Boston’s street food is just as safe, if not safer, than food sold by brick-and-mortar restaurants, according to a study released Tuesday. The Institute for Justice collected data from the Boston’s Inspectional Services Department, which inspects all food establishments for potential violations. The study showed that between 2011 and July 2013, per inspection, food trucks averaged less than three violations; food carts averaged one violation; and brick-and-mortar restaurants averaged more than four violations. Boston’s food trucks and carts are subject to the same health codes and inspection regime as restaurants. “I’m not surprised at the study results,” said Boston food truck blogger Steven Leibowitz, who runs HubFood Trucks.com. “Ever since the [Boston Globe] ran an article last August questioning food truck sanitation, I’ve regularly reviewed the city’s inspection records. You’ll always find restaurants that have had permit suspensions, even high-end ones. I don’t think there has been any food truck suspension in over a year,” Leibowitz said. Food truck cleanliness came into question last July after nearly 30 people who ate at

Survey: Hub daters ‘go Dutch’ more often Dating. Gender roles are shifting, even on a dinner date. A new survey ranks Boston as second for couples that “go Dutch,” or split the check on a date, despite the fact that 2 in 3 women believe men should still pick up the tab. The poll, conducted by dating site WhatsYourPrice.com, said 86 percent of Boston couples settle on splitting the tab. “This survey doesn’t surprise me,” said Susan Baxter, founder of Hire a Boston WingWoman, a professional “ice-breaker” service. Baxter said she instructs her male clients to always pick up the tab on the first date, even if the woman offers. “A woman may accept paying half, but she won’t like it. It’s a turnoff, to be honest,” Baxter said. “In a city where educa-

However, I am not a fan.” The American Sociological Association found that while 57 percent of women offer to split the bill, 39 percent hope men will reject the offer. Detroit ranked highest, with 88 percent going halfsies. Louisville followed Boston with 85 percent, followed by Indianapolis with 81 percent. Other cities likely to go Dutch include Miami, Palo Alto, Phoenix, Austin, New Haven and Toledo, according to the survey. “If you want to impress a woman, then you have to pay,” said Brandon Wade, founder of WhatsYourPrice.com. “Gender equality should not equate to the death of chivalry.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Health emergency. State needs to expand opioid services, report reveals Saying there is a need for expanded drug addiction recovery services across the state, a task force released a report analyzing ways to address the “epidemic of opiate abuse” in Massachusetts. The Opioid Task Force and state Department of Public Health released their findings and recommendations on Tuesday. Among the findings included in the report was the need for expanded recovery services. Those in recovery highlighted the importance of the state’s seven Recovery Support Centers, which operate 12 hours a day. The report recommended expanding the hours and number of those centers. Additionally, the report said there is a need for increased education for youth and families about the dangers of drug use, as well as a need for increased education for prescribers to ensure effective pain management. Gov. Deval Patrick’s office said on Tuesday that he will meet with New England governors next week at Brandeis University to discuss a regional response to the issue. “These actions will help enhance our network of treatment and recovery services to help communi-

Just because you have a hiccup doesn’t mean you have to hold your breath.” And even with this hiccup, there’s still apparently reason to be optimistic. “Lindsay’s in clubs, but she’s not drinking. Her friends have never seen her doing so well,” the source says. “Lindsay goes to the gym every single day. She’s really trying to stay sober. And she’s taking it one day at a time.”

THE WORD Ned Ehrbar takes on the world of gossip. NED EHRBAR

@Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

It turns out Jennifer Lopez will be helping kick off the World Cup after all, despite her reps telling CNN over the weekend that she wouldn’t perform as planned at the Opening Ceremony in Brazil. “The backlash was so significant that she decided she needed to attend,” a source tells the National Enquirer. So what caused her to pull out in the first place? Apparently it was all about the money. “]Lopez] was in a back-and-forth with the World Cup about expenses,” the source says. “She had wanted them to cover everything for her, from private transportation to her hotel and the costs associated for her entire entourage.” But apparently there are other things more important than money (when you’re rich, anyway): “It’s the world stage. It would have been foolish for her not to exploit the World Cup for the publicity alone.”

FILM

BILL BLUMENREICH PRESENTS

He is such a big ‘mensch’ Interview. Shep Gordon may be an obscure figure, but a new documentary shows he knows everyone. The subject of “Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon” isn’t a household name; he doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page. But as the documentary, directed by longtime friend Mike Myers, shows, he’s one of the Zeligs of the entertainment business. He knows everybody and everybody knows him. He was instrumental in starting the careers of Alice Cooper, Teddy Pendergrass, even Anne Murray, as well as producing movies, turning chefs into celebrities and much more.

Did Myers have to do much coaxing to get you to participate in this? I said no for years and years and years. It was only when I was in the hospital that I said yes. I was probably heavily medicated. What things would you change about the film? Did he get things wrong? I felt that I was given too much credit in the early days of Alice [Cooper], which is why I’ve been crediting Joe Greenberg, who was my partner. I come across like I did everything. I truly had people who helped me everywhere, and he was the most significant. We managed Alice together, we met Janis [Joplin] together, we met Jimi together. But Mike only had 90 minutes and it’s his story, much more than it’s my story. It’s his story of my life — the parts he knows.

E3 UNVEILED THE GAMES YOU’LL BE PLAYING Every year a bunch of drunken digital elves turn Los Angeles into a gamer’s paradise, where the games and consoles of the future are unveiled, usually by dorky dudes wearing suits. Here’s what went down!

Sony The PlayStation 4 has shipped gobs of units, taking an early lead in what is referred to by industry insiders as the “console wars.” They could have rested on their laurels, but Sony used E3 to go heavy on even more games, like the brutal “Bloodborne,” which is set in a bizarro London, and the absolutely stunning “No Man’s Sky,” which allows you to explore space — forever. They also announced the new sci-fi franchise starter “Destiny.” Also, there’s going to be

Xbox One isn’t the runaway success of its predecessor and the brand hasn’t exactly stayed on message. They delivered with scores of game announcements, from a new “Crackdown” (yes!) to a “Halo” HD collection, not to mention new installments in the “Tomb Raider” franchise. The only downside? Most of these games

were teased with cinematic trailers. Little-to-no gameplay was actually shown.

Nintendo Nintendo’s presence at E3 offered some surprises, sure, but for my money the star of the show was the forthcoming

duo of “Super Smash Bros.” games launching for Wii U and 3DS. If the recent success of “Mario Kart 8” is any indication, games that allow friends to crowd around the couch and beat the crap out of one another rule the world. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

Siri is cool and all, but no matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to form an emotional connection with the dang thing. You can ask about the weather, emotional states and even God and, still, nothing. Thank goodness there is a robot coming to market that is all about getting friendly with humans.

Japanese tech firm SoftBank has just unveiled Pepper, a friendly robot with a heart of, um, gold. It is powered by something they are calling an “emotional engine.” In layman’s terms that just means that dear old Pepper understands emotional states and can respond accordingly.

If you are in the market for a helpful and kind robot to hang out with, you’ll be able to purchase Pepper in February for around $1,900. Unfortunately, due to the bot’s lack of a digestive system, it cannot share those last-resort pints of Ben & Jerry’s with you. Maybe in the next iteration. LAWRENCE BONK

WELLBEING

IS IT JUST SUMMER OR SOMETHING MORE? I sometimes arrive at work drenched in perspiration. How do I know if I sweat too much?

Perspiration, or sweat, is the body’s way of cooling itself by evaporation of a slightly salty, water-based fluid secreted from glands in the skin. The amount you perspire depends on how many sweat glands you have; women have more than men, but men’s sweat glands are more active. Sweat glands are located in the palms of the hands and feet, as well as in higher concentrations in the armpits and groin. Sweating is usually a response to higher ambient temperatures. When it is

hot outside, you sweat more! Increased humidity also makes it feel as if you are sweating more; when there is more moisture in the air, there is less evaporation from the skin. Sweating is controlled by the autonomic nervous system as an involuntary response to the environment or other factors, such as diet (caffeine, spicy foods, alcohol), anxiety and stress, pain, low blood sugar, hormonal fluctuations and fever from an infection. Emotional stress often causes sweating that is isolated to the palms, feet, armpits and groin, whereas sweating for cooling purposes occurs all over the body.

The fluid secreted by sweat glands is largely water with a low concentration of dissolved electrolytes, minerals and fatty acids. On a particularly hot day or in response to vigorous exercise, the body can lose up to 2 liters of fluid per hour, so it is essential to drink water or an electrolyte-rich sports drink to avoid dehydration. Excessive sweating, known as hyperhidrosis, might be caused by a number of medical conditions, including nervous system disorders, infections, hormonal imbalances, medication side effects and anxiety. Though there’s no baseline for how much sweat is too much, there could be a concern if

Too much porn might aect your brain Location of study: Germany Study subjects: 64 men Results: Watching excessive amounts of pornography may be linked to brain changes in men. In a recent study, men who said they watched signiďŹ cant amounts of porn were found to have decreased brain matter and less brain activity. Researchers used brain scans to examine overall brain structures. They evaluated brain activity by looking at the way the men’s brains responded to sexually exciting images. Toronto has continued to roll, surprising many in the baseball world, as they’ve won seven of their last 10. As a team, they lead the league in home runs.

Seattle is one of the hottest teams in baseball at the moment, winners of eight of its last 10. Robinson Cano has settled in nicely as he is now hitting .330 with 77 hits.

Things are getting tight in the NL East and the Marlins are a major reason why, winning of five of their last seven games. Giancarlo Stanton has belted 17 homers so far this season.

Catcher Jonathan Lucroy (.335) and outfielder Carlos Gomez (.307) have paced the offense as they are third and seventh in batting average in the NL, respectively.

The defending NL champs are playing half-decent ball, but still remain five games behind the Brewers. Other than Matt Adams, the Cards don’t have many standouts at the dish.

Michael Brantley is having a solid season thus far, posting a line of .307/.373/.498 with 10 homers and 43 RBIs. Cleveland will be in Boston this weekend.

LA doesn’t have many individuals standing out, though Albert Pujols seems to have regained his form with 15 homers this season. They’ll try to keep pace with Oakland going forward.

The wheels have started to fall off for the Tigers as the rest of the AL Central has closed the gap. The positive? Victor Martinez is having a monster year at the plate.

The Nats have risen to the occasion and are in a first-place tie in the NL East. Starter Tanner Roark has been a pleasant surprise, having posted a 2.91 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP.

Josh Donaldson has belted 17 homers, the fourth-most in the AL, and has knocked in 50 runs, the fifth most in the AL. Scott Kazmir’s 2.20 ERA is good for third in the AL.

Things are not going so well for the Dodgers as the overall landscape and chemistry of the team has been put into question lately. LA is sitting just three games over .500.

The Braves will be heavily reliant on their starting pitching, particularly, Julio Teheran, who sports a 1.89 ERA. The NL East is going to be wildly competitive down the stretch.

Baltimore will be forced to win without Manny Machado for five games as the O’s third baseman was suspended by MLB for throwing his bat at A’s reliever Fernando Abad.

Rough road trip mercifully comes to an end for Sox in Baltimore The Red Sox and Orioles will wrap up their threegame series in Baltimore on Wednesday (7 p.m., NESN) as Boston sends Rubby De La Rosa (1-1, 2.84 ERA) to the mound to take on Wei-Yin Chen (6-2, 4.13 ERA). The Red Sox (28-35) were 10 games behind first-place Toronto in the AL East as of Tuesday while Baltimore (32-30) trailed the Blue Jays by 5 1/2 games. Report: Iginla, Bruins have mutual interest Bruins forward Jarome Iginla still has plenty of hockey left in him at 36 years of age, and on the surface, he hopes that the time he has left in the NHL will be in Boston. A league source told ESPN that the Bruins and Iginla are having “ongoing talks” about a new contract as the future Hall of Famer would become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Iginla had solid production in his first season with the B’s, netting 30 goals to go along with 31 assists. He had his moments in the B’s two 2014 playoff rounds as well, scoring five goals and registering a pair of assists. The B’s were bounced from the postseason by the Canadiens in Game 7 of a semifinal series. Iginla inked a one-year, $6 million deal with the B’s last summer after being traded from Calgary to Pittsburgh earlier in 2013.
