Finish line hoax suspect calls incident ‘performance’ Arraignment. The 25-year-old college art student was sent for a mental health evaluation. The college art student accused of running barefoot down Boylston Street carrying a large backpack and screaming on the anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings allegedly told police “the performance got the best of me.” Kevin “Kayvon” Edson, 25, of Wakefield and Boston, was ordered held on $100,000 bail and was sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for a competency evaluation. Edson is enrolled at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. A court doctor who evaluated Edson on Wednesday recommended he be sent to Bridgewater for further evaluation, that he has a history of psychiatric disturbances and that he has been

off his medication for about three or four months. Edson allegedly ran barefoot up Boylston Street dressed entirely in black about 7 p.m. Tuesday shouting “Boston Strong,” according to court documents and witnesses. He was also wearing blue and yellow streaks of paint under his eyes, authorities said. Prosecutors said Edson was stopped by police, who were helping a group of bombing survivors cross the Marathon finish line after making the trek from Hopkinton to Boston on Wednesday. Officers asked him what was in his backpack and he said it contained a rice cooker. “Your honor doesn’t need me to tell you the symbolism of the rice cooker on the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings,” said Assistant District Attorney Susan Terrey.

Bail argument

Defense seeks lower bail After police cleared Boylston Street during the incident, officers questioned Edson. He told them it was a nonexplosive device, authorities said, and indicated he was doing it for a “performance.” “He also stated to [officers] ‘I knew what I was doing.’ It was being conceived in my head. It’s symbolism. Come on. The performance got the best of me,” Terrey said. Edson’s attorney requested he be held on $5,000 bail and suggested that the high bail prosecutors sought was “simply based on the sensitive nature or the sentiment of what’s happening in the city of Boston.” “What he needs is some medical stabilization,” his lawyer said.

Edson was arraigned Wednesday on charges of possession of a hoax device and making a false bomb threat. / WENDY MAEDA, POOL PHOTO

The attempted assault happened on Richdale Avenue just outside of Porter Square. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO

Police in Cambridge issued an alert after a woman said she was the victim of an attempted sexual assault after leaving Porter Square early Wednesday. The woman had left the Porter Square MBTA station just after midnight and was walking alone along nearby Richdale Avenue when the attack occurred, police said. “The victim was able to fend off the attacker and return to safety,” Cambridge

police said in an alert. Police said they have a limited description of the suspect: a man wearing all dark clothing. Police urged people to be aware of their surroundings at all times, to always walk with a friend or in groups if possible, to walk with confidence with a good, steady pace, and turn and look at the person if you feel you are being followed. Authorities said they are

Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev can view the autopsy photographs of the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, a federal judge ruled Wednesday. U.S. Judge George O’Toole rejected the federal government’s claim that Tsarnaev, 20, shouldn’t be allowed to see the undoubtedly grisly pictures, as it would “needlessly revictimize the family members in the same way that innocent children who are photographed pornographically are revictimized whenever those photos are seen by others.” The ruling came one day after the anniversary of the 2013 explosions, which took the lives of two women and an 8-year-old boy, and injured 264 others. Tsarnaev and his late older brother Tamerlan, 26, are the sole suspects in the attack. The younger Tsarnaev may also be granted private visits with his two older sisters, as defense attorneys argued that

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev METRO FILE PHOTO

Quoted “The fact that Tamerlan slit the throats of three helpless people, one of whom was described as a close friend, whether the defendant ever learned of it or not, is clearly a very important part of this story in terms of who is the motivating, the leading, the active participant in [the bombings].” •

Bruck on why the defense wants access to Waltham triple murder information.

the presence of FBI agents restrict his willingness to speak freely. “Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is the youngest of three children. The eldest, Tamerlan, is dead and that leaves his two sisters,” defense attorney David Bruck said Wednesday. “The search for understanding what happened is in a large measure the story of this family and the relations between the people in it. It is our job to consider it and to learn about it.” O’Toole said he was inclined to grant the request and urged attorneys to work out a solution. In response to prosecutors’ claim that the presence of an FBI agent is necessary for security reasons, O’Toole said: “I don’t think the safety, security issue looms very large.” O’Toole also said he would review a confession that FBI agents took from Ibragim Todashev regarding the elder Tsarnaev’s alleged involvement in a 2011 Waltham triple murder, then rule on whether to release it to defense attorneys. The next court date is scheduled for June 18. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

New diesel-electric train makes first run Commuter Rail. The T expects the trains will save more than $1 million in fuel.

The first of 40 new MBTA Commuter Rail locomotives went into service on the Haverhill Line on Wednesday morning. Transit officials said they

are replacing existing locomotives that are between 35 and 40 years old with the new, environmentally friendly dieselelectric trains. Each will be tested and put into service throughout the 12 commuter rail lines as they arrive through the summer of 2015, T officials said. In August 2010, the T awarded a $222 million contract to MotivePower, Inc. for the procure-

ment of the trains. T officials said the new trains will be easily recognizable by their distinctive look, and they’ll feature modern amenities including new communication systems and improvements to passenger comfort. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama announced an initiative that will devote $600 million to address a central challenge of today’s economy: how to train workers for skills they need for jobs that are open but hard to fill. American companies will need 522,000 software developers and computer programmers in the next 10 years, as well as 224,000 electricians, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. to use $500 million in existing Labor Department funds to pay for a competition. The goal of the competition is to spur employers and community colleges to work together and develop training programs that are designed to get workers prepared for specific jobs that already exist. We also need welders, machinists, dental hygienists and electrical power line installers, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. REUTERS

2 CULTURE Back in the day

Man in the mirror Depp says that he rarely looks like himself. This is true: He loves makeup, big hair, giant coats — anything that hides his everyday goatee-and-scowl look. He wasn’t always allowed to do this. Back in the pre-“Pirates of the Caribbean” days of Tim Burton’s “Sleepy Hollow,” he wanted to give Ichabod Crane some facial prosthetics. The studio wouldn’t let him, as having a grotesque protagonist might potentially turn off viewers. He compensated by delivering one of his goofiest performances — one featuring him doing a fantastic, full-bodied faint whenever he witnessed something horrific.

THE MAN WITH A FACE

Johnny Depp plays a normal-looking man who gets sucked into cyberspace in “Transcendence.” Blipp this page to see him actually looking weird through the years. / GETTY IMAGES

Interview. Johnny Depp actually looks like himself, for once, in the sci-fi thriller “Transcendence.” Fans of Johnny Depp may be startled to discover that in his latest film, the techno-thriller “Transcendence,” the chameleon-like actor looks like … Johnny Depp. “I knew right off the bat there was no need to go into pink hair, clown nose, Ronald McDonald shoes,” says Depp, who has made a habit of taking on roles that involve

more than a little white face paint, from Tonto in “The Lone Ranger” to the Mad Hatter in “Alice in Wonderland.” But the most makeup Depp hides behind in “Transcendence” is only there to show the physical deterioration of his character, computer genius Will Caster, after he gets radiation poisoning. “It’s always more difficult and slightly exposing to play something that’s close to the surface, something that’s close to yourself,” Depp says. “I always try to hide because I can’t stand the way I look. I think it’s important to change every time and come up with something that’s interesting.” Eventually Dr. Caster’s con-

sciousness is uploaded to a massive computer, keeping him “alive” but turning him into a ghost in the machine — and a face on a video screen. “I did feel a little bit like Max Headroom,” Depp admits. “I guess the worst part is I liked it. I liked being in my little dark room, and [my co-stars] were on the other side. We couldn’t find each other sometimes.” And apparently playing a foreboding version of artificial intelligence didn’t put Depp off the idea of that theoretical technological advancement. “Having no intelligence, I’m looking forward to gaining something, whether artificial, superficial or super-duper,” he quips.

OK computer

Technophobia All joking aside, Depp admits he’s something of a Luddite when it comes to new technology — especially the handheld kind. “Things go wrong all the time, especially between me and technology. I’m not familiar with it and I’m too old-school and dumb to be able to figure it out,” he says. “Anything I have to attack with my thumbs for any period of time makes me feel stupid. So I try to avoid it as much as possible — to protect my thumbs, of course.”

Plus, there’s also the fact that by the time he’s gotten used to a piece of technology, the world may have moved on. “Things become obsolete very, very quickly,” he says. “So let’s say Will Caster, in 15 years’ time, is going to be in some weird room in Vegas, and people are plugging quarters into him. Right? Who has a mini-disc or laser disc player? It’s over.” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

Writers roam. After “Community wraps up its fifth season, you’ll still see a lot of the dean on your screen. Jim Rash may occasionally act in his writing projects (see his hilarious performance in last year’s “The Way Way Back), but his writing won’t infringe on his day job as an actor. Sure, he won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for 2011’s “The Descendants, but he says that after writing an episode of “Community, once was enough. “I wrote one episode of the season that was sort of given the title of our ‘gas-leak year,’ he laughs, referencing the fact that the show’s creator, Dan Harmon, was fired for one season (but later returned). “It was a very gratifying experience, says Rash of being able to write an episode, “but the truth is I was already envi-

In one highlight from this season, he dresses up as a Payday candy bar and delivers a freestyle rap that gets so real it terrifies him. Rash also hosts the Sundance show “The Writers’ Room,â€? where each week he welcomes writers behind some of TV’s biggest shows, such as “Scandalâ€? and “House of Cardsâ€? — but wait, isn’t there a certain half-hour sitcom on NBC that would make for a riveting discussion? “I fought hard, trying to get ‘Community’ in there for the second season, and it’s not like they were fighting me, but they had already booked everything,â€? says Rash. “I do want to do that someday though.â€?

The season finale of “Community airs Thursday at 8 p.m. on NBC. The season premiere of “The Writers’ Room airs Friday night at 9 on Sundance. / NEIL JACOBS, NBC Quoted

Martha Stewart

Tips for a perfect Easter Let’s face it: Your Easter dinner probably won’t be as perfect as Martha Stewart’s. It’s OK! You can at least steal her tips for the big day:

Ham and lamb are classic Easter dishes. Do you have any good tricks for cooking each? It is getting more diďŹƒcult to ďŹ nd delicious smoked ham with the bone in, but it’s worth trying. Every year, I get my ham

from Pat LaFrieda and cook it very slowly in a parchmentlined foil package for the prescribed amount of time. I remove most of the fat layer, score through the remaining fat layer and glaze in a 300-degree oven. Mix about a cup of Cognac with a 1-pound box of dark brown sugar to get a delicious, crunchy layer. For Easter, I also love to make a leg of lamb that is studded all over with cloves of garlic and sprigs of fresh rosemary and thyme. Roast your lamb in the oven at 375 degrees until

What are some good activities for kids who are too old for coloring and Easter egg hunts? You’re never too old for a really good Easter egg hung. A treasure Easter egg hunt with diďŹƒcult clues can make the day. Hide treasures with the eggs and even adults will get into the action.

What’s an easy Easter centerpiece? Colored hard-boiled eggs atop a bed of real hay is always a great go-to. METRO

Several sources confirm to the magazine that the pregnant Kunis is expecting a daughter. It will be the first child for the soon-to-be-married couple, though Kutcher was previously stepfather to Demi Moore’s three daughters. “Mila absolutely loves being pregnant, one source says.

Speaking of famous fetuses, it looks like there will be one for Ice-T and Coco, who told In Touch that they are trying to get pregnant. “Ice and I are very organized: We keep a list of what we need to do, and right now having a baby is next on the life list! Coco told the mag. “I’m prenataling it with vitamins and everything to get my body prepared. It will be exciting to see Coco with a baby bump — which will help her look a little more proportional.

There will be a lot more Wahlbergs in Paul and Donnie’s future (of the hamburger and Jenny McCarthy variety). / WIREIMAGE

Yesterday was a huge day for Donnie Wahlberg. Not only did girlfriend Jenny McCarthy announce their engagement on “The View, but he and his brothers (Mark and the poor, forgotten Paul) told the world they are expanding their Boston casual-dining spot, Wahlburgers. (If I were Donnie, I’d be more excited about introducing Wahlburgers to casual dining fans throughout North America than being engaged to Jenny McCarthy. But that’s just little old pro-vaccination me.) “These are the next steps in building Wahlburgers into a great and enduring worldwide brand. We have built the restaurant and partnerships with quality and care, and my brothers and I look forward to continuing the journey, said Mark Wahlberg in a statement. The expansion plans include Boston, Philadelphia and Toronto.

MARATHON GUIDE

Runners to keep an eye on TThere here have been 117 Boston Boston M Marathons dating dating back ba to its first run iin 1897. But it’s th the 118th run that will uundoubtedly be bigger aand better than ever.

SHALANE FLANAGAN

On Monday, more than m 35,660 official 35 participants (inp cluding runners cl from more than 70 countries countr outside of

the United States) will take off from the Hopkinton n starting line with one main goal in mind: Finish what was started. And you can bet that with each step taken, emotions motions will build. From Hopkinton, pkinton, through Wellesley, over Newton’s Heartbreak ak Hill and eventually — finally! nally! — Boston, they’ll run, n, and the encouragement ment and outpouring of supupport along the routee will grow as Boylston n Street nears. This year’s race will be a celebration of the city’s strength and an honoring of the victims and their families affected by last year’s attacks. Here are some of the runners you should look for along the way:

The Americanss The last American male to win the Boston Marathon athon was Greg Meyer in 1983;; the last American female to win was Lisa Larsen Weidenbach bach in 1985. How fitting would ould it be for an American to finally end that streak this year? r? It’s certainly not going to be easy, as Kenyans and y nd Ethiopip ans have dominated d the event in i recent history. Am American merican Hartmann Jason Hartm mann has fourth finished fou urth the last two yea years. ars. He

and Ryan Hall have the best chances of breaking the red, white and blue drought. For the women, Massachusetts’s own Shalane Flanagan of Marblehead finished fourth last year and is looking to make the podium this time. JASON HARTMANN

International Stars Since 1991, a Kenyan has won the men’s division of the Boston Marathon a whopping 19 times. But it was Ethopian Lelisa Desisa who finished first last year with a time of 2:10:22. He’ll be back in what could be the most competitive field yet. Look for Kenya’s Dennis Kimetto and Micah Kogo to give him a run for his money. On the women’s side, defending champ and Kenyan Rita Jeptoo returns. Last year’s second and third place finishers, Ethiopian Meseret Hailu and Kenyan Sharon Cherop, are back as well. MARATHON GUIDE

Not running? Where to watch Stay seated. Why not cheer on participants from the comfort of a bar stool along the 26.2-mile route? Every year, the Boston Marathon attracts tens of thousands of runners from more than 70 countries to the 26.2-mile route from Hopkinton to Boston’s Back Bay. Those who have actually done it know that running 26.2 miles is absolutely grueling, yet ultimately rewarding. But as families, college students, visitors and seasoned spectators hit the streets to cheer on the dedicated runners this Marathon Monday, we’ll be looking to sip some drinks at a local bar rather than eat a

protein bar. At mile 22, stake out a table at the Cityside Restaurant and Bar in Cleveland Circle to watch the race from the uppstairs patio while sipping ping mimosas, $2 Coors drafts — or the commemorative Boston 26.2 Brew. If you get there too late to snag a table, watch as the race starts to really heat up around the corner at Roggie’s, where brews will be $2 all day. McGreevy’s promises to be a hot spot of marathon activity as runners turn the corner onto Boylston Street, bringing the finish line in sight. Get there as early at 8 a.m. to claim a bar stool and enjoy half off all appetizers. Navigating the plethora of great bars peppered along the home stretch can be daunting, but be sure to stop by the

famed watering holes fa that will be serving t up u drinks for charity, including Solas, i where for every Harw poon sold $1 will be p donated to the Stepping don Strong Fund. RadioBDC returns to Forum on Marathon Monday, where they’ll be supporting the Joe Andruzzi Foundation with a watch party. Sorry, folks, but this event is already sold out, but you can easily make your way to Kenmore Square at one of the best marathon-watching spots on the route, Eastern Standard. Onlookers can sit out on the patio and catch the marathon runners as they start their final-mile sprint to the finish line. ALEX KHATCHADOURIAN @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

FAMILY DRAMA

I’ve never submitted a relationship question to a column because I’m usually confident that I have my own answers! (Hey, that cockiness has worked so far in keeping my girlfriend around for four years.) Anyway, I’m stumped: My mother and my long-time partner went out for mani/pedis. When my girlfriend came home, she said my mother let it drop that she’s angry that my father no longer romances her or shows emotions. What, if anything, should I do? I want to help, but I’m pretty sure it’s none of my business — and quite frankly, it’d be awkward as hell.

Sweetheart, your cockiness might be blocking the revelation that your question is actually about three couplings: mom and dad, mom and your girlfriend, mom and you. Too often, when we talk about relationships, we assume that means sexual intimacy or the

person snoring next to us on the mattress. We have varying degrees of love, commitment, trust and (over)sharing with our parents, siblings, co-workers, neighbors, landlords, condo board members and others. Sometimes multiple relationships overlap. Your girlfriend had a conversation about your parents’ lackluster love lives, and she delivered the news to her boyfriend. Congrats — it’s a present you don’t want! It can be painful to discover that one, or both, of your parents is suffering. You are a good son who wants to help your mom, but you don’t want to delve too deep into a chat about her sexytime with dad. Here is my advice:

Ask everyone to establish boundaries Your mom and girlfriend have

a friendship that includes cute toenails and gossip. If your mother needs an ear for private marital frustrations, and your girlfriend wants to listen, ask your girlfriend to stop tattling. Or, at the very least, request that she only share details with you on a need-to-know basis.

Cut yourself some slack: This is tough As inconvenient as this truth may be, you must accept the fact that neither your parents nor their relationship will be flawless. This is as much of an unavoidable reality as their eventual deaths. Good souls want parents to be happy, but we must also allow them space to be the flawed humans they are. Take a step back. What does Dattch mean? Dattch, in its short version, means “date catch.”

How did you come up with the idea? The actual trigger was when

Pay attention to what your mother tells you Has mom ever made an offhand comment about dad or brought up their relationship to you? If so, those conversations probably got weird and you tuned her out. Next time, use that golden ticket to enter an open conversation about your family. Tell her you want to help, but be clear about

what information makes you uncomfortable — including her talks with your lady. If she says she doesn’t want to share details about her marriage with you, respect her right to privacy. Suggest a marriage counselor, a family friend or another confidant (who isn’t sleeping with you).

#WORDTOTHEWIRE

Is your app geared only toward lesbians? It’s geared toward women. Sixty percent of our user base identifies as lesbian and the other 40 percent identifies as other, which includes bisexual, curious, pansexual, flexisexual — anyone who doesn’t identify as fully gay. There was a survey recently in the U.K. about five months ago that found that the number of women having sexual experiences with women was much higher than previously thought. I think there’s a much bigger demand among women to have a safe, secure space to meet other women for friendship, sex, relationships or anything else.

Robyn Exton, founder of Dattch, has hit it big in the U.K. with her new women-only dating app. Unlike other apps, like Tinder or Grindr, Dattch users create Pinterest-like profiles with visual boards of their interests and personal photos. Now, Dattch has made it across the pond into the U.S. The app just launched in San Francisco, and Exton plans to release it in other U.S. cities in the next few months. We spoke with Exton about what makes Dattch so special.

When did you come up with the idea for the app? The idea originally came up about two years ago now. I had been working at a branding agency and was working with a dating business and I found the space really interesting. I got the idea for it and spent the next six months building a bootstrap fund and saving money for it. I quit my job a year and a half ago.

Request Dattch in your city, ladies. PROVIDED

I was in a pub with a friend and she had broken up with a girlfriend. She didn’t want to use a dating site and we said, “Get over it — everyone does it.” As we went through the process, we thought, “This is terrible. We use these products we don’t even like. It’s a hugely missed opportunity not to use a product people actually like and want to use.”

Why did you go with such a visual concept? We did that because we had an exclusively female community for the very first time and we wanted to see how women wanted to use our app. During our beta tests we found that when we were using structures that were similar to other dating products, it just didn’t work. The way women behave when they’re dating is completely different, so we built based on what we were seeing and learning. ANDREA PARK

PETS

For pet parents, each day is a losing battle against pet hair on the couch and duvet, cat litter and worse kicked on the floor around the litter box and the puddle that grows around the drinking bowl no matter how many times you wipe up. As some wise person once said, if you don’t make a mess, then you won’t have one to clean up. These products help eliminate or at least cut down those annoying pet problems. Scatterbrain cats: Some cats get a little too thorough in the litter box, kicking litter

and, um, other stuff everywhere as they try to help by covering up their unmentionables. The daisy patterned covered Kittyagogo Litter Box not only looks super cute, but it’s practical as well. The cover helps keep litter in the tray, and it has a metal sifting rake for easy cleaning. For apartment dwellers, it offers a little privacy and a better overall view than the utterly ugly gray tray. If daisies aren’t for your cat, there’s leopard print, polka dots and plain colors too. While we love to snuggle up with our cats and dogs on the couch and bed, after a while, the fur spreads everywhere. This hand vac halts the hairy invasion with a micro brush attachment for use on upholstery. It eortlessly removes dander and hair. It’s great for car seats, too.

Lil Bub, big mission

Fragile feline. The owner of a very small (and very cute) cat talks about helping out. ANDREA PARK @andreapark andrea.park@metro.us

Lil Bub, one of the most famous Internet cats, is on a mission. The rescued feline, 2, wants to help other pets like herself. Lil Bub, or just “Bub,” as her “dude” Mike Bridavsky calls her, was born with genetic deformities, including dwarfism, that made it difficult for her to find a home. Luckily, Bridavsky and Bub found each other — and now she (yes, the cat) wants to give back. We talked to Bridavsky about a day in the life of Lil Bub and her mission to help both humans and animals. Tell us more about what Lil Bub is doing for the ASPCA. We officially announced Lil Bub’s Big Fund for the ASPCA — though I really think the ASPCA is doing more for Bub than Bub is for the ASPCA. About two years ago, Bub started getting famous, and ever since then we’ve been trying to send a positive message about spaying and neutering pets and volunteering at local animal shelters. We’ve raised money for some local shelters near us and done things around the country. Bub certainly is unique. She was found feral — born to a feral mother with three other kittens in the litter. Bub was the runt, and [when] my friend’s mom found this litter in her tool shed and took them, she noticed Bub was a little different. Bub couldn’t survive on her own in the wild. When she was about 8 weeks old, my friend sent me a photo and she looked amazing — just a half pound at 2 months. ... No one really thought she would live very long because of the genetic abnormalities she was born with — she has extra digits, dwarfism, no teeth — and she has an extremely rare bone condition that we didn’t even know about at the time. But despite all of these odds against her, she’s an extremely healthy and happy cat. It’s like her job to bring happiness and help other pets in need. How is her health now? She’s healthier than she’s ever been. Her health issue is a matter of mobility but her internal organs are fine. Her condition is not life-threatening but it affects her mobility. At one

Were you surprised when Bub got famous? What kind of feedback do you receive? It’s hard to explain because I’ve lived with her for two years. It’s kind of her job to help humans. She helps a lot. The whole charity with pets — that’s my thing. I have this message and I want to help people listen, but her thing is helping people. You’d be surprised at the messages she gets. Literally half the mes-

sages are “Bub helps me daily with my depression. Thank you for posting these photos.” We get some extreme messages from people who are thinking of ending their lives or parents with chronically ill children, and Bub is the only thing that gets them through. I’ve cried from these messages.

Aimee Mann and Ted Leo are The Both. They play The Paradise (967 Comm. Ave., Boston) on April 25.

What began with a cool double bill of Ted Leo opening for Aimee Mann has blossomed into a full-fledged collaborative project that they’ve dubbed The Both. “There was a duet that I had asked Ted to come out and do with me during my set, and then there was a song in his set that I really wanted to play bass on,” says Mann of the partnership that began on her 2012 “Charmers” tour. “We kept cross-pollinating our sets, and eventually it felt like, ‘Well, let’s do some songs together.’” With a self-titled release out this week, The Both combines two individual styles that at first might not seem so obvious. “I bring a little punch and distorted guitar,” Leo explains.

20

“Aimee brings a little more considered lyricism and content. And hopefully they kind of create something that is its own thing.” Mann says part of what brings two longtime solo acts together is that it’s nice to have a little company onstage. “There’s always some [point] in a show where things get kind of hectic, like a piece of equipment breaks down, someone makes a mistake or there’s some weirdo in the audience,” she says. “Or you’re just having a bad night. It makes all the difference to look across the stage and see your pal and know that things will be alright.” Leo adds that they keep each other in check. “I tend to race ahead when I’m playing, and Aimee keeps things a little steadier,” he says. Leo tends to race ahead when thinking of the future of The Both, too. “We’re planning the fallingout, because you have to book things so far in advance these days that we have to get on booking our eventual cash-grab reunion tour soon,” he jokes.

Celebrity doppelgangers

The Both: SVU Aimee Mann’s “Charmer” music video features Laura Linney as a robotic look-alike who attends signings for the singer. But who would play Ted Leo? He’s hoping for a “Law and Order: SVU” crossover, with Christopher Meloni “as me and Mariska [Hargitay] as Aimee, and we would have a singing detective thing going.”

Failing that, the only other actor with sufficient gravitas to bring the Ted Leo story to life? Clint Eastwood. When Mann suggests Paul Rudd, Leo isn’t having it. “Paul Rudd would be a terrible me,” he says. “[It’s] more like Denis Leary.” LISA WEIDENFELD @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

‘Skinny Love.’ Teenage British pop star Birdy finds her ‘Fire Within’ The 17-year-old musician who calls herself Birdy has a soft and serene voice, yet it’s being heard loud and clear among the chorus of boy bands, girl bands and pop stars clogging the charts. She’s an unlikely celebrity. Born with the name Jasmine Van den Bogaerde, she has to be prodded a bit to perform and is too shy to make small talk with the crowd. But when she sings, people listen. Like Lorde, she represents a new type of pop star, one that’s less shiny but can’t help but capture your attention. “I love that there’s such a

range of pop and alternative music on the charts,” Birdy tells us over the phone from Berlin, where she’s performing at the Echo Awards. (She won Best International Rock/ Pop Artist later that night.) She admits to listening to Taylor Swift just as often as Bon Iver — her cover of the latter’s song “Skinny Love” catapulted her to fame. “That song is so fragile, and it reminded me of songs that I write. I really connected to it,” she says. Birdy released an album of cover songs in 2011 with her take on artists such as Phoenix and Death Cab for

Cutie. Now, she’s touring to promote “Fire Within,” an album of her own original music with a release date of June 3. “[At first] I didn’t want to write about anything really personal, but I ended up doing it because it’s hard to get around it,” she says. Now, she’s getting ready to perform at the House of Blues, opening for Christina Perri. But besides the stage, you can also see her on billboards: She’s the face of Gap’s new campaign. It looks like this songbird is beginning to spread her wings. EMILY LAURENCE

PASTORAL PROVIDES A COUNTRY FEEL IN THE CITY

Tantalizing options include Neapolitan-style pizza.

/ DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN

One thing any pack-rat crafter notes upon walking into Pastoral is how much fun chef/ owner Todd Winer undoubtedly had in designing this, his first restaurant. Located in Fort Point, old metal milkbottle crates are inverted as clever light fittings; antique windows are screwed together to create a divider between the dining room and bar. But the decor isn’t cluttered or showoffy; Winer used just enough old stuff to do the job. New fittings — nicely upholstered banquettes and a pressed tin ceiling in the alcove — complement the recycled elements and offset austere concrete pillars and ducts with a brightening dose of pretty. While setting the scene was clearly fun for Winer, the chef who put the Met Club’s kitchen on the culinary map and who did time with Bobby Flay and Todd English says he’s having a blast in the kitchen. “This is more

me, he says, his chef whites swapped for an apron over jeans and a T-shirt. “More me means a succinct, casual menu with rich embellishments. Winer received certification from the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana as an official Pizzaiolo. That means he can make big poufy-crusted Neapolitan-style pizza in the giant, red wood-fired oven clearly visible in the open kitchen.

Exotic toppings include duck sausage, while pastas include a hand-rolled mushroom-stuffed plins with a sweet amaretto sauce and grilled escarole. Try the rare-cooked hangar steak with a harissa mint sauce. Over drinks, share some pizza dough pasties (called knots) stuffed with olives or roasted garlic or the succulent, lightly crumbed fried olives. Winer makes his own un-aged fresh cheeses, such as ricotta and mozzarella, and selected each wine, wisely including Californian St. Supery’s Napa Green-certified, estate-bottled sauvignon blanc, which is lemony and delicately floral, thus perfect for spring. Clearly, Winer’s hands-on and loving it.

Soundtrack

Springtime songs Pastoral greets its ďŹ rst spring with a sense of breezy fun, playing a soundtrack that includes the Velvet Underground, Blur and The Stranglers. There’s also rotating artwork featuring Fort Point artists (it’s surprising there are any left, given area rental prices), and Winer is currently oering diners a decadent, melt-on-the-tongue crispy Nutella pizzetta.

If we look at that number as a date (2-17-1956), it turns out to be the date of the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. A very interesting choice indeed. B’s once again with look of a champion NHL. It’s been a mixed bag of great playoff success and great failure for the Bruins in this most recent run. The Bruins have dealt with pressure in a variety of different manners in this most recent era. In 2010 they were seen as world-class choke artists, blowing a 3-0 series lead as well as a 3-0 advantage in a Game 7 to the Flyers. A year later, they were seen as the epitome of clutch, winning an unprecedented three Game 7s in one postseason. In 2012, it was Sad-Face City all over again as the B’s fell at home in Game 7 of the first round to the Capitals. Despite not bringing home the Cup last year, the Bruins’ postseason run was seen as a grand success as they came back to beat the Leafs and quickly dispatched of the Rangers and Penguins before narrowly losing to the Blackhawks. In sum, betting on or against the Bruins, in this era, in the postseason is the ultimate crapshoot. A Stanley Cup win is absolutely possible. A first-round exit is also a possibility. Las Vegas is onboard with the former. The Bruins are 3/1 favorites to win this year’s Cup. “Anything can happen,” Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli told ESPN about the

Here are updated odds, via Bovada, for the 2014 Stanley Cup winner. •

The Bruins have 3/1 odds to take home the title.

The Penguins and Blues have 7/1 odds to win it all this June.

The defending champion Blackhawks have 8/1 odds, the Ducks and Sharks are at 9/1 and the Kings are at 10/1.

The Avalanche are at 14/1, the Canadiens are at 18/1 and the Rangers and Flyers are at 20/1.

The Red Wings have 22/1 odds.

The most probable Cup Finals matchup is the Blues vs. the Bruins at 8/1. A rematch of last year’s Stanley Cup Finals between the Blackhawks and B’s is at 17/2.

The Bruins began the season with 9/1 odds to win it all.
