For 13 years, the streets around the World Trade Center have been surrounded with chain-link fences. Those fences come down today, opening up the area where more than one million visitors have already visited the footprints of the twin towers — waterfalls ensconced where the buildings once stood. After years of delays and financial woes, the National Sept. 11 Memorial & Museum opens its doors to the public on May 21, offering access to artifacts, images and documented memories of the attacks

that killed 2,983 people. The day before President Barack Obama visits the site for its dedication, city leaders and family members gathered at the museum to preview its grand opening. Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who was elected to his first term weeks after the attacks, called the completion of the $700 million memorial project a reminder for the city, country and world alike. Witnesses and family members alike donated much of the content within the museum, capturing stories of survivors and loved ones lost after the terrorist attacks. The underground facilities also include a private, city-managed repository for the 7,930 unidentified fragmentary remains of

Future generations

9/11 victims — an idea that unsettled a group of family members upset about the decision to place the remains in the museum instead of a tomb. However, some family members called the move appropriate. Charles G. Wolf lost his wife Kather-

ine only two weeks after she started a job at the WTC’s South Tower. While there were no remains of his wife, Wolf — who participated in the museum’s family advisory council — said that the idea to place the unidentified human remains at the site of the attack was not the museum’s but the families. “This was our idea,” he said. “So anyone who tries to tell you that we weren’t consulted is wrong.” Despite the complications, the now-complete memorial represents a feat Bloomberg praised as the culmination of more than a decade’s worth of thought and work. “It’s a solemn day,” he said, “but it’s also a day that should put, if not smiles on our faces, satisfaction in our hearts.”

Inside the museum The museum’s primary exhibition spaces are buried 700 feet below street level, housing some 110,000 square feet that 9/11 Memorial CEO and president Joe Daniels

described as a “living testament to our nation’s resiliency.” •

Architects and curators designed the space so

that it would tell, not only the events of Sept. 11, but also the personal stories of those who died and survived the attacks. Timelines of events guide

visitors through the days before and after the towers fell. •

Boxes of tissues are spread throughout the exhibit.

Controversy

Voicing concerns Ahead of the museum’s opening, critics voiced concern over a section of an exhibit detailing the terrorist group al-Qaeda. Some Muslim leaders are worried that a video detailing how al-Qaeda came to be, might not distance the faith from an extremist few. Paula Grant Berry, a member of the family advisory council, said the video underwent careful consideration. “We in no way want to convey that the perpetrators were anything but extreme fundamentalist and not in any way representative of an enormous religion in this world,” Berry explained. Transportation

L, M lines to receive boost L and M riders will soon see some relief from overcrowded trains and a bump in weekend service, the MTA announced on Wednesday. The MTA plans on increasing service to the lines this fall due to increased ridership demands.

“Among the changes is a significant increase in L weekend service, which will decrease wait times for customers as well as increase capacity on a line that continues to see ridership growth, most notably during off-peak hours,” said NYC Transit president Carmen Bianco. “Ridership is at an all-time high, including

records for weekend ridership. These are customers who rely on us for all of their transportation needs, both work and play, and we are trying to meet that demand with our available resources.” Implementation of the changes will cost approximately $1.7 million annually, the MTA said. METRO

Infastructure. Obama speaks at NY Bridge

President Barack Obama is pushing an infastructure plan. / GETTY IMAGES

President Barack Obama appeared at the aging Tappan Zee Bridge on Wednesday to chide Congress for failing to approve legislation for needed road projects. With Congress facing a fight on how to replenish a federal fund for road construction, Obama urged lawmakers to pass a transportation bill to pay for an estimated 112,000 highway projects and 5,600 transit projects under way this year. Without passage, work

could grind to a halt, putting at risk almost 700,000 jobs in the peak summer construction season. “If they don’t act by the end of the summer, federal funding for transportation projects will run out,” Obama said. “There will be no money, the cupboard will be bare.” Obama has offered a four-year, $302 billion transport spending plan, paid for by ending some business tax breaks.

Detention. Pentagon considers options for Chelsea Manning The U.S. military is considering options for the detention of a transgender soldier who is serving time in prison for turning over secret files to WikiLeaks. The Associated Press on Wednesday reported that defense officials were trying to transfer Chelsea Manning, who seeks to live as a woman, to a civilian prison to facilitate that treatment. “No decision to transfer Private Manning to a civilian detention facility has been made, and any such decision will, of course, properly balance the soldier’s medical needs with our obligation to ensure Private Manning remains behind bars,” Rear Admiral John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman, said in a statement. Defense officials said that one option under consideration was transferring Manning to a civilian prison. In April, a U.S. judge

ruled that Manning, who had gone by the name Bradley, could legally use the name Chelsea. Manning was born as a man but identifies as a woman. Manning is serving her sentence in all-male detention facilities at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Kirby, in a statement issued to reporters during a visit by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to Saudi Arabia, also said that Hagel had approved a request from the U.S. Army to assess “potential treatment options for inmates diagnosed with gender dysphoria,” which refers to individuals who experience discontent with their gender. Manning has repeatedly stated her desire to live as a woman and has requested hormone replacement therapy in prison, but so far Army officials have denied those requests. REUTERS

Death toll rises. Hope fades for survivors in Turkish mine fire

A miner is carried to an ambulance as a relative looks on on Wednesday in Soma, Turkey. / GETTY IMAGES

Hopes faded of finding more survivors in a coal mine in western Turkey on Wednesday, where 245 workers were confirmed killed and around 120 still feared to be trapped in what is likely to prove the nation’s worst ever industrial disaster. Anger over the deadly fire at the mine about 300 miles southwest of Istanbul echoed across a country that has seen a decade of rapid economic growth but still suffers from one of the world’s worst workplace safety records. Opponents blamed Prime Minister Tayyip

Erdogan’s government for privatizing the country’s mines and ignoring repeated warnings about their safety. “We as a nation of 77 million are experiencing a very great pain, Erdogan told a news conference after visiting the site. But he appeared to turn defensive when asked whether sufficient precautions had been in place at the mine. “Explosions like this in these mines happen all the time. It’s not like these don’t happen elsewhere in the world, he said, reeling off a list of global mining accidents since 1862. REUTERS

Painful Varicose Veins and Swollen Legs? Now is the time to take care of it! Varicose veins are MORE than just a cosmetic problem. They can also be a warning sign of a condition called Venous Insufficiency that kills over half a million people every year.

A South African court on Wednesday ordered Olympic and Paralympic track star Oscar Pistorius to undergo evaluation for mental illness — a move which could determine whether he lacked criminal capacity when he shot dead his girlfriend. The prosecution had asked for the evaluation after a psychiatrist told the court on Monday that Pistorius, who is on trial for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp on Feb. 14 last year, suffered from an anxiety disorder. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel has argued he wanted to prevent the 27-year-old sprinter, who faces life in prison if convicted, from later appealing on the basis of a disturbed mental condition. Looking up to Nicole Kidman

It’s upfront week! The week when networks showcase their fall and midseason shows to attract advertisers, but which also serve as indicators of what shows will be on the air. Here’s some of the biggest bits: Shonda Rimes, the creator of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal,” inked an eight-figure deal with ABC for a full night of programming on Thursdays. Starting in the fall, her “Grey’s” will move to 8 p.m., while “Scandal” moves to 9 p.m. in order to launch her new drama, “How to Get Away with Murder.” Next fall will see the final season of “Two and a Half Men.” After

Nicole Kidman and a much-shorter Tim Roth posed for a photo for their new film, “Grace of Monaco,” about Grace Kelly at the 67th Annual Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday. Everyone has their fingers crossed it will be better than last year’s bomb about a blond royal, the Naomi Watts-starring “Diana.” MIKE MARSLAND, WIREIMAGE

Justin Bieber is under investigation by the LAPD for robbery charges after an altercation with a 13-yearold fan’s mother at a L.A.area miniature golf course earlier this week, accord-

ing to the Huffington Post. Bieber allegedly accosted the older woman after noticing her snap photos of him with her cell phone, insisting she erase the photos. When she refused to comply, Bieber reportedly “ripped” the phone “out of her hands,” only to find it locked. Bieber eventually gave the phone back, but

not before chastising the woman, telling her she was embarrassing herself in front of her daughter, who was in tears at that point. So far, the pop star “hasn’t been arrested or questioned,” police officials say. “It’s too preliminary.”

12 very expensive yet very popular seasons, it will come to a close. The Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer comedy’s final outing will be a “seasonlong finale event,” Nina Tassler, the president of CBS, said. We’re curious if the original “half” man, Angus T. Jones, will return for this “finale event” after leaving the show and calling it “filth.” TBS announced yesterday that their late-night star, Conan O’Brien, has signed on for four more years. We can’t wait to not watch him for the next four years. We love you, Conan, but it’s still TBS! Also, Elsa from “Frozen” will be a character on “Once Upon a Time” next season. Lake Bell is known for comic acting, in “It’s Complicated” and “No Strings Attached,” as well as for writing, directing and starring in last year’s “In a World...” But “Million Dollar Arm” producer Joe Roth likens his casting of her as Jon Hamm’s love interest in the true baseball tale to when he cast an unknown Sandra Bullock in “While You Were Sleeping” nearly 20 years ago. “She’s got a great career in front of her,” Roth says. So, no pressure, right Lake? Clearly when you think

I was actually wondering, after Joe Roth made the Sandra Bullock comparison at today’s press conference, if you’re feeling any extra career pressure already. I was like, “Damn, Joe.” We’ll see how that plays out. [Laughs] No, I was hugely flattered, just

because obviously I love Sandra Bullock and she’s fantastic. I love her both personally and her work. But no, I don’t feel any pressure. I think he might feel pressure now. I’m like, “So, what are we doing? What’s the next deal? Let’s get some ‘Speed’ money.” [Laughs] But no, it was hugely complimentary. And it legitimately made me blush. It’s moving to think, “Oh my God, this really changed my life, and I did it for myself.” But that said, I think because I’m in my 30s I’m not so wooed by an opportunity that I have no respect for the process. Making a movie does take years, you know? Maybe some people are more prolific in being able to churn out a movie a year. At this particular juncture, I don’t have that yet.

You don’t feel any sort of deadline pressure from other people on your team? I put my own deadlines to myself. Free Consultation More women than ever are earning more than their partners, which sometimes creates relationship challenges. / GOODSHOT

Relationships. These women bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan. Twenty-something media executive Amanda Jones* has it all: loving husband, successful career and oh yeah, resentment. As he studies in medical school, she toils at the office, carrying the financial burden for both of them. While Jones considers herself a “completely modern woman,” there’s still “the fantasy of having your partner take care of you financially that nags at you in the background.” She admits, “I would be lying if I didn’t say that I sometimes feel resentful. Doesn’t everyone want to be taken care of?” At the end of a tedious day, they’re both exhausted and when they order take-out, she’s expected to pay for it, Jones says.

Although it’s for the short term, as he’ll eventually be a high earner (that is, after his four-year residency), she’s been the high earner for several years now. He doesn’t like the situation either, especially since it’s usually the first thing she mentions in fights. “I know he gets resentful that he does more chores than I do, but given what I spend on him, I sort of feel like it’s even!” she says. Jones isn’t alone. Farnoosh Torabi’s new book, “When She Makes More,” addresses this growing trend. Since Torabi’s the top earner in her household, the author and finance expert notes, “Society has yet to really embrace women as heads of households. For me, that was a lightbulb moment.” Her goal? To eliminate the feeling of “confusion, guilt and feeling less than.” Torabi wants to celebrate these women: “I want to have others be proud of it and really own it.”

7Ê « iÌiÊ/iiÌ Ê-ÌÀ> } Ìi }Ê7 Ì ÕÌÊ À>Vià And owning it should start early. “Men and women both need to be able to show up as their authentic selves in a relationship,” says Megan Dalla-Camina, author of “Getting Real About Having It All.” It’s not uncommon for women to take on so-called masculine qualities to become the alpha female. Dalla-Camina explains that men may start wondering about what role they’ll play. “It’s about how people show up and what energy they bring and how it either balances out in the relationship or doesn’t.” The key is for both partners to have an active role in their relationship and household. “That’s teamwork,” says Torabi. “Sometimes we forget that when we’re bringing home the bigger paycheck, we assume all the authority.” *Name has been changed. Less debate about climate Maybe Metro should spend less time incessantly publishing opposing views on climate change and post letters on other problems affecting the U.S., such as an educational system that is not even in the Top 20 in the world and the fact that the economy is creating so few jobs and that birth rates of the lower-income people are so high that about 46 million people are on food stamps. Climate isn’t political Actually, global temperatures are both natural from plants and biosphere, man-made, and, yes, even animal-made. Aloof Republicans joke that cow farts contribute methane to the atmosphere. But none of this matters. It comes to one basic principle as mentioned in the Constitution’s Preamble: the welfare of the people. That’s why the government needs to act now. The common good requires an environment. Even President Nixon knew that when he motivated Congress to adopt the EPA. ARTHUR BLENHEIM, VIA EMAIL

Nets season ends in late-game collapse NBA playoffs. The Heat finished its Game 5 win with a 13-3 run to bring the Nets’ season to an ugly close. The Nets couldn’t figure out a way to finish a game and now their season is finished. Miami beat Brooklyn, 96-94, in Game 5 to win the Eastern Conference semifinal series, 4-1. Brooklyn, the highestpaid team in NBA history, will have a long offseason ahead of them. The Nets led by nine with 4:48 remaining, but Mirza Teletovic missed two ill-advised 3-pointers and the Heat went on a 12-0 run to pull ahead, 95-91. Joe Johnson made a 3-pointer to pull within one, but Johnson couldn’t even get a shot off to tie or take the lead after LeBron James split a pair of free throws. The Heat opened the fourth quarter with back-

The Heat have closed out their last seven series in which they led 3-1 by winning Game 5. All seven of those games have come during the “Big 3” era of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

to-back 3-pointers by Rashard Lewis and James, but the Nets answered with a 7-1 run to push the lead back to nine points. The momentum appeared ready to swing back to Miami when Paul Pierce picked up an offensive foul on an illegal screen with 5:56 remaining. But Johnson hit a

floater in the lane while being fouled and completed the old-fashioned three-point play. Johnson led the Nets with 34 points, while James had 29 points and nine rebounds for the Heat. MARK OSBORNE @MetroNYSports

Getting younger The Nets have no first-round draft pick in 2014, thanks to that Celtics trade, but they need to get younger. Kevin Garnett is still under contract one more season, but that could make his expiring contract desirable.

3

What about Brook? There is no question the team took off after Brook Lopez was done for the season. Head coach Jason Kidd has been clear he doesn’t want a plodding team. If he’s healthy, the team needs to figure out how it wants to play. METRO

WOULD SOME TEAM TAKE GARNETT FOR A SEASON?

Truth or dare When the Nets traded for Paul Pierce last offseason they knew he was in the final year of his deal. They hoped for a title win, but at least a near miss might convince him to stay. It seems unlikely he will be back, though, with the opportunity to join a team much closer to a title — maybe even his old coach with the Clippers.
