Egg freezing will become as common as the birth control pill within 10 years, according to fertility specialists at Boston IVF, which is why they are hosting a free Fertility on Ice cocktail hour at Faneuil Hall’s Frost Ice Bar. Women who are torn about whether to step straight into motherhood or put the decision on ice are invited to dress warmly and sip cocktails at Frost Bar on June 19 and hear experts explain the basics of fertility preservation. Anesthesiologist Pei-Lin Kim opted to freeze her eggs at age 34 to delay family building. Now 39, Kim says though she is still unsure of her childbearing plans, she is relieved that her eggs are “suspended in time.” “I was single when I had my eggs frozen, and because I work [at Boston IVF], I was more aware of the possibility that as I get older, I might have more trouble getting pregnant,” said Kim, who is still single. “I’d like to raise a family with a significant other, but for me, the time hasn’t come yet. “ Elective egg freezing has gained momentum since the American Society of Reproductive Medicine removed the experimental label from the procedure in 2013. Doctors estimate that more than 5,000 babies have been born with eggs frozen for fertility preservation.

Dr. Alison Zimon, a reproductive endocrinologist at Boston IVF points to a noticeable uptick in women opting for vitrification since she joined Boston IVF in 2006. “It’s no longer investigational; it’s becoming mainstream,” says Zimon. “And it’s wonderful because it’s an option for women to not feel pressured into having babies if it’s not the right time, if the relationship isn’t right or if they have too much going on in their careers.” The Reproductive Science Center of New England has also reported a doubling in the number of consultations for egg freezing over the past two years. “We definitely advise people to think of this before they turn 40. The ideal [time] is under 35. A lot of women do it in the 28-

to-35 age bracket,” said Zimon, adding that a healthy woman with good-quality eggs is looking at a 50 to 55 percent chance of becoming pregnant. But there is a catch: Egg freezing isn’t cheap. It typically costs around $5,000 to freeze the eggs, then as much as $7,000 when the time comes to cash in on them. Despite the empowerment and flexibility egg vitrification offers women, Zimon said she hopes prospective mothers don’t put all their eggs in one frozen basket. “I do feel women should plan childbearing earlier rather than later for so many reasons,” she says. “Think of this as a safety net or a backup plan.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Trial for brothers accused of scam expected to begin today Two brothers charged with trying to scam the Boston Marathon bombing charity The One Fund out of $2 million are set to begin trial today. The pair, Branden Mattier, 23, and Domunique Grice, 28, are accused of attempting to defraud the organization by making a fake claim under the name of an aunt who has been dead for a decade. He is suffering from disorders affecting his skin and gums that could be expected after his five-year captivity, the official said, confirming a report in The New York Times. Bieber believes?

THE WORD Lasse E. Kristiansen takes on the world of gossip. LASSE E. KRISTIANSEN @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

TMZ reports that Justin Bieber was baptized this weekend. The pop star is in need of some cleansing, so that first portion of news makes sense. Over the past year he’s come under fire for bad behavior, most recently for racist videos he made when he was 15 years old. But here’s where it gets a little weird: Apparently Bieber was concerned about being recognized if he were to receive the sacrament in a church, so the baptism was conducted in a bathtub. A pastor in New York City says he spent a week meeting Bieber for “intense Bible study” last month to prepare the singer for the big day.

This weekend saw a lot of famous couples splitting up. Or at least, admitting that they split up a while ago and hoping they could make their announcements quietly over a beautiful weekend when hardly anybody was online. Most shocking was probably Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith, who are divorcing after 18 years of marriage. Griffith filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, and also asked for child and spousal support. On the other side of the Atlantic, Scottish DJ Cal-

RITA ORA AND CALVIN HARRIS

vin Harris and singer Rita Ora also announced that they split a few months ago after dating for more than a year. (We

admit, we had actually forgotten they were a couple.) Last but not least, sources say that Jennifer Lopez and Casper Smart also split after two-and-a-half years together. Evidently, the split occurred before Smart was reportedly caught sexting with a transsexual bikini model. So technically he wasn’t cheating then, right? Smart was actually seen leaving JLo’s house in LA on a motorcycle this weekend, however, so we guess they must still be on friendly terms.

We would never call Hugh Jackman dull, but his hosting didn’t quite reach Neil Patrick Harris heights.

Tonys. Last year we got an entire circus, this year we got four minutes of kangaroo hops.

Visit metro.us for a complete list of winners and quotes from the media room.

For the 68th annual Tony Awards, Hugh Jackman didn’t want to try to top Neil Patrick Harris’ four years of excellence — leading up to last year’s impressively acrobatic opening number in celebration of “Pippin. Instead, he and the creative team went for a lowkey lead-in, featuring Jackman bouncing through the audience and backstage against overtures from the various musicals that are up for awards this year (an obscure homage to Bobby Van’s sequence in 1953’s “Small Town Girl). Part of his bit included soft jokes about being Australian, which he somehow did not exhaust last time he hosted the Tonys in 2003. And then there

was one joke that, upon hearing Jackman was hosting the awards show this year, NPH reached out with a congratulatory, “Wow, that’s fantastic! — or, at least, that’s what Jackman assumes he meant by “WTF. We also got a brief interlude in which Jackman joined the “After Midnight ensemble in a quick tap number. (“Wolverine in tap shoes — you won’t see that at ComicCon, he quipped.) It’s disappointing that cutesy jokes and a few song-anddance asides summed up the hosting gig this year. It’s classy, it’s just not what we’re used to — and it’s not a competition, so why fear falling short? Probably because nothing says “go big or go home like the Tony Awards.

At the very least, Jackman provided a neutral backdrop for the musical numbers woven throughout the show, including, “One Day More from “Les Miserables, “Friend Like Me from “Aladdin and Idina Menzel’s powerhouse solo of “Always Starting Over from “If/Then. Bryan Cranston won Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for his portrayal of Lyndon Johnson in “All The Way and Audra McDonald won Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill. T. Interview. “Pretty Little Liars” star Sasha Pieterse reveals what’s ahead for her recently revived character. “Pretty Little Liars” may have endless mysteries to reveal each season, as the longanonymous A pursues the four main characters, offering them blackmail threats. But one big mystery has finally been solved (spoiler alert!): We learn that former mean girl Alison DiLaurentis, whose apparent murder kicked off the action in the first season, has been alive the whole time. Now that she’s back in the open, things are likely to

change for everyone, since Alison was no stranger to creating enemies. Sasha Pieterse, who plays Alison, discusses acting in the present tense for a change. Have you always known that Ali would rejoin the other girls? I always anticipated it. In the books, Alison had a twin and that’s who was alive, and when I found that they weren’t going to do the twin theory with Alison, I figured, “OK, something cool’s going to happen.” And [show creator] Marlene King totally blew away my expectations. Are you excited to not exist solely in flashback? I’m so excited. It’s been so

much fun filming, for many reasons. I mean, flashbacks are great … but I get to wear current clothes and there’s characters like Caleb [Tyler Blackburn] who I’ve never had a scene with, and now I have, and those were fun things mainly because I’m really reunited with everyone. Do you ever get weird reactions from fans because of the character you play on the show? When I started the show and I started to see how big it was getting, I totally thought I was going to get hate mail and super weird reactions, because Alison was such a mean character. But I didn’t. It was actually completely the opposite and I thought that was so hilarious. Usually what I get now is, “She’s alive!” Alison’s brother Jason is A, right? Can you please confirm? I think I would get fired.

KIM SCHNEIDERMAN, MSW, LCSW WWW.NOVEL-PERSPECTIVE.COM Kim Schneiderman’s book “Step Out of Your Story: Writing Exercises to Reframe and Transform Your Life,” is due to be published in the spring. Email Kim your questions at askkim@metro.us.

The Question

Ever since I had a baby a few months ago, my mother keeps sending me baby clothes that I don’t like, need or have space for. She constantly texts me with advice. She’s always been like this — doing things for me because it meets her needs, not mine. When I express my irritation, my mother says I’m unappreciative and that it’s unladylike to be angry, which really infuriates me and makes me feel a bit ashamed. What should I do?

11

MAKING ANGER WORK FOR YOU When I was a 20-something living in San Francisco, my Harvard-educated feminist roommate introduced me to “her bible”: Dr. Harriet Lerner’s “The Dance of Anger.” Initially, I couldn’t understand why such a privileged, educated young woman could feel so strongly about a book that explores women’s anger. But as I began to read, many of Lerner’s points and examples resonated with me, only I had been socialized to hide my anger or call it something more acceptable: frustration. While it’s been ages since I read Lerner’s book, a few points have always stuck with me: 1) anger is not only a natural emotion; 2) it’s also a powerful signal worth heeding; 3) when channeled constructively, it can transform relationships. Let’s start with the first point: Anger is natural, hardwired into our brains to protect ourselves against perceived threats. Like other emotions, it triggers physiological and biological reactions in our bodies, including changes in heart rate, blood pressure and adrenaline. So honor your anger — it’s there for a reason. This leads to my second point: Anger is a signal that our boundaries are being violated.

PLUS Kim’s tips

How to cope

Because she doesn’t show respect for your own needs and boundaries, your anger is urging you to push back. But how you push back can make a difference in how she responds and, more importantly, how you feel about yourself. Lashing out at her is only going to make things worse. Yet suppressing your anger isn’t the answer either, especially if this has been an ongoing dynamic. Here are my suggestions:

1 Your anger is natural, but expressing it properly will help keep the peace. / PURESTOCK Quoted

“Anger is natural, hardwired into our brains to protect ourselves against perceived threats.”

Historically, anger rallied men to protect their land, livelihood and family against intruders (perhaps another reason why men are allowed to express anger, even celebrated for it, while “bossy” women are often called a word that rhymes with witches). In your case, your mother is

the intruder into your personal space, undermining your sense of competency. Aside from being a doting grandmother, she clearly has a hard time determining where she ends and you begin. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

Ticks. Tips to stay safe from the bloodthirsty buggers while outdoors You don’t have to traipse through deep wooded areas to pick up a tick this summer. One can latch onto you in any city park. “[They lurk] anywhere there’s grassy vegetation, but especially where the grass is taller,” says Dr. Roberto Posada, an infectious disease specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. The good news is that most tick bites don’t make us sick. There are many different types of them, but the one Northeasterners fear most is the deer tick, which is responsible for causing Lyme disease. As bad as Lyme is, it isn’t as bad as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, another tick-

borne illness common to the Southeast that can be fatal if not treated quickly. Even in this area, though, there are other illnesses — such as babesiosis and anaplasmosis — that come from ticks. The first thing to do if you suspect a bite, Posada advises, is to wash the area well with soap and water to minimize the risk of bacterial infection. A rash is one indication of a bite. The deer tick produces a bull’s-eye rash, while Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever produces small red dots around the feet and hands. Fever, aches and headaches are also symptoms that a tick got you. Ticks are tiny and hard to spot until they’re fat and bloated with blood. (There’s

+ Write an uncensored letter to her that expresses every horrible and annoying thing she has ever done to you. But do not send this letter; it’s intended to help you release anger from your body so that it doesn’t fester or leak out in undesirable ways. Give yourself permission to fully feel your feelings without judging them.

2

Show appreciation while setting clear boundaries. Set up a time (when you’re not in the middle of an argument) to meet. Begin by saying that you appreciate her desire to be helpful and involved with her grandchild. Then, explain that you need some room, free of her feedback, to develop your own parenting style and confidence as a new mother. You might appeal to her own sensibilities: “Mom, you must understand how fun it is to pick out your children’s clothes. I, too, would like to do that for my own daughter.”

3 Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is a great way to get a tick. / IMAGE SOURCE Advice

Prevention and treatment Tick bite infections can be treated with antibiotics. Still, prevention is better, says Posada: “No one wants to

wear long sleeves and pants in summer, but clothing forms a barrier. [Ticks] can’t attach themselves like they can with bare skin. Also, take a shower right after you’ve been hiking, and do a body search.”

not much about ticks that isn’t disgusting, really.) Removing them should be done carefully with tweezers. “They attach by a nozzle, which buries into the skin,” says Posada. “Make sure you grab the nozzle and pull straight out — don’t pull side to side. You want to get all of the tick out.” LINDA CLARKE

Accept that while you can assert your own needs, you can’t control how others respond. If your mother still refuses to respect your wishes, you may need to let go and approach her with a sense of humor. At least you’ve made your case. And if she sends you stuff you don’t need, donate it to charity. At least her goodwill won’t have been completely wasted.

A 21+ Event

Anyone who has been following the state of arts education in schools today knows that one thing is true: Funding for creative programs in schools is constantly under threat. Since 2002, the Tribeca Film Institute has been working with schools across the country to develop the next generation of young filmmakers. Founded by actor Robert De Niro, Craig Hatkoff and De Niro’s longtime producing partner Jane Rosenthal, the Institute runs programs across the country and abroad. “The Film Institute was sort of an unexpected turn,” said Rosenthal recently just before

receiving the Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award for her work with the Institute. “To see kids come out of it and use ‘Tribeca’ as a noun or an adjective. … They’ll say, ‘Oh, I did Tribeca,’ or ‘Are you Tribeca-ing this year.’ And it’s just — how did that happen?” she asked with a laugh. “It’s just an unexpected joy for me to get to have that in my life and to be passionate about that.” While the average filmgoer probably doesn’t know Rosenthal’s name, they’ve almost certainly seen the movies she’s worked on, which include “Analyze This,” “Meet the Parents” and “About a Boy.” Along the way she has also worked with the Institute and other filmmakers to give young people a creative outlet. Last Tuesday, she was honored by the Montblanc Cultural Foundation and De Niro himself for her longtime advocacy of the arts. As Lutz Bethge of the foundation puts it, Rosenthal had a

significant impact on the arts and the state of the creative industry in Lower Manhattan, particularly after September 11. “I think she did something extraordinary for the film industry,” says Bethge, “because she gave young directors an opportunity by giving this area new hope, bringing in young people and giving them a new direction, allowing them to find their own way.” Since the Institute began 12 years ago, Rosenthal has become a passionate advocate of encouraging creativity in schools. “Art programs have been slashed, that’s the first thing to go,” she notes. “And after that it’s sports programs. Every kid needs a break where you can express yourself in different ways. It’s not just English and algebra that you need functional knowledge in.” The star producer also sees bigger and better things for the Institute in the years to come. “I would like the program to be in every one of New York City’s public schools. I would love to see it grow nationally and internationally. … So I think I have a bit of fund-raising to do in that case,” she says. LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi lakshmi.gandhi@metro.us

Happiness at work starts with finding the right fit Know yourself. Finding the perfect job starts with assessing your personality. On the surface, the advice that young people should select careers that fit their personalities seems obvious, but a quick look at the stats reveals that it’s anything but. A survey released last year by Gallup revealed that nearly two-thirds of employees from more than 180 countries reported that they were “not engaged at work and that a mere 13 percent of employees currently feel passionate about their work. None of the figures are surprising to Paul Tieger. For more than 30 years, helping people find fulfilling career paths has fascinated Tieger and has driven his own career and work. Along with Barbara Barron and his millennial-aged daughter Kelly Tieger, the author has just released the fifth edition of “Do What You Are: Discover the Perfect Career for You Through the Secrets of Personality Type, which is geared toward the current generation of professionals. “When you are doing something that is not about who

NO SCAPEGOAT TO BE FOUND FOR 2014 SOX So, this after-party is kind of a dud, huh? The 2013 Red Sox season was that kickass ripper no one ever wanted to end, but now — in the dreaded year after — it seems as though we’ll be taking nothing but Tylenol and Pedialyte to get us through the summer. The odds weren’t on Boston’s side from the beginning of the season, of course, as no team has won back-to-back World Series titles since the Yankees from 1998-2000. And even the most die-hard of Sox fans would have to admit the 2013 Red Sox were not nearly as talented as those Yanks. Heading into last night’s nationally televised game in Detroit, the Sox once again held the longest losing streak in baseball (tied at five games with the Mets). Just two weeks ago, it was the same deal. Few teams in MLB could keep up with the Sox in terms of being on the wrong side of the slate. The mounting losses are not likely the product of weak effort — which is why it’s probably unfair for this team to be booed later this week at Fenway. But there absolutely has to be some subconscious relaxation period going on

here for many players who led the Sox to glory last year. Part of the problem for fans this season is that there’s not really any one person, in particular, to blame for the horrid record. It’s hard to complain too much about the big name guys — David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester, John Lackey — as they’re all having adequate seasons. There are even some young players who have stepped up of late — Brock Holt, Xander Bogaerts and Rubby De La Rosa. A.J. Pierzynski is surely “boo-able in some fans’ eyes, but the facts say he’s fourth among AL catchers in RBIs, is on the radar for an All-Star selection and is basically doing what most thought he would do before the season began — irritate some, but hit .275 and drive in runs. Stephen Drew, he with the .091 batting average, is an easy target for holding out so long. But his agent, Scott Boras, deserves the chunk of that blame. And it’s highly unlikely the boo birds will have the opportunity to chastise him when he’s in the field at Fenway later this week, because he won’t be making any mistakes at short anytime soon.

What should we really expect of him? There’s just really no one to point the finger at ‌ and that’s frustrating. So maybe we’ll just have to sit back, complain mildly about this 2014 team as a whole, but

never get too carried away. They’re simply not as good as the 2013 group because the 2013 group was a team that set out to right wrongs. Subconsciously, at the start of this season, there were no more wrongs to right.

OPINION MATT BURKE

Chrome owner still upset California Chrome co-owner Steve Coburn continued to bash horse racing’s rules Sunday. “These people nominate their horses for the Triple Crown and then they hold out two [races] and then come back and run one, Coburn told ESPN. “That’d be like me at 6-foot-2 playing basketball with a kid in a wheelchair.
