Poll: Baker narrows gap on Coakley in GOP primary governor race A new poll shows that Republican candidate for governor Charlie Baker has narrowed the lead of the Democratic front-runner. The results of a statewide poll by Suffolk University were released on Monday. Baker, who trailed Attorney General Martha Coakley by 13 points in February, is now 7 percent behind in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup, according to the poll results. Of the 800 voters surveyed, 36 percent said they would vote for Coakley while 29 percent chose Baker. About 27 percent of those surveyed were undecided. METRO

Micro-Hub. A pair of minimalists will speak this week about their lifestyle change. Space in Boston is at a premium and with micro-apartments and a micro-hotel being eyed for the Hub, minimalist living may be a lesson Bostonians are going to quickly learn. But learning to live with the bare essentials is more than getting rid of a collection of old Red Sox hats, unused cookbooks and a pile of yellowing ticket stubs. It’s a mindset change, said minimalist Joshua Fields Millburn. “Ultimately minimalism isn’t about deprivation, but asking does this thing add value to your life,” he said. “It goes beyond the stuff and spills into other areas like my relationships and my health and pursuing things I’m passionate about.” Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, both 32, call themselves “The Minimalists.” The childhood best friends from Ohio were in their late 20s, had homes, cars and jobs with a telecommunications company that earned them six-figure salaries when a few years ago they realized they weren’t happy, reassessed and switched to minimalist living. The two now live in apartments in Montana, have written two books about their change and are on a book tour that brings them to Boston for a talk on Wednesday. Millburn said he sees the minimalist lifestyle catching on, and not just because of the interest in smaller living

Thirty teenagers and supporters staged a sit-in inside the MassDOT building Monday to demand a youth pass allowing 12- to 21-year-olds to buy a monthly MBTA pass for $10. The Youth Affordabili(T) Coalition said Transportation Secretary Richard Davey agreed in 2011 to pilot the

youth pass if the group found a way to fund the project. “We have, but we keep being asked to wait,” said Kenisha Allen of the YAC Leadership Team. The sit-in, which police said caused capacity issues, was meant to pressure Davey to make good on his word. METRO

Cops: Man stole gallons of peach vodka in smash-and-grab Police in Springfield said that officers are investigating a theft from a city liquor store in which a man stole gallons of peachflavored vodka. Officers were called to the Allen Street liquor store in the early morning hours of Sunday for a report of a breaking and entering. Police said a man smashed the store’s window and stole several gallons of New Amsterdam peach vodka. Officers searched the area with police dogs but could not find the man. They later found opened bottles of New Amsterdam peach alcohol in an abandoned house. Detectives are investigating. METRO

Plane hits another on Logan strip Wing ding. The FAA is investigating after two jets made contact as one left the gate Monday. A Southwest Airlines jet backing away from a gate at Boston’s Logan International Airport clipped an empty, parked JetBlue Airways plane early Monday. An airport spokesman said the Kansas City-bound Boeing 737 was backing away from the gate around 7 a.m. when its left wingtip struck the right horizontal stabilizer of the stationary JetBlue Airbus 320 parked at Gate 11 at Terminal C. More than 100 passengers were on board the Southwest flight when it happened, though officials said there were no injuries and no impact to airport operations. Passengers were placed on other flights,

and the jet was taken out of service to be repaired and inspected. Flight 4552 passenger Marcia Mitchell Cardello told WBZ that the impact felt like “little bump.” “I was glad it happened on ground and not in flight,” Mitchell Cardello said. Aubin Dubois of Dallas told the radio station the collision made her feel like the plane got stuck. “I felt like we weren’t able to move,” Dubois said, adding that Southwest gave passengers a $200 voucher and asked for patience while officials assessed the damage. Damage to the Southwest jet’s wingtip was evident, however the JetBlue plane appeared unharmed. The Federal Aviation Administration said the incident is under investigation. US Olympic Committee meeting today in Boston In the running. The city is a possible host site of the 2024 Summer Games. The U.S. Olympic Committee’s board of directors is scheduled to meet in Boston today, adding to speculation that the city is a top contender to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. The Boston Business Journal reports that Washington, San Diego, Los Angeles, Dallas and San Francisco are also on the list for consideration. New York and Philadelphia have withdrawn their candidacy. Obama easing school debt law Worth the wait. The president moves to lessen student loan burden, though the action won’t take effect until 2015. President Barack Obama on Monday signed an executive order making it easier for up to 5 million people to pay off college tuition debt, and scolded congressional Republicans for opposing legislation that would lower student-loan borrowing costs. Obama signed an executive order allowing more people to limit repayments of federal student loans to 10 percent of their monthly incomes. The administration will also try to lower student costs by renegotiating government contracts with companies like Sallie Mae that service student

The road to ‘Jen.’ From an early age, Jennifer Lydon knew she was a woman, though she was born male. There were dark days and bouts of feeling helpless. But with support from family, friends and co-workers, the Metro ad salesperson was able to open up about her transformation — and how she’s finally comfortable in the body she was born to be in. Brian Lydon’s leg bounced underneath his desk. He pulled on his pin-striped suit jacket and ran his fingers through his hair. “I want to thank everyone in advance for hanging out after the meeting to hear what I have to say,” he began. His hands started to shake. “I would like to share something of a personal nature with all of you. In fact, I now feel as though I need to.” On March 19, the 48-yearold Metro ad salesman would reveal his true self to colleagues at Metro Boston’s sister paper in Philadelphia at the end of a monthly staff meeting. In the glass-enclosed conference room overlooking Philadelphia’s City Hall, Lydon’s co-workers gathered to acknowledge birthdays, milestones and Employees of the Month. In an unusual aside, Metro’s HR director talked about workplace diversity, then asked Lydon if he wanted to say something. Lydon pointed: “Can you close the door?” “Look, I’m a little nervous,” Lydon said, his leg pumping like a jackhammer, as he unwrinkled a piece of paper. “So

I’m just going to read this.” Heads swiveled: Was he quitting? Was it cancer? “Over the years some of you may have noticed how I always seem to shy away from social situations. I’ve been fighting a lifelong struggle — one that in the early 1970s was not even close to being understood.” Was he an alcoholic? Is this his 12th Step? “Well, approximately five years ago, after decades of guilt, suppression and substance abuse, I finally sought out the professional help I so desperately needed — and after being diagnosed with gender dysphoria, I finally accepted the fact that I am what is more commonly referred to as transgender.” There it was: The professional called Brian Lydon was only a mask. Outside of work, he was Jennifer. Brian was just a suit, but Jennifer was real. “My family accepts me,” Lydon went on to say. “My exwife is now my best friend, and I am currently in a long-term relationship. For the first time in my life, I can pretty much say that I am happy. We spend one-third of our lives at work. And personally, I can no longer play [a role]. I’m proud of who I am.” Lydon peered around the room. Some dabbed at their eyes, some brought a hand to Lydon’s shoulder. Applause broke the moment of silence. Metro Director of Finances Peter Handy stood: “That was extremely brave. That took a lot of intestinal fortitude to do. I could say another word, but I won’t.”

The last step of Lydon’s transformation was complete. Throughout her entire life, from now on, she would be known as Jennifer Lydon. “You look like a huge weight has been lifted off of your shoulders,” Handy added. Lydon threw up her hands: “Yeah, well, life’s too short to not be happy.”

Finally ‘me’ The mailman slipped the Sept. 6, 1976, issue of Sports Illustrated through the mail slot. When 11-year-old Brian Lydon opened it to the full spread on Renee Richards, the transgender female tennis player who wanted to compete at Wimbledon, his eyes widened. “I had never seen anything like this,” Lydon said, looking back. When his siblings were in bed, Lydon read the magazine under a lamp. Back then, Lydon knew he was a Renee Richards.

“I remember seeing that and was like, ‘Oh, Oh, m my God. You can actually ctua change,’” Lydon n said. “And I wanted it. t. I wanted it.” Seeing Richards made Lydon aware that at he wasn’t the only nly one sneaking around, round, trying on his sister’s ter’s clothes. The first life Lydon put down her soda, cros crossed her legs and cracked her wris wrist. She knew she was female from a very young age, but tried to “b “beat it,” as she puts it. Lydon’s brother Michael Tittinger remembers taking a break from watching a Raiders game years ago to check messages on his phone. He came across an email from his brother. It started: “Michael, there is something I’ve been waiting to tell you.” Scanning through the email, he stopped on the word “transgender.” Ignoring questions from his wife, he got up from the couch, went to the back bedroom and read the rest of the message. He was the first in the family to know. Tittinger said he and Lydon are now closer than ever. “I may have lost my brother and gained a sister, but I still have a best friend.” The rest of Lydon’s Irish Catholic family was also

transgender men and women, Lydon recalled. So Lydon came back to Philly. “I’m glad, because if I would have come out then, I can almost be sure I’d be dead,” Lydon said. She brought her voice down to a whisper: “I hated what I was. And when you hate what you are, that’s not a good thing.” And then, Lydon met Debbie. “Debbie kind of saved my life.” The couple got together in their early 20s. Debbie already had two children — Amy and CJ —

from a previous relationship. Before they wed, Lydon told Debbie about her past wearing women’s clothes, and she slowly revealed more as their relationship grew. “I loved Debbie. She was my soul mate,” Lydon said. “I still love her.” The couple had two girls together — Vicky and Debbie — and settled in Montgomery County. A tattoo of a shamrock on Lydon’s right arm has two ribbons around it: “Debra and Brian.”

Lydon’s four kids, who are all adults now, gathered in the living room of the oldest daughter’s house in Northeast Philadelphia along with Lydon’s ex-wife and boyfriend, Tony. Tony and Lydon first went out on a date in September 2011. They’d met a month earlier at a karaoke night. Tony remembers Jennifer singing “Tiny Dancer.” This isn’t the first time he’s met Debbie; in fact, she joins the couple out together often. “We’re really close,” Debbie said of Lydon now. “We’ve changed a lot as far as, obviously, a relationship, but I love her. And I’ll tell you, I did not like Jen. I couldn’t’ stand her. I went to the therapist and said, ‘She’s a bitch. Jen killed my husband.’ But now it’s like, ‘Jen’s awesome.’” Lydon interrupts: “It was hard. But once I accepted who I was, it was like I couldn’t stop.” Their daughter, young

accepting of the news. They all met at the family home one day, and Lydon couldn’t hide the fact that something was up. Lydon’s mother broke the silence to ask what was happening. That’s when Lydon broke down. “I’m transgender, Mom,” Lydon told her. “I’ve been my whole life.” Lydon’s parents didn’t know what that meant. She recalls her mother asking if it was the same as being gay. Realizing how alone Lydon must have felt, her mother said, “I’m so sorry you had to go through this.” Lydon remembers feeling at that moment that her parents wanted to help her move forward. “I knew they would still love me,” she said. “But never in my dreams did I think it would have went so well.”

Debbie, says it’s funny: “People have mistaken Jen for my mother.” When Lydon came out, she was worried that her family would alienate her. “I thought I would never have a loving relationship with [my kids].” But she couldn’t have been more wrong. “I think it made us stronger, because now you can be yourself. Because you used to go in your room a lot, and now that you feel comfortable, it brought us together,” the younger Debbie said. “I would come home, drink beer, take a few Valium and try to numb everything,” Lydon said. “If I have one regret, it’s maybe that I would have done this earlier. But if I had done it earlier, I don’t think everything would have played out so well. And I wouldn’t have this beautiful family.”

Meeting Jen Lydon Jennifer Lydon sat at the bar and nursed a diet soda on a Friday afternoon in April, about a month after she came out to her Metro Philadelphia co-workers. She had taken several weeks of sabbatical to get things in order and to meet with clients who may be confused about the salesperson now in front of them. She pulled on her leather jacket and ran her hands through her long, wavy blonde hair. A bright smile stretched from ear to ear. “I’m crazy happy, happier than I’ve been,” she said. police station. She’s officially “Jen.” “I’m excited to get back to work,” she said. She wore her makeup lightly — eye shadow and eyeliner. A cross hung from her necklace, and a yin/yang bracelet dangled off her wrist. “I’m actually very lucky that Metro’s giving me a chance,” she said, pulling on her earlobe, “because most people that try coming out at my age, it doesn’t work out. Very few of us are employed. It’s getting better.” She acknowledges there will be challenges along the way, but is confident that it will all work out. “Life always throws trouble at you, but every problem I’ve ever had just goes back to this. I always put the two together, and it just put so much stress on my life,” she said. If you wanted to write a breezy, straightforward study of an actor, Vanessa Redgrave would probably be one of your poorest choices. Of the world’s master thespians, she’s likely the most problematic; although she has plenty of theatrical bona fides, her screen career — although brilliant — is patchy. And then there’s her political activism, which includes working with the controversial Workers Revolutionary Party and enrag-

ing many with her defense of Palestine, among others. s. But writer and critic Dan Callahan stormed ahead anyway. “Vanessa: The Life of Vanessa Redgrave” is a critical study of the actress’ work that isn’t afraid to delve into her controversies or to set certain misconceptions straight. You call her the greatest actress who ever lived, but you’re very critical of her work and call some performances misjudged. Her method is very erratic. She can only get as high up as she has because she doesn’t follow a straight line. She has all these bad ideas that people have to talk her out of. The trick is to have her go with the brilliant one no one else on Earth would have thought of. ... She’s never mediocre; I never feel with her that she isn’t interested.

Political animal You aren’t afraid to go into her political life, and you try to show that her acting and humanitarian work come from the same place: a compassion for people. That’s the great irony: The thing that makes her scale the heights of acting is what gets her into trouble in her political life. You can’t have one without the other with her. Part of the reason I wanted to write this book was that her own autobiography from 20 years ago is very confusing and obscure about [her poli-

tics]. And she writes mainly about that and not her work. I wanted to write about her work, but I wanted to clarify this Workers Revolutionary Party period, too.

You also make her political work, at least to a point, fairly honorable. Many actors talk about helping people, but she really goes out and does it. She’s obsessed with helping people. If there’s something bad going on in the world, she’s going to raise money for it; she’s going to do something about it. On the one hand, that’s very admirable. But on the other hand, it’s too much, and it has placed great burdens on the people in her life and the people she has worked with. She’s aware of that, but she can’t help it.

Instructions: Blend the strawberries, ¼ to ½ cup coconut water, and 1½ to 2 teaspoons agave nectar or honey. Use as little Ingredients

Mango Lassicles by Nicholas Day Ingredients: • 1 ½ cups fresh mango pulp • 1 cup Greek yogurt • 1 tablespoon honey • Pinch of salt • Pinch of ground cardamom Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend very well. Freeze in the ice-pop containers of your choice. Allow four hours or so for freezing. Rinse your blender, then blend blackberries, blueberries, coconut water and agave nectar or honey. Freeze. Next, blend crushed ice, lime juice, lemon zest, coconut water and agave nectar or honey. Spoon the mixtures — they should be thick —into popsicle molds, layering them. Place popsicle stick in and freeze for four hours.

Groupings for the 2014 World Cup were released last December. Therefore, it’s been six whole months that the U.S. has known that even making the Round of 16 in the world’s greatest soccer tournament will be an arduous task. Group G is one of two perceived “Groups of Death,” along with Group B — which features Spain, the Netherlands, Chile and Australia.

Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s decision to leave Landon Donovan off the U.S. men’s team immediately opened him up to scrutiny. Many American fans are already down on his scheming and he didn’t win anyone over when he bluntly said the U.S. “can’t win” in Brazil. Unfortunately for American fans, he’s probably right — but that doesn’t mean the U.S. can’t pull off an upset or two. The Americans have depth in the middle of the field, with Michael Bradley leading the way. Jermaine Jones should also see plenty of action under Klinsmann’s watch.

Ghana will likely be the United States’ “easiest” matchup in Group G play, but you don’t have to explain to the Americans just how formidable an opponent Ghana is.
