Prosecutors want to know who tattooed the right forearm of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, who is due to be arraigned next week in the murder of two Boston men. Hernandez, 24, has been charged in the drive-by shooting deaths of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in Boston’s South End in July 2012. The charges come nearly a year after authorities say Hernandez shot and killed Dorchester’s Odin Lloyd in North Attleborough. In a statement released Wednesday, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office said investigators wanted to speak with the ink artist or artists “who provided Hernandez with specific tattoos on his right forearm between

February 2012 and June 2013.” During that time period, Hernandez is known to have traveled to Hermosa Beach, California; Palm Beach and Miami Beach, Florida; Rhode Island; Boston; and his hometown of Bristol, Connecticut, investigators said. Anyone with this information may contact Boston Police Sgt. Det. Marc Sullivan at 617-343-5839. Hernandez will be arraigned on Wednesday in Boston on two counts of firstdegree murder, three counts of armed assault with intent to murder, and single counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection to the 2012 killings. Hernandez’ cousin, Tanya Singleton, is expected to be arraigned on an additional indictment for criminal contempt of court on June 2.

Inky evidence

Mysterious request Conley’s office said it would not describe the tattoos in question, and stressed that the tattoo artists are being sought as witnesses, not as suspects in any crime. Hernandez’s arms and hands are almost completely covered in ink. The word “blood” is seen on Hernandez’s right hand. Star tattoos and a roaring lion are among the tattoos on his right arm, and a dollar sign graces his left wrist. A statement released Wednesday said: “In order not to taint any potential statements, authorities are not publicly describing the specific tattoos or the nature of the inquiry — only that the artists may have made observations of evidentiary value in the pending ... murder prosecutions.”

The MBTA operator who allegedly blamed a recent bus crash on an allergy-induced sneezing fit has had her license revoked, according to the state’s Registry of Motor Vehicles. Shanna Shaw, who has worked for the T since 1996, has been put on unpaid leave and charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly lying to investigators following Sunday morning’s crash in Newton. According to RMV spokes-

woman Sara Lavoie, Shaw’s personal and commercial licenses were suspended at the request of MBTA Transit Police who were concerned that she posed an immediate threat to public safety. Transit Police said in an affidavit that Shaw blamed the crash on a sneezing fit, but later admitted that she was holding a cell phone while driving. Secure communities. Somerville will not hold illegal immigrants Saying Somervillians know what’s best for their community, Mayor Joseph Curtatone will order the city’s police officers to no longer hold undocumented immigrants solely for the purpose of deportation. Curtatone made the announcement at a news conference Wednesday morning in front of City Hall. The order means that police will only hold undocumented immigrants if immigration authorities have a warrant or there is a law enforcement purpose beyond immigration status. Curtatone spoke out about the controversial federal Secure Communities program which mandates police departments provide information on arrestees to federal agencies including U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. “This program, it just tears apart families who have committed no crime. It deports otherwise law-abiding individuals for offenses as small as a broken taillight,” Curtatone said. “We are not going to waste our time and resources on people who are valuable, contributing members of our community who have tried to play by the rules only to find out there’s not a line to get in to become a citizen.” Proponents of the move

Making his case Curtatone was pressed about the recent case of Nicolas Guaman, an Ecuadoran immigrant illegally living in the country, who was sentenced this week to jail for driving drunk, running over, dragging and killing a Milford man. Guaman had previously been arrested and the case became a focal point of the Secure Communities debate. •

“To state that blindly detaining people just based on their immigration status is going to prevent that crime, or crimes like that, is not the case. What it is doing is driving a deeper divide,” Curtatone said, saying that nationally more than half of the people deported under Secure Communities had no criminal convictions.

said the order is the first of its kind in the state and would create better relationships between the immigrant community and police. Opponents have said that not holding undocumented immigrants creates a safe haven. A bill to decrease the state’s participation in Secure Communities is currently in the state Senate. Neglect. Obama vows to get to truth of Veterans Affairs controversy President Barack Obama vowed on Wednesday to get to the bottom of allegations of neglect of veterans’ health care and made clear Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki’s job may be on the line as he scrambled to contain a budding controversy. The President appeared in the White House press briefing room moments after meeting Shinseki and Rob Nabors, the top Obama aide who is leading a review into allegations that long wait times for veterans seeking medical treatment could have led to some deaths. He said he expects to get the preliminary results of a review about the scope of the problem at the Veterans Administration next week. Obama sidestepped a question as to whether Shinseki had tendered his resignation, but hinted that the retired four-star general may not want to stay on if it turns out the allegations are as sweeping as suggested.

Pelosi names Democrats to Benghazi panel U.S. House of Representatives Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday named the five members of her party who will serve on a special panel investigating the 2012 attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. After weeks of deliberating over whether to participate in a Republican-led panel that Democrats predict will be partisan, Pelosi announced the members who will round out the committee. House Speaker John Boehner already has appointed the seven Republican members. Referring to the special investigating committee, which will look into the Sept. 11, 2012, Benghazi attack that has been probed by other House panels, Pelosi said, “It is not necessary to put the families [of those killed] or our country through this partisan exercise once again.” REUTERS

Straight out of a ‘Magic Mike’ sequel

We’ve had some time to process Channing Tatum’s very open interview with GQ magazine and THIS is definitely the most shocking part: The hunky actor revealed that his “21 Jump Street co-star Jonah Hill made a very NSFW bet back in 2012. Hill had said that the cop comedy wouldn’t make more than $35 million at the box office during opening weekend. And if it did, he would kiss ... wait for it ... the tip of Tatum’s penis. The movie made $36.3 million. Heads. Explode. Is Tatum’s wife Jenna

Tatum didn’t seem too thrilled in his interview with the possibility of the kiss though. “I don’t know if I could ever cash it in, he told the magazine. “It would change our relationship forever. Tatum also revealed details of “Magic Mike XXL, set to hit theaters next summer. The exotic dancers will be going to a strippers’ convention. Can I get a seat on that bus?

Every day, we’ve been lucky enough to see pictures of each Kardashian and Jenner clan member making his or her way through the airport en route to Paris for Kim and Kanye’s nuptials. But there’s one member of the Hollywood dynasty who we won’t see at LAX in sweatpants and sunglasses shielding his eyes from photographer’s flashes while bearing a toothy grin for the gossip blogs. Unblurred ambition. Model Emily Ratajkowski wants to surprise you You know Emily Ratajkowski as the bodacious beauty from Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines video. She’s all nubile flirtation meets wide-eyed pseudoinnocence, playfully bouncing to the beat. But the line between Ratajkowski’s current image as sexpot eye candy is at odds with her acting ambitions. It will depend upon the success of her upcoming role in director David Fincher’s “Gone Girl as to whether Ratajkowski can escape that lucrative but vapid music-video dance sphere. Initially, the 22-yearold was reluctant to be cast in the video. “Naked girls dancing around in a music video sounded pretty intense, and I didn’t want to be pigeonholed as a music video girl after shooting with Maroon 5 in ‘Love Somebody,’ she says. Ratajkowski describes the word feminist as “testy, saying, “People connect a lot of strange things to that word. In

general, I really love women and I want them to be treated equally. She continues, “I think some people have a problem with a model, who’s done nude work, using the word feminist but I have no problems with saying it. Ratajkowski is keen to avoid being typecast as a pretty airhead despite appearing in the 2014 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. “I’m definitely not into that swimsuit model vibe. I like the ballet and I like to see female porn films — I’m a little different in that way, she asserts. The British-born model is aware that her topless cavorting could strike discord with Hollywood directors. But as she rightly points out regarding being cast as Ben Affleck’s mistress Andie in “Gone Girl, scheduled for release in October, “When you’re working with director David Fincher [“The Social Network and “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo] people definitely do take you seriously. RICHARD PECKETT

No Stanley Cup, but a Bruins balloon dress if you want it Trainspotting. The Bruins may be out of the playoffs, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be reasons to be festive. Perhaps an hour and a half before Bruins forward Milan Lucic allegedly announced plans to murder Montreal Canadien Dale Weise next year, a more whimsical display unfolded across the street from the TD Garden. A master twister and arranger of rubber bags filled with air transformed yellow and black balloons into a Bruins-themed dress he hoped to vend to a lucky devotee of the B’s. Considering their team lost, it’s doubtful Bruins fans were feeling especially

balloon-friendly. But even if he didn’t sell anything, he got to talk to us, so at least his evening wasn’t a complete wash, right? How does one become a balloon artist? Well, I used to be a chef, and I had back surgery. Then my wife suggested that we do a balloon decoration company when she was looking for balloon decorations and everybody was just too over-priced. So we decided to start one, and it took off from there. Do you feel like balloon artistry doesn’t get the respect it deserves? Um, yes and no. A lot of people look at it like, “Oh, it’s just a balloon,” whether I’m downtown making balloons

Spring sunshine is a capricious temptress playing catch me if you can. But that didn’t deter Bistro du Midi from embracing chilly mid-day temperatures in April and opening up the French doors of the groundlevel cafe to unite with the street-side patio overlooking the Public Gardens. Undoubtedly, Chef Robert Sisca is eager to deck out his interpretations of dishes from France’s Midi region with New England spring produce. He’s already tweaked the dinner menu, with a fluke crudo served with a spicy-sweet emulsion, saffron puffed rice wafer and first-crop tomatoes. Sisca’s tea-cured salmon in a green garlic broth uses fresh green spring garlic, which is subtler yet more flavorful than its counterpart. While the upstairs dining room looks over the Public

Gardens tree canopy, the cafe offers ample street life and people-watching. For lunch, Sisca’s creamy smoked whiteasparagus soup is poured at table over asparagus spears, purple Peruvian potatoes cooked al dente and a ramp pistou. More simply, Rhode Island East Beach Blonde oysters are meaty, sweet and need only a hefty squeeze of lemon. More filling, and a great deal any time, du Midi’s grass-fed Angus beef burger is one half-pound and is offered with Brie, goat or Gruyere cheese and fries. It’s an ample meal and, in this

instance, cooked medium as medium should be: no blood, no charring. The Midi regional classic, the Nicoise salad, is one of the tastiest summer dishes. Sisca tops fresh salad leaves with hardboiled egg, green beans, tomato, olives and anchovy, and finishes it with chunky cut, lightly seared yellow fin tuna. Another Nicoise dish, the pan bagnat (usually a Nicoise salad in a bun!), pares down the salad ingredients atop a brioche bun, and tuna is swapped for crispy batter coated cod. It’s Nice via New England. Nice!

Music. The Canadian pop princess talks about growing up and “Here’s to Never Growing Up.”

Skrillex with Milo & Otis, What So Not July 29, Blue Hills Bank Pavilion (On sale today at noon)

On the cover of Avril Lavigne’s most recent album — titled, fittingly enough, “Avril Lavigne” — she looks all grown up, with a stern expression and dark makeup framing her eyes. But the first thing she sings on the album is the line “I don’t care about my makeup,” so it’s probably best to pay heed to the age-old advice of not judging a book (or album) by its cover. Within “Avril Lavigne” is a whole bunch of fun anthemic pop that she’ll be the first to tell you doesn’t really get too deep inside the real Avril Lavigne. But there seems to be a friction on the album between the impulse to preserve her youth (“Here’s to Never Growing Up”) and actually growing up (“Falling Fast”). “It’s really not that deep, musically,” she says, almost dismissively. “I like to be on-

stage, I like to write pop-rock songs. That’s what everyone wants to hear from me, and that’s when everyone goes apes—, with the fist-pumping and all.” With this album, Lavigne collaborated heavily with husband Chad Kroeger of Nickelback. He co-wrote eight of the album’s 13 songs, produced six and performed with Lavigne on one duet. But not all of the collaborative efforts are for public consumption. “We also worked on a song called ‘If I Said That I Loved You,’ and it’s a duet. It’s unreleased, but we played it at our wedding as our first-dance song.” But Lavigne insists that was the only time the guests at their wedding heard either of them sing. “I had a band there to play jazz music, because that’s what I really like: a lot of Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday, then a DJ to play a bunch of dance music for people to dance to.”

Q&A

Helping female artists Your song “Bad Girl” with Marilyn Manson is a great anthem, and in the years since you first came on the scene, other bad girls have come forth to dominate pop music. Do you think that you influenced them? When I came out on the scene, Britney and Christina [were] playing one style of pop: very bubblegum pop. ... Then I came along, I was a girl with a guitar, writing a different style of lyrics and music. I think [to myself], “Did I help open door for other artists in that genre?” That does happen. I’m not going to straight-up say that I did that for these people, but it does happen. Any female artist that’s doing her own thing is also helping other female artists. If you go

IRS has been a tool before Re: ‘IRS said it was wrong’ (Metro, May 21) The most important point has yet to be made, and it involves letter writer Ron Shelton’s original question: How would you feel if the roles were reversed? That should sound familiar, because it’s the exact same question the American left asked of the American right when the Bush administration sicced the IRS on groups (including a church) that dared to question the Iraq War.

Letter writer Ron Shelton said 104 conservative groups were targeted versus seven progressive groups. As presented, his statistics mean nothing, and he forgot the most important thing: How many groups were created by conservatives and progressives during this time period? If conservatives created 300 groups and progressives only 20 groups, the treatment was fair. Everybody knows that there was an inflation of groups in the conservative camp to attack Obama during this period.

Follow the law, save yourself Re: ‘Salmoning is safer for cyclists’ (Metro, May 21) Letter writers Michelle Calabro and Jack Dickenson, and actor Alec Baldwin are wrong — potentially dead wrong — on bicycling against traffic. Eighty percent of bike-car collisions occur at intersections. Motorists look only in the direction of oncoming traffic before bolting out into intersections. If you bike against traffic flow, you are totally invisible to motorists at every intersection. According to the

League of American Bicyclists, 14 percent of bike-car crashes involve wrong-way bicycling, while only 3 percent involve motorists striking a bicyclist from behind. While biking, you need to be as visible as possible to motorists because the 1/10th of a second between perceiving danger and being slammed by a two-ton vehicle isn’t enough time to react to danger.
