What to see •

‘Ballet 422’ The “star” of “Girls” cinematographer Jody Lee Lipes’ doc is Justin Peck, a 25-year-old member of the New York City Ballet, as he choreographs the company’s 422nd work. Lipes painstakingly shows how much sweat and anxiety goes into what amounts to a relatively brief performance.

‘Journey to the West’ The latest from Taiwanese minimalist Tsai Ming-liang is a maximalist work, in that the film — a series of long takes that find a monk (Lee Kang-sheng) walking very, very, very slowly in public places — will be projected onto MoMA PS1’s immersive geodesic VW Dome.

‘Land Ho!’ Two aging ex-brothers-in-law played by “This Is Martin Bonner”’s excellent Paul Eenhoorn and, in a starmaking turn, Earl Lynn Nelson, cavort about Iceland in the latest from Aaron Katz and Martha Stephens.

‘1971’ Johanna Hamilton examines a bizarrely obscure piece of history in this documentary about citizens going Edward Snowden 40-plus years ago. The crazier-thanfiction tale details how anti-Vietnam War protesters broke into an FBI office in Media, Pa. But Hamilton never loses track of the people in the story, some of whom now question whether what they did was right.

Lower Manhattan goes to the movies Cinema-a-rama. The Tribeca Film Festival returns with a ton of diverse films in tow. The story is that the Tribeca Film Festival was founded in response to the 9/11 attacks, as a way of breathing life back into Lower Manhattan. That might be mere myth; some say it was in the works already. But since its inception in 2002, it has grown and thrived, becoming a more sprawling counterpart to the fall’s more selective New York Film Festival. This year’s TFF, which starts Thursday and runs through April 27, offers the usual film festival rash of indies starring familiar faces. Emma Roberts is revelatory in Gia Coppola’s teen drama “Palo Alto,” based on a book by James Franco, who also appears in the film. Franco

Jon Favreau’s “Chef” boasts Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo, Scarlett Johansson, Dustin Hoffman and Robert Downey Jr. But TFF is big enough to make room for tiny indiesthat-could from home and

abroad. Likewise, it’s a fine place for documentaries and locally themed work. Plenty fit both categories. “This Time Next Year” looks at Long Beach, N.J., a year after its devastation by Hurricane Sandy. Actor and director Michael Rapa-

port celebrates the Knicks with his ESPN film “When the Garden Was Eden.” “Time Is Illmatic,” the fest’s opening night attraction, looks at Nas’ landmark “Illmatic” on the occasion of the album’s two decade anniversary (it turns 20 on Monday). Nas will be present to perform the album following the screening. TFF will also feature works-in-progress from major filmmakers. The team behind “The Cove” will show a rough cut of “6,” their film about endangered species. In addition, the insanely prolific Alex Gibney (“The Armstrong Lie”) will show an early version of his epic look at James Brown. Jane Rosenthal, Craig Hatkoff and Robert De Niro founded the festival, which last year attracted more than 450,000 attendees, its largest turnout ever. Metro will run coverage of the films and events throughout the fest.

Muslim leaders skeptical of NYPD The decision to shutter the New York Police Department’s unit tasked with tracking the Muslim community was met with much political fanfare, with city leaders praising the decision as a victory for civil rights. By Wednesday, however, advocates expressed a combination of relief and restrained optimism. Although pleased about the department’s efforts

to work with the Muslim community, some members are waiting to see how those efforts take shape. “News that Zone Assessment Unit is disbanded is welcomed,” said Linda Sarsour, executive director of the Arab-American Association of New York, “but people are still skeptical. It will take years to roll back trauma that NYPD intelligence caused

the American Muslim community.” Sarsour said on Wednesday that the tone of conversations with police has shifted since Bratton took the top cop post in January. More than $12 million in drugs seized in bust Three people were arrested this week in connection with an investigation into two suspected Manhattan stash houses where authorities seized 44 pounds of heroin and 17 pounds of crystal meth, believed to have a combined street value of more than $12 million. Officials said the suspects are members of a “sophisticated” drug trafficking operation based out of two apartments in a Washington Heights building, where narcotics were housed for distribution. The Wadsworth Avenue building provided the suspects with “easy access” to transportation routes, according to the Special Narcotics Prosecutor’s Office. While conducting a search warrant on one of the apartments Monday afternoon, authorities found $120,000 in a large safe in the bedroom, officials said.

Painful Varicose Veins and Swollen Legs? Now is the time to take care of it! Varicose veins are MORE than just a cosmetic problem. They can also be a warning sign of a condition called Venous Insufficiency that kills over half a million people every year.

Rescue efforts on Thursday could be hampered by difficult weather conditions, however, amid forecasts of rain, strong winds and fog. Kiev forces humiliated. Pro-Russia separatists take armored vehicles Separatists flew the Russian flag on armored vehicles taken from the Ukrainian army on Wednesday, humiliating a Kiev government operation to recapture eastern towns controlled by proMoscow partisans. Six armored personnel carriers were driven into the rebel-held town of Slovyansk to waves and shouts of “Russia! Russia!” It was not immediately clear whether they had been captured by rebels or handed over to them by

Ukrainian deserters. Another 15 armored troop carriers full of paratroops were surrounded and halted by a proRussian crowd at a town near an airbase. They were allowed to retreat only after the soldiers handed the firing pins from their rifles to a rebel commander. The setback left Kiev looking weak on the eve of a peace conference, when its foreign minister will meet his Russian, U.S. and European counterparts in Geneva. REUTERS

Study. Casual pot use causes brain abnormalities in the young Young, casual marijuana smokers experience potentially harmful changes to their brains, altering regions of the mind related to motivation and emotion, researchers found. The study published on Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience differs from many other pot-related research projects that focused on chronic, heavy users of cannabis. The collaborative effort between Northwestern University’s medical school, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School showed a direct correlation between the number of times users smoked and abnormalities detected in their brains. “What we’re seeing is changes in core brain regions in people who are 18 to 25 that you never, ever want to fool around with, said co-senior study author Dr. Hans Beiter,

are key to regulating emotion and motivation, in marijuana users who smoke between one and seven joints a week. The researchers found changes to the volume, shape and density of those brain regions. But more studies are needed to determine if those changes may have longterm consequences and whether they can be fixed with abstinence, Beiter said. REUTERS

GM seeks protection against lawsuits Court order. The car company hopes to block suits over faulty ignition switches that led to a major recall. General Motors said it would ask a U.S. court to bar lawsuits related to actions before its 2009 bankruptcy, signaling a tougher stance toward legal claims stemming from its recent recall over faulty ignition switches. GM has said it is protected from liability for claims related to incidents that occurred before it exited bankruptcy in 2009, and has taken steps to raise those issues with the court by filing motions to stay recall-related lawsuits while it asks that bankruptcy court to clarify the extent of that protection. In a filing with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas on Tuesday, GM asked for a stay on litigation related to ignition claims until a judicial panel on multidistrict litigation decides on

Judicial reckoning GM emerged from bankruptcy protection in 2009 as a different legal entity than the so-called old GM. Under those terms, “new GM” shed liability for incidents predating its exit from bankruptcy, and any lawsuits related to pre-bankruptcy issues must be brought against what remains of old GM. •

That protection has outraged some safety advocates, politicians and plaintiffs’ lawyers, who have called on GM to either waive bankruptcy protection or establish a fund to compensate victims.

The company sent emails to some 825,000 clients, saying they had been exposed to “a very narrow window of risk” related to “Heartbleed,” which has been described as the biggest computer security threat since the mass adoption of the Internet. ‘Exude vitality’

How it works “They’re competing with 28-year-olds, but it’s not like we’re going to make them look like they’re 28,” says Schulman. “Men can age and look more distinguished, but at a point they look tired and saggy, and don’t exude vitality and look worn out. It doesn’t give the right impression. Just like you go to work in a pressed suit and get a good haircut, men don’t want to neglect their faces.”

Back in the day

Man in the mirror Depp says that he rarely looks like himself. This is true: He loves makeup, big hair, giant coats — anything that hides his everyday goatee-and-scowl look. He wasn’t always allowed to do this. Back in the pre-“Pirates of the Caribbean” days of Tim Burton’s “Sleepy Hollow,” he wanted to give Ichabod Crane some crazy prosthetics. The studio wouldn’t let him, as having a grotesque protagonist might potentially turn off viewers. He compensated by delivering one of his goofiest performances — one regularly punctuated with him doing a fantastic, full-bodied faint whenever he witnessed something horrific, which was often.

Interview. Johnny Depp actually looks like himself, for once, in the sci-fi thriller “Transcendence.” Fans of Johnny Depp may be startled to discover that in his latest film, the techno-thriller “Transcendence,” the chameleon-like actor looks like … Johnny Depp. “I knew right off the bat there was no need to go into pink hair, clown nose, Ronald McDonald shoes,” says Depp, who has made a habit of taking on roles that involve more than a little white face paint,

from Tonto in “The Lone Ranger” to the Mad Hatter in “Alice in Wonderland.” But the most makeup Depp hides behind in “Transcendence” is only there to show the physical deterioration of his character, computer genius Will Caster, after he gets radiation poisoning. “It’s always more difficult and slightly exposing to play something that’s close to the surface, something that’s close to yourself,” Depp says. “I always try to hide because I can’t stand the way I look. I think it’s important to change every time, and come up with something that’s interesting.” Eventually Dr. Caster’s consciousness is uploaded

to a massive computer, keeping him “alive” but turning him into a ghost in the machine — and a face on a video screen. “I did feel a little bit like Max Headroom,” Depp admits. “I guess the worst part is I liked it. I liked being in my little dark room, and [my co-stars] were on the other side. We couldn’t find each other sometimes.” And apparently playing a foreboding version of artificial intelligence didn’t put Depp off the idea of that theoretical technological advancement. “Having no intelligence, I’m looking forward to gaining something, whether artificial, superficial or superduper,” he quips.

OK computer

Technophobia All joking aside, Depp admits he’s something of a Luddite when it comes to new technology — especially the handheld kind. “Things go wrong all the time, especially between me and technology. I’m not familiar with it and I’m too old-school and dumb to be able to figure it out,” he says. “Anything I have to attack with my thumbs for any period of time makes me feel stupid. So I try to avoid it as much as possible — to protect my thumbs, of course.” Plus, there’s also the

fact that by the time he’s gotten used to a piece of technology, the world may have moved on. “Think about how technology is moving so rapidly. Things become obsolete very, very quickly,” he says. “So let’s say Will Caster, in 15 years’ time, is going to be in some weird room in Vegas, and people are plugging quarters into him. Right? Who has a mini-disc or laser disc player? It’s over.” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

The millions this gets will be ‘for Real’ Religious drama. Greg Kinnear shines in a money-grabber that tries to be more than kitsch. There’s actually a terrific film that could be made from “Heaven Is for Real,” the best-selling book in which a cash-strapped Nebraska preacher used his son’s near-near-death experience to create a cash cow. Title be damned, it’s a story about doubt — not in the Christian faith, which goes unwavering, but about whether you believe your 4-year-old when he won’t shut up about meeting Jesus, seeing angels and hanging with dead relatives. The book is a queasy

mix of bald greediness and utter sincerity. The movie is, too. Pastor dad Todd Burpo (Greg Kinnear) is relieved when his son (Connor Corum) escapes from a near-fatal case of appendicitis. He’s less sure what to do when he talks of seeing heaven, and generally spouting about things he’s had ingrained in his head since birth. The film does try to be more than kitsch — or it tries to try. The narrative is all about whether Todd should believe his son, even as so many in his small, churchy town do not. But while it allows people to bring up criticisms, it doesn’t actually engage. Kinnear’s Todd is beset upon by all sides — by mean atheists, by mean parishioners, even,

eventually, by his goodly wife (Kelly Reilly). He’s even mocked by firemen. Todd doesn’t respond — he just makes sad faces. Its debate style could be called an argument through victimization: It wants you to side with him only because everyone else is a jerk.

Timed to Earth Day, Disney’s “Bears” is a fuzzy, visually spacious look at the wild behemoths (and Stephen Colbert’s legendary foes) in their natural habitat. Like in previous docs from Disney, there is a storyline at work here. The film follows Sky, a mother bear, and her cubs Scout and Amber as they spend a year trekking through the Alaskan Peninsula, over wintry mountains and lush fields, in order to find some watery spots and fish for/ gorge on salmon. As adorable as it makes Sky and her kids out to be, “Bears” thankfully reminds audiences that these creatures are still hardcore killers who can turn on their own in a minute. This is certainly the case whenever the trio comes into contact with more treacherous bears, like king-of-the-mountain Magnus, who starts eyeing

the cubs when fish food becomes sparse. They even have to contend with Tikaani, a scheming wolf who’s constantly lurking around. All the while, John C. Reilly provides cheeky, off-camera, color commentary for what’s happening onscreen. While Reilly’s signature, dopey voice adds a consistently playful tone to the proceedings, one wonders if the movie needed Reilly’s voice at all. CRAIG D. LINDSEY

Exhibiting Rash behavior Writers roam. After “Community” wraps up, you’ll still see a lot of the dean on your screen. Jim Rash may occasionally act in his writing projects (see his hilarious performance in last year’s “The Way Way Back”), but his writing won’t infringe on his day job as an actor. Sure, he won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for 2011’s “The Descendants,” but he says that after writing an episode of “Community,” once was enough. “I wrote one episode of the season that was sort of given the title of our ‘gasleak year,’” he laughs, referencing the fact that the show’s creator, Dan Harmon, was fired after that season (but later returned). “It was a very gratifying experience,” Rash says of being able to write an episode, “but the truth is I was already envious and sort of

“These are celebrities in their own right, because there is an exposure to the creative minds that people didn’t have in the past. The wall is down.” Rash, on how social media has helped television writers get their due. Visit Metro.us for more on Jim Rash and to watch a clip of the amazing performance pictured above.

a fan of Dan’s brain … and our writers that he puts together each year, so they don’t need me. I’m happy to just play the dean.” And Rash playing the dean makes viewers happy, too. In one highlight from this season, he dresses up as a Payday candy bar and delivers a freestyle rap that gets so real it terrifies him. Rash also hosts the Sundance show “The Writers’ Room,” where each week he welcomes writers behind some of TV’s biggest shows, such as “Scandal” and “House of Cards” — but wait, isn’t there a certain half-hour sitcom on NBC that would make for a riveting discussion? “I fought hard, trying to get ‘Community’ in there for the second season, and it’s not like they were fighting me, but they had already booked everything,” says Rash. “I do want to do that someday, though.” PAT HEALY @metrousmusic

Who needs to change? Me or …? “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord...” Acts 3:19 Repentance is the fundamental message of the gospel. Unfortunately, many of us spend more time thinking about all the changes that need to happen around us, rather than the change we need to make in our own lives. The gospel is our opportunity to become what God wants us to be – His servants. Are you willing to change? Call for information about our worship services, Bible studies and other events. Tips for a perfect Easter Let’s face it: Your Easter dinner probably won’t be as perfect as Martha Stewart’s. It’s OK! You can at least steal her tips for the big day:

Ham and lamb are classic Easter dishes. Do you have any good tricks for cooking each? It is getting more diďŹƒcult to ďŹ nd delicious smoked ham with the bone in, but it’s worth trying. Every year, I get my ham from Pat LaFrieda and cook it very slowly in a parchment-lined foil package for the prescribed amount of time. I remove most of the fat layer, score through the remaining fat layer and glaze in a 300-degree oven. Mix about a cup of Cognac with a 1-pound box of dark brown sugar to get a delicious, crunchy layer. For Easter, I also love to make a leg of lamb that is studded all over with cloves of garlic and sprigs of fresh rosemary

and thyme. Roast your lamb in the oven at 375 degrees until the skin is crackling. Remove from the oven and let it rest for at least half an hour before carving.

What are some good activities for kids who are too old for coloring and Easter egg hunts? You’re never too old for a really good Easter egg hung. A treasure Easter egg hunt with diďŹƒcult clues can make the day. Hide treasures with the eggs and even adults will get into the action. What’s an easy Easter centerpiece? Colored hard-boiled eggs atop a bed of real hay is always a great go-to. METRO

That Jam. This weekend, the Brooklyn Folk Festival takes over the Bell House. It’s heartening to hear that New York City’s storied folk scene still manages to keep time with the daily mechanized soundscape. This weekend’s Brooklyn Folk Festival, put on annually by the Jalopy Theatre and Down Home Radio Show, goes beyond the familiar jugs, fiddles and banjos of American folk. The 30 bands taking part in this year’s edition demonstrate a global perspective, with performances of Indonesian Gamelan, North Indian classical and Chinese acapella. But don’t worry — there’s still plenty of old-time string band music hailing from the United States, with dozens of performers coming up from the South. Festival co-producer Eli Smith considers the event

more authentic than most, comparing it to the influential Newport and University of Chicago folk festivals of the 1960s. “There are a lot of festivals out there today advertised as ‘folk,’” he points out, “but only present singer-songwriters and forms of rock derived from it.” For the musicians themselves, the three-day hootenanny offers more than just a chance to show off musicianship — it also allows

them to pay tribute to the spirit of the genre. “It’s about community, plain and simple,” Ernesto Gomez, guitarist and singer in Brotherhood of the Jug Band Blues, explains. “It’s the people’s music.” Perhaps the most impassioned tribute this year is a group singalong led by the Jenkins Family band dedicated to folk icon Pete Seeger, who died in January. Although the festival’s

popularity has forced it to change venues several times in its six-year history, it remains at the Bell House, a converted 1920s warehouse in Gowanus. In addition to musical, vocal and instrumental workshops, there’s also square dancing, film screenings and, yes, the famous Banjo Toss contest. T. MICHELLE MURPHY @TMichelleMurphy

Baby news

A girl for Kunis and Kutcher It looks like it’s going to be a girl for Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, according to Us Weekly. Several sources confirm to the magazine that the pregnant Kunis is expecting a daughter. It will be the first child for the soon-to-be-

married couple, though Kutcher was previously stepfather to Demi Moore’s three daughters. “Mila absolutely loves being pregnant,” one source says, while another adds that the equally ecstatic Kutcher “is doting on Mila.” No word yet on a due date or a wedding date, though.

There will be a lot more Wahlbergs in Paul and Donnie’s future (of the hamburger and Jenny McCarthy variety). WIREIMAGE

Wahlburgers announce North America domination Yesterday was a huge day for Donnie Wahlberg. Not only did girlfriend Jenny McCarthy announce their engagement on “The View,” but he and his brothers (Mark and the poor, forgotten Paul) said they’re expanding their Boston casual-dining spot, Wahlburgers. (If I were Donnie, I would be more excited about introducing Wahlburgers to casual dining fans throughout

North America than being engaged to Jenny McCartney. But that’s just little ol’ pro-vaccination me.) “These are the next steps in building Wahlburgers into a great and enduring worldwide brand,” said Mark Wahlberg in a statement. The expansion plans include Boston, Philadelphia and Toronto, where it will be renamed Wahlburg-ehs (just kidding, Canada!).

Valerie Star of Caravan Stylist Studio taught us how to create trendy hairstyles that will stay put under a helmet. Star likes to start all hairdos with a dry shampoo, like Sexy Hair’s Volumizing Dry Shampoo, and a beach spray for texture. The dry shampoo adds volume and keeps hair looking fresh after a long day of sweaty cycling. Here are her stepby-step tutorials on chic styles you can do at home before you go riding.

FAMILY DRAMA I’m stumped: My mother and my long-time partner went out for mani/pedis. When my girlfriend came home, she said my mother let it drop that she’s angry that my father no longer romances her or shows emotions. What, if anything, should I do? I want to help, but I’m pretty sure it’s none of my business — and it’d be awkward as hell.

Your question is actually about three couplings: mom and dad, mom and your girlfriend, mom and you. We have varying degrees of love, commitment, trust and (over)sharing with the people in our lives. It can be painful to discover that one, or both, of your parents is suffering. You are a good son who wants to help your mom, but you don’t want to delve too deep into a chat about her sexytime with dad. Here is my advice:

Phone app. Just the ladies on Dattch Robyn Exton, founder of Dattch, has hit it big in the U.K. with her new womenonly dating app. Unlike other apps, like Tinder or Grindr, Dattch users create Pinterest-like profiles with visual boards of their interests and personal photos. Now, Dattch has made it across the pond into the U.S. The app just launched in San Francisco, and Exton plans to release it in other U.S. cities in the next few months. We spoke with Exton about what makes Dattch so special. What does Dattch mean? Dattch, in its short version, means “date catch.” When did you come up with the idea for the app? The idea originally came

up about two years ago now. I had been working at a branding agency and was working with a dating business and I found the space really interesting. I got the idea for it and spent the next six months building a bootstrap fund and saving money for it. I quit my job a year and a half ago. How did you come up with the idea? I was in a pub with a friend and she had broken up with a girlfriend. She didn’t want to use a dating site and we said, “Get over it — everyone does it.” As we went through the process, we thought, “This is terrible. We use these products we don’t even like. It’s a hugely missed opportunity not to use a product people actually like and want to use.” Is your app geared only toward lesbians? It’s geared toward women. Sixty percent of our user

Why did you go with such a visual concept?

We did that because we had an exclusively female community for the very first time and we wanted to see how women wanted to use our app. During our beta tests we found that when we were using structures that were similar to other dating products, it just didn’t work. The way women behave when they’re dating is different, so we built based on what we were seeing and learning. ANDREA PARK

Horoscope

Aries | March 21-April 20. Others will seek your help today. Take the time to listen to their problems, even if you can’t provide a solution.

Cancer | June 21-July 22. Children in your life will be quite observant today. Take time to listen to what they’re saying.

Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22. Your budget will suffer if you purchase expensive gifts. Concentrate on earning money rather than spending it, and offer support, not cash, to others.

Capricorn | Dec. 22-Jan 20. You’ll make an impression with your public speaking skills. An offer of a leadership position is likely to come your way.

Bag tax is just excuse for revenue Regarding the latest proposal to charge 10 cents for plastic grocery bags, if the City Council and Public Advocate are sincere about reducing waste (rather than just seeking a new stream of revenue which we all know is the case), they’d be better off instead passing a law banning excessive packaging, which is about 50,000 percent more of our trash output than plastic bags are. If they don’t, they’re only trying to create a bag tax to siphon more cash out of us. And of course I reuse all my plastic bags for trash, like most people do, so there is no waste at all produced by them.

Taurus | April 21-May 21. You will be able to perform at an amazing level today. Your value will be noticed if you mix work with pleasure. Take advantage of any social invitations.

Leo | July 23-Aug. 22. Enlist friends and family to help with home improvements. Renovations will be more expensive than anticipated, but you will be pleased with the results.

Scorpio|Oct. 23-Nov. 21. Refrain from bringing work problems home. Let minor irritations slide. Your health and family relationships are more important.

Aquarius | Jan. 21-Feb 18. Keep your thoughts to yourself at work. Wait for a more favorable time to make any requests of your superiors — right now, just stick to doing your work.

Gemini | May 22-June 20. Share your goals with your superiors. If they don’t know what you want, you won’t get the opportunities to advance.

Virgo | Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Someone from your past will make an unexpected return. Don’t let stressful situations eat away at you.

Sagittarius | Nov. 22Dec. 21. Make commitments for the right reasons. Don’t sign on for something you don’t believe in to gain acceptance.

Pisces | Feb. 19-March 20. Joining a social group will introduce you to new and interesting people. Have some fun, let loose and enjoy life. BERNICE BEDE OSOL

If we look at that number as a date (2-17-1956), it turns out to be the date of the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. A very interesting choice indeed. EXAMINING NEXT YEAR’S NBA STUDS The horse has already left the barn on guys like Anthony Davis, Kyle Lowry and Isaiah Thomas. There will be no value in them next year. But before we put the season to bed, it’s worth thinking about next year’s breakouts while they’re fresh in our mind. The key thing we’re looking for is an uptick in playing time coupled with a roto-friendly game. That means “hidden” assets, like field-goal percentage, steals or blocks.

Report: Giants sign Freeman The Giants added a veteran backup for Eli Manning with the signing of former Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman on Wednesday. Manning underwent surgery on his left ankle just last week, but he is expected to be ready to begin working out again in four to six weeks. He has started 151 consecutive games, the third-longest streak by a QB ever. Freeman was a first-round draft pick by the Bucs in 2009, but showed only occasional glimpses of talent.
