Probation Dept. hiring scandal trial begins today Jury selection. A pool of jurors will be questioned about their knowledge of the case. A parade of current and former state lawmakers, lawyers and judges could soon head into the federal courthouse in South Boston as the federal corruption trial of the state’s former Probation Department commissioner gets underway today. Jury selection will take place at the Moakley courthouse for the trial of John J. O’Brien. O’Brien and his two deputies

were indicted in 2012 on various charges including racketeering, conspiracy and mail fraud. The prosecution’s recently filed witness list includes the names of more than a dozen current and former state legislators who may be called on to provide testimony on the workings of the state government and hiring system. O’Brien and his deputies, Elizabeth Tavares and William Burke, are accused of instituting a rigged hiring system that employed those who were sponsored by state elected officials over other candidates who were more qualified for the job.

Quoted

“Have you or your spouse/partner ever been responsible for making final decisions on hiring or firing employees?” Question on jury selection form

Prosecutors allege that O’Brien did so in order to increase the department’s budget and their power. All three have pleaded not guilty. The trial has spread across Beacon Hill as some of the

state’s most powerful lawmakers have been named in the details of the indictment and have had to turn over documents. A superseding indictment filed last year identified House Speaker Robert DeLeo and Senate President Therese Murray by title in explaining how O’Brien allegedly worked the system to hire their recommended candidates. Today, a pool of potential jurors will fill out a questionnaire for lawyers and the judge to determine their ability to decide the case. Included on the form that potential jurors will have to complete are questions that ask

if they met, know or formed an opinion of potential witnesses and individuals involved in the case, including DeLeo and Murray. O’Brien led the department until 2010 when he resigned amid questions relating to the patronage scandal. Last year, O’Brien was acquitted of conspiracy charges that alleged he held a fundraiser with probation department employees for then state treasurer Tim Cahill in return for a job for his wife. PROTECT YOURSELF FROM ‘HEARTBLEED’ I received an email from Pinterest telling me that my password may be at risk because of something called Heartbleed. What happened here? Am I at risk? Heartbleed did not just affect Pinterest, it affected many of the most popular sites on the Web. To put it simply, Heartbleed was a glitch in the security systems that most websites use to protect your personal information and passwords. Hackers may have been able to exploit this weakness and collect people’s passwords. This hack has been called “catastrophic” by Internet security experts rts and should be taken seriously. You should not just change your Pinterest password, change your passwords for every website you use and be sure that you are using different passwords for different websites.

JACK’S BACK

Jack Bauer is back to save the world (again.) “24: Live Another Day” premieres tonight at 8 on Fox. / GREG WILLIAMS/FOX

Jack Bauer’s seen better days. Granted, over the eightseason span of the heartstopping Fox drama “24,” he’s seen worse days, too. Suffice to say, the former Counterterrorism agent isn’t in a good place when he returns in the 12-part “24: Live Another Day.” The reboot opens four years after the finale, which found Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) a fugitive from the U.S. He’s being hunted by a CIA agent (Yvonne Strahovski) but comes out of hiding in London for a mission to prevent global disaster. Sutherland was scared to jump back in after a four-year hiatus. “I used to get terrified in between each season,” he admits. “If you go away to do something else, [there’s] the fear of starting up again: Am I being too hard with it, am I being too soft? To open that up again and make 12 episodes and not make them the best 12

8

episodes that we’ve ever made is frightening.” Sutherland’s main concern is letting down fans. But “24” diehards may have a hard time finding fault in the new season: The clock keeps ticking, faces from Jack’s past — including Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) and Audrey (Kim Raver) — return, and producer Howard Gordon leads the charge with a story Sutherland calls “fantastic.” “There’s a great impetus for all of us to create something new with the show, and we’ve done that with a lot of new characters, certainly within the context of the storylines and the political issues,” Sutherland says. “A lot of the dynamics of the characters ... have been shifted by virtue of the circumstances with which we start the show.” For instance: “At the very beginning of this show, [Chloe and Jack] are actually pitted against each other,” Sutherland says. “Any time an actor gets to play something as complex as a past loyalty that is potentially going to be betrayed ... that’s a lot of meat. So it’s a great opportunity for us.” AMBER RAY @MetroBOS

Secrets to being a successful woman in communications Words of wisdom. Five successful women pass on their best advice.

And I really am glad I did that, and yet I wouldn’t give up my job at the same time. So I just say: Fight really hard for what you want. Define it in your own mind and then fight for it.

Some of the most successful women in the field of communications gave us their best advice for making it in the industry at the 2014 Matrix Awards, held last week in New York City.

What advice were you given that you found useful? Back in the ’80s — the dark old days — there was a bunch of young women who got together and the advice we were given was: Nice is a vice. We were told to be a little tougher. But there was also some good advice I didn’t listen to. I wished I would have known when they told me that the high heels would hurt my feet when I got older. Because they really do!

Queen Latifah Musician, actress and TV host

Did you overcome any struggles in your career because you are a woman? I know for sure that there were obstacles I had to overcome being a female in hip-hop. No. 1: It was a male-dominated field, so I had to make a name for myself as a woman in hip-hop. And even then the record labels wouldn’t spend as much money on marketing female rappers as they did on male rappers, so that was another hurdle we had to overcome. It really just made me want to create my own company and not have to work for anyone and be my own boss. I was fortunate to partner with a male, a guy who is the right side of my body. If you see him, you basically see me too. We respected each other’s dreams and goals and supported each other. It should never be an anti-guy thing, but we have to, as women, be pro-woman.

What advice can you give to women who want to succeed in their careers? Try to define it the way you want it to be. Don’t take no for an answer. Look for work you love and then try to shape it the way you want it to be. It takes a lot of pushing back sometimes. But when my daughter was really little, I managed to work part-time by just kicking and screaming and just saying I needed to spend some time with her.

What advice were you given that you found useful? Don’t give up! “MAKERS” is a perfect example of that. Gloria [Steinem] said no, she didn’t want the story of the women’s movement to be told through one person, so I had to rework

it. And then lo and behold, we finally got a yes.

Did you have any struggles to overcome in your career because you are a woman? I think the biggest struggle I had to overcome was myself, knowing that I had a voice. I was afraid. Did my opinion matter? It took me some successes in my career to have that confidence — and I could have saved a lot of years in my career if I had spoken up 10 years ago.

What advice can you give to women who want to succeed in their careers? I would definitely say that you have to believe in yourself. And you have to believe in yourself more than anyone else does. Don’t be afraid to be honest with yourself about what you can and can’t do. It will work for you at the end of the day. The self-love thing is not cliche. It’s real! If you don’t have it, you will not survive. LASSE EMIL KRISTIANSEN @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Go for it

Gloria Steinem Journalist and activist What advice were you given that you found useful? I guess it comes under the general heading of “Do it anyway.” You’re not supposed to go to India by yourself at age 22 when you don’t know anybody there, but do it anyway. You’re not supposed to have your own byline or write a particular kind of piece, but do it anyway. Do you think it’s easier or harder for women to be successful in the workplace today than it was when you started out? It’s much easier. We’ve gone from one token to a minority. But we’re still not 50/50. The people in power have to overcome their prejudices.

Racism isn’t a universal thing

tion that may not include all ethnic groups, but that hardly qualifies as discrimination. The NBA is a private business. The league, commissioner and owners are exercising their right not to associate with an individual who they feel isn’t a good for the league’s image.

Re: ‘Everyone’s a little bit racist’ (Metro, May 2-4) I take exception to reader Althea Garrison’s letter. While it is commendable of Ms. Garrison to admit her own personal racism, she does not have the knowledge or authority to admit anyone else’s. Everyone is not racist. I know this because I am not. Further, I think Ms. Garrison should research the definition of the words “racist” and “discriminate.” We all may very well exercise free associa-

“plantation” mentality that all people of color, including myself, had hoped was over. I define discrimination as subtle as opposed to racism which is blatant and anger driven. Sterling is getting exactly what he deserves. The fact that he’s losing millions in sponsors is more than enough proof. Since the Clippers are almost all black, what other choice did the NBA have?

LARRY D. FOWLER, VIA EMAIL

I thoroughly disagree that “everyone’s a little bit racist.” Almost anyone can have an “issue” with individuals in a specific ethnic group without trampling on the entire race as Sterling did. As Oprah Winfrey said, his is a

B’s use different faces to get familiar results NHL. The Bruins’ younger core has produced and then some so far this postseason. The Bruins have played seven postseason games this spring, and the master playoff stat sheet reveals some interesting things about this Boston team. The old B’s guard is represented, with Milan Lucic leading the team in goals so far with four and Patrice Bergeron leading the team in points with eight. But joining the two veterans at the top of those lists are multiple young’uns, a good sign for Bruins fans in that any particular game can be won by any particular player. This type of deal, with a different hero popping up in nearly every game, paid dividends for the B’s in their run to the Stanley Cup Final last year. Twenty-three-year-old defenseman Torey Krug has been the most notable Bruin to use Hot streak

9

Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban has nine points in six games this postseason, the most of any player in the Eastern Conference. Four of those nine points have come in the first two games against the Bruins.

the 2013 postseason playbook in 2014 as he has registered a point in five of the B’s seven playoff games so far. He’s second on the team in points behind only Bergeron this spring. Hot on Krug’s points trail is fellow defenseman Dougie Hamilton, who has six points in the past 18 days. The 20-year-old’s goal started the Bruins’ thrilling Game 2 comeback on Saturday afternoon as his wrister at 10:56 of the third period cut Montreal’s lead to 3-2. Twenty-three-year-old right winger Reilly Smith has also given the Bruins a lift this spring and has netted third period goals in each of the Bruins first two games against the Canadiens. His wrist shot at the 16:28 mark of Game 2 proved to be the game-winner. “[Smith] plays like a veteran and he’s very calm in those kind of situations, Bruins head coach Claude Julien said. “You don’t see him make too many big mistakes because he’s a smart hockey player, and some guys have it. It’s a knack he’s had from the start. Boston’s young core will look to continue their run up North with Games 3 (Tuesday, 7 p.m., NBCSN) and 4 (Thursday, 7:30 p.m., NBCSN) in Montreal this week.

•

Subban sorry for ‘ducking’ Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban directly apologized to Bruins forward Shawn Thornton for “ducking as Thornton closed in on a hit in the third period of Game 2. Thornton injured his right knee on the play.

Bruins right wing Reilly Smith has had third period goals in each of his last two games.

Bradley Jr. settling in nicely in center in second season

Sophomore surge

10

It’s been a roller coaster of a calendar year, plus a few months, for Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. He made the 2013 Opening Day roster, but lasted less then a month before being sent down to Triple-A — spending the majority of the season there before being called back up in September. He did not make the postseason roster. Fast forward to 2014 and Bradley originally didn’t make the Opening Day roster, as he was beat out by Grady Sizemore, but due to an injury

Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. has looked much more comfortable at the plate this season as he has 10 extra base hits on the season. He had just five in 2013.

to Shane Victorino, he was added to the squad the day the season opened. Since that time, he’s been able to gain a sense of comfort and establish himself as the everyday center fielder. “Every single day you’re going to learn and that’s what I’ve been able to do, especially playing everyday lately,”

CLASSIFIED DIRECTORY

Bradley said. “It’s just learning, the daily grind and getting to know different pitchers and their strengths and weaknesses.” Last season in 37 games, Bradley had a slash line of .189/.280/.337, appearing overmatched at times. In 29 games to open 2014, the 24-year-old is hitting .225/.337/.348, but those numbers don’t tell the whole story as he’s looked much more comfortable at the plate, including totaling 10 extra base hits after having just five a season ago. Sizemore opened the year as the Opening Day center fielder, but a slow start for the former MVP candidate, combined with Bradley’s ex-

ceptional defense, has allowed Bradley to man center 22 of the last 24 games. The Richmond, Virginia native has made plays where he looks like a Gold Glove winner as he reads the ball extremely well off the bat and sprints to where the ball will fall. He’s also showcased a tremendously strong throwing arm, making it difficult for opponents to try and take an extra base on him. “He gets some of the best jumps on balls of anybody I’ve ever seen,” pitcher Clay Buchholz said. “And that’s saying a lot, having [Jacoby Ellsbury] out there for the last couple years. He’s picked us up a lot.” RYAN HANNABLE
