Feds probe fatal plane crash Fireball. The NTSB is trying to determine what caused the private jet to explode after takeoff Saturday. The National Transportation Safety Board is looking into what caused a plane to crash and burst into flames while attempting to take off from a small airfield in Bedford on Saturday night, killing all seven people onboard. Investigators said the private Gulfstream IV crashed around 9:40 p.m., and according to a witness account, never became airborne. Luke Schiada, an NTSB senior air safety investigator, said at a press conference Sunday afternoon that he did not want to speculate on what caused the fatal crash. “At this point we’re just trying to gather as much factual information as we can,” Schiada said. Investigators said the plane went off the paved runway, rolled down an embank-

ment and settled in a gully about 2,000 feet away. The Philadelphia Inquirer confirmed that its coowner, Lewis Katz, 72, was among those killed. Media accounts identified the three other passengers as Anne B. Leeds, Marcella M. Dalsey and Susan K. Asbell, all friends of Katz’s from South New Jersey. The names of the three crew members were not released as of press time. Schiada said that the bodies were being extracted from the wreckage Sunday afternoon. Investigators will send a report to the safety board in Washington, D.C., which will ultimately determine what likely caused the crash, Schiada said. “The sole purpose is to develop the facts, conditions and circumstances and make recommendations to prevent future accidents,” he said.

All aboard — four passengers, two pilots and one flight attendant — were killed.

There was no unusual air traffic control communication before the crash.

The group was en route to Atlantic City in New Jersey.

When asked about the aircraft’s safety history, Chiada said investigators “don’t know of any previous incidents.”

Some reported the smell of burning fuel as far away as Braintree.

Accused. Cabbie charged in Boston Marathon bombing investigation A local taxi driver is the fourth man to face criminal charges for allegedly interfering with the investigation into the deadly 2013 Boston Marathon terror attack. Khairullozhon Matanov, 23, of Quincy appeared in federal court on Friday on one criminal count of destroying records and three counts of lying to investigators in a terrorism investigation. U.S. Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler ordered Matanov held until Wednesday, when a hearing is scheduled to determine if he may be released on bail. Matanov, a friend of bombing suspects Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, allegedly bought dinner for the brothers and spoke with them in the days after the blast, but, when questioned by police, downplayed their relationship. Prosecutors also accused him of erasing computer searches on the attack and disposing of cell phones he used to contact the brothers. Matanov was not accused of playing a role in the April 15, 2013, bombing, which killed three people and injured 264. The cabbie came to the United States in 2010 on a

Hayden asked why authorities had waited so long to arrest Matanov. “He’s very frightened,” Hayden said Friday. “They’ve been investigating him over a year. Neo-Nazi

Remy’s prison tat may be tied to supremacists Convicted murderer Jared Remy, son of legendary Red Sox announcer Jerry Remy, has been inked with what appears to be a neo-Nazi tattoo. Remy, 35, was photographed with an “88” tattoo on his right hand during a May

27 court appearance. Mark Potok, a senior fellow with the Southern Poverty Law Center, told The Boston Globe that the marking was “definitely a neo-Nazi tattoo.” The law center fights hate and bigotry and REMY’S 88 TATTOO POOL PHOTO

seeks justice for “the most vulnerable members of our society,” according to its website. The 88 stands for “HH” — as H is the eighth letter in the alphabet. In neo-Nazi hate groups, “HH” references “Heil Hitler,” Potok said. The tattoos are common among white inmates, he said. Remy is serving a life sentence for murdering his girlfriend. BE VIGILANT ABOUT VACATION HOMES I was online looking for a vacation rental on the Cape and found an offer that knocked the others out of the park. The price was right and the pictures were gorgeous. I was about to contact the seller when I noticed the listing had been abruptly taken off of the website. What could have happened here? My best guess is that someone reported the rental as a fraud and it was removed by the website’s managers. The phony vacation home is a fairly common scam, especially in the summer months. The scammer lists a home for rent with great pictures and an appealing offer, but they ask for money up front, usually by wire transfer. This is a red flag. A great trick for spotting these scams is to do a reverse Google image search on any pictures from a listing. If the

My health insurer just mailed me some information on a cost estimator tool that they are making available. They said it would help reduce my out-of-pocket health care costs. Is this really going to bring down my costs? Isn’t

this going to just affect the company’s bottom line? My office does oversee the state’s Division of Insurance, and we have been paying careful attention to health insurers and their cost estimators. Because of a new state law, every health insurer in Massachusetts is required by October to offer an online cost estimator to their members. Right now, you can get cost information about procedures and different doctors and hospitals by phone. These tools will lead to lower prices because health care consumers will know what their treatment will cost them before they go to the doctor’s office. This means that consumers can shop around for the best value and providers will have to compete for their business. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

Yes, this weekend was moving day for billions of college students, as you probably noticed more than a few ratty couches sitting curbside as you made your way through the city, but undergrads aren’t the only ones heading to new digs. Michelle Williams is gearing up to leave Brooklyn and move back to Los Angeles to make securing film roles easier, and apparently her 8-year-old daughter, Matilda, is looking forward to finding new ways to dodge the paparazzi, according to Radar Online. “Matilda is joking that she’s going to impersonate Suri Cruise, a source says. “They have a set of disguises they use specifically in Los Angeles that makes them completely unrecognizable to photographers and allows them to have long mother/daughter days in complete privacy. She’s apparently looking to make her recent trip to the U.K. more of a permanent one by snagging a place to live and ditching her current home of New York City, according to the Sun. “Lindsay’s really enjoying

Interview. Sharlto Copley thinks ‘Maleficent’ critiques male aggression South African actor Sharlto Copley (“District 9”) has put a lot of thought into the decisions his character Stefan makes in “Maleficent,” namely betraying the title fairy (played by Angelina Jolie) and setting her on a path of revenge. And that thought quickly became a lot of thinking about society, gender roles and the male ego.

This film depicts old-school

male aggression as being very outdated and harmful. It’s not surprising that we’re getting to a point where women are going, “Listen, this male energy is really messing up the world.” Again, I’m stereotyping, but there is a male type of ego and a male energy in the world. If you go back

Quoted

“How many stories can I tell you of very successful men who destroyed their families. … That’s what King Stefan is — in an extreme version.” Copley

Do you think women still like a classic masculine attitude, even though that can be extremely harmful to the environment and to the world? You could argue that now women can do more of what they want to do. But there is still something in women that likes a guy who’s a strong guy. But when you run away with that and you don’t use that strength for protection, you can’t be surprised that women are starting to say, “We don’t like this” and having to fight back in a way. I think the female influence is very big in this film. to look at it in evolutionary terms, it was there to protect families from saber-toothed tigers. That’s what we did, that’s why we were useful. The world doesn’t need that in the same way anymore, so now you have this drive, this male energy, that’s left unchecked and what does it do? You see this more and more that men, as they become more powerful, those two primal male urges come up — which I think almost any man can relate to, if their honest with themselves — of protecting and conquering.

Stefan is pretty much the villain in this story, but you can’t really oversimplify him as such, can you? I don’t like playing villains. I’m not an actor who enjoys it more. But in this case, I felt like this was an opportunity in a very female-centered film to make a cautionary tale for men of what can happen to that male ego, the male desire and ambition for power. It’s a very stereotypically male trait. And when that runs away with itself and is left unchecked, what happens then? How many stories can I tell you of very successful men who destroyed their families — they traded in their wives for younger versions as soon as they were successful, they didn’t spend time with their kids. That’s what King Stefan is — in an extreme version.

Credit the kids for quick turnaround MLB. The Red Sox have been sparked by their younger players in their seven-game win streak. The same young players who were blamed for the mid-May swoon have sparked the Red Sox to seven straight victories. “We’re relying on them,” manager John Farrell said. “They are getting everyday atbats and their contributions are needed. You see their confidence grow with each passing day.” Perhaps the biggest catalyst has been Xander Bogaerts. On May 10 Bogaerts was hitting .172 (5-for-29) with one extra-base hit during that stretch. Since, he’s hit .392 (19for-74) with 11 extra-base hits.

Streaking Sox The Red Sox will look to make it eight wins in a row Monday night in Cleveland as they face former manager Terry Francona and the Indians (7 p.m., NESN). •

Jackie Bradley Jr. has also been a youngster under fire recently, but the center fielder drove in two runs Saturday and scored a run Sunday in wins over Tampa Bay.

With Sunday’s 4-0 win over the Rays, the Sox have tied the MLB record for the longest win streak following a 10-game losing streak.

Another jolt has come from 25-year-old Brock Holt. Holt was recalled on May 17 when Will Middlebrooks went on the disabled list with a fractured finger. Holt has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games, and is sporting a .337 batting average.

Also, to give the team a lift, Farrell changed the batting order around to have Holt leading off and Bogaerts in the No. 2 hole. The change has worked as the team has won seven of those 11 games and the pair has given the Sox some much-

needed stability at the top of the order. Holt had four hits and drove in a pair of runs in Sunday’s 4-0 win over the Rays. RYAN HANNABLE @ryanhannable

The Sox are now 27-29 on the 2014 season and are six games behind the first place Blue Jays in the AL East. The Yankees (29-26) and Orioles (28-27) are also above the Sox in the standings.

SPORTS NBA

Love sighting in Hub Minnesota forward Kevin Love was spotted in Boston this past weekend at several establishments and he also met up with Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo at Sunday’s Red Sox game. The Celtics are rumored to be interested in acquiring Love.
