Agent details Tsarnaevs’ actions after bombings New details. Information revealed by an FBI agent on Tuesday may be a preview for what’s to come at Tsarnaev’s trial. Accused Boston Marathon bombers Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother Tamerlan talked multiple times with each other over Skype just two days after allegedly setting off a pair of bombs on Boylston Street and before they allegedly killed an MIT police officer as they sought to flee the area. New details about the investigation into the bombings were revealed by an FBI agent testifying on Tuesday during a motion hearing in the obstruction of justice case of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s friends. Prosecutors called special agent John Walker to the stand in an attempt to prove that questioning Tsarnaev’s friends and searching their apartment was done appropriately and with their consent. Some of the testimony serves as a preview of details that could be used in Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s trial. Walker said that authorities believed the bombs were detonated remotely and that agents were concerned with the use of cell phones by the Tsarnaev brothers. “We were very concerned with regard to phones,” Walker said, adding that the FBI will soon finish a report on how the bombs were con-

structed and operated. “We suspected that phones were used in the general commission of the act of terrorism on [Marathon] Monday.” Walker did not say specifically how exactly the Tsarnaev brothers allegedly used the phones on the day
of the bombings. The Tsarnaev brothers are accused of setting off a pair of pressure cooker bombs at the marathon finish line, killing three people and injuring more than 260 others before allegedly killing an MIT police officer and getting involved in a shoot out with police in Watertown days later. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in the shoot out. His brother was found hours later hiding in a drydocked boat. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges related to the bombings. Walker said that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev subscribed to a cell phone family plan that included four phones. During the April 19, 2013 manhunt for the younger Tsarnaev, authorities were tracking multiple cell phone
Tsarnaev’s three friends can get a fair trial in Boston and there is no need to move the proceedings out of state, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday. Judge Douglas Woodlock denied a motion by defense attorneys to move the trial of Dias Kadyrbayev, Azamat Tazhayakov and Robel Phillipos out of state. Their lawyers argued that an impartial jury would be near impossible to find with all of the media coverage about the bombings. Woodlock said he would have a backup jury on standby at the Springfield divisional court.
tower pings associated with the phones, causing a massive response to New Bedford and eventually the apartment where Tsarnaev’s friends, Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakov, lived. Walker said he received information that a message had been sent to Tsarnaev’s parents in Chechnya from a phone connected to Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Walker said that phone use on Friday morning, hours after Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in the shoot out, pinged off of a tower in New Bedford. Walker did not offer more details about the message. Testimony was expected to continue today. MICHAEL NAUGHTON @MetroBosMike

Mayors excited about liquor license cap lift Gov. Deval Patrick has proposed to eliminate the cap on liquor licenses in communities around the state, and local leaders couldn’t be drunker with delight. Haverhill Mayor James Fiorentini said his border city competes with New Hampshire retailers, and lifting the limits on licenses will be a “great help.” A state official said lifting the cap will eliminate a “hurdle” for businesses seeking access to liquor licenses that are often part of larger economic development projects. Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone appeared with former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino at a legislative hearing in August to testify in favor of eliminating the cap, arguing that restaurant owners find it difficult to locate in Somerville because of a lack of available licenses. Obama: Small window to get immigration reform done this year Top priority. The comments signaled White House hope that reform can still pass this year.
President Barack Obama said on Tuesday there was a small window of opportunity now to pass immigration reform in the House, before Washington’s attention turned completely to the November midterm elections. The comments signaled White House hope that immigration reform, a top priority for the second-term president, still could be passed this year. Obama has been pushing to revise immigration laws and create a pathway to citizenship for some 11 million undocumented residents, but a bill that passed the Democratic-controlled Senate has been stalled in the Republican-controlled House.
Supporters of immigration reform marched from Union Station to The White House on May 1. / GETTY IMAGES
“We’ve got this narrow window. The closer we get to the midterm elections, the harder it is to get things done around here,” Obama told a meeting of law enforcement leaders. “We’ve got maybe a window … of two, three months to get the ball rolling in the House of Representatives.” As he has done before,
Obama said he was willing to compromise on aspects of the bill, but he noted that “some pathway to citizenship” would be needed. “We’re not hell-bent on making sure that every letter of what’s in the Senate bill is exactly what ultimately lands on my desk for signature,” he said. REUTERS
‘Bridgegate.’ Christie aide ‘shocked’ to learn about gridlock scheme New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s spokesman testified on Tuesday he was shocked to learn that some of his former colleagues had organized traffic gridlock last year, apparently to retaliate against a political foe of the likely Republican presidential candidate.
Michael Drewniak, press secretary for the Christie administration, appeared before a bipartisan legislative panel in Trenton probing who was involved in the plan to jam traffic at the George Washington Bridge and why the apparent abuse of power
was able to occur. He told the panel that he had no knowledge or involvement in this “strange, unnecessary and idiotic episode that brought us here today.” The plan was apparently green-lighted by two former Christie appointees. REUTERS

Two health workers at a hospital in Orlando, Florida, who were exposed to a patient with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome have begun showing flu-like symptoms, and one of the two has been hospitalized. Officials at the Dr. P. Phillips Hospital said on Tuesday the two health care workers were exposed to the patient — the second confirmed case of MERS in the U.S. — in the emergency department before it became clear that he might be infected with the often deadly virus. The second health care worker is being isolated in his home and watched for signs of infection. Hospital and local health officials said at a press conference that the MERS patient, also a health-care worker, had made a visit last week to the Orlando Regional Medical Center to accompany another person who was having a medical procedure. Hospital officials said the MERS patient, who works in a hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is doing well and currently has a low-grade fever and a slight cough. Solange vs. Jay Z: The aftermath I’m not going to lie. This item is mostly an excuse to once again watch the amazing footage of Solange Knowles attacking her brother-in-law, Jay Z, after the Met Gala. I know every red-blooded American watched it at least three times on Monday (once when the news broke on TMZ, once when the extended footage came out and once later to point out to your friends how Beyonce just stood there) but it will never be enough. Anyway, Solange evidently was on a bit of a tear all evening. Earlier at the same Met Gala after-party at The Standard hotel, Solange yelled at designer Rachel Roy, sources tell Us Weekly. One source says Beyonce “got in the middle of” her sister’s fracas with Roy; another source said Roy was just one of a group Solange harangued. This still doesn’t tell us what had Solange so riled up. However, she did delete all of her shots of Beyonce from her Instagram account yesterday, save for this one from 2013, with music video director

Interview. Elizabeth Olsen tries out monster movies with ‘Godzilla’ “I wasn’t a big Godzilla person, Elizabeth Olsen confesses. She had seen Roland Emmerich’s campy reboot from 1998, starring Matthew Broderick, and had some familiarity with the old Japanese imports. “I think I learned from [them] how funny dubbing could be, she recalls. “I didn’t understand what Godzilla actually represented in the Japanese version. And yet the actress’s first giant movie, after a string of acclaimed turns in independent and smaller films, notably “Martha Marcy May Marlene, is the new “Godzilla. Admittedly, it’s not action/monster movie junk; like the 1954 original, it’s a serious film that depicts destruction with realism. “The young kids can see it and go, ‘Wow, that’s crazy!’ she says. “Everyone else can see hints of a larger point. And she’s glad she got what she expected. “It’s always been what they said it was going to be, which is quite phenomenal, she says. “It was far more

Back in biology class, in between talks on Punnett squares and dominant traits, your teacher likely implied that your genetic destiny was fixed at birth. You got some genes from your mom and some from your dad and that’s how you came along. But now, new information about genes has shown that they affect your life after you’re out of the womb. “Inheritance,” by geneticist Dr. Sharon Moalem, describes how the study of genetics has changed and what it might mean for the future of humanity. There have been numerous advances since the sequencing of the human genome, and an influx of new information has changed the way many scientists think about genetics. “Now there’s the idea that you can change your genetic destiny,” says Moalem. The Mallett trade still hasn’t happened but a new wrinkle was added to a potential exchange Tuesday as Texans All-Pro wide receiver Andre Johnson openly questioned his future with the organization. “Kind of wonder if this is still the place for me,â€? This series has featured it all: high-scoring games, lowscoring games, overtime, double overtime and shutouts, but Game 6 was a new installment — a blowout.
