Somber dedication for Sept. 11 Museum Solemn. President Obama spoke about the courage and sacrifice that occurred on 9/11 at the ceremony for the new museum. Hundreds of visitors descended seven stories to the base of the National September 11 Memorial Museum on Thursday for the exhibit’s dedication ceremony that centered as much around the lives of those lost 13 years ago as it did survivors. At least 700 individuals were on hand for the commemoration, which began with a children’s choir rendition of Stephen Sondheim’s “Somewhere” that reverberated from the slurry wall within the expansive Foundation Hall. Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg was the first to address the crowd, which sat in front of a large concrete slab that showed photos taken on the day of the attack and videos recounting the lives upended thereafter. The images and sounds of voice mails from worried family members left for victims led many to wipe tears during the ceremony. “This museum — built on a site of rubble and ruins — is now filled with the faces, the stories and the memories of our common grief and our common hope,” Bloomberg said. Among the sea of faces in the crowd were survivors, family members of those lost in the attack, first responders and various political leaders — including President Barack Obama and wife Michelle, former president Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Obama toured the exhibit before approaching the podium, along with the first lady, the Clintons, Bloomberg and his longtime partner Diana Taylor.

“To all those who responded with such courage — on behalf of Michelle and myself and the American people — it is an honor for us to join in your memories, to remember and to reflect. But above all, to reaffirm the true spirit of 9/11 — love, compassion, sacrifice — and to enshrine it forever in the heart of our nation.” Obama The President said that the museum would be a profound and moving experience to those who visit, and it gives an opportunity for people to see the faces of “3,000 innocent souls”

who lost their lives in 2001. “We can touch their names and hear their voices and glimpse the small items that speak to the beauty of their lives — a wedding ring, a dusty hel-

Politics. Rob Astorino accepts the GOP nomination for NY governor It’s official: Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino is the GOP’s candidate to run against Gov. Andrew Cuomo. the weight of his mandates” and blaming it on local governments. “New York government grew so wide, so fast and so broad that it had to tax

its people into the ground to support itself. And when Albany couldn’t tax us any more, it began making local governments do it for them,” Astorino said. Along with his running mate, Chemung County Sheriff Christopher Moss, Astorino vowed to cut taxes and regulations and to repeal gun reform laws passed by the state in 2013 that he called an “unconstitutional political gimmick.” CHESTER JESUS SORIA

Transit. Metro-North announces reforms to improve train safety Metro-North announced on Thursday a series of reforms the railroad is undertaking to improve safety after several serious incidents in the last year and a federal review of operating practices. The review, conducted over the winter following a deadly train derailment in December, found a “poor safety culture at the railroad. Metro-North said a work plan has been established to address each

of the actions identified in the review. The railroad is conducting outreach to employees and reorganizing the Safety Department. Initiatives also include reductions in the maximum authorized speeds, ensuring no Metro-North locations require speed reductions of more than 20 miles per hour, as well as outfitting more of the railcar fleet with “Alerters to keep train engineers responsive. SORRY, I’M BOOKED

My house has books on tables, on shelves and next to the bed. Books slide across the kitchen counter, cascade down the stairs and tumble from closets. WELLBEING

Don’t panic. You can take steps to help stop your hair from turning white.

10

Quoted

Eventually, most of us will develop canities — the technical term for going gray. The bad news is that there’s no proven way to reverse the condition. The good news, as most of us probably know, is that it isn’t life or even health-threatening — just a little demoralizing. Canities can affect 20-somethings, but it usually kicks in around middle age. Some people retain most of their hair’s color into their 60s. Technically, hair doesn’t turn gray; it turns white. But as it does, it reflects nearby coloring and appears gray. “Each of the 100,000150,000 hairs on our scalp are on independent growth cycles,” says Dr. Robert Dorin, a family practice doctor and member of The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. “As our hair shafts elongate, special cells called melanocytes produce hair pigment and deposit it in the hair cells. As we age, the special-

Keep your color As yet, there’s no proof that graying can be reversed, but slowing down the process is possible, says Dorin. His tips for maintaining natural hair color sound familiar: They are the same for maintaining general good health.

1

Stop smoking and limit alcohol intake: “These inhibit your body’s ability to fight the processes of aging and create free radicals that destroy cellular function.”

2

Exercise: “Consistent, moderate exercise helps your body’s defense system

ized cells that constantly resupply new melanocytes, called melanocyte stem cells, begin to slow down.” So, with aging, or interruption in melanocyte production due to illness, the amount of pigment distributed through the hair becomes more sparse. The rate of natural hair color change is mostly due to genetics, says Dorin, but maintaining good health plays a huge part, too. “Hormone levels, stress, lifestyle, environmental pollutants and toxins can affect hair pigment production,” he adds. Even natural body chemicals affect it. “Recently in a study done in Europe, scientists found that a buildup of hydrogen peroxide from the hair cells’ biological process contributed to graying hair.”

Welcome back, trodder

Monster reboot. Godzilla returns, only he’s serious, and his co-star is Juliette Binoche.

These are times when we prefer our cultural junk gloomy and realistic. Even “Leprechaun” is getting a “dark” reboot. But it makes sense for Godzilla. The 1954 original is brutal and brooding, not campy like the film versions that followed. Despite being so

serious in tone, the new one doesn’t have the drive of the first, which symbolically exorcised then-recent demons of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But even if there’s no burning reason it needs to exist, this “Godzilla” at least has craft. It’s sometimes disarming how adept it is at doing something atypical. It’s an origin story, following the paths of a pair of winged behemoths, as well as the title megareptile himself, who decide to use the planet as their battleground.

Its focus is tight, even narrow, sometimes to a fault. Its characters aren’t interesting, despite an Review ‘Godzilla’ Director: Gareth Edwards Stars: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen Rating: PG-13

But this is, by design, a detached blockbuster: The cameras keep us far from the action, denying us clear shots of its creatures, and even cuts away from fights when they start getting big. There’s only one way this is going to go, and that’s not a bad thing; films like this are essentially comfort food. But the script so heavily favors J.B.’s tale that all else falls by the wayside. That includes Patel and Singh (Madhur Mittal and Suraj Sharma), as well as excitable aspiring coach Amit (Pitobash). Ostensibly the focus of the story, they get one personality tic each. They’re even reduced to those dumb jokes about rural types not

understanding the basics of “civilized” culture, like how one doesn’t go up the down escalator. Good thing Lake Bell is there.

As Hamm’s love interest, she brings an unusual, fun energy to a film that needs as much personality as it can get. MATT PRIGGE

Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cotillard try to eke out a life in 1920s New York in James Gray’s “The Immigrant. / THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY

Source: Scarborough 2013 R2

Coming to America Old New York. Marion Cotillard runs afoul of Joaquin Phoenix in the retro “The Immigrant. James Gray is a classicist whose fondness for old movies — particularly old melodramas — is palpable in every frame of his films. In “We Own the Night and “Two Lovers, he doesn’t just bring old styles to the modern day. He behaves as if certain cinematic styles have never gone out of practice, because they never should have. His latest, “The Immigrant, is truly old-fashioned; it’s set in 1921, and it depicts the rocky experience of those who came into our country in less pleasant times than would greet them now. Indeed, few had it as bad as Marion Cotillard’s Ewa, a Polish Catholic woman whose misfortunes start when her sick sister is turned away at Ellis Island. Ewa seems to luck out when she befriends Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix), a dap-

per stranger who says he can ferry her out to Manhattan. Alas, he’s a dangerous pimp who ropes her into his trade, then allows her to wield some management power. She seems to find another savior in Emil (Jeremy Renner), a kindly low-rent magician, but might she just be terminally gullible? Melodramas get a bad rap, depicted by detractors as broad and shameless. But the best — and even some of the merely pretty good — deliver nuanced characterizations and performances. All three leads gradually reveal surprising details and shifts in personality. Bruno’s terror proves to be at least somewhat of a front; as in other Gray Review ‘The Immigrant’ Director: James Gray Stars: Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix Rating: R

films, Phoenix’s character is a wounded child playing dress-up. Ewa herself winds up more confident and even ambitious than the sad-eyed victim we meet at the start of the film. Gray is one of the movie’s stars, too, in a way. His images are weighted with purpose, inspiring fascination with the world they create and the actors they show. The cinematography by Darius Khondji (“Seven) has the old-world mustiness of classic paintings. The sets are evocative of time and place — Gray is one of the great chroniclers of New York ’hoods that too rarely are showcased onscreen — but it’s the faces that haunt the most. Gray loves close-ups of faces one can stare at for hours — the faces that betray feelings better than words ever can. He understands more than most that the close-up is one of cinema’s strongest powers, and he’s hired three actors whose mugs are not only iconic but relentlessly human. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Godzilla vs. the time monster

Evolution of a beast. There are more than two dozen official Godzilla films — that is, ones put out by Japan’s Toho Company, LTD. There is also a smattering of semi- or even non-official ones, including the American reboot out this weekend. Godzilla has largely stayed the same, with the occasional minor — and not-so-minor — variations. Here he is through his 60 years. MATT PRIGGE

The original, mean one

The nice-ish one

The one that meets Bambi

The sketch comedy one

The North Korean one

The 1998 one

Godzilla’s influence quickly ran through the globe. In 1969 he was even one of the subjects of a classic amateur film. Marv Newland’s “Bambi Meets Godzilla” runs only a minute and a half, the majority of which shows a hand-drawn Bambi hanging in a field while its maker’s name occupies every single credit. The meeting, when it comes, goes about as expected. (There are two sequels, but neither was created by Newland.)

Having made waves (sorry) with “Jaws” jokes, “Saturday Night Live” milked Godzilla for yuks at least twice: as a guest of Baba Wawa (pictured) and in a spoof called “Kramer Vs. Godzilla.” “SCTV” got in on it too, disguising him as “Grogan” and giving him fangs that zigzagged across his mouth. Voiced by John Candy, he was a more mild-mannered, thoughtful titan, who relaxed while being lightly grilled on a chat show.

So this happened: Kim Jong-Il, when he was merely the son of the ruler of North Korea, really liked Godzilla. He forced Shin Sang-ok, a South Korean director he had kidnapped, to take a break from propaganda films to make a Godzilla rip-off. The result was 1985’s “Pulgasari,” in which a giant lizard-like monster who eats metal fights a feudal-era king who runs his land with an iron fist, and which is definitely nothing like North Korea.

Only a handful of times have filmmakers portrayed Godzilla realistically, seriously considering the impact a rampaging colossus would have on humanity. Indeed, it started out doing just that, in 1954. He wasn’t just a fun toy concept; he was borne out of the pain of WWII, reflecting the anxieties that came from the Nuclear Age. The American version softened the blow, making it fun and adding Raymond Burr as a journalist.

For his first four outings, Godzilla was a menace. By the fifth, 1964’s “Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster,” he had chilled out into a mere anti-hero, who usually battles or teams up with the likes of Rodan, Mothra (pictured) and Hedorah (aka the Smog Monster). He even had a cute kid: Minilla. In these, the hulking, fat behemoth became a leaner fighting machine. The good times ran through 1975’s “The Terror of Mechagodzilla.” Twenty-one years is not a bad run.

Stubborn fat has met its match.

It’s amazing that it took more than 40 years for Hollywood to make its own Godzilla picture. The man for the job seemed to be Roland Emmerich, hot off the populist neo-disaster picture “Independence Day.” Unfortunately, Roland Emmerich is terrible, and his mega-sized “Godzilla” took things either too lightly or too seriously, and featured thin-skinned digs at Siskel and Ebert. The latter, in his 1½ star review, complained that he wasn’t even stomped on.

Drum beats and dance BAM. This year, DanceAfrica focuses on the culture of Madagascar. The snap of a finger on a djembe drum starts the beat of DanceAfrica’s 37th annual festival, which begins May 18. The opening ceremony, led by founder Chuck Davis, previews the dance, music, art and film to come during the weeklong celebration. Established in 1977, DanceAfrica sought to heighten awareness of African culture and counter the stereotypes of Africans in the media. The response by the local community was immediate. What began as single performance at the Lepercq Space at the Brooklyn Academy of Music quickly grew into a multi-day affair with an ever-expanding résumé of performers from around the world.

DINO PERRUCCI

“We began with only local companies,” Davis recalls. “Now we are international. As we have grown, so has our audience.” This year, DanceAfrica focuses on the music and culture of Madagascar. Joining four performances of Malagasy dance and music are art exhibitions, lectures, dance workshops, DJ parties, film showings, a children’s village and a bazaar with 200 vendors selling crafts, food and fashion. Musically, New York of-

fers its best to a show by Bakomanga; students come from Brooklyn’s Asase Yaa arts school and Buffalo’s AACC Dance & Drum Performance Company. Other highlights are folk/ blues guitarist Madagascar Slim, vocalist Hanitrarivo Rasoanaivo and the BAM/ Restoration DanceAfrica Ensemble. DanceAfrica pays tribute to the visual arts through Nigerian Nnenna Okore, known for her organic wall sculptures built from found materials. Sun-

day afternoon, she demonstrates her sculptural process with BAM Visual Art curator Holly Shen Chaves at the Fisher Hillman Studio. Okore will also unveil a new sculpture. But it’s the attendees themselves who reflect the fest’s main goal: a commitment to preserving African heritage. “DanceAfrica is a celebration for everyone,” Davis says. How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

Salmoning is safer for cyclists I hate to disappoint all of you who try to hate on Alec Baldwin, but it’s much SAFER and smarter for a bicyclist to ride AGAINST traffic, regardless of what our chauffeur-driven-in-an SUV politicians say. Would you rather your opponent always be BEHIND you or in FRONT of you? And all the cyclists who died from being “doored” would be alive if only they had been riding against traffic. And any honest adult admits the “disorderly conduct” charge is a scam by cops to use against anyone they don’t like. Creating a crowd equals disorderly conduct? Then all cops are guilty of it every time they do their jobs.

Would Dems be OK with the IRS on their backs? The politicization of the IRS and other government agencies since Obama took office is unprecedented in U.S. history, and quite frankly, it’s dangerous for our democracy. I ask this of those on the left who are opposed to conservatives and therefore don’t care what the IRS is doing: When the Republicans are back in power, will you be OK with this? Rangers renewing rivalry NHL playoffs. The two Original Six teams, who haven’t met in the playoffs since 1996, fight for a Cup berth. Derick Brassard looked like a kid on Christmas morning Thursday. This was a man — and, a team — that appeared ready for the challenge that awaits them in the Eastern Conference finals in the form of the Canadiens. “We’re pretty excited,” Brassard said following an optional skate at the Rangers’ facility in Greenburgh, New York. “We know we’re in a really good position. We’re facing a really good team. Obviously when you’re in the [final] four you’re not going to face. … It’s not going to be any easier. We’re excited.” Game 1 of the East-

Pierce, Garnett skip speaking after season No one knows if Kevin Garnett will be gone from Brooklyn next season, but he was missing

from cleanout day. Garnett also refused to speak to the media after the team’s seasonending loss Wednesday. He is under contract for one more season. His former Celtics teammate, Paul Pierce,

who is a free agent, also passed on speaking with the media Thursday, though he said he “hadn’t given much thought” to his future after Game 5. ESPN reports he may rejoin Doc Rivers with the Clippers. METRO

ern Conference finals is set for Saturday (1 p.m., NBC) at the Bell Centre in Montreal. This series will mark the 15th time the Rangers and Canadiens have met in the playoffs. The teams are 7-7 in the previous 14 all-time meetings, with the Rangers

having won the last series, a six-game Eastern Conference quarterfinals matchup in 1996. The Canadiens have given Henrik Lundqvist fits throughout his career, as he is 13-11-2 with an .897 save percentage and 2.85 goals against average in 27 career games. He is 4-6-2 all-time at Bell Centre, and last played there Jan. 15, 2012. “It’s so long ago since I played there, so I don’t really remember,” Lundqvist said about playing at Bell Centre, in between laughs. “I look forward to playing there. It’s a conference final; it’s in Montreal. That’s special, and I’m excited about that. And when it comes to my game, I just try to go out and play the same way. Don’t overthink it, enjoy it. ... We’re going up there, sticking together, believing that we can do it.” DENIS GORMAN @DenisGorman sports@metro.us
