Hub to again hold ‘Urban Shield’ public safety drill Preparation. About 2,000 emergency personnel will take part in the 24-hour training exercise. A massive police and emergency response will take place this weekend throughout Boston, but residents need not worry. The city is once again hosting a simulated emergency exercise called “Urban Shield.” The 24-hour simulation will begin Saturday at 8 a.m. “The exercise will assess the
ability of public safety personnel to successfully respond to, and manage, multiple public safety threats and emergencies occurring simultaneously throughout the metro Boston area,” according to a statement released by the city. Residents were advised not to be alarmed by the large public safety response, and that there is no danger to the public. Among the scenarios to take place are: an active shooter in Brookline; a hostage rescue of elected officials in Boston; an explosive device found on the MBTA; an injured officer in Cambridge; a parking lot

About 2,000 personnel from multiple agencies will take part in the training, including Boston police, fire, EMS, public health and emergency management officials. Also taking part are public safety officials from Everett to Quincy, as well as state and MBTA police. “As we saw last year during the Boston Marathon attacks, our first responders are well trained to handle any situation,” Mayor Marty Walsh said in a statement. “Urban Shield:
Boston is a unique training exercise that enables our first responders to work collaboratively in a simulated environment so they can operate effectively in real-world scenarios.” Funding for the event comes from the Department of Homeland Security. Boston hosted an Urban Shield training event two years ago. Former Boston police commissioner Ed Davis recently said the training was used during the marathon bombings. MICHAEL NAUGHTON @MetroBosMike

Police search for child abductor Police on the South Shore are looking for a man who kidnapped a child after school, then dropped him off in a neighboring town. Rockland police released a sketch of the suspected child abductor on Wednesday. The incident took place on Tuesday at about 2:15 p.m.
An expelled state legislator who was convicted of assaulting a former girlfriend was released from a Billerica jail Wednesday, the Middlesex County sheriff’s office said. Carlos Henriquez, a Boston Democrat, was voted out of the House of Representatives in February by a 146-5 vote after a judge ordered him to serve six months of a twoand-a-half-year sentence. On Jan. 15, Henriquez was convicted on two misdemeanor charges of assault and battery stemming from allegations that he kidnapped, backhanded, choked and punched a 23-year-old woman in a rental car in July 2012. The state parole board
granted his early release under the conditions that he wear a GPS monitoring device, The Globe reported. Henriquez has maintained his innocence and is appealing his conviction. At the Feb. 6 vote, Henriquez told House members, “I used to think that the good of many outweighs good of the few. Now I wonder at what cost. “An innocent man does not plead, and an innocent man does not quit,” he said. Before the vote, the NAACP called on the House not to expel Henriquez, saying he had not violated any House rules with his conviction. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

Fundraiser set for Keytar Bear after reported attacks Street performer. An event to help out the anonymous musician is set for next week. Boston’s beloved Keytar Bear has reportedly been attacked. But before you pack up and move out of the Hub after hearing of such heartlessness, know that there’s still good to be found. Fundraisers have been set up to support the seemingly ubiquitous musical bear who was recently attacked twice, according to Vanyaland. The website reported that the anonymous musician was punched while out performing. “It completely blew my
mind that someone would be mean to him. I just want him to be able to go out there and not be afraid to play his music and make people happy,” said Abigail Taylor, who recently started an online fundraiser and organized an event to help Keytar Bear. The street performer’s identity is a mystery to many, but he is known throughout Greater Boston, having set up his simple shop outside Park Street and Government Center MBTA stations and even in front of the Old State House. Taylor’s Indiegogo campaign for Keytar Bear raised more than $3,200 in one day. Taylor, who works for Workbar in Central Square, also organized a fundraiser at the coworking space scheduled for May 8. She said

NBA owners likely to force Sterling to sell Removing Sterling. The board’s advisory finance committee will hold a meeting today to go over the next steps. The National Basketball Association’s 29 team owners will likely vote to force Donald Sterling to sell the Los Angeles Clippers after he was banned for life for racist comments, some of the owners said on Wednesday. As it appeared more likely the team would be put up for sale, talk show host turned media businesswoman Oprah Winfrey emerged among potential buyers who have expressed interest. She said she was in discussions with producer and film studio executive David Geffen and Oracle Corp. computer technology Chief Executive Officer Larry Ellison to bid for the team if

$2.5 million and also asked the league’s governing board of fellow owners to act immediately to force Sterling to sell the club he bought 33 years ago. V. Stiviano is v. saddened by Sterling’s ouster V. Stiviano might be many things (namely, an artist, lover, writer, chef, poet, stylist and philanthropist, according to her Instagram), but she is not heartless. Stiviano, who recently gained notoriety as Donald Sterling’s alleged ex-lover, is “very saddened” by the NBA’s decision to place a lifetime ban on Sterling, reports the Los Angeles Times. Her lawyer Mac Nehoray told the Times that Stiviano “never wanted to harm Donald.” He also claimed that Stiviano did not release the recordings and is mortified about the incident. Nehoray said “someone released it for money” — but someone who was not Stiviano. “My client is devastated that this got out,” he told the Times. Nehoray told the Los Angeles Times that he and Stiviano have an idea who the person is. Nehoray stated that

Stiviano, 31, was never in a relationship with Sterling, 80. “It’s nothing like it’s been portrayed,” Nehoray said. “She’s not the type of person everyone says.” He said Sterling’s estranged wife Rochelle was friends with Stiviano and knew that Sterling had purchased an apartment for her.
He also described Stiviano as an upstanding citizen who worked as a waitress and volunteered to help crime victims before starting her job as an archivist for Sterling. V. Stiviano: Artist, lover, writer, chef, poet, stylist, philanthropist, waitress, volunteer and archivist. ANDREA PARK

WHISK MIXES IT UP WITH A WINK AND A NOD Wink & Nod is not your average bar. It’s a classy lounge with super-soothing low lighting, heavy dark woods complemented by red and gold and split-level seating for added mystery. It’s sultry: Think retroHollywood speakeasy. Wink could have been just a bar, however, had they not brought in pop-up restaurant chefs Jeremy Kean and Philip Kruta, whose proposed Whisk JP deal floundered. If you go

Why shouldn’t a bar have great food? Why ruin a good drink with something that’s been thrown in a fryer and sprinkled with pig bits? Kruta and Kean’s debut menu for the collaboration, called Whisk at Wink & Nod, features innovative snacks and small plates, with items such as charred cauliflower with pureed sultanas and corianderspiced yogurt; oysters bathed in pungent smoked orange mignonette and chive oil; and Kalbi short-rib, which pairs melt-in-your-mouth rosy beef medallions with jammy pomegranate and whipped potatoes. Another standout worth noting is the smoked quail yakitori: cherrywood smoked, potted meat served in a Mason jar. Whisk’s pop-up on Hanover Street gave the locals a run for
their money with the best pastas in the North End, including unmissable pappardelle in silky, buttery jus served with a lightly poached egg. At Wink, a soft egg tops off fluffy Scarlett Butter lettuce leaves sprinkled with Stilton cheese and herb “crackling,” aka crushed croutons. For dessert, the Twinkie gets a retread as a freshly made sponge cake filled with homemade hazelnut brown butter cream. In Whisk’s version of the rum baba, a brioche-type pastry is soaked in rum.
Combining drink + dish General Manager Curtis McMillan brought in the chefs at Whisk after becoming a fan of Kean’s and Kruta’s food. McMillan also selected a short old-world wine list that favors strong flavors and chose granny-type crystal glasses for the dining room that people wouldn’t have been caught dead drinking from five years ago. Whisk might build upon its signature tasting menu, but for now, it’s a perfect delight.

The concept of finding a god within one’s self seems to be in the collective consciousness of artists these days: Kanye West goes deeply into it on ‘Yeezus.’ With Kanye, the album before he says he’s Jesus is about complete excess. ... So the next one is a totally different concept. But mine is more of a progression, because it’s like you’re still working on the concept of the name of M.I.A. and what that stands for, and now also about people representing untouchables and people who live in a certain demographic. ... The deity is still somebody who looks and sounds like a woman who goes out there and fights for truth. How did you learn about Matangi? Was it something you heard about growing up? I sort of fell upon it. ... Everything sort of works like that. It’s about your experience and it’s about what you’re doing in the day and the things that concern me in my life. Do you still fly like paper, get high like planes? What? You mean with my lifestyle now? Yeah, sure. It just means different things now. It’s a broader statement. Long-awaited hatred NHL. After an extended break, the Bruins and Canadiens are expected to have an extended series. At long last, the wait is over as the Bruins and Montreal Canadiens finally drop the puck in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Thursday at TD Garden (7:30 p.m., NBCSN). Boston hasn’t played since last Saturday, when it eliminated the Detroit Red Wings in five games. That seems like a long layoff until you remember that the Habs haven’t played since April 22, when they swept the Tampa Bay Lightning. With three Game 7s on Wednesday to conclude the first round of the NHL playoffs, Bruins and Canadiens fans have to be thankful for the break since it ensures this series will be on something of an even
Star power The Bruins and Canadiens will renew their long-standing rivalry in the Eastern Conference semifinals, beginning Thursday at TD Garden. •
Patrice Bergeron and Torey Krug led the B’s with five points each in the first-round victory over the Red Wings while Milan Lucic, Jarome Iginla and Dougie Hamilton each checked in with four points.
•
Young right winter Brendan Gallagher, center Lars Eller and polarizing defenseman P.K. Subban all had five points for Montreal in its sweep of the Lightning in the first round.
•
B’s goaltender Tuukka Rask is just 3-10-3 against the Habs. Montreal goalie Carey Price is 17-8-3 vs. Boston.
playing field. “Montreal had a great series against Tampa, anybody who watched that series recognized that,” Bruins head coach Claude Julien said. “We’re a group right now that feels good about our game, but we have a tough series ahead of us. We respect other teams’ strengths and we also respect our game to the point where we have confidence in it.” It’s a known fact that any game or series against the Canadiens will involve plenty of focus on penalties and power plays since perhaps no team in the NHL is so over-the-top in their tactics to gain a man advantage. The difference this time around is that Boston’s power play is a strength (6-for-16 in the first round) instead of a liability, while Montreal’s looks more questionable (2-for-13 in the first round).
