De Blasio kids crowned Mermaid Parade royalty Royals. Dante and Chiara de Blasio will headline the annual Coney Island seaside ritual that takes place in June. The first kids are also royalty — at least for a day. Mayor Bill de Blasio’s children, Dante and Chiara, were crowned King Neptune and Queen Mermaid of the 32nd Annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade on June 21. Surrounded by scantily clad revelers, the mayoral teens will be wheeled through the parade’s route on an antique wicker Boardwalk Rolling Chair that dates back to 1923. “We are extraordinarily honored to have the participation of New York City’s first family in the parade,” Coney Island USA founder Dick Zigun said in a statement.

“King Neptune and Queen Mermaid represent the young adults of New York City who are the next generation of visitors to Coney Island and Coney Island USA.” Zigun

“King Neptune and Queen Mermaid represent the young adults of New York City who are the next generation of visitors to Coney Island and Coney Island USA,” added Zigun, also known as the Mayor of Coney Island. The seaside ritual is a celebration of ancient mythology and the largest art parade in the nation. Marching bands, drill teams, floats and antique cars will partake in the festivities, along with some 1,500 participants dressed as mermaids, amusement rides and Neptunes. Founded in 1983, the Mermaid Parade pays tribute to Coney Island’s Mardi Gras, which ran from 1903 to 1954. The parade was also established to give artistic New Yorkers an outlet for selfexpression. Fresh. Gowanus to be flushed with millions of gallons of water It’s taken four years for the city to reactivate a tunnel to flush millions of gallons of fresh water into the toxic Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. Even so, locals are relieved the city will address the polluted waterway. “I can’t stress how eager we are to see this project be complete,” said Craig Hammerman, district manager for the local community board. The flushing tunnel was shut down for repairs in 2010, not long after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency named the Gowanus Canal a

Twice a year, a peculiar phenomenon lights up Manhattan’s streets. “Manhattanhenge,” also known as the Manhattan Solstice, occurs when the setting sun aligns with the east-west streets on the borough’s main grid. The nickname, popularized by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, is derived from the vertical rock monument Stonehenge. The sun rises to perfectly align with several of the stones on the solstices, signaling the changing season. Manhattanhenge occurred Thursday night around 8:16 p.m. But, for

Safe. Council aims to stop traffic fatalities The New York City Council passed a slate of 11 laws and six resolutions on Thursday in an effort to reduce and eliminate all traffic fatalities. At least four of those bills are targeted toward the city’s 13,437 yellow and 6,000 outer-borough taxis — including one named after Cooper Stock, a 9-year-old boy who was killed by a cab as he and his father crossed the intersection of West 97th Street and West End Avenue on Jan. 10. The Council overwhelmingly passed the entire package, sending it to Mayor Bill de Blasio for signatures within the next month. “From curbing speeding to holding dangerous drivers accountable, these bills are a major step forward for our Vision Zero initiative,” the mayor said. Cooper’s mother, Dana Lerner, hopes the bills do just that. Still, she called

California shooting. Gunman’s parents describe ‘hell on Earth’ The parents of Elliot Rodger, the gunman who killed six college students in a rampage in Southern California, are suffering “hell on Earth” knowing their son caused such a tragedy, they said in a statement on Thursday. Rodger’s family members are mourning the victims of Friday’s mass shooting more than they are mourning their son, said family friend and spokesman Simon Astaire reading the statement on NBC’s “Today” show. “We are crying in pain for the victims and their families. It breaks our hearts on a level that we didn’t think possible,” said the statement he read by Chin Rodger and Peter Rodger, who is a Hollywood film director. “The feeling of knowing that it was our son’s actions that caused the tragedy can only be described as hell on Earth,” they said in the statement. So Many Activities… Such Great Value M

y friends and I have spent a lot of our time in search of the perfect weekend getaway. Over the years, we’ve taken trips to the Hamptons and Fire Island, camping weekends upstate, and a bike trip in Vermont. While each trip had its particular charms, each was somehow lacking that “perfect” vacation feel. We found the vacation we were seeking in an unlikely place… summer camp. Club Getaway, a “Camp for Grownups” on 300 acres in the Berkshire Mountains of Kent, Connecticut, provides everything we’d been looking

for — plenty of cute single campers, summer activities galore and even a little romance for couples. There is an abundance of instructed activities — trapeze, waterskiing, tennis, mountain and road biking, golf and rock climbing, to name a few. I decide to try the trapeze for the first time. The cute, muscular instructor straps me into my harness, and before I know it, I am flying through the fresh mountain air. Sports are not the only choices available to us. We take dance lessons, cooking classes with the Connecticut Culinary Institute, yoga, and our new favorite activity — wine tasting.

“Hiking, biking, kayaking, ziplining, waterskiing, trapeze, rock climbing, tennis, golf, wine tasting… all in one weekend!”

Club Getaway Calendar

Each night is packed with party options. There are delicious dinners, live bands, dancing, even a roaring bonfire.

Club Getaway, a weekend sports and adventure resort, is located in the Berkshire Mountains of Kent, CT, just 90 minutes from NYC by car or Getaway Bus. We managed to try kayaking, hiking, skiing, and tennis. All of our high energy activities have balanced out our unabashed consumption of cocktails, delicious food and roasted marshmallows. We leave Club Getaway, satisfied that we have finally achieved our ideal mix of partying, healthy activities, nature, romance and fun, all rolled into one. The perfect weekend vacation.

A TALK WITH MY DOG When my dog and my wife have a disagreement, I know two things: I had better not take a side, and it’s going to be hilarious. Nola (the dog) is a 10-yearold Sheltie who pretty much knows the rules about carpets, begging and ordering too many movies on Pay Per View. Linda (the wife) is, well, older than the dog, and she knows which rules we really mean and which ones can slide. But occasionally, a circumstance arises which requires discussion. This week, it was a rabbit in the back yard. Linda and Nola stood at the door looking out. Nola: Hey, there’s a rabbit. Let me at him! Linda: No. You can chase squirrels. But we don’t chase rabbits. Nola: Why not? Linda: We like rabbits. Nola: What about chipmunks? Linda: You can chase those, too. Nola: So we don’t like chipmunks?

Opinion

TOM FOREMAN FOREMAN IS A POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT FOR CNN.

Linda: We like them ďŹ ne. They’re just so fast you’ll never catch one. Nola: How about the neighbor’s cats? Linda: Fair game.

I understand the dog’s confusion, especially after this past week here in D.C. This is a city where people constantly make a great fuss about ethics, right up until their principles collide with their politics. In principle everyone wants to chase down better schools; less crime; good

jobs; affordable housing; and freedom of speech, religion and the press. Those are the squirrels. Yet political alliances can run counter to all those good intentions: Donors, activists, backroom deals and nod-anda-wink promises of future employment can turn any issue into an untouchable rabbit. In short, every time some voters see gun violence, sexual assaults and bad treatment of veterans and want lawmakers to pursue those issues, other voters say “Not so fast. You might hurt my friends. “It’s very confusing, I said to the dog the other night. “How will this town ever sort this out and simply do the good work that needs doing? “Well, she said, “I scratch my head with my back foot. “What? That doesn’t make any sense, I replied. She raised her newspaper and went back to reading. “Exactly. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

At a news briefing, Boehner said he was still not convinced that Shinseki’s ouster would solve the VA’s problems. Instead, he sought to keep the pressure on President Barack Obama for VA scheduling abuses that covered up monthslong delays for veterans’ medical care appointments. REUTERS

OMG! Sippable sunscreen could be answer to evening out The days of having sun cream sloppily smeared onto your skin could be over with the arrival of the first drinkable sun protection. Osmosis Skincare claims its product, called Harmonized H20 UV — available in “tanning” and “nontanning” varieties that retail for $30 a bottle — provides defense comparable to SPF 30. Users are told to ingest a small dose of the water one hour prior to sun exposure, with the process repeated every four hours. Dr. Ben Johnson professes that the formula’s liquid molecules vibrate on the skin to cancel out 97 percent of UVA and UVB rays. Johnson tells Metro why his elixir has a bright future. This product has received a lot of criticism by skincare experts. Why do you think they’re wrong? There are a lot of naysayers. The common misconception is that people think we’re using radio waves. We’re not because radio waves go right through water. What we’re actually doing is colliding radio waves in the presence of water and that creates what’s called a scalar wave (purported to be a form of electromag-

netic wave). Have you tried the product yourself? Yes. About three years ago I started testing it and suffered a few sunburns in the process. After tweaking the formula, we tested about 50 people to see if it was consistently working, and basically it was. Is this for people who hate sunscreen? Right. [Sunscreen] is actually quite irritating. And the reason that I was looking for an alternative is because the waterproof chemical sunscreens on the market today are the ones that are bad for you. Porn may mess with your head Men who report watching a lot of pornography tend to have less volume and activity in regions of the brain linked to rewards and motivation, says a new German study. The results, published in JAMA Psychiatry, provide the first evidence for a link between porn consumption

and reductions in brain size and activity in response to sexual stimuli, said Simone Kühn, the study’s lead author from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, in an email. For the study, she recruited 64 healthy men between the ages of 21 and 45 years and asked them questions about their porn-watching habits. They also took images of their

Creeping beauty Kicking back. Angelina Jolie enjoyed taking life less seriously for the fantasy “Maleficent.”

Voice work

The other Maleficent Celebrities voicing animated characters is a mostly modern phenomenon, meaning the name of the woman who played the villain in 1959’s “Sleeping Beauty” — Eleanor Audley — probably doesn’t sound familiar. But her voice might. She also did the vocal work for the evil stepmother in Disney’s “Cinderella.”

For Angelina Jolie, taking on the title role in “Maleficent,” which tells the story of “Sleeping Beauty” from the villain’s perspective, might have seemed like a no-brainer. But Jolie herself had her doubts. “I was a bit nervous to take her on. This is such a crazy idea. I’m a fairy? ‘How was your day, honey?’ ‘I was a fairy,’” Jolie remembers telling her partner, Brad Pitt. “I was so challenged by it. For me as an actress to do something where I’m not taking myself so seriously or doing it for myself or doing it for art — just to remember what it is to play and entertain and try something bold.”

Kids these days Jolie let her toddler daughter Vivienne appear in the film — a necessity since other children were too terrified of her in full makeup and costume. “Actually, one child completely froze and then cried. I felt so bad,” Jolie admits. But she’s hoping Vivienne’s appearance does not set a precedent for her kids becoming actors. “If when they get older and they decide to be actors — I would just ask that that’s not the center of their lives.”

But once she had the horns and the augmented cheekbones and nose in place, she just went with it. “If you’re going to do it, you can’t just kind of do it. You have to go fully into it and enjoy it,” she says. “I practiced a lot with my children. When I got them laughing, I figured I was onto something — well, they laughed, they cried.” Speaking of making kids laugh and cry, Jolie isn’t concerned that some parents might find the darker elements of “Maleficent” tough for kids to take. “With a film like this, people ask, ‘Is it too dark for children?’ It’s not,” she says. “They want to understand things that frighten them. They want to see dark things that happen and how to rise above them. They don’t want to be hidden from all things, everything sweetened.” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

Seth MacFarlane gets a bird in the face in “A Million Ways to Die in the West. / LOREY SEBASTIAN

It’s no ‘Blazing Saddles’ Making a Western — or even just spoofing one — in this day and age is a little insane. The genre is dead, gunned down by “The Lone Ranger. Technically speaking, Seth MacFarlane’s “A Million Ways to Die in the West is pure hubris, the result of him cashing in his “Ted bucks to make something so against what’s currently chic that it has a certain dignity. That his latest also forces him to work without a few of his safety nets helps,

too. For one thing, he portrays, not merely voices, Albert, an anachronistic smart-ass sheep farmer. He likes to relentlessly complain about the silliness of gunfights, bar fights and living in the Old West, where one can be randomly picked off by all manner of gruesome deaths. The loosely plotted story has hottie gunslinger (Charlize Theron) helping Albert train for a gunfight with the dandy (Neil Patrick Harris) who ab-

sconded with his beloved (Amanda Seyfried). But it’s really a series of sketches and gags about the Old West but not Western movies, per se. In fact, it’s not clear if MacFarlane has ever even seen a Western. He seems to have absorbed the genre by osmosis, allowing him to riff on the basics: dirty bars, dirty prostitutes, dapper gentlemen with outsized moustaches and dangerous/oppressed Native Americans. In fact, the only Western he seems to have seen is “Back to the Future Part III, the only film that gets a direct homage at all. For someone who loves — annoyingly relies on, really — making endless references to things he watched as a kid, it’s strange to see MacFarlane avoiding homages so studiously. Then again, this frees him up to indulge in what is his actual gift: unfettered loopiness. He approaches the Western not as a cinephile, but merely as someone who sat down and really thought about jokes to make about living in a not quite settled and relatively uncivilized locale. This is funnier than

••••• a Western spoof, or at least more creative. But in truth, it’s neither as silly or as ballsy as “Blazing Saddles,â€? and even, for a few stretches, feels like an actual Western rather than a pastiche. (No one seems to have told Theron or Liam Neeson, as a fearsome outlaw, that this was a comedy.) As an actor, MacFarlane’s not bad — a winning schlub with decent screen presence. In fact, like the Neeson business, he seems to have taken the zeroto-hero role a bit too seriously. It’s not entirely clear why MacFarlane made “A Million Ways to Die in the West,â€? other than to give him a chance to make out with hot actresses.

Drawn. Vonnegut’s daughter put his artistic works in a new book

Erectile Dysfunction (E.D.) When the “Magic Pill” isn’t so magic What do men do when Erectile Dysfunction pills aren’t effective? Don’t like the idea of expensive penile injections, suppositories, and vacuum pumps? Get the facts on an inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP): a permanent solution—covered by many insurance plans—which allows an erection as often as you like, for as long as you wish. Attend a FREE seminar sponsored by Coloplast Corp. to educate men and their partners about an advanced, DRUG FREE treatment for E.D.

Kurt Vonnegut is known for his satirical novels. But he was an equally talented artist who first published his graphic art in his novels “Slaughterhouse-Five” and “Breakfast of Champions.” Now, his drawings are bound in the book “Kurt Vonnegut: Drawings,” which features an introduction by his daughter, Nanette Vonnegut. At a special exhibition and book signing May 14 at the Margo Feiden Gallery, Nanette told us more about her father’s work:

had a lot of fun with that one.

The novelist’s drawings are now available in book form in “Kurt Vonnegut: Drawing.” PROVIDED

What is your favorite drawing by your father, and why? My favorite is the selfportrait [pictured]. It is one continuous line that includes so much: a window with a blue flower in it, buttons on his shirt and his signature. I love it because it looks exactly like him and because it is beautifully integrated as a piece of art. I can tell he

Why do you think your father’s legacy holds strong today? My father has such holding power on so many because he speaks timeless truths about who we are as human beings — our failings as well as our potential for good. While doing all that, he manages to make us laugh out loud in recognition. ... That is his enduring genius. Does your father influence your writing and art? I am always surprised to see his voice show up in my writing and in my art. So much of him is in my bones, whether I like it or not. I think in trying to find my own voice, I have finally allowed his to be there as a low hum, weaving its way in and out of whatever I do. I have to tell stories even in making pictures. GOSSIP

Being attacked is the Pitts The red carpet’s least favorite Ukrainian strikes again. Just two weeks after sticking his head under America Ferrera’s dress in Cannes, celebrity reporter Vitalii Sediuk crashed the “Maleficent” red carpet at El Capitan theater in Hollywood and allegedly attacked Brad Pitt while he

was signing autographs. Was Pitt punched? Was he smacked? Several reports differ; some are even saying that eyewitnesses saw Pitt hit the attacker back. Either way, we’re hearing Pitt wasn’t too fazed. He just replaced his infamous dark sunglasses and kept signing autographs for fans alongside partner Angelina Jolie. Sediuk was picked up by LAPD and charged with battery. Guess his efforts to revive “Fight Club” aren’t going to happen!

million to create both a Web series and school reading program. Burton celebrated by doing a Reddit AMA, where most of the comments were heartfelt thanks.

Breaking boundaries

Even in 2014, there are still social barriers to be broken. For the first time in its history, TIME Magazine is featuring a transgender person on its cover. Laverne Cox, one of the stars of the popular Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black,” graces the cover on the edition that is on newsstands now. The cover story with Cox, called “The Transgender Tipping Point,” has the transgender actress talking about respect and violence numbers among transgender people. Cox tweeted on Thursday that the cover story was a “lovely bday present.”

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

Don’t be a rogue rider

Gun, mental issues related

I never ride against traffic; you can’t see the reverse traffic signs and lights if you’re behind them. It’s extremely dangerous when you have cars and other cyclists coming toward you. You are putting other cyclists in danger. You won’t be able to ride fast and react in time if you’re pinned between oncoming traffic and parked cars. Some people like to be rogue amateur riders, but you’’ll soon lose some organs and limbs or end up dead. It’s like having projectiles coming toward you. There are plenty of professional cycling websites that forbid riding against traffic. Do your research, don’t listen to a rogue cyclist.

Re: ‘Not a gun law issue’ (Metro, May 29) Could you cite a real-world example of violence against women being “belittled”? If any violence is “seen as a joke,” it’s violence against men, who make up the majority of victims except those of rape. Yes, many people with mental health issues don’t murder, but why does that preclude mental illness causing Elliot Rodger’s rampage? He refused to take recommended schizophrenia drugs. That should have prevented him from buying guns. BEN CAMPBELL, VIA EMAIL

Rangers advance to Cup with home win What went right ...

NHL playoffs. New York will compete for its first Stanley Cup in two decades after winning Game 6 over Montreal.

DOMINIC MOORE

Henrik Lundqvist jumped once, then twice, as a wave of blue-clad teammates skated toward their goaltender, ready to embrace him. Simply, it was the biggest moment so far in a lifetime of hard work. Lundqvist made 18 saves to record his franchise record-tying ninth playoff shutout in the Rangers’ 1-0 win over the Canadiens in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals Thursday night at the Garden. The Rangers won the best-of-seven series, 4-2. The Rangers will meet the winner of the Chicago-Los Angeles Western Conference finals starting Wednesday night. Los Angeles leads the best-of-seven series, 3-2, with Game 6 on Friday night in Los Angeles. The Rangers won both regular season meetings with the Blackhawks, and split two games against the Kings. Game 6 was the most important hockey game contested in New York City since June 14, 1994, the date of Game 7 of the

All ‘four’ one The Rangers will tell you the biggest difference between John Tortorella and Alain Vigneualt is the latter’s willingness to roll four lines. In Game 6, it was the fourth line of Brian Boyle, Dominic Moore and Derek Dorsett that opened the game with a strong forechecking shift which led to two shots on goal.

Canucks-Rangers Stanley Cup Final. The Rangers won that game, 3-2, to

win the franchise’s first Cup since 1940, and their fourth overall. And the Rangers played like it meant everything. It was Lundqvist and Canadiens goaltender Dustin Tokarski’s game. The two traded highlightreel saves much of the night. But just 1:50 before the second period ended, the Rangers fourth line broke the deadlock as

Brian Boyle found Dominic Moore in the slot for a one-timer that Tokarski couldn’t stop. The Rangers didn’t go into a shell, however, piling on chances throughout the third period. New York finished with 32 shots on goal to Montreal’s 18. DENIS GORMAN @DenisGorman sports@metro.us

The King is back Following the morning skate, Derick Brassard predicted Henrik Lundqvist would be the best player on the ice. While the franchise cornerstone wasn’t tested often, his cartwheeling save on Thomas Vanek with 4:39 left in the second kept the game deadlocked at 0-0.

But there he was throwing passes and handing off as if nothing ever happened. “[The doctors] said it was a six-week [recovery], but they didn’t really tell me if it was six weeks until I could start doing things or six weeks until I’m full speed,” Manning said. “But when they said six weeks, I kind of had it in my head

If your bid was less than $2 billion, you aren’t going to be the proud owner of a shiny NBA franchise. The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday that former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has bid $2 billion to purchase the Clippers. ESPN reports music executive David Geffen’s bid was second-most at $1.6 billion. Ballmer, 58, is reportedly worth $20 billion. The Sterling family still has to agree to the sale.

Good start The Rangers talked about putting forth a better effort than Tuesday. In the first period of Game 6, they did everything but put the puck behind Dustin Tokarski. The Rangers outshot the Canadiens, 11-5, and outattempted their Original Six rival 22-12.

Eli Manning already looking better seven weeks after surgery The Giants began their second phase of organized team activities this week and despite all the new faces they’ve added this offseason, the sight of a familiar one was the biggest story of the day.
