First month of late-night weekend T nets 72K rides Night riders. MBTA passengers will either use it or lose it when it comes to late nights. Though transit officials are satisfied with the turnout for the first month of late-night weekend MBTA service, they will be keeping an eye on whether passengers continue utilizing the extended hours over the next 48 weekends. Some 72,057 people took the subway between 12:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. in the last four weekends since a pilot program launched on March 28. “The MBTA is pleased to see that tens of thousands of people took advantage of the subway’s extended-service hours during the first month of the year-long pilot program,” T spokesman Joe Pesaturo said. The most recent ridership data, which is through February, shows the total average light-rail ridership to

be 161,300 on Saturdays and 109,000 on Sundays. Under the one-year program, the last trains depart downtown stations at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday mornings and approximately 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday. The extended hours followed calls for public transportation to remain open later so Bostonians can work and play into the early morning hours. More than 18,000 people rode the system during the inaugural weekend of late-night service, but those ridership numbers dipped on Easter weekend, with just 15,322 transit riders opting to ride the subway. “The MBTA will continue to collect data over the next 11 months, and examine the ridership trends and patterns that develop and emerge,” Pesaturo said.

Hoax. Student arrested for UMass bomb threats

Arraignment. DA says men beat homeless man

A University of Massachusetts Boston student was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly making multiple bomb threats that prompted the evacuation at some of the campus buildings. Dean Beckford, a 29-yearold senior from Somerville, was arrested by UMass Boston police, the university said in a statement. He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on Wednesday and was ordered held on $20,000 cash bail. The threats occurred within days after the anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings. They were called in on April 17 and April 22. The university said that in both incidents, calls were received at the dean’s office at about 12:45 p.m. that indicated Wheatley Hall was in imminent danger of an explosion in the building. In both cases, no explosive devices were found.

Two former college football players pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to severely beating a homeless man in Allston and only stopping when a passerby put herself between the men and the victim, authorities said. Former Boston College player Craig Parsons, 22, of West Newton, and former Marist College quarterback Anthony Varrichione, 23, of Medway, were arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court. BU coach steps down amid bullying allegations Boston University women’s basketball head coach Kelly Greenberg has stepped down after allegations that she bullied four scholarship players into quitting and drove one player to have suicidal thoughts. The resignation, which is effective immediately, came after a review panel formed in March to investigate the players’ claims found that Greenberg’s conduct was inconsistent with university standards. Greenberg, who just wrapped up her 10th season as head coach, confirmed the decision Wednesday in a statement to BU Today. “I do not agree with some

of the findings of the review panel regarding my coaching style, which was intended to produce well-rounded athletes and a winning team. However, given all that has transpired, I do not believe that it will be possible for me to continue as an effective coach at Boston University,” said Greenberg. The panel found that “a compelling case was made” based on interviews with the team that the way Greenberg interacted with many players was “incompatible with the expectations and standards for university employees,” including coaches. Sophomores Dionna Joynes told the Boston Globe that she felt suicidal after Greenberg called her an uncaring and selfish teammate after she suffered a concussion. The U.S. Justice Department laid out new clemency guidelines on Wednesday that are expected to make thousands of drug offenders eligible for a reduction in the sentences they are currently serving. Under the new guidelines, inmates that were sentenced under laws that have since changed, who have served at least 10 years of their sentence and are nonviolent, may be re-examined by the Justice Department and suggested to the president for clemency. Deputy Attorney General James Cole, who announced the details of the plan, said the most obvious candidates for review were those sentenced before a 2010 law that lowered the terms for crack cocaine possession charges. “These older, stringent punishments that are out of line with sentences imposed under today’s laws erode people’s confidence in our criminal justice system,” Cole said at a news conference on Wednesday. Under U.S. law, the president can reduce sentences or pardon Americans serving

sentences for federal crimes, though the power has historically been used on a case-bycase basis. Should President Barack Obama grant clemency to each new eligible inmate, the move would be an unprecedented use of clemency power. The Justice Department estimates thousands of inmates may be eligible for review. The clemency review is part of Attorney General Eric Holder’s “Smart on Crime” initiative. It’s a review of the criminal justice system, seeking ways to make spending on prisons more efficient by focusing on violent offenders. REUTERS

Bridge over troubled deals

‘Bridgegate’ scandal threatens next World Trade Center tower The “Bridgegate” scandal that rocked New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s administration earlier this year is threatening a deal that would allow developer Larry Silverstein to finish building the next World Trade Center skyscraper. Silverstein needs a guarantee from the Port Authority of

New York and New Jersey to secure a $1.2 billion construction loan for 3 World Trade Center. On Wednesday, the agency’s board will vote on whether to approve that guarantee, part of a deal that would provide hundreds of millions of dollars more to the Port Authority and allow it to foreclose on the $2.4 billion tower if Silverstein cannot pay debt service costs. But Silverstein’s deal, even with the concessions to the Port Authority, has become entangled in a fierce debate

within the agency over its mission, including whether it should be in the real estate business at all. Those questions have emerged since the so-called Bridgegate scandal erupted earlier this year. Operatives loyal to Christie’s administration caused massive traffic jams on the George Washington Bridge in September, an alleged act of political retribution against a local New Jersey mayor who did not endorse Christie for reelection. President seeks to ease doubts of U.S. allies in Asia during Japan visit Beijing wary. China has criticized U.S. policy in the region as a calculated scheme to cage the rapidly developing Asian giant. President Barack Obama used a state visit to Japan on Thursday to try to reassure Tokyo and other Asian allies of his commitment to ramping up U.S. engagement in the region, despite Chinese complaints that Washington’s real aim is

to contain Beijing’s rise. It was unclear whether a last-ditch round of talks between U.S. and Japanese negotiators would yield a breakthrough on a two-way trade pact seen as crucial to a broader trans-Pacific agreement that Obama has championed. The challenge for Obama during his week-long, fournation tour will be to convince Asian partners that Washington is serious about its promised strategic “pivot” toward the region, while at the same time not harming ties with China, the world’s second-biggest economy. Snafu. New York police Twitter campaign flooded with negative tweets A New York Police Department campaign to burnish its image via social media instead produced a flood of pictures of apparent police brutality. They were accompanied by critical tweets and shared at a rate of thousands an hour. Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said on Wednesday he would continue and expand the NYPD Twitter campaign a day after it backfired, triggering an outpouring of negative images, including police violence at Occupy Wall Street demonstrations, an NYPD officer pointing a gun at a dog and an officer asleep in a subway car. “The reality of policing is that oftentimes our actions are lawful, but they look awful,” Bratton told a news briefing at New York City Hall. “Most of those photos that I looked at are old news,” said Bratton, appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio to take over from Ray Kelly, who served for 12 years under Michael Bloomberg.

The department on Tuesday afternoon invited Twitter users to submit pictures of themselves with NYPD cops using the hashtag #mynypd, promising some would be posted to the NYPD Facebook page. Within hours, a torrent of images depicting police brutality, violence and controversial tactics, most of which occurred under Kelly, deluged Twitter. Some of the images and tweets referred to the fatal, controversial New York police shootings of Sean Bell in 1999 and Amadou Diallo in 1999. REUTERS

We walk because… The faces and stories behind The Walk for Hunger Each Walker, Volunteer, and Sponsor that makes up the crowd has their own unique reason for being a part of the Walk. Some care about a particular program, like the Chefs in Schools Initiative which makes school food healthy and tasty. Others have had a difference made in their lives by the work Project Bread does, many through the FoodSource

Hotline which takes 46,000 calls each year from those in need. Some feel compelled to speak for those who aren’t being heard, and others want to help change the conversation about hunger. Hunger is a complex problem and the thousands of Walkers who participate on Sunday, May 4, recognize that there are multiple solutions.

I walk because everyone deserves to eat farm-fresh, healthy food.

We walk because Project Bread helps families get the food they need.

“What Project Bread does might not be something you need or that helps you, but it helps others— and you never know when things might change for you, either,” says Clement Thompson, the field supervisor at Farmer Dave’s in Dracut. “You can help a lot of people who just want to do good.” Project Bread is proud to support the CSA program at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, where local families can use their SNAP cards to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables from Farmer Dave’s.

Students and teens are a huge part of the Walk for Hunger community: they raise money and volunteer to make a big difference each year. “I volunteered—I like to do stuff to help, and I just loved the whole experience. It was great to know I was helping people do the Walk, and still contributing to ending hunger myself, too,” says Ava. The Walk needs 2,000 Volunteers like Ava to make the Walk a safe and fun event.

Tinder hacks from a master Tinder ninja. James Hawver says he gets about 50 matches a day on Tinder. James Hawver, 29, is an online dating master on both OkCupid (he was profiled in New York Magazine for having one of the most popular OkCupid profiles) and on Tinder. What qualifies him as a Tinder ninja? Well, Hawver says he gets 50 matches a day. “I literally delete 96 to 97 percent of the matches,” he admits. The Manhattan-based real estate agent gave us his tips on putting your best Tinder foot forward:

“Like” a lot of things on Facebook. Hawver says liking a lot of pages on Facebook increases the number of talking points and common interests you have with other Tinder users. “I like restaurants, I like authors, I like publications.

Do talk to strangers. Romance can blossom in unexpected places. When Carol Bloom Stevens traveled into Manhattan to meet a headhunter after graduating from college, she had no idea Cupid was gearing up to strike. Her future husband, Mark Stevens, was en route to see a client at the same time. Moments before their Yonkers train pulled into Grand Central Station, he broke the ice with a simple question: What time is the train going to arrive? They spoke briefly and, moments later, he got her digits. “I guess he wasn’t going to leave it up to fate whether or not he would see me again,” she recalls. Three months later, they were engaged — and three months after that, they walked down the aisle.

The two celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary next January and they have two sons, now in their 30s; it’s proof that everlasting love can strike anywhere and at any time. Marina Margulis, CEO and founder of New York Socials, says that now is the ideal time to break the pattern of missed connections. Instead of being shy, channel that boldness like Mark did in June of 1974. “Remember, fear is temporary,” says Margulis. “Regret lasts forever.” (And then it lives online at Missed Connections on Craigslist.) No left swipes “I pretty much swipe right to everyone,” says Hawver. “The only thing I sort of pay attention to while I swipe right pretty fast is if I have a Facebook friend in common with the person. Then I’ll stop and see who our mutual friend is. I don’t want to swipe right to just anyone who I have a Facebook friend in common with in case I don’t really want to chat with that person.” Hawver says swiping right is easier than being selective: “I at least know that the majority of the people I’m matching with are willing to talk to me so I can decide yes or no pretty quickly. ... I don’t want to take the time to look back and forth and figure out if I want to talk to someone if there’s no chance of the person responding to me.”

off at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival earlier this month. The singer mulls over the fantasy film for a moment and thinks the alternative rocksoaked soundtrack would be very cool. An entirely very different musical era influenced the fun video for Cage the Elephant’s latest single, “Take it or Leave It.” The sultry Latininfluenced pop song — taken from last fall’s “Melophobia” album — is the backing music for a late 1970s roller disco. “I was watching ‘American Hustle’ with my wife and we were amazed at the clothes,” says Shultz. “Those polyester suits and shiny silk shirts. And Brown ---- everyone is wearing brown.” “What were they thinking?” we marvel. Still, the band decided it was the perfect setup for the video, which features actress/singer Juliette Lewis, an old friend the band met when they were living in London some years ago. “I did a little research and found the roller disco movie

‘Skatetown USA,’ Patrick Swayze’s first movie. I thought. ‘That’s it, that’s the look!’” Shultz adds. Disco is also far-removed from the classic rock influences Cage the Elephant grew up on in Kentucky. “Melophobia,” a title which means fear of music, sees the band expanding its sound with a patchwork of pop, garage rock, glitter rock and, yes, maybe a touch of disco. Just a touch. According to Schultz, though the band has grown into itself, Cage the Elephant has not yet found a signature sound. Fearless when it comes to music, Schultz hopes they never do. “I hope we never get comfortable with a particular sound and stay there,” he says. “I’d say we’re comfortable with the process, but as far as a sound, I hope that keeps changing with each album.” LINDA LABAN @MetroBOS linda.laban@metro.us

REVAMPED AUDUBON IS BACK IN ACTION Having been a longtime fan of Trina’s Starlite Lounge in Inman Square, one of my only complaints about the place is that there’s only one location. The rebranding of Audubon Boston, just outside of Kenmore Square, doesn’t entirely remedy that, but since it’s from the same operating team, it will have to do. The owners of Trina’s recently took over the space formerly known as Audubon Circle, and although it won’t have the same neo-dive feel, they plan to transform it into the type of neighborhood spot with the tricked-out comfort food, craft beer and cocktails that they’re well-known for. They already know the space well; in fact, it’s where two of the co-owners, Beau Sturm and J Bellao, met while working together years ago. “I was 20 and I got hired here by Beau,” Bellao says. “He was the general manager, and he hired me as a bar back, washing dishes and working the door, and one thing lead to another. I just loved it here. ... The area is wonderful, and the neighborhood is up-and-coming. We’re trying to institute the same kind of neighborhood, everybody’swelcome vibe we have over at Starlite, just in another neighborhood.” In part, that means carry-

the plan is to expand beyond the basics. Among the new bartenders is Tyler Wang, recently of Kirkland Trotter and Tap and formerly of No. 9 Park. His Fire in the Orchard cocktail — made with apple brandy, mezcal, pear liqueur, Lillet, lemon and agave — is one of the standouts on the menu. Elsewhere, they’ve pulled from classic cocktail tomes for inspiration, highlighting standbys such as the Hanky Panky, made with gin, sweet vermouth and Fernet Branca, and The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Cocktail with aged rum, orange liqueur, velvet falernum and lime. “Our current cocktail list is an educational program for all of us,” Bellao says. “Maybe before the place wasn’t necessarily a cocktail destination but a place to come in, have a beer, a glass of wine and cheap bites. Now we want the cheap bites, but we also want to be up to par with anything in the area. We’re never going to be Eastern Standard or Hawthorne — they’re the best — but there’s no reason we can’t have fun and make some rad cocktails.”

Bruins greedy for another day of domination NHL. The B’s seem to be in full control of their series with Detroit, despite only being up one game. Boston’s 3-0 shutout of Detroit in Game 3 on Tuesday was a near-perfect road victory in the NHL playoffs. The Bruins used timely scoring, outstanding team defense and goaltending by Tuukka Rask (23 saves in his fourth career postseason shutout) to take a 2-1 series lead over the Red Wings. They regained the home-ice advantage that they lost in Game 1 and picked up their second-straight win while setting up a vital Game 4 on Thursday (8 p.m., NESN). So far in the series, Boston has outscored Detroit, 7-2, including a 7-1 mark over Games 2 and 3. Rask will get the lion’s share of the credit, not a stunning thing for a player that should win the Vezina Trophy. But hockey is a team game, and when Boston is playing well, it gets contributions from everyone.

In a groove Game 4 of the Bruins-Red Wings series is Thursday (8 p.m., NESN) in Detroit: •

The Red Wings had just 24 shots on goal in Game 1 and just 23 in Game 3.

“That’s part of our defensive game,” said Bruins head coach Claude Julien. “We have a lot of trust in each other and guys aren’t afraid to block shots. To be good defensively, you have to have a team commitment.” Rask has been the single most dominant player in the first three games as the Red Wings have only scored on him twice. Once, he was

screened on Pavel Datsyuk’s shot, and the other came off of Luke Glendening’s body. Rask didn’t have to do too much heavy lifting in Game 3, except for a highlight-reel stop on Justin Abdelkader in the third period when Detroit was trying to cut it to 2-1. He’s stopped 82-of-84 shots for an absurd goals against average of 0.67. Offensively, the Bruins have been getting superb efforts from their younger players. Remarkably, Jarome Iginla, Brad Marchand, David Krejci and Loui Eriksson — among others — have yet to find the back of the net for Boston. That has to be scary for the Red Wings since you know that won’t hold for much longer. Finally, the B’s have extra incentive to eliminate Detroit as fast as possible since Montreal swept Tampa Bay on Tuesday and now the Canadiens await the winner of Boston-Detroit. Needless to say, both teams want to get in one parting shot before the true shape of the 2014 season forms. In the series finale at Fenway Thursday, the Yankees will send CC Sabathia (2-2, 5.19 ERA) to the mound to square off against Sox hurler Felix Doubront (1-2, 5.48 ERA). Doubront took the loss

in the Sunday night game at Yankee Stadium 11 days ago, a game in which Sox manager John Farrell was ejected for arguing against a replay ruling. It was a tough loss to take for Doubront, who pitched relatively well, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing three earned runs on seven hits. Sabathia has struggled in the early going of this season and took a loss to the Red Sox in the Bronx on April 11.
