Using 3-D printing to help clean NYC streets Innovative. Urban Hubs are trying to change the way that the world recycles. If you’ve taken the L train to Brooklyn recently, you may have spotted clusters of bright, honeycomblike containers attached to signposts. Each unit is sized to hold an empty can or bottle. These mini recycling bins, called Urban Hubs, are part of a Bushwick-based project created by the 3-D printing startup TCR3D that is taking hold of cities around the globe. Urban Hubs were not just designed for ecological or environmental purposes. The contraption also serves to help “canners” collect discarded bottles and cans, which they then redeem for cash in order to make a living. “This happens every day,” Daniel Figur, TCR3D co-founder and creative director, said, gesturing to an overflowing garbage can on the sidewalk of Jefferson Street. It allow canners easier access to the bottles, while preventing trash from littering the city’s streets. The creators of Urban Hubs partnered with “Sure We Can,” a co-op for canners to create a product suited to the canning community’s needs. Urban Hubs is sponsored by the 3-D printing company 3DSystems,

City settles OWS protestors suit City attorneys agreed to pay up to $583,000 in damages to settle a lawsuit alleging NYPD officers wrongfully arrested protestors at a 2012 Occupy Wall Street rally. whose printers they use to generate the hubs. “3-D printing helps raise awareness because it’s so novel and fresh and cool, so when people see something related to 3-D printing they want to participate in what’s happening, and in this case it’s recycling,” Nate Kolbeck, co-founder and CEO of TCR3D, said. The founders stress Urban Hubs are an open source idea — their blueprint is available for free online, and they encourage others to make their own Urban Hubs. Kolbeck and Figur are enthusiastic about the rise of 3-D printing, and predict that Urban Hubs will pick up momentum as 3-D printing becomes more widespread. Since the product’s release, one user has posted a photo online of himself using Urban Hubs as cup holders for his car. The team is also looking forward to seeing what the kids at P.S. 123 in Brooklyn make of Urban Hubs, with whom they are partnering to design a curriculum with their invention. At the end of the day, Figur and Kolbeck hope their creation will outlast its original purpose as a recycling bin. “I hope there is no need for recycle bins in the future because people start using reusable bottles,” Kolbeck said. “That would be awesome if there was no need for this.” LIBBY DVIR @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Frick proposes expansion, renovation The Frick Collection’s second floor may soon open to the public for the first time. A renovation and expansion proposal announced Tuesday includes construction of a new six-story wing on the museum’s East 70th Street side that would increase exhibition space,

initiative, developed by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, is “a legally appropriate response to the agency’s statutory obligation to produce a 21st century taxicab consistent with the broad interests … that the agency is charged with protecting,” Justice David Saxe wrote for a 3-1 majority for the court. In 2011, Nissan won a
contract worth $1 billion to provide its Nissan NV200 cabs, only to have a state Supreme Court justice rule last October that the TLC overstepped its authority. The plan was challenged by Evgeny Freidman, city fleet operator, and the Greater New York Taxi Association, which claimed the commission could not force taxi operators to buy specific vehicles. Report: NYC weed arrest patterns are unchanged Buzzkill. Findings are “more of the same,” according to the Marijuana Arrest Research Project. Marijuana arrest patterns during the first months of the de Blasio administration are “indistinguishable” from his predecessor, according to a recent report. An average of 80 people were arrested daily during the first four months of 2014 for possessing small amounts of marijuana, a report by the Marijuana Arrest Research Project found. An average of 78 such arrests were made in all of 2013. As a candidate, Mayor Bill de Blasio pledged to work with the NYPD to reduce low-level marijuana arrests. “We’re deeply disappointed that a promise

Sweeping ribbon of white lights Photographer Martin Kimbell shows he is a real bright spark with these spectacular light drawings, which use the night sky as his canvas. The 25-year-old used a special technique to create the intricate spirals, which look like they were created on the 1960s toy Spirograph. Lohan living it up in London (soberly)
Lindsay Lohan may be making a scene in London partying late every night, but she’s still in great shape sobriety-wise, a source close to the troubled actress insists — despite the fact that Lohan hasn’t been entirely sober lately. “Lindsay was off the wagon. Everyone has their stumbles, everyone will go out to drink,” the source explains. “She fell off the horse, but she picked herself

Just because you have a hiccup doesn’t mean you have to hold your breath.” And even with this hiccup, there’s still reason to be optimistic. “Lindsay’s in clubs, but she’s not drinking. Her friends have never seen her doing so well,” the source says. “Lindsay goes to the gym every single day. She’s really trying to stay sober. And she’s taking it one day at a time.”
What happened to our beloved Hugh Jackman’s hair? Just this weekend he was looking mighty fine in all of his hirsute glory while hosting the Tony Awards. And now this photo appears on Instagram? Reportedly, Jackman did not do this as a result of a fit of mania ala Britney Spears. And although he looks a little like one of those toys where you magnetically move hair around the face of a bald man, the new look is for the role of Blackbeard he’s going to play in an upcoming movie called “Pan.”

J.Lo will do the World Cup after all
It turns out Jennifer Lopez will be helping kick off the World Cup after all, despite her reps telling CNN over the weekend that she wouldn’t perform as planned during the Opening Ceremony in Brazil. “The backlash was so significant that she decided she needed to attend,” a source tells the National Enquirer. So what caused her to pull out in the first place? It was all about the money. “]Lopez] was in a back-and-forth with the World Cup about expenses,” the source says. “She had wanted them to cover everything for her, from private transportation to her hotel and the

‘Life sucks sometimes’ Interview. Laura Dern talks about the joys of being in the sometimes dark “The Fault in Our Stars.

Laura Dern is used to taking on serious roles, but morphing into a character whose daughter is dying of cancer is emotional on a whole new level. But when “The Fault In Our Stars director Josh Boone offered the part of Franny to Dern — a role she didn’t even audition for — she jumped at the chance. “I read John Green’s book [on which the movie is based] and just fell in love with it and what this movie could mean for all people, philosophically, who are fearless enough to love even though a love may end, she explains. “I’m really happy to be a
part of it. “The Fault In Our Stars is about a teen with terminal cancer named Hazel (Shailene Woodley) who falls in love with Gus (Ansel Elgort), who is in her cancer support group. Their love is as sweet as teenage love can be, except for the fact that it is destined to be unfairly short-lived. For Dern, it was author John Green who helped her carry the heavy weight of her role as Hazel’s mom. “He was there to hug us and thank us each day,
which I can’t imagine another author doing. His love of us made us fiercely protective of him and the book and it was an amazing, joyful experience. We would have dinners together as a cast every single night and laugh so much. That really carried me through, she says. She also had long talks with Green about her character and the inspiration behind her. “He’s definitely known parents going through something similar and there are spe-
What it taught her
The upside Though ďŹ lming ended last year, Dern says her life is forever changed by playing Franny. “It absolutely was such an incredible gift in my life to be grateful for these small blessings each day
and really try to remain in the moment and not be overwhelmed by the fear and pain that one will go through in life, for whatever one’s life traumas are, she says. “Life sucks sometimes and it’s inescapable. cific parents that I think meant the world to him. He would tell me about how he’s seen how extraordinarily tireless a mother can be while she is trying to normalize her daughter’s diagnosis so she can have a regular teenage day. ... It’s just unimaginable, and yet there are so many people going through it. The mother-daughter relationship in the movie is its own love story, as strong as the romantic one between the two cancer struck teens. Naturally, a strong bond carried over in real life between Dern and Woodley. They both have similar outlooks on life, a bit hippyish in a way, and while filming they spent their off-time cooking healthy meals and going to yoga classes together. “We’re best friends now, Dern says. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

ART & GOING OUT 16
Art with ‘Subtlety’ Arts. Check out the last installation that will take place at the Domino Sugar Factory. Kara Walker is best known for her black stencils of antebellum scenes that critique Civil War-era ethics. But she just created her first large-scale project in Williamsburg’s 90,000-square-foot Domino Sugar Factory. Ripe with gallows humor, “A Subtlety: or the Marvelous Sugar Baby” tackles the powerful topic of race politics. The installation is an homage to the If you go

unpaid and overworked laborers who refined sugar in the factory from its conception in 1856 to its closure in 2004. At times taboo and sexually charged, this provocative installation investigates the history of the Domino Sugar Factory through age-old racial tropes. The installation is a 35-foot-tall, 75-foot-long sphinx surrounded by child attendants — and it’s all created from sugar and molasses. A combination of racist stereotypes of black women, the head is a kerchiefwearing “Mammy,” whose jolly persona lived to please the domestic needs of wealthy white families. Her body is the erogenous
“Jezebel” with her prominent breasts, buttocks and sexuality on display. With sullen faces, the molassescovered attendants recall the historical socioeconomic gap between white and black culture. To give scale to the gargantuan installation, the children are the height of an average adult. This exhibit is the last before the factory’s demolition. In March 2014, the City Planning Commission approved a $1.5 billion redevelopment to connect the neighborhood to the waterfront and create a modern Brooklyn skyline. Edgar Bronfman’s 960 Fifth Ave. penthouse is not only staying in the billionaire’s club, but has also broken a record for the most expensive co-op ever sold in New York City. The home, which was originally listed for $65 million and entered contract for $70 million, sold to Egyptian billionaire Nassef Sawiris for that exact contract price, according to records filed today. The deal officially tops music mogul David Geffen’s 785 Fifth Ave. penthouse buy in 2012 for $54 million. The news was first reported by the New York Daily News. NYU growth blocked by condo board

Building dispute. At issue is the university’s right to punch a hole in a wall. New York University’s plans to connect its Upper East Side fine arts institute with a donated space in a neighboring building appear to have been quashed by that building’s condo board, which claims the university’s plans require the board’s consent. The institute operates from a 40,000-square-foot space at 1 E. 78th St. NYU hoped to gain more room by connecting the building to a neighboring six-story, 13-unit building at 3 E. 78th St. via a 10-foot-long breezeway. Billionaire Sheldon Solow donated the ground floor commercial condominium in the building to NYU in the late 1990s. Building the breezeway would require NYU to punch a hole in the French Gothic property, designed in 1899 by renowned American architect C.P.H. Gilbert. But Adam Leitman Bailey, the lawyer for the condo board at 3 E. 78th, wrote to the LPC last month, stating that the wall in question is owned by the condo board, and represents a structural change to the building. That would require approval by the condo board president, per the building’s bylaws. NYU maintains the bylaws allow the owner of the commercial ground floor condominium to make alterations without the board’s consent, according to The New York Times. Bailey claims NYU falsely represented itself in the application as owners of 3 E. 78th St. to secure approval of the work. “In light of NYU’s knowing and deceptive submission of this unauthorized application, the Board respectfully requests that the application be rejected in all respects, he wrote to the LPC. As part of the landmarks process, university

representatives initially appeared before the area’s Community Board 8 in May to present the plans. The community board voted 41-1 against NYU’s proposal. “The presentation information did not fully illustrate the proposed changes,â€? the board stated in a letter to the LPC dated May 22. The letter notes “the materials are not appropriate to the existing buildingsâ€? and the construction would disturb “the original fabricâ€? of the two buildings. The Times stated that NYU temporarily suspended its application after it was rejected by the board. But it was the Landmarks commission that withdrew the application, until NYU and the condo board agree about the right person to sign the application, according to correspondence between the LPC and the condo board. Impact on residents? New York University wants to use the space at 3 E. 78th St. to build additional facilities. NYU spokeswoman Shonna Keogan told us that the university shared these plans with building residents over a year ago. “The addition of the breezeway was included in large part to reduce the traďŹƒc in the main entrance in order to minimize impact to the condo residents,â€? she said.

Every year a bunch of drunken digital elves turn Los Angeles into a gamer’s paradise, where the games and consoles of the future are unveiled, usually by dorky dudes wearing suits. Here’s what went down!
Sony The PlayStation 4 has shipped gobs of units, taking an early lead in what is referred to by industry insiders as the “console wars. They could have rested on their laurels, but Sony used E3 to go heavy on even more games, like the brutal “Bloodborne, which is set in a bizarro London, and the absolutely stunning “No Man’s Sky, which allows you to explore space — forever. They also announced the new sci-fi franchise starter “Destiny. Also, there’s going to be a white PS4.
Microsoft Microsoft came into this E3 with something to prove. Xbox One isn’t the runaway success of its predecessor and the brand
hasn’t exactly stayed on message. They delivered with scores of game announcements, from a new “Crackdown (yes!) to a “Halo HD collection, not to mention new installments in the “Tomb Raider franchise. The only downside? Most of these games were teased with cinematic trailers. Little-to-no gameplay was actually shown.
Nintendo Nintendo’s presence at E3 offered some surprises, sure, but for my money the star of the show was the forthcoming duo of “Super Smash Bros. games launching for Wii U and 3DS. If the recent success of “Mario Kart 8 is any indication, games that allow friends to crowd around the couch and beat the crap out of one another rule the world. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

Porn might aect your brain
Researchers regrow teeth Location of study: U.S. Study subjects: Rodents Results: A novel procedure has uncovered a potential new way to treat damaged teeth – by growing new ones. Researchers are using low-level lasers to stimulate stem cells that regenerate dentin, which serves as the foundation of teeth. SigniďŹ cance: In general, the process of regenerating stem cells isn’t so simple. “I think the big novelty is connecting the dots here in our ability to use a noninvasive tool and perform clinical therapy driving stem cell dierentiation,â€? said lead author Praveen Arany.

Location of study: Germany Study subjects: 64 men Results: Watching excessive amounts of pornography may be linked to brain changes in men. In a recent study, men who said they watched signiďŹ cant amounts of porn were found to have decreased brain matter and less brain activity. SigniďŹ cance: Researchers say the ďŹ ndings might be taken as evidence that the neural response to sexual stimuli is blunted with more frequent exposure. But the study was unable to determine whether the pornography caused the observed neural eects, or if the speciďŹ c biology dictated the preference for pornography.

Many feel less stress at work than at home Location of study: U.S. Study subjects: Over 100 working Americans Results: Stressed out? Cutting back at work might not be the best remedy. New research suggests we might be more stressed at home than at the oďŹƒce. Cortisol, the “stress hormone,â€? was generally found to be higher while we’re home. SigniďŹ cance: Sarah Damaske of Penn State University says the ďŹ ndings held true across gender, marital status, occupation and education. Sometimes, sweating is due to more than just warmer weather. CREATAS
The Doctor Will See You Now
DR. MARK MELROSE URGENTCAREMANHATTAN.COM Mark Melrose, DO, is a board-certiďŹ ed emergency physician at Urgent Care Manhattan. E-mail him your questions at askdrmark@metro.us.
I sometimes arrive at work drenched in sweat. How do I know if I sweat too much?
Perspiration, or sweat, is the body’s way of cooling itself by evaporation of a slightly salty, water-based fluid secreted from glands in the skin. The amount you perspire depends on how many sweat glands you have; women have more than men, but men’s sweat glands are more active. Sweating is usually a response to higher ambient temperatures. When it is hot outside, you sweat more! Increased humidity also makes it feel as if you are sweating more; when there is more moisture in the air, there is less evaporation from the skin. Sweating is an involuntary response to the environment or other factors, such as diet (caffeine, spicy foods, alcohol), anxiety and stress, pain, low blood sugar, hormonal fluctuations and fever from an infection. Emotional stress often causes sweating that is isolated to the palms,
feet, armpits and groin, whereas sweating for cooling purposes occurs all over the body. The fluid secreted by sweat glands is largely water with a low concentration of electrolytes, minerals and fatty acids. On a particularly hot day or in response to vigorous exercise, the body can lose up to 2 liters of fluid per hour, so stay hydrated! Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) might be caused by a number of medical conditions, including nervous system disorders, infections, hormonal imbalances, medication side effects and anxiety. Though there’s no baseline for how much sweat is too much, there could be a concern if you’re sweating for no apparent reason. If you suspect that you sweat more than is appropriate due to weather or exercise or at inappropriate times, then a doctor can conduct a purposeful history and physical exam. Regrets no excuse Re: ‘Obama easing school debt law’ (Metro, June 10) I was taught by my family that one meets his or her obligations and you don’t sign anything unless you understand what you’re signing. I will and have assisted my children with their students loans and would never allow them to not meet their obligations. “I did not know how much it would be” is no excuse. CAMELIA

Fisher pushes aside inexperience issues NBA. The new Knicks head coach was introduced to the media Tuesday. The Knicks officially announced the hiring of Derek Fisher as the franchise’s 26th head coach on Tuesday. And perhaps no coach has had his credentials as scrutinized as the former NBA point guard. But the always affable Fisher, once the NBA players association president, quickly dispelled the notion he’s not up for the immediate career change. “There obviously will be a lot of talk about my inexperience as a head coach, and that is factually true, said the 39-year-old Fisher. “I have not been a head coach in the NBA, college or high school, but I am
