Bulger’s handler

Corrupt former FBI agent’s murder case is overturned The corrupt FBI agent who shared information with James “Whitey” Bulger had his murder conviction in Florida overturned by an appeals court on Wednesday.

The Third District Court of Appeal in Florida issued a split opinion on former FBI agent John Connolly’s case. The court granted Connolly’s request for a rehearing, vacated the conviction and ordered him to be discharged, but his release will be stayed until postappeal motions are final.

Connolly, after his sentencing in 2002 / GETTY IMAGES

Connolly was sentenced to 40 years in prison following his 2005 indictment that accused him of being involved in the murder of businessman John Callahan. Bulger associate John Martorano fatally shot Callahan in 1982. He was indicted on firstdegree murder, but a jury found him guilty of second-

degree murder as a lesser included offense of first-degree murder. That finding was then reclassified to a life felony, not barred by the statute of limitation. Connolly appealed that reclassification and the court agreed, saying it appeared to “circumvent the statute of limitation.” MICHAEL NAUGHTON

Ex-New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez allegedly shot and killed two men in July 2012 because he was angry one of them bumped into him at a South End nightclub hours earlier, prosecutors claimed at his arraignment in Suffolk Superior Court on Wednesday. Shackled and wearing a dark jacket and green necktie, Hernandez, 24, pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other related charges in the drive-by shooting deaths of Daniel de Abreu, 28, and Safiro Furtado, 29. According to prosecutors, the pair’s only crime was offending the apparently narcissistic football star. Assistant District Attorney Patrick Haggan said that in the time leading up to the shoot-

ing, Hernandez was angry that people were “testing, trying or otherwise disrespecting him when he frequented nightclubs in the area.” After arriving at Cure Lounge on the night of July 15, Hernandez allegedly became enraged when de Abreu bumped into him while dancing, causing him to spill his drink. He allegedly told a friend who was with him that he felt he was “being targeted and disrespected” and that Abreu was “trying him,” Haggan said. Later, Hernandez allegedly followed the car that Abreu and Furtado were riding in, pulled up alongside them, aimed a revolver and said “Yo what’s up now [racial slur]?” He then allegedly shot them dead and injured another man in the backseat, then fled to Connecticut. He was ordered held without bail, and is due to return to court on June 24.

Defense

Media spectacle? After Haggan laid out the allegations, Defense Attorney Charlie Rankin slammed the court for allowing what he described as a “speech” that played to the media and poisoned the potential jury pool. “The court has just played along with that. This is not supposed to be a spectacle. … It’s not fair,” he fumed. “Just give us a fair trial, not one tainted by unfair, onesided, unnecessary prejudicial publicity.” Clerk Magistrate Gary Wilson spurned Rankin’s claim, saying, “I was not going to preclude the Commonwealth from telling the court about the case presented today. … I could not envision a proceeding when the press would not be invited to attend. We do not operate behind closed doors.”

A young child died after he fell from a Dorchester building Wednesday morning. Police were called to 131 Columbia Road just before 10 a.m., according to a Boston police spokeswoman. Police deny reports of ‘Boston Tickler’ among BC students Not tickled. Officials set the record straight after national news outlets picked up a local story. Boston police are denying reports of a serial tickler terrorizing a Brighton neighborhood popular with Boston College students. Boston.com reported Tuesday that a man has been breaking into homes near the college and tickling people in their sleep, and that there have been at least 10 sightings of the socalled Tickler over the last two years. The story went viral, and by Wednesday had been picked up by The Huffington Post,

Gawker and the Daily Mail. But BC spokesman Jack Dunn said that the Tickler appears to be a hoax, “or a case of reporting error.” “There were no reports of any students tickled in offcampus apartments made to the Boston College police, BC student affairs or the Boston police,” Dunn said. Boston police officer Rachel McGuire also rebuffed reports, saying, “We do have a handful of reports of incidents in the area … but there is no tickling.” The report quoted BPD Sgt. Michael O’Hara as saying, “This is no myth. … It’s happening.” McGuire said O’Hara was referring to home invasions occurring due to unlocked doors, and was saying “it’s not a myth that people who leave their doors unlocked may have un-

Child welfare crisis

Report outlines fixes needed at DCF An independent expert group charged with probing the Department of Children and Families said on Wednesday that it lacked the evidence to know for sure whether the death of

5-year-old Jeremiah Oliver could have been prevented. While the long-awaited report from the Child Welfare League of America found no evidence to suggest that the failures of DCF social workers and supervisors to properly oversee the Oliver family led to

the death of Jeremiah, CWLA vice president Linda Spears said DCF should have known sooner that Oliver was missing. The 77-page report, which cost the state $150,000, includes dozens of recommendations to update “grossly out-of-date” case management policies. SHNS

Boston spots make mag’s ‘Best Bars in America’ listing Drink up. Two Boston bars were among dozens of pubs on Esquire’s 2014 list. A pair of Boston bars are some of the best in America, according to one magazine. J.J. Foley’s Bar & Grille and The Hawthorne were named to Esquire’s annual Best Bars in America list. Foley’s has survived the ongoing transformation of Downtown Crossing and the eradication of the nearby Combat Zone, the magazine said, adding that visitors should have a Guinness. “Thank God there’s Foley’s, a survivor from the bad old days. Not that it’s bad, or even all that tough. The bartenders are actually friendly and the regulars tolerant. Plus the pints are well poured, the food decent (get the steak tips), and the space big enough to remain uncrowded even when busy. And best of all, it has no media strategy, marketing plan, or corporate mixologist.” MICHAEL NAUGHTON @MetroBosMike

Hidden cash. Hub area entrepreneur wants credit for Twitter giveaway idea The co-founder of a nearly 3-year-old Boston cash giveaway said he thinks the person behind the recent West Coast “Hidden Cash” craze should give the Hub entrepreneurs credit. The Twitter handle @hiddencash exploded in popularity this month after it posted clues and pictures of envelopes stuffed with cash that were placed in various spots around San Francisco and other Bay Area locations. Followers then try to be the first one to the location to claim the cash. The Twitter profile describes the giveaway as “an anonymous social experiment for good.” But since 2011, Steven Grant

where they stash $20 for someone to find. In a 2011 interview, Grant told Metro their venture started as a social experiment “just to see what happened.” On Tuesday, Grant said in a statement that he thought the West Coast version was great, but that credit is due. “I think it’s great what he or she or them is doing, making people’s days just like us. And it looks like they can give even more money away than we can,” Grant said in the statement. “I mean it’d be nice if he gave us credit for the idea though. He’s even calling it a social experiment, using clues, etc. But hey, that’s their prerogative.” MICHAEL NAUGHTON

American author and poet Maya Angelou, an eloquent commentator on race and gender best known for her groundbreaking autobiography “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” has died at age 86 in North Carolina. “She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace. The family is extremely appreciative of the time we had with her, and we know that she is looking down upon us with love,” her family said. Her latest work, “Mom & Me & Mom,” about her mother and grandmother and what they taught her, was released last year. In her last tweet on May 23,

Angelou said, “Listen to yourself and in that quietude you might hear the voice of God.” Literary and entertainment figures, politicians and fans mourned her passing on Wednesday. President Barack Obama called her “a brilliant writer, a fierce friend and a truly phenomenal woman.” “With a kind word and a strong embrace, she had the ability to remind us that we are all God’s children, that we all have something to offer,” Obama said in a statement. One Direction passes one doobie in leaked video To prepare for a gig in front of thousands of impressionable preteens, you can either: A. Warm up your vocals; B. Rest; or in One Direction’s case, C. Film yourself smoking marijuana. In a five-minute video obtained by the Daily Mail, Louis Tomlinson films his bandmate Zayn Malik as they both light up and smoke what appears to be a joint on a ride to their show in Peru. If there was any doubt that it may just be a cigarette they’re smoking, Tomlinson clears that right up with his nonstop references to marijuana. Not only does he call it a “joint,” “J” and “Mary J,” the musician also films policemen and states that they can smell the “illegal substance.” As expected, Twitter erupted with young girls devastated that their idols would ever touch the stuff. In an attempt to distract, bandmate Liam Payne, one of the three members not present in the video, tweeted out hashtag #WearAsManyClothesAsYou CanAtOnceFor1D. Thousands of fans tweeted out pictures of themselves layered in clothing and thanking Payne for saving the fandom. But not before several One Directioners posted photos of ripped-up concert tickets in effigy. Hey, they might smoke herb, but at least they’re not telling teenagers to take off all their clothes, right?

AMC’s latest hopes it will ‘Catch Fire’ Interview. Lee Pace may be ambitious on AMC’s new tech drama, but he wants you to know he’s still a nice guy in real life. If Lee Pace looks familiar, you’re probably a fan of 2007’s beloved but too quickly canceled “Pushing Daisies, or the similarly beloved but also canceled “Wonderfalls. He can next be seen in AMC’s newest drama, “Halt and Catch Fire. The title refers to a computer command that causes all activities to compete so heavily for focus that nothing can move forward and the computer has to be reset. The show is set in the early ’80s during the PC race. IBM had a virtual lock on the market, but that doesn’t

No holding back The show premieres June 1 at 10 p.m., but AMC made the pilot available early on Tumblr. stop Pace’s Joe MacMillan from trying to get in on the fun. He enlists a rebellious but brilliant college student (Mackenzie Davis) and an engineer (Scoot McNairy) struggling to accept the humdrum turn his life has taken. Together, they try to create their own PC while avoiding legal trouble from IBM.

MacMillan, at least in the pilot, is a man of mystery. He first appears on screen driving a fast car and heartlessly running over an armadillo. It’s symbolic of his takeno-prisoners approach to life. But don’t be too hard on Joe. “I love Joe. I believe in him. He’s a very complicated person,â€? Pace says. “At the end of the day, he just wants to make you a great computer.â€? But Pace admits, “Yeah, it’s fun to be bad. Who am I kidding? It’s fun to behave badly.â€? For all the shenanigans Joe gets up to, Pace wants to remind viewers of one thing: “I’m not like that. owsky. Good timing, too, as this is his first film since 1990’s “The Rainbow Thief.”

‘Chinese Puzzle’ The French dramas “L’Auberge Espagnole” and “Russian Dolls” get a threequel, this one following the onetime youths — including Audrey Tautou and Romain Duris — relocating to New York City.

5

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Sadly, this isn’t a comic book riff on the Moody Blues album

“Days of Future Passed,” but the latest entry in the franchise, this one involving time travel and killer robots. Actually, that sounds more fun.

6

‘Blended’ Adam Sandler wanted to go to Africa, so he made a film about it, knowing that his fans will see anything. Drew Barrymore stars, too, which might be a good thing.

7

‘Godzilla’ Serious for the first time since the 1954 original, the

rampaging, fire-breathing lizard gets rebooted, this time squaring off against an overqualified cast that includes Sally Hawkins, Bryan Cranston and Juliette Binoche.

8

‘The Immigrant’ The last time Joaquin Phoenix and director James Gray collaborated (“Two Lovers”), the former did his fake-rapper shtick on the press tour. Reunited, they head back to 1921 New York with Phoenix’s pimp teaming up with Marion Cotillard.

DATING

12

To text or not to text? That is the question. Don’t let texting run your life. It was during a girls’ night out in Manhattan that Lisa Winning first came up with the idea for what would become the popular website HeTexted. com. “I found that my girlfriends were constantly talking about the texts they had gotten and what they meant,” says Winning. I thought, ‘There should be a place we could go to talk about this.’” Along with former magazine writer Carrie Henderson McDermott, Winning created HeTexted, a site devoted to decoding the combination of texts, online dating messages,

online chats and Facebook posts that are a key part of modern courtship today. Winning and Henderson McDermott have just released their first book, “He Texted: The Ultimate Guide to Decoding Guys” that breaks down everything they’ve learned in the process. “Everyone is so connected now, but it is a lot more confusing,” Winning says of dating in the smartphone era. Since the site began two years ago, Winning has read hundreds of reader-submitted texts, Facebook posts and messages. Here are some of the things she says every woman should keep in mind before they reach for their phones.

Set time limits

Tip

Get out into the world “Have as much fun as possible,” says Winning. “Maybe put down your phone when you are actually out with people. There’s nothing like interacting with people face-to-face.”

Winning warns against spending hours glued to Facebook Messenger. “Five to six messages is good, and then you should put down your phone and go out into the world.”

Don’t play games “And don’t stand for anyone

who is playing games with you,” says Winning. “Bluntly, it’s narcissism and ego,” Winning says of why men often text women without any apparent intention of asking them out. “You can just text someone without making an effort.”

Postpone that friend request “Don’t add him on Facebook,” Winning counsels. “Let him add you. It’s better not to have to pretend that you don’t know that he has two brothers, or that you don’t know where he went on vacation,” she says. LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi lakshmi.gandhi@metro.us

Sex is not a multiple choice test with a single right answer. Knowing what turns you on and wanting your partner to be part of that can be a sign that you are in touch (pun intended) with your desire. Besides, who the hell passes up an opportunity to watch someone masturbate? Wait. Scratch that. Lots of people do. Maybe your girlfriend is in that group. In either case, this is my advice.

Find out if she likes watching you drown your goose. You did not mention whether or not you asked your girlfriend if she wants to watch. If you haven’t, start that conversation.

YOU STAY ‘CRAFTY’ NEW ENGLAND It’s well known that we’ve been living through a craft brewing boom for the past few years. But when you think about it, craft beer was actually the default throughout American history. Lauren Clark, a longtime drinks writer from Boston, digs back into our sudsy past in her new book, “Crafty Bastards: Beer in New England from the Mayflower to Modern Day,” out now from Union Park Press. It traces American beer history from the first settlers through the industrial revolution and up to today’s high-profile craft beer moment. Meet the author

Clark will be signing books at an event on June 10 at Stoddard’s (48 Temple Pl.) called “Beer and Broads.” Hosted by Girls Pint Out and Boston Area Beer Enthusiasts Society, it will feature beers brewed by local women brewers. UNION PARK PRESS

Clark, who’s written about spirits for The New York Times and The Boston Globe and founded DrinkBoston.com, says the homemade roots of early beer-brewing are something readers might be surprised to learn about. Most of the brewing was done by women. “Really, until it became industrial, it was a smallscale activity that was done at home or in a tavern,” she says. “Even a lot of taverns were mom and pop operations. For centuries in Britain, women were the primary brewers. And the people who settled North America brought that tradition with them.” Clark traveled throughout New England to more than 100 breweries to tell their stories. The book can also double as a beer lover’s vacation itinerary. One she found most memorable was the Marshall Wharf Brewing Company in Belfast, Maine. “The beer garden is just great, it’s got this sort of retro look and feel to it. They serve great beers, it’s

Food trucks. A mobile favorite settles into permanent digs in Allston. Some people’s idea of dining in Allston is limited to pizza purchased at 2:30 in the morning. Of course, those people are missing out. Azama Grill, Grasshopper and a plethora of other joints provide internationally minded eaters with plenty of options for face stuffage. That said, until now, Allstonians craving a gourmet grilled cheese had to make it themselves or find a Roxy’s Gourmet Grilled Cheese truck. But no longer. After several delays, Roxy’s first storefront has finally appeared at 485 Cambridge St., making it one of a handful of Boston food trucks to go brick and mortar. “We want to take this opportunity to use it as an experimental kitchen,” says founder James DiSabatino. “I kind of think backward. As most restaurants grow and potentially become chains or whatever, it seems inevitable that the food quality decreases. I’m looking at it the other way. I’m looking at our growth as an opportunity to get better, and that’s why Allston is perfect.” The Revere native hopes to open more quick-serve

a great location. Belfast used to be a shipping, industrial, slightly depressed town, but it’s getting artsy and hip.” In Boston, she recommends Deep Ellum and The Publick House as jumping-off points for beer adventures. While it seems like craft beer is everywhere, Clark points out that it still only represents about 10 percent of national beer sales. While she wouldn’t be surprised if things slowed down eventually, it’s still a great time to be a beer lover. “I just think anybody who likes to drink local New England beer should be optimistic. Even during the last slowdown, most of the breweries survived and kept on doing their thing and getting better. Beers are going to be better and better because the consumer is more educated, they know better what a good beer tastes like. The brewing keeps getting better.

restaurants down the line. For now, he figures Allston’s young population could be pretty receptive of offbeat cheese melts. Without the resources to start a typical restaurant in 2011, DiSabatino had to gamble on a food truck — a relatively new business model at the time. Luckily, street food got trendy. “To create a culture that thrives, you have to encourage competition, or encourage peers,” he says. “I think more people became exposed to street food, and that helped our success.” In addition to the five melts

typically available at the two trucks, DiSabatino tells us to expect a few new idiosyncratic lunchy munchies on the shop’s menu. But then again, there may not be a definite answer to the question, “What is, and what is not a grilled cheese?” “I think putting more than three [additional] ingredients in does it,” DiSabatino explains. “We try to keep it to cheese and a maximum of two other ingredients at a time. … There’s the whole ideological philosophy of, ‘Is it a grilled cheese when it has blank, or does it become just a sandwich at that point?’” BARRY THOMPSON

death. Whether it is because they say “no” to a prom or date invitation, violence against women is belittled and seen as a joke. And mental health issues seem to be what is being blamed for this tragedy. People with mental issues live full lives without stabbing or shooting anyone, so while I have no doubt that Elliot Rodger had issues, they aren’t to blame. Plenty of people in the world are lonely and are not having sex, and yet they don’t go on murderous rampages. This person thought he was being denied what he was entitled to, and until you curtail that

Re: ‘Victim’s father blames government “idiots” as town mourns killings’ (Metro, May 27) While I can’t imagine the pain and suffering of the victims’ families and friends, I have to say there is a bigger issue than gun laws. Though there is no doubt that stricter enforced gun laws would have prevented the shootings, the fact remains that at the end of the day, we live in a culture where a woman saying NO is the cause of violence and

thought process, the behavior and lashing out won’t stop. TOVA WEISBLATT, VIA EMAIL

Snoopy in ’ 16 Re: ‘Snoopy for president’ (Metro, May 28) Absolutely wonderful reply by letter writer David Bryce. Snoop’s got my vote! As far as Reba Shimansky’s original letter: After six years of an “historic” amateur in the White House, how’s that “Hope and Change” working out for you?

Re: ‘Elect Clinton for historical significance’ (Metro, May 28) I enjoyed Reba Shimansky’s letter calling to elect Hillary Clinton president for the sake of historical significance. But a flaw in that argument is that one could advocate electing Sarah Palin for the same reason. We need to find more compelling reasons to elect a candidate than her gender. STEVEN EDLIN, VIA EMAIL

Jared and Jerry Remy both got what they deserved. Jared, the scumbag monster who admittedly murdered the mother of his child, will be locked up in state prison until he dies. Jerry Remy, the famed Red Sox color analyst, will continue to be absent from Red Sox broadcasts for the next couple of nights, but his true punishment for enabling Jared for all those years will also be something of a life sentence. Jerry has already been publicly humiliated in several Boston Globe articles, particularly the one in March titled, “For Jared Remy, leniency was the rule until one lethal night, and on various sports radio shows. But the backlash won’t entirely cease. There will forever be those who snicker behind Jerry’s back and there will be forever be cringing and comments from viewers at home when his face pops up on a NESN telecast. There will forever be whispers about how he enabled his son for years and there will be endless chatter about what he could have done differently in raising Jared. Jerry will continue to be treated differently from

co-workers, friends, family and the anonymous than he was before Aug. 15, 2013 — the day of Jennifer Martel’s murder. Now, the original plan was for Remy to continue his duties as Don Orsillo’s sidekick Wednesday night at Fenway Park as the Red Sox faced the Atlanta Braves. Mercifully, the

executives at NESN realized that 30-plus hours after Jared Remy’s guilty plea wasn’t exactly a great time to bring back the “Rem-Dog.â€? He’s now likely to reappear Friday night. Perfect. Ease him back in on a weekend, when the media scrutiny won’t be there. Yes, Jerry Remy’s days under the big microscope are likely over, because fortunately for him, there won’t be a public trial that plays out. And the days of bombshell Remy stories in the media are also likely over. But the whispers at homes from here to Bangor, Maine, will remain. Jerry will forever have a scarlet letter on his broadcast blazer, because he sucks as a dad. You know sports play-byplay legend Marv Albert? He’s still doing games, but he’s still also the “guy who dresses in women’s underwearâ€? for many sports fans ‌ and his “incidentâ€? happened in 1997. There’s a joke or two made at his expense at the beginning of the broadcast, and then the viewers turn their attention right back to the game. That’s sort of, kind of what the future will be like for

Remy. You’ll be at a party. The Red Sox will be on. Remy’s face will pop up, and someone will say, “Hey, look — it’s the father of the year! or “I just can’t believe he’s still doing these games after all that stuff. In the end, Jerry Remy gets to keep the job he loves. That’s the good news for him. The bad news is that he will pay a small fee of brief public hu-

miliation on every Sox game he does. Nope, Jerry Remy didn’t murder anyone. But he deserves to forever be questioned. Going forward he will be questioned for a minute or two every night ‌ then it’ll be “back to the game.â€? Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.
