Examining ‘America’s Greatest Marathon’ History lessons. Boston Marathon artifacts, on loan from The Sports Museum, are on display at Best of Boston. A partnership between Faneuil Hall Marketplace and The Sports Museum will offer tourists and locals alike the opportunity to learn more about the Boston Marathon’s place in history. “Boston: America’s Greatest Marathon,” a free exhibit chronicling the history of the famous race, is now open to the public at Best of Boston in the North Market building. “We’re always looking for ways to entertain, enhance, romance and give back, and thus birthed the idea for this special exhibit,” said Al Shameklis, president and COO of Color Inc., which owns Best of Boston. Trophies, medals, marathon bibs, posters, Wheaties boxes photographs, yellow tulips and scrapbooks are just some of the artifacts representing notable moments from the early days of the Boston Marathon, which began in 1897. It includes memories of the World War years, Johnny Kelley’s first run in 1928 — as well as his 60 additional races — the inclusion of female runners in the 1960s and runners with disabilities in the 1970s. The exhibit culminates with tributes to last year’s fa-

tal bombings, and also offers a backdrop of the Boylston Street finish line so visitors can pose for photographs. The artifacts are on display year-round at The Sports Museum’s TD Garden location, according to museum curator Richard Johnson, who considers the city’s marathon one of the greatest sporting events in the world. Johnson co-wrote “Young at Heart: The Story of Johnny Kelley,” a biography of the beloved marathon champion. He lovingly refers to the marathon as “the people’s race,” and said he expects this year’s marathon
to be one of the great days of Boston history. “In the wake of this tragedy both Boston and the running community galvanized more than ever before as millions were raised to aid the victims and plans were made to ensure Boston would remain the greatest road race on the planet,” said Johnson. “It is our hope this exhibit ... captures a measure of the history and triumphant spirit attendant to this great race.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Negotiation. Walsh, fire union reach contract deal The city and the firefighter’s union reached a deal on a new contract, both sides said over the weekend. Details of the new contract were not released, but Local 718 President Rich Paris said in a statement he was “grateful” to Mayor Marty Walsh for getting the deal done. Walsh, in a statement, said he was “extremely pleased” the two sides were able to reach a tentative agreement.
“All parties came to the table with mutual respect and open minds, willing to reach a compromise that serves the best interests of the City of Boston -— for firefighters and taxpayers,” Walsh said. The deal means it is the first time the two sides have avoided going to arbitration since 2001. Union members and the City Council still have to vote on the contract. MICHAEL NAUGHTON
In December, the City Council approved a new contract with the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association. •
Both sides went to arbitration, which led to the awarding of a 25.4 percent pay increase over six years for officers.
•
In 2010, the firefighter’s union and city agreed to a more than 19 percent raise over five years, including a 1.5 percent increase for mandatory drug testing.
Decision day. Judge to rule on painkiller ban A federal judge is expected to rule today on whether Massachusetts can continue its ban of a painkiller whose maker has sued the state. A hearing is scheduled for this morning at federal court in South Boston. The maker of Zohydro argued against the banning of the drug since Gov. Deval Patrick declared a public health emergency last month citing an “epidemic of opiate abuse.”
During an initial hearing last week, Judge Rya Zobel indicated that she would allow the injunction and said that she thought Patrick was “out of line” regarding the ban. She continued the hearing until today to give the state more time. Zogenix, the Californiabased drug maker, filed a motion in federal court last week to stop the state’s ban on its drug. City reveals Marathon safety plan An increased police presence, more security cameras and inperson trauma counseling are just some of the plans that the city has to ensure the public’s safety and health during next Monday’s Boston Marathon. Boston police will increase the number of uniformed and undercover officers along the route. Also, more than 100 cameras have been installed and up to 50 observation points will be set up around Back Bay to monitor the crowd. Officials urged people to leave strollers and backpacks at home; however, those items are not banned. Bags and strollers may be subject to search, police said. Also, checkpoints will be set up as people try to head into the Boylston Street and Commonwealth Avenue areas. On Sunday, Joe Dunn of Salem took in the memorial exhibit at the Boston Public Library. The Marathon volunteer said he wouldn’t tell anyone to stay away from Boylston Street for the race, especially with the new security measures. “Just the opposite,” he said. “I think everyone feels they need to support the runners. … It’s important a lot of people come out for that.”

Hot air. UN gives warning actions must come fast to curb global warming A United Nations report said on Sunday that governments must act faster to keep global warming in check and delays until 2030 could force them to use little-tested technologies to extract greenhouse gases from the air. The study, drawing on work by more than 1,000 experts, said a radical shift from fossil fuels to lowcarbon energy such as wind, solar, or nuclear power would shave only about 0.06 of a percentage point per year off world economic growth. “It does not cost the world to save the planet,” Ottmar Edenhofer, a German scientist who is co-chair of a meeting of the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, told a news conference in Berlin. Mudslide hurts fabled fishing river With the death toll from the March 22 mudslide at 36 and rising after millions of cubic yards of earth spliced with trees buried a neighborhood near Oso, Wash., the ecological damage to one of the nation’s most storied steelhead fly-fishing waters is already evident. The Stillaguamish River has been stained a dark graygreen by silt and nearly blocked by a mud dam, and a pumping system meant to aid search efforts is sending water mixed with sewage and chemicals back into the river. U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who resigned last week, says she made the decision to leave and told President Barack Obama last month that staying on “wasn’t an option.” In her first interview since the White House announced her resignation, Sebelius told
NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that she and Obama first spoke about her future after Obamacare enrollment began to show signs of recovering from its disastrous Oct. 1 launch. Sebelius was responding to speculation that the White House may have forced her resignation in a bid to open a new chapter for Obama’s signature domestic policy achievement ahead of November’s election battle for control of Congress during the final years of the Obama presidency. Obama’s new nominee draws early GOP fire President Barack Obama’s new nominee for health secretary drew some early political fire from Republicans on Sunday in what could foreshadow a stormy election-year confirmation debate in the U.S. Senate over the future of the law known as Obamacare. There’s a lot of great music at Coachella. But part of the fun is seeing stars trade in their red carpet outfits for more bohemian looks at the threeday festival. Last weekend, celebrities popped up all over the desert, rocking out to sets — and sometimes hopping onstage to lend their talent. Coachella kicked off Friday night with hip-hop duo Outkast, reunited for the first time in eight years. “It’s good to be back,” Big Boi told the audience. The reunion was cut short, however, when a tech guy reportedly killed their microphones about 1 a.m. — meaning they were unable to bring out Killer Mike for their finale of “The Whole World.” The audience was not pleased. On Saturday night, new mom Gwen Stefani — who just gave birth last month — popped up onstage to join headliner Pharrell Williams for “Hollaback Girl.” Stefani
wasn’t the only bold-faced name to make a guest appearance — Nelly came on for “Hot In Herre,” Busta Rhymes for “Pass the Courvoisier Part II,” Snoop Dogg for “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and DJ Diplo for “Aerosol Can.” Beyonce freaked everyone out when she appeared onstage for her sister Solange’s set on Saturday night, even though she didn’t sing. That same night, Jay-Z rapped alongside his former nemesis Nas for a few songs. OK, enough with the music. It’s time for what Coachella is also known for: straightup gossip. Hilary Duff showed up at the music festival with her estranged husband Mike Comrie on Friday. Meanwhile, Joe Jonas was seen canoodling with girlfriend Blanda Eggenschwiler (that name — please hold me) all weekend, and Selena Gomez was spotted with her new besties, Kylie and Kendall Jenner.

not that there was anything wrong with the girls that left, they’re all really great girls. But I think sometimes, you know, you need to shake things up a little bit. The show’s been on a very long time, and I think the influx of new, fresh opinions and styles is a good thing. Did that make you feel closer to Vicki Gunvalson and Tamra Judge, being the veterans? I’ve always been closest with Tamra, out of everyone on the show. So that was the same. And Vicki and I have always had a very fond relationship, also. So tell me about the new girls. Did you know either Shannon or Lizzie before filming? I didn’t. And it’s funny because now that I know Shannon, I don’t know why we didn’t know each other. We seem to go to the same places and do the same things with our kids. And then Lizzie, right when I met her, she told me she was very good friends with my husband’s surgical tech, who’s been with him for 15 years. So I immediately I felt a connection with her. … I think they casted well; these girls are authentic and have strong opinions. Is that surprising? It’s a difficult thing when you have a show that’s been on this long. I know not everyone believes this, but I never watched the show before I joined the cast. ... So I came in really forming my own opinions of people. [For] girls who have watched the show to come join the cast, it’s a more difficult task.

Is there any other drama we should look forward to? It’s a roller coaster. I think the audience is really going to like it. Obviously introducing three new people is not an easy task, but I feel like the audience is going to embrace these girls. … There’s a lot of really good, honest storylines, and I think the audience is going to respond to it. There’s a trip to Hawaii in the premiere that’s just you, Vicki and Tamra —no new girls. What happened was, I was working on an episode of “Hawaii Five-O.” I had to go two separate weeks. And the first time I went with [my husband] Terry. And I then I had to go back, and Tamra and I were hanging out, and she was like, “Why don’t I come?” And then she invited Vicki. with you. You had all those blondes surrounding you before. I know, right? As a native New Yorker, what is like to be on the West Coast surrounded by all these bubbly California blondes? There are times I definitely feel blonde-impaired. … In Orange County, previously we were only represented by the bubbly blonde beach girls. And now we’re being represented by a different group, which I really like. Lizzie is from Kentucky and she brings a different flavor. [And] I like bringing a little bit of the New York flair to O.C. … [Sometimes] I think the girls don’t really appreciate me. DIY job planning Get out there. It’s up to you to make the most of your opportunities. Instead of waiting for opportunity to knock, why not get out there today and create it yourself? To plan your own professional development with a custom fit for where you want to be, the key is having a razor-sharp focus. But let’s face it: Unless you have the budget to hire a life coach, it’s on you to set yourself up for the opportunities you most want. Here are four DIY ways to take the initiative and open doors for yourself.
Ask an insider The challenge: Line up an informational interview with a VIP in your field, to be conducted by phone or in person. Getting the inside scoop on what it takes to succeed in the field can help you decide if it’s

a good fit. “The more knowledge you have, the better decisions you can make about your career, advises university career services professional Katharine Brooks. Plus, she adds, “You’ll be better prepared for the real job interview. The prerequisites: Be prepared with smart questions and excellent communication skills. Remember: Busy people may be more inclined to meet if you have a mutual acquaintance.
Expand your referral network The challenge: Once weekly, line up a lunch date with someone in your extended network. People get jobs because of who they know. Networking doesn’t end once you’ve made a connection or met at a college event. It’s an ongoing process. The prerequisites: Think of reciprocity and memorize your elevator pitch. Gratitude pays o Does gratitude trump patience regarding delayed financial rewards? One psychology professor at Northeastern thinks so. Three groups were assigned different tasks. One group recalled an event that made them thankful; another group thought about an event that boosted happiness. Each group then wrote about their recollection and made choices about receiving money immediately, or a larger amount in the future. Professor David DeSteno concluded that the more grateful group exerted less willpower when postponing immediate gratification.

Horoscope
Aries | March 21-April 20. Unexpected costs could cause you to limit your activities. Budget carefully until your bank account improves. You can rekindle the romance with your mate if you are more attentive.
Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22. Emotional frustration will tempt you to overindulge. Stay away from the fridge, your credit cards and stimulants. Instead, face problems head-on and resolve them openly.
Taurus | April 21-May 21. Your friends may be too demanding today. Consider postponing a get-together until you feel confident and able to refuse unwelcome requests.
Scorpio|Oct. 23-Nov. 21. You may feel that you’re in a bit of a slump. Take care of your health with a sensible diet and regular exercise. An old friend is waiting to hear from you.
Gemini | May 22-June 20. Take some time to get together with friends. Your energy level is high, and you will be able to keep up with any challenge that comes your way. Spend time with youngsters or those who are young at heart.
Sagittarius | Nov. 22Dec. 21. If you are too self-absorbed, others will notice and complain. Make an effort to be more attentive and to show concern for what’s going on around you.
Cancer | June 21-July 22. Someone is likely to find fault with just about everything you do today. Arguing will get you nowhere. Find a quiet corner and stay out of the way.
Capricorn | Dec. 22-Jan 20. Be diplomatic and let your partner have a say before you voice your feelings. You probably have totally different points of view regarding the same situation.
Leo | July 23-Aug. 22. Negotiate household issues fairly. If you want to stay on good terms and achieve equality with your family, roommates or co-workers, get busy and do what’s expected of you.
Aquarius | Jan. 21-Feb 18. You can alleviate boredom by enrolling in a course or seminar that stimulates your interest. Take a trip to your local library and find information that will help you move forward.
Virgo | Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Be sure that you can live up to the promises you have made. Your reputation could take a tumble if you fail to follow through.
Pisces | Feb. 19-March 20. Form your own opinions instead of following the crowd. Getting involved in a joint venture with a relative could prove costly. BERNICE BEDE OSOL
Sex appeals to letter writers
make their models appear even skinnier than they already are, and I would be shocked if Kerr’s GQ cover image wasn’t an example of this. Not only is this an unhealthy and superficial portrayal of the female body, it is an unrealistic and artificial one as well.
Re: Features grievances, in list form, April 11-13, 2014 I cannot but wholeheartedly endorse letter writer Jennifer Matrone’s assessment of fashion magazine GQ’s supposedly “sexy” Miranda Kerr cover. All I would like to add is a reminder to everyone that when we look at images such as this one, what we’re seeing isn’t even a real human! SPORTS
Summer of great decisions about to begin for Celts NBA. Many of the players taking the floor for the Celtics this week won’t be here next season. Finally, there’s some interesting basketball being played in mid-April in Boston. From 2008-13, this time of year was reserved for resting elderly basketball bodies; the actual outcomes of games didn’t really matter. This April, and particularly this week, every game is crucial. The C’s are in Philadelphia on Monday to face the Lords of the Losing Streak, the 76ers, and wrap up their 2013-14 regular season at TD Garden on Wednesday as they host the Wizards. Most Celtics fans are hoping for a pair of losses to wrap up this forgettable season, in order to improve their chances at landing a top overall pick in June’s loaded NBA Draft. Boston didn’t do itself any favors in terms of “tanking” this past weekend as it beat Charlotte
Stay or go? A look at the C’s current roster: •
•
•
Brandon Bass: His contract is mostly reasonable ($6.9 million) and he has already proven himself as a solid postseason force. Keep. Avery Bradley: Like Kelly Olynyk, Bradley would likely need to be a part of any blockbuster trade the C’s swing. He has improved his shot, but his injuries continue to mount. Dump. Jeff Green: Green is enjoying his best offensive season as a pro, but the numbers (16.7 points per game) ring hollow. Dump.
•
Jared Sullinger: A no-brainer keeper. Like Rondo, unless Ainge is given the world... Keep.
•
Gerald Wallace: Could this guy be the basketball version of John Lackey? The C’s will have an awfully difficult time moving his contract. Keep.
and Cleveland. With those wins, the C’s (25-55) currently own the fifth worst record in the NBA. With another victory this week, they could fall all the way back to sixth in terms of pre-lottery draft order. Last week during a nine-game losing streak, the C’s looked as though they would be coasting to the third worst record in the league. Regardless, the end of Wednesday night’s game will signal the start of what could very well prove to be the most interesting offseason in franchise history. The Celtics have lit off plenty of fireworks during the summer months over the years (the Pierce and Garnett trade last summer, the Garnett and Allen trades in 2008), but Celtics boss Danny Ainge hinted last week on a radio interview with 98.5 The Sports Hub that most every day this summer could resemble the Fourth of July. Lottery picks aside, here’s a look at players on the current Celtics roster who should stay — or go.

Bruins will face Red Wings
Avery Bradley has never played more than 64 games in a season.
The No. 1-seeded Bruins will take on the Red Wings in the first round of the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs. Detroit won the seasonseries between the two teams, 3-1-0. The series is expected to start Friday in Boston.

Rajon Rondo
Kris Humphries
Kelly Olynyk
The big fear heading into this season was that the Celtics would make a playoff push once Rondo returned. That did not happen. In fact, the Celtics have actually been a worse team since No. 9 came back. The C’s went 14-26 prior to his return, and have gone 11-29 since. But unless Ainge is given a Godfather deal, Rondo is expected to be a centerpiece player for the next great Boston team. Decision: Keep
Humphries spent the first month of the season rotting on the bench. As the calendar turned to December, “Hump” began receiving more minutes and, as it turns out, the Celtics had their best month of the season in December (6-6). Humphries destroyed his previous image as a diva and instead has turned out to be a classic Boston player — a hustler simply interested in winning. Decision: Keep
Ainge said when he drafted Olynyk that the Gonzaga product would never be a superstar. A season into his NBA career, most would agree. Olynyk is a nice player and showed he can have big games here and there. But if Ainge is serious about a blockbuster, the team giving Boston a legit veteran would absolutely target a young player like Olynyk to be included in a package deal. Decision: Dump
