Remy pleads guilty to girlfriend’s slaying Life in prison. Jared Remy said people should blame him, not his family, for his girlfriend’s death. Jared Remy, the son of Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, pleaded guilty Tuesday morning to murdering his girlfriend Jennifer Martel last year. Remy, 35, changed his plea during a pre-trial hearing at Middlesex Superior Court. He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, assault on Martel, assaulting a man trying to stop the attack and violating a restraining order. He will spend his life in prison without the possibility of parole.
During his sentencing, Remy read a brief statement in which he told people to blame him, not his family, and said, “If you ask my family, they’d rather have me dead than her.” “I would like you to know that I always told Jen she could leave, but do not threaten me with my daughter. That night, Jen had a knife in her hand and threatened me with my daughter, so I killed her,” Remy said. “I don’t think it’s right when women use their kids against their fathers.” In a victim impact statement read by their lawyer, Martel’s family said they wanted to get the word out about domestic violence and that they see signs now that they didn’t before. Martel’s neighbor, Kristina Flickinger Hill, who witnessed

She saw the best in everyone, even though that might have killed her,” Hill said. So the judge would accept the plea change, a prosecutor recounted in heart-wrenching detail Remy’s brutal attack on Martel. The prosecutor said the fatal attack took place just minutes after Martel changed her Facebook relationship status to “Complicated.” A neighbor who heard
the commotion and screams looked out of her apartment and saw a wounded Martel who said, according to a prosecutor: “Help me. Please help me.” Remy then strangled Martel as she pushed against him, repeatedly stabbed her, slashed at her throat and punched her, the prosecutor said. Remy sat on the witness stand expressionless as the prosecutor read the details. MICHAEL NAUGHTON @MetroBosMike

Hernandez associate makes not-guilty plea

An associate of ex-New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez pleaded not guilty in Fall River Superior Court on Tuesday to helping the football star and a third man fatally shoot a man last June. Carlos Ortiz, 28, faces a murder charge in the killing of Odin L. Lloyd, 27, of Dorchester, whose bullet-
riddled body was found in an industrial park near Hernandez’s North Attleborough home. Ortiz, who hails from Hernandez’ hometown of Bristol, Connecticut, is being held without bail and a pre-trial conference is set for Sept. 24. He also pleaded not guilty earlier to an accessory charge.
Hernandez, 24, has pleaded not guilty to murder and weapons charges in Lloyd’s death, and is also being held without bail. Earlier this month, he was indicted for a July 2012 drive-by shooting in Boston’s South End. Hernandez is due to be arraigned today on that double-murder charge. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

Proposed gun bill could make state ‘most effective’ Gun control. A “comprehensive” bill introduced Tuesday will soon be debated. All secondary gun sales in Massachusetts would need to take place at licensed gun dealers and the state would come into compliance with the National Instant Criminal Check System, under a gun bill introduced Tuesday morning. House Speaker Robert DeLeo introduced the bill, which prohibits a convicted felon from acquiring a firearms ID card. The bill, if passed, would make Massachusetts the “most effective

state in terms of gun laws.” Grafton Republican Rep. George Peterson, who over the years has promoted the rights of law-abiding gun owners, said he has a mixed opinion about the bill. “There are some good
things for the gun owners,”” said Peterson, who said there are also “an awful lot of new hurdles.” He said the bill does not change what type of hardware can be sold in the state. DeLeo said the bill will also establish “suitability standards” for people seeking an FID card for a shotgun or rifle. John Rosenthal, a gun owner and gun control advocate, said the law currently requires private sellers to check a person’s license and fill out paperwork, but it does not require a background check, which the bill would require. A public hearing on the bill is expected next Tuesday, then it may reach the House floor within a week. SHNS

Mass murder. Police defend their actions following California killings Students at the University of California at Santa Barbara returned to campus for a “day of mourning” on Tuesday, four days after the son of a Hollywood film director killed six students in a stabbing and shooting rampage across the seaside community. A memorial service was held Tuesday afternoon, just one day after police defended their actions in the case, saying they had no grounds to search the 22-year-old suspect’s home when they met with him in April over a report that he had posted disturbing videos. The disclosure that the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department sent deputies to Elliot Rodger’s door just weeks before Friday night’s shooting rampage has raised questions about whether police could have done more to prevent it. Rodger’s mother asked deputies on April 30 to check on him at his apartment in

Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown has said that deputies found Rodger to be polite and courteous during the encounter and that he did not appear to meet the criteria to be held on mental health grounds. On Monday, sheriff’s spokeswoman Kelly Hoover declined to discuss that visit in greater detail, pending an internal investigation, but said that deputies in general were barred from entering a residence without a warrant.

Recounting that visit in a 140-page manifesto he sent to friends and relatives shortly before the shooting began, Rodger said that if the seven deputies at his door had searched his room, they would have found the firearms he had hidden there and denied him the chance to carry out his violent plans.

Malaysia, UK firm release satellite data on missing plane Malaysia’s government and British satellite ďŹ rm Inmarsat on Tuesday released data used to determine the path of missing Flight MH370, responding to a clamor from passengers’ relatives for greater transparency. The data from satellite communications with the plane, which runs to 47 pages in a report prepared by Inmarsat, features hourly “handshakesâ€? — or network log-on conďŹ rmations — after the aircraft disappeared from civilian radar screens on March 8. The data’s release had become a rallying cry for many of the families, who have accused the Malaysian government of holding back information. Families are hoping that opening up the data to a wider range of experts can help verify the plane’s last location. REUTERS

Ukrainian aircraft and paratroopers killed more than 50 pro-Russian rebels in an assault that raged into a second day on Tuesday after a newly elected president vowed to crush the revolt in the east once and for all. The unprecedented offensive throws a challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has said he reserves the right to defend Russian speakers under threat, but whose past assertions that Kiev is led by an illegitimate “junta were undermined by the landslide election victory of billionaire Petro Poroshenko. Jenner needs to let it go Not all Kardashian-related romances work out like Kanye and Kim. While Harry Styles and Kendall Jenner’s brief romance has been over for months, Jenner reportedly “just can’t get him out of her head” and hasn’t stopped calling the One Direction star “despite their romance fizzing out months ago,” according to Star magazine. “Now Kendall desperately wants him back. She loved the attention dating Harry gave her, plus she really fell for him big time,” a source says. “Kendall really opened up to him and he did nothing but use her. That hasn’t stopped her from dreaming of a rematch, and after a night out with the girls she’ll come home and start calling him. Harry rarely takes her calls because he knows when he’s pushed his luck when it comes to a woman’s heart, and Kendall’s got it bad for him. He doesn’t want to encourage her, but it’s turning into an embarrassing situation — for both of them.” NED EHRBAR
Kim Kardashian’s wedding gown has been revealed, and it’s nothing short of incredible. The Givenchy Haute Couture gown, designed by the house’s creative director Riccardo Tisci, was everything it was rumored to be. Kim’s curves were hugged in gorgeous handmade lacework with sheer cutouts on her sides, down her arms and her back, only covered up by a long, silk veil. Kim Instagrammed two pictures Tuesday morning — one of she and new husband Kanye West walking back down the aisle and another of the newlyweds kissing in front of a wall of white and gold flowers.

Macaulay Culkin’s band booed off the stage It was a “Blues Brothers” moment for actor Macaulay Culkin and his band Pizza Underground on Sunday at the Dot to Dot Festival in Nottingham, England, when fans turned on the comedy cover group by booing them and throwing beer onstage. Unfortunately, Mac couldn’t turn it around with a pizzathemed version of “Rawhide” to get the crowd going; the “Home Alone” star and the rest of Pizza Underground allegedly walked off the stage smelling like booze after only three songs — but not before they performed a cover of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day,” calling it “Pizza Day.” Culkin’s band covers Velvet Underground and Lou Reed songs, but changes the lyrics around to be about pizza. Courteney thinks she’s loud and crass, while Jen thinks Courteney is taking things too seriously and is acting like a jealous teenager. It’s gotten to the point where neither one of them wants to make the effort to keep the friendship going,” the source explains. “It’s really sad, but the friendship has basically evaporated.” NED EHRBAR

What does it take to attract a Tony-winning director to the circus? If you’re Diane Paulus, artistic director at Cambridge’s American Repertory Theater, it takes no more than an invitation. Paulus, who directed the Cirque du Soleil show “Amaluna, which opens tomorrow at the Marine Industrial Park, says she’d been “a huge admirer of their work for years. The show premiered in Montreal in 2012, but journeyed widely before making its way to Boston. Another contributing factor? Cirque indicated that they wanted this show to be “an homage to women, per Paulus. The cast is 70 percent women and has an all-female band, both of which are highly unusual for the company. Paulus created the story herself, drawing inspiration from both Greek mythology and Shakespeare’s “The Tempest. “I was fascinated by the Demeter-Persephone myth, mothers and daughters, and the idea of [the] life cycle and renewal, she says. “I thought about Miranda from ‘The Tempest’ as kind of an archetypal character coming of age. And I thought, ‘Well, what if Prospero became Prospera and it was a queen and her daughter?’ Cirque usually has multinaIf you go

tional casts, and this show is no exception. Performers hail from 17 countries, which Paulus calls “one of the most challenging and ultimately most rewarding aspects of the entire show. Rehearsals took place in an airplane hanger near Cirque HQ in Montreal, with the set already in place. “You’re directing on a mic, because it’s an enormous space and that is the only way anyone can hear you. So I would say on the mic, ‘OK, everybody, let’s take it from the top,’ and immediately I would hear in four different languages, Japanese, Chinese Spanish and Russian, instant translations over the microphone to the artists so that they can hear, explains Paulus. Although Paulus says working with acrobats instead of, say, Bryan Cranston, is in some
ways similar, there are also some big differences. “They can’t repeat the most difficult tricks over and over,â€? she says. In play rehearsals, actors can keep redoing scenes, but with Cirque, “It’s almost like [working with] an Olympic athlete,â€? Paulus says. “You just can’t work that way with this level of physical duress.â€? And of course, it’s fun to play with the idea of being in a circus. “When you’re on site in the tent, it really is a tent. You camp out with the company, you eat [in a] cafeteria, which is on a truck bed, and it’s all on-site,â€? she says. “It’s that feeling of the circus coming to town.â€? ‘Red River’ Of Howard Hawks’ Westerns starring John Wayne, “Rio Bravo” tends to get the most love, but “Red River” might be the deeper film. It’s a snaky cattle drive picture that quietly explores friendship and loyalty and features one of Wayne’s more intimidating performances.

A decade ago “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” was Wes Anderson’s first boondoggle — a costly Christmas Day release that turned out to be his most dense and inaccessible film to date. Such films don’t offer instant gratification but rather require time to sit. Upon deeper reflection and repeat viewings, it’s still not his most enjoyable film — that would be his most recent, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” — but it’s possibly his most thoughtful. It sneaks up on you. Bill Murray had played quiet depressives in “Rushmore” and “The Royal Tenenbaums.” As Steve Zissou, a Jacques Cousteau-style populist marine biologist, he’s more animated. He’s still depressed:

His best friend (Seymour Cassel) has been eaten by a “jaguar shark,” and he’s also being eaten away by fears of obsolescence. His best days, he fears, are behind him. Throughout the film Anderson plays with manufactured worlds (obvious sets, matching costumes, invented aquatic life forms) running against reality. The
film has pirates and grand ocean voyages, but the pirates are the real, unromanticized kind, and the funds to sail are always on the verge of running out. It’s telling that throughout Anderson’s costliest film is a constant worry about money. Anderson is often criticized for disappearing into his own worlds. But his films
are about exploring the idea of how we create realities for ourselves to stave off the pain of real life. “The Life Aquatic” is just the one that puts this front and center.

ON THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE BED

Between the sheets. Give your bed a summer wardrobe swap with these tips. There’s nothing like waking up to a beautiful summer day while swathed in cool, crisp, daisy-fresh bedding. Unfortunately, not just any set of sheets is going to do the trick. Selecting linens is like selecting anything you invite into your bed: If you just pick the prettiest pattern and fall for slick packaging, you’re in for a morning of sweaty regret.

Shieh. “Thread count does matter, but only up to 430. With higher thread count, you get finer threads, which results in a softer and smoother fabric. After around 430, additional thread count can only be achieved through ‘creative’ manufacturing methods — which do not add to a higher quality product.
We hit up designer Karin Shieh — co-founder of Crane & Canopy bedding — for some tips on waking up on the right side of the bed this summer.
Fabric matters “Linen, jersey and 100 percent cotton are all lovely fabrics for warm summer nights, says Shieh. “At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference. While linen and jersey both breathe and insulate well, they have some disadvantages. Linen is difficult to iron and wash, wrinkles easily and is not as soft. Jersey wears out quickly, stretches out and retains body odors. What you should never bed: polyester or polyester-cotton blends, which get sweaty and stick to your skin.

Once the gold standard for sheets, “thread count is now a suspect buzz phrase on a par with “all-natural and “ecofriendly. “In recent years, it has become a more meaningless marketing claim, says
“There is nothing as crisp or classic as the all-white bed. But for the warmer months, if you aren’t already beach- or lakeside, choose a color or pattern that sets the tone for summer,â€? suggests Shieh. “Colors such as Newport blues, chic yellows and seafoam green bring an element of happiness that contrasts with the summer heat.â€? Don’t re-buy, just revamp Deck. Pick up some screws and a can of wood primer to revive your weathered patio furniture on the cheap. Fixing tatty old patio furniture instead of buying new has three bonuses: It’s less expensive, less stuff goes to the landfill, and it’s fun to reimagine and repaint chairs and tables. We asked two experts for tips on revamping furniture to last for years. “Most broken or loose parts on wood patio furniture are the result of failed glue joints, broken wood or a loose screw,” says Rockler’s DIY project specialist Dan Cary. Make sure to use the right waterproof or wa-
ter-resistant glue and exteriorrated screws. Sand wood surfaces to make a tight connection. “Apply a thin layer of glue to both surfaces and clamp them together until the glue has cured,” says Cary. “If the pieces don’t fit together perfectly, use a two-part structural epoxy.” Replace missing or loose screws with longer or slightly thicker ones, or drive a new screw near the previous one. “Avoid splitting wood by pre-drilling with a tapered countersink bit,” says Cary. “That also leaves the screw head flush, making the repair look clean and eliminating the risk of catching clothing or scratching skin.” Rusted metal-framed loungers look good as new and last longer with the right care. Decorating company Farrow
& Ball’s creative director Sarah Cole says, “Remove all rust with sandpaper and a wire brush, and then paint with metal primer. Leave the primer one week to fully dry and harden, then lightly sand and apply a coat of metal primer and undercoat before your topcoat color.” Good care saves wood, too. “Paint is unlikely to adhere properly to chipped or rotten wood and may result in peeling or blistered paint,” says Cole. “Remove and burn back anything that’s become loose using a blowtorch before thoroughly sanding. Apply a layer of exterior wood primer and undercoat in the correct color to help paint adhere and make it more durable. Then, apply a layer of exterior eggshell thinned with 10 percent water before applying your final topcoat.”

Snoopy for president
Further, half of the victims (Elliot Rodger rightly discounted as a “victim”) were stabbed to death. What was Congress supposed to do? Institute a five-day waiting period to purchase a kitchen knife? It’s not, and never has been, the gun, but always the hand that wields it that is to blame for these atrocities. But, sure, let’s just focus on the tool, since it’s a lot easier to legislate against an inanimate object than to focus on the “icky” truth that, invariably, mental illness is the driving force behind these events when they occur.
Re: ‘Victim’s father blames government “idiots” as town mourns killings’ (Metro, May 27) While what befell Christopher Michael-Martinez is indeed tragic, I question his father’s claim that its proximate cause was the NRA or the “failure” of Congress to enact any further gun-control laws after Sandy Hook. California is ranked by the Brady Campaign as having the strictest gun laws in the nation, touting its “A-” ranking to all who will listen.
Re: ‘Elect Clinton for historical significance’ (Metro, May 27) Letter writer Reba Shimansky makes powerful and cogent arguments for electing, to the highest office in the land, Snoopy. He has appeared in newspapers, magazines, books and television, he is internationally recognized and he has widespread appeal. He even has military experience! To paraphrase Ms. Shimansky’s circular reasoning: “If Snoopy were elected president, it would

be a milestone in U.S. election history because electing the first canine president and breaking through that doggie-door would be historic.” Snoopy’s leadership abilities and executive experience far exceed Hillary [Clinton’s]. Giants (32-18) The Giants continue to roll, winners of four straight and seven of their last 10 games, to put them back at the top spot in the rankings. Their plus-42 run differential is tied for best in the NL as they’ve outscored their opponents 25-13 in their last five games. The Giants will continue their series with the Cubs before going on the road for games against the Cardinals and Reds.

There is no hotter team in the AL than the Blue Jays right now as they’ve won seven games in a row and now sit atop the AL East. Toronto is led by its offense as it has belted 73 home runs.
In most other divisions, the Athletics would be running away with things, but the Angels haven’t allowed that to happen in the AL West. The Halos are averaging 4.84 runs per game, third in the AL.
The Yankees are in the middle of the pack in a number of categories, both offensively and defensively, but have won seven of their last 10 games. New York hosts the Twins this coming weekend.
The Mariners had a great deal of success for a few weeks but have fallen back to Earth. Offense is the issue in Seattle as its .234 batting average is the worst in the American League.

Milwaukee is in the midst of its first slump of 2014 as it has lost seven of its last 10. The Brewers’ pitching has let them down of late as they’ve allowed five or more runs in five of their last eight games.
After sweeping the Red Sox a week and a half ago, things have gone south for Detroit. They’ve lost seven of their last 10 and have been outscored 34-6 in their last three outings.
The Marlins continue to surprise many in the baseball world, but they do need to start playing better on the road soon as they’re just 7-17 away from Marlins Park this season.
The White Sox are in second place in the AL Central, one of the worst divisions in baseball if you exclude Detroit. Chicago’s power has been well publicized, but their pitching needs work.

Royals (24-26)
The Cards’ pitching has regained their form as they currently hold a 3.24 team ERA. St. Louis is in the early portion of an eight-game homestand as they have the Giants and Royals coming up.
After Josh Beckett’s no-hitter on Sunday and with Hyun-Jin Ryu just six outs away from a perfect game the following day, the Dodgers could be building some great momentum in the NL West.
After losing four of five games, the Orioles have gotten things back on track, winning three of their last four. The O’s need to improve upon their 4.16 team ERA.
Kansas City has lost six of its last 10 games and isn’t performing the way many expected them to after two months. The Royals offense, averaging just 3.92 runs per game, has been underperforming.

Athletics (31-20)
Braves (28-21)
Rockies (27-23)
Rangers (26-25)
Nationals (25-26)
Oakland continues to play steady ball in the AL. The A’s plus-100 run differential blows away any other team in baseball by more than 50 runs. Their starting pitchers also have the best ERA in baseball.
It has been much of the same for the Braves as their starting pitching continues to pave the way with a 2.95 ERA. Their lack of offensive power is holding them back from opening up a large lead in the NL East.
If there were any doubts about the Rockies and their strong start, those have been put to rest. Colorado’s hitting has proven itself to be elite, but its pitching (4.19 ERA) still needs to improve.
The Rangers have started to play better of late now that that a few players have returned from injuries. But their pitching, currently with a 4.33 team ERA, will need to get more consistent.
Washington seems to be on its way to another underachieving season, losing seven of its last 10 games. The Nats’ offense will need to be jumpstarted if they want to make a postseason run.

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter may receive a starting nod for the American League All-Star team as he is currently the leading vote-getter at his position. Jeter has the third most votes overall in the AL, behind only Toronto’s Jose Bautista and the Angels’ Mike Trout. Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was the leading vote-getter at DH. Dustin Pedroia and A.J. Pierzynski were also leading vote-getters at their respective positions. Fans can vote up until July 4.

MLB. Red Sox interested in making trade for center fielder: Report It’s clear that the Red Sox need some help on the heels of their 10-game losing streak. According to WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford, that help could soon come in the form of a new outfielder. The Red Sox front office is continuing to “explore the outfield trade market” particularly in center field to take some pressure of the struggling Jackie Bradley Jr., according to Bradford. MLB. Braves-Red Sox rare home-and-home series shifts to Fenway The Red Sox will again play the Braves on Wednesday, but this time it will be at Fenway Park as the two teams begin the second portion of a rare home-and-home series. Celtics looking for Love this summer NBA. The C’s have the best package of assets to acquire the T’Wolves’ All-Star power forward. Nanoseconds after NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum pulled the leprechaun out of the white envelope last week to reveal that the Celtics would be picking sixth overall in the 2014 draft, the Twitter call for Kevin Love-to-Boston sounded. Boston won’t be selecting in the Top 3, which is where most pundits believe the sure-fire AllStars lie. Though the odds say that whomever is selected sixth overall in this “deep draftâ€? will be, at the very least, a starter on an NBA team for years to come — the road for a Celtics championship build would seem to be easier right now if Love were involved. Make no mistake, the C’s are the favorite to make a trade for Love this summer. They have the most assets — particularly nine first-round picks in the next five years — to swing a deal. They can also dangle young players with great upside like Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk in any deal.
Not too shabby

The Celtics have drafted No. 6 overall three times in franchise history. The ďŹ rst time, in 1978, they had their most luck, landing Larry Bird. In 1996 they picked Antoine Walker, and in 1997 they selected Ron Mercer.

Love is one of the better rebounders in the game. He averaged a league-leading 15.2 rebounds per game in the 2010-11 season. His rebounding totals haven’t dropped o, as he was third in the NBA this past season.

Timberwolves All-Star forward Kevin Love reportedly wants out of Minnesota, and the Celtics may be interested. / GETTY IMAGES
The Lakers have emerged as a possible destination for Love, but all indications are that if that is to happen it will happen next summer when the T’Wolves forward would be a free agent. Los Angeles simply doesn’t have enough assets to land Love this summer and although the California-bred Love would likely jump at the chance to play in L.A., he does not have full control of the situation as it stands now.

In fact, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge told 98.5 The Sports Hub last week he would take a risk on trading for a superstar player in the last year of a contract even without the guarantee that he would re-sign. Love does not have a no-trade clause in his current contract. MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos
