Bronx. Teenager who threw deadly blow turns self in to cops A 19-year-old man faces a misdemeanor assault charge after he slapped a European tourist who later died in front of a Bronx bodega on Friday. Cops said that Brownie Lopez walked into the 48th Precinct station house over the weekend after surveillance video showed him striking Oliver D’Orio, an Italianborn tourist who was to fly home to Switzerland on Saturday. Video showed Lopez and D’Orio in front of Guerrero Deli Grocery Corp. on Washington Avenue in Belmont early Friday. Multiple reports said that D’Orio, 37, was asking customers at the bodega to buy him beer — including Lopez. After a tense exchange between the two men, D’Orio goes off screen, takes off his shirt and again approaches Lopez, who responded by

Legendary jazz musician Miles Davis was remembered on Memorial Day when the city unveiled Miles Davis Way on the corner of 77th Street and West End Avenue. Davis lived on the Upper West Side block for almost 25 years. Hundreds of people turned out to take part in the festivities. Members of Miles Davis’ family participated in the celebration and jazz musicians came to commemorate the event. A street sign was hung up to usher in the name change. Miles Davis would have turned 88 on Monday. A block party in the area where he lived followed the celebration. ALLEN HOUSTON

Say cheese. Selfie helps police locate teen iPhone thieves A single selfie sent to a victim’s mother’s phone led to the arrest of two Brooklyn teens over the weekend after police circulated the photo of the suspects in connection to an iPhone robbery. Cops said the teens swiped another teenage boy’s iPhone on April 17 at 11:30 p.m. while at a venue on 48th Street in Hell’s Kitchen that was hosting an 18-and-under DJ party at the time. Khayyam Alexander, 16, turned himself over to
authorities on Saturday after police publicly released the selfie — a snapshot of the two teens with broad smiles as they rode the subway away from the Manhattan venue. Investigators said that Fethi Nekrouf, 18, was arrested on Sunday, although the circumstances of the arrest were not immediately clear. However, both teens face charges of petit larceny and of criminal possession of stolen property.

Victim’s father blames government ‘idiots’ as town mourns killings Grief. Those killed were all students at the University of California at Santa Barbara. With a California town grieving the deaths of six college students killed by a mentally ill man, one victim’s father on Monday blamed the killings on politicians who failed to tighten gun laws after a mass school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Richard Martinez, whose son Christopher Michael-Martinez, 20, was gunned down on Friday night in Isla Vista, California, said similar rampages would continue until lawmakers took action on gun control. “We’re all proud to be
Americans. But what kind of message does it send to the world when we have such a rudderless bunch of idiots in government? Martinez said on CNN. Elliot Rodger, 22, the son of a Hollywood director, fatally stabbed three people in his apartment before shooting three people dead near the University of California at Santa Barbara. He then shot himself. All of those killed were students at the school. Michael-Martinez, described by his father as articulate and tough, was shot inside a deli. He was the last in the killing spree to die. “These people are getting rich sitting in Congress. And what do they do? They don’t take care of our kids, he said. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said on Sunday he wanted to revive gun control legislation rejected by Congress in the wake of the 2012 Newtown, Connecticut, school massacre, saying it could have helped prevent this weekend’s deadly California shooting spree.
Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, said on CBS’s “Face the Nation program that the legislation, which failed last year, could be revised to emphasize the mental condition of potential gun buyers. “Obviously, not every kind of gun violence is going to be prevented by laws out of Washington, he said. “But at least we can
make a start, and I am going to urge that we bring back those bills, maybe reconďŹ gure them, center on mental health, which is a point where we can agree that we need more resources to make the country healthier and to make sure that these kinds of horriďŹ c, insane, mad occurrences are stopped. “And the Congress will be complicit if we fail in that,â€? he said. Work life. How two married artists afford living in the city What’s your primary job? I’m an import specialist for Customs & Border Protection. ... I have to make sure everything has the right paperwork and meets regulation. Most importantly, I collect revenue. They were recruiting at my college and I thought the money was pretty darn good! You also act on the side. What was your ďŹ rst audition? I’ve always loved acting, but when I came to America from Nigeria in 1995, I wasn’t thinking about it. I’m very African in the way I think: I need to know where my paycheck is coming from. But if you really love something, it never goes away. I used to read Backstage magazine and would see the auditions, but I would talk myself out of going because I had an accent and was curvy. One day, I saw there were auditions for a play set in Nigeria and I thought, “Now that I can do!â€? I came in with a fake rĂŠsumĂŠ, a Glamour Shots photo and a monologue that I hadn’t memorized. They looked at me like I was crazy, but I got the part! How do you go on auditions and work on projects while working full time? Where there’s a will, there’s a way. TIPS FROM EMPLOYERS FOR THE CLASS OF 2014 With a few million students graduating this month, there’s even more competition for jobs. The good news is that college hiring has increased by 7.8 percent relative to 2014, reports the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Still, it’s very competitive, and graduates have to work to stand out. In a new study in partnership with Beyond.com, Millenial Branding found that 73 percent of hiring managers felt that colleges are only “somewhat preparing students for the working world. Therefore, it’s on the students to figure out the best ways to win the recruiting game. Here are three tips based on the findings:

Prep for the SAT from the comfort of your own phone Study tips. High schoolers are utilizing apps to get ready for standardized tests. Put away your flash cards — a new crop of mobile apps is putting a 21st century twist on studying for the SAT. Until recently, the basics of standardized test preparation have been the same for generations: Get a bunch of review books, maybe take a prep course, and then sharpen your
pencils and dive into a pile of practice tests. But Mark Anestis is one of many educators and app developers who is working to change that. For 15 years, Anestis has been running The Learning Edge, a Connecticut-based tutoring company, and has created two study apps to help students tackle the sometimes daunting exams. “My philosophy with test prep is that it’s important that the kids enjoy what they are doing while doing it,” explains Anestis. The longtime tutor describes the SAT and ACT as “game-like” tests and
encourages his students to take a strategic approach to the exams. That philosophy led to SATLadder. Anestis says he was inspired by games like Words With Friends, which allow players to compete against each other, and by the fact that many of his students were seemingly glued to their smartphones. “Back in 1999, when I got started, [SAT prep] was all out of a book,” he says. “The reality is that these kids are mobile. They spend a lot of time in the car going to activities and are always on the move.”
14
Test prep is going digital with these new apps. / WAVEBREAK MEDIA Vocabulary builder
Study those words Anestis has also developed an app that focuses solely on the vocabulary section of the SAT. The Daily Word ($2.99) is exactly what its title suggests: It will notify students each morning of the vocabulary word of the day. “The hardest part of studying for the SAT is learning all of the vocabulary,” Anestis notes.
Here’s how the free game works: Students have the option of playing either head-to-head or in solo mode. Each round consists of one SAT question. The game not only judges whether players get the question right, but also how long it takes for them. “The way you get better at this test is practice, practice, practice,” says Anestis. “It’s crucial because you learn from your mistakes.” Every question comes with a detailed answer key, so students can review. High schoolers looking for other apps with which to study for the SAT
and ACT have other options as well. The College Board also has a free SAT Question of the Day app that uses real SAT questions and provides students with hints and detailed explanations. Anestis says that over the years he’s learned that there is a fairly even split between whether students need to focus their energy more on the math or verbal section. “Every student has a different need,” he says. As tuition continues to rise, grandparents come to the rescue Americans are expected not only to pay the daily bills and save for retirement but also put away enough for college for their kids, a task that’s increasingly difficult. Christina Ricci expecting Christina Ricci is going to be a mom. The “Addams Family” star is expecting her first child with husband James Heerdegen, she confirmed to Entertainment Tonight. The two met while making the shortlived TV series “Pan Am” in 2012 and tied the knot in October 2013 in a private ceremony in New York City. Ricci has done a remarkable job of keeping the pregnancy quiet; when she finally stepped out at LAX this weekend with her baby bump, she was pretty far along.

The world’s most-talkedabout couple are now the world’s most-talked-about married couple. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were married over the weekend in a lavish ceremony that seemed second only to royalty. Don’t let Kris Jenner hear us say that! Here is the lowdown on the high-society event.

Kanye surprised Kim at their pre-wedding celebration at Versailles with a live performance by one of Kim’s favorite singers, Lana Del Rey. John Legend and Italian opera singer Andrea Bocelli sang at the reception. Rumor has it that Kanye joined Big Sean on the mic, too.
Where does the couple who have been everywhere go on their honeymoon? Reports say the post-wedding getaway will be short since they’re due in Prague for Kanye’s stylist’s wedding next weekend. Rumor has it the newlyweds landed in Cork, Ireland, on Sunday and are staying at the fivestar Castlemartyr Resort in East Cork.
The drama Little brother Rob Kardashian allegedly flew home before the wedding for fear that the camera would add 10 more unwanted pounds. Kim’s bro was seen at LAX flying in from Europe BEFORE the big day. Reports also say that youngest sister Kylie Jenner, 16, was making out with Jaden Smith, 15, during the reception while Legend’s romantic ballad “All of Me” played.

The unexpected ‘blessings’ of family Fiction. Author Elise Juska reveals how art imitated life in her book. Families, with their complex relationships, forced love and enduring bonds, make for good stories. And Elise Juska’s novel, “The Blessings,” is exactly that. “The Blessings” centers on a big Irish-Catholic family living in northeast Philadelphia. At the center of this dynamic family is a man named John Blessing, who dies. Each family member — from his wife to his daughter to his parents — deals with his death in different ways, which the book gracefully explores. “I come from a close Irish-Catholic family, and
we had two uncles who died [young],” Juska tells us, calling from her native Philadelphia. “They were the core of my family for so long, so this was not a scenario I was unfamiliar with. It’s something I’ve tried to write about many times. This was my way of telling that story.” Juska says there are certain aspects of the book that were directly inspired by her own family, even if she didn’t realize it while she was writing. It comes across in the mannerisms of the grandmother, or a

While she was writing the book, her grandmother died, adding another layer of real-life grief to the fictional grief Juska was exploring. Despite the heaviness of the topic, she loved immersing herself in the Blessings’ world, and though the book has been published, she’s not quite done with them yet. “I really love these people. I hadn’t truly thought about writing about them again, but there’s been a lot of early feedback from readers saying there should be a sequel. That would be a great excuse to go back to the characters and see where they end up. I’m curious about the next generation. It’s possible.” EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

‘A butt and a rack’ Lloyd’s single “I Wish, which came out last fall, features T.I. and functioned as a bridge of sorts to prepare fans for her new material. There’s a line in the song that we couldn’t help but ask her
about: “I wish I woke up with a butt and a rack.â€? “Doesn’t every young girl wish for that? ‌ Of course they do,â€? she says. “That song for me was basically me revealing myself and saying I do wish for the things that I can’t have, and I think that’s relatable.â€?
next month, by the way.) “The main thing for me is that I have grown as a person, she continues. “Before, it was all similar sounds, and very pop and very young as well, and now I feel like I’m at the point where I’m able to express myself in a completely different way. The recent video for her “Sirens single is definitely a different way of expressing herself. It features a tearful Lloyd singing in the kitchen as the DEA barges in and arrests the bad boys who are involved in some nondescript illegal narcotic activity in her dining room. “It’s not necessarily bubblegum pop, says the singer about the new material. When talking further about the different sound, Lloyd says she credits the change to her increased involvement in making “Sorry I’m Late. “Every song on this album was picked by me, not by guys in suits, she says. When we ask Lloyd if her song, “M.F.P.O.T.Y. (it stands for Mother F— ing Party Of The Year) is a contender for this year’s Song of the Summer, she is humble. “I’m not sure, she says. “I’m the type of artist that lets something go and do its own thing because I know my fans are really passionate. And it will possibly be their song for the summer. PAT HEALY @metrousmusic

Small pleasures
Montpelier, Vermont With a population of about 8,000, Montpelier is the nation’s smallest state capital, but it makes up for its diminutive size with its independent spirit and rustic charm. This is a great city to sample New England specialties: Try the maple syrup at Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks, cheese at Cabot Creamery and whatever’s on the menu at the New England Culinary Institute.

New England. Summer is the season to take in everything the region is known for in these five cities.

BELUGA WHALE NALUARK AT MYSTIC AQUARIUM GETTY IMAGES
Mystic, Connecticut Halfway between New York City and Boston, Mystic has plenty of coastal attractions. The historic town is home to Mystic Seaport, the world’s largest maritime museum with over 500 vessels, including the last remaining whale ship in the world. At the Mystic Aquarium, you can see New England’s only beluga whales, plus penguins, seals, sea lions and plenty of other aquatic animals. Embrace the kitschy side of town at the Olde Mistick Village, where you’ll find souvenirs and homemade fudge at Franklin’s General Store.
As summer approaches, sleepy towns across New England begin to wake up from winter hibernation. With flowers in bloom and leafy trees covering the mountains, summer is the best season to visit New England (and the only time to enjoy its pristine beaches) for biking, sailing and enjoying the delicious seafood New England is known for. Here are five of the most scenic small cities and towns for summer fun, food, history and culture.
Newport, Rhode Island Gilded Age tycoons flocked to the charming seaside city of Newport to build their summer “cottages” at the turn of the century. Early examples of these homes — such as Isaac Bell’s shingled house — actually resemble cottages. With the arrival of the Vanderbilts came opulent mansions modeled on European palaces. Though the mansions are Newport’s claim to fame, there’s plenty to do in this historic city.
Lenox, Massachusetts Home to the Tanglewood music festival, Lenox exudes mountain charm unique to the Berkshires. Winding roads twist and turn, enveloped by verdant canopies that open onto spectacular views of the rolling valleys dotted by farmhouses. The main attraction in Lenox is The Mount, Edith Wharton’s country estate, built in 1902. Three acres of formal gardens complement the home, providing a beautiful backdrop for a stroll.
Portsmouth, New Hampshire The charming coastal city of Portsmouth was originally settled in 1623 as Strawbery Banke, and its colonial legacy lives on at the Strawbery Banke Museum. This 10-acre living history exhibit proudly displays houses, gardens, shops and taverns from the 1600s and 1700s. In fact, the whole town is full of colonial, Federal, Georgian and Victorian house museums. Modernday amusements include laid-back pubs serving local craft beer to a lively local music scene. Kings of Cole launches adorable kids’ line
Fall preview. Get a sneak peek at these comfy and cute clothes for kids. Kings of Cole was founded in 2010 to give people the option of wearing comfy lounge wear while still looking chic. They won customers over with their touch-me fabrics and cool, casual looks. Now, the brand is extending that fashion philosophy to kids’ clothes. Launching this fall, boys and girls will get to wear the same cool styles as their parents: acid-wash hoodies, camo leggings and lounge wear with fun graphics. All the styles can be dressed up or down, so kids can wear them to school and out on the playground. Get your first look at the pieces here. The new kids’ collection will be available starting in August at KingsofCole.com.

Parenting by the book ‘The Kids Will Be Fine: Guilt-Free Motherhood for Thoroughly Modern Women’
From how not to raise a spoiled brat to sounding knowledgeable in a conversation with your teen about “Divergent,” these three new releases provide a handy cheat sheet to the whole parenting thing.
‘Her Next Chapter’ This is a great book to spark some dialogue about real issues teen girls face, using popular media as the conversation starter. Author Lori Day offers up movies and books to watch and read with your daughter, plus some questions about issues that matter, such as gender stereotypes, sexism, bullying and relationships. Expect a mix of buzzy books and movies you’ll both be excited to get into that will help you become closer than ever.

Through funny yet informed essays, writer Daisy Waugh argues that you don’t have to pre-chew your toddler’s food or spend thousands of dollars on the best preschool in your city for your child to turn out OK. The takeaway is that kids are pretty darn resilient, and although of course you want to help them grow into responsible, caring adults, you don’t have to obsess over it.
‘Permission to Parent: How to Raise Your Child with Love and Limits’
If you want to give your child everything a young heart desires without turning him or her into a spoiled brat, this is the parenting guidebook for you. Psychiatrist Robin Berman advises parents on how to strike a healthy balance between excessive praise or catering to
a child’s every need and being neglectful or dismissive. It’s great for new or not-so-new parents.

The activity that puts pregnant women at risk New study. How to avoid putting yourself and your baby in danger. Being pregnant can — and rightly so — get you out of a lot of things. Don’t feel like going to a dinner party? Late for work? Your oven bun is the perfect excuse. Now, there’s another thing it can help you get out of: driving. According to a new study, pregnant women have more car crashes than their nonpregnant peers. The study compared the number of car crashes women had during their pregnancies with the number they had before and after they were pregnant. The women were monitored for four years; researchers concluded that most of the crashes occurred while they were

Women who experience “pregnancy brain often momentarily forget how to do something that is usually routine for them, or they might zone out temporarily. But despite the risk, the study notes that young

Nothing angers me more than when people in the media compare that mediocre Jeb Bush to the great Hillary Clinton. First of all, the Bushes are a political dynasty; the Clintons are not. The Clintons are a team. The dictionary definition of a dynasty is a family of rulers who rule over a country for a long period of time. There have been four generations of Bushes and one generation of Clintons. Hillary Clinton has been the most dominant political figure of the last 20 years (and that includes her husband). How many books or covers of magazines has Jeb Bush appeared on? Hillary Clinton is one of the most famous wom-

en in the world and the most respected woman in the United States. The only time Jeb Bush achieved national prominence is when he used Nazi tactics to steal the presidency for his worthless dim-witted brother. Otherwise, very few people know who Jeb Bush is on a national level. Unlike Hillary, there is no grassroots support for Jeb Bush except among the media and the donor class. If Hillary Clinton was elected president, it would be a milestone in U.S. election history because electing the first female president and breaking that glass ceiling would be historic. NHL playoffs. The Rangers have a chance to close out the conference finals in Game 5 on Tuesday night.
The Rangers made a habit of playing a man down in Game 4. Overtime win aside, they’d like to play with five players on the ice in Game 5. The Blueshirts have a chance to clinch their first trip to the Stanley Cup Finals since 1994 Tuesday night on the road in Montreal. But they’ll have to be more disciplined to do so. “We were definitely undisciplined,” Carl Hagelin said after the Game 4 win. “We took a few too many tripping and highsticking calls. The refs are always going to call those. We have got to play smarter in [Game 5] but we did a great job on the [penalty kill].” The Canadiens were on the power play eight times for more than 14 minutes of game time. And the Rangers allowed just one score, tempered by a short-handed goal of their own by Hagelin. The Rangers are 12-1

all time in series in which they lead 3-1. But that one loss came fairly recently — in 2009 against the Capitals. There aren’t a lot of players remaining from that team, but Henrik Lundqvist started in net and Marc Staal and Dan Girardi were also regulars. A veteran-laden squad should also help out with any fears over the Rangers taking it easy and letting the series slip away. After all, they were just on the other side of a 1-3 deficit against the Penguins. “I remember sitting in here down 3-1 against Pittsburgh,” Brad Richards said. “They will feel bad [Sunday], but [Tuesday] they will wake up in front of their home crowd and once that game starts, 3-1, you throw that out the window and it is back in the battle again.” It’s no surprise the players would repeat the “one game at a time” mantra, though. “We are obviously up 3-1, but we know how that can turn if we don’t do the things we need to do,” Hagelin said. “Our focus now is on the next game.” MARK OSBORNE @MetroNYSports

Derek Stepan traveled with the team to Montreal for Game 5, but it still appears unlikely the forward will play. Stepan broke his jaw on a hit by Brandon Prust in Game 3 and did not attend Game 4. Head coach Alain Vigneault didn’t count out Stepan entirely, though. “I couldn’t say right now,” Vigneault told reporters at Monday’s media availability. “I have no idea.” Canadiens goalie Carey Price actually skated with his teammates Monday, but is still ruled out for the rest of the series. Hill talks growth, literal and mental, in offseason NFL. Jets receiver Stephen Hill has been a target of complaining fans, but he says he’s improved. Stephen Hill says he’s spent this offseason growing as a football player. But physically, the Jets wide receiver is still growing too. The wide receiver looked to be improving during last season’s training camp after a rookie season marred by mistakes and dropped passes. He was drafted as a raw wide receiver out of an option offense at Georgia Tech, and he was supposed to grow by leaps and bounds in his second season. But the results were mixed for Hill. Part of the problem was a knee injury which ended his season after his strong start. “I’ve been working hard this offseason — working hard to make

2013, he had 13 receptions for 233 yards and a touchdown. Then, his form tapered off, including a three-game stretch during the middle of the year where he was booed and criticized by Jets fans for failing to register one catch. Of course, during that three-game drought he also wasn’t targeted.
But even though he went through a down stretch and ended the season early with a knee injury, Hill still registered more catches and receiving yards in 2013 than during his rookie year. Now he heads into this pivotal offseason needing to prove himself again with the free-agent additions of Eric Decker and Jacoby Ford. He has spent the past few months getting stronger and rehabbing, but also improving his technique. He didn’t drop many passes last year, but he struggled to find separation against elite cornerbacks.
