Proof. The city is mulling legislation mandating photo evidence to go with parking and health violations.
A trio of new bills in the City Council aims to set cameras on any violations that might result in a fine for New Yorkers. Councilman Jimmy Vacca of the Bronx introduced the legislation, which would require tickets issued for parking, sanitation or health code violations to be accompanied by
photographic evidence. Vacca’s bills were introduced before the council on Thursday. All three are aimed at making inspections and ticket-writing more transparent for New Yorkers. “When it comes to summonses from the city, people are basically guilty until they prove their innocence — but I want people to be innocent until proven guilty,” Vacca said. One of the bills would have the Sanitation Department take photos of any finable offense, which can range from dirty sidewalks to poorly maintained trash bins. Vacca’s parking ticket
Violations
“When it comes to summonses from the city, people are basically guilty until they prove their innocence — but I want people to be innocent until proven guilty.” Vacca bill would involve a oneyear pilot program whereby ticketing officers would need to document any stopping, standing or parking violations with photos starting January 2015. The third bill would require health department inspectors to produce photographic proof of violations and would apply to any food service establishment in the city. Business
owners would get a copy the photograph of each violation. “New Yorkers have the right to insist that there be evidence of what they’re being charged with, and with the technology available today, this is a nobrainer,” Vacca added. CHESTER SORIA @chestersoria

After 43 years of business, one of New York City’s premiere music and electronics stores has shuttered its doors. Late on Wednesday, employees of Downtown Manhattan’s J&R Music and Computer World were handed pink slips. Joe and Rachelle

MTA warns of machine scams The Metropolitan Transportation Authority warned customers Thursday of MetroCard vending machine scams after a skimming device and hidden camera were found on a machine inside the Columbus Circle subway station. Officials said a customer noticed the device attached to a vending machine on the north end of a southbound 1 train. Police are investigating the device. Customers who purchased a MetroCard at that vending machine using a credit or debit card are urged to check their accounts for signs of fraudulent activity. ANNA SANDERS

Mayor reaffirms goals in event to mark 100 days Celebration. Bill de Blasio touted his accomplishments and what remains to be accomplished.
In a broad speech marking his first 100 days in office, Mayor Bill de Blasio reaffirmed his commitment to rebuilding a progressive city in the months and years ahead. “We judge success on results — on making a difference in the lives of real people in every neighborhood,” de Blasio said in Manhattan on Thursday. The mayor touted accomplishments during the address in Cooper Union’s Great Hall, where Presidents Barack Obama and Abraham Lincoln have spoken in the past. In re-outlining his administration’s agenda, de Blasio quoted Lincoln, Plato and “The Honeymooners.” Universal prekinder-

garten, the settlement of a stop-and-frisk lawsuit and the overall management of the city were among topics discussed during the speech, which was interrupted for a campaign-style video where New Yorkers explained how the new administration’s efforts have impacted their lives. While de Blasio provided no new specific proposals or plans going forward, the speech served as an opportunity for the mayor to galvanize supporters. “We have so much more to do, but we know from what we’ve accomplished already that it can and will be done,” he said at the end of the address. Following his remarks, de Blasio greeted the audience in front of the stage for about 25 minutes, sometimes taking selfies with admiring members of the public. Health. Take a closer look at this controversial procedure. Ear candling is a contentious, but popular alternative therapy, reputed to safely clear wax and debris from the ear canal and help conditions such as ear aches, infections, headaches and sinus pressure. It is thought to have originated in biblical times. But the treatment has detractors, especially in the medical profession, with some viewing it as a bogus, unproven alternative therapy. “The process involves creating a negative pressure, which presumably sucks out the wax,” says Dr. David Schessel, an ear, nose and throat specialist at Long Island’s Stony Brook Medical Center. “There have been some evaluations of its efficacy: One showed no vacuum was created, another found that the debris collected wasn’t from the ear, but from combustion and the candle. I wouldn’t recommend it.”
Still, many spas and natural healing centers offer the service, and kits are available for in-home use. Maria Deslandes, owner of Boston’s Southwest Day Spa, introduced ear candling eight years ago after she tried it herself. “I used to have problems with backkground noise,” says Deslandes. “If someone was talking and there was a noise in the background, I couldn’t hear what at they were saying. ng I had three ear candling sessions and afterward I could hear everything clearly,” she recalls. “I flew to Brazil a while ago and came back feeling very congested. After two sessions, it was gone. I Light my fire

have one client who suffered from terrible ringing in his ears and after three sessions it was significantly improved. It’s a wonderful treatment.” Deslandes says ear candling, which takes about 15 minutes per ear and is pe performed with the patient lying down on a masdo sage table, is s soothing, too: s “The lights are “ low; we have l candles burning ca in the room. We stay aand make sure it goes well. Most people say they find it very relaxing.” Dr. Schessel not only questions its efficacy, though, but its safety too. “Pushing something into the ear canal has the potential to do damage,” he says. “Most people think of earwax as dirt, something to be gotten out. Wax is natural and it has a purpose. It waterproofs the ear and kills bacteria. The ear is a selfcleaning structure. Severe impactions can occur.” LINDA CLARKE @MetroBOS

CULTURE Hammy goodbyes
What would Jon Hamm and Don talk about if he got a chance to sit down with the mysterious ad exec? “I think we’d talk about life,” Hamm says. “I think we’d talk about families, we’d talk about experiences and I’d ask him to please shape up.” And what will he do when it’s finally over? “I’ll have a glass of scotch and I’ll sit and stare out the window and someone will take a picture of me,” he says with a laugh.
MATTHEW WEINER The “Mad Men” mastermind is OK leaving his characters to exist in the public consciousness.
THIS IS THE END The end of the “Mad Men” era is upon us, but don’t expect series creator Matthew Weiner to let his guard down about spilling the show now. With the first half of the seventh and final season of the critically acclaimed drama making its debut, Weiner is being as careful as ever. But he did offer us these tidbits. How have you maintained the production’s notorious level of secrecy? It’s been helped a lot by the fact that the critics realize that the audience doesn’t want to hear [scoops]. The hardest part is keeping the guest cast quiet. They get really excited and want to tell everyone they’re going to be on the show, and you kind of say, “Wait, and I promise we’ll help you when the show comes out.” I threaten them, but not with violence — with the only leverage that

I have, which is being replaced. Have you thought about what happens to the characters after the final episode? No, I think about where I’m going to leave them and where they’ll be in people’s minds when it’s over. That’s the permanent spot. That’s the carbonite they’re stuck in. Do you have a sense of what you’ll want to make next? No, I don’t. I think I’ll know what’s on my mind when it’s over for a little bit. I haven’t taken a vaca-

tion in a long time. I made a film in between two of the seasons, which is coming out this summer, after this block of episodes. In terms of future work, I will not know until I’m done. [TV work] is one of the best lives there is, and I don’t expect this to happen again, but I would love it.
For six seasons, “Mad Men” has chronicled the career of Don Draper, but it’s also followed the career of his assistant turned full-fledged Mad Woman, Peggy Olson, played by Elisabeth Moss. Some viewers have even gone so far as to speculate that the whole arc of the series — which began on Peggy’s first day on the job, after all — is actually more about Peggy than Don, especially considering the changing cultural landscape of the 1960s. Moss, for her part, is flattered by the idea, but she’s not having it. “I think Quoted

it’s about Don Draper — he’s the lead character of the show,” she insists. “That would be a very long red herring story, very elaborate.” So, red herrings aside, what does Moss hope the conclusion of the series holds for Peggy? More than simply following in Don Draper’s footsteps, that’s for sure. “I hope that she finds her own place, you know? I think that she will find maybe a better, happier place, hopefully,” she says. “I want her to be working and I want her to be successful at her work, but I think that’s because I identify with her, so I kind of want what she wants. I hope that she gets that.” And Moss herself will be getting something, as the actress admits there’s at least one prop from the show she’ll be making off with once production wraps: “This ring that I always wear, that I’ve worn in every episode — I will be taking that ring,” she says. NED EHRBAR
How has the show changed your life? There’s no calculation. Creatively it’s been challenging beyond my wildest dreams. I’ve gotten to direct, I’ve gotten to learn how to produce, learn how to deal with business. I’ve written a lot about it in the show, I will tell you that. I’ve written a lot about the changes I’ve experienced in the show. It may be in the past, but it’s a very thin smokescreen. Although I’m not Don. [Laughs] NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

A fresh look at ‘Les Mis’ You may think you’ve seen “Les Miserables” done well, but you’ve never seen it done like this. Top theater talents come together to give one of history’s mostloved stories a fresh spin (albeit, sadly, without the show’s trademark turntable). If you’ve only seen the movie, then you definitely deserve to have your memory purged by the high-caliber production now playing on Broadway. In fact, everything goes so smoothly that nitpicky issues seem more prominent. For example, casting goes colorblind as Nikki M. James (“The Book of Mormon”) plays teen Eponine. The character is first represented by a younger actress with lighter skin, from two white parents, and then her race inexplicably changes halfway through the show. It’s something you have to notice, and therefore deliberately overlook; this is work the
audience shouldn’t have to do. Plus, it seems like a strangely unilateral move for James following her Tony Award for “Mormon.” On the upside, there’s Caissie Levy (“Ghost”) as Fantine, whose rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” — overplayed recently thanks to Susan Boyle and Anne Hathaway — makes it sound like a new song. The same can be said of the undeniably show-stopping “Bring Him Home” as sung by Broadway newcomer Ramin Karimloo, playing If you go

Will Swenson turns the hateful Javert into a dashing villain; it’s always hard to convey proper gravitas when he seems to be the only inspector running around all of France, but Swenson does his best to get the audience to take our obsessive antagonist seriously. Unfortunately, that’s all undone with a giggle-inducing climax that launches him to his death in slow motion, limbs grappling without purchase through the air. Javert does, after so much hard work by Swenson, deserve a little more dignity. Still, you can’t bypass the chance to hear this incredible score via live orchestra, coupled with a revamp that’s so unexpectedly entertaining that all little flaws can be forgiven. T. Vampire movie. Jim Jarmusch lets bloodsuckers Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton just hang.
You’re not a real filmmaker until you do your own twist on the vampire movie. Jim Jarmusch’s contribution is, inevitably, not remotely a horror film, a couple drained humans aside. It’s as much a hangout movie as it is a film about death, as well as relationships. In fact, it’s a great relationship movie. The 500-year-old Adam is in a committed union with a much older woman: Eve (Tilda Swinton), who is 5,000. As the film starts, they’re not living together. They’re not separated; they’re just taking

some needed solitary time, which means he’s in a shady part of Detroit and she’s in walkable, labyrinthine Tangier. When they decide to reconvene at his place, the story doesn’t kick into another gear. A film that was about one guy killing time by himself, listening to records, becomes a movie about two people killing time together, listening to records, as well as talking and making out. The arrival of Eve’s younger, reckless party girl sister, Ava (Mia Wasikowska), threatens to destroy the bubble they’ve created, as well as the film. She doesn’t, because Jarmusch is so committed to this being a deep hang. There are jokes, many of the wecouldn’t-resist type: Adam’s walls are lined with pictures of old friends,

••••• including Oscar Wilde and (a nice touch) Rodney Dangerfield, while Eve has a hookup for fresh blood via playwright Christopher Marlowe (John Hurt). Even more valuable,
this is that rare, wholly positive look at coupledom. Our leads are an odd fit: He’s a moody brooder, while she’s full of life. Yet they’re as comfortable together as they are alone. This is a film that lives at night with people who enjoy it, the camera prowling homes powered by dim lights and records, and streets that have a calming lack of people. It only makes sense that the warmest film Jarmusch has ever made is about coldblooded killers. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Colbert to take over for Letterman
Ah, Coachella. The annual music fest — which will be held this weekend in Palm Springs, Calif. — is probably now better known for the celebrity attendees (and ridiculous outfits) than the actual music. (Seriously, do YOU know who is playing this weekend?) In honor of the famed bacchanalian fest, we’re taking a look back at the rich and famous who have braved the heat, fedoras and cutoffs in years past.

Who needs to change? Me or ‌? “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord...â€? Acts 3:19 Repentance is the fundamental message of the gospel. Unfortunately, many of us spend more time thinking about all the changes that need to happen around us, rather than the change we need to make in our own lives. The gospel is our opportunity to become what God wants us to be – His servants. Are you willing to change? Call for information about our worship services, Bible studies and other events. It’s oďŹƒcial: Stephen Colbert will be leaving “The Colbert Reportâ€? to take over David Letterman’s old gig as host of “The Late Showâ€? at CBS. Colbert was rumored to be the top choice almost as soon as Letterman announced his retirement, with Mashable suggesting early on it would be him. After only one week of speculation (and presumably behindthe-scenes negotiations), CBS announced that Colbert would be taking over the show, and that he’d been signed to a ďŹ ve-year agreement.

Features grievances, in list form Re: Metro, April 9. I have two simple points:
1
Under the poor excuse for celebrity gossip, this woman wants to remind both Dom Nader and Miranda Kerr that slutty isn’t sexy. This type of magazine cover [for GQ] leads to extremely premature sexualization, not to mention body issues and eating disorders. This is not a positive or healthy image for a young girl to be looking at. How about someone with enough class and grace to wear clothes and STILL look good (and actually look sexy instead of like a happy hooker)! P.S. Nader has to puff his lips
out a little more. I can almost see the words “I’m trying to look like I’m easy” falling out of Kerr’s mouth.
2
Second, under the Style section, wouldn’t your pores be processing bad things by letting them leak out of your body on purpose? Isn’t anything you put in your body, even extremely healthy food, food nonetheless? I mean, we s— out apples and tofu as much as milkshakes and cake. Why wouldn’t our pores process out “bad things” just like they process out sweat, alcohol and everything in between? JENNIFER MATRONE, VIA EMAIL

CLOSER CAROUSEL IN FULL EFFECT We are not even two weeks into the 2014 baseball season, and a fistful of bullpens are already in disarray. Show us your surprised face. The ever-elusive chase for saves in fantasy leagues is raging, with owners who didn’t overpay on draft day reaping rewards. Digesting and projecting these situations early on will ensure health in the category all year.

Heading into the spring, Jim Henderson was penciled in as the Brewers closer. But that’s why they play the games. Henderson struggled so badly that Francisco Rodriguez got the call on Opening Day and hasn’t looked back. Through Wednesday, he hadn’t allowed a run, while Henderson scuffles
Storm coming Matt Lindstrom surprisingly beat out Nate Jones for the closer gig with the White Sox, sending owners scurrying to scoop him up. Don’t take the bait. Lindstrom, 34, can’t get lefties out and has given up six hits in three innings with one blown save already. Jones (hip) is the player to stash on injured lists.
