Feds: Logan airline crew hid drug money from TSA Airport scheme. Four Boston-area men and a Florida man are facing 20 years for the alleged crimes. Four JetBlue crew members and a Delta Air Lines customer service agent smuggled thousands of dollars worth of drug money and used their credentials to slip past security at Logan International Airport, according to federal prosecutors. Rupert Crossley, 25, of Lynn; Alvin Leacock, 27, of Hollywood, Florida; Eric Vick, 24, of

Mattapan; Anthony Trotman, 24, of Boston, all JetBlue Airways ground operations crew members and Dino Dunkley, 31, of Boston, a Delta Air Lines customer service ramp agent, were arrested Thursday during a sting operation. The men appeared in federal court Thursday on charges of money laundering and conspiracy to defraud the United States, namely, the Transportation Security Administration. They will remain in custody until their detention hearing, which has not been scheduled, according to a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney’s office. Federal prosecutors claim

in a sworn affidavit that nine money laundering transactions were completed involving about $417,000 in cash that the defendants believed to be drug proceeds. The employees allegedly snuck the drug money past the TSA using their MassPort security badges, personal iden-

tification codes and biometric fingerprint clearances that swept them through unmanned security doors and in to restricted areas. Cash was transported from areas such as curbside drop-off and pickups or restrooms, to areas such as departure gates. In some cases, cash was smuggled aboard commercial fights from Boston to Florida, according to the affidavit. The suspects were allegedly paid between $1,000 and $2,500 for each smuggling run. Massport released a statement Thursday saying that employees who receive identification allowing for unescorted

access to secure areas at Logan undergo “careful vetting which includes a criminal background check.” U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said, “Security at our nation’s airports is paramount and the conduct alleged today is alarming. Thanks to the hard work and commitment of the federal and state investigators and airline security personnel, a potentially dangerous breach in security was identified.” If convicted, each defendant faces up to 20 years in prison. Boston parks ranks top among US cities Boston earned four out of five “park benches” on The Trust for Public Land’s ParkScore’s national index, ranking third out of 60 cities and tying with Portland and San Francisco. With 97 percent of

residents living within a 10-minute walk of a park, Boston received especially high marks for park access. The city’s high percentage of city area dedicated to parks — 16.9 percent — and strong playground access score also boosted the city’s ranking, though it was hurt by its low median park size of just one acre. Bad taste. Southie man gets prison after biting, swallowing victim’s lip A South Boston man who bit off another man’s lip and swallowed it following a bar fight was sentenced to more than 20 years in jail. Robert O’Connor, 46, who is considered an habitual offender, was sentenced on Wednesday to more than 22 years in jail on a variety of charges including mayhem and assault and battery, according to the Suffolk district attorney’s office. O’Connor was convicted in March for the 2012 fight. Authorities said he entered a South Boston bar and attempted to pick a fight with a man by calling him a racial slur as the two played pool. O’Connor then began pushing a bar employee who had come to stop the fight. Two bar employees and the victim were able to get O’Connor out of the bar when he again called the man a racial slur. The two then agreed to cross the street to fight. During the fight O’Connor grabbed the man’s head, leaned in, bit and ripped off a large portion of the man’s lip, permanently disfiguring him. Authorities said that evidence showed that O’Connor then swallowed it.

Prison sentence While prosecutors sought to have O’Connor serve 35 years in jail, a judge imposed a shorter sentence. •

O’Connor will spend 20 years behind bars for a mayhem charge and concurrent sentences of 10 years for violating the victim’s civil rights and 2 1/2 years for assault and battery.

He will spend another 2 1/2 years in jail for assault and battery on the second victim.

O’Connor was indicted as an habitual offender based on his record, which includes a 2007 conviction for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for an attack on a fellow inmate, another conviction for breaking and entering and larceny and another from 1986 for a gun offense. As an habitual offender, O’Connor was exposed to the mandatory sentence allowed for his recent conviction. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

Bromfield Camera: 50 years of focusing on service in Boston Not many businesses make it to the half century mark. Of the ones that do, not all of those can say they have been in the same place and have had the same ownership for that whole time. The Centamore family brothers, Russ and Steve and sister Marie, owners of Bromfield Camera can lay claim to all of those milestones as they celebrate their 50th anniversary this month. The doors to the store opened in May of 1964, on Bromfield Street, located just steps from Downtown Crossing and Park Street. Back then as it remains today, they were the largest retailer of new and used photographic equipment in the city of Boston. Originally Ross Centamore the father of the three remaining family members started the business with his children in tow. Today, Russ and Steve are the co-managers and work as part of the sales team and Marie is their secretary.

Bromfield camera opened its doors in 1908 but it was originally owned by a different family. The Centamores took over the business in May of 1964 and has been growing with the photo industry ever since. Many businesses’s claim customer service as their forte but do not follow through, the Centamore children have always followed their father’s belief that the customer is always right. “Keep the customer happy and they will continue to come back my dad always said,” muses Russ. “We now have third generation customers”.

Even with the shift to the net nothing has really changed in their approach. “We believe an educated customer is the best customer. We take the customer’s camera choices and trim the information down for them based on the questions and answers we receive” Russ says. “By listening to the customer, we fit the camera for their customer’s needs on the first visit and find returns or exchanges minimal” he added.

Bromfield Camera services include in house repairs, photo printing, photo restorations and individual one on one instructions in both When reflecting choosing the right back on the first 50 years product and the use of Centamore’s philosophy the product purchased. is one that seems to easy 50 years ago the to believe but as he puts competition for business it. “Our business plan was mostly people buying things out of is real simple. Calif. gunman’s parents describe ‘hell on earth’ Grief. “They are mourning the victims more than they are mourning their son,” said a friend of the Rodger family. The parents of Elliot Rodger, the gunman who killed six college students in a rampage in Southern California, are suffering “hell on earth” knowing their son caused such a tragedy, they said in a statement on Thursday. Rodger’s family members are mourning the victims of Friday’s mass shooting more than they are mourning their son, said family friend and spokesman Simon Astaire reading the statement on NBC’s “Today” show. “We are crying in pain for the victims and their families. It breaks our hearts on a level that we didn’t think possible,” said the statement he read by Chin Rodger and Peter Rodger, who is a Hollywood film director. “The feeling of knowing that it was our son’s actions that caused the tragedy can only be described as hell on earth,” they said in the statement. Astaire added that the couple, who are divorced, have “diminished” since their son’s killing spree. “They have gone down in

Chin Rodger received a telephone call from her son’s therapist about the manifesto on Friday night, and the two parents raced separately to Isla Vista, Astaire has said. Celebrities voicing animated characters is a mostly modern phenomenon, meaning the name of the woman who played the villain in 1959’s “Sleeping Beauty” — Eleanor Audley — probably doesn’t sound familiar. Angelina Jolie gets to kick back and play bad in “Maleficent.” FILMMAGIC

For Angelina Jolie, taking on the title role in “Maleficent,” which tells the story of “Sleeping Beauty” from the villain’s perspective, might have seemed like a no-brainer. But Jolie herself had her doubts. “I was a bit nervous to take her on. I don’t have a big theater voice. I don’t do things that are kind of comedic. This is such a crazy idea. I’m a fairy? ‘How was your day, honey?’ ‘I was a fairy,’” Jolie remembers telling her partner, Brad Pitt. “I was so challenged by it. For me as an actress to do something where I’m not taking myself so seriously or doing it for myself or doing it for art — just to remember what it is to play and entertain and try something bold.” But once she had the horns

Kids these days Jolie let her toddler daughter Vivienne appear in the film — a necessity since other children were too terrified of her in full makeup and costume. “Actually, one child completely froze and then cried,” Jolie admits. But she’s hoping Vivienne’s appearance does not set a precedent. “If when they get older and they decide to be actors — I would just ask that that’s not the center of their lives.”

and the augmented cheekbones and nose in place, she just went with it. “If you’re going to do it, you can’t just kind of do it. You have to go fully into it and enjoy it,” she says. “I practiced a lot with my children. When I got them laughing, I figured I was onto something — well, they laughed, they cried.” Speaking of making kids laugh and cry, Jolie isn’t concerned that some parents might find the darker elements of “Maleficent” tough for kids to take. “I think what children can handle and what they’re interested in is much deeper than what people assume,” she says. “With a film like this, people ask, ‘Is it too dark for children?’ It’s not. They want to understand things that frighten them. They want to see dark things that happen and how to rise above them. They don’t want to be hidden from all things, everything sweetened.” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

Spoof. Seth MacFarlane’s latest is good, but has he ever seen a Western? Making a Western — or even just spoofing one — in this day and age is insane. The genre is dead, gunned down by “The Lone Ranger.” Technically speaking, Seth MacFarlane’s “A Million Ways to Die in the West” is pure hubris, the result of cashing in “Ted” bucks to Review ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’ Director: Seth MacFarlane Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Charlize Theron

make something so counterchic that it has a certain dignity. That his latest also forces him to work without a few of his safety nets helps, too. For one thing, he portrays, not merely voices, Albert, an anachronistic smart-ass sheep farmer. The loosely plotted story has hottie gunslinger (Charlize Theron, playing it straight) helping Albert train for a gunfight with the dandy (Neil Patrick Harris) who absconded with his beloved (Amanda Seyfried). But it’s really a series of sketches and gags about the Old West, not Western movies, per se. In fact, it’s not clear if MacFarlane has ever even seen a Western. The only Western

he seems to have seen is “Back to the Future Part III,” the only film that gets a direct homage at all. For someone who loves — relies on, really — making endless references to things he watched as a kid, it’s strange to see MacFarlane avoiding homages so studiously. Then again, this frees him up to indulge in what is his actual gift: unfettered loopiness. He approaches the Western not as a cinephile,

Being attacked is the Pitts The red carpet’s least favorite Ukrainian strikes again. Just two weeks after sticking his head under America Ferrera’s dress in Cannes, celebrity reporter Vitalii Sediuk crashed the “Maleficent red carpet at El Capitan theater in Hollywood and allegedly attacked Brad Pitt while he was signing autographs. Was Pitt punched? Was he smacked? Several reports

differ; some are even saying that eyewitnesses saw Pitt hit the attacker back. Either way, we’re hearing Pitt wasn’t too fazed. He just replaced his infamous dark sunglasses and kept signing autographs for fans alongside his partner, Angelina Jolie. Sediuk was picked up by LAPD and charged with battery. Guess his efforts to revive “Fight Club aren’t going to happen!

Breaking boundaries Even in 2014, there are still social barriers to be broken. For the first time in its history, TIME magazine is featuring a transgender person on its cover. Laverne Cox, one of the stars of the popular Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black, graces the cover on the edition that is on newsstands now. The cover story with Cox, called “The Transgender Tipping Point, has the transgender actress talking about respect and violence numbers among transgender people. Cox tweeted on Thursday that the cover story was a “lovely bday present.

Whether you grew up with “Reading Rainbow or you just know Jimmy Fallon’s Doors-inspired riff on the theme song, you’ll be psyched to learn that LeVar Burton, original host of the popular PBS children’s book series, is bringing it back. In under a day, a Kickstarter campaign raised more than $2 million to create both a Web series and school reading program. Burton

celebrated by doing a Reddit AMA, where most of the comments were heartfelt thanks.

Gemini | May 22-June 20. Someone will make you feel overly sensitive today. Don’t waste time feeling sorry for yourself, when you should be looking for something to do that enriches your life. Cancer | June 21-July 22. Don’t fall prey to a fast-talking stranger. Keep your eye on your money and refuse any offers that seem too good to be true. Caution is the name of the game. Leo | July 23-Aug. 22. Offer your time to a cause that you feel passionate about. You can make life easier for others with a little effort. Your own problems will seem small. Virgo | Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Delegate your responsibilities. If you don’t put in an honest effort, you will not honor a commitment. This will cause problems with an authority figure that will compromise your position. Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22. A romantic encounter is in the stars. Don’t question what’s being offered, just plan to enjoy the moment and see where it leads. Social functions will offer an interesting alternative. Scorpio|Oct. 23-Nov. 21. Stick to your own affairs today. You will have to refrain from commenting on the way others do things. A friendship may be jeopardized.

Sagittarius | Nov. 22Dec. 21. Someone close to you will show interest in your personal life. This can lead to an offer of help that will allow you greater freedom. Capricorn | Dec. 22-Jan. 20. Don’t take part in gossip. Protect your reputation regardless of what others do. Stay out of the spotlight and work diligently to live up to your responsibilities. Actions speak louder than words. Aquarius | Jan. 21-Feb. 18. You are probably in need of a little pampering. A relaxing day at the spa or an energetic session at the gym will prepare you for a romantic evening.

Gun, mental issues related Re: ‘Not a gun law issue’ (Metro, May 29) Could you cite a real-world example of violence against women being “belittled”? If any violence is “seen as a joke,” it’s violence against men, who make up the majority of victims except those of rape. Yes, many people with mental health issues don’t murder, but why does that preclude mental illness causing Elliot Rodger’s rampage? He refused to take schizophrenia drugs recommended by his therapist.

Taurus | April 21-May 21. Your schedule appears to be hectic, which will lead to costly errors if you don’t slow down and think matters through carefully. Ask for help.

Don’t be a rogue rider

Re: ‘Be careful what you wish for’ (Metro, May 29) Interesting that Joe Alloy paraphrases Sarah Palin with the question “how’s that Hope and Change thing working out for you”? I’ll take that amateur over the previous “experts” who got us involved in two wars that killed more than 5,000 Americans

I never ride against traffic; you can’t see the reverse traffic signs and lights if you’re behind them. It’s extremely dangerous when you have cars and other cyclists coming toward you. You are putting other cyclists in danger. You won’t be able to ride fast and react in time if you’re pinned

between oncoming traffic and parked cars. Some people like to be rogue amateur riders, but you’’ll soon lose some organs and limbs or end up dead. It’s like having projectiles coming toward you. There are plenty of professional cycling websites that forbid riding against traffic. Do your research, don’t listen to a rogue cyclist. BRUCE WILLIAMS, VIA EMAIL

Sudoku: Easy and hard

Pisces | Feb. 19-March 20. You will feel better about yourself if you get rid of a bad habit. Self-improvement will help you shed negativity, making way for a confident mind-set. Aries | March 21-April 20. Love and laughter will surround you. Now is a good time to spice up your romantic life. Socializing or an intimate tete-a-tete will enhance your existence.

Sox-Rays ready to tussle again it carried through the week as Boston put together its first winning streak of three games or more. The Rays are 5-1 against the Sox this season and it’s clear to see that Tampa Bay still holds a grudge against Boston. The old bad blood between the two clubs spilled onto the turf last Sunday as Yunel Escobar, Sean Rodriguez and Jonny Gomes were ejected after a scrum. David Price (4-4, 4.42 ERA) will face Boston’s Brandon Workman (0-0, 3.18 ERA) Friday night, Jake Odorizzi (2-4, 4.56 ERA) will take on Allen Webster (1-2, 8.60 ERA) Saturday and the Rays will send Erik Bedard (2-3, 4.10 ERA) to the mound in the series finale Sunday to tackle Jon Lester (5-6, 3.45 ERA).

MLB. The Red Sox have shown improvement recently and are looking for revenge against Tampa Bay. This weekend’s series at Fenway Park doesn’t look too enticing on paper, as the Red Sox and Rays both sit below the .500 mark and are cuddled up in the basement of a mediocre AL East. But few believe the two 2014 sleeping giants will stay heavy-eyed this season. Monday’s losing streakbreaking victory by the Sox over the Braves in Atlanta had every hallmark of a turningpoint win. There was a spirited rally and a bullpen that cleaned up an early mess in the monumental Memorial Day win and

Koji Uehara and the Red Sox have dropped five of six to the Rays so far this season. / GETTY IMAGES

ADAM LEVITAN, LIVING THE FANTASY METRO’S FANTASY GURU BREAKS IT ALL DOWN.

WHAT TO KNOW WHEN PLAYING DAILY LEAGUES When word broke last week that Prince Fielder would undergo neck surgery, owners in yearly fantasy leagues kicked their dogs and cried themselves to sleep. Daily leaguers shrugged and went about their business. The emerging scene known as daily fantasy continues to attract more and more players because of situations like this. The epic nature of traditional season-long leagues is rewarding at the end of the rainbow, but can crush souls along the way. Meanwhile, daily salarycap leagues that pay out after one day of action let players get a fresh start every day. We give you tips to get the money.

Spend on starters MLB pickups

Scoop these guys up on the waiver wire while you can: •

Oscar Taveras, OF, Cardinals — St. Louis’ top prospect will make an instant impact as soon as he’s called up.

Phil Hughes, SP, Twins — Hughes joins a long list of pitchers whose home run rate sharply declines once out of the AL East.

Mike Trout and Miguel Cabrera have the potential to go 0-for-4 any given day no matter the matchup. That’s not the case with pitchers, who are far more consistent on a start-tostart basis. So when deciding what positions to extract value from, getting cheap at the starting pitcher spot is a mistake.

Small sample size When selecting your nightly lineup of batters, there is a plethora of statistics to digest. The simplest stat many

NFL news

Ray Rice avoided trial on assault charges following an ugly incident with his fiancee. But that doesn’t mean the first-time offender will avoid the long arm of the commissioner’s office. Rice tarnished the NFL in a public way, meaning a one- to three-game suspension is expected.

people put a ton of weight in is historical batter vs. pitcher numbers. Don’t do it. These numbers often contain a small sample size, much of which is irrelevant to that night’s game. Justin Morneau is 6-of-36 with no homers against Zack Greinke in his career. But how many of those were in Coors Field, or when Greinke was pitching at a Cy Young level? Batter splits have a much bigger sample size.

The little things Everyone knows to start batters at Coors Field and pitchers at Petco Park. That’s not going to yield a ton of profit. Other ballpark tendencies, such as the right-field porches in Boston and San Francisco, provide sneakier value. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

Hernandez voted seventh-most hated man in US Former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was voted the seventh most hated man in America, according to E-Poll Market Research and ESPN. A whopping 81 percent of people polled said they disliked Hernandez, who is accused of multiple homicides. Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has the dubious distinction of being the most hated man in America, according to the poll. Pop star Justin Bieber was tied for fifth in the poll.
