Boston’s budding Seaport neighborhood could eventually be home to a hotel known for its micro-rooms and youthful vibe. A developer of the Seaport Square project is proposing to locate a Yotel along Seaport Boulevard in the Innovation District. A spokeswoman for the company said on Wednesday that there were no details to share, but said Yotel is actively looking to become part of the Boston community. John B. Hynes III, managing partner of Boston Global Investors, told the Globe that the 11-story building would include about 300 rooms that range in size from 160 to 200-square-feet. “It’s a high-quality finished product, and there is no wasted space,” Hynes told the Globe. “It’s great for a budgetconscious business traveler who’s popping in and popping out. Bombing. Cabbie told cops about Tsarnaevs A Quincy cab driver pleaded not guilty Wednesday in federal court to charges of lying to federal investigators about his relationship with the Boston bombing suspects. Khairullozhon Matanov, 23, faces one count of destroying records and three counts of making false statements in a federal terrorism investigation. Matanov, a Kyrgyzstan citizen, is accused of deleting computer searches related to the attacks and trying to dispose of cell phones after the FBI released photos of Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev three days after the terror attack. Prosecutors also said Matanov allegedly downplayed his ties to the pair during questioning. Matanov had shown up at a Braintree police station on the morning of April 19, 2013, to identify the Tsarnaev brothers as a massive manhunt was underway for the suspects, FBI agent Timothy McElroy said Wednesday during cross-examination by defense attorney Edward Hayden. However the FBI had not interviewed him until the next day, McElroy said. Matanov named the Tsarnaevs to a detective, McElroy testified, and handed over
their Cambridge address and telephone numbers. Matanov entered the United States in 2010 on a student visa and was later granted political asylum due to ethnic clashes in his home country, according to Hayden. Matanov is not charged with taking part in the bombing, which killed three people and injured more than 260. A judge held Matanov until trial because his lawyers said he lost his taxi driving job after his arrest, but said he may seek release if he finds a place to live. He is due back in court for a hearing on July 15. MORGAN ROUSSEAU
Tailed The FBI has been investigating Matanov since discovering his alleged friendship with the Tsarnaevs. •
There was, however, no “covert” surveillance, according to McElroy, who said Matanov knew he was being followed and on one occasion stopped near Kenmore Square to introduce himself to agents.

Citing a lack of evidence, prosecutors dropped a bomb threat charge against a man who walked through the Boston Marathon’s finish line with a rice cooker yelling “Boston Strong” on the one-year anniversary of the deadly attack. Kevin Edson, 25, had faced a maximum of 20 years in prison on the charge before it was terminated, though he still faces a possible five-year sentence for carrying a hoax device, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office. The office said there was not enough evidence to indict Edson on for a bomb threat because prosecutors did not have proof that he made an overt threat to detonate a bomb. Edson pleaded not guilty to possessing a hoax device and other charges.. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Dramatic Taliban video shows Sgt. Bergdahl dazed 60 seconds. The exchange took just over one minute, from the time the Blackhawk landed to when it took off. A dazed Bowe Bergdahl is led by two militants, one carrying a makeshift white flag on a stick, to a Blackhawk helicopter in eastern Afghanistan, ending his five years in captivity, a Taliban video released on Wednesday showed. In the first publicly aired footage of Bergdahl’s dramatic handover to the U.S. military over the weekend, the clip shows Taliban cadres dotted on nearby hills armed with rocket launchers watching the transfer. “Do not panic,” the militants shout as the Blackhawk lands in the barren valley deep in Khost province, close to the border with Pakistan. Bergdahl, a U.S. army sergeant, was released on Saturday in exchange for five senior insurgent leaders who had been held in a U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, since opening in 2002. Before his rescue, Bergdahl is seen sitting in the rear seat of a four-wheel-drive truck, blinking rapidly, apparently either dazed by the

GM has scheduled a company town hall for CEO Mary Barra, followed by a news conference and a call with analysts to provide an update on the faulty switch, which resulted in the recall of 2.6 million vehicles. Pavlof Volcano
Bering Sea
An Alaska volcano that has been spewing ash and lava for years began erupting with new intensity this week, pushing a plume of smoke and ash as high as 24,000 feet and prompting scientists to issue their highest volcanic alert in five years, authorities said. But the intense action at the Pavlof Volcano, located in an uninhabited region nearly 600 miles southwest of Anchorage, has so far not disrupted any regional air traffic, thanks to favorable weather that has made it easier for flights to navigate around the affected area. Still, the eruption was intense enough for Alaska Volcano Observatory scientists to issue their first red alert warning since 2009, when the state’s Mount Redoubt had a series of eruptions that spewed ash 50,000 feet. “This means it can erupt for weeks or even months,” observatory research geologist Michelle Coombs said of the warning. “I don’t think we will be at red for that long, but we are expecting it to go for a

while based on its past.” Coombs said affected areas are uninhabited except for some hunting destinations. Plumes are created when lava bursts from the crater of the 8,261-foot volcano then falls back on glacier ice, Coombs said. “Right now, with the weather clear, it’s just putting on a good show,” Coombs said. “We’re getting a lot of pilot reports and a lot of good photos, so we’re able to keep a good eye on it.” Pavlof lies below a route frequently used by jetliners flying between North America and Asia, but those planes generally fly at elevations of 30,000 feet and likely would be unaffected by ash at lower elevations, observatory scientists have said. Kourtney Kardashian is preggers
Wouldn’t it have been perfect if Kim had gotten pregnant on her honeymoon with Kanye? Well, it’s probably too early to know that, but her sister Kourtney Kardashian is pregnant with her third child. And yes, it’s Scott Disick who’s the father again, so the story is not really that interesting. Sorry! Sources told US Weekly that the reality star is only a few months along, so I guess we’ll still have to wait a little while to see the baby bump. Katy Perry may write John Mayer songs
At this point, we’ll soon be able to put out a compilation album of songs written about John Mayer. His most recent ex, Katy Perry, tells Cosmopolitan that fans shouldn’t be surprised to hear some tunes on forthcoming albums inspired by their breakup. “There’s no bad blood, but I’m sure there will be inspired songs,” she tells the magazine. Taylor Swift, another of Mayer’s exes, also penned a tune or two about the singer. Mayer, for his part, isn’t too worried about the output. “I have superstrength for gang-ups,” he tells TMZ. “I’m fine. That’s what you’re supposed to do, man. You’re supposed to write songs. ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ What’s more summery than watching a pair of kids with cancer fall in love? Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort play dying teens who fall for each other. They make googly eyes and send cute texts, just like kids who aren’t terminally ill.

‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Insanely, the makers of this sci-fi action flick didn’t stick with the title of the book from which the film was made: “All You Need Is Kill.” Tom Cruise plays a futuristic soldier who keeps reliving the same battle; it’s “Groundhog Day” with angry aliens and big guns.

NAT WOLFF PLAYS ISAAC, A TEEN WITH EYE CANCER WHO JUST GOT DUMPED IN “THE FAULT IN OUR STARS.” / GETTY IMAGES
When you’re watching a romance between two cancerstricken teens unfold, you need some comic relief. In “The Fault in Our Stars” (released June 6), that comic relief is Nat Wolff. In the movie — based on the best-selling book by John Green — Wolff plays Isaac, a teen going blind from eye cancer. But what devastates him more than his disease is that his hot girlfriend leaves him. OK, so a teen with eye cancer who gets dumped isn’t exactly cheery, but Wolff’s irreverence and funny one-liners make him stand out in
this movie. But it is depressing, and Wolff says he couldn’t help getting upset during filming. “I thought I’d have the least heavy job, but then I realized it was way deeper and [more] upsetting than I thought it would be,” he says. “[It was challenging] trying to find how Isaac was using humor to deflect his pain, but then I realized that’s what the whole movie is about: dealing with pain in realistic ways.” Before he started filming, Wolff met a guy who was going through the exact predicament his character was going through: going blind and getting dumped. “I learned kids with cancer are just like anyone else. They’re still getting dumped, they can still be a— holes. Or they can be great, but they aren’t perfect. And they still want to have sex,” he says. Wolff wore blinding contacts while filming and lived two days as though he was completely blind. “I put Tiger Balm on my toothbrush, which almost killed me,” he says. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

No longer quite kids, but still ready to tour Interview. Bruce McCulloch talks of reuniting the kids of Kids in the Hall.
in the very beginning of our career. We’d meet for a few days and then put on a show. People bring material, we write over the phone a bit too. It really speeds things up — or slows things down — when we’re all in a room together.
For the first time since 2008, the Kids in the Hall are touring. Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson make up the Canadian comedy troupe that has gained a loyal cult following since their offbeat sketch show aired in 1988. We had a chance to speak with Bruce McCulloch about their Rusty and Ready tour and the writing process.
Now that you guys are a little older, what’s influencing your material? We’re influenced by all the weird people that we meet in the world. We wrote a piece about foodie culture. That’s something we wouldn’t have written about 10 or 20 years ago. And now we write less about breaking up with girlfriends.
The tour has a lot of new material, but is it true that we’ll also see a few favorite characters return? We got together in Toronto in December and did all new material. From there we picked out our favorite pieces. But yes, there will be new things from characters that people know, so it’s a two-for. I think it’s a good mix of both new material and favorites. How do you workshop the new material? You guys don’t all live in the same area. We did, in this instance, get together to do what we did

Are you ever surprised by the waves of new, younger Kids in the Hall fans? Yes and no. I always find strange old music to get into, but I wasn’t there the first time around. I think we connect with weird outsiders, of which there is a new generation born every day. I’m just more shocked that anyone comes to see us, actually. It’s amazing that we can go to cities and fill up a theater. I’m very touched that people are interested at all. JULIA WEST @MetroBOS

DATING
TIPS FOR PICKING UP BROWN-SKINNED WOMEN
Whenever men who aren’t black ask me, “What’s it like to date a black woman?”I joke, “I’ve never dated one. Ask a lesbian.” For the curious, and fairer-skinned among you: Your wait is over. Here is a simple list of DO’s and DON’Ts for picking up brown-skinned women. Print it out and keep it in your back pocket:
wrong with saying, “I’ve never really had a(n) ___ girlfriend or anything before because ___.” Chances are pretty good that the target of your affections will respect your honesty. By the way, on a related note, don’t lie. No one likes to be led on. So, if you don’t really want to hang out or date a woman of color but you’d just like to hook up with one, there are plenty of places and opportunities to do that.
1
DO keep it simple If you have a friend or acquaintance whose ethnicity doesn’t match yours and you’d like to ask him or her out, say something like: “Hey, what you are doing on Friday? We should hang out.” (Yep, it’s that easy.)
2
DO have an open mind People are unique and interesting creatures. We all come from different ethnicities, economic classes, educational backgrounds and regions of the globe. As a result, we have very individual ideas about how

the world works. When dating anyone, regardless of background, be prepared to brush up against ideas that might run counter to your beliefs. In that case, resist the urge to think your way is “right” and someone else’s is wrong. You might learn something new.
3
DON’T overcompensate Rattling off endorsements such as, “I’ve always loved looking at black women,” “Latinas are saucy,” or “Indian women have such great skin” will only make you look like an ass. On a related note, under absolutely NO circum-

stances should you bust out in a spontaneous freestyle rap to prove how “down” you are. [Le sigh ... if I had a dollar for every time ...]
4
DO be truthful Should the topic come up, I don’t think there’s anything
13
DO treat the object of your affection like a human being I could be completely loony and totally off base with this, but I think most people want to be cherished, loved and desired for who they are. REBEL AGAINST SINGLE-COURSE PASTA MEALS After rising through the ranks at Manhattan’s Momofuku chain, Chef Tim Maslow caused a stir when he returned to town (Watertown, to be exact) to work at his father’s restaurant, Strip T’s. Last summer, he opened his own place in Washington Square and landed James Beard’s Rising Star award. It’s called Ribelle, which, as Google can tell you, means rebel in Italian. In less than a year, Ribelle has settled in as a Boston destination as much as a neighborhood highlight. With its urbane gray design palette, shiny mobiles, small portions and high prices, it’s far from the average Mason jar and wooden bench-type hang. Maslow’s menu centers on humble peasant food such as pasta. But dressing up an affordable staple with squid ink and lobster, as he does in
a delicate plate of squid ink fideos, sends costs soaring. At Ribelle — as those small portions remind us — pasta is something to be savored and isn’t merely for filling the belly. The menu changes nightly but includes a degustazione di pasta, a five-course pasta tasting, which demonstrates how the appreciation for unusual grains has grown in Wonder Bread-loving America. To experience what’s possible in a If you go

humble pasta dish, start here. But Ribelle is not only about pasta; halibut, panroasted and sweetened with pureed sultanas, is served with piquant pickled asparagus spears and a caper pesto. And pasta dishes aren’t necessarily Italian-influenced either. The sturdy buckwheat bigoli noodles in short rib broth with grilled fiddleheads, for example, is more of an AsianRussian fusion. The dulce de leche-sweetened avocado mousse with chewy tapioca and crisped wild rice is pure modern American cuisine.

In 2012, Everclear front man Art Alexakis launched the ’90srevisited Summerland Tour, which is named for a song on his band’s 1995 album, “Sparkle and Fade,” and lined up 1990s powerhouses such as Gin Blossoms and Sugar Ray. But with “Invisible Stars,” a brandnew album to promote, Everclear wasn’t just dusting off old hits. That can also be said of the other bands along for this year’s trek: Soul Asylum, Eve 6 and Spacehog. “Yes, these are giants of ’90s alternative rock radio,” says Alexakis, “but they are real bands; no mothballing, no coming out every summer to eat and then hibernating for the winter.” Hit singles do help build career longevity, and Everclear reaped great success with “Santa Monica” and the autobiographical “Father of Mine” as well as selling millions of albums.

Even as alternative rock gave over to indie rock and the sparkle of Everclear’s stardom faded, Alexakis says he remained busy. “I wouldn’t know what to do if it was quiet,” he says. “I’m the kind of guy who creates drama everywhere I go. ... Even though we don’t get played on the radio all the time now and we don’t have hit records, we’re still busy.” That’s clear: During this conversation, Alexakis excuses himself twice to deal with logistics for the 30-date Summerland spree and is putting the final touches on a new album due out before year’s end. “I still work really, really hard at what I do, both creatively and from a business point of view,” Alexakis says. “I still love it all.”

Learn from previous bans Re: ‘New coal regulations will hurt the poor, cost jobs’ (Metro, June 4) The answer to how President Obama can impose regulations that affect coal-fired power plants is that it imposes the cost on the users of the product (us) rather than the people who will live with the aftermath of climate change (our children and grandchildren). Re: ‘Cut to the core of the problem’ (Metro, May 28) Letter writer Michael McGovern wrote, “It’s not, and never has been, the gun, but always the hand ... that is to blame for these atrocities.” Well, since the United States is not the only country with mentally ill people, why are these types of atrocities not happening elsewhere? The easy access to guns, coupled with mental illness, is a

deadly recipe. If we accept McGovern’s argument that mental illness alone is the driving force behind these massacres, then we must also accept the argument that America’s mentally ill are just more prone to violence than the mentally ill in other countries. Is America’s culture of violence to blame for these atrocities? CAROLYN CASEY, VIA EMAIL

I suspect that people made the same arguments you are when people tried to ban asbestos, or lead in paint, or mandating seat-belts in automobiles. I find it laughable that many of the same voices who decry federal deficits as “kicking the can down the road” and a burden on future generations are shouting down efforts to come to grips with the costs of pollution and its impact on the global climate.

Kaepernick to get paid by 49ers Colin Kaepernick’s bank a ccount is about to balloon. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback struck an extension with the club Wednesday and the new six-year deal is worth over $110 million, according to ESPN. The 26-year-old has led the 49ers to back-to-back NFC Championship games, as well as one Super Bowl appearance, but threw for just 3,197 yards in 2013 — 20th in the NFL. MATT BURKE

Spurs, Heat tip off Finals on Thursday This could be it for the San Antonio Spurs. For real, this time. Rumors of Tim Duncan’s retirement have been growing stronger and it’s hard to imagine the Spurs regrouping yet again if they fall to Miami in the NBA Finals for the second straight season. Game 1 of the Finals rematch is Thursday (9 p.m., ABC) in San Antonio. The two teams split their regular season series as LeBron James and the Heat took the only game in Miami, 113-101, on Jan. 26 and the Spurs took the only game in San Antonio, 111-87, on March 6.

Sterling ready to ‘move on’ Donald Sterling is ready to “move on” as the deal that will make former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer the new owner of the Los Angeles Clippers is about to be finalized. “I’m OK, I’m OK,” Sterling told NBC4 in Los Angeles. “Is the NBA OK? I’m not sure about that. Is [NBA commissioner] Adam Silver OK? I’m sure he’s OK.” Sterling’s lawyer told ESPN he will not go forward with a lawsuit he filed against the NBA. Sterling is facing a lawsuit of his own from a former female employee of his that claims she was subjected to “a steady stream of racially and sexually offensive comments.”

Most Celtics fans are quick to call New York Knicks swingman Carmelo Anthony a selfish ball-hog who has never won a damn thing in the NBA. Come to think of it, Anthony is probably the last All-Star-caliber player in the league that most Celtics fans would want Danny Ainge to build a team around. But ’Melo as a second option? A third option? That would likely be something fans could get behind. There is growing suspicion that Ainge is about to execute exactly what he did in the sum-
The new ‘Big 3?’ An Internet rumor popped up this week that has the Celtics targeting both Kevin Love and Carmelo Anthony. •
Love and Anthony played together for Team USA in the 2012 Summer Olympics.
•
Anthony averaged 25.5 points per game in 2013-14 in New York.
•
Love averaged 26.1 points per game in 2013-14 in Minnesota.
•
Current Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo averaged 11.9 points and 11.7 assists per game in his last fully healthy season in 2011-12.
mer of 2007 — when he found a way to get two ringless superstar players to Boston to put around the Celtics’ incumbent star. New rumors pop up every day regarding Kevin Love’s potential trade to the Hub, but for Love to fully embrace Boston, he would likely need assurance that a third All-Star-level player would join him and Rajon Rondo. The Knicks are obviously trying to convince Anthony to not opt out of his contract this summer, but the odds say ’Melo will at least explore a more desirable situation (read: a place where he could win and get paid immediately). The NBA salary cap is expected to increase from $58.6 million to $63.2 million in 2014-15. The luxury-tax threshold will rise with it. As it stands currently, the $14.2 million the Celtics seemingly
are free spend this summer and the $10.3 million trade exception from last year’s deal with the Nets, will in no way be enough to land Anthony and Love in Boston. But Ainge and his front office number crunchers have gotten creative in the past. One thing is for certain — the last week of this month is going to be the wildest NBA rumor stretch in the history of the league. Will LeBron James opt out? What about Dwyane Wade? What about Chris Bosh? What’s ’Melo going to do? Will Love be dealt? For now it’s all speculation … but Celtics fans can dream, and/or readjust their negative thoughts on a certain Knicks swingman.
