Effort to rescue animals knows no boundaries Saved. As part of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, Metro shadowed the Animal Rescue League.

From the ground, Danielle Genter could hear the cries of a cat about 30 feet above her in an old tree. Genter, an Animal Rescue League of Boston rescue team member, bent down, carefully aiming and stretching her specialized slingshot in an attempt to send a weighted rope into the tree that she might have to climb to reach the cat. Genter let go. The weight attached to the rope shot up with such force that it snapped the weak tree branches and eventually became tangled. It also evidently startled the cat, which climbed even higher. The tree branches, Genter determined, wouldn’t be able to support her and she would have to find another way to reach the animal, which had been there about four days. Whether it’s climbing scores of feet up a tree to reach a frightened cat, kayaking through a pond to an injured seagull or wading through inches of animal feces to rescue hoarded pets, the Animal Rescue League does it. Last year the rescue team, a group of five ARL employees who respond to calls for animals in need of help or surrender, assisted more than 3,400 animals. Brian O’Connor, the manager of ARL’s rescue services, said every day is different; team members don’t know what the calls will be or where they will take place. The team last year responded to calls in 181 different cities and towns across Massachusetts. “Sometimes we come in and we’re dealing with hoarding cases, other times we’re trying to chase around injured animals,” O’Connor said. “We never really know which way the day is going to go when we start, but we’re always ready for anything.” The nonprofit’s dedicated rescue team is called in when local animal-control officers

Embattled leader steps down as DCF preps for reform Resignation. Olga Roche has ended her year-long leadership of the scrutinized child protection agency. Citing a lack of public confidence in her leadership ability, the head of the Department of Children and Families has stepped down. Health and Human Services Secretary John Polanowicz on Tuesday announced that Commissioner Olga Roche, who has worked in social services for 33 years, resigned amid emphatic calls from lawmakers that she vacate the post.

Roche / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO

Gov. Deval Patrick said he thinks it’s “impossible for her to do the job that we’ve asked her to do in this environment. Whenever or whatever she does still causes folks to call for her resignation.’’ Calls for Roche’s resignation were sparked by evidence suggesting that DCF mismanagement may have contrib-

uted to the deaths of three children under the agency’s watch. SEIU Local 509 spokesman Jason Stephany said Roche’s departure paves the way for DCF reforms and investments. “At DCF, we face a case load crisis that worsens each day,” said Stephany. “Policy changes and accountability measures are desperately needed. Communication barriers and outdated technology continue to slow our efforts in the field.” DCF’s Deputy Commissioner Erin Deveney will lead in the interim until a permanent replacement is hired. Kicked out. NBA bans Clippers owner Sterling for life after racist remarks The NBA banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life Tuesday, an unprecedented move in the league’s history, after he was reportedly recorded making racist remarks. Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices going forward. “Shortly after the release of an audio recording, the NBA commenced an investigation and that investigation is now complete, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said at a press conference Tuesday. “The hateful opinions [on the tape] are those of Mr. Sterling. The views expressed by Mr. Sterling are deeply hurtful. Sterling’s ownership of the Clippers has been under a microscope since late last week, when TMZ Sports released audio of Sterling telling female friend V. Stiviano that he does not want her to bring black people to games. “It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people,

Sterling allegedly was heard saying on the tape. “You can sleep with [black people]. You

Kimye will be married this week

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West will be wed in a very small, private ceremony with a justice of the peace in Los Angeles this week. Yes, yes, yes — the lavish Parisian celebration is still taking place. But before that happens, their lawyers are recommending they be hitched in a civil ceremony to avoid going through an international bureaucratic nightmare. After they say “I do” in court, they will then fly to Paris to plan their wedding. Get your suits and dresses dry-cleaned now — it’s reported that party goes down on May 24.

J.J. Abrams revealed the cast for “Star Wars: Episode VII” yesterday on StarWars.com. They all look cozy doing a table read of the script. You can spot the OG’s — Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C3P0), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), and Kenny Baker (R2D2) — but there are some fresh faces scattered in there as well. So just who are these upstarts? “Inside Llewyn Davis” star Oscar Isaac made the cut,

as well as Andy Serkis, who is probably best known as Gollum in “The Lord of the Rings.” “Girls” actor Adam Driver, “Attack the Block”’s John Boyega, Domhnall Gleeson from “In Time” and Daisy Ridley from “Blue Season” will also be making an appearance. We’re looking forward to the press conference where Harrison Ford publicly hugs Chewbacca, and they fully put their differences aside.

TELEVISION

‘Vampire’ finale will freak you out Ian Somerhalder has played vampire Damon Salvatore on the CW’s “The Vampire Diaries” for five years, and he has an idea for what his character can do next: Stop climate change. “I’ve already been here for 200 years, and I’m going to be here for another millennium — I might as well try and preserve this place. Things are just going to get worse,” says Somerhalder of what his character should be thinking. It’s a cause close to the actor’s heart. He recently participated in “Years of Living Dangerously,” Showtime’s documentary series that focuses on individual attempts to halt climate change. Each episode follows a celeb as he or she learns about those efforts. But that doesn’t mean the actor has left his day job. He enjoyed revisiting Damon’s

For someone who oozes rock star magnetism, Tilda Swinton is very approachable and friendly. She’s upbeat even when discussing something as potentially grim as “Only Lovers Left Alive,” Jim Jarmusch’s oddball vampire movie. In it she plays Eve, a 5,000-year-old bloodsucker in a committed relationship with Tom Hiddleston’s Adam, a brooding musician who is 4,500 years her junior.

On death “I think that any piece of work that’s about immortality is essentially about mortality. Any discussion about immortality will be about how we’re all in a cul-de-sac.

It’s coming for us all. It’s even coming for [Eve and Adam], sooner or later. I mean, the stars are coming down, eventually. Even in another 2,000 years, it will all end.”

On the film as a positive relationship movie “We wanted to show a long relationship between people who were really communicative with each other and really, really into each other. They’re good for each other, so when one of them gets down, the other one can really help. That just feels real, and it feels previously unexplored. We’re always seeing relationships start or we see them end. But we rarely see them just play out.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

An odd couple

On her on-screen lover “Adam is [struggling with his] immortality. He wants a way out. He wants to go. It’s too much for him. And [Eve] manages to retain her perspective, not by just surviving, but by

being so wired into nature. Nature is constantly dying and being renewed. She’s able to have that perspective because she totally accepts death. I would suggest that the more one accepts that death is on its way, the more relaxed one can be and forget about it.”

The dirt on how to clean

+ PLUS

In the bedroom

Banish the dust mites Dellutri’s mite-free prescription:

1 2

Wash all of your bedding.

Step one

Start here Dellutri suggests manning up and tackling the garage. “A lot of people use the garage as the entrance to their homes — it’s just the way it is nowadays,” she says. “So get it clean: It’s the gateway to your house and the dirtiest part of your house.” Her decluttering rule of thumb? Toss everything (as in, everything) you haven’t used in at least two years. The garage is a good place to start your spring-cleaning frenzy. / FUSE

Spring cleaning. We don’t like it any more than you do, but it’s time. We’re not sure who decided that the Advent of spring means setting aside a beautiful weekend to wipe down baseboards and dust light fixtures. But as there’s no escaping spring cleaning — or the guilt of skipping it — we consulted Laura Dellutri, author of books such as “White Couch With Kids!?” and “Speed Cleaning 101” for her best tips.

Three quick cleans Have 10 minutes? Dellutri recommends knocking out these tasks.

1 2

Disinfect your light switches.

Place disposable liners in your fridge to make cleanup quicker.

3

Rub lemon oil on your shower doors so soap scum won’t build up.

MONICA WEYMOUTH @metronewyork letters@metro.us

Break it down If you can’t bring yourself to set aside an entire sunny Saturday, Dellutri suggests dedicating 30 minutes of a weekday to spring cleaning, dusting the furniture, organizing kitchen cabinets, Windexing windows or deep cleaning the bathroom before the weekend.

LAURA DELLUTRI IS DOING HER BEST TO MOTIVATE YOU TO CLEAN. PROVIDED

Put little hands to work Kids are eager to please, respond well to bribes and like gadgets. “Don’t say, ‘I’ll just do it myself.’ You’re already not doing it yourself,” reasons Dellutri. “Train the kids, and make it fun — sing songs and plan a kid ‘date night’ after.” On her list of kid-friendly chores: hosing down the deck (or anything involving the hose), wiping out low kitchen cabinets and dusting railings.

Buy a mattress cover designed to keep out dust mites. Tape over the zipper so they can’t pry their way in.

3

Put pillows in plastic bags and place them in the freezer. Dust mites die in the cold.

And just like Katniss and Co. readied themselves for battle, you, too, will have to train your body (and your mind!) if you attempt to take on an obstacle race this year. We got advice for both first-timers and experienced pros from Nolan Kombol, head designer of the Tough Mudder course. For the sake of this story, just call him Plutarch Heavensbee.

For the newbies

1

Believe that you can do it. “That’s the first challenge,” Kombol says. “I’ve met so many people who said, ‘I was scared to do a Tough Mudder.’ But they tried it anyway and then said, ‘You know, I lost 40 pounds to do this thing, and then I did it. And I was so happy with myself.’ It’s about committing and planning goals for yourself.”

2

Prepare — to an extent. You can do lifts, pull-ups, squats and other traditional moves in or out of the gym, “but there will be certain parts of the course that stretch you and pull you in different ways,” he says. Start your training a month or two before the event with body-weight exercises — those will prep you the best, he says. “It’s about being

prepared for different kinds of movements.”

3

Hydrate. Your belly should have a little food in it right before your race, but you want to start hydrating well in advance. “I think that’s a common mistake among athletes — not realizing that this starts the day before,” he says.

4

Be comfy. You’re gonna get cold, and you’re gonna get wet, so be prepared with durable shorts, an undershirt, sunscreen (lots of it, SPF 30 or above) and shoes that’ll weather any terrain. “A lot of first-timers don’t realize just how long you’ll be running through water, through mud, through gravel, through all sorts of tough terrain that actually impacts your shoes,” he says. “It’s nothing like a normal run.”

Tips

Tips

For the experienced

1

Tackle the obstacles that gave you hell. Lose your way on the funky monkey last time? You’re not alone: Roughly 60 percent of firsttimers flail on the slanted monkey bar set over a pit of water. “I think for repeat Mudders, it’s best to set personal challenges for yourself,” he says. For example, you might aim to get across five rungs instead of three rungs this time.

2

Decide to help others. You’ve already kicked butt on this course, so why not

help someone who’s new to it? If your race isn’t timed, you can spare a few minutes to lend a hand. “It’s about spending not just one minute on top of a wall helping the person behind you up — it’s about staying up there for five minutes and helping 20 people up,” he says. Got a competitive streak? Again, make it a game for yourself. “I’ll have little goals for myself, such as, ‘Today I’m going to try to get four people up Everest.’ ‘I’m going to try to get 10 people over Berlin Wall.’ A lot of it is about embracing the camaraderie spirit of what the event is.”

I’ve been largely ignoring the canonization of John Paul II because it matters little to me as a nonbelieving former Catholic. As someone who studied the canonization process in college, however, it bothers me. Typically, the church waits 50 years after a person’s death to even start investigating sainthood. JPII died less than a decade ago. Combined with his poor record on the sex abuse scandal, it’s

MLB power rankings | by Ryan Hannable No. 1

No. 3

The Brewers just keep on rolling, as they’ve won eight of their last 10 games to remain atop the rankings for a third straight week. Although its offense has been good, Milwaukee’s pitching has been especially dominant with the secondbest ERA in baseball at 2.56, trailing only the Braves. The

Brewers will be put to the test this week with seven road games.

No. 2

No. 11

Athletics (16-10)

Rockies (15-12)

Cardinals (14-13)

Known for its offense, Oakland’s pitching and defense has actually led the way to its 16-10 start and the most wins in the American League. The A’s have allowed a league-low 85 runs to this point in the season.

Winners of two straight and seven of its last 10 games, Colorado is one of the hottest teams in the NL, as it has overtaken the Dodgers in the NL West. Their 4.16 team ERA, which is good for 13th in the NL, will need to improve.

St. Louis has slumped a bit as of late, losing six of its last 10 games and allowing the Brewers to open a sizeable lead in the NL Central. Their mark of 3.41 runs per game puts them with the second-worst average in the National League.

No. 4

No. 8

Yankees (15-10)

Mets (14-11)

Phillies (13-12)

All the questions have been answered for the Yankees a month into the season as they sit atop the AL East standings, winners of six of their last 10. The bullpen has actually been a strength so far.

The Mets have won six of their last 10 and are right there at the top of the NL East. They’ve somehow managed to place seventh in the NL in runs per game despite hitting just .218 as a team.

Philadelphia has won two straight and six of its last 10 games but still remains the only team in the NL East with a negative run-differential at minus-10. On the plus side, the Phils have hit .259 as a team.

No. 5

No. 13

No. 9

Rangers (15-11)

Dodgers (14-12)

Tigers (12-9)

It’s been an up-and-down first month for the Rangers, as they’ve had some injuries but have still kept pace with the A’s. Texas’ pitching has delivered, as the Rangers are above the league average in multiple categories.

Offense has been the issue in Los Angeles this past week, as the Dodgers have scored three runs or fewer four times. They’ve lost six of their last 10 but shouldn’t be down long considering the talent on their roster.

Detroit is beginning to catch fire, winning six of its last 10 games to get atop the AL Central. Their offense has led the charge lately, as they’ve averaged 4.52 runs per game after starting the year in the bottom third.

No. 6

No. 14

No. 10

Braves (17-7)

Giants (15-11)

Nationals (14-12)

White Sox (14-13)

The Braves have won four in a row, and seven of their last 10 to distance themselves a bit from the rest of the NL East. Pitching has led the way as its 2.04 team ERA is the best in the NL by over half a run.

Consistent baseball has been the key for the Giants to start the season as, currently, they sit atop the NL West. San Fran doesn’t stand out in any particular category so far; it has simply played steady ball.

The Nats received a big blow this week when news hit that Bryce Harper would be out until at least July with a wrist injury. Nonetheless, Washington is second in the NL in runs per game.

Winners of six of 10, the White Sox have continued their hot start by getting it done at the plate. Chicago has scored a league-leading 150 runs. They’re also 9-5 at home this season.

MLB. Rays, Red Sox both attempting climb back to .500 record The Rays and Red Sox both have plenty of time to climb to the top of the division standings. But with May one day away, there’s some urgency wanted from both squads to put together a substantial win streak. Tampa Bay and Boston, currently both under .500, square off in the second game of a three-game series

Wednesday at Fenway (7 p.m., NESN). Boston will send Felix Doubront (1-3, 6.00 ERA) to the mound while the Rays will counter with Chris Archer (2-1, 4.11 ERA). The Sox are in the early stages of an eight-game homestand, as they will also host Oakland this weekend and the Reds next week. MATT BURKE

Bruins using time off to get healthy The Bruins had little trouble dismissing the Red Wings in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs but they could likely use all the help they can get in a second round series against the Canadiens most are predicting to go the distance. Defenseman Dennis Seidenberg, who tore his ACL and MCL in late December, practiced Tuesday, and there are murmurs that he could play in this year’s postseason should the Bruins continue to advance. Rumors of forward Daniel Paille’s return became fact Tuesday as he was medically cleared to play in the upcoming series against Montreal. Paille hasn’t played since April 12 against Buffalo, when he looked to have suffered his third concussion of the season. “I feel unbelievable right now and I want to continue that throughout this week,” Paille told ESPN. “I feel fresh. I’ve been watching the games with the guys that haven’t played and realize how good we’ve been, so it’s definitely positive, especially going into this second round.” MATT BURKE
