yeshiva
University’s Career Center, says not to let that get you down. “I know that it’s not an easy pill to swallow, but being negative or having self-esteem issues at this point of transition can only hurt a student’s chances [of success] even more,” says Goldman. Certainly Goldman not the only one who is n recognizes the power of re sself-esteem. The Jed Foundation is a nonprofit t that specializes in t college students’ emoc tional health. Dr. Victor tio Schwartz, Jed FoundaSchw tion’s medical director, stresses the importance of reaching equilibrium at this formative point. “Find a balance of living in the moment and planning for your future,” say Dr. Schwartz. “Make thoughtful steps to plan your future. There
are a lot of great resources at many schools. But you don’t need [to have] it all figured out. The first job or two are not lifetime contracts.” But remember, it’s not too late to start blueprinting your future. “If a student feels lost and does not yet have a career direction,” says Goldman, “he or she might consider meeting with a career counselor to assess [his or her] interests, skills, values and possible goals. It is never too late, but students approaching graduation do feel like it’s crunch time.” And in some ways, it is crunch time, but stay focused on meeting your goals, utilize campus resources and don’t forget to take deep breaths. Dreaming big with Pixar Advice from Ed Catmull
New release. The heroes of Pixar don’t just come in the animated variety. Pixar’s story is a little like the tales told in its films: Some kids with moxie who did things differently took a risk and won over the world. Each of Pixar’s 14 computer-animated films has opened at No. 1; together they’ve grossed $8.5 billion worldwide. And, just like in a fairy tale, Pixar’s story has a hero. Ed Catmull, the president of both Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios, came to movies by way of science, with degrees in physics and computer science. In 1979, George Lucas brought him in to lead Lucasfilm’s computer graphics division, which, in 1986, was purchased by Apple’s Steve Jobs and renamed Pixar. The rest, as they say, is history. But without Catmull and his cofounders’ forward-thinking managerial style and ap-

“There are many valid reasons why people aren’t candid with one another in a work environment. Search for those and address them.
•
“Do not fall for the illusion that by preventing errors, you won’t have errors to ďŹ x. The truth is, the cost of preventing errors is often far greater than the cost of ďŹ xing them.â€?

“Failure isn’t a necessary evil. It isn’t evil at all. It’s [part] of doing something new.

proach to growing a business, it might not have happened. With the help of journalist Amy Wallace, Catmull has distilled his work ethos into an engaging book, “Creativity, Inc., which will be published by Random House on Tuesday. It’s part memoir, part storytelling and part business guide. Pixar fans will enjoy behind-the-scenes stories and trivia (“Monsters, Inc. was originally about a grown man dealing with frightening creatures no one else can see);
business leaders will glean not just information but motivation, too. Catmull’s secret to success seems to be an unwavering dedication to looking for unknowns and dealing with what he finds. He believes in intense collaboration and listening to everyone on his team. To Pixar fans, it sounds familiar. JANE BORDEN @MetroPhilly

McCutcheon decision equals corruption of free speech in America
Just this week, 13 Wisconsin communities voted overwhelmingly for what the vast majority of Americans have already said they want, every single time they’ve been asked. They voted for what we need sooner than yesterday. They want a Constitutional Amendment that would state two simple and essential truths: that corporations are not people and that money is not free speech.
Now we have McCutcheon v. FEC, removing all restrictions on individual campaign giving. Keep in mind that most states elect their judges, so it is not just our voting booths but our court houses that are now up for sale to those with the deepest pockets. If the Supreme Court is correct, and money is as good as speech, well, corporations and wealthy individuals can now speak louder and longer than the rest of us, and right into the ears of those in power.
Free speech in America just got a whole lot more expensive. First it was Citizens United v. FEC, declaring corporations to be people with the right to spend as they please in our election campaigns.
than the 1 percent with the most money in this country will be able to drown out the speech of the 99 percent who have far less money to “speak” with. Is that fair? Is it really what our founders envisioned — that the rich should control the government? SHEREE SANO, VIA EMAIL

BRUINS AND ‘PEAK TALK’ IS MOSTLY NONSENSE Tuukka Rask will win his first Vezina Trophy this season, Patrice Bergeron should win the Selke and there are whispers Zdeno Chara is a strong candidate to take home the Norris Trophy. Even in a hypothetical sense, claiming three players from the same team deserve these honors feels off. But here’s the thing — no one is arguing otherwise. These predictions are not scorching-hot, controversial takes. The Bruins are just that good. They’ve lost exactly one game in regulation this past month. We are all witnesses to greatness, and as the playoffs inch closer and closer, thinking about the team’s dominance this regular season breeds simultaneous feelings that are both awesome and horrible. First, the good: Boston finds itself in the driver’s seat to win the Presidents’ Trophy,

UConn seeks fourth title The UConn men’s basketball team will be seeking its fourth national championship Monday night (9 p.m., CBS) when it takes on Kentucky. The combined seeding of UConn (7) and Kentucky (8) is the lowest since the modern tournament format began in 1979.

the designation awarded to the team who has amassed the most points during the regular season. Clearly, the Bruins are a favorite to win the Stanley Cup this spring. OK, now the terrifying part: if you’re a Bruins fan, the overwhelming amount of success experienced thus far is a zero-sum game. Regularseason pride immediately morphs into a burden of great expectations come playoff time. The by product of that overnight transition takes a toll on a fanbase and its beloved team, because we’ve convinced ourselves the B’s are too good to fail. This couldn’t be more unfair. In reality, every team is beatable. We’ve seen it happen, time and again — great regular seasons, chalk full of gushy storylines, leading to postseason letdowns. A few “brave” souls are already hedging their bets for a letdown through poorly conceived columns, radio interviews and television segments with the tagline: “Have the Bruins peaked too soon?!” On the bright side, because the B’s captured a recent Stanley Cup, we’re spared the alternative “Can they win in the clutch?” narrative. I mean, who can’t appreciate a healthy debate about the science behind the claim clutch players have a magical super power
that allows them to telepathically slow the game down in the biggest moments? Look, the Bruins may win the Stanley Cup this spring. Conversely, they could lose in the first round. Instead of enjoying the present, we have a tendency to overvalue the potential of the future and
inflate the past with nostalgia. But whatever happens, just understand that “peak talk” — or its cousin, “Have they tuned out their coach?” speculation — is what happens when we have nothing else to discuss. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

It may be low testosterone - and you have options. Tired? Low sex drive? Losing muscle tone? Maybe even a bit depressed? It may be more than just age. It could be low testosterone or Low T. Although millions of men suffer from Low T, very few know they even have it - or that they can do something about it. Right now, doctors at Men’s Health Boston are conducting a research study of an investigational medication for low testosterone. If you participate, you will receive study medication and all study-related care at no cost. You may also be compensated for your time and travel.

The Red Sox began their 2014 season a week ago and have not exactly had the look of the world beaters they were fiveplus months ago. The Sox are 2-4 out of the gate this season and are tied for last place in the AL East with Baltimore after being swept by the Brewers at Fenway this weekend. It was the first sweep at Fenway by a visitor in over a year. Boston has a relatively tough road ahead this week as it hosts the Rangers Monday through Wednesday and will be in New York to take on the Yankees for a four-game set Thursday through Sunday.
The Rangers will send Tanner Scheppers (0-0, 15.75 ERA) to the mound Monday (7 p.m., NESN) to take on John Lackey (1-0, 3.00 ERA). Martin Perez (0-0, 3.18 ERA) will face Felix Doubront (1-0, 5.06 ERA) Tuesday (6 p.m., NESN). In what should amount to the top hooky day in Boston since last Friday’s home opener — with blue skies expected for a Fenway matinee — Robbie Ross (0-0, 3.60 ERA) will square off against Jake Peavy (0-0, 3.00 ERA) at 4:05 p.m. on Wednesday in the series finale. Texas is 3-3 so far this season. MATT BURKE
