U.S. Attorney Stephanie Siegmann asked Kadyrbayev during cross examination. “Yes,” Kadyrbayev replied. Three people were killed and 264 injured in the April 15, 2013, blasts at the marathon’s Boylston Street finish line. Woman saves two kids from Wakefield crash scene A mother sacrificed herself to spare the two young children she was pushing in a stroller when a truck making an illegal turn sent a light post crashing down toward them. The woman, who is the mother of one of the children, was hurt as a result of the crash that occurred just before 9 a.m. Tuesday in Wakefield. Police said the woman was pushing a 5-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl in a stroller at the same time a paving truck made an illegal turn and struck a metal light pole, knocking it over. The pole then fell into the path of the woman and the children. She then pushed the children to safety, but was herself hit by the pole, police said. She suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. Police will likely cite the driver. METRO

Mayor Walsh wants the off-campus addresses of college students Mayor Marty Walsh and leaders from nearly two dozen universities met on Tuesday over safety concerns for the thousands of college students that live in off-campus housing. Walsh’s office said in a statement that he asked the colleges to give the addresses of students who are living off-campus to the city within 30 days. The effort is to ensure that landlords are adhering to the city’s zoning regulations that limit unsafe living, dangerous egress conditions and the number of full-time undergraduate unrelated students sharing an apartment, the city said. The effort comes after the Globe Spotlight series examining the off-campus student housing market. METRO

Collins took to Twitter to congratulate Loughnane. “Congrats to Brian on a well-played victory! Thought he’d be a tough opponent, and, well, he was,” Collins posted on Twitter. Hub getting hit by horror, zombie con Walker stalkers. Many of “The Walking Dead” cast members will take part in the event later this month. If you happen to come across a bunch of zombies walking around Boston next week, don’t be alarmed, they’re probably just convention attendees. Walker Stalker Con, a threeday zombie and horror convention put on by a pair of men who run a popular podcast focused on the hit show “The Walking Dead,” is scheduled to make its Boston debut on June 13. It will be the third ever Walker Stalker Con, following two others in Atlanta last year and Chicago in March. More than a dozen cast members from “The Walking Dead” are scheduled to attend, including Jon Bernthal, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Chad Coleman and Brighton Sharbino.

James Frazier cofounded the convention with Eric Nordhoff. The two host The Walker Stalkers podcast and got the inspiration for the event after visiting Georgia to watch a filming of the show. They put the idea on Kickstarter and more than 160 people donated $16,000 for the first convention. Frazier said he expects up to 20,000 people to attend the convention over the weekend. “These are some of most passionate, but genuine and good people who love something that’s kind of on the fringe,” he said. “But with the popularity of “The Walking Dead,” it’s kind of in the mainstream now.” Fans can participate in meet-and-greets, panel discussions with cast members, get turned into zombies by makeup artists, attend a zombie bash and costume contest and see actors from other films including “The Boondock Saints” and “Night of the Living Dead.” MICHAEL NAUGHTON @MetroBosMike

Obama defends swap to recover Bergdahl Criticism. He said his administration had told lawmakers earlier about a possible swap. President Barack Obama on Tuesday defended the deal to get U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl out of Taliban captivity, saying questions about the circumstances of the soldier’s capture did not negate the need to bring him home. Speaking at a press conference in Poland, he also said the United States would be able to “go after” the five Taliban prisoners who were released in exchange for Bergdahl if they posed a new threat to U.S. security. Terrorism. After violence, US revives group to fight homegrown extremists The United States is re-establishing a law enforcement group to fight those it designates as domestic terrorists, the Department of Justice announced Tuesday. Following hate-motivated shootings, such as the one at a Jewish Community Center in Kansas City, Missouri, in April, federal prosecutors have pressed the need to coordinate intelligence about such criminals on a national level, Justice Department officials told Reuters. The Department of Justice will reconstitute a task force that was originally formed after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing but dissolved after the Sept. 11, 2001 hijacked plane attacks as law enforcement agencies focused on threats from militants abroad. On Tuesday, Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement that the United States remains concerned about threats from Islamic extremists, but the group will focus on other motives for attacks within U.S. borders. Events like the 2013 bombing of the Boston Marathon, in which the attackers appeared to be influenced by extremists abroad, would not fall under the jurisdiction of the group, named the Domestic Terror-

GOING OUT

A city with great Taste Somerville. Head to Davis Square to try out the city’s wide range of dining options. There’s been a wealth of restaurants opening in Somerville in the past couple years, joining an already impressive and diverse array of options. On June 11, some old favorites and highly anticipated newcomers take over Davis Square for the 16th Taste of Somerville. After last year’s event at the Holiday Inn, organizer David Flanagan of the Somerville Chamber of Commerce Dining and Nightlife Group said a move to a bigger space was needed to accommodate all the restaurants. Over 40 will participate, and 800 guests are expected — twice as many as last year. Going outside changes what the restaurants can offer, he says. “Being outdoors means we can utilize grills and rotisseries, which brings a whole different element to it. It’s going to be on par with the Taste of Cambridge.” If you go

Among the restaurants participating are Somerville favorites Highland Kitchen, Daddy Jones, Five Horses Tavern, The Independent and Pescatore. Flanagan is enthused about the newer offerings as well. “It’s $40, it’s a steal. I’ve got Bergamot and Kirkland Tap and Trotter, higher-end restaurants like that.” It’s also a chance to try out restaurants before they open. “Brass Union, that’s not open yet, it’s going in the old Precinct space, it’s going to be a different cool spot,” he says. “We’re featuring six restaurants from the new Assembly Row, Legal C Bar, Tony C’s, Fuji Sushi, River Bar and J.P Licks.” In order to help guests get a better sense of the city’s restaurant geography, the event will be organized by neighborhood. “The layout is like a map of Somerville,” he says. “It starts at Assembly Row, then you’ve

got the Broadway restaurants, Davis Square, Union Square. Everyone will know, ‘OK, I’m in Davis Square now.’” Along with the food, expect local breweries, including Bantam Cider, Somerville Brewing Company and Aeronaut Brewing. Proceeds from the event go to the Somerville Home, an assisted-living facility. “The Taste of Somerville is such a great way to familiarize yourself with all the amazing restaurants in our community,” Alex Jenkins, chef of Foundry on Elm says. “Everyone is putting their best foot forward. This area has such a richness that is different from other parts of New England, and I think that will really come across during this event.”

Color theory One of the easiest ways to differentiate your office space from your living space is the paint scheme. “Don’t be afraid of color,” advises McDaniel. “Branch out from the main colors in your home — it will help create a different feel as you transition from the kitchen into your place of work.”

No more fluorescents

Light the way There’s nothing less inspiring than cubicle-farm fluorescents. If you’re working on your own turf, soften things up overhead, then add additional task lighting near your desk. Pro tip: To free up space, McDaniel recommends ditching the desk lamp and going for wall-mounted fixtures.

Making your home office work for you Homework. The kitchen table is not the place to conduct business. If you’re lucky enough to work from home, you know that no work, in the history of work, has ever been done on the couch. Same goes for the kitchen table. some room to be used strictly for business. “Closets, nooks, attics -— if you need a home office, the space can be found,” says McDaniel. “Look carefully: Is there a large closet that could be converted into an office? Is there a part of a room that would work with a space divider?”

Desk direction A little feng shui goes a long way when it comes to your productivity. “Never put a desk so that the person sitting at it has her back to the door,” says McDaniel. “It’s very unnerving to work without being able to see the doorway.”

Technically, it’s for guys, but how many guys do you know who wear (or admit to wearing) a BB cream? Granted, your beau might not have this on his bathroom shelf at present, but advise him to pick it up for you. Lightweight and relatively translucent, Lab Series’ BB Tinted Moisturizer evens out your skin tone and gives you a good nonshiny base.

You’re at his place and forgot your perfume. Can you really get away with a spritz of his cologne? If it’s Creed he’s stashing, then the answer is yes. Whether you go for the Original Santal scent, the Original Vetiver or the Neroli Sauvage, prepare to be impressed, as these fragrances manage to be just as appealing on him as they are on you.

I think many of us would agree that generally, men’s razors are better than women’s. And none more so than Gillette. These blades are sturdy and glide well, and they don’t rust or become dull in two uses. And most importantly, they catch all of the hairs.

Scaramouche & Fandango

“Exfoliating doesn’t have to be a sand-blasting session,” says the label on Scaramouche & Fandango’s face scrub. Finally, a product that understands us. We’re sick of face scrubs that are one extreme or the other — either barely noticeable or rough and painful. S&F’s “cell energizing” face scrub contains microbeads and prickly-pear extract, which offer perfect pore-cleansing but without painful overexfoliation.

REN Skincare

Some facial moisturizers that promise the world (anti-aging, tone-correcting, elasticity-refining and so on) also leave us with an almost reflective sheen. Bulldog’s Original moisturizer is different. It’s just a moisturizer. No frills, no flounces — that’s it. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we want. The Original Moisturizer is one of our favorite products in the line. Packed with essential oils, green tea, vitamin E and konjac mannan, it leaves your skin smooth, soft and hydrated.

Granted, this product line is marketed as unisex, but how many of us ladies would ever pick up an aftershave balm or shaving oil? If you’re a DIY hair removal kind of gal, we bet ingrown hairs, shaving nicks and dry skin are daily occurrences, right? For a smoother, closer shave, try using REN Shaving Oil before you take to the razor, and like magic, you’ll also notice far fewer nicks.

Beauty products to steal from your boyfriend Late night, home to his, no beauty products in tow, so it’s his grimy soap or nothing. We’ve all been there. But wait, what’s this? A whole cabinet of his products that we a) had been oblivious to and b) hadn’t been invited to use … yet. Now we’ve found them. The only thing we’re missing now is straighteners and scrunchies. Boys? ALICE TATE

MenScience

FIT Skincare

Jack Black

If the ever-ubiquitous trusty tin of Nivea cream doesn’t agree with your complexion, try MenScience’s Face Lotion. It smells fresh and isn’t overpowering, and it’s rich and effective. Plus, we’d be lying if we said we didn’t love the look of the minimal packaging on our bathroom shelves, too.

FIT Skincare is a new clinically developed line especially for dudes; the line focuses on body sculpting and antiaging, with such offerings as the Pec & Ab Sculpt and a Slim & Tone gel, but it’s the Lip-Solve we’re obsessed with: Thick, k, rich and shine-free, this balm protects from sun damage while repairing and hydrating.

Jack Black’s range of wash products is as appealing to girls as it is to guys, and ultimately does the same job: namely, cleaning us. If you hate the sickly sweet smell of floral body washes and fruity cleansers, Jack Black is perfect for you.

MAKE YOUR WEDDING GO VIRAL WedPics Platforms: iOS and Android Price: Free

This is one of the more sedate shots you can post on the wedding-pic app WedPics. / PROVIDED

As it’s warm but not yet sticky and gross, June is one of the most popular months for weddings. But weddings can’t just be an awkward mishmash of family and chummy reprobates getting drunk (or worse, idly chatting because there’s no hooch). The future is now, so we need to spend, say, half that time staring at our phones, right? Weddings need to go viral, so the many who were not invited to the festivities can feel as though they were there and also to capture those in mid-Elaine dance. WedPics makes this easier. It’s a social-media app that allows invitees to share photos of the bride and/or groom instantly to the app while the wedding is still going on — all while some poor professional photographer scampers about, trying to act all Robert Capa (look him up!). This way, guests’ artless snapshots that they’ll Instagram-filter into

beauty later can be grouped by wedding in an organized fashion. Users can then rifle through the thicket of mass photos afterwards,or gawk at pictures of the best man making an awkward face during his awkward toast. One fun thing about this app is that you can meet fellow “photographers” you might not have otherwise met at the wedding: “Oh, you’re the one who posted the photo of the graffiti you saw on your way in!” (The pictures you upload need not be idyllic pics of the happy couple; you can technically put anything that’s in your phone on WedPics). But remember that a wedding audience includes little kids and grandparents. Don’t post anything you wouldn’t say over the mic to all of these people.

7 Minute Workout Challenge Platforms: iOS and Android Price: $1.99 Last year there was a great deal of buzz about an exercise regimen designed by scientists that purported to give you an effective full-body workout in only seven intense minutes. Mixing jumping jacks, push-ups, planks, lunges and weird-looking wall-sits, you power you through each set with brief bouts of respite before dipping back in. When your seven-minute workout is done, you’re free to go back to eating pounds of bacon. Many apps have sought to capitalize on the gimmick, but one of the better and cleaner ones is the 7 Minute Workout Challenge. A nicesounding trainer guides you through each workout. New invention. Sacrebleu! Microsoft has created a universal translator

@bdcnow

Besides holodecks and food replicators, one of the greatest innovations dreamed up by “Star Trek” writers was the universal translator. This handy gadget automatically translated speech so its characters could converse in real-time with pointy-eared aliens and the like. Now, thanks to Microsoft, that technology exists in the real

world. The company has been researching how to do this for nearly two decades and they’ve finally hit pay-dirt. The system uses Skype, and all you have to do is place a call to someone in another country and let the computer do the heavy lifting. Online demos seem to be running smoothly, with calls placed

to Germany and France. The only drawback is that you have to wait until the person is done speaking before you hear what was said in your preferred language, so it’s not exactly in real-time (yet). Microsoft says this technology should be available to consumers by the end of the year. Who wants to prank call Japan?! LAWRENCE BONK

Tread with confidence

It feels like runners are suddenly everywhere, in bright colors along sidewalks and all over the parks. But instead of dodging them, how about joining them? Today is National Running Day, and there are few easier ways to get fit than lacing up a pair of kicks and taking to the streets. “It’s almost like, why aren’t you running?” jokes Giovanni Jimenez, a manager at Brooklyn Running Co. “I don’t think [racing] has a lot to do with our sport anymore; you have a lot of people participating.” While the convenient thing about running is that you can do it pretty much anywhere, not every shoe is created equal. We asked Jimenez what’s best on various city terrains.

Asphalt

Streets and paved paths want something “soft and squishy that you can manipulate” with a feeling “like stepping into cake.” Ultimately, it comes down to preference: Are you looking for something lightweight or a workhorse that can collect miles? Every brand has a signature feel: “It’s sort of like picking your own mattress,” Jimenez says. “Which one is more comfortable?”

Trail “I would pay attention to the tread on the shoe,” Jimenez suggests. Lightweight trail shoes that can dig into the dirt a little better are ideal;

W WELLBEING

Mizuno Wave Sayonara Indoor running has its benefits. “You’re already removing a ton of the impact; you’re not running on the asphalt, that treadmill is going to flex a little bit,” Jimenez says. Opt for a “nice little racing flat or lightweight trainer” like the Mizuno Wave Sayonara ($120), which is especially easy on the midsole. EVA KIS @thisiskis

think road vs. mountain tires on a bike. Nike’s waffle tread is iconic for a reason. Try the Nike Zoom Terra Kiger ($125), “a good example of a true trail shoe.” If you want to go off the beaten path, consider Inov-8, a British shoe company that’s a darling of the Crossfit movement.

Long distance The Brooks Running Glycerin 12 ($150) has “a ton of cushion,” and the newest model has shed nearly an ounce of weight. The shoe has what Brooks calls an “ideal pressure zone” to distribute shock evenly along the foot for maximum absorption.

Expert advice

Get the right fit Going into a running-centered store can feel intimidating, acknowledges Matthew Rosetti, co-founder of Brooklyn Running. But the equipment and expertise can help you not just find the right shoe, but one that heads off potential problems. “Running

is a repetitive stress-type activity,” he says. “So over time, incrementally, you can develop some repetitive stress injuries as a result of imbalances.”

NIKE ZOOM TERRA KIGER ($125)

At Brooklyn Running, the experts ask about a runner’s habits and injury history, then assess their gait to choose a shoe and recommend possible corrective action, like stretching or orthotics. “We’re not doctors, and we don’t believe that any one piece of footwear can be truly corrective. But it’s a good place to start.”

New coal rules hurt the poor

Down with those sneaky Republicans

from the 1970s, which was not intended to regulate carbon dioxide. Obama laments the increasing disparity between rich and poor in the U.S., but his regulation will cause increased electricity rates, which would hurt the poor much more than the rich. England has a carbon dioxide tax and the London Spectator has said that there have been many winter deaths among the elderly because they cannot pay the high energy cost. During the period of comment, I hope Americans will speak out against this unwise and unnecessary regulation.

Following the huge increase in U.S. production of natural gas from shale, electricity from coal has already dropped from 50 to 37 percent of the total, which pleases environmentalists. Why then does President Obama now introduce a carbon dioxide regulation against coal plants which the Chamber of Commerce says will cost $50 billion and kill jobs at a time when many Americans are still struggling to find work? He does this on the basis of a Clean Air Act

Why is there ANY discussion of Edward Snowden? He is 100 percent irrelevant. He’s just the messenger. The right wing and corporate media changed the subject from “America’s government is committing international crimes and national crimes and lied to all their allies” to “Is Snowden a traitor or villain?” which is a pointless, evasive question. The ISSUE is: “Who in our government should be

GEORGE CHRISTIAN, VIA EMAIL

arrested” and “Yet again the Republicans all got caught lying to us, so why should they ever be listened to again?” Did you see the GOP say Snowden’s info was false? Nope. It was all true. We have met the enemy. And it’s our own government. Just like in 1776. And that is the ONLY thing we should all be discussing, as the GOP destroys our nation. JANICE AMATO, VIA EMAIL

MLB power rankings | by Ryan Hannable No. 1

No. 3

The Giants continue to roll and have separated themselves from the rest of the NL as they have now won eight of their last 10. It isn’t just one strong area in which the Giants are excelling as they’re among the best in the league both offensively and from the mound. They have the second-best team ERA (3.02) and average 4.33 runs per game, third in the NL. They have a relatively easy stretch coming up as well.

No. 2

No. 11

Brewers (35-23)

Dodgers (31-28)

Rangers (29-28)

After struggling a bit the past few weeks, the Brewers have picked it up, winning seven of their last 10 games to open up a five-game lead in the NL Central. Milwaukee’s offense continues to lead the way, averaging 4.24 runs per game.

Unfortunately for the Dodgers, they are in the NL West with the powerful Giants running away with the division. San Fran has a seven-game lead. Los Angeles has an impressive 18-11 mark on the road, but is just 13-17 at home.

Texas is playing better baseball of late, but is still third in the AL West behind the Angels and the soaring A’s. The Rangers have won six of their last 10 games, but are still searching for consistency from their pitchers.

No. 12

Blue Jays (34-24)

Angels (30-26)

Mariners (29-28)

The Blue Jays had an unreal month of May to climb to the top of the AL East and have won eight of their last 10 games. Toronto’s plus-39 run differential is the second-best in the AL.

The Angels have been solid the past few weeks, but with the way Oakland’s playing the Halos have now fallen 4.5 games behind in the division. Their offense continues to impress though, at 4.77 runs per game.

Seattle has won three games in a row, but because of such a poor start it is tied for third in the AL West, six games out of first. Their pitching, though, has exceeded expectations with a team ERA of 3.52.

BRANDON WORKMAN WILL LIKELY MISS ONE START.

Workman docked six games, Ortiz lashes out

3 SPORTS

Red Sox pitcher Brandon Workman was hit with a sixgame suspension by MLB for throwing behind the head of Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria last Friday. Rays pitcher David Price, who hit David Ortiz with a pitch earlier in the game, did not receive any discipline. “I think it was some punk-ass s—,” said Ortiz. MATT BURKE

No. 5

No. 13

No. 9

Tigers (31-22)

Cardinals (30-28)

Orioles (28-27)

The good news: The Tigers are in first place in the AL Central. The bad news: They aren’t playing good baseball as they’ve lost six of their last 10. The offense has been sputtering in Detroit.

St. Louis has lost two straight and six of its last 10 to now fall five games behind the Brewers in the NL Central. The Cardinals’ pitching and defense has been the culprit lately.

Although the Orioles have won two in a row, it came following a four-game losing streak, which has them in third place in the AL East. The O’s are currently playing below .500 ball at home (11-12).

No. 6

No. 10

No. 14

Athletics (35-22)

Braves (31-25)

Yankees (29-27)

Marlins (28-28)

Oakland is not just winning a bunch of games, it is dominating and blowing away its competition. It’s tough to find a flaw with this team as they lead the AL in runs per game at 5.19 and have the best team ERA at 2.93.

Although it may not be the most exciting baseball, the Braves are consistent year-in and year-out, especially their pitching staff. Their starting pitching’s 2.91 ERA is the best in MLB. Atlanta will make a West Coast trip later this week.

New York dropped a pair to start the week and allowed Toronto to open up a four-game lead in the AL East. The Yankees’ offense has been shut down of late as in their last six games they have averaged just 2.5 runs per game.

It has been an up-and-down season for the Marlins as it seems as though they will have one good week, followed by a bad week, followed by a good week again. Through it all, they’re in second place in the NL East.

Honest track coach strips own team of title

Cup dreams

North Attleborough High boys track coach Derek Herber realized a day after his team initially captured the Division 2 Eastern Massachusetts title that he, himself, had made a scoring error that helped his team win the title meet by one point. Herber notified the race director of the mistake and Central Catholic High was awarded the championship instead. “It speaks volumes to his integrity,” Central head coach Mike Leal told ESPN. MATT BURKE

Cup Final begins Wednesday The 2014 Stanley Cup Final between the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings begins Wednesday (8 p.m., NBC) and goal scoring is expected to be difficult to come by. New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has a .928 save percentage this postseason while Kings netminder Jonathan Quick has a .906 save percentage in this year’s playoffs.
